Wilma F. Gobeli
October 4, 2005
Wilma Gobeli, of Meservey, died on Sunday, October 2, 2005, at the
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday morning, October 5, 2005, at the Salem United
Methodist Church in Meservey, with the Rev. Rose
Calderon-Kahn presiding. Interment was in the Meservey
Cemetery.
Wilma Fern, was
born on June 11, 1925, on a farm in Hardin County, the
daughter of Howard and Nellie (Manning) Hurd. She
started school in Williams and in 1941 moved with her
family to a farm near Meservey. She graduated from the
Meservey High School in 1943. On August 18, 1944 she
married Dean Gobeli at the Methodist Parsonage in
Meservey.
Wilma was a member
of the Salem Unite Methodist Church, where she served on the board. She was a
member of the Meservey American Legion Auxiliary Post
171 where she served in local and county offices and
was a precinct election official the past few years.
After they quit
farming, Wilma and Dean hauled livestock for Bonner
Truck Line in many states and Canada for 25 years.
They also ran the Meservey grocery store for 13
months.
Wilma enjoyed
spending time with her family, attending the school
events of her grandkids and great grandkids, being in
her garden and taking trips to the casino.
Wilma was preceded
in death by her parents; husband in 1993; two sisters;
and one brother.
She is survived by
her children, Linda (Kenneth) Shaw of Meservey,
Michael (Pam) Gobeli of Meservey, Steven (Jan) Gobeli
of Hamilton, Ohio and Cynthia (Ron) Abel of Knoxville;
grandchildren, Michelle (Rob) Duff, Kendra (Scot)
Wilson, Chad (Ranae) Shaw, Cory, Cara and Crystal
Gifford, Lucas Gobeli and Jeremy Gobeli; great-grandchildren, Amber, Kyle and Hailey Duff, Sadie and
Seth Wilson, and Spencer, Conner and Jared Shaw;
sister, Lavonne Friar; and brother-in-law, Vern (Jan) Gobeli.

Paul E. Hickman
October 11, 2005
Paul E. Hickman, died on Friday, October 7, 2005, at the Belmond
Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday,
October 11, 2005, at the Luick Auditorium,
Belmond-Klemme High School, with Pastors Pat Kennedy
and David Wiersbe officiating. Interment was in the
Belmond Cemetery with military rites.
Don Dye gave
the eulogy. Judy Watne was the pianist. Special music
was provided by Paulette Andrews and Tim Smith. Casket bearers were Ray Johnson, Jim Meyer, Dave
Gildner, Dave Kuhlers, Paul Spade and Dr. Joe
Griffion. Honorary casket bearers were the Belmond
V.F.W. Ceremonial Unit
Paul was born on
May 21, 1925, the son of Robert and Reca Hickman. He
attended the Ashton Public Schools, graduating in
1943. Paul entered the U.S. Army in September 1943 and
served for 39 months, 22 of those in the South
Pacific. He was discharged in 1946 but was called back
into the army during the Korean War. Paul married A.
Marie Zevenbergen on August 24, 1949 at Ashton.
Paul graduated
from Morningside College in 1952, majoring in history, minoring in physical education, and earning a
secondary teaching certificate. He received a master's
degree in social science in 1965 at Northeast Missouri
State (Truman State). He taught junior high at Madrid
for one year and 32 years at Belmond. Then he was a
substitute teacher for 15 years.
Paul was a life
member of the National Education Association and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served on the honor
guard for over 25 years. He also served on the board
of the Belmond Retirement Apartments for over 25
years. He was a charter member of the Belmond Bible
Church and later joined the church affiliated with the
Evangelical Free Church. He served on the board and
was song leader for 40 years.
Paul was preceded
in death by his parents; sister, Helen Kruse; and
grandson, Dennis Andrews.
Survivors included
his wife; daughter, Paulette (John) Andrews and their
daughters, Wendy (Nik) Nielsen and Krisha (Joe)
Serrie; son, David (Joan) Hickman and their children,
Kristen and Matthew; son, Scott (Angie) Hickman and
their children, Jeffrey and Jessica; daughter, Roxanne
(Dennis) Schlader and their children, Cody and Ciarah;
and sisters, Lois (Richard) DeBoer and Joyce (Gerald)
Behrens.

Byron P. Koenen
October 11, 2005
Byron P. Koenen, 69, of Clear Lake, died on Sunday, October 9,
2005, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason
City.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 12,
2005, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with
Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Interment was in the
Meservey Cemetery.
Byron Peter, was
born on February 17, 1936 in Belmond, a son of Bernhard
and Hattie (Steenblock) Koenen. He attended Belmond
schools. On October 1, 1954 he married Vergene
Watermiller at First Reformed in Meservey. Together
they farmed in the Thornton area.
Byron was a farmer
through and through. He served on the Thornton Co-op
Board for 12 years, a few as president, and served
many years on the Franklin County ASCS Committee. As a
pilot, Byron flew over farms for the ASCS crews to
take aerial photographs of farms. He also enjoyed
fishing and motorcycling with his friends. A member of
the First Reformed Church in Meservey, Byron served
the church in the consistory, as a deacon and elder.
He also was a 4-H Leader in Franklin County.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, George
and Cora Watermiller; and brother-in-law, Franklin
Pitkin.
Survivors include
his wife; daughters, Valerie (Wayne) Koehler of
Meservey and Renae (Joseph) Jones of Bothell,
Washington; grandchildren, Shawn (Kelly) Koehler of
Enid, Oklahoma, Brandon (Peggy) Koehler of Mason City,
Matthew Koehler of Ames and Carly Jones of Bothell;
three great-grandchildren; one niece; one nephew;
sister, Marjorie (Ron) Jurgens of Belmond; and
sister-in-law, Elaine Pitkin of Clear Lake.

Kenneth E. Bailey
November 1, 2005
Kenneth Elmer Bailey, 86, of Rowan, died on Saturday, October 29, 2005, at
the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at
the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor Nancy Hofmeister officiating. Interment was in the Graceland
Cemetery, Rowan.
Wilma Aldrich was
the organist and Annie Avery the soloist. Ushers were
Larry Aldrich, Kevin Hadley and Marvin Smith. Casket bearers were grandsons, Chris Bailey, Andy
Bailey, Bob Bailey, Ben Bailey, Steven Bailey, Joe
Bailey, Alex Lehs, Josh Lehs, Johnathon Bailey, Justin
Bailey and Scott Bailey. Honorary casket bearers were
granddaughters, Shelly Heisman, Jennifer Duncan, Angie
Bailey, Susan Bailey, Wendy Edwards, Amy Dreger and
Sherri Bailey.
Kenneth, the son
of Elmer and Lucy Ryder Bailey, was born on July 2, 1919
near Rowan. He attended country school and then quit
to help his father on the farm.
He married Ardyce
Harris at the United Methodist Church in Clarion on
September 1, 1940. They made their home on the family
farm near Rowan. In December 1975 they moved into
town.
Kenneth was a jack
of all trades, farmer, carpenter and electrician. He
built kitchen cabinets and many homes, including his
own. He enjoyed bowling, woodworking and building
grandfather clocks.
Collecting antique
John Deere tractors and traveling were some of
Kenneth's pastimes. He enjoyed going south for the
winter, especially to Arizona.
He was a member of
both churches in Rowan. He was chairman of the finance
committee for the new church building and was
instrumental in this project. Kenneth was a member of
the Lion's Club for 43 years, serving as President and
Vice-President.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; brothers, Edwin, Lloyd and
Merle; and sister, Leona.
Kenneth is
survived by his wife; daughter, Cindy (Dean) Lehs of
Clear Lake; sons, Larry (Carol) of Belmond, Dennis
(Donna) of Rowan, Ronnie (Connie) of St. Joseph,
Missouri and Marv (Dee Dee) of Klemme; twenty-one
grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; brother, Elmer Jr. (Donna) of
Leavenworth, Kansas; sister-in-law, Dorothy Bailey of
Hampton; and brother-in-law, Robert Haupt of Belmond.

David E. Soma
November 16, 2005
David E. Soma, 68, of Britt, died on Saturday, October 29, 2005, at
the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were
held on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at the St.
Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with burial in the
Belmond Cemetery.
David Elmer, the
son of Elmer and Sylvia Chapman Soma, was born on
December 4, 1936, on the family farm near Belmond. He
attended country school in rural Belmond.
He married
Janice Nelsen of Clarion in 1957, and they divorced in
1987. He married June
Roberts in Britt in 1988.
Survivors include
his wife; son, Daniel (Colleen) Soma and their
children of Eagle Grove; daughter, Julia Anne (Thomas) Torpey of Colorado; his wife's children; and sisters,
Audrey (Richard) Elliott of San Diego, Phyllis
(Rollie) Jenison of Ames, Eloise (Robert) Davis of
Mason City, Sandra (Glendon) Losen of Mason City,
Kathryn (Ronald) Schroder of Florida and Cheryl Soma
of Eagle Grove.

Omer B. Kelley, Jr
November 1, 2005
Omer
B. Kelley, Jr., 84, long time resident of the Belmond
Community Apartments, died on Monday, October 31, 2005,
at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services
will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2005, at 11:00
a.m., at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Rev.
Michael Druhl officiating. Visitation will be held on
Wednesday from 4:30-7:00 p.m., at the Andrews Funeral
Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.
Full military honors will be provided by the Belmond
Honor Guard.
Omer Burnett
Kelley, Jr., was born on November 2, 1920 at Wellman, the
son of Omer B. and Josephine Belle (Fuller) Kelley. He
attended the Belmond Schools.
He served in the
United States Navy during World War II aboard three
destroyers, including the USS Lewis Hancock and USS
Upshur. Awards he received were one silver and one
bronze star Asiatic Pacific; two bronze stars
Philippine Liberation, Eur-African Ribbon and C.O.
Commendation.
Omer worked as a
laborer, as a mechanic at Ed Kennedy's Garage, and at
Central Soya and Acco Seed prior to retiring.
Family was the
number one joy in his life. His hobbies included
Sunday afternoon fishing excursions to Clear Lake,
hunting, gardening, making black powder guns, working
puzzles, and following his favorite sports teams. He
raised a large garden and was an excellent cook and
baker. He had a passion for Nascar and enjoyed muscle
cars and tinkering on cars. He held staunch Democratic
beliefs.
Omer was a life
time member of the VFW and the Disabled American
Veterans.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; sisters, Helen and Violet; and
brother, Lawrence.
Survivors include his
wife, Irene; son, Danny (Barb) Kelley of Somerset,
Florida and their son, Scott; son, Joe (Marcia) Kelley
of Norwalk and their children, John (Sherry) Kelley
and Lisa (Lance) Gibson; son, Tim (Kelle) Kelley of
Belmond and their children, Tony and his fiancée,
Lacey, Nicole and Cole; daughter, Kathy (Steve)
Gardner of Urbandale; daughter, Laurie (Dennis) Nelson
of Belmond and their children, Jennifer (Mark) Armour
and Josh Nelson; sister, Doris "Dee Dee" (Earl) Cronk;
and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Sarah, Maranda, Zach,
Lindsay, Cameron and Amara.
