Betty Smith

September 13, 2005
 
Betty Mae Vorhes-Smith, 69, of Hampton, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at the West Campus in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 10, at the Hampton UCCC. Burial was in the West Side Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Betty was born on March 3, 1936 in Marble Rock. She married Earl L. Smith in 1953.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and a sister.

Survivors include her husband; children, Shirley Smith of Hampton, Doyle Smith of Belmond, George Smith of Illinois and Brenda Smith-Jutting of Newton; sister, Donna Vorhes-Smith of Charles City; nine children; and nine great-grandchildren.

Harold D. Coombs

September 27, 2005
 
Harold Dean Coombs, 81, of Ames, died on Monday, September 19, 2005.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 22, 2005, at the Dows United Methodist Church.

Harold was born on September 8, 1924 in Dows, the son of Ralph and Erdene Unger Coombs. He married Beverly Shillington in 1945. They farmed north of Dows until retirement in 1996. They moved to Ames in 2001.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife; son, John (Beverly) Coombs and their children, Jennifer (Brian) Schwartz, Jill, Andy, Amy and Laura; and daughter, Nancy Tamashunas and her children, Sara and Michael.

Virgil F. Waddingham

September 27, 2005
 
Virgil Frank Waddingham, 88, of rural Meservey, died on Tuesday, September 20, 2005.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 23, at the Immanuel Reformed UCC in Klemme.

Virgil was born on July 30, 1917, in rural Hancock County, the son of William and Louise Jahnke Waddingham. He married Irene Dirks in 1940. They worked the Waddingham farm which has been in the family for over 100 years.

He was preceded in death by his son, Darrel in 1944; his parents; brothers, Robert and John; and sisters, Belle and Doris.

He is survived by his wife; children, Linda (Ron) Benson, Lyle (Nancy) Waddingham and Arlyn (Nola) Waddingham; brother, Roy; and sister, Lucille.

Wilbur Luick

September 27, 2005
 
Services for Wilbur Luick, a 1935 graduate of the Belmond High School, were held on Friday, September 23, in San Jose, California. A tall, red-haired youth, Wilbur was a prominent figure on the high school basketball court. Later this fall, interment will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Michael M. Becker

Michael M. Becker, 67, of Davenport, died on Friday, September 30, 2005.

He was born on March 6, 1938 in Garner, the son of Leo and Elizabeth Becker. He graduated from the Humboldt High School and Buena Vista College. Later he earned additional degrees.

Michael taught junior high English at Belmond for six years before moving to Palmer-Fonda in 1966 and Davenport in 1969. He married Jane Schoonmaker in Davenport in 1971. He retired from the Davenport schools in 2001 as head of the guidance department.

He is survived by his wife; married daughter; and a son.
