Rita White

Rita Kae White, 68, of Ankeny, died on Monday, May 2, 2005.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 5, at 11:00 a.m., at the Ankeny Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the service, with interment at a later date.

Rita Kay, was born on October 5, 1936 in Hutchins, the daughter of Stanley and Erma Garman. She graduated from the Corwith High School in 1954. She married Kenneth E. White on January 24, 1955. She came from and created a large and loving family.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband; son, Kenneth (Jolene) White; daughter, Julie (Mark) Richardson of Huxley; brothers, Tom, Phillip and Larry Garmen; sisters, Patricia Borman, Shirley Knoer, Kathy Garman and Jane Pruisman; grandchildren, Sara Feldman, Anna Moeckley, Emily and Hunter White; great-grandson, Jonathan Moeckley; and mother-in-law, Dorothea White of Belmond.

James R. Hovelson

James Roy Hovelson, 69, of Clear Lake, died on Friday, May 6, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 10, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with Lay Assistant Richard Scott officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military rites by the Clear Lake VFW.

Jim was born on March 19, 1936 in Osage, the son of Millard and Vida (Larson) Hovelson. The family moved from Osage to Clear Lake when Jim was four. In 1948 the family moved to Decorah where he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church. They returned to Clear Lake where Jim graduated from high school in 1955. He attended the Mason City Junior College for one year before enlisting in the Army. He spent 18 months in Korea and one year at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, then returned to the Mason City Junior College and graduated with his Associate of Arts Degree in accounting.

In 1961, he married Judy Cooling and they had two children, Lisa Marie and Ann Katheryn.

Jim was first employed at the Park Clinic in Mason City as business manager. He moved to Belmond in 1968 and was hospital administrator for 20 years. While in Belmond he was chairman of the Wright County Nurses Advisory Committee, served on the Wright County Compensation Board, was involved with the Belmond Ambulance Service, the Belmond Jaycees, the Belmond Country Club and the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Jim married Valera (Rooks) Coyier, on April 16, 1994, at the Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel, Clear Lake.

He later worked as a real estate agent in Clear Lake and also at the Heartland Inn in Clear Lake. He was a member of the Clear Lake VFW, Zion Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran's Elderberries.

Jim was preceded in death by his father; and step-son, Randy Coyier.

He is survived by his wife, Valera; daughters, Lisa (Neal) Nelson of Belmond and Ann (2nd Lt. Christopher) Brown of Ft. Benning, Georgia; step-daughter, Dawn (Jody) Brosdahl of Thornton; grandchildren, Kyle and Katie Nelson and Taylor, Tess and Tatum Brown; step-grandchildren, Tad and Trent Brosdahl; his mother of Clear Lake; sisters, Janet (Richard) Williams of Port Richey, Florida and Jule (Richard) McCullough of Pine Island, Minnesota; brother, Eric (Mary) Hovelson of Clive; uncle, Lynn "Bud" Larson; and aunt, Helen Potter.

Marie Perkins

Marie "Pat" Perkins, 80, a resident of Klemme and a long time employee of the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, died on Friday, May 6, 2005, at the Muse-Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 9, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Marie Lela, was born on January 25, 1925 in Britt, the daughter of Raymond James and Nora (Johnson) Perkins. She was baptized and confirmed in the Kanawha Lutheran Church. She attended rural schools in Kanawha and Klemme, concluding her education at the Klemme High School.

She made her home with her aunt and uncle, Alice and Hugh Hummel. Marie later made her home at the I.O.O.F. Apartments in Mason City. She was a dedicated employee of the I.O.O.F. facility for more than 40 years, most of her tenure was as an activities associate. She held her position until retirement at age 77.

Marie very much enjoyed times spent with her family and friends, visiting over a cup of coffee. She also loved the outdoors where she spent time raising flowers, gardening and listening to the birds singing. Those who knew her well remember the constant blare of her favorite radio stations. Often the radio was tuned to follow the games of the Hawkeyes. Other activities she enjoyed included working puzzles and sewing. Marie was a long time member of the Rebekah Lodge in Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; aunt and uncle, Alice and Hugh Hummel; and brothers, Delbert, Jerry and Ronald Perkins.

Survivors include her cousins, Leland (Beulah) Hummel of Klemme, Ron (Beverly) Hummel of Ankeny, Lois (Jon) Finlayson of Mason City and Gary (Ann) Hummel of Indianapolis; her half-sisters and half-brothers, June (Henry) Okland of Stonyford, California, Alice Tabb of Westminster, Colorado, Joan Anderson of Jackson, Missouri, Mervin (Carol) Perkins of Forest City, Ramona (Donald) Groebner of New Ulm, Minnesota, Patricia (Leslie) Penning of Algona, Allen Perkins of Quartzite, Arizona, Robert (Marilyn) Perkins of Britt, Karen (Richard) Reher of Custer, Michigan and Kathleen Dorr of Belmond; and special friends, Dagny Schmidt, Marcy (Ardell ) Flaten and Phylis Echelberger.

Marie Lauen

Anna Marie Lauen, 97, died on Friday, May 6, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 1:00 p.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
The Andrews Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.       

Anna Marie was born on March 15, 1908.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Anna Lauen; sister, Jeanette Sands; and brother, Marvin Lauen.

Survivors include her brother, Harry Lauen (Lois Nyman) of St. Paul; and her nieces and nephews.

Merle C. Been

Merle C. Been, 72, of Belmond, died on Monday, May 9, 2005, at his home in Belmond.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 13, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Graveside military rites were provided by the Belmond Honor Guard. The Dugger Ewing Funeral Home of Belmond was in charge of the arrangements.

Merle was born on January 21, 1933, to William "Harley" and Leona (Saltzman) Been in Tingley. He completed high school in 1951 and married Doris Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on October 4, 1952. They lived in Newton where he was employed by Wilding Plumbing & Heating. Merle entered the armed forces during the Korean conflict, and he and Doris lived in the states of Virginia and California until his honorable discharge in 1956.

Merle then entered into various positions in Des Moines related to the printing industry until he decided to venture off and start his own printing career. In 1965 he purchased the Town & Country Advertiser of Wesley and started The Reminder in Belmond. This led to the beginning of Printing Services, Inc. The publication and the printing company expanded many times over the years and now houses the main production plant in Belmond with satellite offices in Mason City and Webster City.

In addition to being owner and president of Printing Services, Merle was the owner of the Winter Texan and co-owner of Farm & Home Publishers, City Directory, Inc., Action Associates, and True Value in Belmond.

Merle enjoyed being a part of and serving his community. He served as a member and past president of the Belmond Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Belmond Industrial Development Corporation and served on the Luick Trust for 21 years. He was involved with the Belmond scouting program where he was honored with the Outstanding Adult Scouter and the District Award of Merit. He was a Belmond Lions Club member, receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and the Warren Coleman Award. Merle was a charter member, past president and stock holder of the Belmond Country Club. He was an active Jaycee member earning numerous awards including Boss of the Year and the Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of the Lake Cornelia Improvement Association and Midwest Free Community Papers where he served as board member and treasurer for over twenty-seven years. Through this organization he was honored with the highest award, Past Presidential Memorial, and was honored with Merle C. Been night where an annual scholarship was given in his name.

Merle was a faithful member of the Belmond United Methodist Church and served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Pastor-Parish Committee, Finance Chairman, usher, and other committees.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marvin, Mark and Mac; sisters, Margaret Dutton and Marilyn Tindle; father-and-mother-in-law, Bill and Edith Johnson; sisters-in-law, Marian Solomon and Gene Johnson; brothers-in-law, Charles Dutton, Max Tindle, Keith, Clare, Lawrence, Merrill, Dean and Marvin Johnson, Joe Thompson, Dale Reynolds, Ben Solomon and Kenny Hosfield.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Steven (Jeri) and Rodney (Laurie) Been; daughter, Jonel (Brian) Worden all of Belmond; sisters, Maudeene (Bud) Swinehart of Des Moines, Marrabell (Earl) Schulz of Vancouver, Washington and Mardell (Don) Donner of Augusta, Georgia; brother, Milo (Naomi) Been of West Des Moines; sisters-in-law, Lillian Been of Palm Harbor, Florida, Nila Been of Goodland, Kansas, Chrystal Johnson of Waverly, Nebraska, Willie Johnson of Newton, Cleone Thompson, Louise Johnson, Cleone Hosfield and Pat Johnson all of Mt. Fr Thomas Currier

The Reverend Father Thomas F. Currier, 78, of Mason City, formerly of Belmond, died on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at the Hospice of North Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 16, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, with Archbishop Jerome Hanus and Father Jon Seda officiating. Interment, with military rites, was in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City. A Scriptural Wake Service was held on Sunday, May 15, at St. Francis Xavier in Belmond.

Organist was Mary Hagedorn and music was by the Holy Family Funeral Choir. Ushers were Cletus Heffern and Mike Hesselink. Casket bearers were Tom Currier, John Currier, Jim Swenson, Steve McLaughlin, Robert Curtis and Larry Kudej.

Father Currier, the son of Fred and Ida (Kolb) Currier, was born on May 16, 1926 in Mason City. He attended Loras College in Dubuque and the St. Louis Theological Seminary. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest with the Archdiocese of Dubuque on May 27, 1950.

Father Currier served for the Diocese of Colorado Springs and the Archdiocese of Dubuque in the cities of Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Mason City, Clermont, Ossian, Nashua, Springville, Marshalltown, Farley, Colorado Springs and Belmond, until his retirement on July 9, 1996. He then returned to the family home in Mason City.

Father Currier was commissioned a Chaplain (1st Lt.) in the Iowa Army National Guard in 1956. He entered active duty in 1966, which took him to Colorado, Vietnam, California and Korea. He was promoted to Colonel in 1976 and retired at that rank in 1986.

His chief interests in ministry were the Catholic grade and high schools where he spent many years teaching. He enjoyed spending time with his German Shepherd dogs and driving his recreational vehicles, which gave him a chance to see God's wonderful world.

Survivors include sisters, Mary Ellen Hanson of Mason City, Florence (Donald) Kudej of Forest City, Marjorie (Roger) Curtis of Mason City and Kathleen (Ralph) Lockwood of Mason City; and brother, Owen (Brenda) Currier of Mason City.

Viola Johnson

Mary Viola Johnson, 94, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, May 14, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Maxine Whitty was organist, Rose Speth was cantor, and Mary Ann Spitler was lector. Ushers were Pat Grant and Mike McLaughlin.

Honorary casket bearers were Helen Dorr, Virginia Studebaker, Rita Redder, Wilma Dorr and Janyce Kluss. Casket bearers were Hugh Kopriva, Jim Swenson, Tom Quigley, Terry Anderson, Ryan Lobdell, Frank Quigley, Brett Lobdell, Dr. Art Benetti and Pat Quigley.

Mary Viola, was born on July 19, 1910, to Frank Quigley and Agnes Brannan Quigley on a farm west of Belmond. The family later moved to a farm north of Goodell. In 1927 they moved to Maple Hill, Iowa where Viola graduated as class valedictorian in 1928. She attended the Fort Dodge Business College and went to work in Belmond on October 15, 1929 as cashier and chief operator for the Central West Telephone Company, a position she held for 21 years. Viola began working at Nolan Drug as a clerk and bookkeeper in the summer of 1955 and continued with Redder Drug until her retirement on October 1, 1984.

Viola was the organist at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Goodell and organist and choir leader at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. She had been involved in music ministry in one capacity or another most of her 94 years.

She was a member of the St. Francis Rosary Society, holding many offices. She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1290 in 1938 and held many offices. She was a charter member and charter secretary of the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary.

Viola married Clifford Johnson at the St. Francis Rectory on February 18, 1950. They were blessed with fifty two years of marriage.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother, John Francis Quigley; sister, Ruth Elizabeth Smith; nephews, Gerald John Sparks, Patrick Francis Smith and Ronald Dale Smith.

Survivors include her step-son, Jack (Beth) Johnson of Rockford, Illinois; sister, Lorraine Sparks of St. Paul, Minnesota; nephews, Dennis (Jayne) Sparks and Robert (Sharon) Smith of St. Charles, Illinois; nieces, Cheryl Anne (Randy) Wedmore of Gilbert, Arizona and Cathy Hendricks Smith of Lexington, Georgia; step-grandchildren, Kari Johnson Bullock, Marc Johnson and Jodi Johnson; grandnieces, Jennifer, Meghan and Caitlin Sparks, Shannon Smith Bloemendaal, Bethany Smith Hughes, Sara-Rebecca Smith, Johanna Quigley Smith, Ariel Smith, Kara (Michael) Fanning and Katie (Robert) Cloyd; and grandnephews, Adam Smith, Timothy Smith and Michael Smith.

Margaret B. Barry

Margaret B. Barry, 95, died on Friday, May 13, 2005, at the Green Hills Retirement Center in Ames.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 19, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly, with Rev. Mike Tauke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Margaret, the daughter of Peter and Emily "Emma" (Sager) Barry, was born on September 12, 1909, on the family farm two miles south of Belmond, where she developed an appreciation of rural life, nature, animals, and a special love for horse and equestrian activities. Much of her leisure time was spent horseback riding.

Following graduation from the Belmond High School she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, receiving a B.A. in Education. Later she earned her Masters Degree from Northwestern University. Margaret began her teaching career in Tama. A few years later she accepted a position in the Des Moines Public Schools where she was a high school English instructor for over 40 years. She taught at the Des Moines Technical High School where she was also a counselor.

Margaret liked to travel and enjoyed many trips to foreign countries. She loved to read, especially the classics, and shared her enthusiasm for famous authors and great literature with her students. Margaret clung to her love of rural living and was thrilled when she had the opportunity to revisit the family farm and check the crops. Young children in the family were very special to her. She nurtured their excitement in reading good books and they looked forward to trips to the library.

After moving to the Green Hills Retirement Center in Ames, Margaret shared her talents by tutoring Iowa State foreign exchange students.

Margaret was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Belmond and St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Des Moines. She was a member of the Iowa Council of Teachers of English and Delta Kappa Gamma International teachers association.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Eleanor Barry.

Donald Busick

Donald "Booie" Busick, 71, of Forest City, died on Friday, May 13, at the Muse Norris Hospice Center in Mason City, after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 16, at the Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond.

Donald Duane, was born on January 2, 1934 in Belmond, the second oldest son born to Dale and Alice (McMannus) Busick. He attended school in Belmond and later earned his GED while serving in the Marine Corps.

After his service, Donald worked in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where he married Rosada Postin in 1958. The couple moved back to Belmond where Don was employed by Acco Seeds for many years, working test plots, germinating corn, etc. Their marriage was later dissolved. A few years later he started working for Winnebago Industries as a press operator and moved to Forest City. He retired in 1996.

In his leisure time Don enjoyed fishing, bowling, horse shoe tournaments, and playing harmonicas. He was the Wright County and Belmond City bowling champion in the mid 50's. He took great pride in being the first bowler to roll a 700 scratch series in 1958 in Belmond. He enjoyed visiting, and he always had a story or a joke or two. Don also enjoyed time dining, coffeeing, and visiting with his friends and family.

In his later years Don enjoyed watching classic movies, primarily western and suspense, with his dog Max at his side, and he collected a substantial number of movie tapes. He developed a special relationship with the Winnebago transit and local taxi driver, Ron Bronson after he could no longer drive himself. He had much praise for Helen Alne who often cared for Max.

He was preceded in death by Rose; his grandparents; his parents; brothers, Dale, Jr., Darrel and Harold; sister, Darlene Baker; and father and mother-in-law, Doug and Florence Poston.

Don is survived by his daughter, Suzette (Keith) Hughes of Truesdale; brothers, Darwin (Joan) Busick of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Ken (Carole) Busick of Mason City and Doug Busick of Britt; sisters, Shirlene (George) Van Den Heuvel of Klemme, Ramae (Eddie) Schuver of Goodell and Rosetta Busick and special friend, Jim Peterson of Lake Cornelia; 28 nieces and nephews; 53 great-nieces and nephews, and special friend, Jean Thompson.

Gladys J. Summers

Gladys J. Summers, 103, of Belmond, died on Sunday, May 15, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 18, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Gladys Jeanette Roseland, daughter of John J. and Gertrude (Christopherson) Roseland, was born on March 24, 1902 in Eagle Grove. Her mother died when she was eight days old and she was raised in the foster home of Rasmus and Brita Vevle of Eagle Grove.

Gladys married Hiram Austin Summers on February 20, 1924. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be remembered by family and friends for her kringla and other baked goods. She had a smile for everyone and a good sense of humor.

Gladys worked for a number of years at the Belmond Community Hospital and at Keith's Coffee Cup Café.

Gladys belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Senior Citizens, Grandmothers Club and the Trinity Lutheran Church Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents; foster parents; husband; sisters, Jennie Willard, Clara McCormick and Agnes Hoffbuhr; half-brother, Arthur Roseland; foster brothers, Oliver Vevle, Carl Vevle and Mendus Vevle; foster sister, Sophie Hovland; daughter, Bea Lanferman; grandsons, Duane Summers, Scott Lanferman and an infant grandson; granddaughter, Roxanne Summers; and great-grandson, Jeremy Williams.

Gladys is survived by her children, William Summers of Wichita Falls, Texas, Robert (Carolyn) Summers of Belmond, Bernadine (Bob) Cooke of Belmond and Elaine (Norman) Lester of Goldfield; sister-in-law, Lila Roseland of Eagle Grove; grandchildren, Steven Summers of San Antonio, Texas, Denise (Ron) Schiemer of Waianae, Hawaii, Tanya (David) Ferguson of Daegu, South Korea, Matthew Summers of Dallas, Texas, Timothy Summers of Aiea, Hawaii, Toni (Jim) Williams of Clarion, Linda (Jim) Boyd of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Richard Summers of Belmond, Mitchell Summers of Belmond, Debra (Wendel) Whipple of Mason City, Diane (Jon) Crawford of Belmond, Lynn A. Barbara A. Rickert

Barbara Ann Rickert, of Clear Lake, California, died on Sunday, May 22, 2005, while surrounded by her family. Interment was held on Friday, May 27, at Lower Lake, California.

Barbara was born on March 5, 1934 in Independence, Missouri, the daughter of Harold and Jessie Schmidt. She was an avid quilter, loved to square dance, and researching Civil War history.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; daughter, Kathy (David) Luiz; sons, Jim (Cheri) Rickert, Joel Rickert, Jerry (Judy) Rickert and Jon (Rebecca) Rickert; sisters, Susan Heginger of Belmond and Jean Tuckfield of Overland Park, Kansas; brother, Jim Schmidt of Topock, Arizona; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arthur Homervold

Arthur Homervold, 85, of Clarion, died on Saturday, May 21, 2005, at the Wright Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 26, at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, with Pastor Gary Boen officiating. Burial will be held at 5:00 p.m., at the Mamreland Cemetery near Randall.

Friends may greet the family on Wednesday, May 25, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home, 602 North Main, Clarion and one hour prior to services at the church.

Arthur "Art" Donovon, the son of Peter and Anna (Rolland) Homervold was born on June 11, 1919 in Thor. On November 12, 1942 he married Arlene Charlson at the Lutheran Parsonage in Belmond. Art farmed near Galt for four years and then near Belmond, until he retired in 1992 and moved to Clarion.

Art was an avid sports fan, especially fond of wrestling. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He had been a member of First Lutheran since 1942.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Faye Heykants of Des Moines; grandson, Mark (Donna) Heinzig of Ames; granddaughters, Krista Heinzig and her husband, Jody Ansems of London, England and Kara Heinzig of Des Moines; great-grandson, Peter Heinzig of Ames; and son-in-law, Bill Heinzig of Ankeny.

Arlene Steele

Arlene (Nelson) Steele, died on Saturday, May 21, 2005, in San Diego, California.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 3, at the St. Vincent de Paul Church in San Diego, with burial at the Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Bonita, California.

Arlene was born on April 3, 1915 in Belmond, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Nelson. She graduated from the Belmond High School.

In 1935 she married Howard Thompson and they farmed near Kanawha, until he became ill. In 1942 they moved to San Diego, where Arlene worked as a bookkeeper. Howard died in 1964 and she married Leo Steele in 1967.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and brother, Herbert.

She is survived by her sisters, Olive Hopkey of San Diego, Lucille Gourley of Schaumburg, Illinois and Helen (Bill) Pratt of Des Moines; and sister-in-law, Laurine Nelson of St.Cloud.

Leona Wenzel

Leona Mae Wenzel, 92, of Belmond, died on Monday, May 23, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 27, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 26, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Leona Mae Koenen, was born on May 15, 1913, on the family farm near Meservey, to parents John and Annie Eckhoff Koenen. She attended school through eighth grade in Meservey. After school she helped on the family farm. She also helped in many homes with new babies and mothers.

Leona attended Sunday School at the Meservey Reformed Church. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John in Belmond in 1943.

Leona married Elmer Wenzel on September 24, 1940 in Manson. They farmed near Meservey, where Leona enjoyed gardening, embroidery, and canning. She was also a wonderful baker. They lived on the farm until Elmer's death in 1970.

Leona then moved to Belmond, where she belonged to the Grandmother's Club and ladies circle at the church. Most of all, Leona enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Emery; grandson, Matthew Wenzel; brothers, Alvin (Bud) Koenen and Virgil Koenen; and sister, Edna Trager.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Wenzel of Alexander; sons, Merlin (Kathryn) Wenzel of Phoenix and Gene (Karen) of Mt. Pleasant; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Phyllis Steenhard of Meservey; and sister-in-law, Irene Koenen of Meservey.
