Richard A. Hanson

March 8, 2005

Richard A. Hanson, 55, of Klemme, died on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 7, at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with burial in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Richard Allen, the son of John August and Ardella Darlene Schneider Hanson, was born on August 23, 1949 in Mason City. He graduated from the Klemme High School. He worked in several places as an auto body painter.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William Schneider and William and Rebecca Hanson.

Survivors include his parents of Klemme; grandmother, Lydia Schneider of Garner; children, Shelly Hanson (Jeremy Eenhuis) and Jason (Patti) Hanson of Klemme; sister, Janelle (Herman) Meyer of Mason City; brothers, Dennis Hanson of Garner and Ron (Barb) Hanson of Michigan, and special friend, Julie Haugen of Klemme.

Evelyn M. Obrecht

March 8, 2005

Evelyn Marie Obrecht, 82, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 4, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery, Belmond.

Evelyn Marie, daughter of Justin and Julia Kiplinger Lowenberg, was born on July 1, 1922 at Goodell. She attended school in Belmond.

She married Edward (Moke) Obrecht on April 13, 1941 in Albert Lea, and they made their home in Belmond.

Evelyn was a devout member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved her "supreme pizzas". Many friends and relatives enjoyed coffee with Ev when she served homemade goodies.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, Greg; daughter-in-law, Deb (Ellingston) Obrecht; great-granddaughter, Kylie Little; five brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include children, Dean Obrecht of Mason City, Dana Obrecht of Warrensburg, Missouri, DaLon (Sue) Obrecht of Belmond and Denise (Keith) Mayer of Osage; grandchildren, Daryn Obrecht of Austin, Texas, Brad (Laura) Mayer of Spirit Lake, Jennifer (Steve) Little of Andover, Minnesota, Staci Mayer of Ankeny, Joshua (Cory) Obrecht of Bondurant, Melissa (Jon) Barkema of Bondurant, Jeff, David and Katie Obrecht of Belmond; great-grandchildren, Kennedy Little, Gabriel Barkema, Kinnick Obrecht and Tysen Barkema; brothers, Richard (Muriel) Lowenberg of Anaheim, California and Raymond (Millie) Lowenberg of Belmond.

Arielle Z. Brown

March 8, 2005

Arielle Zaelyn Brown, six-weeks, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at her home in Rowan.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 7, at the Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond, with Rev. Janet Wearda officiating. Casket bearers were Quentin and Wyatt Newton.

Arielle, the infant daughter of ZoAnn Brown, was born on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at the Mercy Hospital in Mason City. During her brief life she blessed her family with many special memories. Her beautiful smile and playful personality will be etched in their hearts forever, and they will miss the opportunity to share their love and dreams with her.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents.

Survivors include her mother; sister, Zelexis of Rowan; siblings, Wyatt, Quentin and Savannah Newton of Illinois; aunt, Jill Robson and her daughter, Reica of Rowan; uncle, Bruce Robson of Mesa, Arizona; and aunts, Linda McDaniels and Becky Vedder of Illinois.

Marjorie E. Gabrielson

March 8, 2005

Marjorie E. Gabrielson, 81, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at her residence in Belmond.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 7, at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Organist was Eldoris Bunnell and soloist was Marilyn Janssen. Casket bearers were Tom Amsbaugh, Bryan Kuester, Ryan Lobdell, Scott Davies, Larry Kinseth and Fred Burnham. Honorary casket bearers were her great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Evelyn was born on July 1, 1923 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of Richard and Hallie (Thomas) Parker. She was baptized on June 29, 1931. She attended the Belmond Public Schools and the La James School of Cosmetology in Mason City.

On December 3, 1939, she married Harold Wolf in Clarion. Later they moved to Des Moines, returning to Belmond in 1943.

Marjorie enjoyed being a campfire leader, and she was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She worked in merchandising and also at Farm and Home Publishers. Her most cherished time was spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, Harold; her parents; and brother, Bernard and wife, Helen Parker.

Survivors include her daughters, Vicki (Carroll) Morris of Avondale, Arizona and Debra (Charles) Hanson of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Rick (Angie) Kinseth, Laurie (Tom Amsbaugh) Steenblock, Kim (Bryan) Kuester, Michelle (Jeremy) Rojas, Michael Morris, Denise Hanson, David Hanson, Danny (Shelly) Hanson, Darrin (Shelli) Hanson and Lisa (Justin) Clark; step-grandchildren, LuAnn Brown, Kay Zahn and Rusty Morris; twenty-six great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sisters, Dorothy (Russell) Dow and Patricia Edgerton; brother, Richard (Patricia) of Franklin, Tennessee; and sister-in-law, Margaret Clagget of Clarion.

Leslie D. Gruis

March 8, 2005

Leslie D. Gruis, 55, of Meservey, died on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 5, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel in Mason City.

Leslie Dee was born on June 8, 1949 in Mason City. He was adopted by Marie (Albers) Gruis in 1961. He graduated from Meservey-Thornton, Grand View College, and the University of Iowa. He worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Les moved to Seattle, Washington in 1970 and returned to Iowa in 1992. He was employed by True Value Hardware in Belmond.

Leslie enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, lawn care, Yahtzee, Uno, studying military history, toy tractors, and attending toy shows.

Leslie was preceded in death by his mother, Marie; and brother, Neal.

He is survived by his sisters, Wanda Harrell of Omaha, Nebraska, Betty Fay of Lenox, Marlie Meyer of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Dori Alley of Glenwood and twin sister, Jessie Sage of Mason City; and brother, Jim Richey of San Diego, California.

Ethyl Thompson

March 8, 2005

M. Ethyl Thompson, 100, of Belmond, died on Friday, March 4, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 8, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.

JoAn Skyrme was organist and Cyndy McNulty was soloist. Casket bearers were Darl Abbas, Gary Ruka, Dick Beukema, Glen Mouw, Todd Barkema and Amber Beukema.

Mildred Ethyl, the daughter of McClennahan (Mac) and Anna Klein Thompson, was born on February 18, 1905 in Belmond. As a little girl she lived on a farm northeast of Goodell. In 1915, her family moved to Belmond.

Ethyl graduated from the Belmond High School in 1923. Then she worked for a lumber and construction firm and also a bank in Klemme. In 1942 she moved to Hallock, Minnesota, where she worked for the Northwestern State Bank. She retired in 1970 and returned to Belmond in 1978. She entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1999.

Ethyl enjoyed traveling and sewing. A master seamstress, she and her mother were accomplished at creating and mending clothing and quilts. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church.

Ethyl is survived by numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Florence (Arthur) Ruka; nephews, Lyle Ruka and Merle Ruka; and niece, Eleanor (Don) Abbas.

Wallace F. Johnston

March 8, 2005

Wallace F. Johnston, 83, of Belmond, died on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at the USA Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 9, at 1:30 p.m., at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with Pastor Marv Lornez officiating. Interment was in the Alexander Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Allen Warwick, John Walrod, Michael Walrod, Larry Suntken, Doug Suntken and Roger Robb.

Wallace, the son of Harold F. and Marie Shine Johnston, was born on May 3, 1921 in Brooklyn, Iowa. He grew up in the Brooklyn area.

Wallace married Ellen Suntken in 1951. They made their home in the north central Iowa area. Trucking was the work of his life, and it was an occupation he loved. Wally retired trucking from National Bi-Products in Belmond.

He enjoyed tinkering on cars and playing "Mr. Fixit." Wally was a devoted husband to his wife and was a member of the Teamsters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in July 2004; son, Harold in 2003; and a sister.

Wally is survived by his son, Clarence of Holmes; daughter, LaNae (Mike) Walrod of Latimer; daughter-in-law, Lelani of Belmond; grandchildren, Misty, John, Tammy, Alex, Matt and Annie; great-grandchildren, Corey, Blake and Matthew; and sisters, Elizabeth Graham of California and Ruth Harris of Washington.

Anna Nordman

March 15, 2005

Anna Nordman, 89, died on Sunday, March 13, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 16, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Anna, daughter of George and Dena (Beenan) Vierkant, was born on August 19, 1915, on the family farm south of Meservey. She attended country school and later in life graduated from the La James School of Cosmetology.

She married Lester Hopkey at the First Reformed Church parsonage in Meservey on February 3, 1937. They made their home in Meservey. Lester died in 1969. On December 24, 1972, Anna and Victor Nordman were married at The Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Anna continued her life in Meservey, where she operated a beauty shop for many years. Anna and Vic spent many winters in Texas, enjoying new friends and fishing.

After Vic's death in 1999, Anna moved to an apartment in Thornton. She was a life long member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey. Anna loved to bake, her grandchildren loved her cookies and pie crusts. Anna knitted afghans for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; sisters, Alice, Wilma and Sina; and brothers, Theodore, Herman and William.

Survivors include son, Michael (Barbara) Hopkey of Thornton; step-daughters, Joyce (Don) Dirks and JoAnn (Ken) Schmohe, all of Boulder, Colorado; step-sons, Richard (Patricia) Nordman of Arlington Heights, Illinois and Robert (Polly) Nordman of St. Charles, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Herma Lauen of Garner; and sister-in-law, Henrietta Vierkant of Meservey.

Arvid A. Hansen

March 29, 2005

Arvid Arthur Hansen, 92, died on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 25, at the United Church of Rowan, with burial in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

Arvid Arthur, was born on December 14, 1912, to Arthur and Mabel (Olson) Hansen in rural Rowan. He graduated from the Rowan High School in 1931. A couple of years following graduation, Arvid attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and Iowa State University in Ames. Following that he came home and farmed with his father.

On June 6, 1947, Arvid married L. Mildred Nielsen in Cedar Falls. They farmed the family farm northwest of Rowan for many years. Arvid enjoyed delivering the Des Moines Sunday Register for a number of years, no matter what the weather was like.

Arvid and Mildred retired from farming in the spring of 1973 and moved to Rowan. They traveled to Europe twice and enjoyed their winters in Texas. Their four grandchildren were their delight. Mildred died on February 19, 1984 and Arvid continued to live in Rowan until October 31, 2001, when his health forced him to enter the Belmond Health Care Center.

Music was an important part of Arvid's life, as well as his family. He enjoyed playing in the bands "Achin Hearts" and "Country Cousins". He held musical jam sessions with his children and grandchildren as well as with friends. Arvid took great pride in all the musical instruments he owned and played for community events. He participated in the July 4th parades in Belmond with his piano float.

Arvid was a member of the Rowan Lions Club and the United Church of Rowan. He enjoyed the activities at church. He was known for opening the doors for everyone at Congregate Meals and his willingness to help people in need throughout the community. Photography was also a great passion for Arvid. He enjoyed taking pictures of community events, his children, grandchildren, and at Hansen reunions. He spent several years with the Civil Air Patrol.

In 1994, Arvid began his "Reminisce" column for the Belmond Independent. He took great pride in writing the weekly articles for ten years as well as mailing out his weekly columns to relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son-in-law, Norman Haupt; sister, Edna Bailey; and nephew, Lynn Bailey.

Arvid is survived by son, Darwin of Clarion; daughter, Mariane (Wayne) Vestweber of McAllen, Texas; son, Glenn (Sandy) of Belmond; grandchildren, SSgt Gregory Hansen of Fort Knox, Kentucky, Carl Vestweber of McAllen, Jennifer Hansen of St. Louis, Missouri and Mark Vestweber of Ames; niece, LaNell (John) Brandes of Waterloo; and nephew, Alvin (Becky) Bailey of Rowan.

Joshua A. Christians

March 29, 2005

Joshua Aaron Christians, of Belmond, age 3 months and 2 days, died on Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, March 26, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond.

Joshua Aaron Christians was born on December 20, 2004 in Clarion, the daughter of Nichole Christians and Jimmy Prince. Joshua was such a happy baby and brought much joy to his family. His family will remember him for his strength shown at such a young age.

He was preceded in death by great grandfathers, Lee Robbins and Clarence Christians.

Joshua is survived by his mother of Belmond and father of Mason City; sister, Abby of Belmond; maternal grandparents, Tom and Rita Christians of Belmond; great-grandmothers, Deloris Robbins of Goodell and Bonnie Christians of Klemme; and uncles, Clint (Andrea) Christians and their children, Cale and Cooper and Neil Christians.

Norma Marie Bohman

March 29, 2005

Norma Marie Bohman, 71, of Belmond, died on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 28, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Alexander Cemetery.

Norma Marie, the daughter of Wilson and Grace Olson Stearns, was born on November 16, 1933 in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. She grew up in Walnut Grove, St Peter and Belmond, graduating from the Belmond High School.

Norma married John Bohman in 1950. They made their home near Alexander where John worked on the family farm. Norma worked at the CAL School as a Librarian. A lover of education and learning, Norma, at age 39, attended and graduated from NIACC in Mason City. She was very proud of the fact that she worked for NIACC after her graduation. Norma helped with the GED program, re-education and re-training of adults.

Norma is remembered for her fondness of reading, politics and computers. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Kristen Elizabeth; son-in-law, David Harvison; and brothers-in-law, Arnie Olson and Bernard Bohman.

Norma is survived by her daughter, Melinda Harvison of Houston, Texas; son, Russel of Alexander; grandchildren, Kristen, Heather, Sarah and Jody; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Muriel Knapp of Belle Vista, Arkansas and Ardys Lloyd of Long Beach, California; brother, Charles (Jean) Stearns of Belle Vista; and sisters-in-law, Alberta Bohman and Effie Olson.

Caroline Schmidt

March 29, 2005

Caroline Schmidt, 83, of Belmond, died on Friday, March 25, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 29, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Caroline, the daughter of Bertus and Katie Meinderts Stadtlander, was born on September 23, 1921, on a farm near Meservey. She graduated from the Meservey High School.

On November 11, 1941, she married Leonard Russell Schmidt at the First Reformed Church. They lived their entire married life in the Meservey and Alexander areas where they farmed. After Leonard lost his sight, the couple moved into Meservey in 1974 and then to a condominium in Belmond in 1980.

Caroline had been a member of First Reformed since the age of eighteen, where she was also baptized and confirmed. Caroline served in many capacities, she belonged to the women's group for over 50 years, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was secretary for every committee in the church. She served on the Meservey Apartments Board. Caroline belonged to several senior citizens organizations in Meservey and Belmond and the Little Red School House in Belmond. She enjoyed reading, especially Bible studies, and collecting and trying recipes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Irene; brother, Harvey; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Irene; and cousin, Libby.

Caroline is survived by a sister, Fandelene Van Horn of Sheffield.

William D. Meints

April 5, 2005

William D. Meints, 68, of Kansas City, Missouri, died on Monday, March 28, 2005, at the Grandview Manor in Grandview, Missouri.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 1, with burial in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

William was born in Belmond on December 15, 1936, the son of William L. and Tillie Henn Meints. He was a Gunnery Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was preceded in death by his son, William Meints, Jr.; brother, Conrad Meints; and sister, Esther Halverson.

He is survived by his wife Ayako; daughter, Barbara (Gary) Lingenfelter; son, Robert; brother, Glenn of Belmond; sisters, Grace Haugen of Dows, Karen Ofstethun of Clarion and Marion Carpenter of Alexander; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Grace J. Kalkwarf

April 5, 2005

Grace J. Kalkwarf, 102, died on Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 5, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Dona Cleveland was the organist. Loren Kalkwarf was the soloist and Alberta Kalkwarf was the accompanist. Usher was Roger Moderman. Casket bearers were Delbert Pals, Jerry Pals, Kevin Pals, Vernon Van Horn, Darold Pals, Jim Suntken, Bill Neuberger and Ron Simons.

Grace Johanna was born on March 19, 1903, to John P. and Johanna Frey Pals on a farm southwest of Meservey. She was baptized at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, graduated from the Heidelberg Catechism, and became a member of First Reformed. She attended rural school and attained an eighth grade education. She worked on the family farm.

On Christmas Day 1925, Grace married Dick Kalkwarf at the First Reformed Parsonage. They farmed in the Alexander and Belmond areas for many years. In 1952, they retired and moved to a new home in Belmond. They enjoyed fishing, trips to Minnesota lakes, and playing cards with friends and relatives.

Following retirement, Grace enjoyed bowling and golfing. In her honor the Belmond Country Club named one day a year Grace Kalkwarf Day. She loved many cards games and played for the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary for years. Grace crocheted many doilies and gave her handiwork to family and friends. Since moving to Belmond, Grace had been a member of the United Methodist Church.

In November of 1999, she moved to the Belmond Community Apartments. Due to ill health, Grace entered the Concord Care Center in August of 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick in 1968; son, DuWayne; grandson, Gene Kalkwarf; sisters, Gertrude Musgjerd and Esther Suntken; brothers, Bert, Peter and Richard Pals; and brother-in-law, Art Musgjerd.

Grace is survived by son, Loren (Alberta) Kalkwarf of Garner; daughter-in-law, Denise Kalkwarf of Mesa, Arizona; grandchildren, Charlotte Hanson of Clear Lake, Lu Ann (Mark) Archer of Littleton, Colorado, Mike (Mavine) Kalkwarf of Garner, Sharon (Norman) Bosehardt of Gilbert, Arizona and Diane (Tim) Scott of Payson, Arizona; great-grandchildren, Spencer Klooster, Justin Klooster, Hayley Klooster, Katie Ryder, Tracey Bosehardt, Meredith Kalkwarf and Marty Kalkwarf; sisters-in-law, Grace Pals and Ruth Pals of Belmond; and brother-in-law, Jess Suntken of Meservey.
