Linda (Draper) Whipple
August 16, 2005
Linda Carol (Draper) Whipple, 57, died on Saturday, August 6, 2005,
in her home in West Jordan, Utah,
after a year's battle with cancer. Linda was a BHS
graduate.
Linda was born on November 14, 1947 in Belmond, to
Gerald Raymond and Valva C. Nelson Draper. She married
Dennis Duane Whipple on November 3, 1973 in Goleta, California.
Linda was a devoted and loving wife, mother,
grandmother and sister. She loved to sew, go bowling
and watch NASCAR racing. She especially enjoyed
organizing the annual Las Vegas race trips for her
extended "NASCAR family".
Preceding her in death are siblings, Kathy, Nancy
and Timothy Draper.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis; son, Tyler
(Steph) Whipple of West Jordan, Utah; daughters, Jodi Whipple
and Chris Kevern, both of West Jordan, Utah; granddaughter,
Kadynce Kevern of West Jordan, Utah; mother, Valva
Draper of Las Vegas;
father, Gerald of Mason City; brother, Larry (Cheryl)
Draper of South Jordan; and sister, Judy (Bob)
Evangelisti-Huth of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Doris "Jean" Walrod
August 16, 2005
Doris "Jean" Walrod, died on Sunday, August 7, 2005.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday,
August 10, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with
Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. JoAn Skyrme played the
piano and Marilyn Janssen sang. Interment will take
place at a later date in the Belmond Cemetery.
Jean was born on
September 18, 1926 in Rockwell City, to James and
Minnie (Ehler) Ryan. She lived on farms near Rockwell
City, Dows and Rowan. She grew up in a large family
(five brothers and four sisters, sandwiched between
two sets of twins). She graduated from the Rowan High
School in 1944 and worked as a teletype operator for
Western Union in Chicago. In 1946 she met William
(Bill) Walrod. After a four-month courtship they were
married on January 15, 1947.
Jean enjoyed the
role of homemaker and mother. She worked for twelve
years in the medical records department at the Belmond
Community Hospital. Jean loved to travel with her
family, and there were many camping trips, ranging
from weekend jaunts nearby and longer trips north or
west.
Jean was always a
willing volunteer. She was a member of the United
Methodist Church, serving at various times on the
administrative council, trustees and staff parish
committee. She also served faithfully in the United
Methodist Women and Rebecca Circle. She had been a
member of the Progress Club since 1967 and had worked
in the bereavement program for the Wright County
Hospice. Jean also was active in the Democratic Party,
volunteering many hours for various candidates over
the years.
Jean was preceded
in death by her husband; son, Ricky; her parents;
brothers, Harold, Walter, Glen and Daryl; and sisters,
Alice Slatkoske and Ethel Korth.
Jean is survived
by her daughter, Veloice (Peter) Huck of Eden Prairie,
Minnesota; son, Todd (Ann) Walrod of Leland;
grandchildren, Megan (Mike) Adams of Burnsville,
Minnesota, Emily (Karlin) Bilchuk of Princeton, New
Jersey, Kayla Huck and Trent and Jane Walrod;
brother, Ed (Marge) Ryan of Kanawha; sisters, Elsie
(Wilbur) Rockow-Schroeder of Dows and Darlene Aldrich
of Belmond; and sister-in-laws, Melba and Vernie Ryan.

Delores M. Jackson
August 9, 2005
Delores M. Jackson, 70, of Rowan, died on Monday, August 8,
2005, at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion.
Funeral services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, August 11, at the
United Church of Rowan, with Pastor Nancy Hofmeister
officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in
Rowan.
Visitation will be
held on Wednesday, August 10, from
5-7:00 p.m., at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home, 602
North Main, Clarion, and one hour prior to services at
the church on Thursday.
Delores, the daughter of Kenneth and Gladys
Whitten Lycke, was born on July 27, 1935 in Grundy
Center. She graduated from the Rowan High School with the
class of 1953. She lived in Webster City from 1960
until 1965, then returned to Rowan where she has since
resided. Delores was united in marriage with Jim
Jackson in Rowan.
Delores enjoyed morning coffee at the Town Mart.
She was an excellent cook and was well known for
baking pies, especially apple. She enjoyed crocheting,
embroidering and caring for her flower garden. Over
the years Delores baby-sat for many children in Rowan.
She was a member of the United Church of Rowan.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Delores is survived by her husband; daughter, Barb
Hyland of Rowan; son, Richard Taylor of Rowan; brother,
Ivan Dean Lycke (Elsie) of Alden; step-children, Gary
Jackson, Dwayne Jackson, David Jackson and Diane
Vasquez; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren;
and three step-great-grandchildren.

Dora Ann "Miki" Quigley
August 16, 2005
Dora Ann (Miki) Quigley, 68, of Belmond, died on
Monday, August 8,
2005.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 12, at the St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond, with Father
Chris Podhajsky officiating. Burial was in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Miki, the daughter
of Leo William and Ann Eva (Mary) Meleny, was born on
February 10, 1937 in Britt. She attended the Garner
High School where she loved cheerleading.
Miki married
Patrick Quigley on November 7, 1953 in Belmond. She
devoted her life to her children and grandchildren.
She was very proud of them all.
Miki was a very
caring person who loved people and never knew a
stranger. She was an avid reader and excellent cook.
She had a passion for shopping, especially garage
sales and craft shows.
Miki was a member
of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; infant son, Robert; grandson, Waylen Bonte; and infant grandsons, Wade Ashley and
Anthony Micheal Burt.
Survivors include
her husband; son, William (Sheryl) of Clear Lake;
daughters, Patricia (Scott) Ostermann of Woden and
Pamela (Vern) Gifford of Kanawha; eight grandchildren;
and five brothers and sisters.

Paul R. Nassen

Paul Richard Nassen, 65, of Denver, Colorado, died on
Wednesday,
August 10, 2005, at his home.
Funeral services were held at Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in Denver. Interment was in
the Logan National Cemetery.
Paul was born in
Story County on August 19, 1939, the son of Harvey and
Stella (Durby) Nassen. He was baptized at the Bergen
Lutheran Church in Roland and confirmed at the Trinity
Lutheran Church in Belmond. He grew up on farms near
Story City and Belmond, graduating from the BHS in
1957. He attended St. Olaf College, the University of
Colorado, and Regis College.
He served in the
Army from 1963-1965 and was stationed in Fort Devens,
Massachusetts and at Frankfurt, Germany.
He married Elaine
Paulette Bergsgaard in Denver on November 28, 1981.
Paul worked at
Martin Marietta, Haugland Computer Service, and the
State of Colorado Departments of Revenue and Human
Services. He retired as a Principal Systems Analyst in
1995.
Paul and Elaine
enjoyed traveling, including trips to Norway, Ireland,
Egypt, France and Hawaii. They had many ski and golf
vacations, attended musical performances at the Denver
Center for the Performing Arts, and enjoyed spending
time with family and friends. His nieces and nephews
especially enjoyed Paul's company.
Paul was active at
Our Savior's, serving as council president and
singing in the choir and a church quartet.
Paul was diagnosed
with pulmonary fibrosis in May 2001 and pulmonary
hypertension in June 2005.
Survivors are his
wife, Elaine; sisters, Ruby Triggs of West Branch,
Myrtle Harper of Story City and Marie McClain of
Colorado Springs; brother, Harlan (Audrey) Nassen of
Suntree, Florida; and seven nieces and a nephew.

Carolyn Smith
August 16, 2005
Carolyn Kay Smith, 62, of Meservey, died on Thursday, August 11, 2005,
at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
August 15, at the Immanuel Reformed Church, rural
Belmond, with Pastor Rob Ford officiating. Burial was
in the church cemetery.
Carol Severson, was
the organist and Gary and Velda Steenblock sang. Don
and Alvin Braner were ushers. Casket bearers were
Eugene Pals, George Wenzel, Larry Pals, Herb Greiman,
Larry Severson and Herb Basener.
Carolyn was born on
March 27, 1943 in Manilla, the daughter of Robert and
Mary Ella (Schnuettgen) McCaffrey. She attended the
Manilla High School and the Stuart School of
Cosmetology in Sioux City. Then she worked as a hair
stylist in Forest City.
Carolyn married
Robert Smith on December 27, 1963, at the Immanuel
Reformed Parsonage. She and Robert spent ten months in
Japan when he was in the military service. Then they made
their home in the Belmond and Meservey areas. Carolyn
was a hair stylist in Belmond and then spent fifteen
years at the school as a head cook. Due to her health,
she retired from the school one and a half years ago.
Carolyn enjoyed
cooking and was always looking for new recipes. She
had a knack for decorating with flowers, food, lace
and antiques, which she enjoyed shopping for. Carolyn
valued spending time with her family, campouts, flea
markets, back-road sight seeing and gardening.
Survivors include
her husband; children, Kim (Mark) Soma of Belmond,
Steve (Devin) of West Branch, Roy (Monique) of Cedar
Rapids, Kerri (Dave) Pals of Belmond, Brandon of
Belmond and Bryan of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren
and great-grandchild, Ashley, Sarah, Katelyn, Makayla,
Jenna, Rebecca, Andrew and Brooklyn; mother, Mary
McCaffrey of Denison; sisters, Karen Brockelsby of
Ankeny and Marilyn (Pat) Stoll of Denison; and
brothers, Roger of Denison, Mark (Jan) of Red Oak and
Daryl (Mickey) of South Sioux City.

Mable V. Christensen
August 16, 2005
Mable V. Christensen, 94, died on Friday, August 12, at the
Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday,
August 16, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Britt with
burial in the Belmond Cemetery.
Mable Viola, the
daughter of James and Anna (Helt) Reed, was born on July
8, 1911 at Aredale. She attended school in Franklin
County. She married George Melvin Christensen in 1931.
They farmed west of Belmond until 1954 when they moved
west of Klemme. She lived the past six months at the
care center.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; husband in 1983; daughter,
Shirley; sons, Lloyd and Richard; brothers, John,
Orville, Don and Merlin Reed; and sisters, Velma McSpaden, LaVon Steere and Bernadine Johnson.
Survivors include
her children, Marlys (Larry) Ridley and Velma (Louis) Yender of Arkansas and George Robert (Carolyn)
Christensen and Raymond Christensen of Britt;
sister-in-law, Alice Christensen of Michigan; sisters,

Lloyd Cunningham
August 16, 2005
William "Lloyd" Cunningham, 88, a life long resident
of Belmond and Goodell, died on Sunday, August 14, 2005, at the
Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on
Thursday, August 18, at 1:30 p.m., at the Belmond United
Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating.
Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church
Cemetery east of Belmond. Visitation will be held on
Wednesday from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Andrews Funeral Home
and one hour prior to the services at the church on
Thursday.
William Lloyd, was
born on May 3, 1917 near Boone, the son of Herman and
Ruby Boone Cunningham. He moved with his family as a
young child to a farm near Goodell. He graduated from
the Belmond High School in 1936. Lloyd married Erma
Arlene Frohling on June 22, 1937 at the Little Brown
Church near Nashua.
Lloyd was very
much a family man, and both he and Erma worked very
hard to instill the value of education in the lives of
their children. He worked as a mechanic at the Ford
Garage in Belmond for 18 years and later purchased an
auto body shop which he operated for 20 years.
Lloyd was a member
of the Belmond United Methodist Church, where he was a
long time usher. He was a 50-year member of the
Masonic Lodge and was a long time member of the
Eastern Star, where he served as Worthy Patron numerous
times. He had also been involved in the I.O.O.F. and
was one of the charter members of the Belmond Country
Club.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; and wife, Erma in October 2000.
Survivors include
sons, Marlan (Karen) Cunningham of Ankeny and Kirk
(Cathy) Cunningham of Prescott, Arizona; daughter,
Glenda (Larry) Field of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother,
Harold (Marcella) Cunningham of Goodell;
grandchildren, Lauri (David) Moore, David (Lisa)
Cunningham, Elizabeth (Brad) Koecheritz, Sarah
Cunningham, Derek (Carla) Field and Nathan (Kim)

Lyle L. Lewellyn
August 23, 2005
Lyle L. Lewellyn, 90, of Clarion, died on Tuesday, August 16, 2005,
at the hospital in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Thursday,
August 18, at the First United Methodist Church in
Clarion, with Pastor Don Morrison officiating. Burial
was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Lyle Lawrence, was
born on July 16, 1915, on a farm north of Clarion, the son
of Albert R. and Myrtle (Henry) Lewellyn. He attended
country school in Lake Township and graduated from the
Clarion High School in 1933.
On September 8,
1940, he married Mildred Jacobson at the home of her
parents. The couple farmed for two years north of
Clarion, four years north of Dows, and then moved
north of Galt in 1947, where they farmed until 1978
when Lyle retired. In 1982 the couple moved to
Clarion.
Lyle was a 4-H
Leader for four years, county committeeman, township
assessor in Lake and Lincoln Townships for five years,
Wright County Extension Director for four years, ASCS
Committeeman for 10 years, and Farm Bureau
Vice-President for two years. He was a member of the
Untied Methodist Church in Clarion and served on
several committees.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; four infant brothers; brothers,
Donald and Vern; and sisters, Mary, Ruth and Vera.
Lyle is survived by his wife; sons, Donald (Marnie),
Dale (Elaine), Larry (Sue) and Richard (Shari);
daughter, Janet (Kevin) Albrecht; nine grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; and sister, Isel King.

Milo Roberts
August 23, 2005
Milo Richard Martin Roberts, 85, died on Wednesday, August 17, 2005,
at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, August 20, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond,
with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Full military honors
were rendered, and a private family interment will
take place later at the Belmond Cemetery.
Milo was born on
August 7, 1920 in Latimer, the son of Harry and Helena
(Hansen) Roberts. He attended the St. Paul's Lutheran
School and graduated from the Latimer High School.
In
his youth he was an avid sportsman and athlete, even
trying out as a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals
when he was eighteen. He later owned a Western Auto
Store in Gowrie until volunteering for a three-year
tour in the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II. He enlisted
as an apprentice seaman in June of 1942, completing a
course of instruction at the Radio Telephone Signal School
while serving on the West Coast. After discharge in
1945 he operated the Belmond Ice and Coal Company.
Prior to operating
his Western Auto Store, Milo married Marjorie Wedeking
of Nemaha. She passed away after a lengthy illness. In
July 1957, he married Sophie Van Drie of Melvin.
In 1956, he began
driving a school bus for the Belmond Community
Schools. Later he was also a custodian and became a
full-time school employee. Milo drove school bus
routes for nearly 25 years, logging 20-30 thousand
miles per year.
His retirement
interests included woodworking and making craft items
with Sophie, selling them at local craft shows. They
enjoyed wintering in southern Texas and fishing trips
to Minnesota with friends and family.
Milo was preceded
in death by his parents; his first wife; brother,
Ralph; sister, Loretta Rodemeyer; nephew, Dalton
Rodemeyer; and grand-niece, Patti Rodemeyer.
He is survived by
his wife, Sophie of Belmond; sons, Raymond of Tucson,
Arizona, Timothy of Shenandoah and Stuart of Omaha;
daughters, Michele Stephens of Pulaski, Tennessee and
Paula Roberts-Cogut of Cross River, New York; sister,
Mildred Oliver; cousin, Orvetta Brawner; and many
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.

Leo J. Butler

Leo J. Butler, 81, of Williams, died on Wednesday, August 17, 2005,
at the Hamilton Hospital in Webster City.
Funeral services
were held at the St. Mary's Catholic church with burial in
the
St. Mary's Cemetery.
Leo James, was born
on
November 29, 1923 in Webster City, the son of Thomas
P. and Mary T. (Collins) Butler. He married Lorene
Mary Smith at St. Mary's on October 10, 1946. They
farmed for 53 years.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; and his wife.
Survivors include
his
daughter, Mary (Paul) Fankhauser of Williams; son, Jim
Butler of Belmond; granddaughter, Cheri (Terry)
Matthews of Nebraska; and grandsons, Brian Fankhauser
of Slater, Tom (Dawn) Butler of Belmond and Dan Butler
of California.

Edna V. Kroeger
August 23, 2005
Edna V. Kroeger, 93, died on Saturday, August 20, 2005, at her home
in Belmond.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 23, at the
Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, with Pastor Janet Wearda
officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Edna, the daughter
of John A. and Augusta Jacobs Berghefer, was born six
miles east of Belmond, on August 12, 1912. She attended
school in Garner and Belmond, graduating with the
Belmond Class of 1930.
Edna took Normal
Training in high school and taught two years in
Crawford County where she met and married Peter Kroeger. They farmed and worked for farmers in Charter
Oak and later near Belmond.
When WW II broke out,
Peter enlisted and Edna taught in a country school
close to Belmond for two years. She moved to Omaha and
worked for Western Electric, making communications
equipment. A year later she was called to teach in a
country school east of Rockwell, where she remained
until Peter was discharged. Then they farmed near
Meservey until the Korean War, when Peter once again
enlisted. Edna taught second grade at Meservey. The
following year she attended Iowa State Teachers
College until Pete was discharged. Edna taught at
Clear Lake for a year. She went back to school and
taught the last twenty years in Waterloo.
After retiring,
they traveled south to Texas, Arizona and Florida. She
loved traveling by camper to historical and other well
known places in the U.S. They met many new friends.
She enjoyed various crafts and was an avid reader.
Edna belonged to
the Kappa Phi Sorority while at UNI and participated
in golf, tennis and swimming. She was a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars
Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association, United
Methodist Church and church circle, UNI Alumni
Association, League of Women Voters, and Country
Friendly Neighbor's Club.
Edna was preceded
in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Donna;
son-in-law, Carl; granddaughter, Debra; sisters, Lola
and Doris; and brother, Boyd.
Survivors include
her
grandchildren, Keith (Karen) Traeger of Eagle Grove,
James (Elizabeth) Traeger of Grundy Center, Kathryn
Quam of Thornton, Larry (Deb) Traeger of Lake Havasu
City, Arizona, Kevin Traeger of Eagle Grove, Craig
(Dawn) Traeger of Renwick, Lorie (Richard) Halsne of
Thornton and Christa Traeger of Alexandria, Virginia;
fourteen great-grandchildren; four
great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ina Stille of
Garner and Garnet Beenen of Newton; and nieces and
nephews, especially Cyndy and Sheila.

Arlin "Ole" Olsen
August 30, 2005
Arlin C. Olsen, 89, died on Friday, August 26, 2005, at the
Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August
29, at the Klemme United Methodist Church, with Rev.
Paddy Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Ell
Township Cemetery near Klemme.
Margaret Tue was
organist and Lance Arnold was soloist. Ushers were
Arlyn Waddingham and Bill Arnold. Honorary bearers
were Kenneth Kluckhohn, Henry Kaduce, Sam Spilman,
Carl Heginger, Dan Spilman and Merle Pannhoff. Casket
bearers were Jim Olsen, Ryan Olsen, Larry Kluckhohn,
Shannon Graves, Greg Olson and Jean Olsen.
Arlin, the son of
Knute and Aleta (Rear) Olson, was born on June 9, 1916, on
his parents farm near Clear Lake. He attended the
Eden Country School and Union No. 2.
Arlin married
Christina Schwartz on July 6, 1946, at the Little Brown
Church. They resided near Clear Lake and later in
Klemme.
Arlin loved
trucks. At age 11 he had built his first truck using a
Model T. Later he hauled hogs in a 1938 Ford truck.
Over the years he trucked at night and farmed during
the day. Christina would help with the trucking
business when necessary. From 1949 to 1972 Arlin and
Christina were in the trucking business full time. In
1972 Arlin started driving a U.S. Mail truck between
Omaha and Minneapolis, a route running 800 miles seven
days per week. He retired in 1985 but continued to
work on cars, trucks and lawn mowers at their home in
Klemme.
Preceding Arlin in
death were his parents; sisters, Gladys Bier and
Mildred Van Laere; son, Roger; and an infant brother and
sister.
Survivors include his
wife, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center;
sons, Merlyn (Audrey) Olson of Santa Maria,
California, Harland (Janet) Olsen of Mason City, Randy
(Monica) Olsen of Garner; daughter, Corrine (Susie)
Olsen of Klemme; daughter-in-law, Linda Olson of
Ventura; brother, Clare Olson of Clear Lake;
grandchildren, Doni (Bill) Schaefer, Denette Olson,
Deanne (Mike) Luis, Dan (Eenja) Olson, Greg and (Kim)
Olson, Ryan (Tina) Olsen, Shannon (Gary) Graves, Jim
Olsen and Jean Olsen; and great-grandchildren, Will, Sarah
and Evan Schaefer, Lane, Levi and Aubrey Luis, Jacob,

George F. Pals
August 30, 2005
George F. Pals, 78, of Belmond, died on Saturday, August 27, 2005,
at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held
at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, August 31, at the St. John
Lutheran Church, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson
officiating. Burial, with military rites, will take
place in the Belmond Cemetery.
George was born
east of Belmond on April 27, 1927. He was the son of
John D. L. and Tena (Sandman) Pals, the second of
eight children. He attended the Pleasant Township
Country School #6.
George farmed with
his brothers and parents for many years southeast of
Belmond. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He
took training at Fort Riley, Kansas and was sent to
Korea where he served in communications during the
Korean War. He seriously injured his right leg and was
hospitalized in Japan.
After the service,
George purchased portable feed grinders and did custom
milling for farmers. Later he worked at the welding
shop in Rowan. He became an expert welder and worked
for Triggs Manufacturing. George enjoyed farming with
his brother, Wilbur and liked to attend auctions. He
was self-sufficient, independent, and a great friend
to many people. George was a life long member of St.
John's where he was baptized and confirmed.
George was
preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wilbur; and
sister, Arlene Langhoff of Mason City.
Survivors include
his
brothers, Arthur (Marjorie) of Dows and Herbert of
Belmond; sisters, Helen (Edward) Schnittjer of Clarion
and Mary Jane Isaacson of Melbourne; and brother,
Jerry (Eileen) Pals of rural Belmond.
