Robert Churchouse
January 9, 2002
Robert Adams Churchouse, 84, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, January 2, 2002,
at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, 2002, at
the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond, with Pastor John Murray officiating.
Burial was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell, with military rites by
the Belmond Honor Guard.
Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist and
Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Ushers were Denny Ward and Steve Sorenson. Casket bearers were Scott Hickman, Dave Riggs, Mike
Uhlenhopp, Gary Berkland, Brett Lobdell, and Patrick Dunavan.
Robert, the son of George M. and Josephine Adams Churchouse, was born
on September 19, 1917, in Hampton. He grew up in Hampton,
where he attended school and graduated from the Hampton High School in 1936.
After high school, Bob began working for Jacob E.
Decker and Sons. He worked 43 years in livestock procurement for Jacob E.
Decker and Sons, which later became Armour and Co. Bob retired in 1979. He
then worked at P&G Market in Belmond until February 2001.
Robert served in two historic Army Infantry
Divisions
during WW II. He first served with the 19th Infantry Regiment of the 24th
"Poi Lief" division in the Pacific. He later was selected to be in a cadre
of Regular Army NCOs. With the cadre, he returned to the States to help
activate and train the 42nd Infantry "Rainbow Division". They later were
engaged in the European Theater. At the conclusion of the war, the Rainbow
Division became the Army of Occupation in Austria. He attended Rainbow
Division reunions across the country.
Robert married Anna Albers on December 6, 1947. The couple
made their home in Belmond.
Bob served on the Belmond City Council from 1960 to
1968. He also served on the Planning and Zoning Commission. Bob was a member
of the Belmond Gridiron Club and enjoyed watching the Broncos play. His
hobbies include making historic model walnut sailing ships that were
replicas of museum quality. He and his wife also enjoyed gardening. Bob was
proud of his heritage and was a direct descendent of John Quincy Adams.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Anna, in 1999; and two sisters, Helen and Ruth.
Survivors include daughter, JoAnn Covington of Goodell;
granddaughter, Amy Covington of Kansas City, Kansas; sister-in-law, Jennie
Lieuwen of Belmond; brother-in-law, Edward Albers of Mason City; nieces,
Shirley Fulton of Belmond, Alice Bryant of Minneapolis and Christine Uhlenhopp of Alexander; nephews, Alton Albers of Nevada, Patrick Dunavan of
Mason City and Michael Bryant of Ames.

Joe Negrete
January 15, 2002
Joseph Negrete, 79, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at the
Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 12, 2002,
at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond, with Father David Beckman
and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery,
with graveside military rites provided by the Belmond Honor Guard.
Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist and Jon
Barrett, cantor. Ushers were Terry Anderson and Arthur Benetti. Honorary
casket bearers were, Sonny Greenfield, Jerry Thompson, Don Stoffer, Ed
Stoffer, Ray Lowenberg and Wayne Lein. Casket bearers were, Tyler Nelson,
Victor Mendizabal, Simon Negrete Jr., Richard Argumedo, Robert Negrete and
Richard Kaduce.
Joseph "Joe" Negrete, the son of Simon and Guadalupe (Ramerez)
Negrete, was born on March 12, 1922, in Walesburg, Colorado. At age 9, he moved
to Belmond with his family. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic
faith.
Joseph was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1942. He
served in the European Theater of Operation and the South Pacific on board
the U.S.S. Dorthea and the U.S.S. Betelgeuse. He drove amphibious landing
boats. He returned home in 1945.
Joseph married Mary Argumedo on February 26, 1949 in
West Des Moines. The couple made there home in Belmond. Joe was employed by
General Mills and Central Soya. He retired at age 59. Joe was an avid
gardener and liked mowing lawns. He attended seven Navy reunions starting in
February 1986.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers;
and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Belmond; three
sons, Frank of Clarion, Dennis and his wife, Beatrice of Belmond and David
and his wife, Kayla of Grimes; four grandchildren, Jesse and his wife,
Shawna, Jessica, Brennan, and Brock; two great-grandchildren, Kobe and Vada;
10 brothers and sisters, Jean Schwartz of Belmond, Jesus Negrete of
Belmond, Conie Swanson and her husband, Cecil of Des Moines, Mary Negrete
of San Francisco, Isabelle Negrete of San Diego, Nellie Fleming and her
husband, Marvin of Omaha, Nebraska, Simon Jr. and his wife, Rosie of Rocklin,
California, Ruth Matthews and her husband, Tom of Neptune, Florida, Stella Bougous and her husband, George of South Lyon, Michigan and Robert Negrete
of Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harold E. Bock
January 15, 2002
Harold E. Bock, 79, of Belmond, died on Friday, January 11, 2002, at
the Belmond Medical Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, January 14,
2002, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with Father David
Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis
Cemetery near Belmond. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Rowan
American Legion Post #159 and the Belmond Honor Guard.
Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist and Jon
Barrett, cantor. Ushers were Arthur Benetti, Duane Hess, Al Martin and Larry
Bailey. Honorary casket bearers were his True Value Coffee
Buddies. Casket bearers were, Rick Lage, Frank Harvey, Keith Harvey, Jim
Lage, Roger Harvey and Wayne Behrens.
Harold, the son of Carl and Minnie Kahl Bock, was born
on
December 3, 1922, in Remsen, Iowa. He grew up in the Remsen area where he
attended country schools and graduated from the Remsen-Union Consolidated School
in 1941. He attended the University of Iowa for two years before returning
home to farm.
Harold entered the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served on the U.S.S. Franklin Roosevelt where duties included patrolling the east and west
coasts of the United States during WW II. He returned home in 1946.
Harold married Mary Lage on June 14, 1949, at St.
Michaels in Kingsley, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Remsen and
Kingsley areas where Harold farmed. In 1960, the Bocks moved to Belmond
where he continued to farm. Harold eventually turned his farming operation
over to his boys, but never really retired.
Harold enjoyed traveling, family activities and family
campouts. He also loved to have coffee at True Value and tinkering on Allis
Chalmers tractors.
He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic
Church. He served his church in many capacities, most notably, Parish
Grounds Committee, Cemetery Trustee and in the Knights of Columbus. In the
last year, Harold was presented with the Lifetime Member Award from the
Knights of Columbus for 25 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father,
Frank Harvey; a son-in-law, Cecil Pruitt; one brother, Floyd Harvey; and one
sister, Avada Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; six daughters, Sandy Roetman and her husband, Wayne of Bethany, Missouri, Marilyn Bock of
Spencer, Marcia Naber and her husband, Bill of Fostoria, Jeanne Pruitt of
Bethany, Missouri, Patty Rouse and her husband, Tim of Ruthven and Sue Schavey
and her husband, Harlan of Blue Earth, Minnesota; four sons, Tom and his
wife, Cheryl of Belmond, Kenny and wife, Jacki of Belmond, Mark and his
wife, Denise of Belmond and Steve and his wife, Donna of West Des Moines;
twenty-two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Bierman of Tempe, Arizona; one brother, Dean Harvey and his wife, Sharon of
Marcus; a sister-in-law, Verna Harvey of Remsen; a brother-in-law, Ray Mills
of Center Point; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Jane Holtzbauer Svendsen

Jane Ellen Svendsen, 84, of Hampton, died at the Hampton Care Center on
Friday,
January 11, 2002.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 15, at
the St.
Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with burial in the St. Francis Catholic
Cemetery near Belmond. Father David Beckman officiated.
Jane Holtzbauer was born on August 9, 1917 in Belmond, the
daughter of Mathias Holtzbauer and Katherine Sullivan. She grew up in
Belmond and graduated from the Belmond High School and Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls.
On May 27, 1943, she married Harold Svendsen at
Riverside, California. She was a teacher in a country school in Williams and
a nurse's aide in Hampton.
Jane was a Legion Auxiliary member for 50 years and was
an active member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and
flowers, and embroidering,
Jane was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two
brothers; and one sister.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Charles
(Chuck) and Joni Svendsen of Hampton; daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and
Tom Kramer of Clarion, Kathye and Lou Gaines of Mason City and Barb and Rick Oudekerk of Hampton; seven grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren.

Rex F. Fetrow
January 23, 2002
Rex. F. Fetrow, 85, of Belmond, died on Monday, January 14, 2002, at the
Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minnesota.
Memorial services were held on Friday, January 18, 2002, at
the United Methodist Church in Belmond with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. A
private family burial took place prior to the service in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Rex Frazier Fetrow was born on a farm near Belmond on
February 25, 1916. He was the only child of Albert L. and Minnie Easton
Fetrow. He lived in the Belmond area his entire life except for four years
when he lived in Iowa Falls. He was a life long member of the United
Methodist Church.
Rex received his early education in country schools in
Iowa and Pleasant Townships. He attended high school in Belmond and
graduated with the class of 1933. His classmates continued a close
relationship and met monthly.
Rex worked at various jobs throughout his high school
years. When he was 20 he assumed the responsibility for the family farm.
On September 1, 1938, he married Marian E. Luckman from
Bowbells, North Dakota. To this union two children were born, James D. in
1939 and Diane C in 1943.
Besides farming, Rex spent many years as the farm
manager for Acco Seeds in Belmond. Rex enjoyed outdoor activities,
especially fishing and gardening. While he was recovering from radiation
treatment during the spring and summer of 2001, he enjoyed his last special
garden at the farm of Chuck and Ruth Wilmarth. The vegetables were shared
with friends at the Belmond Community Apartments.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Marian; and a granddaughter, Linda.
Rex is survived by two children, James and his wife,
Peggy of Traverse City, Michigan and Diane and her husband, Jon Closson of
Rochester, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Beth Fetrow, David and his wife,
Kelly Fetrow, Kay and husband, Guy Bush, Kim and husband, Fred Hale, Steve
and wife, Melanie Hansen and Mike and wife, Renee Hansen; three
great-grandchildren, Zachery Tannahill, Carter Hale and Benjamin Bush; and
special friend, Margaret Brady.

Jerry Jordan

J. P. "Jerry" Jordan, 79, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and formerly of
Mason City and Belmond, died on Wednesday, January 16, 2002, at the Albuquerque
Medical Center from cancer.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, January 19, at
the
St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque.
Interment will take place at a later date
in the Immanuel
Reformed Church Cemetery near Belmond.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lorraine (Wessels)
Jordan; one daughter; one grandson; four brothers; two sisters-in-law; and
nieces and nephews.

Andrew H. Lauen
January 23, 2002
Andrew H. Lauen, 90, of Garner, formerly of Meservey, died on Thursday,
January 17, 2002, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 19, at the
First Reformed Church of Meservey with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating.
Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Andrew H. Lauen was born on December 11, 1911, on the
family farm, rural Meservey, the son of Herman B. and Ida (Statlander) Lauen.
He attended country school and graduated from the Meservey High School in 1929.
He
attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He returned to the Meservey
area where he worked as a carpenter.
Andrew was united in marriage with Herma Vierkant
on
December 2, 1936, at the parsonage of the First Reformed Church of Meservey by
Rev. Kampman. The young couple moved to Sunnyvale, California, where he
worked as an auto mechanic. They returned to Iowa two years later and he
worked for United Motors in Marshalltown.
After a couple of years, they moved to a farmstead near
Meservey. While on the farm, Andrew built all the buildings that are on the
farm today. He also began to do plumbing and electric work, eventually
owning and operating Lauen Electric. He continued with the farming operation
and the electrical business until he was 85 years old. He has resided at the
Concord Care Center in Garner for the last two years.
Andrew was a member of the First Reformed Church in
Meservey. He served on the Meservey School Board, was a member of the Lions
Club, and was a Saddle Club member.
An active member of his community, Andrew received a
plaque recognizing many years of service to Meservey. Andrew enjoyed
fishing, swimming, ice skating, and other activities with his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers;
one sister; and a great-granddaughter.
Survivors are his wife of 65 years, Herma Lauen of
Garner; three children and their spouses, Dean and Mary Lauen of Clear Lake,
Dianne and Marv Josten of Garner, Robert and Sandy Lauen of Ventura; seven
grandchildren, JoDeane and Scott Hafermann of Goodell, Todd Lauen of
Meservey, Anne Lauen of Clear Lake and her fiance, Jeff Beck, Lynne and
Brian Bovenmeyer of Garwin, Eric and Staci Josten of Ankeny, Kim and Erik
Dorenkamp of Norwalk, Nicholas Lauen of Ventura; three great-grandchildren,
Lyndsay, Jeffrey and Samantha Hafermann; brother, Christopher Lauen of
Garner; sister-in-law, Edna Lauen of Belmond; and many nieces and nephews.

Ida Bessman Bock

Ida Mae Bock, 82, of Klemme, died on Friday, January 18, 2002, at the
Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
January 21, at the Immanuel Reformed
United Church of Christ in Klemme, with Pastor Donna Buckman officiating.
Music was provided by organist, Diane Stadtlander who accompanied soloist,
Lance Arnold.
Ushers were Richard Baack and Terry Woiwood. Casket bearers
were Andrew Jones, Eric Daniel, Mike Carlson, Justin Rule, Jay Duncan and
Verlyn Kaduce. Interment was in Ell Township Cemetery at Klemme.
Ida Mae Bessman, the daughter of William and Anna (Willig)
Bessman, was born on May 9, 1919, on a farm near Popejoy. She attended rural
school near Popejoy.
On February 3, 1942, she was united in marriage to
Mitchell John Bock at the United Church of Christ in Alden. They lived near
Klemme where they farmed and raised their family, retired from farming in
1981 and then moved to Klemme. In November of 2000, they moved to the
Westview Care Center in Britt.
She was an active member of the Immanuel Reformed United
Church of Christ where she belonged to the Women's Fellowship, Dorcas
Circle, and the Adult Fellowship. Ida Mae also taught Sunday School, Bible
School and was a 4-H Leader. She was honored at Governor Brandstad's Sixth
Annual Recognition Conference for her service at the Klemme Elementary
School, where for six years she volunteered time to help with the
kindergarten, first and second grades, as well as in the library. Ida Mae
enjoyed baking, cooking and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell, in
2001; and a grandson, Nathaniel Mitchell Rule.
Ida Mae is survived by her four children, son and
daughter-in-law, Jim and Barbara Bock of Fairmont, Minnesota, daughter and
son-in-law, Joyce and Dennis Lee of Dayton, Ohio, daughter and son-in-law,
Jo and Royle Duncan of Alden and daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Steven McBreen of Ames; eight grandchildren, Laura Bock-Carlson, Susan Bock,
Michelle Daniel, Anne Jones, Bethany and Jay Duncan and Justin and Blakely
Rule; two great-grandchildren, Eleanor Jones and Harper Daniel; a sister and
brother-in-law, Margaret and Ervin Meyer of Latimer; a brother, Harry Bessman of Iowa Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Halfpap Gabrielson

Dorothy M. Gabrielson, 69, of Belmond, died on Friday, January 18, 2002,
at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 21, at
the Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial
was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, accompanist and
Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Ushers were Loren Bamford and Francis Morris. Casket bearers were Tom Halfpap, John Hinman, Scott
Hinman, Kevin Kew, Jeff Gabrielson and Chris Ward.
Dorothy, the daughter of Alvin and Fannie Bruns Halfpap,
was born on January 26, 1932, in Pleasant Township. She grew up in the Belmond
area and attended country schools. Dorothy graduated from the Belmond High
School in 1949. She attended the La James Beauty School in Mason City and worked
as a beautician for several years.
Dorothy married Wilmer Gabrielson on June 26, 1949, at
the Immanuel Reformed Church. The couple made their home in Goodell before
moving to the farm near Belmond in 1970. Dorothy was employed as a
bookkeeper for We-3 before retiring due to ill health.
Dorothy was raised in the Immanuel Reformed Church and
was most recently a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a past member
of P.E.O. She enjoyed collecting antiques, traveling and golfing.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Wilmer; two sons, Joel
and wife, Kathy of Story City and Mick and wife, Nancy of Belmond; seven
grandchildren, Holly and husband, Tony, Jeff, Robyn, Stephanie, Sara, Chris
and Abby; two sisters, Imogene Hinman and husband, George, of Belmond and
Geraldine Halfpap of Des Moines; and a brother, Alvin Halfpap and wife,
Mary of Boone.

Kaye Jenison Petersen

Kaye Petersen, 61, died on Saturday, January 19, 2002, after a long battle with cancer.
Memorial services were held on Sunday, January 27 in Mesa, Arizona. Burial was
at Larkin Sunset Lawn.
Kaye was born on August 31, 1940 in Belmond, and was
the daughter of Delbert "Ole" and Virginia (Glasscock) Jenison. She lived in
Portland, Oregon, Sandy, Utah, and for the last 15 years in Scottsdale,
Arizona.
She enjoyed traveling and lived an active, fun-loving
life. Trips to Mexico, golfing and boating were among her favorite past
times.
Survivors include her husband, Leroy; daughters, Linda
and Debbie; grandsons, Ryan and Zachary; and brother, Mick and his wife,
Cheryl Jenison of Spray, Oregon.

Frances Baker Vestweber
January 23, 2002
Frances A. Vestweber, 98, of Belmond, died on Sunday, January 20, 2002, at the
Belmond Care Center. Services were held on Thursday, January 24, at the St. John Lutheran
Church in Belmond with burial in the Alexander Cemetery.
Frances Alberta was born on September 23, 1903 in Belmond,
the daughter of John and Otilla Farman Baker. She graduated from the Belmond
High School and received her "normal training" at the Iowa State
Teachers College, Cedar Falls.
She then taught school in Thornton.
She married William C. Vestweber, Jr. on June 4 1929 in
Duluth, Minnesota. They lived in Belmond, then farmed near Alexander, and
then retired to Belmond.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991;
daughter, Phyllis Oxley in 2000; five brothers, Glenn, Guy, Ralph, Max and
John; and two sisters, Blanche and Mabel.
Survivors include her daughter, Joye Ostendorf of Meservey;
son, Wayne and wife, Mariane Vestweber of McAllen, Texas; and ten
grandchildren.

Larry R. Wolf

Larry R. Wolf, 70, of Belmond died on Thursday, January 24, 2002.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 28, at
the Tenold-Andrews
Funeral Home in Belmond. Special music was provided by Larry's nephew, Doug
LaBrecque. Opening thoughts and scripture readings were given by Doug
Doughan and reflections given by granddaughter, Shana and a friend, Larry
Flanagan.
Honorary bearers were Bernard Black, Bill Brace, John Chrisman,
Dan Wireman, Larry Flanagan, Mark Allen and Doug Doughan. Following the
service a fellowship time was held at the Wolf home in Belmond. Interment
will be at Battle Creek, Michigan.
Larry was born on December 4, 1931. He had one sister, Mary Lou. Larry grew
up in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he excelled in baseball, soccer,
football, swimming, diving and bowling. Larry also coached Eaton softball
teams.
He collected golf balls, golf clubs and antique
medicine bottles. He was a member of the Belmond Country Club.
He chose Eaton Manufacturing as his life long career
and spent almost 50 years with the firm, some as a consultant.
His parents and sister preceded him in death, all as a
result of cancer.
Survivors include his three sons, Rick, Kirk and Marty;
and four grandchildren, Shana, Ryan, Stevi and Breana.

Scott Krabbe

Scott Clifford Krabbe, 39, of Latimer, died on Thursday, January 24, 2002, at
the
Franklin General Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 28, at
the
Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter, with Pastor Mary Peterson officiating.
Interment was in the St. Paul's Cemetery in Latimer.
Scott was born on November 23, 1962 in Hampton, the son of
Dean and Karen (Bobst) Krabbe. He was baptized and confirmed at the Nazareth
Lutheran Church in Coulter. Scott helped his father with farm work, worked
at Dudley's Corner and also worked for Century Machine in Coulter.
On September 25, 1982, Scott married Pam Borcherding.
They had three sons, Joshua Scott, Derrick Alan and Tyler James. Scott and
Pam were divorced in 1998.
Scott worked for Lawrence Hamilton, Dave Kenniger, Ed
Hopkey and North Central FS at Coulter, later he farmed with his
father-in-law, Wayne Borcherding. A stroke in 1995 caused Scott to retire
from farming.
Survivors are his sons, Joshua, Derrick and Tyler, of
Latimer; his father, Dean Krabbe of Dows; his mother and step-father, Karen
and Richard Hotchkiss of North Carolina; his brother, Larry Krabbe of Dows;
sisters, Kim Crafton of Rowan and Pam (Johnny) Davis of Rock Hill, South
Carolina; grandfather, James Krabbe of Latimer; grandmother, Verla Lundell
of Clarion; one nephew, Matthew Crafton of Rowan; and one niece, Felisha Davis
of Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Sarah C. Oberhauser

Sarah C. Oberhauser, 31, of West College Corner, Indiana, was killed
in an automobile accident on Saturday morning, January 26, 2002, near Oxford,
Ohio.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated
on Wednesday, January 30,
at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Somerset, Ohio with burial in the St.
Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorial services will be held in Oxford on Friday,
February 1, 2002.
Sarah C. Oberhauser was born on June 28, 1970 in Belmond,
the daughter of Paul W. and the late Jane Ann Hickman Oberhauser, who died
in 1971.
Sarah was a 1988 graduate of the Sheridan High School,
where she was all-state in track, cross country and basketball, and was
class valedictorian. She was a 1994 graduate of Miami University, received
her teaching certificate and began teaching science at Talawanda High school
in Oxford, Ohio. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in
Somerset.
She was preceded in death by her mother; maternal

Survivors are her father and step-mother, Paul and Sue Oberhauser of Somerset; children, Megan and Drew VanWinkle, at home; the
children's father, Kevin VanWinkle of West College Corner; four sisters, Amy
Oberhauser of Versailles, Kentucky, Janelle (Darrel) Finck of Thornville,
Ohio, Nancy (James) Walchanowicz of Olmsted Twp., Ohio and Elizabeth (Troy)
Severson of Belmond; four brothers, Paul B. Oberhauser of Massachusetts,
Roger (Crystal) Oberhauser of Utica, Ohio, Peter (Anna) Oberhauser of
Trimble, Ohio and David Oberhauser of Fayette, Arkansas; and a special
friend, Ted Maxwell of College Corner.

Everett J. Anderson

Everett J. Anderson, 85, of Belmond, died on Sunday, January 27, 2002,
at his home in Belmond.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 30, at
the St.
Olaf Lutheran Church near Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating.
Interment was in the St. Olaf Cemetery near Belmond.
Music was provided by Carol Severson, organist
and Steve
and Joleen Rolland, special music. Casket bearers were Ryan Schlichting,
David Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Jason Schlichting, Pat Eastman and Kyle
Anderson. Honorary casket bearers were Julie Brinzo, Angel Schlichting,
Heather Anderson, Lisa Eastman, Jill Hickson and Brittany Anderson. Ushers were
Alfred Johnson and Clifford Toft.
Everett, the son of Jess and Anna Cronan Anderson, was
born on January 11, 1917 near Livermore. He grew up in the Renwick area,
attended country schools and graduated as valedictorian from the Livermore High
school in 1934. He then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Everett was united in marriage to Juen A. Rasmussen on
December 23, 1939, in Eagle Grove. They made their home in West Bend, in
Hardy, and later at Harcourt, where Everett managed the grain elevator. In
1946, Everett and Juen moved to the Olaf area where he managed the Olaf
Elevator. Later they moved to Belmond where they lived the rest of their
lives.
Everett was an avid sports fan. He and Juen liked to
camp, camping in 49 states. Everett was very involved in the Boy Scouts,
receiving many awards including the Silver Beaver. He and Juen received the
Lamb Award.
Everett was a member of the St. Olaf Church, serving as
Sunday School Superintendent, church treasurer, usher and trustee. He was a
charter member of the board of the Belmond Community Apartments. Everett was
a life time member of the Masonic Lodge, and he and Juen were members of the
Eastern Star. Everett managed Congregate Meals for a number of years, and he
drove the Care Car. In 2001 he was presented the Outstanding Citizen Award
from the Belmond Jaycees.
Everett was preceded in death by his parents; his wife
in 1999; two children in infancy; two sisters; and four brothers.
He is survived by one daughter, Dixie Anderson Miller
of Belmond; three sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Sharon Anderson of
Lubbock, Texas, Dennis and Linda Anderson of South Kingstown, Rhode Island
and
Douglas and Laurie Anderson of Nevada, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Pint of Eagle Grove and Lois Sheets
and her husband, Johnny of Webster City; one brother, Merle Anderson of
Clarion; many nieces and nephews.

Rev. Dick L. Watkins

Rev. Dick L. Watkins, 71, of Iowa City, formerly of Belmond, died on
Tuesday,
January 29, at the Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a lengthy illnesses.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 2, at 11:00 a.m., at
the First United Methodist Church
in Iowa City, with Paul Akin and Bob Dean officiating. Visitation was on
Friday, February 1,
from 3-7:00 p.m., at the Gay and Ciha Funeral Home in Iowa City.
Dick Lee Watkins was born on September 4, 1930 in Cherokee, the son of Lew
S. and Edith Marple Lee Watkins. He graduated from the Storm Lake High School
and attended Buena Vista College. He graduated from Cornell College. Dick
served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He attended the
University of Dubuque Theological Seminary and graduated in 1961.
He married Marilyn Joy Wells on March 9, 1952. They served Methodist
Churches in Hopkinton, Ft. Dodge, Belmond, West Liberty, Marion, and Iowa
City. Marilyn died on June 27, 1994. Dick married former Belmond resident,
Linda Peters on May 27, 1995 in Iowa City. Over the years he served with the
United Methodist Men, Belmond Fire Department, West Liberty Ambulance
Service, and was a hospital volunteer in Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; and his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of Iowa City; daughters, Susan Dirks
(Tim) of Marion and Katherine Anderson (Roger) of Fairfield; son, Lewis of
Iowa City; step-sons, Terry Peters (Judy) of Tampa, Florida, Tim Peters
(Julie) of Seattle, and Troy Peters of Tipton; step-daughter, Tammy Negrete
(Robert) of Washington, Iowa; four grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren;
brothers, John (Fern) of Minot, North Dakota and James (Betty) of Sioux
City.
