Duane Nelson

Duane "Swede" Nelson, 72, died on
Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in
Los Angeles. He grew up in Belmond and lived on the
west coast most of his adult life.
He was preceded in
death by his wife, Jerry; parents, Marson and Verla
Nelson; and sister, Deloris.
Survivors include
his
sons, Kenneth and Randy (Gloria) Nelson; and nieces,
Susan (Jeff) Erickson and Pamela (Dennis) Wiemann.

Steven R. Pralle
July 12, 2005
Steven R. Pralle, 47, of Latimer, died on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Franklin
General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services will be held on
Friday, July 15, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Latimer, with Pastor Marvin Lorenz
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be
held on Thursday from 5-7:00 p.m., at St. Paul's
Lutheran and one hour prior to services at the church.
Steven Roy, son of
Roy William and Mary Ellen (Borcherding) Pralle, was
born on May 30, 1958 in Hampton. He graduated from the
CAL Community School in 1976.
He was confirmed
at St. Paul's in 1972 and was a life long member. He
served as head usher, a trustee, and was on the
finance committee. On December 28, 1985 he married
Sara Wolken at St. Paul's.
Steve worked in
construction and at the Coulter elevator. He then
started farming and raised his family. He was a member
of Farm Bureau and the Latimer Fire Department for 22
years, serving as chief for five years. He enjoyed
camping and spending time with his family and friends.
Steve always said "Pralle family fun day is Sunday not
Monday!"
He was preceded in
death by his grandparents; and sister, Laurie.
Steve is survived
by his wife; his parents; daughters, Leslie, Angela
and Michelle, all of Latimer; sisters, Nancy (Steve) Junge of Johnston, Susan (Dave) Hanson of Lamont,
Kathie McGinnis of Johnston, Rhonda (Gene) Yee of
Boyton Beach, Florida, Linda (Rob) Dietz of Dows and
Karen (Todd) Christensen of Urbandale.

Jerry W. Green
July 12, 2005
Jerry W. Green, 58, died on Monday, July 11, 2005, at his home in Davenport.
Funeral services
will be held on Thursday, July 14, at the First
Christian Church in Davenport. Burial will be at noon
on Friday in the Belmond Cemetery.
Jerry was born on
July 22, 1946 in Mason City, to Carl C. and Dorothy
(Mossman) Green. He was a graduate of the Belmond High
School and of the University of Northern Iowa. Jerry
married Janice Grabbe in October 2004 after being
together for 17 years.
He was preceded in
death by his parents.
Survivors include
his wife; and brother, Jon (Judy) Green of Nisswa,
Minnesota.

Hannah K. Koenen
July 20, 2005
Hannah K. Koenen, 77, formerly of Sheffield and Meservey, died
on Monday, July 11,
2005, at the Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville,
Tennessee.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 14, at the First
Reformed Church in Meservey, with interment in the
Meservey Cemetery.
Hannah Kathern, was
born on August 28, 1927 at Rowan, the daughter of Chris
and Anna (Freeks) Stadtlander. Her parents died when
she was young and she was raised by her aunts and
uncles. Hannah attended the Rockford Public Schools.
She married Herman W. Koenen on August 27, 1944 and
they farmed in the Meservey area until retiring to
Sheffield in 1974. She moved to Woodlawn, Tennessee in
1999.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; husband (1998); and brothers,
Bennie, John and Lambert Stadtlander.
Survivors include
her daughter, Marjorie (Max) Mitchell of Woodlawn,
Tennessee; sisters, Leona Floden of Texas, Minnie
Meints of Texas, Doris Koch of California, Annalein
Andrews of Webster City and Delores Bahnsen of
Rockford.

Raymond M. Clark
July 20, 2005
Raymond M. Clark, 89, died on Monday, July 11, 2005, at the Rockwell Community
Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 15, at the
Rockwell United Methodist Church, with Pastor Lewis
Bram of the First Baptist Church in Rockwell
presiding. Interment was in the Rockwell Cemetery.
Raymond Martin, was
born on August 12, 1915 at Webster City, the son of Mary
Claude and Bertrude Clark. When he was young he helped
his father on a large dairy farm at Iowa Falls. The
family moved to Svea, Minnesota where he worked on a
large dairy for the Norland Brothers. He later became
foreman of a crew that built silos in the surrounding
area.
Raymond accepted
the Lord when he was 15 years old and has been
faithful all his life. He was a Sunday School Teacher
for many years and filled the pulpit many times. As a
young man he came to Iowa and picked corn by hand and
met his future wife.
Raymond and
Frances were married on December 8, 1939. They bought
their farm in the Galt area, first having a dairy herd
and then went to beef cattle and turkeys. In 1973,
they sold their farm and moved to Pueblo West,
Colorado, where Raymond worked grading roads. In 1980
they moved to Rockwell where he maintained the Linn
Grove Park for several years. He entered the Rockwell
Community Nursing Home in 2000.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include
his wife; children, John (Pat) Schroder of Brainerd,
Minnesota, Elaine (Joe) Matykiewicz of Pueblo West,
Dennis (Marlys) Clark of Fertile, Virginia (Don)
Hulsing of Rockwell and Arland (Mary Margaret) Clark
of Spearfish, South Dakota; sister, Florence (Ken)
Kriens of Thornton; 16 grandchildren; and 25
great-grandchildren.

Dwight L. Barkema
July 20, 2005
Dwight L. Barkema, 56, of Belmond, died on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at the Belmond
Medical Center, following a two-year battle with colo-rectal cancer.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 19, at
the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Pastor
Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Meservey
Cemetery.
Dwight Lynn, the
son of Junior and Viola (Pals) Barkema, was born on
January 12, 1949 in Belmond. He was raised in the
Belmond-Meservey area and graduated from the Belmond
High School in 1968.
Dwight was
employed by Central Soya in Belmond from the time he
was eighteen until he became disabled two years ago.
He was a member of First Reformed in Meservey, where
he was baptized, confirmed and graduated from
catechism. He enjoyed spending time with his family,
especially his grandchildren, watching movies, and
helping out on the family farm.
He was preceded in
death by his father; and sister-in-law, Nancy Barkema.
Dwight is survived
by his children, Terisa (Robert) Schlueter and their
daughter, Ella of Des Moines, Suzanne (Chad)
Barkema-Cox and their children, Joshua, Megan and
Jacob of Prairie City and Richard Barkema and his son,
Devon; his mother of Belmond; brothers, Dean Barkema
of Mason City, David (Jeanne) Barkema of Belmond,
DuWayne (Dawn) Barkema of Cedar Falls, Douglas Barkema
of Belmond, Delwin (Dawn) Barkema of Belmond; and
sister, Darla (Tad) Gabrielson of Carroll.

Leo L. Schwab
July 27, 2005
Leo L. Schwab, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died on
Saturday, July 16, 2005, at his home following
a short illness.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday,
July 30, at 1:00 p.m., at the Teahen Funeral Home, by
Christine Wagner Hecht. Burial will be in the Ingham
Township Cemetery, Hansell, with military honors.
Leo LaVerne, was
born on June 3, 1924 in Hampton, the son of Ira and Ina Nisewander Schwab. He married Bernadine Aigley on
April 30, 1950. Leo served in the Army during the
Korean Conflict from 1949 to 1951. He was a farmer for
half of his life and then became a foreman at
Universal Gym Equipment for 23 years. Leo enjoyed
fishing, farming and gardening and was an accomplished
mechanic.
Leo was preceded
in death by his wife; and brothers, Clarence and Ray.
Survivors include
his
sons, Michael (Sonya) Schwab, Garry (Patricia) Schwab,
Tom and Allen Schwab; daughters, Berna (Larry)
Stockman, Bobbie Rayburn and Pattie Schwab; sister,
Phylis "Skip" Woodley; 29 grandchildren; and 22
great-grandchildren.

Edwin R. Pentico
July 27, 2005
Edwin Pentico, 81, of Bode, died on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at the Humboldt Care Center
North.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 23, at the
Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Bode, with Fr. Paul Eisele officiating. Burial was in the St. Olaf
Cemetery, Bode, with military rites.
Edwin Ray, the son
of Ray and Viva (Trickel) Pentico, was born on December
10, 1923 in Emmetsburg. He attended school there and
finished his education in Minnesota. He married
Theresa Latourelle on November 17, 1943.
Ed served in the
U.S. Army during WW II and saw action in Germany,
France and Belgium. Following his discharge in 1947,
Ed and Theresa lived in Minnesota, where he farmed for
a time and then continued his truck driving. They also
lived in Iowa and California until settling in Bode in
1966. After retiring from truck driving in 1982, Ed
became a bus driver for handicapped children in the
Bode area. Theresa died in 2002 and Ed continued to
live in their home until May of this year.
Ed enjoyed his
involvement with his children's baseball games, yard
work, woodworking and coffee time in downtown Bode.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; wife; brother, Carlyle; and
grandson, Christian Nelson.
Survivors include
his
children, James Pentico of Lexington Park, Maryland,
David Pentico of Bode, Debra (Dennis) Nelson of Bode,
Lynn Pentico of Norwalk, Jeff (Jodi) Pentico of
Belmond and Larry Pentico of Los Angeles, California;
grandchildren, Jennifer and Jamie Johnson, Dane Nelson
and Matthew, Nicholas and McKenna Pentico.

Mervin R. Barkema
August 2, 2005
Mervin R. Barkema, 85, of Klemme, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the
Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Friday,
July 29, at the Immanuel Reformed UCC Church in Klemme,
with the Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Burial was in
the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. The Andrews Funeral
Home of Klemme was in charge of the arrangements.
"Merv" was born
on
May 9, 1920 in rural Hancock County, the son of Hauko
and Grace (Liewen) Barkema. He attended school in the
Goodell area and served during World War II in the Air
Force, attaining the rank of sergeant. Following his
discharge he worked at the Klemme Creamery.
Mervin married
Irene L. Schmidt on June 22, 1949 at Immanuel
Reformed. The couple farmed southwest of town and
retired to Klemme in 1998. Mervin enjoyed farming and
watching the crops grow. He and Irene enjoyed spending
winters in Arizona.
He is survived by his
wife, Irene; brother, Harvey (Irene) Barkema of Forest
City; sisters, Marvel Stadtlander of Sheffield and
Jean Ostendorf of Klemme; two sisters-in-law,
Norene Barkema of Belmond and
Betty (Leland) Barkema and brother-in-law, Kurt
Ahlstrom of Belmond; also several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers,
Theodore, Leo and Leland.
