Henry Carolus
April 5, 2005
Henry Carolus, 91, died on
Friday, April 1, 2005, at the
Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 4,
at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Pastor
Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Henry, the son of
Albert and Dorothy Mussle Carolus, was born on November
9, 1913 in Klemme. He attended school in Klemme. On
April 5, 1935, Henry married Julane Osheim of
Thompson.
The family made
their home and farmed in the Galt, Clarion, Garner and
Goodell areas. Following retirement from farming, they
moved to an acreage north of Belmond. Henry was
employed at Winnebago Industries until 1979. He became
a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in 2000.
Henry enjoyed
spending time with his grandchildren, tending his
garden, fishing, and sitting in his swing on the
acreage watching the cars. He enjoyed playing cards
until the time of his death.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; and ten brothers and sisters.
He is survived by
his wife; sons, Jerry (Jean) Carolus of Hampton and
Del (Dorothy) Carolus of Waterloo; daughter, Diane
(Ron) Dougherty of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jerilyn Kapp
and Kole of Rockingham, North Carolina, Jaci Sinclair
and Mike of Marshalltown, Jay Carolus and Sheila of
Oskaloosa, Darin Carolus and Nancy of Reno, Nevada,
Colin Carolus and Jenny of Waterloo, Grant Carolus and
Holly of Waterloo, Jen Eddleman and Joel of West Des
Moines, Jill Sears and Todd of Overland Park, Kansas;
nineteen great-grandchildren; six
great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Esther
Carolus of Clarion.

Helen Johnson
April 5, 2005
Helen Johnson, 97, of Fort Dodge, died
on Sunday, April 3, 2005,
at the Bickford Cottage.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 6, at
the First Congregational, United Church of Christ, with
Rev. James Meadows officiating. Interment was in the
Belmond Cemetery.
Helen Serena Bork,
was born on July 28, 1907 in Morgan, Minnesota. She
graduated from high school and later received a
bachelors degree from Northwestern University. While
at Northwestern she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha
Sorority. She also received a teaching degree from
Iowa State Teachers College.
Helen taught
kindergarten for five years in Belmond. In 1936, she
married Theodore Johnson in Fort Dodge. He was a
teacher and superintendent at Belmond until 1947 when
they purchased the Falls Cafe at Granite Falls,
Minnesota.
In 1952, they moved back to Fort Dodge
where Helen and her two sisters were co-owners of a
dairy chemical company. Their husbands worked for them
with Stanley Beers as the sales manager and Theodore
was the production manager. In 1975, they sold the
business. In 1998 Helen and Theodore moved to the
Bickford Cottages. She was very active at Bickford
Cottages including a Bible study group.
Helen was a member
of the First Congregational, United Church of Christ,
the women's circle, P.E.O., and a charter member of
Tri T. She enjoyed gardening.
She was preceded
in death by her husband in 2000; an infant son; her
parents, Jesse and Emma (Hansen) Bork; and her
sisters, Gertrude Beers and Vivian Wolf.
Helen is survived
by her sons, William Johnson of Coralville and Winston
Johnson of Santa Rosa, California.

Larry Suntken
April 12, 2005
Lawrence (Larry) Suntken, died
on Tuesday, April 5, 2005.
A
memorial service was held on Friday, April 8, at the First
United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. Burial
was in the Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver.
Larry was born on
October 14, 1939 in Belmond, to Harm and Ruth Suntken.
He served as a
medic in the Army from 1957 to 1959 and was a
commercial realtor in Colorado Springs for over 30
years. He was named the Pikes Peak Region's "Trader of
the Year" three times. He was an avid trap shooter,
hunter and fisherman.
Friends and family
loved him for who he was, a giving man with a
wonderful wit and a knack for telling jokes.
Larry was preceded
in death by his father and mother; and a niece, Tia Brunstein.
Survivors include
his wife of 43 years, Janet; children, Laurie (Joe)
Anderson of Colorado Springs, Roxanne (Bob) Buchenberger of Littleton and Joey (Anne) Suntken of
Morristown, New Jersey; grandchildren, Christopher,
Nicholas, Zachary, Cameron, Nora and Claire; brothers,
Fred and Lloyd Suntken; and sisters, Bonnie Brunstein
and Rosalie Hartwig.

Anna Conners
April 19, 2006
Anna Conners, 94, formerly of Klemme, died
on Tuesday, April
12, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, April 15, at the Immanuel Reformed United
Church of Christ in Klemme, with Rev. Donna Buckman
officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery,
Klemme.
Anna Trampel, was
born on July 14, 1910, to Peter and Jennie (Schaa) Trampel
of Kamrar. She married Arthur Conners on December 4,
1943, at the Immanuel Reformed Church. They made their
home in the Klemme area.
For many years
Anna did housekeeping throughout the area in Britt,
Garner and Clear Lake. She was known for hard work and
meticulous attention to detail. Anna's church life was
very important to her. She enjoyed times spent with
her family and friends. In earlier years she was a
faithful member of the "Jolly Workers Club".
Anna loved to
raise flowers and was an excellent gardener. She loved
animals, especially her dog "Muffy". She will be
remembered for being conservative in nature, concise
in her beliefs, and very caring.
Anna became a
resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in December
of 2002, where she enjoyed playing bingo and visiting
with others, especially her friend, Enid.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; husband; infant brother,
Melbourne; brothers, John and Harmon Trampel; and
sister, Wemkie Cavitt.
Survivors include
her brother, Clarence (Ruth) Trampel of Klemme; and
sister-in-law, Eula Trampel of Belmond.

Avon D. Armour
April 19, 2005
Avon D. Armour, 81, died on
Friday, April 15, 2005, at the
Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were
held on Tuesday, April 19, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment
was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Music was
presented by Eldoris Bunnell, organist and Marilyn
Janssen, soloist. Casket bearers were Kyle Braun,
Jesse Armour, Jeff Williamson, Chad Armour, Matt
Armour and Mark Armour. Ushers were Al Charlson and
Larry Beyer.
Avon, the daughter
of Bernold and Neva (Oler) Kinseth, was born on April 30,
1923, in Iowa Township in Wright County. She graduated
from the Alexander High School in 1941.
Avon and Ronald Armour were married in 1941. She was employed by
Kinseth Plumbing and Heating for over 30 years. Avon
enjoyed golf, reading, baking, and was devoted to her
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She
was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Avon was preceded
in death by her parents; husband in 1957; sons,
Robert, Mike and Terry; brother, Kenny Kinseth; and
sister, Ardith Buchanan.
Avon is survived
by her daughter, Deb (Fred) Burnham of Belmond;
granddaughters, Jessica (Jeff) Williamson of Belmond,
April (Noah) Wolter of Belmond and Jodi (Kyle) Braun of
Belmond; grandsons, Matt (Sue) Armour of Mason City,
Chad (Angie) Armour of Belmond, Mark (Jen) Armour of
Belmond and Jesse Armour of Des Moines; sister, Maxine
Dorr of Belmond; brothers, Roger Kinseth, Roland
(Marian) Kinseth and Larry (Shari) Kinseth, all of
Belmond; and ten great-grandchildren.

Esther Polmateer
April 19, 2005
Esther (Swenson) Polmateer, died
on Sunday, April 17, 2005, at
the Boone Hospital Center in Missouri.
Funeral services were
held on April 20 at the Richland Baptist Church in
Fulton, Missouri.
Esther Ruth, was
born on March 25, 1919 in Belmond, to Peter and "Emma" Amoline (Nelson) Swenson. On January 1, 1937, she
married George H. Polmateer. Esther and her family
lived on a farm near Belmond until moving to a farm in
the McCredie, Missouri area (later Kingdom City) in
1952.
She was preceded
in death by one sister; and five brothers.
Survivors include
her
children, Barbara (Don) Tafuni, Gwen Workman, Mitchell
(Kathryn) Polmateer, Linda (Ed) Hickman, Lyle (Nancy)
Polmateer and Beverly Hayes; 16 grandchildren; 23
great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Helen M. Nelson
April 27, 2006
Helen Mary Nelson, 90, a life long resident of Belmond,
died on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on April 23 at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Belmond, with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating.
Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Music was provided
by Eldoris Bunnell, organist and Marilyn Janssen,
soloist. Ushers were Al Olson and Al Charlson.
Casket bearers were Bill Thompson, Tracy Thompson, Bob
Whipple, Rob Whipple, Rick Whipple, Wade Johnson,
Bradley Johnson, Eric Downing and Jason Moore.
Helen Johnson was
born on May 18, 1914 in Belmond, the daughter of William
and Mary (Hunst) Johnson. She attended the Belmond
Schools.
Helen married
Richard A. Thompson on May 18, 1935 at Mason City, and
assumed the responsibility of raising Richard's six
children. She later married James I. Nelson on July
31, 1952 at Silver Bow County, Montana.
For most of her
life, Helen was employed as a cook and dietician. She
worked for various restaurants and at the Belmond
Community Hospital. Helen retired from the hospital in
1976 after 23 years. Her culinary skills and baking
abilities were not only masterful in her professional
life, but they were also shared with her family and
friends, who remember her meals for various gatherings, delicious baked rolls, buns, cakes, and other
treats.
Helen was people
orientated and looked forward to family gatherings and
get-togethers with friends and neighbors. She loved
children and the opportunity to play games and read to
them. She rarely missed the opportunity to remember
her family and grandchildren with cards, gifts, and
calls on special occasions. In her later years it
wasn't uncommon to find Helen in the middle of a
battle of spoons or other games with her
grandchildren.
She was active at
the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Esther Circle. She
was a long time member of the VFW and American Legion
Auxiliaries, the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary, RSVP,
Senior Citizens, and the Grandmother's Club.
She became a
resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in October
2002. Prior to that she resided at the Community
Apartments for 26 years.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; husbands; sons, William, Don
and Roger; daughter, Anita Whipple; brothers, Maurice,
Earl and William; sister, Lillian; a granddaughter; a
grandson; son-in-law, Gerald Whipple; and
daughter-in-law, Dorothy Thompson.
Survivors include
sons, Duan (Linda) Thompson of Belmond and Jack
(Marlys) Thompson of Mesa, Arizona; brother, Henry
(Betty) Johnson of Sedona, Arizona; daughters-in-law,
Ruth Thompson of West Palm Beach and Betty Thompson of
Belmond; sister-in-law, Doris Nelson of Earlham.
Also she is
survived by her grandchildren, Robert (Lois) Whipple of
Belmond, Dennis (Linda) Whipple of West Jordan, Utah,
Kathy (Joe) Moore of Plymouth, William (Cheryl)
Thompson of Mason City, Sandi (Ron) Schlichting of
Clear Lake, Debra (Chris) Jelik of Mason City, Kyle
(Wendy) Thompson of Rockford, Mindy (James) Mahoney of
Mason City, Donna Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Deborah
Manita of Wheaton, Illinois, Roy (Rosemary) Thompson

Richard D. Christensen, 68, of Edwardsburg, Michigan, died
on Thursday,
April 21, 2005, as a result of a motorcycle/deer
accident.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 25, at the
Community Baptist Church in Edwardsburg, with Pastor
Thaddeus Stout officiating.
Richard was born on
June 8, 1936 in Belmond, the son of George and Mabel
(Reed) Christensen. He grew up on the family farm.
Richard married
Alice J. Koppernagel on July 8, 1956 in Belmond. He
spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the
U. S. and Japan. They moved to Edwardsburg in 1960
where he was employed by the Adlake and Miles
Laboratory, retiring in 1999.
He was a member of
the Community Baptist Church and the Lighthouse
Keepers. He enjoyed fishing, bike riding, motorcycle
riding and gardening.
Preceding him in
death were his father; brother, Lloyd; sister,
Shirley; and mother-in-law, Betty Lepper.
Survivors are his
wife, Alice; daughters, Julie (Eryn) Quinn of Grand
Rapids, Michigan, Susan (Scott) Teter of Cassopolis,
Michigan and Dawn (Derek) Frederickson of Ft. Wayne,
Indiana; son, Mark (Dee) Christensen of Sydney,
Australia; grandchildren, Makenzie and Joshua Quinn
and Ashli, Austin and Zachary Teter; mother, Mabel
Christensen of Britt; sisters, Velma (Louis) Yender
and Marlys (Larry) Ridley, all of Bella Vista,
Arkansas; and brothers, Robert (Caroline) Christensen
and Ray Christensen, all of Britt.

Henry O. Johnson
April 27, 2005
Henry O. "Hank" Johnson, 94,
of Belmond, died on Friday, April 22, 2005,
at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
April 25, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church,
with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit
presiding. Interment was in the church cemetery near
Belmond.
Organist was
Maxine Whitty. Soloists were Todd McConville and
Dominique Eells Bockman. Ushers were Mike McLaughlin
and Hubert Kopriva. Honorary casket bearers were Gerald
McNulty, Frank Quigley, Doug Thompsen, Jim Swenson,
Edgar Janson, Rick Hawley, Jim Gealow, Brian Johnson,
Allen Stegman, Lew Eells and Mike McConville.
Casket bearers were Hank's grandchildren.
Henry, the son of
Samuel and Mary Halvorson Johnson, was born on November
18, 1910 in Belmond. He was baptized and confirmed at
the St. Olaf Lutheran Church near Belmond. In high
school, Hank served as president of his senior class,
captain of the football team for two years, and
captain of the basketball team for one year. Hank was
the captain of the first North Iowa All Conference
Football Team in 1929. His decision to take care of
his mother prevented him from accepting a football
scholarship to Upper Iowa University. After high
school he worked in the sugar beet fields and at Tomco
Seeds in Belmond. He also managed the state liquor
store before entering the service.
Henry married
Gertrude Marie Quigley on December 8, 1937 in Belmond,
where they made their home. On April 12, 1944 Henry
entered the U.S. Army as an artillery gun crewman. He
served in the European Theater during World War II and
was a member of the 76th Infantry, which came to the
support of Patton's 3rd Army. He returned home in
October 1945.
Henry began
working for McGuire Clothing in Belmond, which was
later purchased by Dutch Thompsen. For thirty-two
years Hank worked there, managing the store in his
later years. He retired in 1978.
A lover of the
outdoors, Henry spent a lot of time hunting and
fishing. He also liked gardening and reading. Sports
were very important to Hank, especially the Hawkeyes.
Hank's children remember him only loving his family
more than being outdoors.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; wife; and brothers and sisters,
William, Helen, Olga, Sofie, Magdalene, Theodore, Paul
and Leonard.
Henry is survived
by his daughters, Maryellen Oberhauser of Belmond, Jean
(Michael) McConville of Des Moines and Bette (Lew)
Eells of Cedar Rapids; sons, Sam (Vicki) Johnson of
Badger, Ray Johnson and fiancée, Teresa and her
daughter, Katie of Belmond and Len (Jan) Johnson of
Bucyrus, Kansas; 13 grandchildren and 9
great-grandchildren, Greg and Kim Oberhauser and their
son, Garrett; Gretchen and Allen Stegman, Todd, Susan,
Michelle, Jeff and Doug McConville; Spencer and Kris
Eells and their children, Carson, Jenna and Jackson;
Craig and Kelly Eells and their son, Parker; Dominique
and Mike Bockman and their children, Nicholas and
Patrick; Ned and Jessica Johnson and their children,
Jordan and Cooper; Erin Johnson and Alex Johnson.

Linda Pratt
May 4, 2005
Linda Kay Pratt, 43, of Cedar Falls, died
on Tuesday, April 26,
2005, at the Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo, after a
long fight with breast cancer.
Funeral services were held on Friday,
April 29, at the St. Patrick Catholic Church, with
interment in the Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar
Falls.
Linda was born on
December 11, 1961 in Waterloo, the daughter of Donald
and Rita (Palmersheim) Rosauer. She was a 1980
graduate of the Gilbertville-Don Bosco High School and
received her BA in elementary education from the
University of Northern Iowa in 1984.
She married James
Pratt on December 29, 1984 at the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. Linda was
an elementary school teacher in Belmond for five years
and taught fourth grade at Lincoln Elementary School
in Cedar Falls for fourteen years.
Linda was preceded
in death by her father-in-law, William Pratt.
Survivors include
her husband; children, Maria, Emily and Christopher at
home; her parents; brothers, Dennis (Helene) Rosauer
of Urbandale, Gary (Janice) Rosauer of Gilbertville,
Steven Rosauer of Washburn, Robert (Coleene) Rosauer
of Ft. Myers, Florida and Larry (Vanessa) Rosauer of
Waterloo; sisters, Julie (Joe) Frost of Gilbertville,
Patti (Randy) Ragsdale of Reinbeck, Teresa (Brent)
Buszka of Iowa City, Annette Weber of Urbandale and
Angie (Stan) Hemesath of Waterloo; and mother-in-law,
Roberta Pratt of Waterloo.

Richard D. Finn
May 4, 2005
Richard Dale Finn, 83, of Austin, Minnesota, died
on Friday,
April 29, 2005, at the St. Mary's Hospital in
Rochester. He was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in
January 1949. He had been on kidney dialysis for over
three years.
A memorial Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, May 3,
at the Church of St. Edward in Austin, with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Interment was in the Fort Snelling
National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Richard was born on
September 10, 1921 in Belmond, the son of James and
Ida (Jacobs) Finn. He graduated from the Belmond High
School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps
during World War II.
Richard married
Earlene VanBuskirk at the St. Francis Church in
Belmond on January 31, 1948. They farmed in Iowa for
six years before moving to Dexter in 1954 where they
farmed for eighteen years. They moved to Austin in
1972. Richard was the postmaster in Dexter for 25
years. He was also a member of the American Legion
Post #91 and V.F.W. Post #1216 in Austin. Earlene
taught elementary school in Austin for 27 years.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; brothers, Frances, Howard,
Merlin, Clair and Orland; and sister, Lenore Deml.
Richard is
survived by his wife; daughters, Betty Kalmes of
Winona and Mary Finn of West Des Moines;
grandchildren, Patrick (Kelly) Kalmes of West Bend,
Wisconsin and Leanne and Paul Kalmes of Winona;
brother, Roger (Mary) Finn of Boise, Idaho; sister,
Peggy Halverson of Belmond; and two sisters-in-law.

Clarence Trampel

Clarence Richard Trampel, 82, a life long resident
of Klemme, died on Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Belmond Health
Care Center, where he had been a resident since
December.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 4, at the Immanuel
Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with Rev.
Donna Buckman officiating. Burial was in the Ell
Township Cemetery, Klemme.
Organist was
Lynette Nuehring and soloist was Lance Arnold. Casket
bearers were his grandchildren.
Clarence was born on
September 22, 1922 at Kamrar, the son of Peter and
Jennie (Schaa) Trampel. He moved with his family at a
young age to a farm near Klemme. He graduated from the
8th grade at the Avery Township School.
He married Ruth Haes on April 24, 1943 at the Immanuel Reformed
Church. They made their home on the Trampel farm which
has been in the family for more than a century.
Clarence farmed
and raised horses. He raised many different breeds
over the years and had numerous teams of mules. On
special occasions he would hitch up the teams for
trail rides. The last several years Clarence was the
number-one spectator at any of the events or practices
at the Trampel Arena south of Klemme. Despite the fact
that he wasn't always feeling his best, he looked
forward to going for a ride nearly every day. Clarence
rarely missed an opportunity to go to a horse sale. He
enjoyed touring the countryside in his surrey, a
family heirloom that had belonged to his parents.
Clarence enjoyed
times spent with his family and friends. A special
memory was a family bus trip to Texas during Christmas
2003. He also enjoyed the company and companionship of
his dogs. He was a long time member of the Immanuel
Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; daughter, Beverly Korleski;
infant brother, Melbourne; brothers, Harmen and John;
sisters, Wemkie Cavett and Anna Conners (April 12,
2005); and sons-in-law, Bob Korleski and Greg Nelson.
Survivors include
his wife; daughter, Joanne (Gerald) Vander Wolde of
New Braunfels, Texas; son, Richard (Diane) Trampel of
Klemme; daughter, Dixie (Larry) Treinen of Klemme; and
son, Terry (Tracy) Trampel of Klemme; grandchildren,
Jeffrey Vander Wolde, Travis Trampel, Dusty (Jessica)
Korleski, Brian (Elisa) Nelson, Jason Korleski,
Bradley Nelson, Kody Trampel, Kasey Trampel, Tammy
Callahan, Misty Vander Wolde, Angie Trampel, Amy
Nelson, Alyssa Treinen, Sara Treinen, Tanner Hartema
and Austin Hartema; and great-grandchildren, Treyton
and Tairyn Daniels and Lane and Drew Nelson.
