Ramona J. Peller
November 16, 2005
Ramona Jean Peller, 47, of Mesa, Arizona, died
on
Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at the Hospice of the
Valley in Mesa.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 7, 2005,
with interment in the Mariposa Gardens Cemetery.
Ramona was born on
February 8, 1958 in Belmond, to Richard and Florence Norby Thompson. She graduated from the Kanawha High
School in 1976. She attended UNI and graduated from
the Allen School of Nursing in Waterloo in 1981. She
moved to Arizona in 1982 and married Mark Peller in
August 1991.
She is survived by
her husband; daughters, Danielle and Rachel; brother,
Doug (Barb) Thompson of Kanawha; sisters, Connie
(Craig) Watne of Belmond and Kris (Dave) Mehmen of
West Des Moines; father and mother-in-law of Illinois;
and a sister-in-law and husband in Arizona.

Alvin E. Boelman
November 8, 2005
Alvin Eldon Boelman, 72, of Mason City, died on Saturday,
November 5, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, after a long bout with cancer.
Funeral services were held
on Wednesday morning, November 9, 2005, at the Trinity
Lutheran Church in Mason City, with Rev. Samuel
Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment was in the
Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by the
Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Alvin was born on
February 4, 1933 in Meservey, the son of Henry and
Jennie (Pals) Boelman. He grew up on the family farm
and graduated from the Meservey High School in 1950.
He was employed by Central Telephone until he joined
the U.S. Army. Al served from 1953 to 1955 in Korea.
Following his discharge, he joined Northwestern Bell
as a cable splicer. He retired in 1986 as an outside
plant engineer with U.S. West, but contracted back to
U.S. West for nine years following his retirement.
Al married
Jeannette (Jan) Dahl on December 22, 1956 at Baldwin,
Wisconsin. Following retirement they enjoyed a trip to
Norway and a cruise to the Caribbean. After wintering
in Arizona, Florida and Texas, they settled down the
past fifteen winters in Palm Desert, California. Al
was an avid golfer, enjoyed attending tournaments, and
played almost daily. He was an active member of the
Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on various
boards and was a captain of ushers.
He was preceded in
death by his parents.
Al is survived by
his wife; daughters, Kristin (Norman) Stradleigh of
Phoenix, Arizona and Mary (Fred) Oien of Boone;
grandchildren, John Morris Oien of Brookings, South
Dakota and Mary Ruth Oien at Iowa State University;
brothers, Norman (Julane) Boelman of Meservey and
Dennis (Miriam) Boelman of Belmond.

Alice E. Flanagan
November 8, 2005
Alice Flanagan, 86, died on Sunday, November 6, 2005, at
the Mercy Hospice in Johnston following an extended
illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, at
10:30 a.m., on Thursday, November 10, with burial in
the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond.
The family will
greet friends on Wednesday evening, from 5-7:00 p.m., at
the Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home.
Alice Elizabeth,
was born in Britt on October 10, 1919, the daughter of
Roman and Virgie (Brubaker) Buterbaugh. She graduated
from the Alexander High School in 1936. Alice married
Neil V. Flanagan in 1938. In 1942 the family moved to
Belmond, where Alice lived until 1998 when she moved
to Karrington Cottages in Waterloo, and later to the
Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston.
Alice assisted
Neil in the real estate and insurance business in
Belmond, from 1946 until his death. Then she assisted
her son, Larry in the same business for over 30 years,
serving as secretary, bookkeeper and licensed
insurance sales representative. Alice was a widow for
many years, but never seemed lonely as she had many
good friends and enjoyed her children and
grandchildren.
Alice enjoyed
bridge and 500 with her lady friends and special
occasions with her children and grandchildren, playing
Michigan Rummy. She was a member of the St. Francis
Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America,
and the St. Francis Rosary Society.
Alice was preceded
in death by her husband; her parents; sister, Lois;
and brother, Lloyd.
Alice is survived
by her son, Larry (Nancy) Flanagan of Grimes; daughter,
Mary Janice (DeWayne) Tobias of Benicia, California;
son, Alan (Colleen) Flanagan of Cedar Rapids; and son,
Robert (Janis) Flanagan of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren;
22 great-grandchildren; brother, George (Lucille) Buterbaugh; and sister-in-law, Lina Buterbaugh.

Merlin J. Ackerson
November 16, 2005
Merlin J. Ackerson, 73, died on Friday, November 11,
2005, at his home in Keokuk.
Funeral services were held on
November 15, 2005, at the Trinity United Methodist
Church in Keokuk.
Rev. Ackerson was
born on May 18, 1932 in Fairmont, Minnesota. He
graduated from the Humboldt High School, Cornell
College, and the Garrett-Evangelical Theological
Seminary. He was ordained in 1958 and served many
Methodist churches including Rowan, Alexander, Lake
Mills, Thompson and Mason City First. He was a
District Superintendent in Spencer.
He is survived by
his wife, Helen; son, James (Mary Boyd) Ackerson; and
daughters, Katherine (Steve) Gabel and Rebecca (James)
Bowden all of Keokuk.

Gretchen F. Arends
November 16, 2005
Gretchen Arends, 30, of Aurora, Colorado, died in an
auto accident on Friday, November 11, 2005.
A memorial
service will be held on Friday, November 18, 2005, at
the Woodmen Valley Stone Chapel in Colorado Springs.
Gretchen Faye, the
daughter of John and Judy Arends, was born on December 3,
1974 in Mankato. A resident of Colorado Springs since
1984, she attended the Air Academy Grade School and
graduated from the Rampart High School in 1992.
Gretchen was a
loan officer in the mortgage lending industry most of
her adult life, starting her career before age 23, and
recently with Pulte Mortgage in Denver. She
consistently received excellent customer service
recognition from those she served. She enjoyed family
Christmases, reading, composing pencil sketches,
camping, time at the ocean, and collecting ceramic
turtles.
She was preceded
in death by her paternal grandparents, Henry and
Marian Arends.
Gretchen is
survived by her beloved daughter, Sierra Jamie who now
resides with her grandparents, John and Judy Arends of
Colorado Springs. Also surviving are maternal great
grandparents, Lawrence and Ramona Schrader of Easton,
Minnesota; and sisters, Heather Arends (Kunce) and
Tiffany Arends. Local relatives include uncle, Dale
(Trese) Arends and aunt, Lynne (Lee) Aldrich.

Donovan L. Peil
November 16, 2005
Donovan Louis Peil, 67, of Belmond, died on Saturday,
November 12, 2005, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 16, 2005, at
the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with the Rev.
Ray Salemink officiating. Burial was in the Alexander
Cemetery.
Donovan Louis, son
of Ben and Alice Peters Peil, was born on July 20, 1938,
on a farm near Alexander. As a teenager he helped his
father and mother on the farm. Don graduated from the
Alexander High School in 1956. He attended Ellsworth
College, graduating in 1958.
Don joined the
National Guard and worked at the Latimer Bank for one
year before enlisting in the Army. He met his first
wife, Nancy in Chicago where he was stationed. Don and
Nancy married on December 30, 1960 in LaPorte County,
Indiana. They had three children.
The couple lived
in Indiana for a few years, moving back to the family
farm in 1966. Nancy died in 1984. Don married Judy Fjetland in 1985. They were divorced in 1996. Don
remained on the farm until he moved to Belmond in 1997
for health reasons.
Don enjoyed
working on computers, watching war movies and
gardening. His family was the most important part of
his life.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; and his first wife.
Survivors include
his daughter, Julie George (Bo) McBride of Athens,
Alabama; twin sons, Scot (Jennifer) Peil of Ankeny and
Darren (Ciana) Peil of Alexander; grandchildren,
James, Delany, Robert and Grace; and friend, Judy Peil
of Alexander.

Norma L. Early
November 29, 2005
Norma L. Early, of Rockwell and formerly of the
Goodell and Klemme areas, died on Thursday, November 24,
2005, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, November 28, at the Andrews
Funeral Home in Klemme. Burial was in the Ell Township
Cemetery.
Norma was born on
July 26, 1931, to Sylvia (Larson) and Alex (Boots)
Early. She graduated from the Klemme High School and
later attended Hamilton Business College in Mason
City.
She was a lifelong
homemaker and worked for many years at Curries
Manufacturing in Mason City, where she had moved to be
with her mother following her father's death in 1950.
Norma had been a resident of the nursing home for the
past four and one-half years.
She was preceded
in death by her parents.
Norma is survived
by cousins and friends.

Sergeant
Gregory L. Tull
December 6, 2005
Sergeant
Gregory L. Tull, 20, of Pocahontas, died on Friday, November 25,
2005, near Hit, Iraq, while on military maneuvers.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at
the Faith Lutheran Church near Palmer, with burial in
the Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt. Military rites
were conducted by the Iowa National Guard.
Gregory LeRoy, the
son of Gary and Eileen Tull, was born on December 28,
1984, in Phoenix, Arizona. In the second grade the
family moved to Pocahontas. He was active in
basketball, football and baseball. He worked after
school at the local pharmacy and helped his father
install carpet.
During his junior
year of high school he enlisted in the 1st Battalion,
194th Field Artillery, Iowa Army National Guard, at
Storm Lake and was qualified as a Forward Observer. He
graduated from the Pocahontas High School in 2003 and
attended South Dakota State University, where he was
studying to become a Nurse Anesthetist.
During his
sophomore year of college he volunteered for Operation
Iraqi Freedom. He loved being a soldier and was proud
to wear the uniform. He attained the rank of sergeant.
He died when insurgent forces detonated an improvised
explosive device near the armored humvee in which he
was a gunner. He was scheduled to return home this
month.
Survivors include
his parents and brother, Bryan all of Pocahontas;
grandparents, Gorden and Nena Tull of Sun City,
Arizona (formerly of Belmond), Erland and Phyllis
Nelson of Humboldt and Bill and Janet Velau of Garner;
aunts and uncles, Jerry (Vici) Fowler, Mike (Rosie)
Tull, Sue (Scott) Hayungs, Roger (Tia) Tull, Christine
(Lonnie) Schmidt, Marlene Velau and Sam Velau; and
cousins, Lea (Mark) Reinert, Adam Schmidt, Tonya and
Tiffany Fowler, Ben and Eric Tull, Matt and Nick
Pentico, Grant Mickelson and Vesta and Ross Tull.

Bethany Hanson
November 29, 2005
Bethany Ann Hanson, of Clarion and formerly of
Goodell, died on Saturday, November 26, 2005, of injuries
received in an auto accident.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday morning, November 30, at the Belmond United
Methodist Church, with Pastor Pat Kennedy officiating.
Burial was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.
Bethany Ann, was
born on June 2, 1984 in Des Moines, the daughter of Duane
and Cynthia Wiarda Hanson. While at the Des Moines
North High School she was involved in ROTC, competing
in the military drill and marksman teams. She also
played softball, volleyball, basketball and soccer.
Bethany moved to
Goodell in 2000, attending the Belmond-Klemme High
School. She attended Girl's State in 2001 and
participated in job shadowing with Linn Larson of the
Belmond Police Department. She graduated in 2002 and
then attended DMACC and NIACC, becoming a certified
nurse's assistant.
Bethany worked at
the Wright Medical Center, North Central Human
Services, and Opportunity Village.
She spent her
vacations on the farm near Goodell with Grandma
Florence, Aunt Janet, and Uncle Randy, and cousins,
Christina and Austin.
Bethany recently
became engaged to Darren Robinson of Clarion, where she
made her home with daughter, Haylee. She enjoyed
fishing at the gravel pit on the family farm,
scrapbooking, Tai Kwando, and surfing at Pismo Beach.
She was a member of the Goodell American Legion
Auxiliary, Belmond VFW, and the Belmond Evangelical
Free Church.
Bethany is
survived by her father, Duane (Jean) Hanson of
Goodell; her mother, Cynthia Betts of Des Moines; her
fiancée, Darren Robinson; brothers, Benjamin (Danielle)
Hanson of Eagle Grove, Barrin (Kelly) Hanson of Key
West, Florida and Barrick Hanson of Webster City;
maternal grandparents, Irving and Lolaraye Wiarda of
Dows; aunts and uncles, Lorene (Bryan) Arends of
Hampton, Sue (Glenn) English of Mason City, Lori (Rob)
Wiarda of Manly, Lavonne (Merle) Hines of Rushville,
Indiana and Janet (Randy) Lich of Belmond; nephews,
Presten and James; and niece, Crissy.
She was preceded
in death by her fraternal grandparents, Merlin and
Florence Hanson.

Haylee Hanson

Haylee Evaline Hanson, age four months, daughter of
Bethany Ann Hanson of Clarion, died on Saturday, November
26, 2005, as a result of injuries received in an auto
accident.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning,
November 30, at the Belmond United Methodist Church,
with Pastor Pat Kennedy officiating. Burial was in the
Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.
Haylee Evaline
Hanson, was born on July 30, 2005 in Clarion. She lived
and was loved by her mother, her mother's fiancé,
Darren Robinson and the entire family. Haylee was
affectionately referred to as "Scoobie Pie".
Haylee is survived
by her grandfather, Duane (Jean) Hanson of Goodell;
her grandmother, Cynthia Betts of Des Moines; Darren
Robinson of Clarion; uncles and aunts, Benjamin
(Danielle) Hanson of Eagle Grove, Barrin (Kelly)
Hanson of Key West, Florida and Barrick Hanson of
Webster City; maternal great-grandparents, Irving and
Lolaraye Wiarda of Dows; great aunts and uncles,
Lorene (Bryan) Arends of Hampton, Sue (Glenn) English
of Mason City, Lori (Rob) Wiarda of Manly, Lavonne
(Merle) Hines of Rushville, Indiana and Janet (Randy)
Lich of Belmond; and cousins, Presten, James and
Crissy.
She was preceded

Louise M. Loth
November 29, 2005
Louise May Loth, 94, of Belmond, died on Sunday, November
27, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, November 30,
at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Rev.
Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Louise was born on
November 17, 1911, to Charles and Mary (Pabbeldt) Haupt
southeast of Belmond, on the farm which had been
homesteaded by her grandfather, August Haupt in 1875.
She graduated from the Belmond High School and then
went to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
She was a member of Kappa Alpha Beta. She taught
grades 1-8 in a one-room school near Kanawha.
She met Louis Loth
at a dance in 1936. Both were quick to say that it was
"love at first sight" and they were inseparable for 66
years. As newlyweds they worked as farm hands for Nels
Anderson near Clear Lake in order to save money for
the machinery they would need. Beginning in 1940 they
farmed the land where she was born. The family loved
to listen to stories of early farm life. One of her
proudest moments was when the home place was named a
Century Farm in August 1995.
After retiring in
1967, Louie and Louise went on numerous fishing trips
to Minnesota and Canada and wintered for many years in
Florida. They moved into town in 1992.
Louise loved
playing hearts, fishing, shopping, gardening, reading,
and especially mowing the lawn. She had a life long
passion for horses. Her ultimate joy in later years
was spending time with her family.
Preceding her in
death were her husband; daughter, Mary Lou
Robbins-Wells; her parents; and brothers, Irving and
Claire Haupt.
Survivors include
her
daughter, Karen Rasmussen of Des Moines;
grandchildren, Rodney (Nikki) Rasmussen of Des Moines,
Robbie (Callie) Rasmussen of Des Moines, LuJeanne
(Ron) Fink of Belmond, Jolene Robbins of Belmond,
Bradley (Georgia) Robbins of Forest City and Brian
(Glenda) Robbins of Clear Lake; and
great-grandchildren, Loren and Amanda Robbins, Sara,
Tiffany and Bob Fink, Sammy Robbins and Tyler
Bersetti.
