Madonna F. McNulty

Madonna Fae McNulty, 87, died on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at the
Belmond Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
held on Tuesday, December 6, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic
Church in Belmond, with Father Chris Podhajsky
officiating. Interment was in the St. Francis Catholic
Cemetery near Belmond.
Assisting with the
services were organist Maxine Whitty, cantor Cyndy
McNulty, lector Jim Houser, eucharistic ministers
Marcia McNulty, Monica Gribben and Maureen Dockstader,
altar servers Tanner and Ryan Gribben, ushers Frank
Quigley and Nancy Beenken and gift bearers were
Donna's great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Padraic Rowe, Rory Rowe, Kelly Rowe and Jane Hausman.
Casket bearers were Maureen Dockstader, Monica
Gribben, Mitchell McNulty, Kate McNulty, Michael
McNulty, Matthew McNulty, Megan Zwanziger and Lisa
Rehwaldt-Alexander.
Madonna Fae Hofer,
was born on September 18, 1918 in Ventura. Her family
moved to California for two years, returned to the
Ventura/Clear Lake area, and then moved to Goodell.
Donna excelled in softball and academics and graduated
with honors from the Goodell High School. She attended
Mt. Mercy College, the University of Iowa, and
completed her degree in English at Drake University.
Donna married
Gerald W. McNulty on May 6, 1939. They lived in
Belmond before moving to their farm north of town. She
taught school at St. John's in Clarion and later
remedial reading in Belmond.
Donna respected
and loved animals and the seasons, laughed hard,
worked hard, enjoyed cooking, playing bridge, and she
loved her family.
Donna was an
active member of the DAR, Catholic Daughters of the
Americas, St. Elizabeth's Study Club, St. Francis
Rosary Society and St. Francis Parish.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, Ralph and Nilla (Jasperson)
Hofer; brother, Ronald Hofer; and an infant sister.
She is survived by
her husband; her children, Thomas (Diane) McNulty of
Zimmerman, Minnesota, Mark (Marcia) McNulty of Clear
Lake, Dennis of Belmond, Shannon McNulty of Santa Fe,
New Mexico, Edward McNulty of Minneapolis and
daughter-in-law, Cyndy McNulty of Belmond;
grandchildren, Maureen (Scott) Dockstader, Michael
(Lisa) McNulty, Monica (Jeffrey) Gribben, Matthew
(Theresa) McNulty, Mitchell (Melissa) McNulty, Meagen
(Adam) Zwanziger, Kate McNulty and Lisa (Jeremy)
Rehwaldt-Alexander; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Terry E. Lassahn
December 6, 2005
Terry E. Lassahn, 61, died of cancer on Saturday,
December 3, 2005, at his home in rural Hancock County,
with his wife, Naomi at his side.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, December 6, at the Klemme United Methodist Church,
with Reverend Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial was in
the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme, with full military
honors.
Terry Eugene, was
born on November 27, 1944 in Mason City, the son of
Harold Paul and Mable Viola (Schlichting) Lassahn. He
grew up in Klemme and graduated from the Klemme High
School in 1962. He joined the military in 1964 and
served for three years and eleven months. His tenure
included time in Okinawa. Following his service he
attended the North Iowa Area Community College and
received an Associate Degree in Engineering and was a
member of the honor society.
Terry was then
employed at Bell Labs in Naperville, Illinois, where he
held various positions. Bell Labs is where he met his
wife, and they were married on January 5, 1980 at
Naperville. Later they moved to Winfield, Illinois. He
retired after 25 years with the company.
They returned to
Terry's Iowa roots, settling on their acreage in Avery
Township in the Meservey-Klemme area. Terry loved to
spend time in the outdoors, planting a large and weed
free garden. He was an excellent cook, loved to plant
trees, was a master woodworker, and liked traveling
the area visiting friends, having coffee at the Klemme
Lumber Yard, the Sawmill Restaurant, and attending
American Legion activities. Terry attended both the
Klemme United Methodist Church and more recently the
Goodell United Methodist Church. He and Naomi enjoyed
the companionship of their cats, Willy and Tao. He was
a member of the American Legion Post 0625.
He was preceded in
death by his father; and sister, Joyce.
Survivors include
his wife of Meservey; his mother, a resident of a care
center in Idaho; brother, Gordon (Pamela) Lassahn of
Idaho Falls; and brothers-in-law, Robert Schlagel of
Kingman, Arizona and Clive (Carmen) Grey of Claremont,
California.

Donald E. Abbas
December 20, 2005
Donald E. Abbas, 80, of
Kanawha, died on Saturday, December 10, 2005, at the
Wright Medical Center in Clarion.
Funeral services were held
on Wednesday, December 14, at the Kanawha Christian
Reformed Church, with Pastor Steve Schulz officiating.
Interment was in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery near
Kanawha.
Donald, the son of
Fred and Grace Folkerts Abbas, was born on August 15,
1925 in rural Kanawha. He graduated from the Kanawha
High School in 1943 and then helped his father on the
family farm.
Donald married
Eleanor Ruka on April 10, 1948 in Goodell. They made
their home in the Kanawha, Britt and Corwith areas.
Upon retirement they moved from the Corwith farm into
Kanawha. Eleanor died in 1998.
Donald loved
spending time with his children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He enjoyed bowling, listening to
male gospel quartets and traveling.
In 1999 he married
Leona Carlson Freerksen in Jenison, Michigan and they
lived in Kanawha. Leona died this past May.
Donald was an
active member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed
Church. He served on the church council as deacon and
elder, and was a member of the Men's Society.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; step-mother, Maude; his wives;
and brother, Jerry.
Donald is survived
by his daughter, Lois Ann (Glen) Mouw of Sioux Center;
son, Darl (Paula) Abbas of Kanawha; step-children,
Arlene (Larry) Goemaat of Lakewood, California and
Richard (Ruth) Freerksen of Grand Rapids, Michigan;
five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; fourteen
step-great-grandchildren; sister, Audrey (Norman) Mehl
of Britt; and brother, Dennis (Jean) Abbas of
Marshalltown.

Doris A. Hill
December 20, 2005
Doris A. Hill, 73, of Alexander, died on Saturday,
December 17, 2005, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, December 20, at the United
Methodist Church in Alexander, with Pastor Tony Hershey
officiating. Burial was in the Alexander Cemetery.
Organist was Carol Richards and soloists were Marlo
Westaby and Marvin Draper. Ushers were Dallas Card and
Marvin Draper.
Casket bearers were
Ken Clark, David Hill, Mike Weitenhagen, Bob Kruger,
Lowell Franzen and Vince McDermott. Honorary bearers
were Charles Kruger, William Beenen, Fred Trager,
Dallas Shear, and Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Kew.
Doris was born on
April 2, 1932, the daughter of H.J. and Martha Schutt
Mourlam of Woolstock. She attended country schools
until the family moved to Belmond in 1947. She
graduated from the Belmond High School in 1951.
Doris married W.
Harry Hill on June 24, 1951. Following his military
service they returned to the Alexander area and farmed
until his retirement in 1995.
Doris enjoyed
being a homemaker and a grandmother. She was active in
community organizations and was a member of the
Alexander Methodist Church, serving on many
committees.
Doris was preceded
in death by her parents; brothers, Raynard, Donald and
Harvey; sisters, Gladys, Francis and Mayme; and
grandson, Ben Perry.
She is survived by
her husband; daughters, Debra (Duane) Perry of
Belmond, Suzanne (John) Messick of Ardmore, Oklahoma
and Carla Roberts of Garner; son Craig (Deb) Hill of
Alexander; grandchildren, Shawn (Michelle) Hill of Des
Moines, Amanda (Dan) Teske of Iowa Falls, Emily (Rob)
Lamfers-Hill of Belmond, Hannah Messick of Ardmore and
Nicholas and Harrison Roberts of Garner; and
great-grandchildren, Shayla and James Teske, Colin
Hill and Andrew Lamfers-Hill; sisters, Irene Sarber
and Jo Lowenberg, both of Mt. Vernon.

Larry D. Lauen

Larry Dean Lauen, 67, of Goodell, died on Wednesday, December 21, 2005,
at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, December 27, at the Goodell United Methodist
Church, with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial was
in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.
Larry was born on
March 20, 1938, on the family farm near Goodell, the
son of John and Mabel (Prilipp) Lauen. He was baptized
and confirmed at the Meservey United Methodist Church
and graduated from the Meservey High School in 1956.
Larry married Jane
Butcher on June 30, 1963, at the Meservey United
Methodist Church. He was active in the community,
volunteering as an EMT in the Meservey and Thornton
areas. He taught Sunday School at the Meservey UMC,
enjoyed working in his shop and attending gospel
concerts. His favorite hobby was farming, having lived
his entire life on the family farm.
Larry was an
active member of the Goodell United Methodist Church,
serving on the SPRC committee. He was also an MYF Leader, 4-H
Leader, and a past President of the Klemme
Elevator.
He was preceded in
death by his parents.
Larry is survived
by his wife; son, Steven (Dorcee) Lauen of Sioux City;
daughter, Lynnette (Mark) Wang of Taichung, Taiwan;
granddaughter, Natalie Wang; and brother, Richard
(Carol) Lauen of Searcy, Arkansas.

Everett N. Nelson
December 27, 2005
Everett Nickolie Nelson, 86, of Perham, Minnesota, died
on
Thursday, December
22, 2005, at the Perham Memorial Nursing Home.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, December 27, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in
Perham, with Reverend Paul Anderson officiating. Burial
was in the Grove Lake Cemetery, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.
Everett was born on
August 24, 1919, to Nickolie and Helen Emelia
(Oscarson) Nelson in Belmond. He was baptized and
confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He graduated
from the Belmond High School and attended the Lutheran
Bible Institute in St. Paul for one year. He graduated
from Waldorf College, St. Olaf College, and Luther
Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1945.
Everett married
Clara Lauretta Haugrud on August 30, 1942, at the Grove
Lake Lutheran Church in rural Pelican Rapids. He
served congregations in Ephraim, Wisconsin, Seneca, Illinois,
Wessington Springs, South Dakota, Kenyon, Minnesota and Roland, Iowa.
After retirement in 1984, he and Clara moved to the
Perham-Dent areas where he served as interim pastor at
many churches. He entered the Perham Nursing Home in
August 2002.
Everett was
preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Pearl and
Ruth.
He is survived by
his wife; sons, Jonathan (Jill) of Marquette, Michigan and
Paul (Kathy) of Mason City; daughters, Sharon (Daryl) Haarstick of Vergas, Minnesota and Mary (Dave) Thoresen of
Lake Wales, Florida; grandchildren, Stephanie (Brian)
Zumbolo, Matthew (Kenza) Nelson, Kristin Nelson,
Kimberly (Christopher) Simmons, Jeff, Mark and Thomas
Haarstick and Priya, Shristi and Jonathan Thoresen;
three great-grandchildren; brothers, Norris Nelson of
Fergus Falls, Clifford (Elnor) Nelson of St. Cloud, Minnesota
and Reuben (Ellie) Nelson of Belmond; sisters, Mildred
Meyer of Toledo, Ohio and Esther (Roy) Larson of Pelican
Rapids, Minnesota.

Albert E. Olson
January 3, 2006
Albert (Al) E. Olson, 82, of Belmond, long time
educator, coach, and school administrator, died on
Thursday, December 29, 2005, at the Belmond Medical
Center Hospice Unit.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, January 2, 2006, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church, with Reverend Rod Hopp
officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by
the Belmond Honor Guard, was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Albert Elias, was born on August 25, 1923 in Jewell, the son of Albert and
Jennie (Gabrielson) Olson. He was baptized and
confirmed in the Bethesda Lutheran Church and
graduated from the Jewell High School in 1941. He
served in the United States Navy during WW II,
spending much of his tenure aboard the USS Biloxi in
the South Pacific. Al married Bette Ann Schmedika in
Des Moines on August 27, 1949.
Following their marriage, Al continued his education at Drake University
and graduated in 1951. He spent a period of time in
private business in Jewell and then accepted an offer
to teach, coach, and be principal in 1956 at the
Alexander High School. The school consolidated to form
CAL, with Al remaining for the first year of
transition. He earned his Masters in Education
Administration from Colorado State College in 1963 and
took the position of Junior High Principal in Belmond
for seven years. He completed a specialist's degree in
secondary education from Iowa State University in
1972. Al served as Superintendent of the Belmond
Community School District for 17 years, retiring in
June 1987.
Al's life at Trinity Lutheran Church was very important to him. He
fulfilled many roles, including teaching 8th grade
Sunday School for 15 years and serving two terms as
Church Council President. In the community, he enjoyed
delivering Meals-on-Wheels and driving the Belmond
Care Car. He was a member of the Belmond Lions, the
Grid Iron Club, and the Iowa Association of School
Administrators. Al served on the Belmond Library Board
for 17 years. He was awarded the Administrator's Award
from the Iowa High School Athletic Association in
1988, Boss of the Year from the Jaycee's in 1982,
Honorary B-Club Award for being an outstanding BHS
sports fan and supporter, and the Friend of Education
Award in 1987 from the Belmond Education Association.
Children in general, and his grandchildren in particular, were very
special to Al. If there was a baby in the crowd, it
would be held by him. Al and Bette celebrated their
50th Wedding Anniversary with a surprise trip to
Norway, a gift from their children.
Al enjoyed sports of all kinds. He participated in baseball and
basketball throughout high school and continued to
play competitive basketball until he was over 30. He
was never on a losing team. He attended the Drake
Relays as a spectator for over 40 years.
Al had a life long passion for education and helping others better
themselves. He enjoyed his educational career and many
times mentioned the respect and admiration he had for
the people he had worked with, a mutual admiration
mentioned in return by many people who knew him as not
only their boss, but as their friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marguerite Folkerts and
Delores Thorson; and brother, Clifton Olson.
Survivors include his wife; children, spouses and grandchildren, Norm and
Carmi Olson of Nevada, Camron, Malinda and Kalli;
Annette and Bob Pasquariello of Olympia, Washington,
Jason, Jeffrey and Daniel; Jody and Todd Philipp of
Solon, Payton and Presley; sisters, Dorothy (Johnny)
Valen of Story City and Joan Hanks of Buffalo, New
York; and sister-in-law, Jane Olson of Nevada.
