DECORAH - A Mass of Christian Burial for Frances E. Vrba was held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. David M. Beckman officiating. Marlene Pecinovsky accompanied Miriam Humpal as cantor. Eucharistic ministers were Roberta Swestka, Bill Berka, and Eugene Novak. Pallbearers were: Gary Swestka, Bill Berka, Bob Moudry, Ken Haskovec, Kris Haskovec, and Ron Praska. Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin, IA.

Frances, 91, died after a short illness on Friday, October 3, 2008 at Wellington Place in Decorah, IA where she has made her home since February of 2006.
Frances Elizabeth Haskovec was born August 9, 1917 in Howard County near Maple Leaf, IA, the daughter of Joseph F. and Emma (Praska) Haskovec. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in New Hampton and also finished elementary school at her home in Howard No. 2 township. She graduated from Elma High School.
On May 1, 1944, she married William J. Vrba at the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma and they farmed together in Howard and New Oregon townships in Howard County. To this union, three children were born: Donald, Dale, and Mary. Her husband William (Bill) passed away on December 14, 2005.
Frances enjoyed gardening when she was younger, along with working outdoors and helping on the farm. Frances enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, she also enjoyed embroidery and sewing as her hobbies. Frances was a member of Holy Trinity Church where she was an honorary member of the Rosary Society.
Survivors include her children: Don W. Vrba (Glenda) of rural Cresco, Dale W. (Rhonda) Vrba of Cresco, and Mary (Ron) Novak of rural Calmar; several grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband: William (Bill); her parents; and one sister: Leona Komarek.
CRESCO - Funeral services for James "Jim" L. Shields of Cresco, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2008 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Thursday, October 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 6 p.m. Parish Vigil. Visitation continued for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

James, 90, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco, IA.
James Leonard Shields was born May 16, 1918, on the family farm in Howard County, near Lime Springs, IA, the son of James and Mary Alice (Weightman) Shields. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, IA, where he was a life-long member.
On December 29, 1941, he married Vivian Farnsworth in the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, IA. To this union, four children were born: Leonard, Eugene, Robert, and Jeanette.
Jim farmed for the first part of his life, then started doing plumbing. He worked for Oscar Schacht, then John Gosch for many years until back and hip surgeries forced him to retire.
He enjoyed gardening and walking outdoors with his dog. He spent most of his life on the farm, then moved into Cresco on November 22, 2001. In the last few years, he has resided at Howard Residential Care Facility, in rural Cresco, until July 14, 2008, when he moved to Evans Memorial Home.
Jim is survived by his wife: Vivian of Cresco; three sons: Leonard, and his wife, Connie, of Wheat Ridge, CO; Eugene, and his wife, Alice of Columbia, MD; and Robert, and his wife, Kate, of Littleton, CO; one daughter: Jeanette, and her husband, Elson Byler of Hills, IA; 13 grand children: Terry Andersen, Jeff, Sam, JR, and Matt Shields, Janine Dethloff, Gino and Erik Shields, Rob and Melissa Shields, Pat Hill, Sean and Justin Byler; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters: Frances Pease, Katherine Sherman, Lucy Thompson Wheeler, Agnes Kucher, Rachel Harvey, Mary Alice Gabrielson, and Margaret Anderlik; and two brothers: Edward and Dennis Shields.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco, IA handled the arrangements. Mary, 83, died Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco. Mary Terese Anderson was born August 12, 1925 in Orleans Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Ole H. and Anna R. (McCabe) Anderson. She attended rural school near her home and then graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco. She attended Luther College in Decorah and received her teaching certificate. Terese returned to the Orleans School and taught for two years, then worked as a substitute teacher at Assumption School. She went to work at the Hospital in Cresco as a nurse's aide, where she met George and married. She continued to work at the hospital for 20 years after their marriage as a ward clerk. On April 23, 1951, she married George Vachta at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. They became the parents of three children, Linda and twins, Don and Tom. They lived in Cresco all their 57 years of marriage. Terese belonged to Notre Dame Parish, Notre Dame Circles of Faith, the Hospital Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She liked to decorate cakes and to camp and travel. They took trips throughout Canada and the United States, also making a trip to Germany. She loved to spend her time caring for and sharing and laughing with her grandchildren. Terese belonged to a Bible study group for many years, and Terese and George led a marriage encounter group for young couples for several years. She is survived by her husband, George of Cresco; one daughter: Linda and her husband, Ken Hemesath of Waucoma, IA; one son: Tom, and his wife, Mary Ellen (Stevenson) of Cresco; four grandchildren: Lonnie Langreck of Rochester, MN, Dr. Laura Langreck of Rice Lake, WI, Tyler, and his wife, Jessi LeClear Vachta of Cresco, IA, and Brian Vachta of Cresco, IA; and one great-grandson: Lincoln Langreck. Terese was preceded in death by a son: Don on August 7, 1975; her parents; six brothers: Garnet, Orville, Francis, Clarence, Gregory, and Leo Anderson; and four sisters: Gertrude Bigalk, Agnes Beckman, Lucille Carolan, and an infant sister, Paulene.

Leo, 88, died Monday, October 20, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. Leo Nicholas Kolbet was born July 30, 1920 in Alta Vista, IA the son of John and Caroline (Glaser) Kolbet. He attended school at St. Williams School in Alta Vista. Leo farmed until he entered the Army Air Corp in 1942. He served in the European theater during World War II attached to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Stationed in London, England. He was discharged on October 15, 1944. Upon his return to Iowa he farmed in the Alta Vista area. On February 16, 1949 he married Millie Vachta at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. Leo and Millie farmed for 50 years in the Elma and Alta Vista area. He retired to Elma in 1991. Leo enjoyed driving for the Mennonite community, playing cards, golf outings, Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye Football. Leo was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma, Catholic Order of Foresters, Farm Bureau and a life member of the Alta Vista VFW Post 4069. Leo is survived by his wife Millie of Elma, IA; five children: Pat (Roger) Palmersheim of New Hartford, IA, Sandy (Al) Tunis of Kansas City, MO, Deb (Dan) Sturm of Cedar Falls, IA, Garry (Donna) Kolbet of Waverly, IA, Jon Kolbet of Portland, OR; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lois (Jack) McAvoy of Elma, IA, Lola (Bill) Boss of Charles City, IA; sister-in-law: Donna Kolbet of Osage, IA; several nieces and nephews; and many Mennonite friends. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson: Jackson Llewellyn; his parents; four brothers: Leonard, Luvern, Louis and Linus; and a sister: Luella Phippen.

Donald, 82, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Palm Garden Nursing Home in Winterhaven, FL from Parkinson's disease. Donald Herman Wohlsdorf was born January 28, 1926 the son of Herman and Mary (Pierce) Wohlsdorf. He graduated from Cresco High School. He enlisted in the Air Force in December 1943 and served to June 1946. He worked as a lineman for REC in Cresco for 20 years. Donald is survived by three children: Jean (Dave) Doda of Cresco, IA, Julie (Tom) Benson of Postville, IA and David (Susan) Wohlsdorf of Ames, IA; 10 grandchildren: and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Ruth Wohlsdorf, Clara Hornberger, and Arlene Hosek; and one brother: Alan Wohlsdorf.

Clara O'Neill was born September 2, 1924 the daughter of Clem and Ida (Willenborg) Recker on the family farm near Alta Vista. She attended St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista. Clara helped on the family farm. On October 16, 1945 she married Joseph O'Neill at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista. After their marriage they farmed west of Alta Vista until 1950 when they moved to their farm east of Elma. She enjoyed time with family and friends, playing cards, watching the Cubs, Vikings and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Clara was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Alta Vista VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the OEO Club. Clara is survived by four children: Kathy (Tim) Kuennen of Iowa Falls, IA; Betty Jo (Bill) Gibbs of Cedar Rapids, IA; Michael (Margie) O'Neill of New Hampton and Patrick (Kim) O'Neill of Fredericksburg, IA; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four brothers: Al (Madonna) Recker of Alta Vista; Ed Recker of Alta Vista; Leonard Recker of Alta Vista and Joe (Margaret) Recker of New Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. Eugene Daley was born May 8, 1919, on the family farm, in Winneshiek County, north east of Cresco. He was the son of John and Genevieve (McCabe) Daley. Gene was educated at the Cold Water rural school one and one-half miles from the farm. on February 16, 1942 he married Dolores Gossman at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Bluffton, IA. To this union, one son was born. He farmed all of his life in Winneshiek and Howard Counties. He still liked to go to the farm and help out after retirement. Gene was a member of the Farm Bureau. When relaxing, Gene liked to watch sports on TV. He especially enjoyed watching football and baseball. Gene is survived by his son: Robert, and his wife, Janet, of Cresco; one granddaughter: Brittany Daley; four step grandchildren: Shawn, Bryce, Kim and Shane Gunhus; seven step great-grandchildren: Alexandria, Julian, Spencer, Kylee, Riley, Jarrad, and Hannah; one brother: Gerald, and his wife, Marie, of Charles City, IA; one sister: Charlene Conrad of Waterloo, IA; sisters-in-law: Katie Daley of Waterloo, Sadie Wilhelm of Harmony, MN, Evelyn Bohr of Cresco, IA, and Loretta, and her husband, Harlan Henry of Decorah, IA. Robert was born June 26, 1933 in Ridgeway, IA, the son of James and Marie (Blackburn) Soukup. Robert married Victorian Burka and they later divorced. He then married Judith Fay Eden on August 10, 1968 in Rock Island, IL. Robert was a sheet metal worker for 40 years. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Sheet Metal Union # 263. He was a mason and member of the Mizpah and Kingston Masonic Lodges. He enjoyed NASCAR, working crosswords puzzles and playing solitaire. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Judith; his children: Marie Blackburn (James) of Washington, EJ Soukup (Catherine) of Cedar Rapids, Cory Soukup (Darcy) of Phoenix, AZ, Barry Soukup (Sheri) of Marion, Grayson Soukup (Tamara) of Las Vegas, NV, Sarine Soukup of Cedar Rapids, Kristian Soukup (Lisa) of Dublin, OH, friend, Deb Soukup of Phoenix, AZ; a brother: Jerome Soukup of Moline, IL; a sister: Catherine Kaderabek of California; a sister-in-law: Bette Soukup of Hiawatha; 13 grandchildren; a soon to be grandchild; two step grandchildren; a step great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Lowell, 78, died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. Lowell Halweg was born September 11, 1930 in Cresco, the son of Emil and Pearl Halweg. Lowell was a 1948 graduate of Harmony High School. He was a local farmer until the late 1980s when he returned to Cresco. Lowell will best be remembered for his love of fishing and hunting, his tall tales and his sense of humor. Lowell is survived by his son: Chris (Gretchen Feulner) of Raleigh, NC; his brother: Paul (Naomi) of Burr Oak; and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Melvin B. Wilhelm of Mesa, AZ will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, IA. Melvin, 82, died Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Dobson House Hospice in Chandler, AZ. Melvin was born November 4, 1925 in Cresco, IA the son of Bert and Mary (Jestrab) Wilhelm. He was a student of life. He served in the Army during WWII; He was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne and was honorably discharged in 1947. On May 11, 1947 he married Jeanette S. Thompson in Cresco, IA. Mel and Jeanette went on to own and operate numerous businesses, from restaurants to bars and fast food establishments, in Iowa and Minnesota. They also remodeled numerous houses. They retired in 1989. Mel was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed remodeling houses, history and current events. He and Jeanette had numerous motor homes and travel trailers and spent most winters in Arizona. His passion in life was cars. He and his life long friend Mel (#1) Borseth traveled to many car auctions over the years. They "always" got the best buys. Mel is survived by his wife of 61 years Jeanette of Mesa, AZ; one daughter: LeAnne (Ralph) Moore Jr. of Peoria, AZ; four sons: Dennis Wilhelm of Des Moines, Dale ( Rosemary) Wilhelm of Iowa City, Rodney (Susan) Wilhelm of La Crescent, MN, and Mike ( Mary Jo) Wilhelm of Cresco; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: Virgil; his sister: Virginia (Dolly); brother-in-law: Marvin Blomgren of Lime Springs; his nephew: Wayne; his brother-in-law: Melvin Thompson; and two grandchildren: Jared and Louise Wilhelm, children of Rodney Wilhelm and (Renda Sacquitne of Decorah).
