Nathanial Malli

Funeral services for Nathanial Malli were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the Assumption Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Pallbearers were: Tom LaBeff, Matt Munkel, Justin Johnson, Nick Munkel, Joshua Malli, and Derrick Chapman. Honorary pallbearers were his sisters: Amy, Amanda, Emily, and MaryEllen Malli. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Nathanial Allan Malli was born September 24, 1980 in Iowa City. His parents are David and Kathy Malli and Andrea and David Sauceda. As a boy, he attended Fillmore Central School in Harmony, MN and due to the fact that the parents traveled alot in the service, he graduated from Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD. Following graduation from high school, he attended Ann Arundel Community College.

In September of 1999 he married Meghan Sheperd in Annapolis, MD.

Nathanial entered the United States Air Force in January of 2000 and following boot camp, was stationed at Eielson AFB in Fairbanks, AK.

He is survived by his wife Meghan of Crofton, MD; one daughter: Mackenzie Rylee of Crofton, MD; his parents: David and Kathy Malli of Granger, MN and Andrea and David Sauceda of Lewes, DE; his grandparents: Roger and Monica Malli of Cresco and Joseph and Janet Eisenhauer of Sumner, WA, and Phyllis Segel of Tucson, AZ; one brother: Jesse Scott of Dallas, TX; five sisters: Amy A. Malli of Lewes, DE, Amanda L. Malli of Falls Church, VA, Emily D., MaryEllen M. and Mylissa J Malli, all of Granger, MN; one step brother: David Sauceda II of Austin, TX.

Nathanial was preceded in death by his grandmother: Arlys Ruffridge Malli.


Amy Joan Theis

Funeral services for Amy Joan Theis of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. The Rev. Bob Ament officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joan, 64, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Amy Joan Theis was born October 23, 1936 in Osage, the daughter of Leonard and Charlotte Lottie (Crum) Theis. She attended Riceville schools and after graduation furthered her education at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids where she received her degree. She worked in Cedar Rapids following college. After her mother fell she returned to Riceville to assist her mother. She was a retired school teacher and provided home care for the elderly in the Riceville and surrounding area.

She is survived by one brother: Robert of Riceville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.


Mathias "Matt" Palmersheim

Funeral services for Mathias “Matt” Palmersheim of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma. Matt’s wife and children placed the pall. Pallbearers were: his son’s: Robert, Kenneth, Francis, Patrick, and Richard Palmersheim. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Matt, 91, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at Colonial Manor Care Center in Elma after a short illness.

Mathias Joseph Palmersheim was born February 9, 1910 in rural Howard County, the son of John S. and Ella (Biwer) Palmersheim. He attended rural schools, St. Bernard’s Catholic School in Alta Vista, and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma.

On April 22, 1937 he married Dolores E. McGrane in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. Following their marriage, Matt and Dolores lived north of Jerico and farmed with his parents.

He was secretary of the Jerico Creamery for some time. They farmed in the Alta Vista and Elma areas until their retirement in 1975 when they moved to Elma. Matt then worked for Ludwig Plumbing and Heating for several years.

Matt was the Sacristan at Immaculate Conception Church for many years. He was also a Eucharistic Minister and frequently conducted daily prayer services on days when no Mass was held.

He is survived by his wife Dolores; five sons: Robert of Lawler, Kenneth of Lakeville, MN, Francis of Sioux City, Patrick of Elma, and Richard of Palm Desert, CA; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Anna Chambers of Federal Way, WA.

Matt was preceded in death by two grandsons; one great-grandson; his parents; and one brother: Joe.


Rev. Arthur Kleve

Funeral services for Rev. Arthur Kleve of Mason City were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar.

Monsignor James O. Barta officiated. Interment was in St. Aloysius Catholic Church Cemetery. French Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rev. Arthur Kleve, 70, died Thursday, July 5, 2001 at the Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque following a long illness.

He is survived by his five brothers and sisters: Melvin Kleve of Calmar, Jane Lugar of Mason City, Patricia Kephart of Lake Mills, Marilyn Kleve of Hiawatha, and Anita Gesing of Tulsa, OK.

Harry Larsen

Memorial services for Harry Larsen, of California, a native of Lime Springs, will held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 12 at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church.

Oakmont Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Harry, 85, died Friday, July 6, 2001 while salmon fishing off the Marin County coastline.

Harry E. Larsen was born October 11, 1916. After receiving his degree in civil engineering from the University of California Berkeley in 1948, he worked in marine construction for over 50 years.

He loved vegetable gardening and salmon fishing.

He is survived by his wife Virginia; children: Carol, Jean, John, and Anne; 11 granddaughters; sisters: Edna Mae, Grace, and Shirley; and one brother: Albert.

M. Palmersheim

Jerome Drilling

Funeral services for Jerome L. Drilling, a former Cresco native, were held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in San Diego, CA on Tuesday, July 10. Interment was at the El Comino Veterans Memorial Cemetery, with services by the military, the San Diego Fire Department and the Order of the Alhambras. Benbough Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Jerome, 84, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001 of heart failure.

On June 7, 1941 he married Verna Wall of Spearfish, SD at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in San Diego.

Following his tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in the Philippines during World War II, he returned to his career with the San Diego Fire Department, having attained the rank of assistant fire chief upon his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Verna; two sons: Jerry of Jerico Springs, MO and Greg of El Cajon, CA; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters: Arlene McGuigan of San Diego and Helen Valvoda of Oelwein; and one brother: Virgil of Des Moines.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents Nick and Teresa; and three brothers: Hugo, Arnold and Edward.


Rev. Arthur Kleve

Funeral services for Rev. Arthur Kleve of Mason City were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Monsignor James O. Barta officiated. Interment was in St. Aloysius Catholic Church Cemetery. French Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ronald Cassidy

Funeral services for Ronald Cassidy “Butch” were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at the United Methodist Church with interment in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, both in Lime Springs. The Rev. Margaret Asabea officiated. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ronald, 51, died on Saturday, July 7, 2001 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Ronald Lee Cassidy was born February 15, 1950 in Waterloo, the son of LaVon and Carl Cassidy. He attended grade school in Lime Springs and Cresco High School graduating in 1968. He attended the Journalism School of South Dakota State in Brookings, SD. He worked along with his father in publishing two newspapers and printing businesses. Later he was employed at the Snyder Printing Co. of Chatfield, MN.

Ronald was a member of the Lime Springs United Methodist Church. He was an avid gardner and loved being out in nature. He loved a wide variety of music, but especially praise and worship.

He is survived by his mother: LaVon; sisters: Carla Cassidy of Lime Springs and Maureen Persinger of West Des Moines; brothers: Gregory of Fort Collins, CO, Dr. Andrew of Rollo, MO, and Dr. Kent of Minneapolis, MN.

Ronald was preceded in death by his father, Carl and younger sister, Kathleen.


Raymond Pechota

Raymond Joseph Pechota, 73, died July 8, 2001 at Cedar Rapids. The Stewart Funeral Home of Cedar Rapids was in charge of the arrangements. Recitation of the Rosary and a prayer service was conducted by Rev. Gerald Condon of Gilbertville on July 10. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Little Turkey at noon on July 10 with Sr. Louann Doering of Lawler conducting the burial rites.

Raymond Joseph Pechota was born March 17, 1928 at Little Turkey, the son of Edward and Regina (Busta) Pechota. He attended school in the area, moved with his parents to New Hampton and later to Waterloo. He continued his education and became a high school graduate.

He entered the Army, and served in Vietnam. When he returned he worked in an airplane factory in California. He came back to Waterloo to be with his parents. In semi-retirement he was employed in the maintenance department in the courthouse in Cedar Rapids.

He is survived by one sister: Norma Wentworth.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Walter.


Angela Hyke

Funeral services for Angela Hyke were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27 at the Assumption Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco. Rev. Henry W. Charipar, Rev. Steve Peterson, and Rev. David Schatz officiated. Pall bearers were: Steven McGee, Richard McGee, Jason Bouska, Bob Murphy, Brandon Wright, Lester Hyke, Kirsten Olson, Ken Hyke, Cyndi Wright, Jason Gramlich, and Lon Watros. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Angela, 25, died Monday, July 9, 2001.

Angela Dynette Hyke was born December 31, 1975 in Cresco. She attended Notre Dame Elementary School and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1994. Angie was raised by her grandparents, Agnes and Gerald McGee.

Angela taught CCD and was involved in the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center. She was a creative person who enjoyed doing crafts and gave them as gifts. She liked the outdoors, canoeing, and animals. Angela had a great personality and friendly smile. She kept busy doing more things than she had time to do and somehow still made it look like fun. She was employed as a clerk at a grocery store.

She is survived by her parents: Francis and Audrey Hyke of Cresco and Sharee Melver of Lime Springs; three half-brothers: Joshua Lee Melver of Lime Springs, Daniel Francis Hyke and David Glen Hyke, both of Cresco; one half-sister: Jennifer Lynn Hyke of Cresco; two step-brothers: Jeremiah and Jason Bouska, both of Cresco; three step-sisters: Ralia Bouska of Jacksonville, NC, Stephanie Bouska of Sumner, and Kristen Earles of Harmony, MN; maternal grandfather: George Melver of Cresco; paternal grandmother: Agnes McGee of Cresco; and paternal great-grandmother: Lillian Stepan of Cresco.

Angela was preceded in death by two sisters: Tina Marie Hyke and Megan Mina Hyke, both in infancy; paternal grandfather: Glenn Hyke; maternal grandmother: Frances Melver; and paternal step-grandfather: Gerald McGee.


Ashley Lucas

Funeral services for Ashley Lucas were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27 at the Assumption Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco. Rev. Henry W. Charipar, Rev. Steve Peterson, and Rev. David Schatz officiated. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ashley, 8, died Monday, July 9, 2001.

Ashley Nichole Lucas was born April 12, 1993 in Cresco the daughter of Bert Lucas and Angela Hyke.

She was attending Notre Dame Elementary School and would have been in the third grade in the fall. Ashley liked to ride her bicycle, a proven fact by the band-aids she wore on her knees. She was very creative and did projects with her mother to give as gifts.

Ashley is survived by her father: Bert Lucas of Cresco; her grandparents: Rose Lucas of Cresco, Francis and Audrey Hyke of Cresco; Sharee Melver of Lime Springs; paternal great-grandmother: Ellen Stevens of Cresco; maternal great-grandfather: George Melver of Cresco; maternal great-grandmother: Agnes McGee of Cresco; and maternal great-grandmother: Lillian Stepan of Cresco.

Mathilda Lensing

Funeral services for Mathilda R. Lensing of Festina were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church with interment in Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church Cemetery, both in Festina. The Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiated. French Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mathilda, 95, died on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian following a lengthy illness.

She is survived by four sons: Gabriel of Torrence, CA, Vince of Decorah, James of Fort Atkinson, and Stan of Decorah; three daughters: Loretta Russell of North Pole, AK, Lillian Gerdes of Tucson, AZ, and Judy Mae Lensing of Des Moines; and one sister: Regina Burr of Garnavillo.


Mary Cooney

Funeral services for Mary Cooney will be held in Holy Cross Mortuary at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27 at Culver City, CA. She will be entombed in a mausoleum with her husband and daughter.

Mary died Thursday, July 19, 2001 in Ontario, CA.

Mary M. Cooney was born December 7, 1915 in Howard County Township, the daughter of Page Swain and Katheryn (Daley) Minear.

She is survived by one daughter: Karen Roff of Temecula, CA; three grandchildren; three sisters: Evangeline Fujioka of Cresco, Clare Poindexter of Artesia, CA, and Marjorie Jacobson of League City, TX; and one brother: Irvin Minear of Cresco.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Charles E.; one daughter: Majel King; two brothers: Bob and John of Cresco; and one sister: Virginia Strasser of Bakersfield, CA.


Marian Applen

Funeral services for Marian Applen of Rochester, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 26 at Pax Christi Church in Rochester. Rev. Patrick Arens officiated. Mahn Family Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.

Marian, 68, died Friday, July 20, 2001 near Las Vegas, NV due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Marian Rita Applen was born November 2, 1932 in Battle Creek, the daughter of George and Mary (Schleimer) Mohrhauser. She worked for Amway for the past 40 years. She worked at Adamson Motors in Rochester for the past several years.

She was a member of Pax Christi Church in Rochester. She was also a member of many dance troops including: tap, clogging, square, round, and Polish hop polka dancing. She was involved in the Kitchen Band and also in Beginning Experiences (BE) both in Rochester. She volunteered for various Alzheimer’s Association activities.

She enjoyed camping, reading, and physical activities.

She is survived by four children: Steven of Coon Rapids, MN, Sharon Applen-Kaaya of Minneapolis, MN, Sandy Albert of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Scott of Olathe, KS; one grandson; her mother: Mary of Cresco; three sisters: Darlene Perry of Cresco, Beverly Wilson of Atwater, CA, and Joan Werett of Cresco; and one brother: Wayne of Rochester, MN.

Marian was preceded in death by her father.


John Schimming

Funeral services for John Schimming of rural Canton, MN were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24 at Assumption Catholic Church with interment in Calvary Cemetery both in Canton. Rev. Steve Peterson officiated. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 68, died Friday, July 20, 2001 at his home.

John G. Schimming was born May 25, 1933 at Decorah the only child of John Joseph and Kathryn (Haberly) Schimming. He graduated from high school and later from college, following that he entered the Navy in 1951.

On May 12, 1955 he married Phyllis Remke in Decorah. He retired from the Navy as a Comdr. in 1973.

John is survived by his wife Phyllis; three sons: Norman of Suffolk, VA, Michael of McHenry, IL, and John of Necedah, WI; and six grandchildren.


Frank Phillips

Funeral services for Frank Phillips of Spillville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. Honorary pall bearers were: all of Frank’s co-workers. Pall bearers were: Larry Phillips, Gene Shindelar, Dave Panos, Kevin Phillips, Greg Hron, and Lee Panoch. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Frank, 61, died Friday, July 20, 2001 at Palmer Health Care Center in West Union.

Frank Louie Phillips was born April 19, 1940 the son of George and Mary (Puffer) Phillips on their farm near Spillville. Frank attended St. Wenceslaus School.

On November 5, 1963 he married Cheryl Tollefsrud at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Frank worked as a heavy equipment operator for Dick Swehla, Gary Wiltgen, and Bruening Rock Products up to April 20, 2001.

He liked to go fishing, hunting, turtling, gardening, and listening to polka and country music.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl of Spillville; two sons: Larry of Festina and Kevin of Spillville; one daughter: Lori Phillips-Martin of Decorah; four grandchildren; one brother: Joseph of New Port Richey, FL; and two sisters: Mary Svoboda and Marcella Lucas both of Cresco.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: John and George; and two sisters: Christine Krivachek and Pauline Kuhn.


Mary Bouska

Funeral services for Mary Bouska were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24 at the Assumption Worship Center, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco. Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Pall bearers were her grandchildren: Jim, Tim, Al, Dennis, Gary, Nick and Mark Bouska, Dan, Jamie, and Tony Harris, Barry Rausch, Diane Archer, Debbie Bouska, Susan Hansen and Patty Bouska. Mary, 91, died Saturday, July 21, 2001 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco where she has lived since July 31, 2000.

Mary Rose Bouska was born September 16, 1909 in Howard county, between Protivin and Schley, the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Panoch) Samec. She attended school in Protivin and returned home to help on the farm.

On April 12, 1926 she married Alfred G. Bouska in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They made their home on various farms in the Schley area until 1941 when they moved to a farm near Granger, MN. In the 1950s they moved into Cresco and Mary started working in the local hardware stores. Prior to retirement, she worked for Frank Church in his shop.

Mary liked gardening and canning of the produce she raised. She was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church, its Rosary Society and helped on many projects, such as sewing and the church dinners. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons: Edward of Dunkerton and Alfred of Prior Lake, MN; one daughter: Angeline Harris of Carroll; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Alfred on November 30, 1993; her parents; three sisters: Victoria Berka, Emma Soukup, and Rose Webster; and six brothers: Alois, Joseph, Frank, Edward, Charles, and James.


Rose Kuboushek

Funeral services for Rose Kuboushek of Spillville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 28 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with interment in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, both at Spillville. Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Pall bearers were: Leo Sobolik, Tom Kovarik, Adolph Humpal, Jr., Larry Kovarik, Lester Humpal, Stanley Kovarik, and Valley Kuboushek. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Rose, 96, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Rose Louise Kuboushek was born January 21, 1905 on a farm near Spillville, the daughter of Alois and Emma (Hospodarsky) Kovarik. She attended Spillville schools.

On May 14, 1928 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville she married James Kuboushek. They farmed near Spillville until moving into Spillville in 1968.

Rose had many flowers and a garden for canning, she also liked to cook, play cards, crochet, and bake kolaches.

She was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Church.

She is survived by two sons: Leonard of Spillville and Wesley of Calmar; eight grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one brother: Alois of Spillville.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband James; her parents; one brother: Edward; and one sister: Celia Brady.


Richard Watts

Funeral services for Richard E. Watts of Salinas, CA were held on Friday, August 3, at VFW Post 7895 in Salinas. He was cremated and inurnment was in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA.

Richard, 70, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas following an illness.

He was born in Cresco and has lived there most of his life. He has lived in Salinas for the last 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foregin Wars Post 7895, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 101, and the American Legion 589, all in Salinas, CA.

He is survived by two daughters: Judy Woldum of Fullerton and Ellen Lenk of Spanaway, WA; three sons: Jeff of Tacoma, WA and Pat and Mike both of Puyallup, WA; three brothers: William and Donald both of Iowa, and Art of Illinois; three sisters: Louise Sweaney and Viola Kerr, both of Iowa, and Mildred Olson of Illinois; and nine grandchildren.


Paul Groteboer

Funeral services for Paul Groteboer of Rochester, MN were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 27 at Christ United Methodist Church with interment in Oakwood Cemetery both in Rochester. Vine Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Paul Adelbert Groteboer was born December 2, 1911 in Granger, MN, the son of John and Minnie (Ludwig) Groteboer. He grew up and attended school in Granger.

He married Gynith Erickson and together they farmed near Cresco until they moved to Rochester in 1957. Paul worked at IBM until his retirement.

Paul was very active and was employed after his retirement at Billings Hardware and Andy’s until 1999.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 44 years.

He is survived by his wife Gynith; two daughters: Beverly Katter of Milwaukee, WI and Marlys Kramer of Stewartville, MN; two sons: Merl and Dennis both of Rochester; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Paul was preceded in death by one son: Gary; and his parents.


Stanley Borseth

Funeral services for Stanley A. Borseth of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 30 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Rev. Tom Miller officiated. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Stanley, 70, died Thursday, July 26, 2001 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian following a short illness.

He is survived by his wife Majorie of Decorah; one brother: Norman of Decorah; and two sisters: Sadie Ward of Frankville and Arla Hirsch of Charles City.


Walter Gager

Funeral services for Walter Gager will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, both at Cresco. Rev. Bruce Hobert will officiate. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Walter, 84, died Saturday, July 28, 2001 at Samaritan Hospital in Macon, MO.

Walter Alvin Gager was born October 10, 1916 the son of Herbert Leslie and Margaret (Kaufman) Gager. He attended the Cresco public schools and was a veteran of WWII (European Theatre).

On June 20, 1946 he married Harriet L. Hovey at Cherry Grove, MN. Walter operated or was employed at various Cresco service stations for many years. He also was employed as a custodian at Crestwood High School for several years before retiring.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He lived in Cresco all of his life until May of 2001 when he moved to the Macon Health Care Center in Macon, MO near where his daughter Kathleen resides and where his granddaughters work.

Walter enjoyed reading, fishing, watching John Wayne movies, working in his yard, and going to Crestwood High School sports events.

He is survived by two daughters: Kathleen Hruska of Atlanta, MO and Marlys Dobry of Monmouth, IL; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother: Verne of Marshalltown; and three sisters: Jennie Hagen of Des Moines, Ellen Stevens and Carol Casey both of Cresco.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife Harriet on November 12, 1987; one grandson; his parents; one brother: Donald; and four sisters: Edna Sears, Thelma Rotte, Evelyn Swim, and Marian, who died in infancy.


Glenn Kirchner

Funeral services for Glenn Kirchner of Decorah were held on Thursday, August 2 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Interment was in St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Glenn, 69, died Monday, July 30, 2001 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a lengthy illness.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly of Decorah; two daughters: Glenda Moen of Hudson, WI and Kaleen Hanson of Waukon; three sons: Steven of Vale, CO, David of Decorah, and Michael of Rochester, MN; and his mother: Maude (Kirchner) Pruisman of Decorah.


Elizabeth Scheidel

Funeral services for Elizabeth “Betty” Scheidel were held on Wednesday, August 1 at the Holy Cross Church with interment in the Holy Cross Cemetery, both in Schley. Rev. John Moser, Rev. Leo Riley, and Rev. Allen Schmitt officiated. Honorary pall bearers were: Mr. and Mrs. Gene Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy McCarroll, and Mr. and Mrs. Vern Schmitt. Pall bearers were: Steve Simmen, Dave Simmen, Arlis Bader, Larry Bader, Randy Reicks, Tom Schatz, Craig Shores, and Reggie Horak. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Elizabeth Scheidel was born December 30, 1937 in Winneshiek County near Spillville, the daughter of Louis and Adela (Kalishek) Bader. She attended and graduated from high school at Rudolphinium in Protivin.

On September 25, 1956 she married Norman Scheidel at the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. Following their marriage they moved on the home farm in Schley.

She served as a volunteer for The Blood Mobile, and a committee member of the Schley Holy Cross Rosary Society, the Howard County Hospital Auxiliary, the Howard County Fair Board, the Howard County Care Facility Auxiiary and Board and recently named to the President Advocate Committee for the Howard County Residential Care Facility.

Her hobbies included sewing, working in the garden, cooking, antiquing, and fishing.

She is survived by her husband Norman of Cresco; two daughters: Lynelle Scheidel of Des Moines and Lori Jo Scheidel of Boulder, CO; three sons: Lon, Loren, and Lynn, all of Cresco; two grandchildren; two sisters: LaVerne Simmen of Central City and Donna Mae Shores of Winston Salem, NC; and one brother: Robert Bader of Protivin.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by one daughter: LuAnn.
