Stella Weber

Funeral services for Stella Weber of Lamar, MO will be held at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 4 at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The Rev. Jacob Biernaci will officiate. Interment will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Pallbearers are: Steve Besse, Christopher Besse, Dennis Besse, Jerry Weber, Jimmy Weber, Steve Loudermilk. Honorary pallbearers are: Lonnie LaBoue and Scott McAfee. Daniel Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Stella, 86, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Christian Health Care of Nevada after a one month illness.

Stella Barbara Weber was born May 18, 1914 at Myer in Mitchell County, the daughter of Edward Frank and Lena (Klapperich) Hemann.

On February 18, 1939 she married George Joseph Weber at Myer.

Survivors include three sons: Duane of Lamar, MO, John of Sheldon, MO and Martin of Iantha, MO; three daughters: Mary Besse of Morgan City, LA, Caroline Weber of Kansas City, MO and Sandra Coy of Sheldon, MO; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Sylvester of Osage and Lawrence also of Osage.

Stella was preceded in death by her husband George on August 28, 1991; one daughter; one son; three brothers; and one sister.


April 11, 2001

 Wilma Owen

Funeral services for Wilma Owen of Lime Springs will be held today, Wednesday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Stephens Catholic Church in Chester.

Rev. Ray E. Atwood will officiate. Interment is in the Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers are: Greg Frost, John Meyer, Barbara Ball, Diane Bowen, Steve Munkel, Kathleen McGinn, Elaine and Larry Munkel. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Wilma F. Owen was born July 28, 1910 at Waucoma, the daughter of John J. and Josephine (Bouska) Meyer.

On November 24, 1930 she married Mose Owen.

Wilma worked in Vander Bie Hardware in Lime Springs for 34 years before she retired and cared for her mother.

Survivors include three sisters: Margaret Pisny of Chester, Elaine Munkel of Decorah, and Luella Frost of St. Donatus; and one brother Robert of Lime Springs.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband on November 28, 1982, her parents, and two brothers: Earl and Edward.


Arla Snitker

Funeral services for Arla H. Snitker of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 6 at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah.

The Rev. Ole Winter officiated. Interment was in the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arla, 64, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at the Winneshiek county Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a lengthy illness.

Survivors include her husband Charles of Decorah; one son: Michael of Gurnee, IL; one daughter: Sandra Motzko of Highland Park, IL; two grandchildren; her father: Norman Moen, Sr. of Decorah; and one brother: Norman, Jr. of Decorah


Lori Souhrada

Funeral services for Lori Souhrada of Cresco will be held today at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Pastors Gary Lee and Tim Sir officiating.

Interment will be in the Saratoga cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Lori, 33, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at her home after a sudden heart attack.

Lori Ann Souhrada was born May 20, 1967 in Decorah the daughter of James and Sharon Spilde. She graduated from Crestwood High School in 1985.

On July 23, 1988 she married Robert T. Sindelar and later divorced. She then married Aaron J. Souhrada on September 11, 1999. Lori was employed at Bethany Housewares in Cresco at the time of her death.

Survivors include her husband Aaron; one daughter, Kayla; and two sons: Kyle and Kody all of Lime Springs; her parents, James and Sharon of Cresco; two sisters: Deborah Brandt of Bellevue, NE and Amy Leverson of Lime Springs; and her paternal grandmother, Florence Spilde of Decorah.


Dolores Davis

Funeral services for Dolores Davis of Cresco will be held today at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 11 at the St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco.

Rev. Kenneth Gehling and Rev. Henry Charipar will be officiating. Interment is in the Calvary Cemetery, Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Dolores Davis was born February 26, 1925 at Ossian. Her family moved to Cresco in 1929 and she lived in the Cresco area until moving to the Twin Cities in late 1998.

She married Derrill Davis on July 18, 1945. They farmed north of Cresco, where they raised dairy cattle, beef cattle and prize-winning corn, until their retirement in 1981. Dolores was active in many local organizations during the years. This included being a board member for the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District, Cresco Public Library, and Evans Memorial Home. She was a member of the Howard County Historical Society, Farm Bureau Women's Club, Cilo Club and was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Lynn of Edina, MN; three daughters: Cheryl Basztura of Trumbull, CT, Dr. Constance Davis of Athens, OH, and Marcia Davis-Cannon of Mountain View, CA; Six grandchildren; two brothers: Ralph and Roger Kleve of Cresco; five sisters: Ann Scharnweber, Joan Carolan, and Marie McAllister all of Cresco, Jeanette Chwialkowski of Bloomington, Minnesota and Diane Bohr of Decorah.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband in 1992 and her parents, Mary and Hugo Kleve.

Edith Pacovsky

Funeral services for Edith Pacovsky were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home.

The Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in Bohemian National Cemetery, Protivin. Pallbearers were: Wayne Mlady, Kenneth Hubka, Marinus Mlady, Wesley Webb, Ed Vokaty, and Robert Hansen. Honorary pallbearers were great-grandchildren: Corey Wegner, Shelby Vorwald, Jessica Riha, Jason Wegner, Sadie Wren, Heather Riha, Autumn Vorwald, Amanda Riha, Jason Fidder, and Joshua Foster.

Edith, 90, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001.

Edith Pacovsky was born June 14, 1910 on a farm in Howard County, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Kostka) Mlady.

On August 28, 1935 she married Grant Pacovsky. They farmed near Protivin until they retired to Cresco.

Survivors include two sons: Melvin and Grant both of New Hampton; one daughter: Darlene Foster of Poplar Grove, IL; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister: Grace Hubka of Cresco.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband Grant on July 5, 1989; one son: Frankie; her parents; two sisters: Blanche Vokaty and Mamie Mracek; and three brothers: Joe, Bill and Melvin.


D. Groenwald

Funeral services for Dorothy Groenwald of Lime Springs will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 19 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs.

The Rev. Linda Johnson will officiate. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs.

Friends may call at the funeral home for one hour before services.

Dorothy, 87, died Saturday, April 14, 2001 at her home.

Sarah Laub

Funeral services for Sarah Laub were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 16 at the Assumption Worship Center.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Sarah died on April 5, 2001.

Sarah Elizabeth Laub was born May 28, 1981. She grew up on a farm west of Cresco.

She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church; was baptized May 18, 1986; and naturalized as a U.S. citizen on October 22, 1986. She received her First Communion on April 2, 1989 and was Confirmed on April 16, 1997. She attended Cresco High School for two years; was home schooled one year and graduated from Decorah High School on May 30, 1999. She was presently a junior at Luther College in Decorah.

Her activities included: playing piano, clarinet and violin. She was an excellent swimmer; was in 4-H for nine years, and was on the Howard County 4-H and Youth Committee and County Council. Sarah was on the track team in junior high and the golf team in high school. She participated in drama events and won several I ratings at state speech contests. She was selected to go to a Law and Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C., for a month and won the Mock Trail Award. While in college, she participated in Mock Trial and won the Outstanding Lawyer and Outstanding Witness Awards. In June of 1998, Sarah was named Howard County Fair Queen.

Survivors include her mother Gretchen; two sisters: Lucy and Tanya; one brother: George, all of Cresco; and grandmother: Mary Laub of Cresco.


Adam Samec

Funeral services for Adam J. Samec were held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Adam, 20, died Wednesday, April 11 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco, cause of death pending an autopsy report.

Survivors include his father Adrian of Cresco; mother and stepfather: Vicky and Tony Reicks of Ridgeway; one brother: Chris of Cresco; his half sister: Jessica Reicks of Ridgeway; grandparents: Yvonne and Richard Franks and Anna and William Samec, all of Cresco and Jim and JoAnn Hale of Sacramento, CA.


Ralph Roney

Funeral services for Ralph O. Roney of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 12 at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah.

The Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Ole Winter and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiated. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ralph, 88, died Monday, April 9, 2001 at the Winneshiek County Hospital in Decorah.

Survivors include his wife Angeline of Decorah; four daughters: Jeanette Harms of Pierre, SD, Ruth Farley of New Albin, Elaine Kessler of Port St. Lucie FL, and Trudy Barrett of Loveland, CO; five sons: Robert of Decorah, Donald of Loveland, CO, Arlin of Moncks Corner, SC, Duane of Charles City, and Dale of Waukon; 41 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters: Audrey Smock of Coronado, CA, Evelyn Anderson of Decorah, and Marlys Roney of Cedar Rapids.

Clarence Herold 

Funeral services for Clarence "Winker" Herold were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Killeen, TX.

The Rev. Charles Davis officiated. Interment was in Killeen City Cemetery. Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Clarence, 90, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at a Temple hospital.

Clarence Herold was born August 26, 1910 in Lisbon, ND.

Before Herold retired from the U.S. Army in Ocober 1964, he had served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His military awards included the National Defense Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with the bronze clasp and five loops, the Army Occupation Medal-Germany, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star, the American Defense Service Ribbon and the Carbine Marksmanship Badge.

Herold had also retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a member of Council 4724 of the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife Alice (Joerger) Herold; two sons: Dennis, Douglas of Austin, TX; one daughter: Barbara Muerer of Katy; four grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and a sister: Viola Benda of Kansas City, MO.

Clarence was preceded in death by an infant son: Gordon; and one sister: Irene Herold.


Andrew Kruse

Funeral services for Andrew B. Kruse of Decorah, formerly of St. Lucas, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 27 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah.

The Rev. Gary Krapfl will officiate.

Friends may call on Thursday, April 26 at the French and Balik Funeral Home from 3:00-8:00 p.m. and also at the church on Friday after 9:30 a.m. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday.

Andrew, 88, died Monday, April 23, 2001 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Survivors include his wife Bernadette of Decorah and one daughter: Elaine Hageman of Des Moines.


Agnes Lechtenberg

Funeral services for Agnes Lechtenberg of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 19 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton.

The Rev. Carl Schmitt officiated. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. The pall was placed on the casket by her daughters: Darlene Aegerter and Alice Pomplun. Pallbearers were: Mark Lechtenberg, Pat Aegerter, Troy Lechtenberg, Travis Lechtenberg, Matt Lechtenberg, Jason Eichenberger, Derek Lechtenberg and Scott Lechtenberg. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Agnes, 91, died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

Agnes P. Lechtenberg was born June 22, 1909 in St. Lucas the daughter of Chris and Rose (Franzen) Schwamman. She attended St. Luke's School in St. Lucas.

On February 15, 1938 she married Anton Lechtenberg at St. Lukes Catholic Church. The couple lived a brief time near Roseville and then moved to their farm northwest of New Hampton. In 1984, Agnes moved to her current home. She spent a brief time in the nursing home.

Memberships include St. Mary's Church, Rosary Society and Choir. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, word puzzles, reading, gardening and flowers.

Survivors include five sons: Delbert of New Hampton, Kenneth of North Washington, Richard of New Hampton, Dale of New Hampton and Dennis of North Washington; two daughters: Darlene Aegerter of New Hampton and Alice Pomplun of Warroad, MN; 29 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a sister: Anastasia Holder of Waucoma.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Anton on December 6, 1982; her parents; three sisters; and five brothers.


Dorothy Groenwald

Funeral services for Dorothy Groenwald were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 19 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs.

The Rev. Linda Johnson officiated. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Dorothy, 87, died Saturday, April 14, 2001 at her home.

Dorothy Groenwald was born August 6, 1913 the daughter of Wilbur and Diana (Harris) Brynes of Reinbeck. She graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1930.

On February 18, 1931 she married Harold W. Groenwald in New Ulm, MN. She and Harold moved to Lime Springs in 1951. Dorothy was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband Harold; one son: Robert of Bear Lake, MI; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three brothers: Wendell of Grundy Center, Edwin of Devils Lake, ND, and Lawrence of Waterloo; and a sister: Faye Benway of Littleton, CO.

Dorothy was preceded in death by one great-grandchild; her parents, three brothers: Theodore, Harris and George; and one sister: Florence Viken.


Adam Samec

Funeral services for Adam Samec were held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco.

The Rev. Henry W. Charipar and Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Adam, 20, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at his home.

Adam Jon Samec was born December 8, 1980 in Cresco, the son of Adam and Vicky (Franks) Samec. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the same church in which he remained a member and was employed during the last five years. Adam attended Crestwood Elementary and graducated with honors from Crestwood High School in May of 1999. During this time he developed his talent for art and writing. He loved to write, especially music. He taught himself how to play the guitar and his dream was to write songs. He liked to draw and was an artist in the true sense of the word.

Survivors include his father: Adrian of Cresco; his mother and stepfather: Vicky and Tony Reicks of Ridgeway; one brother: Chris of Cresco; a half sister: Jessica Reicks of Ridgeway; his grandparents: Richard and Yvonne Franks of Cresco, JoAnn and Jim Hale of Sacramento, CA, and Bill and Anna Samec of Cresco.


Lucille Johnson

Funeral services for Lucille Johnson were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 23 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs.

The Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs.

Lucille Isabella Johnson was born February 25, 1903 in rural Chester the daughter of John Albert and Frances Cordelia (Smith) Johnson. She attended a rural school one through eighth grade and graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1921. She attended Carleton College, Iowa State College and received her B.A. from the State University of Iowa in 1932. She taught in rural schools and also taught in West Des Moines, Perry, Maynard, Cherokee and Mason City. She started the Special Education Program in Cherokee and started the Jr. High Program for Educable Mentally Retarded in Mason City in 1951 and taught there until her retirement in 1969. Lucille moved to Sumner in 1992. She entered Hillcrest Nursing Home in February of 1998 where she remained until her death on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the age of 98 years.

Lucille was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, life member of the Iowa State Education Association, a 50 year member of the WaTanYe Club, First Presbyterian Church, Alpha Delta Kappa, and a life member of the Pioneer Museum Historical Society.

Survivors include one brother: George of Chester; and two sisters: Mabel Rembold of Sumner and Nellie Miller of Chillicother, IL.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; one brother: Allen; and one sister: Clarice Van Zante.


Merlin Miller

Funeral services for Merlin Miller of Clear Lake were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Riceville.

The Rev. Alf Merseth officiated. Interment was in St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery south of Riceville. Pallbearers were employees and friends from Opportunity Village: Chris Cash, Mike Hall, Don Nichols, Wayne Skyrme, John Cobb, John Olson, Johnny Schmidt, and Gordon Peterson. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Merlin, 70, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Merlin Raymond Miller was born in Iowa on April 10, 1931, was adopted by Walter and Lizzy Miller, and was baptized in his faith on May 3, 1931 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Maple Leaf. Merlin lived with his parents Walter and Anna Miller on the farm, until they moved into Riceville and he lived at home until Walter died January 1977. Merlin moved into Opportunity Village in February 1977 and lived there for 24 years.

Merlin enjoyed country music, flowers and reminiscing about his early years.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Dorothy in 1924.
