Darlene A. Morgan

 

MISSOULA, Mont. — Darlene A. Morgan, 82, of Missoula, passed away on April 27, 2011, at Community Hospital of natural causes surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Dougherty, Iowa, on Feb. 26, 1929, to Leonard A. Zweck and Eleanor E.

(McLaughlin) Zweck. She was educated in Dougherty and attended college at St. Theresa’s in Minnesota.

Darlene grew up on and worked the family farm. After attending college she was employed at the Forensics Lab at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn. She also worked for Salsbury Chemicals, Inc., for American Title Co., and as a bookkeeper for their family business, Morgan’s Tavern, in Charles City.

She married John P. Morgan on Feb. 4, 1961, in Dougherty, Iowa. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

She was a very active member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City.

In her younger years, Darlene enjoyed going to The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake with her sister, Mary Margaret, best friend, Agnes Ewen, and friend, Bob Reed. She also took wonderful care of her younger siblings and was always willing to listen. She enjoyed playing tennis and spending time with friends while in college. After she met John, through mutual friends Ray and Ruth Huxol, they enjoyed going dancing at several ballrooms in the area.

Following their retirement, they moved to Missoula to be close to their daughter. After moving to Missoula she attended St. Francis Xavier Church for over 18 years.

Darlene enjoyed time with family and friends. She always loved spending time with her granddaughter Danielle. Seeing her granddaughter every day was a highlight of her life. Holiday dinners were always a great occasion, as Darlene was a great cook and everyone enjoyed her company.

Her great joy was seeing and hearing stories about her greatgranddaughter,Ava Marie Beasley. Darlene was preceded in death by her father, Leonard A. Zweck; her mother, Eleanor E. Zweck; brothers, Donald Zweck and John Zweck; her sister, Mary Margaret (Zweck) Reed; a niece; and numerous other family members.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Morgan, of Missoula; daughter, Kathleen Morgan, of Missoula; granddaughter, Danielle Beasley, of Freeport, Ill.; great-granddaughter, Ava Marie Beasley, of Freeport, Ill.; brother, Bob Zweck, of Montrose, Colo.; brother, Joe Zweck, of Lonsdale, Minn.; and sisters-in-law, Alice Zweck, Dorenda Zweck, Rita Zweck, and Kathy Zweck.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Liturgy of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 7, celebrated at St. Anthony Church in Missoula. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow at Sunset Memorial.

Condolences and memorial donations may be made in care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 7405 Mullan Road, Missoula, MT 59808, or to other charities of choice. Memorial donations will be placed in trust for the college education of Darlene’s only greatgrandchild, Ava Beasley. It was of great importance to Darlene that her great-grandchild attend college.

Evelyne Ann Knapp

 

 

Evelyne Ann Knapp, 1-month-old daughter of Anthony and Holly Knapp, of Charles City, died April 29, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Private family services will be held at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.

Evelyne Ann Knapp was born March 30, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Although Evelyne’s time with us was short, she filled our hearts with a lifetime of love.

Living family members include her parents; maternal grandparents, Jeff and Jean Weigel, of Charles City; paternal grandparents, Sandra and Tom Brownlow, of Charles City, and Bruce and Maria Knapp, of Milwaukee, Wis.; maternal great-grandparents, Irma Hamm, of Charles City, and James and Sharon Weigel, of Charles City; paternal great-grandparents, Theresa Cyra, of German Town, Wis., and Roland and Naomi Knapp, of Jackson, Wis.; aunts and uncles, Bruce Jr. and Pamela Knapp, of Port Washington, Wis., Vincent Knapp, of Milwaukee, Wis., Nichole Weigel, of Charles City, and Amanda Hamm, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather, Leonard Hamm and paternal step-grandfather, Peter May.

Mary A. Richards
Mary A. Richards, 77, of Charles City, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Mary Richards will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-7 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass. Mary Anne Foxen Richards was born Sept. 21, 1933, at Osage, the daughter of Matthew and Agnes (Spoden) Foxen. She attended school at New Haven. On Feb. 25, 1956, she was united in marriage to Paul Richards at Mason City. In 1957 they moved to Charles City. Paul died on Aug. 12, 2002. Mary was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Ministry of Praise, and V.F.W. Auxiliary. For several years she was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary at the Floyd County Medical Center. Her interests included fishing, dancing, traveling and playing cards. Family was always important to Mary and she looked forward to sharing her life with them.

Living family members include two children, Julie (Leland) Hansen, of Independence, and David Richards, of Prior Lake, Minn.; a grandson, Jason Richards; a step-grandson; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Matt (Delores) Foxen, Jr., Ed Foxen, Joe (Carole) Foxen and Jerome (Beverly) Foxen, all of Charles City; and three sisters, Agnes Aringdale, of Charles City, Wilma “Jeanie” (Jim) Onken, of Orchard, and Norma “Jeanie” (Dave) Crandall, of Chickasaw.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, James Richards and a step grandson, Ryan Moetsch.

Gertrude Gage

 

Gertrude Gage, of Laguna Vista, Texas, and formerly of Charles City, passed away in Harlingen, Texas, Dec. 3, 2010. She was 84.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans J. (1979) and Gertrude Wolfers (1986), and her husband, Dean L. Gage, in 1989. She was followed in death by her eldest son, Richard, in February 2011.

She is survived by her only sibling, Joan Utz, of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Grace Barenz, of Osage; cousin James Gerlach (Marian), of Ft. Smith, Ark.; and two sons, Larry Gage, of Laguna Vista, Texas, and Martin Gage, of Mason City. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was born Gertrude Wolfers in Milwaukee, Wis., June 12, 1926. She grew up in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1944. She met Dean Gage, also a student at CCHS, and they were married in Charles City, April 19, 1945, when he was home on leave from the U.S.

Army Air Corps.

The couple moved to New Hampton after WW II, then to Hampton in 1966. They relocated to South Texas in 1983.

Gertrude is remembered as a loving wife and devoted mother. She sang for many years in the Methodist Church choirs in New Hampton, Hampton, and Port Isabel, Texas. She was a very successful Avon sales representative for over 30 years until forced to retire for health reasons in 2010.

A funeral service for Gertrude and her son Richard will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

Donald S. Jensen

Donald S. Jensen, 85, of Charles City and formerly of Nashua, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at St. Michaels Cemetery, Nashua with military honors by the Nashua VFW Post. Friends may greet the family beginning 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua.

Almeda A. Obermeier

Almeda A. Obermeier, 98, of Charles City, died Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Almeda Obermeier will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in SunnysideMemory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Church.

Almeda Alice Kneisel was born Aug. 14, 1912, in Floyd County, the daughter of Charles and Lida Ann (McCarty) Kneisel. She graduated from Charles City High School. On Oct. 15, 1930, she was united in marriage to Anthony “Tony” Obermeier in Austin, Minn. Almeda was employed at Davis Paint and retired from Sears. For many years Almeda was a Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anthony’s Circle, McKinley Home Craft Circle and Wildwood Ladies Golf Association. Her interests included golfing, crocheting, knitting, needle point work and mowing her lawn.

Living family members include her three daughters, Darlene Weiss, of Janesville, Sheila Fisher, of Charles City, and Karen (Dick) Keating, of Banning, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Roger Fisher; four sisters; and two brothers.

Pearl ‘Dee’ Robertson

Pearl “Dee” Robertson, 66, of Davenport, passed away on April 29, 2011 at St. Mary Healthcare. Private family services will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Online condolences may be made at www.rungemortuary.com.

Dee was born in 1944 in Oakland, Calif., to John and Wilma (Bonsall) Smith. She retired from the Rock Island Arsenal after over 20 years of employment.

She enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include: her son, Terry Robertson, of Davenport; former husband, Jack Robertson, of Quincy, Ill.; two brothers, Tracy Wenger, of Davenport, and Phillip Varner, of Sacramento, Calif.; sisters-in-law Debra Varner, of Sacramento, Calif., and Jean Smith, of Sanford, Maine; three nephews. John and Corey Smith, of Sanford, Maine, and Jarod Varner of Sacramento, Calif.; and one niece, Lindsay Varner, of Sacramento, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, John and William Smith.

Donald S. Jensen

Donald S. Jensen, 85, of Charles City, formerly of Nashua, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Nashua with military honors by the Nashua VFW Post.

Donald Stuart Jensen was born June 5, 1925, in rural Chickasaw County, near Nashua, the son of Clarence and Doris Mae (Johnston) Jensen. He received his education in Nashua graduating from the Nashua High School in 1943. Donald immediately began working at the former Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 1, 1944. He served until being honorably discharged on May 17, 1946.

On Aug. 14, 1948, at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Nashua, he married Garland Haag. To this union four children were born. Don stayed working at Oliver until retiring in 1981. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, reading, cooking and spending time with his family. He was a active member of the Nashua VFW Post where he had been Past Commander.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Garland; one son, Larry (Lori) Jensen, of Monticello; three daughters, Cindy (Gary) Demro, of Faribault, Minn., Becky (Ken) Meyer, of Mason City, and Kathy (Doug) Mayer, of Charles City; seven grandchildren: Paul Demro, Maura O’Brien, Dawn Lester, Jeff Mayer, Kari Olson, Abby Jensen and Mitch Jensen; two great-grandchildren, William Demro and Jemma Olson; two brothers, Charles Jensen, of Nashua, and Paul (Barb) Jensen, of Nashua; and one sister, Myla (Fred) Timmer, of Nashua.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister-in-law, Ada Jane Jensen.

Arthur L. Groen

Arthur L. Groen, 95, of Shell Rock, formerly of Nashua, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at St. John Lutheran Church, Nashua with Pastor Tom Hagen officiating.

Friends may greet the family from 5-8 p.m.

Friday May 6, at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home, Nashua. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City with grandsons Steve Groen, Darren Groen, Mike Croll, Doug Croll, Todd Duryee and Ed Houlahan serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Art’s granddaughters Suzy Duryee, Dawn Houlahan, Abby Croll, Angie Croll, Nessa Groen, and Robyn Groen.

Arthur LeRoy Groen was born Feb. 17, 1916, in Hardin County, the son of Pete and Dena (Eckhoff) Groen. He attended rural country school and helped on the family farm until the age of 14 when he left home and began working as a hired hand near Charles City. On May 23, 1943, Art was united in marriage to Madelon Ann Beekman at St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City. To this union, three children were born. Over the years the couple farmed mainly in the Nashua area until retiring in 1982. In retirement, Art enjoyed fishing trips to the Mississippi River, refurbishing old trunks and furniture, and a good nap after lunch.

A long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, Art belonged to the Lutheran Brotherhood and the men’s dart ball team which he enjoyed thoroughly until his health prevented him from participating any longer. Never known to turn down a game of cards, he and Madelon belonged to a 500 card club and a canasta club for over 50 years. In 2005, Art moved to Shell Rock and Healthcare Center, where he received excellent care and frequently received visits from family and friends. Art was a very generous, kind hearted person and will be missed by many.

Survivors include two sons, Larry (Linda) Groen, of Nashua, and Darrell (Juanita) Groen, of Waverly; a daughter, Karla (Bruce) Croll, of Des Moines; six grandchildren: Steve (Robyn) Groen, of La Jolla, Calif., Suzy (Todd) Duryee, of Marble Rock, Darren (Nessa) Groen, of Waverly, Dawn (Ed) Houlahan, of Posen, Ill., Mike (Abby) Croll, of Des Moines, and Doug (Angie) Croll, of West Des Moines; seven great-grandchildren: Samantha and Carly Duryee, Peyton Groen, Connor and Dylan Houlahan, Lauren Croll and Molly Croll; two brothers, Ray Groen, of Waverly, and Marvin “Bud” Groen, of Waterloo; three sisters, Ethel (Bernard) Buskhol, of Holland, Dorothy Brocka, of Bristow, and Beaulah (Gerry) Vetter, of Nashua; and many nieces and nephews.

Art was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Madelon; his parents; a step-mother, Pauline Groen; three brothers, Irvin, Wilbur and Bernard Groen; three sisters, Ione Gosch, Ruth Ellerman and Marlys Schrage; and a granddaughter, Sandy Groen.

Shirley M. Bennett

CEDAR RAPIDS — Shirley M. Bennett, 81, of Northbrook Manor Care Center, died there on Wednesday May 4, 2011. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Charles City. Inurnment at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathi (Hugh) Albrecht, of Cedar Rapids, and Karen (Paul) Fleming, of Fargo, N.D.; two sons, John (Marcia), of St. Cloud, Minn., and Jim (Holly) of Whiteland, of Indiana. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Jennifer, Amanda, Jaclyn, Ross, Reed, Aaron, Amber, Michael, Claire, Hannah and Sarah; a sister-in-law, Mildred Christian, of Kent, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a daughter, Karla Shirley was born on May 21, 1929, in Missoula, Mont., the daughter of Robert and Alice Kermeen Christian who were immigrants from the Isle of Man. She married John “Jack” Bennett on June 5, 1949, in Spokane, Wash. He died in 1982. Shirley worked for several years at Nash Finch and helped her husband in his veterinary practice. Shirley was a member of the P.E.O., and Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church. She was a very gracious hostess; enjoyed cooking, sewing and especially the time she spent with her beloved family.

Edith May Johnson
 

Edith May (Farmer) Johnson, 91, passed away surrounded by her family members on May 4, 2011, at the Silvercrest at Deer Creek in Overland Park, Kan. A Celebration of Life will be held in July at the First United Methodist Church in Osage. A private burial will occur at the Osage Cemetery.

Edith May Farmer was born on Jan. 7, 1920, in Fairfield, to Samuel and Mertie (Sears) Farmer.

She grew up on the family farm and attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse. In 1937, she graduated from Fairfield High School and attended Parsons College for two years. She then went to Iowa State College in Ames and graduated in 1942. Following college she moved to Osage to become the Mitchell County Extension Home Economist.

On Nov. 19, 1944, May married James Claire Johnson at the Congregational Church in Osage. They farmed in Union Township for 28 years. They were both members of the Union Presbyterian Church and subsequently the United Methodist Churches in St. Ansgar and Osage where she was UMW President. Claire’s Norwegian heritage was celebrated through their involvement in Sons of Norway and she served as president of the local chapter. Claire preceded her in death in October 2001.

May was asked to return to the position of Iowa State University Extension Home Economist and later became the Extension 4-H and Youth Agent for Mitchell and Floyd Counties retiring in 1980. Her professional recognitions include Honorary 4-H Club Member 20 years service, Citation for Distinguished Service to 4-H on the behalf of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents 1975, The R. K. Bliss Extension Citation in recognition of outstanding educational leadership in Extension 4-H and Youth Programs 1976, and induction into the Centennial Class Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame for Outstanding Service and Dedication to 4-H in 2002.

May Johnson was a talented seamstress, needle worker and cook. She made her own and her young children’s clothing plus curtains and draperies and was known for her yeast breads and pies. In retirement she completed several hand stitched quilts and made counted cross stitch and hardanger items which are proudly displayed in her children’s homes. Gardening and playing golf were outdoor activities she enjoyed. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her membership in the Shakespearean Study Club.

Survivors include four children Pamela (Herbert) Haack, of Rochester, Minn.; Mary Lynn Johnson (Denise Robertson), of Spokane, Wash.; Lee (Janelle) Johnson, of Overland Park, Kan.; Lu Johnson, of Apple Valley, Minn..; and five grandchildren: Natalie Haack, of San Diego, Calif.; Leah (John) Deane, of Goodyear, Ariz.; Renee Johnson, of Alpharetta, Ga.; Adam Johnson, of New Orleans, La.; and Todd Johnson, of La Jolla, Calif.; and two step great-grandchildren Samantha and Andrew Deane. Her sister and brother-inlaw, Mary and Harry Fay, of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; sister-in-law, Helen Johnson, of Osage; and four nieces and one nephew also survive.

Evelyn M. Zierath

Evelyn M. Zierath, 94, of Charles City died peacefully with her family at her side, Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Evelyn Zierath will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Wesleyan Church. Pastor Dennis Bachman will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Rockford.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Evelyn Mae Buckner Zierath was born Feb.

19, 1917, at Rudd, the daughter of Clarence and Mary (Langman) Buckner. She received her education from the Prairie Center country school and Rockford High School. On July 20, 1940, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Zierath at Charles City. To this union one son, Robert was born. Lloyd died in December of 1967. Over the years, Evelyn worked at Hoover Hatchery, C & J Restaurant and Bergos Department Store. For 10 years she participated in the Foster Grandparent Program and was named Grandma of the Year in 2007. She enjoyed coloring, putting puzzles together, playing dice and Bingo and writing to her family. Cooking and baking were also important with pies and “baked beans” being her specialty. Evelyn was a member of the First Wesleyan Church and served in various positions in the church. She was an inspiration to her family and to all who knew her. As a prayer warrior she will be remembered as one who had a “direct line to heaven” as she prayed continuously for her family and friends.

Living family members include a son, Robert (Peggy) Zierath, of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters, Sondra Dunham and Candace Zierath; two great-grandchildren, Whitney Readshaw and Courtney (Jeff) Weng; a brother, Chester (Mary) Buckner, of Reed Springs, Mo.; and two sisters, Joyce (Rolland) Cook and Carol (John) Miller, both of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and four sisters, Rose Ryan, Margaret Nauman, Ruby Phillips and Virginia Buckner in infancy.

Alice A. Scharlau

Alice A. Scharlau, 70, of Mason City, died Friday, March 11, 2011, at the Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission, Texas. She and her husband, Lynn Scharlau, long time Mason City business owners, were wintering in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas. In accordance with her wishes, Alice was cremated.

Irene Stohr, 88, of El Cajon, Calif., formerly of Charles City, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at Grossmont Hospital in Le Mesa, Calif.

Funeral services for Irene Stohr will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Irene Heckman Stohr was born April 11, 1923, at Shell Rock, the daughter of Harry and Myrtle (Dearth) Heckman. She graduated from Cedar Rapids and Iowa Business College. On Aug. 8, 1943, she was united in marriage to Richard Stohr at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. While living in Charles City she was employed at Northwestern Bell Company and Salsbury Laboratories and after moving to El Cajon she worked at Carpenter Technology. She was a very active member of the First Lutheran Church and held various positions in the church.

Living family members include a daughter, Sharon (Martin) Vance, of Bella Vista, Ark.; a son, Richard (Ellen) Stohr, Jr., of Big Bear City, Calif.; two grandsons, Martin Vance, Jr. and Joseph Vance; a granddaughter, Michelle Stohr, and a great-granddaughter, Shelby Stohr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother and three sisters.

Marjorie Kuker

 

READLYN — Marjorie Kuker, 81, of Sumner, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2011, in Sumner after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Readlyn, with Pastor Roger Sterle presiding. Burial will follow in St.

Paul’s Cemetery, rural Readlyn. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Readlyn and an hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Marjorie was born March 15, 1930, the daughter of Cecil J. and Gladys (Harris) Morris at the home in rural Sumner. She was baptized on June 9, 1942 at home and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. Marg attended school in Tripoli and graduated from Tripoli high school in 1947. Following her education, she worked at Carnation and Nash Finch. On May 23, 1954, she was united in marriage to Wilbert “Bill” Kuker at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. After their marriage the couple farmed 3 miles west of Readlyn where she also raised their family. In the mid 1980’s Marg began selling Life Insurance for Ozark National until her retirement in 2004. In 1995, the couple moved into Sumner, where she lived until the time of her death.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Readlyn and Culture Club of Sumner. Marg enjoyed dancing, fishing, camping, traveling and spending time with her family.

Survivors are her four sons, Richard (Beverly) Kuker, of Sumner, Calvin (Jean) Kuker, of Tripoli, Dennis (Lynn) Kuker, of Readlyn, and Alan Kuker and significant other, Marnita Gerhardt, of Urbana; a daughter, Linda (Mark) Davis, of Charles City; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and nine stepgreat- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill on Feb. 18, 2002; two daughters, Karen and Joyce; and by a brother, Eugene Ginther.

Kadyn was born on Sept. 21, 2003, Phoenix, Ariz., the daughter of Matthew M. Kellogg and Kari L. Halverson.

Kadyn was presently attending Northwood-Kensett Elementary School where she was a student in the first grade.

Kadyn enjoyed listening to music (Black Eyed Peas and Hannah Montana), watching TV (especially Sponge Bob and I Carly), playing softball, soccer, camping, fishing, roller skating, bowling, swimming, attending school, bicycling, and loved flowers. Kadyn loved playing with her brother Kyler and her many cousins. Kadyn was an extremely loving and caring little girl bringing smiles and joy to all. Dean A. Rivers, 84, of Oelwein, formerly of Floyd, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at Grandview Health Care Center in Oelwein.

Funeral services for Dean Rivers will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Paul Fohs of Saint John Lutheran Church at Arlington will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Dean Alfred Rivers was born July 1, 1926, in Mitchell County, the son of Alfred and Myrtie (Dawley) Rivers. He attended Charles City High School. On June 1, 1944, he was united in marriage to Rita Hagarty and they later divorced. Dean married Ruby Larson on March 21, 2008. Over the years he worked in construction, farmed and was employed at Salsbury Laboratories. His interests included dancing, singing and playing the piano. He will be remembered as a great whistler and one who enjoyed mowing grass and blowing snow.

Living family members include his wife, Ruby Rivers, of Oelwein; six children, Ronald Rivers, of Nashua, Edna Rivers, of Winthrop, Gerald (Sue) Rivers, of Kiel, Wis., Roger Hagarty, of Seattle, Wash., Kenneth Rivers, of What Cheer, and Teresa Rivers, of Waverly; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-greatgrandchildren; five step-children, Mardelle (Leon) Streicher, of Lamont, Roger (Mario) West, of Unionville, Mo., Diane Smith, of Lamont, Sheryl (Randy) Sherman, of Maynard, and Larry (Annette) West, of West Union; 13 step-grandchildren and 25 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Unis Hughes, of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

OSAGE — Dave Butner, 37, of Charles City and formerly of Osage, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Rev. John Moser officiating. Dave was born July 18, 1973, in Omaha, Neb., to Lloyd and Kathlene (Meyers) Butner. He spent his youth growing up in Lockridge, Olds and Osage in Iowa. He was united in marriage to Shelly Winterink on March 25, 1995, in Osage. To this union, two children were born, Christopher and Michaela. They were later divorced. Dave later became a father to Jillian and Shelby through other relationships. He loved fishing with his children, spending time outdoors, bicycling with his brother-in-law, Joe, and spending time with his friends. He also enjoyed listening to music and was an avid fan of the Fighting Irish.

Dave is survived by three daughters, Michaela Butner, of Charles City, Jillian Butner, of Osage, and Shelby Yanzer, of Osage; one son, Christopher Butner, of Charles City; his mother, Kathy Butner (Robert) Wogstad, of May City; his sister, Lorrinda (Joe) Kisley, of Osage; the children that Dave thought of as his own, Lilly, Olivia and Elizabeth Lickteig; and numerous aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Butner; paternal grandmother, Norma Jean Butner; maternal grandmother, Lillian Hooten; and maternal grandfather, Edward O’Brian.

Carol Winnifred Woelfer was born on Oct. 28, 1914, in rural Rockford, the eldest daughter of Erwin and Nellie (Smith) Woelfer. She received her education in the Rockford area and graduated from Rockford High School in 1932. She taught two years in rural schools. She was united in marriage to Wayne Parcher on June 12, 1935. They farmed for five years in the Greene area before purchasing a farm southwest of Rockford. In 1971 they moved into Rockford. Wayne passed away on Jan. 31, 1995. Carol continued living in Rockford until November 2009 when she moved into the Nora Springs Care Center.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Rockford. Carol was a member of Eastern Star, Esser Ladies Aid, the Rockford Women’s Club and the “Sisters Club.” She loved the farm life and especially liked to take care of her chickens and tend the garden. She liked to knit and was an avid reader. Carol and Wayne enjoyed traveling and had visited all 50 states plus a trip to Europe. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Dennis (Kathy Mullen), of Rockford, Morris (Leona), of Rockford, Dick (Cheryl), of Elkhorn, Neb., and Jill (Gene) Schlueter, of Willmar, Minn.; sister, Betty Schwarck, of Charles City; brother-in-law, Donald Parcher, of Rockford; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a greatgreat- grandson, nieces, nephews and other extended family.

The remains of Fredrick B. Thiel (1910-2008) will be interred at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 22.

Born in Le Mars, Fred Thiel was the youngest son of Friedrich Heinrich Thiel, a prominent German Methodist minister active in Floyd County and elsewhere at the turn of the 20th century. A brief ceremony will be in German and English.

Clarence F. Prange, 92, of Charles City, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls.

Clarence Frank Prange was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Butler County, the son of Fred and Alma (Constien) Prange. He attended rural school and then helped his dad on the family farm. In 1940 he graduated from Reppert’s School of Auctioneering in Decatur, Ind. Shortly after that he enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard various warships during World War II. He was discharged in November of 1945 and returned to Iowa. On April 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lucille DeBower at Vilmar and relocated to Charles City where he remained until 2006. Clarence was an auctioneer for 54 years, a profession he truly enjoyed and was inducted into the Auctioneer’s Hall of Fame. He was a member of the State and National Auctioneer’s Association and was always willing to donate his services for community events. Clarence was also a member of the American Legion and served in the Charles City Ceremonial Unit for many years. He took great pride in his Appaloosa horses which he raised and showed for more than 50 years.

Living family members include a daughter, Mavis Prange, of Minneapolis; two grandchildren, Josh (Suzzanna) Dell and Martha Dell; four great-granddaughters; a brother, Cliff (Darline) Prange, of Ames; and a sister, Lorene St. John, of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 1992; and two daughters, infant Karen Prange in in 1958 and Eunice Dell in 2008. Memorials may be directed to the family or charity of choice.

GREENE — Funeral Mass for Rose Delores Wihlm, 86, of Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 23, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Rev.

Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Roseville.

A visitation was held Sunday, May 22, at the St.

Mary Catholic School in Roseville with a Rosary Service and Scriptural Wake at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the school one hour before services Monday.

Rose Delores Esser was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Cartersville, Cerro Gordo County, the daughter of William D. and Lena (Backer) Esser and died Friday, May 20, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. Rose grew up on a farm near Rockford and graduated from the country school near their farm. Rose worked as a hired hand on the Hitzhusen Farm at Marble Rock.

Rose was united in marriage to Alphonse Eugene Wihlm on Oct. 12, 1943, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Carterville. This union was blessed with 11 children.

Rose and Alphonse started farming in March 1947 east of Dougherty and farmed over the years in Dougherty, Rockford, Marble Rock, Greene, and the Roseville area.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene and Roseville and a member of her lady’s circle serving as president and vice president at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene.

Rose enjoyed working along side her husband, Alphonse, on the farm. She loved to spend time with her family and grandchildren, fishing in Canada, playing cards, and watching soaps on TV. Attending all her grandchildren’s sporting events was especially important to her.

On May 17, 1938, Paul was united in marriage to Helen Galing at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. The couple farmed in the Deerfield area all of their married life until retiring and moving to Alta Vista in 1974. In 2008, Paul moved to New Hampton. He enjoyed playing cards, taking his grandchildren fishing, reading, farming and family gatherings. Paul was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church where he was a Trustee. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight, the Catholic Order of Foresters, as well as a member of the Alta Vista Farmers Creamery Board.

Paul is survived by his children, Francis (Rosy) Geerts, LeRoy (Mary Lee) Geerts, James (Linda) Geerts, all of Charles City, Vincent (Diane) Geerts, of Emmetsburg, Mary Ann (Stanley) Trask and Leonard (Diane) Geerts, both of New Hampton; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his brother, Daniel (Coletta) Geerts, of New Hampton; his sisters, Ruth Kruth, of Evansdale, Mabel Geerts, of Elma, and Monica (Virgil) Marvin, of Alta Vista; two sisters-in-law, Monica Geerts and Joanna Geerts, both of New Hampton, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Helen on July 9, 1994; his grandson, Roger Geerts; his brothers, Louis, Andrew and Elmer; his brother-in-law, Everet Kruth and sister-in-law, Katherine Geerts.

Linda K. Cox-Hickman

ELMA — Linda K. Cox-Hickman, 63, of Fall River, Wis., formerly of Charles City, died Thursday, May 19, 2011. at her home in Fall River.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, May 24, at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City with Msgr. Stanley Hayek celebrating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. with a 4:30 p.m.

Linda Kay Hickman was born on Sept. 22, 1947, to Virgil and Betty (Muetz) Cox in New Hampton. Linda attended school in Colwell and graduated from Charles City High School in 1965. She attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Linda was then employed by Winnebago Industries for several years on the assembly line. She moved to Salinas, Calif., where she was employed by Bell Telephone. On Aug. 26, 1979, Linda was united in marriage to Jim Hickman in Prunedale, Calif.. The couple made their home in Moss Landing, Calif.. After Jim’s death on Nov. 25, 2000, Linda moved to her present home in Fall River, Wis.. She enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking and spoiling her grandson, Charlie.

Linda is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Chuck) Kayser; grandson, Charles Kayser, all of Fall River; her brothers, Larry (Sandy) Cox, Robert Cox, both of New Hampton, and Mike Cox, of Charles City; her sisters, Patty (Al) Good, of Forest City, and Ginger (Jim) Darr, of Red Wing, Minn., along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Jim in 2000, brother Donald, and her sister, Elizabeth.

MASON CITY – Cynthia K. (Allison) Perkins, 46, of Mason City, went to be with her Savior on Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Muse Norris Inpatient Hospice Unit in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Sara J. Kelly

Sara J. Kelly, 64, of Marble Rock, passed away peacefully Monday morning, May 23, 2011, at her home after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

A funeral Mass for Sara Kelly will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville. Monsignor Walter Brunkan will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Roseville.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church —Roseville Gymnasium where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue after 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the gymnasium.

Sara Jane Warner was born July 25, 1946, in Charles City, the daughter of Ceo D. and Sadie M. (McMullen) Warner. Growing up in Rockford, she was the eighth of nine children. In 1964, she graduated from Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School. On Oct. 23, 1965, she was united in marriage to Norman Kelly at St. Mary’s Catholic Church — Roseville. Together they made their home on the Kelly family century farm near Marble Rock where they raised their four children. In addition to helping on the farm, Sara also had various other jobs over the years including Marble Rock town librarian, waitress at Clancey’s, Farmers Cooperative and media aide for R-R-MR School for 15 years, retiring in July of 2010. Sara was also a longtime active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville and Rosary Society. Above all, she was devoted to her family and friends and was a very patient and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Sara loved life and some of the things she loved most were family gatherings for birthdays and holidays, hours spent in her large vegetable garden and among her perennial flower beds, watching the many birds that visited her feeders, cross country skiing, reading by herself and to the grandchildren and visiting and traveling with friends or family. Over the years, she was involved in many activities including Hi-Neighbor Club, Cub Scouts, 4-H, bowling league, canoeing and camping. Sara’s family was very important to her and her grandchildren will especially remember her tea parties, sunflower houses, garden “jungle,” and “adventures” including 4-wheeler rides, time at the river and sandpit. She was always ready to try new things and visit new places. It is hard to put into words everything Sara’s life was, but she will be missed greatly.

Living family members include her husband, Norm Kelly, of Marble Rock; four children: Bob Kelly, of Mason City, Mardel (Rod) Brockett, of Reinbeck, Andy (Dr. Corey) Kelly, of Sherrill, and Frank (Mary) Kelly, of Mason City; eight grandchildren: Kelly, Sadie and Paul Brockett, Skyler, Liam and Bryce Kelly and Ryan and Avery Kelly; two sisters, Bethel (Ronald) Ritter, of Charles City, and Ethel Ann Lane, of Frederic, Wis.; four brothers, Allan (Betty) Warner, of Charles City, Charles (Audrey) Warner, of Sheffield, David (Cheryl) Warner, of Greene, and Gary (Virginia) Warner, of Denver; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Gordon and Max Warner.

Elsie R. Gordon

Elsie R. Gordon, 95, of Charles City, died Saturday afternoon, May 21, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elsie Gordon will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m.

until service time Friday.

Elsie Rebecca Holien was born April 1, 1916, on the farm north of Ossian, the youngest of 14 children, to Halver H. and Sire (Sandvik) Holien. She received her education from rural schools. Elsie married Richard Gordon and they later divorced. She is the last of a generation in the Holien family. Elsie was an active member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interests included playing cards, vegetable gardening and canning. Her pride in her family and their Norwegian heritage was evident to anyone who knew her.

Elsie is survived by her former husband, Richard Gordon, of Nashua; a son, LaVern (Rose) Gordon, of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren: Timothy (Dawn) Johnson, Sarah (Ryan) Holdmeyer, Paul (Sarah) Johnson and Christine (Chad Ballagh) Gordon; two greatgrandchildren, Kennedy and Kinley Holdmeyer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Nancy Johnson; a grandson, Neil Gordon; six sisters and seven brothers.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church or a charity of choice.

Joseph William Osborn

Joseph William Osborn, the son of Charles W. and Teresa L. (Bartlett) Osborn was born July 7, 1982 in Fairmont, Minn.

He moved with his parents to Sheldon, Iowa, and attended River Valley Valley Alternative School in Rock Valley. In 1999, when he turned 18, he became a resident of the Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon. Joseph was still living at the Village when he passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the Sanford Health Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., reaching the age of 29 years, 10 months and 14 days.

Joey enjoyed rolling around, laughing, playing jokes, being around people and being outside.

He enjoyed the water, be it either swimming or when he swam with the dolphins.

Joseph is survived by his parents, Chuck and Teresa Osborn, or Elgin, Minn.; and two brothers, Joshua and his wife Shanda Osborn, and their two sons Caden and Quinn, of Harrisburg, S.D., and Mathew Osborn, of Elgin, Minn.; his maternal grandmother Vonna Bartlett, of Eagan, Minn.; paternal grandparents, Barb and Gary Osborn, of Charles City; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother Michael in 2008 and his maternal grandfather, James “Bill” Bartlett, in 2003.

Beulah M. Carson, 104, of Charles City, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
