John Arthur ‘Jack’ Reid

GREENE — Funeral Services for John Arthur Reid, 56, prominent Greene businessman and community leader, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Friday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be scripture service at 7:30 p.m., followed by public Masonic Services conducted by Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. & A.M. of Bristow and Corner Stone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. of Marble Rock. There will be no visitation at the Church.

John Arthur Reid was born Aug. 11, 1954, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, the son of Andrew and Mariette Oline (Einen) Reid and died on Tuesday, June 28, at Allen Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness he courageously fought.

As a child he lived in Madrid, Iowa, where he attended public schools and in August 1961, he and his family moved to Greene where his father purchased the Hamilton Funeral Home. Jack continued his education in the Greene Public Schools and also attended Shattuck Military School in Faribault, Minn. He graduated from the Greene High School in 1972.

Following graduation he worked at the Greene Recorder and attended NIACC. He later moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for a printing company and John B. Turner Mortuary. In 1974, he moved to Minneapolis where he graduated from the Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Graphic Arts and took courses at the University of Minnesota. He then moved to Montana where he was employed by the Yellowstone Enterprises. In November 1976, he returned to Iowa settling in Marble Rock where he was engaged as city clerk. He later was employed by Wells Manufacturing Co. in Marble Rock. During this time he served on the Marble Rock City Council (1979-1984), secretary-treasurer of the Marble Rock Community Fire Company, where he was instrumental in the building of the new fire station and the acquisition of new equipment. He served on the League of Iowa Municipalities Small Cities Advisory Committee, as well as other regional boards and commissions.

He furthered his education at NIACC graduating in 1982, and the following year graduated from the Mid America College of Funeral Service in Jeffersonville, Ind., where he was a member of Pi Sigma Eta Honor Fraternity. He returned to Greene and joined his father in the funeral business.

On Dec. 10, 1983, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Irene (Azbell) Thompson at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. They made their home in Marble Rock until moving to Greene in 1985. Following the death of his father in 1988, Jack purchased Reid’s Funeral Chapel and has operated it until his death.

He served on the Greene City Council (1986-1990), past president of the Greene Development Corp, and Greene Commercial Club. Hs community service has recognized him with the Governors Leadership Award, and he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel. He was recognized in the Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals in 1993.

Jack was a student of local and regional history having published a brief history of Greene. He was a member and contributor to the Marble Rock and Greene Historical Societies. As a pastime, he enjoyed collecting local postcards and other related items, as well as his passion for classic cars. He received much pleasure in the fishing trips up North with his family. Jack enjoyed his trips to Branson, and smaller road trips around the state.

Mr. Reid was baptized at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Madrid on Oct. 3, 1954, and confirmed a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene where he was ordained an Elder on Jan. 12, 1997. He is a member of Cornerstone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. of Marble Rock, Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. & A.M. of Bristow, Research Lodge 2 A.F. & A.M. of Des Moines, Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection, Chapter of Rose Croix, and Consistory in Cedar Rapids, Palestine Council No. 27 Royal and Select Masters, Trowel Chapter No. 49 Royal Arch Masons, Apollo Commandery No. 26 Knights Templar, Noble of the Mystic Shrine-El Kahir Temple Cedar Rapids, Court No. 139 Royal Order of Jesters, Franklin Chapter O.E.S.,Order of DeMolay, Loyal Order of the Moose 1328 of Mason City, Cedar Valley Legion of the Moose, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Marble Rock Lions Club, Marble Rock Community Improvement Assn., Greene Volunteer Fire Department, Greene Community Chorus, Butler County Pheasants Forever and a former member of the Butler County Agricultural Extension Council. He was instrumental in starting the Patriots Day Fourth of July Celebration and served as its chairman for many years.

He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Assn. and served on its Board of Governors and a member of the National Funeral Directors Association. He received the Award of Excellence in Funeral Service from the state association.

Survivors include his loving wife Marilyn, of Greene; one son Kelly James (Shirley) Thompson, of Waterloo; two daughters: Heidi Lynn(Matthew) Buddenberg, of Decorah, and Kathryn Anne (Tyler) Eliason, of Mason City; his grandchildren: Alanna and Kyle Thompson, Emma and Jace Buddenberg, Ander Eliason; his mother: Mariette Reid, of Greene; a sister: Elizabeth (Sam) Lazio, of Davenport; two nephews: Joseph and Mark Lazio, of Chicago, Ill.; one brotherin- law Norman (Teresa) Azbell, of Mason, Ohio; his dedicated staff and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Andrew Reid and his aunt Elizabeth Reid Peterson.

Helen F. Turnbull

CEDAR FALLS — Helen F. Turnbull, 89, of the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls, and formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the care center after a long illness.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Cedar Memorial’s certified celebrant, Julie Freese, will officiate. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Helen was born on July 25, 1921 in Mason City, the daughter of John and Emma Hanzlik Dvorak. She married Roger I. Turnbull on Aug. 20, 1940, in Albert Lea, Minn. He died in 1996. Helen was a beautician and a homemaker. She was member of the First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls and Western Fraternal Life Association of Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers, boating and star gazing. Helen was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her daughter, Judy (Donald) Mussman, of Cedar Falls, and a sister, Rose Conner of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Roger and Sara Mussman, of Charles City, Chad and Angie Mussman, of Grand Island, Neb., Shannon and Teresa Mussman, of Dubuque, Troy Mussman and Bobbi Young, of Waverly, and Ryan and Lisa Mussman, of Grandview, Mo.; 19 greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roger and a brother, Frank Dvorak.

Tim Allen Rowe

Tim Allen Rowe, 53, formerly of Charles City, passed away in Deming, N.M., on Feb. 9, 2011, of natural causes.

He was the son of the late R. Dale and Annabell (Markle Henderson) Rowe and born July 22, 1957, in Charles City. He graduated from Charles City Community High School in 1975.

His path through life was nontraditional, choosing the route of a wanderer. He will be remembered by those who loved him for his free spirit, sense of humor, and love of travel. He enjoyed and excelled at fishing, roller skating, chess, playing the organ, carpentry, pool, and playing cards.

Those thankful to have shared his life include his sister, Carol Rowe, of Charles City, an aunt Jeanne Rowe, of Charles City, aunt and uncle Don and Charlotte Markle, of New Hampton, and numerous cousins and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, stepfather Davis Henderson, niece Jennifer Rogers, grandparents Fred and Bessie Markle and GA and Nellie Rowe.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Viola E. Newton

Viola E. Newton, 92, of Charles City, passed away peacefully with her family close, on Saturday evening, July 2, 2011, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Viola Elisabeth Bergstrom was born June 25, 1919, to Swedish immigrants in St. Cloud, Minn. Her family moved to Charles City from Worthington, Minn. and owned Charles City Granite Works. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1938 and graduated from Waterloo School of Cosmetology. In 1940, she was united in marriage to Fred Newton. Viola worked for Charlie Lentz and Elite Beauty Shop. Vi and Fred owned and operated Band Box Cleaners, a successful cleaning business for more than 50 years. She was an excellent seamstress and accountant for the family business. Viola was first and foremost a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and knitting. She shared her artistic gifts with family and friends. Her hand crafted Christmas ornaments, quilted wall hangings, and quilts as wedding gifts to each grandchild were only few of her many artistic talents. She was an avid bridge player and never missed an opportunity to share her famous apple and blueberry pies and cookies. Viola will long be remembered for her consideration of others before herself. Living family members include her husband of 71 years, Fred; children, John (Jean) Newton, of Charles City, Virginia (Ed) Bakke, of St. Peter, Minn. and Barb (Steve) Gleason, of Charles City; grandchildren, Brian “BJ” (Teresa) Newton, of West Salem, Wis., Lynn (Terry) Bauer, of Charles City, Dustin (Tracy) Bakke, of Princeton, Minn., Sarah (Tom) Joyce, of Seward, Neb., David Bakke and his special friend, Jessi Albrecht, of St. Francis, Minn., Jesse (Erin) Gleason, of Cedar Falls, Ben (Mandy) Gleason, of Ankeny, Beth Gleason and her fiancé, Dean Stone, of Cedar Falls; and 13 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Anna (Johannesen) Bergstrom; sister, Bette in 1940; and brother, Gilbert in 2002. Memorials may be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church or Floyd County Friends of Cancer.

Irene Flora Ingersoll was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Worth County, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Krueger) Ingersoll. On May 5, 1935, she was united in marriage to Harvey Bublitz. Irene worked hard raising her children and helping on the farm. She also helped with the Grafton Newspaper and cooked for the senior citizens in Grafton. She was a very active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. Her interests included quilting, reading, oil painting, writing, crafting and growing flowers. Irene was very devoted to her family and friends and was always willing to help others.

Living family members include her six granddaughters, Dawn (Bob) Gansen, of Elma, Jo (Ron) Dugan, of Floyd, Janice Schmidtke, of Mason City, Connie (Kent) Vrieze, of Floyd, Valerie (Tom) Schrage, of Cedar Falls, and Lisa (Jason) Kvam, of Burnsville, Minn.; grandson Eric (Elinore) Bublitz, of Austin, Minn.; five great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Naomi Ingersoll, of Manly, Leola Wilde, of St. Ansgar and Fay (David) Thompson, of New Mexico; and a brother, William “Bill” (Bernice) Ingersoll, of Grinell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1986; son, Harley Bublitz in 1995; daughter, Gloria Stevenson in 2010; and siblings, Elsie Ingersoll, Everett Ingersoll, Elaine Deets, Wayne Ingersoll and Wilmer “Glenn” Ingersoll; infant brother, Donald Ingersoll and infant sister, Marion Ingersoll.

John Harland Ransom

 

John Harland Ransom, 70, of Oelwein died Tuesday July 5, 2011, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services for John will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, at the Fayette Community Church in Fayette with Pastor Carl Tenney officiating. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. that same day at the church as well. For condolences, please visit www.geilenfeldfh.com.

John was born Feb. 11, 1941 in Charles City, Iowa to parents Harland John and Margaret (Haag) Ransom. He attended several country schools in the Charles City area and graduated from Charles City High School in 1959.

John was united in marriage to Nancy Smith in 1958, they later divorced. In 1978, John was united in marriage to Rebecca McGuinn who passed away in 1994. In 1995, John was united in marriage to Cheryl (Corbin) Carey in Edgewood.

John was a tool and die maker/engineer at Oliver in Charles City for 26 years. He then worked at GMT in Waverly until his health required his retirement.

John loved playing the piano, and was very good at tuning them. He was a member of the Musician’s Union and the Piano Tuners Guild. He played in a traveling gospel group, playing at many nursing homes in the Charles City area. John enjoyed gardening and small engine repair, and generally fixing things up. John especially loved teaching his Sunday School group of teens and reading his Bible. He cherished his time spent traveling with his wife. John will be dearly missed by all who knew, and continue to love him.

Left to celebrate John’s life is his loving wife Cheryl; his children Billy Jo Ransom, Crystal (Tim) Fairlie, Sonja Bosier, and Amber Ransom; his many step-children; his many grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, and great-grandchildren; his brother Richard (Edita) Ransom, his sisters Dixie (Duane) Steele, and Kathy (Jack) Jensen, as well as many friends.

In death, John has rejoined his parents, and his daughter Jewel Ransom.

 




Roland L. Weiss
 

Roland L. Weiss, 73, of Nashua died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua with Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass.

Offertory gifts will be presented by Roland’s grandchildren; Carla Rosenbaum, Sarah Weiss, Megan Weiss, Dallas Weiss, and Paige Franzen.

Honorary pallbearers are grandsons Dustin Weiss, Tyler Sisson, Matt Rosenbaum, Nick Sisson, Logan Sisson, Ethan Franzen, and great grandson Alex Chevchuc.

Friends may greet the family 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 8, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Roland Lavern Carl Weiss was born Feb. 21, 1938, in the Pearl Rock township in rural Chickasaw County on the family farm, the son of Max and Vada (Herzog) Weiss. He attended rural country schools and Nashua High School, graduating in 1957. He worked for Waterloo Concrete after graduation. On May 14, 1960, he was united in marriage to Darlene Flatness at the St. Michael’s Rectory in Nashua. To this union, five children were born. Roland was a farmer, milked cows, and also worked at Hydrotile for 30 years. He retired from farming in 1991, and began working at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton where he was presently employed. He was a member of the saddle club, enjoyed gardening, being around family, and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Darlene; two sons, Carl Weiss, of Clinton, Robin (Shelly) Weiss, of Nashua; three daughters, Deb (Dale) Schwickerath, of New Hampton, Sandy (Clark) Sisson, of Omaha, Neb., Jamee (Phil) Franzen, of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers-in-law, Norman (Monica) Flatness, of Minneapolis, Allen (Cookie) Flatness, of Inwood, W.Va; his mother-in-law, Margaret Flatness, of Northwood; two sisters-inlaw, Geneva Weiss, of Plainfield, Donna (Warren) Fridley, of Northwood.

Marilyn I. Bradley, 82, of Mason City, and formerly of Charles City, died Thursday morning, July 7, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Marilyn Bradley will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Paul M. Schaefer of the Plymouth Bible Baptist Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Marilyn Irene Howes was born March 28, 1929, in Bedford, the daughter, of Dallas and Ethel (Peterson) Howes. She graduated from the Bedford High School. On July 3, 1948, she was united in marriage to Lowell D. Bradley in Bedford. They later divorced. Marilyn cleaned several homes in Charles City, including the Starr Home. Her interests included bingo, music, spending time with her family and fishing with longtime friend, Russ Reckner.

Living family members include her four daughters, Sue (Bob) Crooks, of Mason City, Karen O’Neill, of Santa Clara, Calif., Diana Showalter, of Iowa City, and Deb Marvin, of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Naomi Moore, of Cedar Rapids, Lois Young, of Holstein, Ruth (Orville) Marsh, of Stanton, and Jean Marsh, of Texas; and two brothers, David (Sharon) Howes, of Red Oak, and Richard (Rosela) Howes, of Greenfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Frieden; three sisters, Crystal Ames, Anita Hall and Linda Hull; and three brothers, Dallas Howes, Jr., Benjamin Howes and a stillborn brother.

Charles was born in Chester in 1932. He was the son of Charles E. and Ella (Felper) Stanbro. In 1951, he married his first wife, Helen Lappin. On May 27, 1961, he married his current wife Sandra L. Tibbitts. Charles, known as Chuck to many, worked at Oliver/White Farm from 1951 to 1993. During the last 18 years at White Farm, prior to retirement, he proudly served as the union president for the UAW Local 1315. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, playing golf, spending time with friends (and maybe having a beer or two), collecting coins, Oliver and White Farm model tractors, and various caps. He also enjoyed cheering for the Minnesota Vikings, watching Nascar, and being around his family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and continue to love him.

Living family members include his wife of 50 years, Sandra Stanbro, of Charles City; seven children, Craig (Linda Herrick) Stanbro, of Zumbrota, Minn., Kevin (Joanne) Stanbro, of West Des Moines, Colleen (Bruce) Lien, of Hayword, Minn., Leesa (Barry) Siems, of Bolivar, Mo., Denise (Larry) Hall, of Fair Play, Mo., Michelle (Robert) Marion, of Ionia, and Chuck (Deb) Stanbro, of Tipton; sonin- law, Ron Mitchel of Dothan, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eldest daughter, Melinda Mitchel; and four sisters.

Doris H. Martin, 73, of Charles City, died Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Doris Helen Springer Martin was born February 12, 1938, at home in rural Nashua, the daughter of Amos and Helen (Marovetz) Springer. She graduated from Nashua High School. On Sept. 4, 1957, she was united in marriage to Clayton Martin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. For many years Doris worked as a dispatcher for the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office. She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Her interests included genealogy, fishing, yard work and going to flea markets. Family was important to Doris and she always looked forward to attending any activities that her grandchildren were in.

Living family members include her husband, Clayton Martin, of Charles City; four children, Susan (Mike) Hyland, of Colwell, Shelia (David) Hill, of Urbandale, Clayton Linn Martin, of Charles City and Stacey (Dan) Corrigan, of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Riles, Robert and Kaitlin Hardiman, Taylor Hill, Cassandra, Sara and Jennifer Martin and Nathan and Matthew Corrigan; five sisters, Dorothy (Henry) Mohring, of Ionia, Madonna (Ervin) Mohring, of Charles City, Lorraine (Ralph) Bigelow, of Charles City, Darlene Martens, of New Hampton, and Beverly (Dave) Bray, of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Gennie Springer, of Charles City.

Patricia A. Bode, 67, of Charles City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, July 12, 2011, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

A funeral Mass for Patricia will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3-7 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and Scriptural Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the church on Monday.

Patricia Ann Harker was born Sept. 28, 1943, in Spencer and a few years later, her family moved to Ocheyedan. She attended Ocheyedan schools, graduating in 1961, and continued education at Worthington Junior College and University of Iowa, graduating in 1967 with a degree in social work. On Nov. 13, 1965, she was united in marriage to Allan (Al) Bode at St. Thomas More in Iowa City. She worked as a kindergarten/classroom aide at Washington Elementary, before going to the junior high/middle school and finally the high school as a library assistant with 39 years of service, retiring in 2008. Patricia loved traveling, nature, music and the fine arts, attending basketball and softball games, gardening, cooking and movies, especially foreign films. She enjoyed collecting small boxes from other countries and unusual kaleidoscopes. She visited all but seven states, lived in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1972 as well as accompanied students to Mexico several times. Her greatest love was reading and she always had a book with her on her Kindle in recent times. Patricia served on the Community Concerts Board, Public Library Board and was a long time member of the original Stony Point Players and the Sweet Adelines barbershop group. She was very active in the Iowa State Education association, serving in governance in local, regional and state levels. Education was her main priority.

Living family members include her husband of 45 years, Allan “Al”; two sons, Sean (Patricia), of Mazomanie, Wis., Christopher (Joy), of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Tristan, Marissa, Victoria, Alexandria, and Sophia; two sisters, Elnora (Howard) Baker, of Storm Lake, Pauline (Bob) Zabka, of Swea City, a brother, John, and special friend Donna Evenson, of Dawson, Minn.; mother-in-law, Marjorie Bode, of Algona; two sisters-in-law, Jan (Allen) Christensen, of Iowa City, Alice (Herb) McBride, of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers-in-law, Russell (Maggie) Bode, of Algona, and Philip (Ann) Bode, of Baton Rouge, La., and numerous nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rolland and Cleeata Harker.

William (Bill) Cero
 

 

William (Bill) Cero, 81, of Charles City, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center. A memorial service was held on Friday, June 17, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City with Father Carl Ries officiating. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.

William Joseph Cero was born on July 15, 1929, to Joseph and Jesse Cero in Bassett. He was united in marriage to Margaret Mae DeBettegnies on Aug. 3, 1950, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton. William was employed at White Farm, Inc. from 1954 to 1992. During these years he also did independent painting of homes, residental and rural. William was also an avid “coon” hunter and owned several “top line breed” hunting dogs. Following retirement William enjoyed lawn mowing and spending time with his wife, family and his beloved dog “Eddie” William will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Dad was a man of “few words” but one of “many thoughts.”

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret “Girlie,” children, Mila (Lyle) Bunston and John (Mary) Cero, both of Humboldt, Diane Bilharz, of Nashua, Lori Cero and James Cero, both of Charles City; grandchildren, Brandon and Abby Bunston, Steve Cero, Katie Davis, Christine (Frank) Valenauela, Michelle (Paul) Jones, Michael (Tabatha) Caswell, Cody Bilharz, Maggie Hoy, Amy Cero; and 11 great-grandchildren with two on the way.

William was preceeded in death by has parents, siblings; Charlie, Ted, Dewey, Eddie, Mildred, Anna Mae and his grandson Jesse Cero in 2006.

Brian D. Crane

 

Brian D. Crane, 71, of Charles City, died Sunday afternoon, July 17, 2011, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of Brian’s life will be at a later date. Per Brian’s request, his body was donated to the University of Iowa Hospital for medical research in hopes for a cure for cancer.

Brian Donley Crane was born March 30, 1940, in Glendale, Calif., the son of Delbert V. and Georgia Mae (Sage) Crane. He graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1958 and attended one year at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D. On July 11, 1959, he was united in marriage to Patricia Rogholt.

Brian was a true entrepreneur who enjoyed every aspect of his business life. Brian and Pat established Growth Properties 20 years ago and started their property portfolio. Prior to that Brian spent many years in the printing business dating back to the late 1960s in Rapid City, S.D., and eventually moved to Mason City.

Brian believed in giving back to his communities and served on many boards. Some of which included: NIVC of Mason City, the Mason City YMCA, the original Hospice Board of Finances, KUNI Radio (Cedar Falls), and co-chair of the Republican Party of Floyd County. He became a Mason and a Shriner by age 23.

Brian and Patricia were most proud of the scholarship fund they created for their Alma-Mater in Lake Preston, S.D. They established the LPHS Higher Education Foundation many years ago. Also, Brian was recognized for his involvement with the Charles City Excellence in Education Fund.

Brian’s interests included: playing duplicate bridge (achieving Life Master in 1992), gardening, fishing, cooking, hosting dinner parties for family and friends, music (especially jazz).

Brian had an exceptional sense of humor and memory. Storytelling and jokes were available in any circumstance. He would put a smile on your face with his stories.

Brian loved spending time with his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren any chance he had and loved having family and friends around.

Living family members include his wife, Patricia Crane of Charles City; three daughters, Cheri (Dan) Jaacks, of Toddeville, Melanie Crane, of Charles City and Michelle Crane, of Columbia, Mo.; a sister Linda Crane, of Simi-Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren, Jacob Jaacks, Gram (Jennifer) Short, Brynn Short, Jennifer (Joel) Sommerfield- Sager and Shelby Lyn Crane; four great-grandchildren Oliver, Adrian, Finneas and Addison; two special aunts “the Merdynes”; and many cousins.

Evelyn Irene Berding Johlas was born February 11, 1925, in Cerro Gordo County, the daughter of Gerhardt and Helene (Theilen) Berding. She graduated from Riceville High School. On Feb. 12, 1945, she was united in marriage to Victor Johlas at Riceville. They farmed all their lives south of Charles City. Evelyn was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, church circle, Women of the Moose, Farm Bureau, Heritage Club and the Chat-A-Bit Club. She looked forward to playing bingo, dancing to polka music and going on trips with the Heritage Club.

Living family members include three children: Lyle Johlas of Shell Rock, Glenn (Nancy) Johlas of Charles City and John (Michelle) Johlas of Ogden, Ill; six grandchildren: Heather Johlas, Krystal Johlas, Kimberly ( Brian) Watkins, Karen (Shawn) Szalkowski, Nathan Johlas and Hannah Johlas; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Alexis Watkins; a great-great-grandson, Isaiah Watkins; and a sister, Helen (William) Jorgensen of Sheffield.

Leo J. Lidd, 89, of Charles City, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Leo John Lidd was born Sep. 4, 1921, at Shenandoah, the son of Leo and Mary (Foley) Lidd. He graduated in 1939 from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in Charles City and in 1943 as salutatorian of his Loras College graduating class in Dubuque. Leo proudly served in the United States Navy where at the age of 24 he was one of 15 officers on the combat ship USS Tinsman serving in the Pacific. He retired as a Navy Commander after 27 years of active/ reserve duty. After returning from active duty in 1947 he joined his father and grandfather at Lidd’s Clothing Store in Charles City. On May 29, 1948, he was united in marriage to Helen Christensen at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Leo was very active in the Scouting program, having served as a Scout Leader for over 29 years. He and his sons were all Eagle Scouts. Leo received both the prestigious Saint George’s Award and Silver Beaver Award. Over the years Leo was very active in the community as a city councilman and, also, as a key figure in the urban renewal project following the May 15, 1968, tornado. In 1981 he was named Charles City’s Man of the Year. Leo was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club, Elks Club and Moose Lodge. He was also instrumental in establishing the Little League program and was a coach for several years. His other interests included golfing, traveling, and going on family trips. Family was also important to Leo and he took every opportunity to share his life with them.

Living family members include his wife of 63 years, Helen Lidd, of Charles City; four sons, Bob (Bev) Lidd, of Lafayette, Ind., Tom Lidd and partner Jane Kelly, of Cedar Rapids, Mike (Peg) Lidd, of Charles City, and Steve (Vicki) Lidd, of Irvine, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Paula Lidd; and three sisters, Eleanor Ziegenfuss, Rita Cordray and Marie Lidd in infancy.

Jack Duane Peters

 

KATY, Texas — Jack Duane Peters was born on Dec. 17, 1934, in New Hampton to Juanita and John Peters, and passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2011, of complications from the recurrence of Laryngeal throat cancer.

He married Shirley (Jacobsen) Peters June 18, 1953, giving the couple 58 years together. They moved to Texas in 1981, where they resided in Longview, Texas for five years, and then moved to the Houston area in 1986. Jack suffered Laryngeal throat cancer in 1992. He managed to live a full life until the return of throat cancer this year. He was a quiet man who never complained and was always there for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; one sister, Connie Matheny, of Brownsville, Tenn.; daughters Debbie Hammel, of Charles City, Iowa, Mrs. Robert (Teri) Brown, of Coldspring, Mrs. Gary (Sherry) Singer, of Katy, Ms. Renee Fisher, of Katy, Mrs. Walter (Jacki) Vail, of Beasley, and Ms. Jodi Dukat, of Katy. He leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all loved and respected him, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Special thanks go to the caregivers, doctors and nurses who worked diligently to give him the best quality of life they could.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 25, at the Cross Point Community Church, in Katy, Texas, with Rev. Bill Woolsey officiating.

Ardis was born on June 21, 1926, in Mason City, the daughter of Joseph J. and Gladys A. (Rye) O’Hara. She was raised in Mason City and attended rural schools. She also attended Gates Business College in Waterloo. She was united in marriage to H. Fred Lockwood on March 19, 1943, in Bentonville, Ark. The couple made their home in Charles City, but lived in Cedar Rapids and Albert Lea before moving back to Charles City in 1988. Ardis worked in the city manager’s office in Charles City for several years, and also as a media director for W.D. Lyon Co. in Cedar Rapids.

Ardis was a member of CNB Heritage Club and Messiah Lutheran Church. She enjoyed collecting antiques, Avon and Jim Beam bottles. She took pride in the flowers and vegetables she raised in her garden. Her husband and she liked to travel, both in the United States and Europe. She loved to read and also was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1990; step-daughter, Joan Hannah; two brothers; a sister; two step-brothers and her step-father.

Those left to cherish her memory include her step-children, Robert (Patricia) Lockwood, James (Jan) Lockwood, Dean (Ann) Lockwood and Lee (Tammi) Lockwood; 19 step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; two nieces; three nephews; 10 great nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Gregory Collins, 48, of Charles City, died Thursday, July 21, 2011, at his home.

Memorial services for Gregory Collins will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Beranek will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Gregory John Collins was born Feb. 13, 1963, in La Crosse, Wis., the son of Thomas and Diane (Miller) Collins. He attended Logan High School and then later graduated from Wisconsin Technical College for audio/visual communication. Greg was united in marriage to Kim Brunner at Trinity United Methodist Church on May 26, 2001. To this union four children were born. Greg and Kim lived in Charles City. Greg worked in various positions and was a great fix-it guy, he could fix anything. He worked in the window business for 20 years for Andersen and later Simonton Windows. Greg was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and truly enjoyed playing in the Damascus Road band. He liked music of all kinds and loved playing his guitars and writing songs with the kids. Greg liked to ride his motorcycle. He loved to visit with people and was always there to lend a hand.

Greg is survived by his wife Kim Collins, of Charles City; four children; Caden, 8, Ian, 7, Keely, 5 and Edie, 2; his mother, Diane Collins of La Crosse, Wis.; six siblings: Danny (Robin) Collins, of Madison, Wis., Kathleen (Al Poser) Collins, of Stoddard, Wis., Debra Litsheim, Shaun Collins, and Kevin Collins, all of La Crosse, Wis., and Michael (Norman) Collins, of Madison, Wis.; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

OELWEIN — Heinz O. Lehs, 90, of Oelwein, died Thursday evening, July 21, 2011, at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein.

Heinz Oscar Lehs was born on Nov. 18, 1920, at Spekendorf, Germany, the son of Stanley and Anna Wilhelmina (Wessels) Lehs. Heinz was an Army veteran of WWII, serving from Oct. 7, 1942, to Jan. 4, 1946, including service in the South Pacific. Heinz was united in marriage to Arlene Marie Koelling on March 4, 1951, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate by the Rev. Otto C. Schultz. Heinz and his family moved from rural Maynard to rural Fayette in February of 1956 where Heinz farmed, raised his six children and lived his American dream. He thoroughly enjoyed wintering in Texas and spending quality time with his family and friends.

Heinz is survived by his wife, Arlene Lehs, of Oelwein; five children: Brenda (Carl) Heth, of Rolla, Mo., Marilyn (Ron) Venz, of Charles City, Thomas (Tina) Lehs, of Fayette, Dean (Cindy) Lehs, of Clear Lake, and Julia Wilson (friend: Dave Gerner), of Guttenberg;10 grandchildren and one step-grandson; nine great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Ruth) Lehs, of Winthrop; three sisters: Gerda (Rev. Al) Hock, of Strawberry Point, Wilma Keppler, of Oelwein, and Mary Ann Knight, of Oelwein; a sister- in-law: Lois Lehs, of Fayette; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry; three brothers: Paul, Martin and Randolph; and a son-in-law, Tony Scheckel.

Denny Bouillon

Denny Bouillon, 64, of rural Ionia, died Friday, July 22, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, July 26, at St. John United Church of Christ-Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua with Rev. Linda Myren presiding.

Interment will be in the church cemetery with Rod Hanawalt, Brody Bouillon, Rick Deutsch, Mike Bigley, Rich Greenlee and Austin Gavello serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Dunbar, Cordell Martin, Dave Bucknell and Jim Klunder. Military interment rights will be conducted by the Ralph Nicholson Nashua VFW Post No. 6792.

Friends may greet the family 4-7 p.m. Monday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the funeral at the church on Tuesday. Online condolences for Denny’s family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com Denny Ransom Bouillon was born Jan. 2, 1947, in Charles City, the son of Ransom and Jennie (Janssen) Bouillon. He received his education in Charles City. In 1964, after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1967 and joined the Navy Reserves until 1970. Following the Navy reserves, Denny served in the National Guard until 1974.

In May of 1966 in San Diego, Calif., he married Dorothy Shipley. To this union three children were born. The couple later divorced. On Aug. 21, 1970, in Charles City, he married Connie Vetter. To this union two sons were born. Denny worked at Hydrotile from 1968-1973 and joined Terex Crane from 1978 until 2008, retiring after 30 years.. He also worked for North Iowa Fabrication in Rockford, from March until December of 2008.

Denny had been the Local 411 President, the recording secretary for North Central CAP, enjoyed chuck-wagon racing, golf, pool league, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Connie; five children, Cindy (Tom) Gavello, of Livermore, Calif., Kevin Bouillon, of Brentwood, Calif., Steve (Carrie) Bouillon, of Kansas City, Mo., Randy “Rudy” (Jenny) Bouillon, of New Hampton, and Brandon (Christina) of Nashua; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Joyce (Cal) Wood, of Ionia; Joann (Darrell) Schmidt, of Charles City, Mary (Bill) Mooberry, of Charles City, and Kandi (Duane) Eddy, of Nashua; two brothers, Jerry (Marilyn) Bouillon, of Greene, and Louie (Barb) Bouillon, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife’s parents, Arnold and Irene Vetter.

Leon G. Hansen

 

 

Leon G. Hansen, 59, of Charles City, died Monday, July 25, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Leon Hansen will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m.

Thursday at the funeral home.

Leon Gilbert Hansen was born May 18, 1952, at Osage, the son of Harvey G. and Velora Rose (McFarland) Hansen. His interests included riding bikes, his nieces, nephews and all children.

Living family members include his six siblings, Linda (Geno) LaChapelle, of St. Ansgar, Veleta Musehund, of Wesley, Donna Bruggeman, of Plymouth, Carrie (Albert) Leeman, of Valga, S.D., Ed (Wendy) Hansen, of St. Ansgar and Ira Hansen of Pella; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; parents; brother, Terry Hansen; and sister, Loree Hansen.

Kenneth W. Olmsted

Kenneth Wilbur Olmsted, 75, of Charles City, passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 20, 2011. A memorial service and burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date.

The son of Dorothy Louise (Kelley) and Henry Olmsted Sr., Kenneth was born May 25, 1936, in Charles City. His twin brother Keith died in infancy. Kenneth graduated from Charles City High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps before returning to Charles City. He was employed at the White Farm tractor plant in town and later at Salsbury Chemicals prior to his retirement in 2001.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, Kenneth was also proud of the fact that he participated in 27 different RAG-BRAI tours across the state of Iowa.

Living family members include a sister, Grace Yamaguchi, of San Francisco, Calif.; and two brothers, Donald Olmsted, of Rochester, Ind., and James Olmsted, of Colwell. He also has a sister-in-law, Grace Olmsted, living in Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Henry Jr., Eldon, John and Robert.

Neale T. Praska

EL PASO, Texas — CSM Neale T. Praska (RET), formerly of Charles City, passed away a hero on July 14, 2011. He will be remembered as a true patriot to his country and especially to his family and friends. He served 26 years in the U.S. Army including wartime service in Korea and Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, MSM, AIR M-2 through 4th Award, AR COM w/OLC Good Conduct W8 Loops, occupation Germany and Japan, NAT DEF w/OLC, Korean SV MED 3 stars, Vietnam SV Medal 1 Star, UN SV Medal, Rep. of VN w/ Device. He was a lifetime member of the SGM Association.

Neale was born July 18, 1931, in Cedar Falls and grew up in Charles City.

His family loved him and are very proud of him and he will be missed very much. He is survived by his wife Gloria of 59 years; his daughters Deborah Praska and Lori (Perry) Nicholson; grandchildren Karyn (Joseph) Dillon, Jennifer Kitka and Josh Nicholson; greatgrandchildren Emily Nicholson and Zadyn Dillon.

Preceeding him in death were his parents, Stella (Umess) and William P. Praska, as well as his step-father Sam Tgiros.

A graveside service was held July 19 at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, where he was laid to rest with full military honors. The family wishes to thank the William Beaumont ICU doctors and staff for their care, support and kind words.
