Merna Marie Teeple

 

 

GREENE — Funeral Mass for Merna Marie Teeple, 94, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev.

Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., Aug. 3, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. There will be a 7:30 p.m. Rosary Service.

Merna Marie Teeple was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Mike and Anna (Heinz) Brunner and died Sunday, July 31, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She received her education in the public schools graduating from Marble Rock High School in 1934. Merna was united in marriage to Clarence Teeple on Oct. 12, 1938, to this union were blessed two daughters. Clarence died Feb. 7, 1984.

Merna is survived by two daughters, Dorene (Norman) Pierce of Cedar Falls and Janet Garrison of Norwalk; four grandchildren: Scott, Jason, Mike and Teresa; 10 great-grandchildren and two greatgreat- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, Bradley Pierce; four brothers: Nick, Bob, Orville, Merlyn; and three sisters: Phyllis Craig, Betty Stanbrough and Marie Ackley.

Evelyn M. Mrachek

Evelyn M. Mrachek, 90, of Charles City, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Evelyn Mrachek will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday where the Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Evelyn Marie Triska Mrachek was born March 13, 1921, in Winneshiek County, the daughter of Albert and Rose (Havel) Triska. She attended school at Spillville. On Nov. 18, 1941, she was united in marriage to Clarence Mrachek. They moved to Charles City in 1966. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Her interests included attending auctions, playing bingo and cards, listening to polka music, gardening and collecting salt and pepper shakers. They always looked forward to the annual Salsbury Chemical picnics where there was always plenty of food, fellowship and fun and also the Czech Days in Protivin. Evelyn will always be remembered as a woman of faith to whom morning prayers and the Rosary were very important.

Living family members include her daughter, Sharon (Hal Miller) Heise, of Ionia; four grandchildren, Michael (DeAnne) Mrachek, Sunday (Nathan) Tostenson, Jolene (Travis) Bilharz and Janel (Travis) Jones; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan Mrachek, Alysha Bilharz, Mackenzy Bilharz, Katlyn Mrachek, Jacob Mrachek, Kaleb Bilharz, Megan Tostenson and Abby Tostenson; and two daughtersin- law, Connie Mrachek, of Charles City, and Carol Mrachek-Sawyer, of Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Aug. 31, 1997; twin sons, Jerry and Larry Mrachek; a grandson, Ricky Mrachek; a brother, Leonard Triska; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Kostka.

Dean E. Sogard

 

Dean E. Sogard, 81, of Ames, passed away on June 9, 2011. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 3 p.m. at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City, and will be followed by a celebration of life at the American Legion Post 174 in Charles City. Casual attire preferred.

Dean Sogard was born July 17, 1929, in Clear Lake to Marvin and Genevieve Sogard. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1948. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and remained active in the Air Force reserves for a total of 28 years. He married Betty Mayfield on Aug. 21, 1955. Dean completed a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University in 1958. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Atlantic and as an assistant engineer for Floyd County before joining the Federal Highway Administration as a civil engineer where he retired after 33 years. After retiring he worked part-time with his favorite material, concrete, as estimator for Stenberg Concrete in Ames.

Maxine Ebel

Maxine Ebel, 69, of Toledo, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Maxine Lucille (Lockie) Ebel was born on Feb. 26, 1942, on a farm three miles west of Floyd, to Robert and Nellie (Shorey) Lockie. She was united in marriage to William Jr. Shafer on Jan. 31, 1960. They were later divorced and she married Lee Ebel on July 22, 1969. She raised five boys of her own and her niece.

Maxine enjoyed playing card games of all types and went in for the kill when she did. She also liked to sew and play games on the computer. Most of all, she loved her family and was a stalwart at helping with the family reunion every year. She always had a smile on her face that could cheer up anybody. It was always a pleasure to see her.

She leaves behind her husband, Lee Ebel, of Toledo; three sons, Dennis Shafer, of Michigan, William Shafer, of Mason City, and Jack Ebel of Manly; daughter, Rachel (B.J.) Halterman, of Des Moines; three sisters, Shirley Decker of Floyd, Jean Underwood, of Peru, Ind., and Sandra Burd, of Mason City; brother, Delbert (Judy) Lockie, of Cameron, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert; and two sons, Douglas Shafer in 2007 and James Ebel in 2010.

Lloyd Stanley ‘Stub’ Starr

NAUVOO, Ill. — Lloyd Stanley “Stub” Starr passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011, in his home after a short battle with cancer.

Lloyd was born on Dec. 30, 1930, in Keokuk, Iowa, to S. Cleophus and Florence (Bolton) Starr.

On Dec. 29, 1957, he married Virginia Belle Elkins in Knox City, Mo., after being introduced by Lee and Carmen Ourth on a blind date. In 1948, Lloyd graduated from Hamilton High School where he served as Vice President of his class. He served the United States Marine Corps in Korea from Nov. 27, 1951, until his honorable discharge on Nov. 20, 1953.

After his service, Lloyd and Virginia returned to beautiful and historic Nauvoo and opened Starr’s Garage, which constituted a large part of the family’s life for over 50 years. As a business owner and volunteer, Lloyd was active in many clubs and organizations including the Nauvoo Fire Department as Chief and Trustee, Nauvoo Chamber of Commerce, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, American Legion, VFW, Nauvoo Historical Society, Sonora Homecomers and Hancock County Theatre Group.

Lloyd and his family supported the Nauvoo Grape Festival for years with his children participating as Pet Parade King and Queen and Bride and Groom and he was instrumental in the creation of the Sunday Feature Parade and arranged for the famous Anheuser Busch Clydesdales to take part in the Parade. He received various awards in his lifetime including the Nauvoo Historical Society “Citizen of the Year” and the Nauvoo Chamber of Commerce “Spirit of 1776” Award.

Survivors include his wife Virginia Starr, children Jean Starr and her fiancée Vince Seaver, of Nauvoo and Hamilton, Keith and Joanne (Stoen) Starr, of Charles City, Iowa, Linda Starr of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Neal and Martha (Starr) Miller, of Franklin, Tenn. Also surviving are Lloyd’s brothers Lester (and the late Shirley) Starr and Dean and Marjorie Starr, all from Hamilton, and Harold and Joyce Starr, of Carthage, and his sister-in-law Betsy Wharton, of Monticello. Lloyd is further survived by his three grandchildren, Stephen, Robert and Emily Starr of Charles City, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews and trusted friends Tom and Arlee Dowell, of Nauvoo, and, of course, his faithful golden retriever and walking partner, Gracie.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, at the Nauvoo United Methodist Church in Nauvoo with the family meeting friends from 4-7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at the Nauvoo United Methodist Church in Nauvoo with Pastor Randy Azbell and Pastor Mark Anderson officiating.

Burial with full military rites by the Nauvoo American Legion will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in rural Hamilton, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, suggested memorials would be to the Nauvoo Fire Protection District and the Nauvoo United Methodist Church.

Ercyl E. Keeling

 

Ercyl E. Keeling, 89, of Charles City, died Monday morning, Aug. 8, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Ercyl Keeling will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley J.

Hayek of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City with Military Honors by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ercyl Edward Keeling was born May 7, 1922, in Bosworth, Mo., the son of Ola J. and Nellie Frances (Pancoast) Keeling. He attended school in Keytesville, Mo. From Oct. 20, 1942, to Nov. 6, 1945, Ercyl served in the United States Army. On Dec. 5, 1943, he was united in marriage to Ruth Merfeld at Camp Adair, in Corvallis, Ore. Ercyl was employed at White Farm for 28 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, VFW and General Society of the Mayflower Descendants. He enjoyed cars, boating, fishing, hunting and raising hybrid roses.

Living family members include his wife, Ruth Keeling, of Charles City; four children: Denise (Marvin) Bates, of Evansville, Ind., Linda Dannan, of Manchester, Mo., David Keeling, of Davenport, and Mark Keeling, of Comanche; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Keeling, of Olathe, Kan., and Ralph (Sammy Jo) Keeling, of Independence, Mo.; and a sister, Dixie (Daley) Walker, of Parkville, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Clark Keeling.

Neil K. Vest, 53, of Northwood, died Thursday morning, August 11, 2011, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Neil Kent Vest was born March 20, 1958, in Marshalltown, the son of Robert L. and Lola Evangeline (Brown) Vest. In 1976, he graduated from the Charles City High School. Neil was an over-the-road truck driver all of his life and spent the last 15 years driving for Norsemen Trucking. His interests included camping, bowling, the outdoors and working on his son’s cars.

Living family members include his fiancée Terri Hearn of Northwood; two sons, Ryan Vest and Dillon Vest, both of Nashua; parents, Robert and Lola Vest, of Charles City; two brothers, Mike (Angie) Vest, of Indianola, and Kevin Vest, of Bayard, N.M.; and one sister, Lori (Jeff) Shook, of Tripoli.

Theodore G. Schmidt,

MARBLE ROCK — Funeral Services for Theodore G. Schmidt, 89, of Marble Rock, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock with Chaplin David Byrd officiating. Burial will be in the Rockford Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m until service time.

Theodore George Schmidt was born on April 4, 1922, in rural Marble Rock, Floyd County, the son of Fred and Mabel (Boom) Schmidt and died July 28, at his home in Marble Rock.

He received his education in the rural schools of Marble Rock. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Army. Following an honorable discharge he joined a thrashing team and worked throughout the Midwest. He also worked at the Rockford Hemp Plant until the end of the war. Teddy returned to Marble Rock to farm the family farm where he remained until 2005 when he moved into town.

Teddy enjoyed dancing, the outdoors, the changing of the seasons especially when everything turned green in Spring, and lived by the moon. He was a people person who especially enjoyed his friends and neighbors.

He was a member of the VFW both in Greene and Marble Rock. Teddy is survived by special friends Jon and Rhonda Sult, Dustin Sult and Dena Sult, a few cousins and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Petty Officer Jon T. Tumilson

 

 

Petty Officer Jon T. Tumilson, 35, a native of Rockford, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, while conducting special operations combat in Afghanistan. He was born July 1, 1976, at Osage.

He joined the U.S. Navy on July 17, 1995, following graduation from the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School. He graduated from Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., in September 1995. He completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL School, Coronado, Calif., in April 2002. He served in three west-coast based Special Warfare units and in two east-coast based Special Warfare units.

Petty Officer Tumilson’s was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Defense Meritorious Service Medal. His other awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, and Rifle Expert and Pistol Expert Medals.

He deployed on multiple deployments to include Afghanistan and Iraq.

He is survived by his parents, George and Kathleen Tumilson, of Rockford; two sisters, Kristie Pohlman (Brad Hartgraves), of Cedar Rapids and Joy (Scott) McMeekan, of Taylor Ridge, Ill; six nieces and nephews: Kobey Pohlman, Kamryn Pohlman, Kelsi McMeekan, Kaitlyn Pohlman, Sydney McMeekan, Isabella McMeekan; 21 aunts, uncles and cousins; and his trusted canine friend, Hawkeye.

Petty Officer Tumilson was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Nell Tumilson; maternal grandparents, John and Leona Jacobs; a friend, Kevin Reiter, and his Brothers in Arms.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday at the Rudd-Rockford- Marble Rock Community School gymnasium. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Rockford.

Robert R. ‘Bob’ Henry

Robert R. “Bob” Henry, 46, of Charles City, died Friday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Robert Henry will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Janet Dorenkamp, Chaplain for Hospice of North Iowa will officiate.

Burial will be in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Colwell with Military Honors by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Robert Ray Henry was born April 30, 1965, at Cedar Rapids, the son of Delwyn R. and Lois Marie (Moore) Henry. In 1983, he graduated from the Wentworth Military Academy and later from Griffin College in Tacoma, Wash. Bob proudly served in the United States Army from 1985 to 1988. He was employed as an electrical technician at Patterson Dental and NIACC. On May 8, 1999, he was united in marriage to Jill Manson in Des Moines. His interests included hunting, fishing and trapping. Bob always enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He had many great memories with his friends.

Living family members include his wife, Jill Henry, of Charles City; parents, Delwyn and Lois Henry, of Charles City; sister, Jana Henry, of Indianola; brother, Grant (Mary Jo) Henry, of Milo; five nieces and nephews; maternal grandmothers, Theresa Schmickle, of Cedar Rapids, and Shirley Moore, of Guttenberg; and his dog, Macy.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ray and Jennie Henry; and maternal grandfathers, Fred Moore and Verl Schmickle.

Timothy J. ‘Tim’ Sullivan

Timothy J. “Tim” Sullivan, 85, of Charles City, died Saturday morning, Aug. 13, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Timothy Sullivan will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to service time Monday at the church.

Timothy Joseph Sullivan was born March 4, 1926, in New Hampton, the son of Raymond J. and Nora (McAloon) Sullivan. He graduated from the New Hampton High School and University of Iowa. Tim proudly served two years in the Army Air Force during WWII. On July 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Letty Ardery in Iowa City. Tim was self-employed, operating Sullivan Insurance Agency for over 30 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club and various insurance associations and boards. His interests included camping, golf, pheasant hunting, the Iowa Hawkeyes, reading mystery and history books, researching his Irish ancestry, dancing and watching Lawrence Welk. Tim will be remembered for his strong faith and his devotion to prayer and family.

Living family members include his wife of 63 years, Letty Sullivan, of Charles City; two children, Jayne (Tom) Holmstrom, of Stillwater, Minn. and David (Cindy) Sullivan, of Urbandale; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Rebecca Jane Sullivan.

He was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Corning to John and Dorothy Keesler Devereaux. He married Jean Phillips June 5, 1950, in Corning. Buck was the Director of Public Works for the city of Bloomfield. He also ran a lawn-mowing business and hired very few people that could keep up with him. He ran his lawn-mowing business until he was 75 years old. He was a passionate Chicago Cubs fan and also loved to garden and give away his produce. Buck served in the United States Navy during WWII.

He is survived by his wife; three sons: Glen (Joyce) Devereaux, Bill (Gail) Devereaux, both of Clinton, and Jim “J.D.” (Sheila) Devereaux, of Charles City; four daughters: Mary (William) Anderson, of Bloomington, Ill., Nancy (John) Kuster, of Fairfield, Pattie (Rick) Singley, of Bloomfield, and Donna (Nick) Copeland, of Keosauqua; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carmalita Smith, of Hot Springs, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson, Justin Singley; four sisters: Mary Bissell, Tete Bakerink, Rosalee Devereaux and Barbara Devereaux; and three brothers: George, Eddie and John “Jake” Devereaux.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, with the family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. No services are planned. Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date. The family requests that a donation be made to the memorial that will be established at a later date.

Glen R. Nelson, 79, of Charles City, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Glen Nelson was born May 15, 1932, in rural Colwell, the son of Dee B. and Mary (Hennings) Nelson. He attended school in Colwell and Charles City. Glen proudly served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954. In 1958, Glen received his Barber License after graduating from Barber School in Phoenix, Ariz. On June 22, 1959, he was united in marriage to Patricia Townsend in Bellview, Ill. He was a barber in Charles City for 53 years. Glen was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, VFW, American Legion, Moose Lodge, Isaac Walton League and National Fish and Game Club. His interests included lawn work, flowers, fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Patricia Nelson, of Charles City; three children, David (Terresa) Nelson, of Marble Rock, Tony Nelson, of Charles City and Mary (Garett) Bissen, of Charles City; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Watkins, of Greene, and Delores Fike, of Rudd.

Clarence Emory Justus was born Dec. 18, 1925, at Kalamo, Mich., the son of William and Pearl (Dull) Justus. He graduated from Vermontville High School in Vermontville, Mich. On Jan. 31, 1948, he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Burgess at Freeport, Mich. Clarence worked for the Oliver Corporation from 1943 to 1954 at Battle Creek, Mich., moving to Charles City in 1955 where he worked for Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company from 1955 to 1989. After retirement Clarence continued working at Charles City Steel and Welding for several years and then at Mills-Helmers Incorporated until the age of 80. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Through his leadership in the Boy Scouts of America he contributed to the lives of many young men through the years. Clarence was involved in many organizations in the community including the Jaycees, noon Kiwanis, Oliver Management Club, Floyd County Sheriff’s Reserve and the Floyd County Museum.

Living family members include his wife, Sarah Jane Justus, of Charles City; three children, Wesley (MaryJane) Justus, of Postville, Zan (Bob) Idler, of Florida, and Brad Justus, of Rudd; seven grandchildren, Kara (Kenny) Moore, Melissa (Joshua) Holthaus, Joshua (Kristin) Justus, Chris Idler, Jacque Idler, Stephanie Justus and Kristin Justus; six great-grandchildren, Abby Holthaus, Brady Holthaus, Holden Justus, Brenton Justus, Braylon Miller and Ella-Mae Koebrick.

Gene E. Lubbert

Gene E. Lubbert, 69, of Nora Springs, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Gene Edward Lubbert was born April 13, 1942, at Charles City, the son of Alvin and Mary (Green) Lubbert. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1962. On Dec. 15, 1962, he was united in marriage to Char Auringer at Floyd.

Gene worked at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company before becoming an independent insurance agent. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. His interests included fishing, hunting, watching movies, and working on his acreage. Family was always important to Gene and he looked forward to sharing his life with them.

Living family members include his wife, Char Lubbert, of Nora Springs, three daughters, Denise (Brian) Wilkins, of Mason City, Jodi Lubbert and special friend, Tom Lincoln, of Mason City and Kathy Lubbert and special friend Brian Howe, of Nora Springs; six grandchildren, Ashley (Adam) Kingery, Alyssa Porterfield, Zachary Porterfield, Dillon Stromley and special friend, Silver Collins, Dustin Stromley and Taylor Tiedt; a great-granddaughter, Alanah Stromley; two brothers, Duane Lubbert, of Charles City, and Harland Lubbert, of Texas; two sisters, Diann (Glenn) Jacobson, of Charles City, and Barbara (Melvin) Gibbs, of Waterloo; and devoted cat, Annie Sue.

Patrick Warren Marzen

 

NORTH LIBERTY — Patrick Warren Marzen, 44, of North Liberty, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 23, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father John Spiegel officiating.

Visitation will be on Monday from 3-8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will begin at 3 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Patrick Marzen Memorial Fund.

Patrick was born on Sept. 7, 1966, in Charles City, the son of Kenneth and Rose (Naumann) Marzen. He was raised in Nashua and was a 1985 graduate of Nashua High School. Following high school, Patrick attended The University of Northern Iowa where he went on to earn his BA and MA degrees, graduating in 1992. In 1994, Patrick accepted a position with NCS Pearson and continued his employment with the company for more than 17 years, most recently as a Site Manager.

Patrick was a person who was full of life. He loved talking with people and was willing to lend a hand whenever necessary. He was a very determined person who had many strong convictions. Patrick enjoyed buying tools, woodworking, hunting, going to garage sales, playing cards and pulling practical jokes on people. Most importantly, Patrick loved his family and truly embraced being a dad. He was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle and one who always tried to make the most out of life.

Survivors include his wife Susan (Deutmeyer) and their three sons Luke, Jacob and William, all at home in North Liberty; five brothers: Phil of Maquoketa, Greg, of Durham, N.C., Dan (Jeri), of Grinnell, Dean (Kim), of Charles City, and Doug, of Iowa City; three sisters: Carmel (Myron “Pete”) Hall, of Cedar Falls, Connie (Pat) Tapp, of Nashua, and Kathy (Tim) Beckler, of Tipton. Patrick is also survived by several nieces and nephews and all of his loving relatives on Susan’s side of the family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Dianne Marzen and Rebecca Marzen.

On March 13, 1954, she was united in marriage to Dale Bunston, Sr. at Preston, Minn. Shirley worked at Peterson Cleaners, Folkert’s Printing and for 25 years as a dietary aide at Floyd County Medical Center. Her hobbies included woodworking, quilting, gardening and traveling.

Living family members include her husband Dale Bunston, Sr., of Charles City; three children, Sandra (Wayne) Lantow, of Nashua, Sally Bunston and Dale D. Myron R. Wulff

Myron R. Wulff, 75, of Charles City, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 201, at Hospice of North Iowa Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Myron Russell Wulff was born Nov. 28, 1935, at Charles City, the son of Lawrence and Elsie (Melcher) Wulff. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1954. Myron proudly served in the United States Marines from 1956 to 1958. On Feb. 4, 1961, he was united in marriage to Patsy Miller at Charles City. Myron farmed west of Charles City on the Wulff Century Farm all of his life and also for 12 years was employed at Triad Construction. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Farm Bureau, and Floyd County Cattlemen’s Association. Myron enjoyed going to animal judging and tractor pulls at various fairs. He also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians and listening to country music. Myron was an avid Charles City sports fan and Booster Club member.

Living family members include two sons, Tod (Tammy) Wulff, of Rockford, and Toby Wulff, of Charles City; three grandchildren, Dylan Wulff, Jason Waddell and Britany Bell; a brother, Leland (Marilyn) Wulff, of Charles City; a sister, Joyce (Jim) Shover, of Hopkinton; two brothers-in-law, Wayne (Juanita) Miller, of Charles City, and Bill (Audrey) Miller, of Champlin, Minn.; and two sistersin- law, Marlene (Bob) Hockinson, of Cape Coral, Fla., and Viola Wulff, of Charles City.

Joan ‘Joann’ E. Downey

Joan “Joann” E. Downey, 78, of Marion, was called home to God on Aug. 20, 2011. She passed away peacefully at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, in Marion, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m.

Joan was born on July 23, 1933, in Edgewood to Ralph and Olaf (Clute) Funk. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1951 Valedictorian of her class. On July 4, she married Robert J. “Bob” Downey at St. Marks Catholic Church in Edgewood. While Robert served in the Army National Guard for a year, they lived in Alabama at Camp Rucker. They moved to the Cedar Rapids/Marion area where Robert returned to work and they made a permanent home.

Joan worked with her husband in his State Farm Insurance Agency as secretary/office manager for 15 years, using her welcoming telephone voice, exceptional organizational skills and kind manner to support the business. With her husband’s encouragement, she became a licensed realtor. After more than 20 years in real estate she retired from Coldwell Banker in 2002. A colleague once said, “If anyone needs a lift, just listen to Joan laugh.”

Joan took pride in a family she loved beyond measure. She enjoyed watching her children grow, especially in the teenage years. She loved hosting holiday dinners her large family of children and grandchildren.

Her faith was a quiet but strong guiding force in her life. She was a great role model for her children. She was perceptive and nonjudgmental in her love for others. She was smart, decisive and always operated from a plan. She had an energy, class, beauty, and a flair for fashion all her own. She played trumpet in high school and loved music, especially Christmas music.

She was involved in many community and volunteer opportunities over the years. She cherished volunteering at Prairiewoods Franciscan spirituality center, something she began at retirement. Prairiewoods is where she deepened her already existing interest in holistic health taking numerous courses, including reike. She was a compassionate and talented practitioner of healing touch spiritual ministry, and reike. She did reike for others in their homes during times of serious illness. She was an attractive, loving, and caring person who will be greatly missed.

Survivor include her husband Robert J. “Bob” Downey; children Kathy (Terry) Mohwinkle, of Topeka, Kan., Patricia, of Fort Wayne, Ind., Teresa (Clark) White, of Marion, Mike (Colleen), of Charles City, Don (Marilynne), of Eagan, Minn., Kurt (Debora), of Cedar Rapids, John (Cathy), of Overland Park, Kan., David (Wendy), of Marion; six granddaughters, 17 grandsons, two greatgranddaughters; two sisters, Jeanette Rops and Judy Long; and many nieces and nephews.

There she attended school. During her younger years she would rather be outdoors helping her father around the farm than be inside. Prior to her marriage she worked for several families in Osage. On Dec. 9, 1945, she was united in her home church Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Grafton where she was baptized and confirmed. Gertie was active with the YMCA and senior citizens and especially with her church where she belonged to the Ruth Circle, spent many years in attendance and working on the newsletter. Having a very loving heart she also delivered Sunday flowers after services to the infirmed and homebound members. She and her husband for several years donated the huge church Christmas trees for decoration. She enjoyed traveling and one of her favorite trips was to the holy land, taking bus trips and going to California in the winter. Gertie had a mind of her own and made all of her own major life decisions. She was independent and strong in her faith to do the right things for others and herself. Even though she and her husband never had children they always thought well and cherished family including all her nieces and nephews and greats. Many Sundays they would attend dinner at her house where she went all out making everyone feel comfortable.

Surviving Gertie are her sister Marjorie Schroeder, of Osage; brother Gene (Rose Marie) Nack, of Grafton; and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband on May 4, 1983, parents, and two sisters, Alpha Walling and Ruth Beneke, preceded her in death.

Wayne E. Swant

Wayne E. Swant, 94, of 300 N. Grand Ave, in Charles City, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Wayne E. Swant was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Charles City, the son of Amos H. and Emma M. (Wulff) Swant. He graduated from Colwell Consolidated High School, class of 1933. He was united in marriage to Mayme A. Meyers on March 6, 1939 in Charles City. The couple had resided in Charles City for most all of their lives.

Wayne farmed in the community for more than 42 years, until retiring in 1981. He was a member Elks and the Isaak Walton League, both in Charles City. Wayne served for 18 years on the Board of Directors for the Colwell CO-OP and was also the past president of the CO-OP. He served on the Midland District 12 Board in Minneapolis, Minn. Wayne also was a member of the Moose Lodge in Charles City and served as the past Governor. He enjoyed fishing, traveling to Texas and Arizona, where he was a prospector and rock hound. In the early years of his life, Wayne played in a dance band known as the “Tune Tossers.” Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. Wayne will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Wayne’s life are his son, Ken W. David E. Bynon

 

 

IONIA — David E. Bynon, 63, went to heaven on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at his home in Ionia. He was under the Cedar Valley Hospice care for the past four months for Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

A memorial mass for David will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia with Fr. Mark Osterhaus celebrating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery with Brian Kellogg, Ovey Johnson, Curt Carey, Jim Lee, Lloyd Robbins and Pat Hoffman serving as urn bearers. Military rites will be provided by Nashua VFW.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, at Ionia Funeral Home with a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. David “Dave” E. Bynon was born Nov. 1, 1947, in Rock Springs, Wyo. He was the son of Gilbert Evans and Madonna (Finnegan) Bynon. On Sept. 4, 1976, Dave was united in marriage to Betty Hoffman at St. Boniface Church in Ionia. While serving his country during the Vietnam War, Dave served 13 months with the 110 Military Police Company in Korea. He trained and worked closely with his police dog, Shaun. Dave worked with heavy equipment all of his adult life. For the past 31 years he worked for Chickasaw County running the road grader out of Ionia, retiring in August of 2009. Dave enjoyed taking his dog, Sammy for a run, fishing, working on the computer and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of the Nashua VFW and St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Dave is survived by his wife Betty, of Ionia; his daughter, Laura, of Osage; his parents, Evans and Donna Bynon, of Torrance, Calif.; one brother, Larry and his wife, Sheri; one sister, Patti McIlraith, all of Torrance, Calif. He has two granddaughters, Chantal and Destinee. Dave is also survived by his mother-in-law, Agatha Hoffman; his brothers-in-law, Don, Bob and Ed (Shirley) Hoffman; and one sisterin- law, Diane (Larry) Kellogg, all of Ionia; along with 19 nieces and nephews and 15 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, six uncles, one aunt, one nephew, Joseph Kellogg and father-in-law Jack Hoffman.

Max Santee

 

Max R. Santee, 77, of 2550 Asherton Ave, Nashua, died Friday afternoon, Aug. 26, 2011, at his home.

Max Ronald was born on March 7, 1934, at Dumont, the son of Francis “Sam” and Althea (Aherns) Santee. He graduated from the Dumont High School with the class of 1952. He served his country in Korea from 1952 until 1955 with the Marine Corps. On Aug. 7, 1960, he was united in marriage to Frances Overturf in Dumont. To this union was born four children. They made their home in the Dumont area then moved for a short time near Greene, and for the last 48 years lived on their current farm. Max was elated that they had a place to call home and raise their family. Soon livestock of sheep, pigs, milk cows and several wild horses they adopted from Montana joined the family. Max was employed in the foundry at White Farm in Charles City until it’s closing when he began working for Wright Tree Service out of Des Moines until his retirement in 1996 when his wife also retired.

In their retirement they loved taking bus trips especially to Oregon. During the summers while the children were growing up they spent time camping. Max bought a john boat that he would gladly row forhis kids on Clear Lake, Twin Ponds and down the Chickasaw River. He didn’t fish but loved watching the kids. Max had a quiet and close relationship with his children and grandchildren, often mentoring them to “Do well in school and head down the right road.” He was independent in his actions and careful that they were the right choice for his family and self. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nashua.

Max is survived by his wife Frances of 51 years. He was everything to her. Along with his daughter Angie and her husband John Marvin, of Charles City; two sons Scott and his wife Nona Santee, of Old Hickory, Tenn.; and Monte and his wife Lisa Santee, of Albert Lea, Minn.; he is survived by seven grandchildren Holly Santee, Logan and Seth Marvin, Nick, Matt, Jessica and Elizabeth Santee, and four great-grandchildren Jarrett Huffman, Dillon, Deacon, and Emma Caspers, and one brother Gene (Becky) Santee, of Jacksonville, N.C.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, his son Eric in 2004, and his daughter-in-law Terri in 2006.

Johnny J. Harrison

 

NASHUA — Johnny J. Harrison, 78, of Nashua, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the United Methodist Church, Nashua with Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula officiating.

Johnny Jerome Harrison was born July 5, 1933, on the family farm west of Nashua, the only child of Harry and Bernice (Young) Harrison. He attended Nashua High School, graduating in 1954. He was very proud of this accomplishment because school was not easy for him. He was hearing impaired, so learning along with his classmates was difficult. After graduation, Johnny joined his father on the farm. He took over for his parents, and farmed until retirement in 1996. He took great pride and worked very hard to keep his farm in immaculate condition. Johnny could be found at many Nashua-Plainfield sporting events, town celebrations and the many parades around the area.

Survivors include four cousins; Glenna (Darwin) Menengay-Buls, of Plainfield, David (Joy) Young, of Eldora, Florence Stufflebeam, of Waverly, and Jerome Young, of Florida.

Elsie Elizabeth was born on April 20, 1928, in Charles City the daughter of Walter and Meta (Rieken) Becker. She has been a life long member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed. She graduated with the class of 1946 from Charles City High School. Upon graduation, she held several jobs in the area until moving to New York for a couple of years to live with her brother Albert and his wife. After returning from New York she was united in marriage to Byron Hoeft on Sept. 22, 1950, and had three sons, Don, Doug and Dave. While raising her family, Elsie worked at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital and for a brief period worked at Ray’s Pizza. She retired from the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in February of 1990. Elsie was on bowling leagues for several years. She enjoyed walking and working in her yard. Prior to Byron’s death in 1993, they enjoyed many road trips throughout the country. Both her and Byron liked to watch the neighborhood baseball games that were played across the street from their home on 9th Street. She loved shopping for her grandchildren and was always ready for the holidays with the family often cooking and baking weeks before Christmas. Elsie also enjoyed reading Danielle Steel novels and working on word puzzles.

Surviving Elsie are her three sons Donald and his wife Carole Hoeft, of Eagan, Minn.; Douglas and his wife Lorraine Hoeft, of Charles City; David Hoeft, of Champlin, Minn.; six grandchildren Kristen and Laura Hoeft, Dustin (Emily) and Brent Hoeft, Jennifer and Michael Hoeft, two great-grandchildren Ethan and Ayrton Hoeft, one sister Irene Rosenberg, of Charles City, and one brother Albert (Catherine) Becker, of Gardiner, N.Y.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter Darcee Hoeft, one sister Esther Becker, and three brothers Harry, Ted and an infant.

Vera E. Vaughan

Vera E. Vaughan, 87, of Charles City, died Sunday evening, Aug. 28, 2011, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Vera Vaughan will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Jim Beranek will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Germany Valley Cemetery, Shirleysburg, Pa.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Vera Elizabeth Bucher was born, Nov. 11, 1923, in Huntingdon County, Pa., the daughter of Norman G. and Mary Alice (McKim) Bucher. In 1943, she graduated from Mt. Union High School in Pennsylvania. On Aug. 14, 1944, she was united in marriage to Lee E. Vaughan in Huntingdon, Pa. For more than 20 years, Vera was employed at various factories. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and Charity Peace Women’s Circle. Her interests included reading, camping and traveling the United States.

Living family members include her husband, Lee Vaughan, of Charles City; son, Lee (Roberta) Vaughan, Jr., of Phillip, S.D.; four grandchildren, Ruth (Jon) Carley, Daniel (Amielyn) Vaughan, Naomi (William) Terkildsen and Elizabeth (Alan) Lueth; 16 greatgrandchildren; two brothers-in-law, John Beaver, of Louistown, Pa. and Earl Vaughan, of McVeytown ; and a nephew, Duane Bucher, of Racine, Wis.

She was preceded in death by parents; son, Kenelm Vaughan on Dec. 7, 1966; sister, Helen Beaver on July 1, 2011; and a brother, Janvier Bucher on Feb. 23, 1978.

Ethel K. Zajic, 86 formerly of 96 Cedar Terrace N., Charles City who died Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center.

Ethel Kathleen was born the last child of Charles and Rose (Ferzholz) Gorres in Wanda, Minn. She received her education there. At an early age she worked in the family hotel and restaurant business and handled eggs. On Feb. 25, 1952, she was united in marriage to Leo Henry Zajic in Wanda. They made their home in that area until moving to a farm near Nashua in 1966. They raised their children there and following Leo’s death in 1996 she moved to Charles City.

As a youngster, she and her siblings enjoyed playing several instruments and having a “Good Ole Time!” She personally played the accordion. As the children grew she shared her skills as a cook and baker with them. Canning was one of her specialties and she would can her garden produce and make pickles and home made sausage. In her later years she enjoyed crocheting, listening to western music, and watching Archie Bunker and Western movies. Ethel was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Michaels Circle.

Ethel’s three children survive her: Gary and his wife Sharon Zajic, Marlys Zajic, and Donna and her husband Robert Martin, all of Charles City; and four grandchildren: Scott and Christopher Zajic, and Daniel and Michelle Martin; along with her special friend Ty Bouillin. Her husband, parents and sisters and brothers Caroline Brau, Violet Kavanagh, Jerome, Laverne, Lee, Adeline, and Mildred Gorres all preceded Ethel in death.

Elanore L. Grap

 

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Elanore L. Grap, 80, of Santa Clara, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2011, in Roseville.

Born Sept. 18, 1930, in Charles City to Charles and Naomi Nixt, Elanore faced life with a smile, giving hope and encouragement to all who loved her, even in the midst of battling cancer and struggling with effects of a stroke in her last years. More so, she faced death with anticipation, ready to be “home” with God and those waiting for her. Elanore’s life was filled with family and thoughtful service to others. She lovingly spent years caring for children. A charter member of the Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church, she was active in sewing circles, providing baby blankets and quilts. Some of her favorite things were yard sales, antique cars, angels, and almost anything sweet!

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth; a grandson Joshua Roque; her parents; a brother, William Nixt; brothers- in-law Gordon Jenks, Fred Wegner, Merle Bartz, Ted Becker; and a sister-in-law, Eillen Becker.

She leaves behind children Rodney and Gail, of Chico, Jeffrey, ofRoseville, and Rebecca Roque, of San Jose; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Jenks, of Ackley, Minn.; and sisters-in-law Betty Nixt, of Sun City, Ariz., Betty Wegner, of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Cleo (John) O’Connor, of Rudd, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews. Her life lives on in all of us.

MASON CITY — Samuel Ruiz Guaman, still born son of Fanny Guaman Altamirano and Jorge Alfonso Ruiz Aguilar, was born silently into their loving arms on Saturday Aug. 27, 2011.

Caroline ‘Carol’ Hammond

Caroline “Carol” Hammond, 91, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Port Charles in Charles City.

Funeral services for Carol Hammond will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Reverend Carl Ries will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Caroline Ruth Rodemaker Hammond was born Oct. 9, 1919, at Osage, the daughter of William and Mary (Nelson) Rodemaker. She attended school in Osage. On Dec.10, 1938, she was united in marriage to Clair Hammond in Osage. For a number of years they ran a craft business called Country Cutters. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting mushrooms and sitting around the campfire with family and friends. Other interests included bingo, crocheting, ceramics, gardening, quilting, working puzzles and reading. Carol was known by many as “Bass Annie” which was a CB handle that reflected her great love of fishing.

Living family members include three children, Del (Wendi) Hammond, of Excelsior, Minn., Jodi Hammond, of Charles City, and Julie (Alan) Knutson, of Waterloo; six grandchildren: Jake and Jack Hammond, Jaclyn and Jamie Swiggum and Allison and Cassandra Knutson; and a great-granddaughter, Jadyn Swiggum.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clair on Dec. 25, 2003; five sisters; and four brothers.
