William ‘Bill’ K. Ehling

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mabel; a son, Dennis; a brother, Carl; and sisters Mildred Demro and Amelia Miller.

Those left to honor his memory include his sons, Ken and Dean Ehling; special nephew, Clair Demro; sisters Loretta Weiss and Marguerite Shiber; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

City. William “Bill” K. Ehling, 90, of New Brighton, Minn., and formerly of Charles City, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the Brightondale Assisted Living in New Brighton, Minn.

A funeral service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 701 First Ave., in Floyd on Thursday, June 2, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Martha Bennett officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. A visitation will be held at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City on Wednesday, June 1 from 4-7 p.m.

Bill was born on June 21, 1920, in Charles City, the son of Oscar and Martha (Lefke) Ehling. He was united in marriage to Mabel Harms on June 21, 1940. Bill entered the United States Army in 1994 serving two years during World War II before being honorably discharged. He returned to Charles City where he was employed for White Farm for over 33 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the VFW and the Floyd Grace United Methodist Church. Following his wife’s death in 2003, Bill moved to New Brighton. He had been an 83-year resident of Charles
City.


John Whitehead

GREENE — John Whitehead, 75, of Greene, died of cancer Monday, May 30, 2011, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Nov. 29, 1935, to John (Jack) and Bernice (Montgomery) Whitehead of Greene. John went to State College of Iowa (UNI) and received a teaching certificate in 1962. He then taught in Traer for six years and Parkersburg for two years. He spent the majority of his teaching career in Charles City, primarily teaching math at the middle and high schools.

John is survived by three daughters and one granddaughter: Ellen Whitehead and daughter Joellen, of Waterloo; Jane Whitehead (Randy Hogancamp), of Cedar Falls; and Dr. Sara Whitehead of Palo Alto, Calif.

He is preceded in death by his parents, stillborn daughter Mary Dawn, and brother-in-law, Bill Bartlett.

Visitation will be Friday, June 3, from 5-7 p.m. at Reid Funeral Home (followed by a prayer service) with graveside service Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Thomas L. Hall

 

Thomas L. Hall, Sr., 57, of Rockford, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Memorial services will be held Friday, June 3, at 4 p.m. at Faith Bible Chapel, 1701 Ohio St., Charles City. A supper will follow the service.

Thomas Lee Hall, Sr. was born July 28, 1953, at Iowa City, the son of John and Pauline (Linderman) Hall. He received his education at Mason City. On Feb. 22, 1975, he was united in marriage to Berniece Miller. Thomas enjoyed fishing, trapping and hunting. He looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Berniece Hall, of Rockford; a son, Thomas Hall, Jr., of Clear Lake; three grandchildren: Jordan, Ashley and Sarah Hall; a brother, Michael Espinosa, of Mason City; and four sisters: Dorothy (John) Thieland, of Wisconsin, Frances McMann, of Missouri, Charlotte (Jerry Calvert) Linchman, of Nora Springs, and Toni Espinosa, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry Hall; a daughter, Ann Hall; and several brothers.

 MASON CITY — Donne L. Seible, 79, of Mason City, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

MASON CITY— M. Mildred Schissel, 90, of Rockwell, formerly of 218 3rd St., Rockwell, passed away Friday, June 3, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 309 Elm St. E, Rockwell. Officiating will be the Rev. Fathers James William Dubert and Richard Ball will concelebrate the mass. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart School with a parish prayer service at 5 p.m. and the rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass Monday at the school. Helen AnnaMarie Stille, 91, of Nashua, died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at St. John United Church of Christ-Pleasant Hill in rural Nashua. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may greet the family from 4-7 p.m.

Wednesday, June 8, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service Thurday at the church.

She attended Fremont #8 Butler County Country School. She was united in marriage to Paul M. Stille on Jan. 16, 1944, at St. John United Church of Christ-Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua. To this union, five children were born. They lived on their Butler County farm all their married lives.

Helen was a lifelong member of Saint John United Church of Christ-Pleasant Hill and served in the Women’s Fellowship for many years. She most loved being with family, quilting, mowing the lawn and being in the company of her many friends. She was a very special lady to all who knew her.

Helen is survived by her five children: LaVern (Carol) Stille, of Davenport, Donald Stille, of Nashua, Max (Judy) Still, of Portland, Ore., Daniel Stille, of Nashua, Sharon (Darrel) Peterson, of Kennewick, Wash.; two brothers, Eldon (Evelyn) Hauser, of Clarksville, Paul (Joyce) Hauser, of Hampton; one sister-in-law, Edna (Art) Kohls, of Greene; five grandchildren: Ben (Lori), of Boca Raton, Fla., Shane (Chama), of Altoona, Paul (Karen), of Glenview, Ill., Angela (Jon), of Hamden, Conn., Michael (Jessica), of Chandler, Ariz.; and one greatgrandson, Bryce.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul on Feb. 16, 2001; two brothers, Leonard Hauser, Theophil Hauser; and one sister, Luella Stirm.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Liebe Care Center in Greene for all their loving care.

Lloyd Charles Chambers, 74, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle against colon cancer, in Benson, Ariz., on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010.

A Celebration of Life Memorial for Lloyd Charles Chambers will be held Sunday, June 19, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Wildwood Park Shelter House. Family and friends of Lloyd's family are invited to attend the memorial.

The family will be having a potluck at noon.

Harley Merle Ascher was born Nov. 28, 1927, in Wellsburg, Grundy County, a son of John and Martha (Harms) Ascher and died June 4, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He received his education in the Nashua public schools graduating from Nashua High School in 1946.

On June 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to Helen Swinton at the Methodist Church in Plainfield. They made their home and farmed near Pleasant Hill where they raised their family. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, in Nashua, where he served on the church council and was a member of the Brotherhood. Harley enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and watching TV.

Harley is survived by Helen, his loving wife of nearly 63 years; two sons: Dennis “Jack” (Jeri) Ascher, of Clarksville, Ronald (Netti) Ascher, of Greene; six grandchildren: Lori Ascher, Lisa (Chad) Vance, Bobby (Stephanie) Ascher, Brett (Emily) Ascher, all of Greene, Brandie (Adam) Hoffman, of Clarksville, and Brock Ascher, of Urbandale; seven great-grandchildren: Peyton Hoffman, Brooklyn Hoffman, Zane, Briggs Ascher, Dylan Ascher, Dakota and Alexis Vance; and two sisters: Evelyn (Eldon) Hauser, of Clarksville, and Myrna (Roger) Pope, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert, two infants, Marilyn and Gary; his parents and grandparents.

Lois Knolke Swinton

Lois Swinton passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011, in Long Beach, Calif. Lois was born Sept. 2, 1918, in Charles City, the daughter of Fred Knolke and Grace Huston Knolke.

She graduated from Charles City High School in 1938. Lois married Willard Swinton in 1942 in Hinsdale, Ill.

She is survived by her sister Mildred Hoeft, of Charles City.

She was preceeded in death by her parents Fred and Grace Knolke, and husband Willard Swinton.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Sharon Immer, of Burnsville, Minn., and Kathryn (Steven) Anderson, of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren: Gerald (Carolyn) Immer, Andrew (Jamie) Immer, Sarah Immer and Charlie Anderson; and two great-grandchildren.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law, Edgar Immer.

Alice Waters

Alice Waters, 86, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Charles City, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services for Alice Waters will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 13, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Betty Alice Nielsen Waters was born Feb. 28, 1925, at Mason City, the daughter of Niels and Johanne (Jakobsen) Nielsen. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1943. On Nov. 17, 1945, she was united in marriage to Merle Waters. They moved to Charles City where they ran the State Farm Insurance office. She also worked for Northwestern Bell. Alice was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She also taught infant swimming at the YMCA. Alice enjoyed needlework, family vacations and sharing life’s experiences with everyone. Her home and yard will always be remembered as favorite gathering places for all the neighborhood children.

Living family members include four children: David (Linda) Waters, of Northwood, Barb Waters, of Cedar Falls, Kevin Waters, of Cedar Falls, and Jim (Stacey) Waters, of Granger; five grandchildren: Michelle (Tim) Ritzert, Christina (Phillip) Rice, Mike Waters, Nathan Waters and Erica Waters; four great-grandchildren, Alex and Ben Ritzert and Zoey and Hayden Rice; a brother, Paul (Marie) Nielsen, of Mason City; and a sister, Edie (Bruce) Meeker, of Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Oct. 26, 1996; and a brother, Dane Nielsen.

Idah Quigley, 86, of Charles City, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Idah Ione Hunter Quigley was born June 15, 1924, at Center Point, the daughter of David and Pearl (Schmickle) Hunter. She graduated from Center Point High School. On June 10, 1948, she was united in marriage to Gordon Quigley at Center Point. They lived in New York City for several years while Gordon was in the Army. After his discharge they returned to Charles City where Gordon was employed at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. Gordon died on Nov. 6, 1995. Idah was a homemaker. For many years they wintered in Texas. Idah enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cooking and helping at and working farmers market.

Living family members include a niece, Juanita Dochterman, of Ludowici, Ga.; a great-niece, Brenda (Scott) Thompson, of Columbia, S.C.; and three great-great-nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Juanita Marie Zarifis.

Dean E. Sogard

AMES — Dean E. Sogard, 81, of Ames, and formerly of Charles City, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, June 9, 2011.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 13, at 2:30 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Interment will be later in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.

Dean Sogard was born July 17, 1929, in Clear Lake to Marvin and Genevieve Sogard. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1948. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and remained active in the Air Force reserves for a total of 28 years. He married Betty Mayfield on Aug. 21, 1955. He completed a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University in 1958 and worked as a civil engineer for 32 years with the Federal Highway Administration.

He was a member of Elks Lodge 1626, American Legion Post 37, and Arcadia Masonic Lodge 249 AF and AM. He was active in the Cyclone Unit of the Za Ga Zig Shrine and Story County Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife, Betty Sogard, of Ames; three sons, Mark Sogard, of Raleigh, N.C., Dave (Kolleen) Sogard, of Edina, Minn., and Philip (Paula) Sogard, of Hugo, Minn.; one daughter, Stefani (Kevin) Kloiber, of Andover, Minn.; six grandchildren: Jonathan, Anna, Kyle, Joseph, Patrick and Paige; and a sister, Gene Mary (Rod) Rohrberg, of Torrance, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Doris A. Wilson
Doris A. Wilson, 72, of Charles City, died Sunday, June 12, 2011, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Doris Wilson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Robert Treichel will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Doris Ann Thompson Wilson was born Sept.

20, 1938, at Perry, the daughter of Otis and Blanche (Carlton) Thompson. She received her primary education at Perry until her family moved to Charles City in 1954. She then attended Charles City High School graduating in 1957. On Aug. 17, 1957, she was united in marriage to Walter Wilson at Tuscumbia, Mo. They then moved to Charles City where they would spend the rest of their lives. Over the years Doris was a cabinet maker, hobby farmer and raised puppies and horses. She was a former member of the Oak Park Church, Faith Bible Chapel and Double C Saddle Club. Her interests included all animals, putting puzzles together, sewing and knitting. Family was very important to Doris and she took every opportunity to share life’s experiences with them.

Living family members include a daughter, Brenda (Anthony) Schweiger, of Charles City; a stepson, Danny (Gloria) Wilson, of Charles City; two stepdaughters, Lorraine Dotson, of Floyd, and Anita Sullivan, of Mason City; 21 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Earl Thompson, of Missouri, Otis “Lyle” Thompson, of Perry, Neal (Phyllis) Thompson, of Ionia, and David Thompson, of Kansas; and a sister, Rosemary (Earl) Dawson, of Streetman, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1993; two brothers, Ray and Glenn Thompson; and a sister, Irene Miller.

Lucille Walz Cobet

TAMA— Lucille Walz Cobet, 90, of Tama, passed away Monday, June 13, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama with Pastor Thomas Dowling officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 15, from 5-8 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Lucille was born on March 17, 1921, on a farm north of Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Louise (Lorenzen) Brandt.

She graduated from Toledo High School in 1939.

On May 25, 1944, she was united in marriage to Dale Darwin Walz at the Tama Methodist Parsonage. He passed away in 1987. On Jan. 20, 1990, she married Rex Earl Cobet at the Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama.

Lucille was a homemaker. During her life she also worked for the Hemp Mill, ASCS office, South Tama Schools, Sunny Hill Care Center and Busy Bee Preschool. She was a member of Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama and the UMW, Tama Legion Auxiliary, Oak Hill Cemetery and Haven Cemetery Associations. Lucille volunteered at Carrington Place where she played cards with the residents. She loved playing cards and going to the casino. In her younger years, she enjoyed dancing. Lucille was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Dale on June 29, 1987; her son, Gary Walz on Dec. 22, 1988; her husband, Rex on April 26, 1998; and a sister, Bernice Eisele on April 23, 2005.

Survivors include her son, Larry (Barb) Walz, of Tama; her stepdaughter, Cherie (Donn) Schafer, of Charles City; three grandchildren, Tim (Candi) Walz, Tammy (Steve) Chyma and Tiffany (Jerrod) Bridgewater; two stepgrandsons, Andrew (Jennifer) Schafer and Matthew (Jennifer) Schafer; nine great-grandchildren: Tyler, Trisha and Tanner Walz, Bailey, Kaylee, Alyssa and Abigail Chyma and Gavin and Emerson Bridgewater; four step-great-grandchildren: Noah, Adam, Allison and Leah Schafer; her siblings, Alfred (Doris) Brandt, of Marshalltown, and Lorraine (Rex) Avery, of Tama; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.

William ‘Bill’ Cero

William “Bill” J. Cero, 81, of Charles City, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City with Father Carl Ries officiating. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.

William Joseph Cero was born on July 15, 1929, to Joseph and Jesse Cero in Bassett. He was united in marriage to Margaret Mae DeBettegnies on Aug. 3, 1950, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton. William was employed at White Farm, Inc. from 1954 to 1992. During these years he also did independent painting of homes, residental and rural. William was also an avid “coon” hunter and owned several “top line breed” hunting dogs. Following retirement William enjoyed lawn mowing and spending time with his wife, family and his beloved dog “Eddie.” William will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Dad was a man of “few words,” but one of “many thoughts.”

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret “Girlie”; children: Mila (Lyle) Bunston and John (Mary) Cero, both of Humbolt; Diane Bilharz, of Nashua; Lori Cero and James Cero, both of Charles City; grandchildren: Brandon and Abby Bunston, Steven Cero, Katie Davis, Christine (Frank) Valenzuela, Michelle (Paul) Jones, Michael (Tabatha) Caswell, Cody Bilharz, Maggie Hoy, Amy Cero; and 11 great-grandchildren with two on the way.

William was preceeded in death by his parents; siblings: Charlie, Ted, Dewey, Eddie, Mildred, Anna Mae; and his grandson, Jesse William Cero, in 2006.

Ardis D. (Guenther) Kettleson

Ardis DeLene (Guenther) Kettleson, 71, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 6, 2011 at Lund Hospice Home in Arizona, surrounded by family.

Ardis was born Feb. 18, 1940, in LaMoure, N.D., the daughter of Frederick and Holly Guenther. She graduated from LaMoure High School in 1958 and then attended Valley City State College, where she received her teaching certificate.

Ardis married Gordon Kettleson on Dec. 27, 1966. Gordon and Ardis moved to Charles City in 1968 and were employed as teachers before retiring in 2002. Ardis will be remembered for her grace and beauty, as well as her teaching style and her influence on many students. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, writing, watching her granddaughter, shopping and getting her hair and nails done, among many other things Ardis is survived by her husband; a daughter DeLene Kettleson; a son Erik (Jessica) Kettleson; a granddaughter, Aya; a brother, Harley (LaVonne) Guenther; and a sister, Delores “Karen” (Larry) Timm. Ardis was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be on June 24, from 6-8 p.m., and funeral services will be on June 25, at 10 a.m. Both will be held at the First Congregational Church in Charles City.

Grace Ann Nielsen

GREENE — Grace Ann (Olson) Nielsen was born at Hudson in Black Hawk County on March 24, 1920, a daughter of Emil and Lydia (McCurdy) Olson, and died at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in the caring comfort of Hospice of North Iowa, June 19, 2011, at 91 years of age.

Memorial services will be held 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 22, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. 1st St., Greene, with Rev. Gary Hatcher, St. Peter Lutheran Church, presiding. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, at a later date.

Those wishing to express their sympathy may send memorials to Hospice of North Iowa or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greene in Grace’s memory.

Elvie Reetz

A funeral service for Elvie Reetz will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with Pastor Debra Lincoln of the Colwell United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Elvie Leona Rose Reetz was born on June 24, 1914, in Calhoun County. Her parents were Frank and Lena (Wood) Rose. Elvie died on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City at the age of 96 years.

Elvie graduated from the Rinard High School in 1933. She then graduated from Capital City College in Des Moines. After graduation, she was a secretary for the Coca-Cola plant in Des Moines. In 1938 she was united in marriage to William Harold Dolph. To this union four children were born. After moving to the Colwell area, she became a farm woman. In December of 1955 she married Kenneth Reetz.

Elvie belonged to several organizations: Colwell United Church of Christ and Ladies Aide, Colwell Culture Club, Colwell Community Center, Women of the Moose, Iowa Federated Women’s Club, Rebecca Lodge, Air Force Mothers of American, and the Floyd County Navy Mothers. Ken and Elvie were also members of the Cedar Valley Steam Engine Association.

Those left to cherish her memory include her four children: Roselyn Beyer, of Iowa, Paul Dolph, of Oklahoma, Jerald Dolph, of Texas and Janet Hancock, of Colorado; 10 grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 1977; and her only sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and James B. Romans.

William ‘Bill’ Rickart

William “Bill” Rickart, 48, of Charles City, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City as the result of complications from pneumonia.

Memorial services for Bill Rickart will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate.

William Robert Rickart was born Nov. 16, 1962, at Charleston, Ill., the son of William and Darlene (Arnold) Judy. He graduated from Davis County High School in Bloomfield, Ray Vouge School of Design in Chicago, Ill., and attended school at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., for Radiologic Technology. Bill was an x-ray technician, worked in a cardiac cath lab and also was a Medical Traveler working in many states. His interests included artwork, flowers, traveling and cooking especially grilling for family and friends. In 2004 Bill had a stroke which prevented him from continuing work. Because of this, he helped start the Head and Stroke Support Group at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Living family members include his mother, Darlene Rickart, of Charles City, two sisters, Sheila (Jim) Devereaux and Brenda Judy, both of Charles City; four nieces, Melissa (Brad) Martin, Tiffany Reiher, Heather Reiher, and Nicole Reiher; a nephew, Cody Reiher; and three great nephews, Kaleb Martin, Kade Martin and Kale Martin.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Judy; and a brother, Kenneth Eugene Judy.

John Arthur ‘Jack’ Reid

GREENE — John Arthur “Jack” Reid, 56, of Greene, owner of Reid’s Funeral Chapel, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 2, at First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor John Hanna presiding. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m., Friday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene with a scripture service at 7:30 followed by a Masonic service.
