Joseph
Daniel French, the son of Cecil French and Gladys French Hackley was
born August 3, 1925 in Clarion, Iowa and died October 17, 2002 in
Burnsville, Minnesota of bladder cancer. His boyhood was spent in
Clarion, Omaha, Nebraska, and Rowan, Iowa. In 1940 he and his
parents moved to Clarksville where he met his future wife, Geraldine
Rhoads. They were married October 4, 1943 in Des Moines. Joe had
been drafted into the Army at that time out of his senior year of
high school at West High in Waterloo. He served in V Corp of the
U.S. Army in Europe and was discharged in October, 1945. Joe
attended Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City and some time
after was employed by the Federal Internal Revenue Service. He later
transferred to the Intelligence Division as a Criminal Investigator.
He became a born again Christian in 1972 and after his retirement he
and his wife, Jerri, became active in camps Farthest Out and the
United Prayer Tower which are headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Joe was a member of Valley United Methodist Church in West Des
Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, J.
Patrick, and his son-in-law, Lester Hedrick. He will be greatly
missed by his family whom he cared for very much: his wife of 59
years, Jerri; his daughters, Cynthia French of Mason City and Luanne
French-Nordstrom of Apple Valley, Minnesota; his five grandchildren
Christina Hedrick-Daughenbaugh of Mason City, Heidi Grant and
husband Dan of Mason City, Shane Hedrick and wife Lyn of Wasilla,
Alaska, Jessica and Joe Nordstrom of Apple Valley; his six
great-grandchildren Dustin Hedrick, Casey and Lee Daughenbaugh of
Mason City, Savanna Grant of Mason City, Kelsey Jo and Mitch Hedrick
of Wasilla, Alaska; one sister-in-law and husband, Dell and Dick
Poland of Clarksville; his brother-in-laws Reid Rhoads and wife
Lavonne of Davenport, Iowa, and Richard Rhoads of San Rafael,
California. Internment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa.
Beverly Jean
Schipper

Beverly Jean Schipper, age 64, of
Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry and Anna (Ryks)
Berends on August 12, 1938, in Parkersburg, Iowa. She was
baptized and was a member of the Parkersburg Christian Reformed
Church. She graduated from the Parkersburg High School with the
class of 1956. Beverly Berends was united in marriage with
Richard W. Schipper on April 23, 1957, at the Parkersburg
Christian Reformed Church. They made their home in Austinville,
Iowa for a year and moved one mile west of Kesley, Iowa where
they farmed for 43 years. In 2001, they moved to their present
home in Aplington. Beverly was a loving wife and home-maker to
her family. After marriage, Beverly was an active member of the
Kesley Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School and Bible
School for many years and also attended the United Presbyterian
Women’s Group. Recently she became a member of the First
Reformed Church in Aplington and enjoyed being part of the
Women’s Studies group. Beverly liked to bowl and was a member of
several area bowling leagues. Beverly also enjoyed attending her
children’s activities and later her grandchildren’s activities.
In her spare time, she kept herself busy with sewing, crafts,
walking and playing cards. On Wednesday, October 23, 2002,
Beverly died at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa,
of complications of cancer. She was preceded in death by one
daughter, Robyn in infancy; her parents; one brother, Marvin
Berends; and four sisters, Anita Steinmeyer and Evelyn Renken,
and two in infancy, Anna and Shirley Berends. Beverly is
survived by her husband, Richard W. Schipper of Aplington; one
son, Randall Schipper and his wife, Anne of Ackley, Iowa; two
daughters, Rhonda Meester and her husband, Kenny, of Parkersburg
and Renae Schachterle and her husband, John, of Ackley; seven
grandchildren, Brad (Jamie), Brooke and Brittney Meester, Amanda
and Kyle Schipper and Katie and Jacob Schachterle; one great
granddaughter, Lily Meester; and six sisters, Florence Harms of
Ackley, Carrie Kruger and her husband, Bernerd Sr., of Holland,
Iowa, Marjorie Rewerts and her husband, Herman, of Parkersburg,
Frances Schipper and her husband, Alvin, of Kesley, Dee
Christophel and her husband, Rich, of Aplington and Karen
Karsjens and her husband, Bud, of Aplington. Funeral Services
were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 28, 2002 at the First
Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan De Jong
officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Soloist David Harms sang
“Precious Memories” and “One Day At A Time.” Congregational
Hymns were “In The Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Casketbearers were Dennis Harms, Terry Schipper, Bernerd Kruger,
Jr., Scott Schipper, Dennis Schipper, Rick Brouwer. Flower
Committee was Lenora Hemmen, JoAnn Schipper, and Kay Eilers.
Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of
arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Irene M. Hahn, 83, of Allison, Iowa
passed away October 27, 2002 at the Allison Care Center. She
was born November 29, 1918 in Butler County, Iowa to Ed and
Martha (Brinkman) Uhlenhopp. Irene married John Hahn on
November 13, 1936 in Elgin, Illinois. She was a homemaker,
and was employed at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Allison. She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in
Allison, and she enjoyed camping, fishing, and watching
television. Irene is survived by two daughters: Eileen and
husband, Dennis Lindeman of Allison, and Darlene and
husband, Larry Slocum of Allison; five grandchildren and
eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, John; son, Larry; granddaughter, Mary; a
brother, John and a sister, Mary. Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Trinity
Reformed Church in Allison with Rev. Steve Petroelje
officiating. Special music was provided by keyboardist, Mrs.
Merle Hoodjer accompanying the congregational hymns of “In
The Garden”, “Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art.”
The flower committee was Alma Bettenga and Fern Myers.
Pallbearers were Ed Hanig, Gary Lewis, Tracy Slocum, Bob
Mennenga, Brad Lindeman and Jeff Lindeman. Final resting
place was in the Oak Hill Cemetery rural Bristow, Iowa with
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison in charge of
arrangements.

Lillian Truax
Lillian Truax age 90, of Parkersburg, Iowa,
was born March 20, 1912, in Butler County, Iowa near Kesley, the
daughter of Sweer and Elizabeth Smith Hovenga. She married John
Truax on January 17, 1931, at the Evangelical Methodist Church in
Dumont, Iowa. The couple made their home in Parkersburg. Lillian was
a member of First Congregational Church, Parkersburg. She very much
enjoyed her gardening, flowers and playing the organ by ear for many
years. Lillian and John were always working on a project,
remodeling, woodworking and willing to drop everything to help their
family. Mom especially enjoyed the warmth of Christmas, still
putting up a tree, angels, and her manger, even last year. She loved
to bake, especially cookies for her family. She died at 3:08 p.m.,
Friday, October 18, 2002, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo,
Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John
Truax, January 10, 1994; one son, Kenneth Truax, February 9, 1994;
one granddaughter, Hope Ann Brown, November 26, 1988; one
great-great-granddaughter, Alexis Freeseman, October, 2001; five
brothers, Harm, John, Ben, Sweer and John Hovenga; and six sisters,
Tena Truax, Elizabeth Hovenga, Stella DeVries, Emma Crawford, Bena
Block and Tillie Siems. She is survived by two daughters, Norma and
her husband, Roland Mehmen, Parkersburg, Iowa and Janice Brown,
Shell Rock, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Betty Truax, Parkersburg,
Iowa; seven grandchildren, Rodney Truax, Sr., Roxanne Miller, Robin
Pabst; Jeffrey Mehmen, Janella Mehmen, Heidi Albers and Hollace
Shinn;13 great-grandchildren, Rodney Truax, Jr., Rusty Truax, Reggie
Truax, Rebecca Truax, Brenda Randall, Amy, Shane Pabst, Jaydon
Renken, Jeremy Mehmen, Jody Mehmen, Adriana Shinn, Amber Shinn, and
Brianna Albers; six great-great-grandchildren, Devon, McKenna,
Jordyn, Miranda, Matthew, Whitney Truax and one on the way; two
step-great-granddaughters, Amy Miller and Stephanie Miller and one
step-great-great-grandson, Joshua Miller. Funeral Services were at
10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at the First Congregational
Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. Officiating the services was Rev. Ron
Bartlett, Family Prayer Service was given by Pastor Jim Bauer. The
Organist was Mary Ann Simon, the vocalist was Jan Johnson and the
Congregational Hymns were “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder” &
“Blessed Assurance.” The Casketbearers Jeff Mehmen, Rod Truax, Sr.,
Tom Shinn, Bryan Miller, Rick Albers & Keith Renken. Interment was
at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz

Leo Heiko Dralle, 85, of Allison, Iowa
died on October 31, 2002, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo, of natural causes. On Setpember 18, 1917, Leo was born
the son of Henry And Lottie (Wessels) Dralle, rural Allison. He
was educated in the rural Butler County country schools. On
December 31, 1939, Leo was united in marriage to Loraine Kramer
in Allison. He worked as a farmhand until he got married, then
farmed until retiring in February 1980. He was baptized on
November 18, 1917, and confirmed on April 3, 1932 at the St.
John’s EV. Lutheran Church, Vilmar. Leo enjoyed fishing in
Canada, camping, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Survivors include a daughter: Barbara and husband, Dean
Westendorf of Allison; a son: Robert and wife, Jurene Dralle of
Allison; two brothers: Albert Dralle of Allison and Floyd Dralle
of Bristow; a sister: Viola Roberts of Grundy Center; eight
grand-children: Lonna and husband Steve Debner, Larry and wife
Jenise Westendorf, Dawn Eklenborg, Kim and husband Tim Schafer,
Susan and husband Brett Langfritz, Sheryl Johnson, Tim Primus,
Kim and husband Brian Hofstra; fifteen great grandchildren and
four great-great grandchildren. Leo was preceded in death by his
parents, wife, borthers John, Vern, Leland, and Harry; one
sister, Lucille Cassman and one brother in infancy. Funeral
services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 4, 2002 at
St. John’s EV. Lutheran Church, rural Greene, Iowa with Rev.
Mark Walker officiating. Special music was provided by organist,
Florence Vieker accom-panying the congregational singing.
Pallbearers were Joe Dralle, Larry Dralle, Steve Dralle, Tim
Primus, Earl Wiegmann and LeRoy Dralle. Final resting place was
in the St. John’s EV. Lutheran Cemetery, rural Greene, Iowa.

Funeral Mass for Laura M. Merfeld Popes,
99, of 101 North Water Street, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday,
November 4, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev.
Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s
Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Greene where there will be a Vigil Service at
4:30 p.m. At the conclusion of the Vigil Service family members and
friends are invited to share memories of Laura’s life. Laura Mary
Merfeld was born August 21, 1903, to Matthias and Mary (Brunner)
Merfeld in rural Butler County, the only daughter with eight
brothers; and died Thursday, October 31, 2002, at the New Hampton
Care Center in New Hampton, Iowa. She received her education in
rural country school until the eighth grade and then Mount St. Clare
Academy in Clinton. On October 11, 1927, she was united in marriage
to Carl J. Popes at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. To this
union, six children were born. Laura was an avid gardener, growing
and canning many of those fruits and vegetables Tenderly cultivating
her various flowers was something she enjoyed. She spent hours
creating beautiful handiwork such as crocheting, tatting, quilting,
and knitting. She was an exceptional seamstress, fashioning outfits
that clothed her children and others. Above all, she loved her
family, always eager to have them and others experience the warmth
of her hospitality. During her lifetime, she was actively involved
in all her church organizations, including the Guilds, Catholic
Daughters of America, Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women, and she
held offices in several of them. She will be missed by her family
and friends. Surviving are three daughters, Mary Mahoney; Rita
(Charles) Swinton, both of Nashua, Iowa; Delores (Sister Carla)
Popes, PBVM of Dubuque, Iowa; one son Glen J. (Billie) Popes of West
Long Branch, New Jersey; daughter-in-law Sandra Popes of Grundy
Center, Iowa; twenty one grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren,
and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Vern Merfeld of
Greene and one sister-in-law Edna Merfeld of Osceola, lowa. She was
preceded in death by her husband Carl on May 3, 1988; a daughter
Patricia Shimek on July 10. 1996; a son Howard on November 12, 2000;
a son-in-law James Mahoney on July 30, 2001, one grandchild, two
great-grandchildren, her parents and seven brothers: Roy, Ed,
George, Clyde, Henry, Harry, and Rev. Howard Merfeld. Those planning

Gladys Meyer, age 81, of Aplington,
Iowa, was born the daughter of Edd and Tillie (Boelman) Finger
on January 15, 1921, in Grundy County on a farm near Aplington.
She received her education from Pleasant Valley #3 School.
Gladys Finger was united in marriage with Oscar Meyer on
November 4, 1944, at Risen Fawn, Georgia. They made their home
in Aniston, Alabama. While Oscar was in the Army, Gladys worked
in Unica Mills, a sewing factory. In 1945 they moved to a farm
near Aplington and in 1986 they moved to their present home in
Aplington. Gladys stained and varnished furniture for others,
she worked at the Sale Barn in Aplington and also sold Avon to
ladies in the area. Gladys was a member of the St. Peter’s
United Church of Christ in Wellsburg and was presently attending
the Bethel Reformed Church in rural Aplington. She enjoyed
crocheting, baking, quilting, sewing and especially making
blankets for their grandchildren. Gladys liked to go bowling and
she earned a silver medal in the Senior Olympics in 1988. She
loved her family very much and enjoyed spending time with all of
them. Gladys died on Wednesday, October 30, 2002, at her home in
Aplington of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Edd and Tillie (Boelman) Finger; one sister, Lillian
Kruger; and one brother, George Finger. Gladys is survived by
her husband, Oscar Meyer of Aplington; one son, Jimmy Meyer and
his wife, Wanda of Aplington; one daughter, Vickie Capron and
her husband, Stanley of Amarillo, Texas; six grandchildren,
Roxanne Bolhuis and her husband, Jon, Susan Leamon and her
husband, Mike, Rick Capron and his wife, Rachel, Heidi Bryant
and her husband, Ronnie, Laci Mulder and her husband, Mark,
Mandi Lacock and her husband, Tom; six great grandchildren,
Brittany and Tyller Reints, Shayle, Megan and Katelynn Bryant

Alice Harms-Roelfs, 87, of Allison,
Iowa died on November 16, 2002, at The Meadows Apartments, Shell
Rock, Iowa, of natural causes. On March 29, 1915, Alice was born
the daughter of Alexander Noble and Rosa Gertrude (Moore)
Thompson in Glenwood, Min-nesota. She was raised in the Shell
Rock area and graduated from the Shell Rock Community High
School and went on to receive her B.A. degree in Teaching from
UNI. On June 7, 1942, she was united in marriage to John G.
Harms in the Ebenezer Lutheran Church of Butler Center. John
died on July 5, 1988, Alice then married Alvin Roelfs on June
15, 1990 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died in
January 1993. Alice was a teacher for 41 years, the last 30 in
Allison-Bristow Community School. She was a member of St. James
Lutheran Church in Allison, and she also had many hobbies. Alice
made quilts for all of her great nieces and nephews, loved her
flower gardens and kept a vegetable garden until this year when
illness prevented it. Alice and John raised, trained and raced
horses in the Hawkeye Colt Stakes Circuit for many years. Since
1989, Alice traveled with friends and family until starting
genealogy research on her family. She was very proud of being a
descendent of one of the first settlers of Butler County. Alice
was involved in numerous community activities including the
Butler County Fair. She was inducted into the Butler County Hall
of Fame in 2000. Alice gave us all a wonderful example of how to
give of ourselves to make a better world for those around us.
Survivors include: Two sisters: Lucille Hollen of Winterset,
Iowa and Mary Nieman of Shell Rock, Iowa; two hundred nieces,
nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and
nephews and thousands of students. She was preceded in death by
her parents, two husbands, siblings: George, Nelle, Dora,
Arthur, Francis, Robert, and Harland. Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at St. James Luthran
Church in Allison with Rev. Jerry Laehn and Peg Torrin Associate
in Ministry officiating. Special music for the funeral was
provided by orgnaist, Vivian Green accompanying soloist, Nick
Phillis. Pallbearers were Galen Hoodjer, Ken Hoodjer, Richard
Harms, Michael Hollen, Alexander Thompson and James Thompson.
Final resting place was in the River Side Cemetery, Shell Rock
Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison was in charge of
arrangements.

Rita Agnes Smith, age 76, of
Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of James J. and Agnes
Bolton Finnegan on April 27, 1926 in Guttenburg, Iowa. She
graduated from St. Boniface School in Ionia, Iowa. Rita married
John Smith January 22, 1946 at St. Boniface Church, Ionia, Iowa.
The couple first lived in Charles City where they both worked at
Fisher Cabinet Factory for two years. They moved to Nashua where
they lived for six years. Rita stopped working at the cabinet
factory after she had her first child. In 1955, they moved to
Clarksville. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in
Shell Rock until it closed. She is now a member of St. Mary’s in
Waverly. Rita was a homemaker who loved to go to rummage sales
and attend auctions. Her grandchildren were a great pleasure to
her. Rita died on Sunday, November 17, 2002, at Community
Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa. She was preceded in death by
her parents and two brothers, Patrick Finnegan and Jerry
Finnegan. Rita is survived by her husband, John (Jack) Smith of
Clarksville; one son, John W. Smith and his wife, Sara, Cedar
Falls, Iowa; four daughters, Kitty and her husband, Cal Yost,
Clarksville; Patty and her husband, Hank Eiklenborg, Aplington;
Mary and her husband, Richard DeWitt, Clarksville; and Cindy
Fesenmeyer, Clarksville; four sisters, Madonna and her husband,
G.E. Bynon, Torrance, California; Annette and her husband, Dale
Schmitz, Alta Vista, Iowa; Theresa and her husband, Joe
Linkenmeyer, Ionia, Iowa; and Della and her husband, Vic
Johnson, Nashua, Iowa; one brother, James J. Finnegan, Ionia,
Iowa; eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one
step-great-grandchild. Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m.,
Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church,
Waverly, Iowa with Father Mike Tauke officiating. Organist Ruth
Schluter accompanied St. Mary’s Choir in the Congregational
Hymns which were “Be Not Afraid,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “How
Great Thou Art.” Soloist Jolene Engel sang “Amazing Grace.”
Casketbearers were Gary Yost, Rodney Eiklenborg, Greg Eiklenborg,
Curtis DeWitt, Evan Fesenmeyer, Kyle Fesenmeyer and Corey
DeWitt. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa.

GARBES Anna Garbes age 87, of Waverly,
Iowa, formally of Clarksville, was born October 4, 1915, in
Butler County, Iowa near Clarksville, the daughter of Joe Abel
and Freeda Johnson Schrage. She received her education in a
country school near her home. Anna Schrage was united in
marriage with Albert Garbes on August 23, 1936, in Clarksville.
The couple first lived on a farm near Clarksville. They later
moved to a farm west of Waverly where they lived from 1946 until
1959. At that time, they moved to their farm northeast of
Clarksville where they lived until their retirement in 1974 and
moved into Clarksville. Anna was a member of St. John Lutheran
Church in Clarksville where she was a member of the Ladies Aid.
She was a homemaker who very much enjoyed cooking and baking.
Anna always had a big garden and loved her flowers. She enjoyed
playing bingo, listening to music and dancing. Her family and
many grandchildren were very special to her. Anna died on
Saturday, November 16, 2002, at Woodland Terrace, Bartels
Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa, of natural
causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Albert on September 21, 1993; a grandson, Robert Garbes, Jr.; a
granddaughter, Paula Sue Beekel; one brother, Hank Schrage; four
sisters, Elizabeth Mennenga, Lena Lubben, Tena Pickering and
Freeda Knock. She is survived by two sons, Robert Garbes and his
wife, Miriam, Shell Rock, Iowa; Richard Garbes and his wife,
Karen, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five daughters, JoAnn and her
husband, John Sherburne, Shell Rock, Iowa; Marlys and her
husband, Jim Beekel, Shell Rock, Iowa; Betty and her husband,
Eugene Dreesman, Clarksville, Iowa; Carol and her husband, Roger
Steinkraus, Waterloo, Iowa and DeeAnna Jenison, Waterloo, Iowa;
one brother, Abel Schrage and one sister, Hanah Koefed;
twenty-three grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m.,
Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Church,
Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. David Nelson officiating. Organist
was Lois Roose accompanied congregational hymns “How Great Thou
Art” and “Rock Of Ages”. Vocalist Darla Erskine sang “Amazing
Grace” and “Nearer My God To Thee.” Honorary Casketbearers were
Brett Garbes, Chad Kellogg, Grant Kellogg, Jeff Beekel and Brent

Lorna Ruth Powers, age 77, of
Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Joseph and Helen
(Kale) Brake on May 8, 1925, in Dubuque, Iowa. She graduated
high school and continued one year of Business College. On
January 14, 1950, Lorna Brake was united in marriage with John
L. Powers in Waterloo, Iowa. They made their home in Waterloo
for 25 years and in 1975 they moved to an acreage west of
Parkersburg. She had worked at Manpower, Rath Packing Co. and
also was a church secretary in a few local churches. Lorna was a
member of the Church of Christ in Cedar Falls, Iowa and was a
member of the Iowa Council for the Blind. She enjoyed writing
short stories and reading books to John. Lorna died Friday,
November 15, 2002, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo,
Iowa of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her
parents. Lorna is survived by her husband, John L. Powers of
Parkersburg, Iowa; one son, John Powers and his wife, Deb of
Yellville, Arkansas; one daughter, Lolynn Menuey and her
husband, Tom of Evansdale, Iowa; four grandchildren; and one
great-granddaughter. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at the Cedar Falls Church of Christ,
Cedar Falls, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Platt officiating. Organist
Helen Lund accompanied vocalists Judy Flores and Mark Williams
singing “In The Garden,” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”
Casketbearers were Thomas Menvey, Ray Powers, Jack Hoffman, and
Virgil Carson. Interment was in New Providence Cemetery, New
Providence, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was
in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the
family.
