Marcia Uhlenhopp 

Funeral services for Marcia Uhlenhopp, age 85, of Aplington Iowa, were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. Marcia died at 12:40 p.m., Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa, from complication of a stroke. Memorials may be directed towards the family of Marcia Uhlenhopp. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington was in charge of arrangements.

 Marcia Louise Uhlenhopp

Marcia Louise Uhlenhopp, age 85, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Karl B. and Hazel Davis Meickley on December 18, 1916, in Wibaux, Montana. After graduation from Aplington High School, she attended Iowa State University for two years. Marcia married Maurice Uhlenhopp on September 24, 1936, in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple lived in Kesley and ran the Kesley Mercantile for three years. They then moved to rural Aplington where they farmed the Meickley Family Farm in 1939. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. At her church she served as an Elder along with her mother. She enjoyed gardening and working in her orchard as well as raising sheep and cats. She loved to cook, explore new recipes and she enjoyed flying with her husband. Marcia died at 12:40 p.m., Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Rolling Green Village, Nevada, Iowa, from complications following a stroke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Hazel Meickley. She is survived by her husband, Maurice of Nevada, Iowa; two sons, Eldon and his wife, Patty Uhlenhopp of Ames, Iowa and Kent Uhlenhopp of Campbell, California; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a sister, Wilburta and her husband, Dain Carr, of Playa Del Rey, California. Funeral Services were at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Iowa. Rev. Robert Schnucker and Rev. Charles Orr officiated, Lenee’ Pollock was the organist and the Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Come Home.” The Casketbearers were Harlan Schuck, Tom Pollock, Russ Meyer, Keith Stockdale, Karl Uhlenhopp and A.J. Scriven. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington were in charge of the arrangements.

 Frieda Wiegman

Frieda Wiegman, 93, of Hampton, Iowa passed away May 28, 2002 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. Frieda was born January 12, 1909 in rural Greene, Iowa to Henry Voigts and Louise Schrage (step mother Minnie Schrage). Frieda attended schools in rural Butler County. On February 16, 1930, Frieda married Frank Wiegman in rural Greene-Vilmar, Iowa. Frieda worked for 25 years as a cook in the Greene School system. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church in Hampton, Iowa, and enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, and cooking. Frieda is survived by her two daughters: Gloria and husband, Curt Koth of Sibley, Iowa and Karolyn and husband, Gary Brower of Geneva, Iowa; three sisters: Mabel Wilken of Sacramento, California, Darlene and husband Tom McWhirter of Traer, Iowa, Donna and husband Leonard Burrier of Waverly, Iowa; a sister-in-law: Norma Voigts of Greene, Iowa; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Clarence and Marvin Voigts; two sisters Leona Voigts and Lilly Bauman. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 31, 2002 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, rural Greene, Iowa with Rev. Mark Walker and Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Florence Vieker accom-panying Jody Harris and Mindy Clark. Pallbearers were Keith Koth, Jody Harris, Roger Keeler, Dan Burrier, Robert Knock and Jeff Schultz. Final resting place was in the St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, rural Greene, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Harlo Folkert Poppen

Harlo Folkert Poppen, 77, of Vining, Minnesota, passed away May 29, 2002 at his home near Vining. Harlo Poppen was born in Jefferson Township, Butler County Iowa on August 20, 1925 to Herman and Bertha Folkers Poppen. On April 27, 1968 he married Norma Jean Frank in Las Vegas, Nevada. Harlo worked for the U.S. Government in the Defense Department before retiring in Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Norma; a brother, Emory and sister-in-law, Irene of Allison and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hemran and Bertha Poppen and Aunt Dora Poppen of Allison. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at St. William’s Catholic Church in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota with Father Jeff Ethen officiating. Burial was in the Parkers Prairie Cemetery.

 Lucile M. Best

Lucile M. Best, 83, of Waverly, Iowa and formerly of Shell Rock and Clarksville, Iowa passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community of natural causes. Lucile Myrtle Best was born on March 22, 1919, the daughter of Howard L. and Millie (Arns) Briden in Janesville, Iowa. She graduated from Finchford High School. On March 7, 1940 she was united in marriage to Walter Linn Best in Nashua, Iowa at the Little Brown Church. The couple farmed near Bremer for 3 years and northwest of Shell Rock for 2 years before moving to the home place and farming there for 33 years. Lucile raised chickens and eggs but most especially loved her gardening and raising flowers. They later sold the farm and moved into Shell Rock. She became a resident of Bartels in July of 1998. Survivors are one sister, Carol McBride of Mt Carmel, Illinois; one brother, Ralph Briden and his wife, Helen of Cedar Falls, Iowa; one niece, Donna Kay Elliot and her husband, Larry of Mt Carmel, Illinois; two nephews, Keith Briden and his wife, Kim of Waterloo, Iowa and Charles D. McBride and his wife, Ruby of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter in 1981; and by one sister, Mildred Briden. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2002 at 1:30pm at the Unity Presbyterian Church in rural Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Reuben Topp officiating. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 7, 2002 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock, Iowa and one hour prior to services at the church. Thelma V. Kleinschmidt

Thelma V. Kleinschmidt, 70, formerly of Greene and Nashua, died at 11:48 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Heritage Care Center in Mason City of natural causes. Thelma Violet (Wiebke) Klein-schmidt was born March 22, 1932, in Butler County, rural Clarskville, Iowa. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Clara (Spier) Wiebke. Thelma was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Clarksville on May 1, 1932, and later confirmed there. She graduated from the Plainfield High School in 1950 and worked for Lutheran Mutual Insurance Company in Waverly. On December 28, 1952, she was united in marriage to Norman K. Kleinschmidt at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarskville. To this union, three children were born. Norman and Thelma made their home and farmed east of Greene for 37 years. The moved to an acreage east of Nashua in 1989. Norman died on November 30, 1994. In February 1995, Thelma moved to the Heritage Care Center in Mason City due to health reasons. Thelma loved working on the farm next to her husband. She excelled in cooking, loved to garden, and spending time with her family. She was a farm wife and homemaker. Her faith in God and the love of her family and friends kept her going. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman and her parents, Paul and Clara Wiebke. Survivors include her daughter and husband: Christa Ann and Ronald Guthrie of Mason City; two sons and their wives: Robert and Vicki Kleinschmidt of Holmen, Wisconsin, and Richard and April Kleinschmidt of Nashua; a sister and husband, Eileen Joe and Lloyd Korte of Cedar Falls; two sister-in-laws: Norma Noel and Gladys Beninga of Greene; and seven grandchildren: Christopher and Justin Witter; Kelly, Amy, and Kyle Kleinschmidt; and Seth and Alex Kleinschmidt; and many relatives and friends. Memorials may be directed to the family or St. John’s Lutheran Church/Western Douglas Plainfield, Iowa in memory of Thelma V. Kleinschmidt.  Pauline K. Shaw

 Pauline K. Shaw, 88, of Waverly, Iowa, died Friday morning, June 7, 2002, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital where she had been a patient for 6 days. She was born on September 14, 1913, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Harrison R. and Nora Mae (Allen) Hubbs. She attended school in Akron and graduated from the Akron High School in 1931. She attended the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, where she received her Registered Nursing Degree in 1934. On August 7, 1934, she married Robert F. Shaw in South Dakota and the couple made their home in Iowa city where Pauline worked for the hospital and Robert continued working on his Medical Degree. They moved to Seattle, Washington, where Robert completed his internship at Seattle General Hospital. They moved to Clarksville where Dr. Shaw began his practice. After several years in Clarskville, the family moved to Waverly where Dr. Shaw continued his career at Rohlf Memorial Clinic. Pauline cared for their home and raised their family while her husband worked hard at the clinic. During his career, Dr. Shaw would ask Pauline for help with the young mothers and their newborns, assistance which Pauline loved to provide. Dr. Shaw died in 1981, and Pauline continued to make her home in Waverly, volunteering her time to the Red Cross and other community health care concerns. Pauline was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. She was also a member of P.E.O., a Literature Club, and several bridge clubs in Waverly. She was known for her great sense of humor, and smiling way. Pauline loved her friends dearly and was a great confidant to them. She also enjoyed watching and feeding the wild birds in her yard, especially the song birds. But her greatest passion, was her family. A family she loved, enjoyed caring for, and worry over. Pauline is survived by her children: Bruce Shaw of San Pedro, California; Penelope Shaw of Rockford, Illinois; Dr. Barry Shaw and wife, Dianne, of Birmingham, Alabama; Kirk and Marilyn Shaw of Cedar Falls; and Paula and Jeff Francis of Iowa City; ten grandchildren: Allister Matheson, Ashley Shaw, Mark Shaw, Mike Shaw, Michele Shaw-Letzkus, Timothy Shaw, Jennifer Shaw-Thierman, Sara Shaw, Rebecca Shaw, Nicole Francis-Dearborn, and four great grandchildren: Jakob Shaw, Alexander Shaw, Daniel Shaw, and Melodi Shaw. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Dr. Robert E. Shaw. Memorial services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. The body was cremated and private family burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. John A. Jacobs Sr.

John A. Jacobs Sr., 87, of Nora Springs, Iowa died Sunday June 9, 2002 at the Nora Springs Care Center. Funeral services will be Thursday June 13, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rudd United Methodist Church, with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Rudd. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Family suggests memorials be made to Rudd United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa. John was born Dec. 11, 1914 in rural Rudd the son of H. Royal and Myrtie (Berk) Jacobs. He graduated from the Rudd High School in 1934. He was united in marriage to Leona Lacour Feb. 28, 1940 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. They were married for 62 years. John started his lifelong farming career at Bristow, later moving to Rudd where they resided until moving to Nora Springs at Summit Heights Assisted Living in Feb. 99. He loved nature, caring for his livestock, taking grandkids for walks and in later years enjoyed reading books and watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball games. He lived life to its fullest and enjoyed his family. He was a life long active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church and was a 4-H leader for many years. Francis Kelly Clemens

Francis Kelly Clemens, 86, of Dumont, Iowa passed away June 20, 2002 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa of natural causes. Francis was born September 22, 1915 in Barnsville, Minnesota to Frank Kelly Clemens and Lena Heeren. He attended schools in Barnsville and Dumont. Francis married Erna Claire Fransham on August 18, 1939 in Hampton, Iowa. Francis worked as a truck driver for Allied Construction in Charles City. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, charter member of Dumont Lions Club, and a member of the Dumont Historical Society. Francis enjoyed being with his grandsons, enjoyed gardening, visiting with people, and enjoyed his family. He is survived by his wife: Erna Clemens of Dumont; daughter: Kay and husband, Phil Garman of Dumont; two grandsons: Brian Garman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Thomas Garman of Cedar Falls; and sister-in-law: Doris Cuvelier of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 24, 2002 at the Dumont United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Shaffer officiating. Organist was Phyllis Gronberg and ushers were John Bushbaum and Charles Gronberg. Arnold William Frey

Arnold William Frey, age 83, of New Hartford, Iowa, was born the son of Fred and Tilla (Nieman) Frey on April 13, 1919, on the family farm in rural New Hartford. He received his education from a rural country school near his home. Arnold’s father, Fred died when he was a young man. His responsibilities increased dram-atically and also sooner than usual. He grew up on the family farm and worked it his entire life. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. In his spare time Arnold enjoyed wood working. At 6:00 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, Arnold died at his home in rural New Hartford from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Marian Frey on November 13, 1987. Arnold is survived by a few cousins. Memorial Services were at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Anthony Bradsath of the Calvary Baptist church in Parkersburg. Hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.

Paul Gregory Smith 

Paul Gregory Smith, 31, of Dumont, Iowa passed away June 22, 2002 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus in Mason City, Iowa. He was born on March 14, 1971 in Belmond, Iowa to Maynard Smith and Ruby Ella Anderson. Paul attended schools in Dumont. Paul married Betty Mejia on May 23, 1992 in Dumont, Iowa. He worked at Seabee’s as a welder. Paul was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. He was an avid motorcycle rider and belonged to the ABATE motorcycle group, and also enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycle rallies. Paul enjoyed watching his children’s activities and spending time with his family and also enjoyed bow hunting and other types of hunting and fishing. A special dog named Sugar would go hunting with him. Paul is survived by his wife: Betty Smith of Dumont; two daughters: Alicia Smith and Alysia Smith of Dumont; mother: Ruby Ella Smith of Mason City; two sisters: Shirley and husband, Paul McLaughlin of Belmond and Shila and husband, Thomas Trunkhill of Mason City; brother: Marlin and wife, Darcy Smith of Dumont; and nieces and nephews: Troy, Tara, Shawna, Krystal, Rachael, Lukas, Josh, Erica, Johnathan, Jordan, D.J., Tyler, Ashley, Haley, Gunner, and Brianna. Paul was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, and his father, Maynard. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at the Hampton United Methodist Church with Rev. Douglas Tharpe and Rev. Michael Shaffer officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Roger Mollenbeck accompanying the songs: “Free Bird”, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”, and “Only God Knows Why.” Ushers were Ben Bills, David Gronewold, Matt Kerr and Jeff Aukes. Pallbearers were Dick Poling, Roger Grover, Blair Noelting, Terry Walker, Russ Gruelke, and Rich Martin. Honorary pallbearers were Tim Letzring, Jim Mejia, Rich Thomas, Troy Buseman, Jeff Muller, Greg Mason and Tony Nicolaus. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont in charge of arrangements.

Lucille (Hopkes) Miller

Lucille (Hopkes) Miller, age 77, of Dumont, Iowa died on June 23, 2002 at the Franklin General Nursing Facility, Hampton, Iowa, of natural causes. On July 6, 1924, she was born the daughter of Hopke and Tillie Hopkes in Butler County. She was educated in the rural Butler County Schools. On March 25, 1941, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Miller at the Dumont Reformed Parsonage. She was a homemaker all her life. Lucille was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church, taught Sunday School for a number of years, was a member of the Guild for many years, and also sang in the choir. Survivors include a daughter: Beverly and husband, Virgil Crawford of Ackley; grandchildren: Debra Dralle and husband, Troy of Allison, Terry Crawford and his wife, Jamie of Allison, Tammy Hearn and special friend, Dean Pettit of Grundy Center and Timothy Miller of Rowan; great-grandchildren: Rachel Dralle, Crystal and Camie Crawford, Janey, David, and Michael Hearn and Joseph Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters: Janice Ruth and Lorraine Judith; one sister, Mrs. Pete (Arlean) Viet; and one brother, Fred Hopkes. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 27, 2002 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Robert Scholten officiating. Music was provided by Cheryl Scholten and Jim Siebrands. Pallbearers were Jim Siebrands, Dennis Miller, Don Campbell, John Campbell, Harold Dean Miller and Russell Ubben. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery.

Betty Ann Cockerham

Betty Ann Cockerham, age 75, of the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, and formerly of Eldora, Iowa was born the daughter of Clarence A. and Osie (Wheeldon) Cockerham on June 17, 1927, in Eldora, Iowa. She received her education from the Waterloo West High School in Waterloo, Iowa, where she was an honor student. She continued her education and graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Betty lived in Eldora, Hubbard and Waterloo, Iowa, where she assisted with care of the elderly people and also did private home care with the elderly for many years. Betty was an artist and enjoyed painting signs for people. She loved to listen to Christian music and often she helped others in need. She became a resident of the Maple Manor Village in Aplington in October of 2000. At 4:00 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, Betty died at the Maple Manor Village of natural causes. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at the Eldora Cemetery in Eldora, Iowa.

June A. Seibert

June A. Seibert, 85, of Dumont, Iowa died on June 24, 2002 at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, Iowa, of natural causes. On April 5, 1917, she was born the daughter of Charles A. and Mabel J. (Jones) Harper of Allison. She was raised in the Hansell area and received her education in the Hansell Community Schools, Hansell, Iowa. On February 20, 1935, June was united in marriage to Edwin C. Seibert in Hampton, Iowa. She was a homemaker all her life and was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. Survivors include: Husband, Edwin Seibert, of Dumont; daughter: Barbara and husband, Robert Card of Dumont; son: Duane and wife, Mary Lou Seibert of Rudd, Iowa; five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two half sisters, two half brothers, one brother, and one sister. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2002 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Michael Shaffer officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the congregational singing. Usher were Harold Reents and Harley Cuvelier and pallbearers were Rick Card, Stanley Fox, Tim Seibert, Todd Seibert, Mark Gerdes and Robert Fischer. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery.

 Robert Geist 

Robert Geist, age 75, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of George Elmer and Kathryn (Hayes) Geist on March 30, 1927, in Waterloo, Iowa. He received his education from East Waterloo High School. Robert served in the United States Army from 1945 – 1947 as a Railway Security Guard with the occupying army in Europe. He graduated from high school in 1948 after serving in the U.S. Army. He was a 51 year member of the American Legion Post # 285 in Parkersburg. On June 2, 1949, Robert was united in marriage with Hazel E. Turner at her parent’s home in Waterloo. They made their home in Waterloo after their marriage and later moved to Parkersburg in 1961. Robert worked for Iowa Public Service Company as a Specialized Gas Service Man from 1948 until 1984 when he went on disability due to his health. He retired in 1991. Robert attended the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg. He enjoyed singing with church choirs and was request by many to sing at weddings and funerals. He also had sung in Dance Bands at the Electric Park Ball Room in Waterloo. Robert enjoyed reading, writing poetry, acting in plays and fixing up cars. He loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. At 10:10 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, Robert died at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of congestive heart failure. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Geist on November 4, 1977; two sons, Thomas Robert Geist on January 27, 1982 and Anthony Edward Geist on March 4, 1992; one daughter, Kristine Kay Stewart April 11, 1996; his parents; one brother, G. Rodney Geist on February 22, 1997. Robert is survived by one son, William “Bill” Geist of Parkersburg, Iowa; one daughter, Sandy Peters and her husband, Gerald of Aplington, Iowa; six grandchildren (Clint, Josh and Marci Peters)(Angela and Brian Geist)(Lee Stewart); one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Peters; one brother, John E. “Jack” Geist and his wife, Shirley of Waterloo, Iowa and one daughter-in-law, Joyce Geist, Waterloo, Iowa. A Celebration of life was held Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg with Pastor Neal Ooms officiating. The organist was Cathy Meyers and Stan Thompson sang “Amazing Grace” and “One Day at a Time.” The Congregational Hymns will be “How Great Thou Art” & “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.”

Delores Mariedith Winkey

Delores “Dee” Mariedith Winkey, 76, of Aplington, Iowa, died on June 29, 2002 at the Allison Health Care Center from complications of cancer. Delores was born on April 24, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of David M. and Mary Catherine (Fuller) Hill. Dee was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa. Dee attended the Waterloo School System and on September 23, 1951, she was united in marriage to Allen Clarence Winkey in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple made their home in Aplington, and on April 26, 2002, Dee became a resident of the Allison Health Care Center. Dee is survived by her husband, Allen of the Allison Manor Care Center, Allison, Iowa; five daughters, Judy Miller of Shell Rock, Sharon White of Phoenix, Arizona, Deb Bennett and her husband, Duane of Waverly, Di Miller and her husband, Randy of Clarksville, Denise Rethamel and her husband, Bill of Muscatine; two sons, Steve Winkey and his wife, Diane of Aplington, David Winkey and his wife Dianne of Lockhardt, Texas; 21 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Maddex and her husband, Don of Waterloo, Cathy Wentworth and her husband, Woody of Waterloo; and three brothers, Martin Hill and his wife, Ruth of Morrison, Iowa, Bill Hill of Chesterton, Indiana and Larry Hill of Rockford, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Dexter Allen Miller, her brother Bernard Hill and three sisters, LaDonna Truax, Sheila Faust and Rosemary Faust. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Walter Brunken officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock. Memorials may be directed to the family, where a memorial fund will be established at a later date.

Annette Marie Smith

Annette Marie Smith, 80, of Allison, Iowa died June 30, 2002 at the Allison Care Center of natural causes. On September 8, 1921, she was born the daughter of Chris and Kate (Frerichs) Fleshner in Butler Center, Iowa. She received her education in the rural Butler Center Schools and attended Gates Business College. On October 7, 1943, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Smith in Waterloo, Iowa. She was a bookkeeper for the family owned business. Annette was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison and the Allison Women’s Club. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Smith of Allison; son: Robert Smith of Dallas, Texas; daughter: Jan Heffron of Allison; sister: Arleen R. Schaeffer of Marshalltown, Iowa and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Carrie Dailey. Memorials may be directed to the family. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Associate in Ministry Peg Torrin officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Cecil Radcliffe accompanying soloist, Mary Dailey Gottlieb. The flower committee was Ann Chinander and Deb McWhirter. Pallbearers were Gene Chinander, Bret Chinander, Erick Chinander, Stacy Chinander, David McWhirter and Ross McWhirter. Honorary pallbearers were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jacobs, Mrs. Rowen Allan, Mrs. Javotte Codner, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ressler and Mr. and Mrs. G.G. Roose. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery.

 Delos Dale Miller

Delos Dale Miller, 74, of Ackley, Iowa passed away June 30, 2002 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa, of cancer. He was born on November 15, 1927 in Butler County, Iowa to Claus and Reka (Lursen) Miller. Delos was baptized as an infant at the Presbyterian Church in Kesley, Iowa. He attended country school in Madison Township. At age 18 he enlisted in the United States Army. After taking his basic training at Camp Poke, Louisiana, he was transferred into the Medical Corps. He took his training at Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. After his training he was sent to the 172nd Station Hospital at Sendai, Japan, and this is where he finished his tour of duty serving in the Armed Forces. On November 14, 1949, Delos was united in marriage to Virginia Ann Lauterbach at the Reformed Church in Stout, Iowa. To this union four children were born. He is survived by his wife Virginia of Ackley; three sons: Dennis and wife, Debbra of Ackley, Norman and wife, Vickie of Grinnell, and Vernon of Ackley; daughter: Patsy Miller of Ackley; six grandchildren Denise and Trevor Willims, Daniel Miller and fiancee Megan Dewine, Andrew, Valerie and Jill Miller and Tim Merfeld; one sister: Lela and husband, Art Siebrands of Dumont, Iowa; one brother: Harold of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brother: Fay, Kenneth, and Donald. Delos attended the Dumont Reformed Church for over 60 years and became a member in 1957. He served as treasurer of Sunday School for many years, was on the property and building committees, and also served on the Dumont Elevator board of directors. Delos lived on the same farm for 60 years. He and his wife farmed all their married life, retiring in 1993. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Robert Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accompanying soloist, Cheryl Scholten. Pallbearers were Alan Meyer, Robert Gerdes, Marvin Nolte, Russell Ubben, Johnny Muller and Michael Thornburgh, Jr. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with the Dumont Legion performing the Flag Folding Ceremony.

Raymond Richard Behrends

Raymond Richard Behrends, 75, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Richard and Tina Brinkman Behrends on January 10, 1927, near Bristow, in rural Butler County, Iowa. He graduated from Bristow High School in 1945. Raymond was united in marriage with Marlys Kalkwarf on February 7, 1975, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard. He worked for Rath Packing Company in Waterloo for 38 years, unloading trucks, until 1987. He then cleaned the medical centers in Parkersburg, Aplington and Allison until he became ill in March of 2002. He was in fellowship with Christians at Hitesville Gospel Hall and he received the Lord as his Savior August 30, 1989, and was baptized. Raymond died at Allen Memorial Hospital on Sunday, June 30, 2002, at 4:26 p.m. of complications of pneumonia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Tina Behrends; two brothers, Henry and Clarence Behrends; and one sister, Helen Hines. He is survived by his wife, Marlys Behrends of Parkersburg, Iowa; two brothers, Russell Behrends and his wife, Alice, of Waterloo, Iowa and Harvey Behrends of Waterloo, Iowa; and two sisters, LaVon Fritze of Clarksville, Iowa and Mary and her husband, Skip Mulford of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, Iowa. Speakers were Mr. Robert Orr and Mr. Russell Nesbitt. Congregational Hymns were “Old Rugged Cross,” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casketbearers were Dallas Kluiter, LeRoy Kramer, Wes Swieter, Tom Christopherson, LaVern Kluiter and Kenny Tack. Ushers were Bud Williams and Larry Brandt. Flower Committee was Betty Williams and Diane Brandt. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ackley, Iowa.

Marie (Mary) Louise DeBower

Marie (Mary) Louise DeBower, 95, of Allison, Iowa passed away July 4, 2002 at the Allison Care Center in Allison. She was born August 24, 1906 in rural Bristow, Iowa to William and Sophie (Dralle) Rodenbeck. Mary’s parents passed away when she was a small girl, and she was raised by her Aunt and her husband, Hiko and Minnie (Dralle) Folkers. Mary attended rural country school in Butler County, Iowa. She was married to Paul DeBower, Jr. on January 30, 1927 in Allison. They lived on a farm Northwest of Allison until they moved to Allison in March 1948. Mary used her talents of tatting, knitting, crocheting, cooking and gardening and shared it with her many relatives and friends. She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. Mary is survived by three daughters: Lois McDowell of Allison, Janice and husband, Raymond Grapp of Bristow, and Joyce and husband, Vernon Leerhoff of Allison. Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandson: William and wife, Lori McDowell and daughter Morgan; Deborah and husband, William Bleeker; Carol and husband, Dan Smith and son Cody; Janell and husband, Scottie Steffen and daughter Danielle; Susan Grapp; Cheryl and husband, Kevin Stevens and children Jake and Holly; Joan and husband, Bruce Voigts and children Matthew and Michelle; Mark and wife, Shelley Leerhoff and children Jason and Darcy. Step Grandchildren: Lauren and Sara; Great Great Grandson, Skyler; David and wife, Sue Leerhoff and children Anthony, Nathanael, Christy and Noah. Sisters-in-law: Anna Rodenbeck, Irene Rodenbeck, Erna Lawyer and Siena Feltus. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, William McDowell, one sister Minnie Edeker, four brothers William, Herman, Alfred and Arthur Rodenbeck. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 8, 2002 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jerry Laehn and Associate in Ministry Peg Torrin officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Cecil Radcliffe accompanying the congregational singing. The flower committee was Henrietta Finke and Alma Jacobs. Pallbearers were Herbert Freese, Pat Feltus, Lester Schrage, Kirk Johnson, Russell Seehusen and Donald Rodenbeck. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery.

Beulah Dena Wordes

Beulah Dena Wordes, age 86, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Orin and Rena Frerichs Hinders on April 13, 1916, near Clarksville in Butler County, Iowa. She received her education through the 8th grade in a rural school near her home. She was united in marriage to Jennings Wordes in Renville, Minnesota. The couple lived in Renville for four years before relocating to Butler County, Iowa. She was a cook and waitress, having worked at Pete and Shorty’s and at the Clarksville Café, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville. At 8:25 p.m., July 4, 2002, Beulah died at the Hampton Health Care Center, Hampton, Iowa, of cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings, in December, 1983 and one brother, Pete Hinders. Beulah is survived by two sons, Dean Wordes and his wife, Maggie of Allison, Iowa and Dennis Wordes and his wife, Deb of Dysart, Iowa; two daughters, Shirley Wordes of Teague, Texas and Rose Adelmund and her husband, Rich, of Greene, Iowa; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen officiating. Organist was Lois Roose. Congregational Hymns were “Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casketbearers were Duane Wordes, Mark Wordes, Paul Wordes, Brian Wordes, Danny Wordes and Jim Wordes. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa.

Johannes Alfred Meester

Johannes Alfred Meester, age 81, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Thomas K. and Anna Peters Meester on September 23, 1920, in Pleasant Valley Township, Grundy County, Iowa. He received his education in a rural school near his home. On November 25, 1943, he married Dorothy Mavis Ross in Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, Holland, Iowa. He was a life-long member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, west of Fern, Iowa. The couple lived on the farm in rural Grundy County until Joe semi-retired in February of 1991 and they moved to Parkersburg. Johannes was a farmer all his life and also loved to fish and hunt. He very much loved doing things with his grandchildren and often had peppermints in his pocket for the children. On Thursday, July 4, 2002, Johannes died at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Etta Renken and Anna Murra and four brothers, Henry K., John K., Herman J. and James C. Meester. Johannes is survived by his wife, Mavis Meester of Parkersburg, Iowa; two daughters, Carol (James) Bolin, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Kaylene (David) Bern, Dike, Iowa; three sons, Robert Meester, Grundy Center, Iowa; Leon (Jean) Meester, Holland, Iowa and Russell (Joan) Meester, Holland, Iowa; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one sister, Tena Paterni, of the Grundy Center Nursing Home, Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, July 8, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, Holland, Iowa with Rev. Russell Muilenburg officiating. Organist, Alvina Walterman accompanied vocalist Leland Langenberg in “Old Rugged Cross.” Congregational Hymns were “In The Garden” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”. Casketbearers were Casey Meester, Camron Meester, Travis Meester, Daniel Bolin, Jess Michaelsen and Owen Meester. Interment was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Holland.
