Lena Faye Klatt

Lela Faye Klatt, 79, of Portland, Oregon, died on May 2, 2002. Mrs. Klatt was born the daughter of David and Grace (Hickle) Alexander on June 7, 1922 in Waverly, Iowa. She married Theodore Klatt in Omaha, Nebraska in 1945. Lela worked for Griffin Container as office manager for over 20 years in Arizona. She moved with her husband to Portland, Oregon in 1994 and he died the following year in 1995. She was a long time member of the Eastern Star. She is survived by three daughters: Betty Jane Thurman, Cathryn Engstrom and Peggy Polacek; two sons: David Klatt and James Klatt; fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Research Foundation. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Pegg, Paxson & Springer Funeral Chapel in Beaverton, Oregon. Interment was in the Willamette National Cemetery. Pegg, Paxson & Springer Chapel of Beaverton, Oregon was in charge of arrangements.


Helen Ida Kratcmer

Helen Ida Kratchmer, age 94, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Grabein) Peters, on December 1, 1907, in Bremer County, near Frederika, Iowa. She received her education from a rural country school near her home. On March 8, 1928, Helen Peters was united in marriage with John W. Kratchmer at the Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly, Iowa. They made their home and farmed near Shell Rock and Clarksville, Iowa, until 1964 when they moved to Clarksville. In 1978 they celebrated 50 years of marriage. While helping on the farm, Helen also worked as a clerk at the former Poppe’s Grocery Store in Clarksville, later she was a cook at the Waverly Air Base and then a clerk at Ken’s Grocery Store in Clarksville. She was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, where she was active in the women’s fellowship and was a member of the Antioch Aid Society. She enjoyed making afghans, playing cards with her friends and family, and especially she liked cooking family dinners. Helen died on Thursday, May 9, 2002, at 1:00 a.m. at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1979; a grandson, Mark Kratchmer; her parents; one brother, Fred Peters; and one sister, Leota Whitney. Helen is survived by two sons, Dale Kratchmer and his wife, Norma of Grantsburg, Wisconsin and Darrell Kratchmer and his wife, Eddina of Waverly, Iowa; five grandchildren, Michael, David, and Kathy Humphrey, Barbara Strauss and Steve Kratchmer; seven great grandchildren, Michael Jr., Julie, Jackie, Amanda, and Robert Humphrey, Ben and Angela Kratchmer; two sisters, Freida Bergman of Hot Spring Village, Arkansas and Gertrude Miller of Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral Services were at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2002, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. David Walters officiating. Organist Sharon Leerhoff accompanied congregational hymns “How Great Thou Art,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “Abide With Me”. Honorary Casketbearer was Harvey Poppe. Casketbearers were Lee Peters, Lester Peters, Richard D. Miller, Jim Peters, Eldon Kratchmer and Euane Wylam. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery rural Clarksville, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements


Viola Gieseke

Viola Gieseke, age 81, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Carl and Hattie (Bruns) Gieseke on May 31, 1920, in Butler County, near Aplington, Iowa. She received her elementary education from a country rural school near her home and then graduated from the Aplington High School. Viola was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church. In her earlier years she was a pianist at the church and was a secretary of the Ladies Aid. For most of her life, she lived with and helped take care of her father. For a few years she worked at a seed company. In her spare time she had a great passion for reading. Viola died at 9:15 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2002, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, LeRoy Gieseke. Viola is survived by three nephews, Lee Gieseke and his wife, Evelyn of Derby, Kansas; Lowell Gieseke and his wife, Gayle of Edenton, North Carolina, and Larry Gieseke and his wife, Diane of Richfield, Minnesota; five nieces and nephews, Mark, Lisa, Heather, Nathan and Tony Gieseke. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 12, 2002, at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Donald Patet officiating. Organist Becky Ostercamp accompanied Congregational Hymns, “The Old Rugged Cross,” “In The Garden,” and “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were Alan Ostercamp, Larry Lindeman, Joel Frey, Howard Huisinga, Bob Frey and Rod Sents. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements.


Dale Van Slyke

Dale Van Slyke, age 89, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Joel and Eleanor May Skinner Van Slyke on July 6, 1912, in Butler County, near Clarksville, Iowa. He received his education in a school near his home. Dale married Vivian F. Morse on July 3, 1947. The couple lived in Clarksville for 26 years after their marriage, then moved to Apache Junction, Arizona and Waterloo, Iowa. After Vivian’s death in 1992, Dale moved back to Clarksville. He became a resident of Shell Rock Care Center in November 2001. Dale was a veteran of the United States Army from April 29, 1942, until September 20, 1944, and earned the rank of Tech 5. He served in World War II during which he was stationed in the South Pacific at New Caledonia. He received an honorable discharge and was disabled due to his service. Dale was a member of Church of Christ in Clarksville where he was baptized May 16, 1998. He was a lifetime member of Post #1623 Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of American Legion Post #138 in Waterloo. He enjoyed spending time traveling, buying new cars, playing pool, dancing with his wife, Vivian and spending time with his family. Dale died at 9:00 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, on April 26, 1992; his parents; four sisters, Marjorie, Lucille, Dorothy and Velma and three brothers, Mark, Vern and Paul Van Slyke. He is survived by two sons, Randy Allan Van Slyke and his wife, Linda, of Jesup, Iowa and Dave Atherton and his wife, Linda, of Mason City, Iowa; two daughters, Deborah Jo Reints and her husband, Richard of Clarksville, Iowa and Anita Nutt and her husband, Matt of Clarksville, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Kurt, Cody and Colt Van Slyke; Debra and Patrick Atherton; Kimberly Nieman and Nicole Hardy; Bryan Nutt, Kelley Slemp, Randy Nutt and Katie Nutt and five great-grandchildren, Jake Nieman, Cade Hardy, Austin and Drew Nutt and Jareb Slemp. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 13, 2002, at the Church of Christ, Clarksville, Iowa, with Pastor Val Swinton officiating. Pianist Audrey Rosenwinkle accompanied congregational hymns “Amazing Grace,” “Rock of Ages,” and “In The Garden.” A duet of Audrey Rosenwinkle and Delores Siefken sang “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.” Casketbearers were Kurt Van Slyke, Cody Van Slyke, Colt Van Slyke, Pete Sinram, John Voss and Joel Hardy. Honorary casketbearers were held great-grandchildren, Cade Hardy, Jake Nieman, Austin Nutt, Jareb Slemp and Drew Nutt. Military Rites were provided by Waterloo VFW Post #1623 and American Legion Post #138. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.


 MAAKESTAD

Karen K. Maakestad, age 62, of Clarksville and formerly of Osage died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. Karen was born March 16, 1940 in Osage the daughter of Louie and Margaret (Lonergan) Kindschuh. She graduated from Osage High School. Karen married Lowell Gene Maakestad in Mitchell. A daughter Lori (Maakestad) Krull was born to this union. Karen was employed as a nurse throughout the midwest during her career as an L.P.N. The last 10 years she was employed at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly. She enjoyed craftwork, sewing, antiques and rummage sales. Funeral Services were held at Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Interment was on Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell with Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in charge. She is survived by Best Friend, Mike Krull of Clarksville; 2 Granddaughters, Cody Lenz and her son Dyvante Smith of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Cheyenne Rose Krull of Osage; A Grandson: Lucas L. Krull of Osage; Son-in-law John Krull of Osage; A sister: Marlene Wagner and her husband Bob of Mitchell; A brother Richard Kindschuh and his wife Rose of San Antonio, TX and many uncles, aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lowell; a daughter Lori Krull and a brother Ronnie Kindschuh.


 BRUNS

Susan Hall Bruns, age 88, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Otto and Mary Endelman Brocka on June 1, 1913, in Butler County, near Vilmer, Iowa, north of Allison. She received her education in a school near her home. Susan married Leo Hall December 27, 1936, in Galena, Illinois. Then Leo and Susan farmed near Rockford, Iowa where Leo died in 1960. In 1961, she moved to Charles City, Iowa. She married Henry Bruns on January 15, 1969, at the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville. Susan and Henry made their home in Clarksville. She was a cook at the 11th Street Chautauqua Nursing Home in Charles City and later at the Butler County Home until it closed in 1975. She was a member of the U & I Club in Clarksville. Susan loved to go camping and fishing and she mostly enjoyed being with her grandchildren and friends. She also liked raising plants and gardening and especially she liked cooking for her family. Susan moved to the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville in 1994. She died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at 3:50 p.m. at the Community Nursing Home of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leo Hall in 1960; her parents; and five brothers, Harry, Floyd, Ernest, Alvin and Melvin Brocka; a daughter-in-law, Maxine Hall; and a son-in-law, Dan Hawke. Susan is survived by her husband, Henry Bruns, Clarksville, Iowa; two sons, Leon Hall and his wife, Shirley of Charles City, Iowa and Larry Hall of Rockford, Iowa; three daughters, Mariel Kilby and her husband, Ken of Charles City, Iowa; Maureen Schultz of Iowa City, Iowa and Marcia Jacobsen and her husband, Jim of Charles City, Iowa; three step-daughters, Betty Whitney and her husband, Dennis, of Clarksville, Iowa; Dorothy Wedeking and her husband, Leo, of Clarksville, Iowa and Jean Henning and her husband, Bill, of Waverly, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Hinders and her husband, Ben, of Allison, Iowa; Esther Schmidt and her husband, Paul, of Allison, Iowa and Marvel Landers and her husband, Gaylen of Greene, Iowa; two brothers, LaVern Brocka and his wife, Ruth, of Allison, Iowa; Alfred Brocka and his wife, Viola, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Brocka of Bristow, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Iowa. Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen will be officiating, Lola Clark will be the organist and the congregational hymns will be “Faith of Our Fathers,” “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace” & “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.” The Casketbearers will be Mike Hall, Wayne Reis, Allen Hawke, Kurt George, Bruce DeLap, Verlynn Casler and Lyle Tunink. Interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home are in charge of the arrangements.


 HERMAN

A Funeral Mass and the Celebration of Life of Derek A. Herman, 18, of 606 North First Street, Greene were held Friday May 24, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Derek Alan Herman was born April 11, 1984, in Mason City, a son of Ronald Earl and Kathy Marie (Shultz) Herman, and died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He was currently a Junior at the Greene Community High School. He was president of the Sophomore Class and participated in Track, Basketball, and Football. He was creative in shop,having made an oak framed mirror for his mother. Derek enjoyed going deer hunting, fishing, riding his jet ski, and being a Harley enthusiast. He loved being with his family and caring for the family pets. Having a great sense of humor, he was very socially oriented and got along with others. A typical teenager, he loved to cruise, bark the tires, and eat macaroni and cheese. He was even known to barbecue brats for his friends in the parking lot in downtown Greene. Derek enjoyed playing Everquest, a game on the internet. He made many new friends through the internet. Those thankful for having shared the life of such a special person, include his loving parents: Ron and Kathy Herman: his two brothers: Chad and Andres; maternal grandparents: Galen “Bud” and LaVonne Shultz; paternal grandparents: Earl and Shirley Herman, all of Greene. Heaford held Sat., May 25 Funeral services for Walter H. Heaford, 80, of 108 South Main, formerly of Rockwell, were held Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene. Burial was in the Rockwell Cemetery


HEAFORD

Walter Henry Heaford was born January 14, 1922, in Rockwell, a son of Charles Walter and Amanda Sophia Carolyn (Mueller) Heaford, and was baptized at St. Peter¹s Lutheran Church in Rockwell. He died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene where he had been a resident for the past 26 years. His smile and cheerful disposition brought much joy to the staff and residents of the Liebe Care Center. He was always willing to help during the activity events at the center. He received much joy out of the many simple pleasures that many often take for granted. Living family members include two sisters-in-law: Marion Heaford of Ventura, and Johanna Heaford of Rockwell; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Charles, Oscar, and William; two sisters: Mildred Riggan, and Edith Boedeker. Funeral Mass for Ronald J. Osier held Tues., May 28 A Funeral Mass for Ronald J. Osier, 68, of 216 South First Street, Greene, was held Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial wase in the St. Mary’s Cemetery with military rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Ronald Joseph Osier was born April 8, 1934, near Oakwood, Floyd County, a son of Donald Joseph “Dutch” and Geraldine Marie (Betts) Osier and died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at his home in Greene. He received his education in the rural Floyd County schools and St. Mary’s School at Roseville. He graduated from Greene High School in 1952. He was employed for Northwestern Bell in Charles City until he entered the United States Army where he served during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Rosemary Barth on June 6, 1956, in Charles City. To this union were born two sons. The marriage ended in 1976. He was also married to Lita Grimes for a short time. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Bell Telephone where remained until his retirement in 1984. During the last five years of his employment he worked as an alcohol rehabilitation counselor and following retirement he worked in the same capacity for Warren and Marion Counties. Ron’s interests included hunting pheasants and fishing for Walleyes. Family and his grandchildren were the most important things in his life. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, honorary member of the V.F.W. and a member of Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Living family members include his two sons: Michael Joseph Osier of Mason City and Christopher Jon Osier of Charitan; four grandchildren: Shannon Osier, Stephanie Osier, Michael Dejean, and Jordan Osier; his mother: Gerry of Greene; five sisters and their spouses: Donna and Gary Gerhard of Marble Rock, Marjorie and Gerry Geitzenhauer of Westminster, CO, Sharon and Randy Krominga of Mason City, Barb and Steve Schroeder, and Deb and Tom Heidenwirth, all of Greene; four brothers and their spouses, Jim and Dianne Osier of Greene, David and Linda Osier of San Diego, CA, John and Judy Osier of Greene, and Dan and Jan Osier of Charles City. He was preceded in death by his father in 1986, sister Phyllis Groshens in 2000, and two brothers: Lyle Osier in 1984 and Eugene Osier in 1995.  FOLKERTS

Folkert Dirk Folkerts, 81, of Allison, Iowa passed away May 23, 2002 at the Allison Care Center in Allison. Folkert was born on December 28, 1920 in Allison, Iowa, to Martin and Anna (Rottink) Folkerts. Folkert was raised in the Allison area where he attended a rural country school. He served in the Army during WWII from December 1942 to January 1945. On November 17, 1948, he was united in marriage to Margaret Kampman at the Bethel Reformed Church in rural Aplington. Folkert enjoyed working on his farm and was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison where he served as an Elder and a Deacon. Folkert is survived by his wife, Margaret of Allison, Iowa, two sons: Steven Folkerts of Forest City, Iowa, and Darrel and wife, Noreen Folkerts of Allison; one daughter, Diane and husband Paul Terpstra of Janesville, Wisconsin; a sister, Marie and husband George Busch of Allison; a brother Richard and wife, Jean Folkerts of Allison; two close family members Alice Foster of Masonville, Iowa and John and wife VerJean Johnson of Parkersburg; and eight grandchildren. Folkert was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Anna Kampman, Engelena Foster, and one infant grandson, Daniel Folkerts. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002 at the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison with Rev. Steve Petroelje officiating. Special music was provided by key boardist, Denise Abbas accomp-anying special music by Neal, Darren and Melanie Terpstra. The flower committee was Barb DeBoer and Vivian Wildeboer and the ushers were Herman Kuiper and Roger Marks. Pallbearers were Maurice Busch, Wayne Busch, Wendell Busch, Joseph Sheridan, Duane Folkerts and Dennis Lindeman. Honorary pallbearers were Jodi Folkerts, Darci Folkerts, Jeremy Folkerts, Dana Folkerts, Neal Terpstra, Darren Terpstra, Melanie Terpstra and Lance Terpstra. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison in charge of arrangements.
