Maurice J. Harrington

Maurice J. Harrington, 88, of Waverly, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital Emergency Room of natural causes. Maurice was born on March 24, 1914, in Plainfield, Iowa, the son of Michael M. and Elizabeth (Egelseder) Harrington. He attended school in Plainfield until the ninth grade. Maurice then began his farming career. On October 30, 1936, Maurice was united in marriage to Lela I. Ellwood at the Catholic Church Parsonage in Parkersburg, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple continued farming in the Plainfield and Shell Rock areas until retiring in 1979. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, trips to Tama and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Lela of Waverly; four grandchildren: Debora Lynn Harrington of Montgomery, Alabama, David Bryan Harrington of Independence, Missouri, Darrell James Harrington of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dean Ronald Harrington and his wife Gwen of Norman, Oklahoma; nine great-grandchildren: Alexander, Alicia, Ashley, Skylar, Malaina, Chase, Connor, Kyle, and Krystal Harrington; one daughter-in-law: Violet Harrington of Edmond, Oklahoma; one sister: Margaret Williams of Waverly, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Ronald L. Harrington on August 4, 1989; seven brothers and sisters: Edward Harrington, Mary Babcock, Bernard Harrington, Ruth Hennings, Leo Harrington, Elizabeth Peterson, and Genevieve Vogel. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 31, 2002 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly with Rev. Michael Tauke officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Ruth Schluter accompany-ing the St. Mary’s Parish Choir. Pallbearers were Jerry Ackerman, Greg Flege, Bill Hennings, Bill Flege, Bryan Hansen, Tim Schmidt and Mike Pinta. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Waverly with Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly in charge of arrangements.


Carol L. Mathison

Carol L. Mathison, 80, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, formerly of Waverly, IA died August 30, 2002 at Mountain Towers Nursing Facility, Cheyenne, Wyoming of natural causes. She was born June 4, 1922, near Shell Rock, daughter of Fred and Blanche Stufflebeam. She married Jack L. Fritze in 1940. He preceded her in death. She married Sverre (Matt) Mathison in 1977. She then left her job with the Red Fox Inn, Waverly, and traveled with her husband for many years with his job as an insurance company examiner. Upon retirement, they settled in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. Survivors include her husband, Sverre (Matt) of Cheyenne, Wyoming; two daughters: Judy (Jim) Vowell of Waterloo and Patty Cross of Hollywood, Florida; two sons: Jack Jr. Fritze of Nashville, Tennessee and Billy (Lisa) Fritze of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming; fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; a sister: Darlene Kresse of Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Fritze; a sister, Eva McCloud and her parents. At her request, no services were held and the body was cremated. Memorials may be directed to the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa, where both of Carol’s marriages began or to Judy Vowell, 5514 Rochelle Dr. #43, Waterloo, IA 50701.


Joyce E. Kramer

Joyce E. Kramer, 82, of Dougherty, Iowa passed away August 27, 2002, at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield, Iowa. She was born November 16, 1919 in rural Ackley, Iowa to Sweer and Nellie (Abbas) Hovenga. Joyce attended schools in rural Butler County. She was married to Dalen Kramer on March 11, 1942 in Waverly, Iowa. Joyce worked as a farm wife. She enjoyed needle work, sewing, quilting, and gardening. Joyce is survived by a son, Dean and wife Nancy Kramer of Mason City; a son, Dale and wife Kathy Kramer of Dougherty; five sisters: Evelyn Kramer of Allison, Marlys Reams of Waterloo, Jean Seavey of Waterloo, Ruth Hinders of Clarksville, and Lillian Hinders of Evansdale; three brothers: Dale Hovenga of Shell Rock, Robert Hovenga of Clarksville, and Harm Hovenga of Huron, Illinois; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Henry Marlyn Duhn

Henry Marlyn Duhn, age 77, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Cornelius and Hattie (Baker) Duhn on January 7, 1925, in Marshalltown, Iowa. He received his education from the Aplington School. On July 19, 1946, Henry was united in marriage with Dorothy DeVries at her home in Austinville, Iowa. They made their home near Austinville where he was a hired hand for Albert Penning. In 1954, Henry and Dorothy rented a farm north of Austinville until 1964. They then bought a farm northeast of Aplington. In 1990 they retired and built their present home in Aplington. Henry was a member of the West Friesland Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley, Iowa, where he served as an Elder for many years. He served on the Butler County Board of Health. Henry enjoyed his church, gospel music, fishing, farming and traveling. He especially loved his family and spent much time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At 11:24 p.m., Saturday, August 24, 2002, Henry died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Staci Miller; his parents; his stepmother, Martha Duhn; three brothers, Harry Duhn, Robert Duhn and an infant brother. Henry is survived by his wife, Dorothy Duhn, of Aplington; four daughters, Patricia Roelfs and her husband, Douglas of Aplington, Janice Miller and her husband, David of Aplington, Vicki Fiacco and her husband, Ronald of Waterloo, Iowa and Sandra Ubben and her husband, Steven of Aplington; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Murray and her husband, Don of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Angeline Duhn of Wellsburg, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at West Friesland Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley, Iowa with Rev. Randy Crane officiating. Organist was Stella Neymeyer and pianist was Rhonda Hofmeister. Vocalists Jim and Pat Daggs sang “My Tribute” and Scott Clifford and Jim Daggs sang “Amazing Grace.” Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross"


Paul H. Rosenwinkle

Paul H. Rosenwinkle, age 95, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Fredrick, Sr. and Karolina Krumdieck Rosenwinkle on October 4, 1906, on a farm north of Clarksville, Iowa. He completed the eighth grade at Fremont # 9 School and was baptized and confirmed at Pleasant Valley United Church of Christ, rural Clarksville. He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Paul married Emma Lou on April 4, 1934, at St. John Lutheran Church, Vilmer, Iowa. The couple lived on the family homestead until 1940 when they purchased a farm of their own north west of Clarksville. Paul farmed until 1972, the year Emma died. In 1994, he moved into the retirement village in Clarksville. Paul, a lifetime member of Farm Bureau, served on their board of directors and he was a member of the Clarksville Odd Fellows Lodge. He was a farmer all his life and enjoyed mechanical repair and welding. After he retired, he enjoyed traveling to Texas for the winter and attending the rodeo at White River, South Dakota each summer until his health failed. At 2:10 p.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2002, Paul died at Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma on May 20, 1972; two brothers, Bill Rosenwinkle and Fred Rosenwinkle; and three sisters, Helen Griffith, Lillian Marksberry and Margret Nagen. Paul is survived by two daughters, Mavis and her husband, Thomas Montgomery, State College, Pennsylvania and Phyllis Rosenwinkel, Coralville, Iowa; three grandchildren, Sarai Renken, Denver Colorado, Jill Montgomery, Orlando, Florida and Polly Montgomery-Garner and her husband, Andrew of Oklahoma, Oklahoma; special friends, Larry and Judy Pruisner and children, Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral Services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 2002, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. David Walters, the Organist was Sharon Leerhoff, the Vocalist was Kelli Rosenwinkle and the Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “Some Glad Morning” and “God’s Eye Is On The Sparrow” with Special Music “Morning Has Broken” by Cat Stevens. The Honorary Casketbearers were Larry Pruisner and Dwight “Dewey” Pruisner and the Casketbearers were Allan Kluiter, Larry Voigts, Neil Wygle, Robert Wamsley, Robert Litterer and Brad Pruisner. The Flower Committee was Judy Pruisner and Carolyn Fenneman. Interment was at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Richard James Harken

Richard James Harken, age 82, of Parkersburg, Iowa was born the son of Corneal and Edna (Oelmann) Harken on December 11, 1919, in Butler County, south of Austinville, Iowa. He received his education in Austinville and Aplington Schools. On February 4, 1942, Richard was united in marriage with Marian Kromminga at the Austinville Christian Reformed Church Parsonage. They made their home and farmed west of Austinville until 1960, when they moved to Parkersburg. Richard owned and operated Harken Farm Equipment until1965 when he returned to farming and retired in 1973. Richard was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg. He was an active member serving on the School Board, Farm Bureau Board, a 4-H Leader and a charter member of the Parkersburg Lions Club. He enjoyed woodworking, working with stained glass, reading various papers and the Bible. At 1:25 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2002, Richard died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents. Richard is survived by his wife, Marian Harken of Parkersburg; two sons, Jim Harken and his wife, Vicki Jo of Parkersburg and Dick Harken and his wife, Verlene of Ackley, Iowa; one daughter, Sharlene Denholm and her husband, Erico of Cedar Falls, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Sharon and her husband, Eric Tullio; Jack and his wife, Anne Denholm; Jim and his wife, Amy, Denholm; Missy and her husband, Dale Edmonds; Mike and his wife Susan Harken; Abby Harken and Alex Harken; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Delbert Harken of Ackley, Iowa. Funeral Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2002, at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. Rev. Frank Pott officiated, Sharon Seehusen was the organist, and the Soloist was Charlene Kramer singing “Victory In Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art” and the Congregational Hymns were “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “Jehovah Is My Light.” The Honorary Casketbearers were her Grandchildren Abby Harken and Alex Harken and the Casketbearers were also her Grandchildren Sharon Tullio, Jack Denholm, Jim Denholm, Missy Edmonds, Mike Harken and also a nephew Delton Harken. Interment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, Iowa were in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be sent to his family.


Wilbur Elliot Groen

Wilbur Elliot Groen, age 88, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Pete and Dena (Eckhoff) Groen on May 4, 1914, in Grundy County, near Aplington. He received his education in various rural country schools. On January 5, 1939, Bill was united in marriage with Leona Poppe at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. They made their home on North Main Street in Clarksville where Bill drove a Milk Truck. They later moved and farmed near Plainfield. They attended the First United Church of Christ - Pleasant Valley, where he served on the Church Council and served on the rural Freemont Township School Board. They moved south of Clarksville in 1948 and into their present home in 1950. Bill drove a gravel truck until he retired at the age of 63, but continued working part time. Bill was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ. He delivered many meals for the elderly with Meals on Wheels program. Bill enjoyed walking up town, visiting and playing cards in the evening with his friends. At 7:34 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2002, Bill died at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Bernard Groen; and one sister, Ruth Ellerman. Bill is survived by his wife, Leona Groen of Clarksville; two sons, Jim Groen of Clarksville and Wilson (Mary) Groen of Franktown, Colorado; one daughter, Barb (Richard) Eckhoff of Allison; five grandchildren, Marcus (Rebecca) Groen, Shelly Groen, Becci (Brian) Treitz, and RaeAnn Eckhoff and Tressa Eckhoff; Step-Mother, Pauline Groen of Waterloo; four brothers, Arthur Groen of Nashua, Irvin (Doris) Groen of Shell Rock, Raymond (Annette) Groen of Waverly, and Marvin (Darlene)Groen of Waterloo; and five sisters, Ione Gosch of Clarksville, Dorothy Brocka of Bristow, Ethel (Bernard) Buskohl of Holland, Marlys (Verlyn) Schrage of Allison, and Beulah (Gerry) Vetter of Nashua. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2002 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. David Walters officiating. Organist Harriet Forry accompanied congregational hymns “Amazing Grace,” “In The Garden,” and “I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry.” Casketbearers were Larry Groen, Mark Ringleb, Kenny Buskohl, Randy Groen, Perry Groen, Paul Vetter and Darrel Groen. Interment was in Lowell Cemetery, rural Clarksvifamily of Bill Groen.

Beverly Jean Crawford

Beverly Jean Crawford, 59, of Ackley, Iowa passed away August 22, 2002 at the Covenant Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. She was born on October 29, 1942 in Butler County, Iowa to Kenneth and Lucille (Hopkes) Miller. Beverly received her education from the Dumont Community School. She was united in marriage on April 7, 1961 to Virgil Crawford at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont, Iowa. They made their home near Allison, Iowa until moving to the family farm near Kesley, Iowa. Bev was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church. She enjoyed her horses and most of all her grandchildren and spending time with her family. Bev is survived by her husband, Virgil Crawford of Ackley; daughter Deb and husband, Troy Dralle of Allison; and son Terry and wife, Jamie Crawford of Allison; three grandchildren, Crystal and Camie Crawford and Rachel Dralle. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Lucille Miller and two sisters, Janice and Lorraine Miller. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2002 at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accompanying soloist, Cheryl Scholten. Pallbearers were Dennis Miller, Jim Siebrands, Steve Winkowitsch, Russell Ubben, Dennis Winkowitsch and Danny Winkowitsch. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont was in charge of arrangements


Adam Donald Borglum

Adam Donald Borglum, age 12, of Bristow, Iowa, and formerly of Clarksville, was born the son of Donald Voyle and DeAnn Marie Kraft Borglum on March 9, 1990 in Waverly, Iowa. He had completed the 6th grade at Clarksville Elementary School. Adam was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville. He enjoyed his horses and his sisters. He died at 1:52 a.m., Saturday, August 17, 2002, at Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betsy Borglum in 1983; paternal great-grandmother, Louise Borglum; and maternal great-grandparents, Rudy Engel and John and Bertha Kraft. Adam is survived by his parents, Don and DeAnn Borglum, Bristow, Iowa; three sisters, Kaylee Borglum, Cassie Borglum and Carly Borglum, all of Bristow, Iowa; maternal grandparents, Richard and Vera Kraft, Clarksville, Iowa; and maternal great-grandmother, Vera Engel-Fuls. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at the Community United Methodist Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Allen Poore-Christians officiating. Organist was Paula Miller. Congregational Hymns were “Jesus Loves Me,” “Amazing Grace,” and “This Little Light Of Mine.” Special Music was “Hands” By Jewell. Casketbearers were Josh Meyer, Michael Schilling, Amanda Dralle, Matthew Schilling, Andrew Schilling, Bryce Bentley and Tyler Rinnels. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Leola Graham

Leola Graham, age 77, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter, of Leslie and Mina (Kettwig) Dring on January 20, 1925, in Butler County, Parkersburg, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1943. On May 31, 1947, Leola Dring was united in marriage with Elmer Graham at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived their entire married life in Parkersburg. She worked at Chamberlin Mfg. in Waterloo for two years after they were married. Leola sold Avon for several years in the local area. Leola was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking, reading, and solving crossword puzzles. Leola liked to go camping, fishing and golfing with Elmer. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and was quite a seamstress. She loved spending time with her family, especially with her granddaughters. At 1:06 a.m., Monday, August 19, 2002, Leola died at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa of heart failure. She was preceded in death by one son, Keith Graham; one grandson, Richard Graham; her parents; and one sister, Dixie Miller. Leola is survived by her husband, Elmer Graham of Parkersburg; one son, Clark Graham of Parkersburg; and one daughter, Jo Rider and her husband, Tim, of Iowa Falls, Iowa; two grandchildren, Melissa Aalfs, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Miekka Aalfs, Parkersburg, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Doug Miller, San Antonio, Texas and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 22, 2002, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Organist was Linda Truax. Congregational Hymns were “Blest Be The Tie That Binds,” and “How Great Thou Art.” Soloist Ken Kugel sang “Rock of Ages.” Casketbearers were Gaylen Harberts, Chuck Etjen, Larry Young, Arlyn Harberts, Craig Etjen and Donald Truax. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Hilda Sells

Hilda Sells, age 77, of Hampton and formerly of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Jake and Emma Hinders DeGroote on December 7, 1924, in New Hartford, Iowa. She received her education in a school near her home. In 1965, she graduated from Pitzie’s Beauty School in Waterloo. She owned and operated Hilda’s Kut and Kurl Beauty Shop in Clarksville for 35 years until her health failed in 1999. Hilda married William Sells on April 10, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minnesota. During their marriage, they lived in Waterloo, New Hartford and primarily Clarksville where they had lived for most of their married life. They had moved to Hampton in November, 2001. Hilda had been a member of the Clarksville Commercial Club for 38 years. She enjoyed collecting spoons, shopping for shoes; her clients at the beauty shop and most of all her kids and grandkids. She died at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Emma DeGroote; two brothers, Hank DeGroote and Clarence DeGroote and a son-in-law, Danny Muller. Hilda is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bill Sells, of Hampton, Iowa; one son, Bill (Deb) Sells, Jr., Iowa Falls, Iowa; three daughters, Donna (Fred) Kelm, Clarksville, Iowa; Mary (Merlin) Hibner, Garner, Iowa and Linda (Dan) Brammer, Hampton, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jake (Donna) DeGroote, Bristow, Iowa and Wally (Dottie) DeGroote, Golden Valley, Arizona; six sisters, Ann Bartel, Herman, Minnesota; Dorothy Jans, Clarksville, Iowa; Annette Sessler, Dumont, Iowa; Darlene (Frank) Vance, Clarksville, Iowa; Ruth Busching, Clarksville, Iowa and Alice (Jim) Jacobs, Allison, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday,k August 23 at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville with Rev. David R. Nelson officiating. Burial was in Lynnwood Cemetery, Clarksville.


 Delbert Maifeld

Delbert Maifeld, age 85, of Frostproof, Florida, was born the son of William and Alda Brown Maifeld on July 5, 1917, east of Hitesville, near Kesley, Iowa. He graduated from Clarksville High School in 1935. Mr. Maifeld and Dora Behrens were married August 3, 1942. To this union was born one son, Gerald. They were later divorced. He married Ethyl Elfberg in June, 1964. She died March 10, 1988. Delbert worked at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo, Iowa. Leaving there in 1964, they moved to Olmsted, Illinois where he operated a realty, auctioning and antique business. He later retired to Frostproof, Florida. Delbert belonged to the Assembly at Hitesville for many years. When he moved to Olmsted, Illinois, he and his wife, Ethyl were members of the Cape Bible Chapel at Cape Girardeau. After retiring to beautiful, sunny Florida, he became a member of the Good Shepherd Assembly and thoroughly enjoyed their friendship so very much. He enjoyed his trips to Canada fishing and the wonderful trips fishing in Florida with his son, Gerald. The hunting trips to Colorado with his brothers and relatives were all happy times in his life and he enjoyed talking about them. Delbert died Sunday, August 18, 2002, at Dove Health Care, Lake Wales, Florida of complications of Parkinsons Disease. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethyl; a grandson, Randy; a step-daughter, Judy Elfberg Kortemeyer of Davenport, Iowa; and a step-great-granddaughter, Yvonne Johnson of Waterloo, Iowa. He is survived by a son, Gerald Maifeld of Hudson, Iowa; a step-daughter, Beebs Elfberg Downing of Waterloo, Iowa; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Darrel (Betty) Maifeld of Canon City, Colorado and Kenneth (Arlene) Maifeld of Naples, Florida; and two sisters, Margery (Raymond) Roberts of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Lorraine (Arthur) Gadbois of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Funeral Services were held Friday, August 23 at Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington with burial in the Hitesville Cemetery Dena Miller


Dena Miller

Dena Miller, 92, of Allison, Iowa passed away August 24, 2002 at the Dumont Care Center. She was born November 2, 1909 in Butler County, Iowa to Harm and Henrietta (August) Penning. Dena attended country schools in Butler County. On January 30, 1929, she married Rube Miller in Dumont, Iowa. Dena was a farm wife, and a member of the Dumont Reformed Church. She enjoyed working on the farm, raising geese and chickens. Dena also enjoyed crocheting, quilting, reading, and going to and listening to her son Richrd’s country band. Dena is survived by her granddaughter, Marilee and hus-band, Harley Knapp of Dumont; and great grandson, Kurt Knapp of Dumont. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Rube, son Richard, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accomp-anying soloist, Cheryl Scholten. Pallbearers were Kurt Knapp, Jim Franke, Russell Penning, Darwin Penning, Russell Newhall and Lloyd VanEllen. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont in charge of arrangements.

Harm Jerry Kettwig, age 90, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Claud and Irene Cousins Kettwig on February 16, 1912, Parkersburg, Iowa. He received his education in a rural country school near his home. In 1941, Harm was united in marriage with Grace Mulder at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. They made their home in Parkersburg and then moved to a farm near Clarksville in the mid 1940’s. They moved into Clarksville in the early 1970’s. Harm enjoyed farming all of his life. Harm was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. He enjoyed woodworking and travelling. At 12:10 a.m., Thursday, August 15, 2002, Harm died in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Grace; one sister; and one brother. Harm is survived by one son, Kenneth Kettwig of Clarksville; one daughter, Betty Shelton and her husband, Gary, of Las Vegas, Nevada; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Graveside Services were at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 22, 2002, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa. Rev. Paul Schaedig was officiating the service.

Reiner A. Fecht, 94, of Allison, Iowa, passed away September 5, 2002 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly. Reiner was born December 15, 1907 in Cogswell, North Dakota to Bruno and Katie (Rieken) Fecht. He attended rural Butler County Schools. Reiner was married on February 15, 1940 in Butler county, Iowa to Tillie Eilderts. He worked as a farmer and at the University of Northern Iowa as a custodian. Reiner was a member of the Reformed Church of Stout and was the caretaker of the cemetery at one time. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing cards. Reiner is survived by two daughters: Harriet and husband Kermit Pothast of Fredricksburg, Iowa and Mary Fecht of Waverly; two sons: Gary and wife Karen Fecht of Shell Rock and Merle Fecht of Waco, Texas; a sister Ann Kramer of Shell Rock; two grandsons: Scott Pothast and Brian Fecht. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Lois, four brothers, and one sister. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 9, 2002 at the Reformed Church of Stout with Rev. David H. Powers officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Elaine Schnell accomp-anying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Brian Fecht, Scott Pothast, Marvin Fecht, Darwin Fecht, Byron Mulder and Mervin Menken. Final resting place was in the Bethel Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa. Esther E. Klunder, 75, of Allison, Iowa, passed away on September 5, 2002 at the Vinton Lutheran Home in Vinton, Iowa. Esther was born on January 1, 1927, in Clarksville, to Edward J. and Jennie (Lursen) Heyenga. Esther attended school in Allison and Business College in Nebraska for one year. She married Robert F. Klunder on May 4, 1947, at St. John’s E.V. Lutheran Church, Vilmar. Esther worked at the Allison Newspaper, Deputy Auditor, and Greene City Clerk. She was the President of the Allison Women’s Club, a member of AmVets Auxiliary, and a member of several church committees for St. John’s E.V. Lutheran Church in Vilmar. Esther loved gardening, cooking, and reading. Esther is survived by a son: Steven and wife Jean and grandson Casey Klunder of Allison; a daughter Denise and husband Jim and granddaughter Elizabeth Nottger of Vinton, Iowa; brother Karl and wife Joyce Heyenga of Allison; four sisters: Frieda and husband Vern Christensen of Allison, Lydia Henning of Allison, Joselene Smith of Janesville, and Harriet and husband Robert Freesemann of Allison. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers John and Edwin Heyenga, two sisters Caroline Wix and Grace Heyenga. Verne Eugene Daman

Verne Eugene Daman, 88, of Clarksville, Iowa, formerly of Cresco, Shell Rock and Waterloo, died early Wednesday morning, September 4, 2002 at Community Nursing Home, Clarksville of Parkinson’s Disease. Verne was born on January 1, 1914, on a farm in Orleans Township, Winneshiek County, near Cresco, the son of George Newton and Ollie Elizabeth (Salsbury) Daman. He was baptized, confirmed and was a member of Cresco United Methodist. He attended school in Cresco. Verne was united in marriage to Alta Viola Barnes on June 7, 1933 in New Hampton, Iowa. During their marriage the couple lived in Cresco sixteen years, Waterloo for thirty-five years and Shell Rock for three years. While in Cresco Verne worked for the Cresco Nursery, Howard County Road Work, Bergfalk Furniture, Del Larson Furniture, and Sears. In Waterloo he worked for Diamond Brothers Grocery, John Deere, and he worked for Rath Packing for 26 years, retiring in 1975. When Alta moved into the nursing home in 1987, Verne moved into an apartment in Clarksville, where he lived until he moved to Community Nursing Home in 2000. Verne enjoyed hunting in his youth, fishing, collecting rocks, gardening, working, talking and joking with people. He is survived by his two daughters, Phyllis Heeren and her husband, Harold of Shell Rock; Shirley Daman of Clarksville; one son, Neil Daman of Round Rock, Texas; five grandchildren, John Heeren and wife, Sue of Allison, Jane Swinton and husband, Bruce of Shell Rock, Jodi Charley and husband Chris of Janesville, Kate Daman of Round Rock, Texas, and Adam Daman of San Marcos, Texas; eight great grandchildren, Jason, Matthew, and Nicole Heeren, Erin and Cheyenne Swinton, Morgan and Dawson Charley and Donovan Weidler; one sister, Bonnie Jean Woods and husband Don of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother Leonard Daman and wife, Mila of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Alta on March 18, 1998, and his brother, Norbert. Funeral services were held Monday, September 9, 2002, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Waterloo with Pastor Patti Eastman officiating. Organist was Jean Graham, and soloist was Bruce Swinton. Casketbearers were Chris Charley, Harold Heeren, John Heeren, Neil Daman, Jason Heeren, and Bruce Swinton. Burial was in State Line Cemetery, Harmony, Minnesota. Memorials may be directed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Cedar Valley Hospice, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, or to the State Line Cemetery. Bruno DeBeer

 Bruno DeBeer, age 72, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Otto and Etta Peters DeBeer on May 4, 1930 in Butler County, Iowa near Parkersburg. He received his education in the Parkersburg community. Bruno married Dorothy Uhlenhopp December 22, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Parkersburg for five years while Bruno worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo. They then moved to their farm northeast of Parkersburg, near Butler Center. They farmed, milked cows and raised hogs, for 35 years until retirement in 1995, at which time they moved to their present home in Parkersburg. He was a member of Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg where he had served as a Deacon, an Elder, and was a member of the men’s fellowship. Bruno was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post #285 in Parkersburg. He enjoyed having coffee with friends at Marion’s and at Russ’s. He especially enjoyed fishing and very much enjoyed taking part in his grandchildren’s activities. Bruno died at 1:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Stacia Sikkema. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy DeBeer, Parkersburg, Iowa; three daughters, Diane Sikkema, Lockport, Illinois; Bev and her husband, Al Harms, Clarksville, Iowa, and Charlotte and her husband, Steve Koenen, of Aplington, Iowa; six grandchildren, Sarah Sikkema, Brett and Lindsey Harms, Nicholas, Mandi and Molly Koenen and one sister, LuEtta Spree, Parkersburg. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Hope Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Neal Ooms officiating. Organist was Kathy Meyer. Soloist Lois Fisher sang “How Great Thou Art.” Congregational Hymns were “In The Garden” and “Old Rugged Cross.” Honorary Casketbearers were Ben Frieling, Richard Mulder, Lawrence Schrage and Ben Reints. Casketbearers were Glen Arends, LeRoy Lupkes, John Spain, Henry Johnson, Marvin Eilderts and Russ Simon. Flower Committee was Darlene Arend and Vada Luhring. 09/24/02 Donald David Reints, age 76, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Frank E. and Mabel (Wilson) Reints on July 5, 1926, north of Parkersburg in Butler County, Iowa. He received his education in the Parkersburg schools and graduated with the class of 1944. He entered the US Army on December 11, 1950. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas in the Medical Detachment. Donald married Darlene Hamlin on September 25, 1951, in the Jefferson Center Church, Menlo, Iowa. Donald was discharged from the US Army on January 17, 1952. The couple lived with his parents on the farm for one year and in 1954, moved to their home on the farm. Donald farmed and raised livestock until December, 1999, when he moved to Parkersburg due to illness but continued to manage the farm. In December, 2000, he moved into the Maple Manor Village in Aplington. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Parkers-burg where he was a trustee and had helped to build the parsonage. He was a member of the American Legion Post #285 where he had received a 50-year membership award. He served on the Butler ASCS Board and served as the Albion Township Treasurer. Donald enjoyed visiting with friends, playing cards, fishing and playing pool. He especially enjoyed watching the grandchildrens’ activities. Donald died at Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, at 11:00 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2002, of complications of a stroke. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Vernon Reints and one sister, Marie Stoppelmoor. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Reints of Greenfield, Iowa; two sons, Gregory Reints and his wife, Kris of Waterloo and Vance Reints and his wife, Mary of Aplington; two daughters, Renee and her husband, Jerry Asp of Hammond, Wisconsin and Dianne and her husband, David Jungmann of Greenfield, Iowa; twelve grandchildren who were the casketbearers, eight grandsons: Jeremy Reints, Jared Reints, Joel Reints, Nathan Reints PFC Jerad Asp, Matz Jungmann, Matthew Reints and Mason Reints and four granddaughters: Meghan Jung-mann, Alisa Asp Moore, Michelle Reints and Nicole Asp, three great-grandchildren; one brother, Ben Reints and his wife, Evelyn of Parkersburg; two sisters, Margaret and her husband, Virgil Christensen of New Hartford and Doris and her husband, Wilbur Petersen of Grundy Center; a brother-in-law, Rient Stoppelmoor of Parkersburg and a sister-in-law, Frances Reints of Parkersburg. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg with Rev. Ron Bartlett officiating.
