Allen C. Winkey

Allen C. Winkey, 85, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Thursday morning, November 21, 2002, at Allison Health Care Center of heart failure. Allen was born on February 23, 1917, on the family homestead outside of Shell Rock, the son of Charles and Ina Mae (Allen) Winkey. He attended school through the eighth grade in rural Shell Rock. One June 2, 1937, Allen was married to Elsie Bencke in Woodstock, Illinois. Elsie died in 1951. Allen was later married to Delores Hill in September 1951, in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple made their home in Shell Rock where they raised their family. Allen worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 24 years and for Viking Pump in Cedar Falls for 11 years, retiring in 1979. Al was an outdoor enthusiast who loved his huge vegetable garden and traveling to Missouri to hunt, fish and pick up fresh pecans. He particularly enjoyed his friends and acquaintances with the New Hartford Lions Club, serving at the pancake breakfasts and working at the bingo games. Al put many miles on his little red pickup going to auctions, having coffee with his buddies or supervising a variety of projects. Al will be remembered for his quick smile and for having a pocketful of fireballs to give his special friends. Al is survived by his five daughters, Judy Miller of Shell Rock, Sharon White of Phoenix, Arizona, Deb Bennett and her husband Duane of Waverly, Di Miller and her husband Randy of Clarskville, Denise Rethamel and her husband Bill of Muscatine; two sons, Steve Winkey and his wife Diane of Aplington, David Winkey and his wife Dianne of Lockhart, Texas; one brother, Harry Winkey of Shell Rock; one sister, Ethel Morrill of Waverly; twenty grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Elsie in 1951; his second wife Delores in June 2002; three brothers, Justin Winkey, Darrell Winkey, Howard Cain Culver; five sisters, Velma Mathes, Grace Welch, Illa Mae Keller, Olive Martin and Ruth Graff. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 23, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Heritage United Methodist Church with Pastor Nathan N. Frazee officiating. Cremation was held on Friday, November 22, 2002. Memorials may be directed to the New Hartford Lions Club. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly was in charge of arrangements.


James Lowell Maifield

James Lowell Maifield, age 53, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Lowell and Wilma (Meinders) Maifield on May 23, 1949, in Hampton, Iowa. He graduated in 1967 from Dumont High School. After playing basketball for one year at Wisconsin-Stout, he continued his education at Iowa State University and received his Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering in 1971. He earned his Professional Engineer (PE) license after six years of construction project management experience and successfully completing the PE exam. On June 20, 1970, James was united in marriage with Patty Stubbe at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Iowa. They made their home for a short time in Park View, Iowa, where Jim was a construction project engineer for General Growth Development. In 1972 their son Christopher was born. They then lived in Rockton, Illinois, for four years while Jim worked for Ty-Mar in Beloit, Wisconsin, as a construction project manager. In 1974 Jonathan was born in Beloit. They moved to Aplington in 1978 where Jim owned and operated Mai-Con, Inc. (Maifield Construction, Incorporated). Jim completed the construction of his present home in Aplington in 1980. From 1987 to 1995 he lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he worked as a project manager and chief estimator. During this time he returned to Aplington almost every weekend (and many Tuesday nights during basketball season) to be with his sons. He moved back home to Aplington in 1995 and began working for Gethmann Construction in Marshalltown, Iowa, as a chief estimator/project manager. Some of the construction projects he managed and took pride in during his career include: North Park Shopping Mall in Davenport, John Deere Parts Distribution Center in Milan, Illinois, John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, John Deere Dubuque Works additions, several elderly housing projects in Butler County, the Newton Aquatic Center, the Marshall County Jail, and the recent skywalk and clinic additions in Marshalltown. Jim was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. He took an active role in his son’s lives as Boy Scout Sponsor, Youth Leader, and basketball coach. He was always present for his son’s sporting events, proudly cheering them on, even if it meant 6 hours on the road to & from Minneapolis. Jim enjoyed golfing, pheasant hunting, fishing, and boating with sons, family, and friends. In his spare time he also liked reading, going to movies, going on family vacations, and caring for his dogs, J.C. and Buster. He was an avid Iowa State basketball and football fan and attended games with his sons whenever possible. Most importantly, he was a very loving father who always enjoyed spending time with his sons. On Monday, November 18, 2002, James died at his home in Aplington of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents. James is survived by two sons: Christopher and his wife Sarah of Dubuque, and Jonathan of Ankeny. He is also survived by one brother, Greg, his wife Nancy, and their children, Sarah and Kelly, of Waverly. Funeral Services were at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 22, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Iowa. Rev. Robert Schnucker officiated, the Organist was Leneé Pollock and the Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” The Casketbearers were Gary Reiners, Doug Card, Dwight Card, Tim Seibert, Todd Seibert and Keith Meinders. Interment was at Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to his family of mailed to Jim’s home in Aplington.


Walter H. Wunsch

Funeral services for Walter H. Wunsch, 76, of 216 South Main, Greene, were held Monday: November 25, 2002 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene officiating. Walter H. Wunsch was born January 17, 1926, in Dumont, Butler County a son of Alexander and Helena (Schonbier) Wunsch, and died Thursday, November 21, 2002, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He was baptized April 17, 1927 at the Reformed Church in Dumont, Confirmed a member of St Peter Lutheran Church on April 7, 1946. He received his education in the Bristow Public School graduating in 1943. As a young man he worked with his father until he was inducted in the United States Army on March 25, 1944. He served with the 363rd Medical Battalion in France and Germany where was wounded on March 6, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on February 12, 1946. On October 6, 1946, he was united in marriage to Ruth H. Folkerts at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Greene and to this union were born five children. Walt and his brother Paul continued the family business in Greene known as Wunsch Plumbing and Heating and Later Wunsch Construction Co. which was started by their father in 1944. Following his retirement in 1987, Walt and Ruth spent their winters in Texas. His number one priority was his family and his grandchildren; with golfing, and being on the computer. He gave of himself unselfishly to the betterment of the Greene community. He was a member of the Swimming Pool Board, Round Grove Golf Country Club Board, Commercial Club, Scoutmaster Troop 26 BSA, Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion, St. Peter Lutheran Church Choir, and the Community Chorus. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Ruth H. Wunsch of Greene; two daughters: Linda (Lloyd) Foster of Omak, WA, Carol (Keith) Kinnaird of Redmond, WA, Three sons: Steven Wunsch of Ida Grove, Kenneth (Jody) Wunsch of Marshalltown, Randall (Kelly) Wunsch of Garner; grandchildren: Benjamin, Christopher, and Stefanie Foster; Amanda, Allyson, and Adam, Wunsch; Jason, Tiffany, and Becca Wunsch; Megan, and Matthew Wunsch; Colin Kinnaird; and a sister-in-law: Nola Wunsch of Greene and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Magarete Beninga, and one brother, Paul Wunsch. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Walter H. Dorothy Pfluger Squires

Dorothy Pfluger Squires passed away on November 14, 2002. Dorothy was born in Bristow, Iowa on July 27, 1911 to Clare and Maude Waite. She attended Bristow High School and Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school before moving to Buckeye, AZ in 1939. Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper, and on July 23, 1940, she married Pete Pfluger. They made their home at Buckeye where they farmed. After his death in August, 1986, she married Everett Squires in Greene, Iowa, in January, 1988. He died in November, 1988. She continued to live at Buckeye until 1998 when she moved to Sun city, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Pete and Everett, and a step-daughter, Nancy Kyhl. She is survived by step-children: Mary Lou Ott, Mike Squires, and Joe Squires, all of Greene. Funeral services were held on November 18, 2002 at the Buckeye, AZ Community Church with interment in the Louis B. Hazelton Memorial Park, Buckeye, AZ.


LaVern Norton

LaVern Norton, 78, of 308 1st Street S.E., Waverly, Iowa, died on Monday, November 25, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness. LaVern was born on January 22, 1924, in Moorehead, Minnesota, the son of Earl and Ann (Bonenko) Norton. When LaVern was 5 years old, he moved with his family to Clarksville, Iowa. He attended school in Clarksville, graduating from the Clarksville High School in 1942. On 4 June, 1942, LaVern entered the U.S. Army, where he served during WWII, and was active in the D-Day Invasion. LaVern was honorably discharge on 12 June, 1946, and returned home to Clarksville. On October 2, 1947, LaVern was united in marriage to Mary McKliget in Belmont, Iowa, and to this union Tom, Pat, Dan and Mark where born. The couple made their home in Waverly, where the couple ran the Clarksville Roller Dome from 1947 - 1955. In 1950, LaVern also went to work for the Shield-Bantam Company (now Terex) in Waverly as a truck driver. In 1965, LaVern started the Norton Box Company north of town and continued to drive for Bantam until he retired in 1986. He then continued with the Box Company until it was sold in 1989. LaVern was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, and a member of both the American Legion Post #176 and V.F.W. Post #2208. He enjoyed to hunt, trap and fish, he collected baseball cards and beer cans, was an avid Cubs Fan, and really enjoyed his work driving for Bantam. But most of all, LaVern loved spending time with his family, and card playing with friends and family at Doc’s Tap in Clarksville. LaVern is survived by his wife, Mary of Waverly; his four sons and their wives, Tom & Diane Norton of Orlando, Florida, Pat & Diann Norton of Clarksville, Dan & Paulette Norton of Waverly, and Mark & Karen Norton of Waverly; 10 grandchildren, Ben & Chris Norton, Tony Norton, Tim Norton & his wife, Janie, Julie Hoodjer & her husband, Tom, Amie Norton, Wendy, Andrew, Matt & Mitch Norton; 2 great grandchildren, Mallory Hoodjer & Nate Norton; two brothers, Jim Norton & his wife, Leila of Clarksville, Gordon Norton of Decorah and a sister, Connie Anderson & her husband, Jerry of Wichita, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Eugene “Gene” Norton in 1999; three half sisters, Pat Sanford, Mayburne Rose Dolan, Marlys Norton, and a half brother, Everett Norton. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with Rev. Mike Tauke presiding. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #176 will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Waverly. Visition will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2002, from 3:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, where there will be a public scripture service at 8:00 P.M. Memorials may be directed to the family, and a memorial fund will be established at a later date.

Robert G. Jackson

Robert G. Jackson, 81, of Cedar Rapids , died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 , in St. Luke’s Hospital following a long illness. Robert was born December 16, 1920 in Clarksville , Iowa to Gay and Edna Ramsey Jackson. He married Marvel I. Frerichs on August 23, 1941 in Waterloo , Iowa . He was office manager for Martin Marietta for over 35 years retiring in 1982. He served in the US Army during World War II, and was an avid golfer and member of the Senior Golf Association. Survivors include his wife Marvel of 61 years, a daughter Patricia Ann Jackson of Anamosa, two grandchildren, Tim Sebetka of Long Beach , California , and Robyn Sebetka of Cedar Rapids , a cousin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Barbara, and a brother Joe. Robert was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Services with military honors by VFW Post No. 788 were held Friday, November 22, 2002 , in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Fran Griffeth officiated. Entombment was in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.


Mavis Jean Dralle

Mavis Jean Dralle, 60, of Allison, passed away November 25, 2002 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo . She was born November 29, 1941 in Butler County , Iowa to Henry and Alice (Groen) Hinders. Mavis attended Allison Schools , and was married to Roger Dralle. She worked at the Allison Health Care Center as a CNA rehab aid. Mavis was a member of the Allison Bible Church in Allison. She enjoyed her grandchildren, family and friends, and also enjoyed gardening. Mavis is survived by two daughters: Marcia and Randy Siefken of Bettendorf and Kim and Scott Schrage of Allison; two sons: Troy and Deb Dralle and Scot and Sarah Dralle, all of Allison; a sister, Darlas and Tom Colman of Varona, Illinois and a brother, Steve and Fumiko Hinders of Santa Barbara, California; four grandchildren: Justin Siefken, Erica Schrage, Jared Schrage and Rachel Dralle. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. , Friday, November 29, 2002 at the Allison Bible Church in Allison with Pastor John Currier officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Ann Kruse accompanying the congregational singing. The flower committee was Bonnie Dralle and Judy Heeren. Pallbearers were Butch Groen, Pat Sanders, Larry Dralle, LeRoy Dralle, Raymond Cooper and Richard Dralle. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison in charge of arrangements.

Rose M.Wintz

Rose M. Wintz, age 75, of Clarion, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 7, 2002, at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Clarion with Rev. Curt Miner officiating. Burial was in the Hitesville Cemetery, rural Aplington. Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, was in charge of arrangements.


Lee Alvin Deuell

Lee Alvin Deuell,46, of Waterloo,Iowa, died Sunday night,December 1,2002, at University Hospital in Iowa City. He was born on January 25,1956, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Donald and Carrie [Avery] Deuell. He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1974. He was employed at the Shell Rock News office upon graduation, and soon began working at the Security State Bank. Later that year he was diagnosed as having kidney disease, and began hemodialysis, which eventually forced him to quit his job. He volunteered at the Shell Rock Elementary School for 11 years. He later volunteered at the Irving Elementary School and the Cedar Valley Food Bank, both in Waterloo. He taught beginning computer classes at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Allison and the Cedar Valley Stamp Clubs, having held various offices in each. He was a member of the American Philatelic Society. He was also a member of Unity Presbyterian Church, having been its pianist and an Elder. He had been on dialysis over 28 years. He enjoyed helping others, especially with questions about kidney disease. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, one brother, Linn Deuell, one niece, and one nephew. His body was donated to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Memorials may be made to the Hemodialysis Unit at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. Services are tentatively scheduled for Saturday December 28, 2002 at Unity Presbyterian Church. Rev. Topp officiating with Rev. Rodney Peters assisting.


Anna Mae Abbas

Anna Mae was born the daughter of Glenn and Tillie Schoon Lewis on July 27, 1927, in Hollandale, MN. As a small child they moved to Ackley where she received her education. On April 28, 1947, Anna Mae Lewis was united in marriage with Fred Abbas in the home of Fred’s parents in rural Aplington. They made their home and farmed south of Austinville, Iowa. Through the years she also worked at the Café in Aplington, the Canning Factory in Ackley, was a Nurse’s Aid at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls and Allison Care Center, and was a senior companion volunteer. Shortly following Fred’s death from a car accident in 1969, Anna Mae moved to Aplington. Then in 1974, she moved to Kesley. Anna Mae was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ackley and enjoyed helping quilt at the Presbyterian Church in Aplington. She served as the Butler County Fair Supervisor for the clothing and textiles for five years. She enjoyed crocheting, fishing, playing cards, family gatherings with her children and grandchildren and going for coffee with her friends. On December 4, 2002, Anna Mae died at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Abbas on January 15, 1969, one daughter, Carol Ann Abbas on November 12, 1950, one son, Eugene Abbas on January 14, 1969, her parents, an infant brother, Everett Lewis, and an infant sister, Frances Lewis. Anna Mae is survived by three daughters, Barbara Croot and her husband, Karl of Iowa Falls, IA, Frances Krull and her husband, Eldon of Aplington, IA, and Beverly Truax and her husband Rodney Sr. of Parkersburg, IA; 10 grandchildren, Angela Smith, Valerie Boge, Michael Smith, Danielle Croot, Kristine Lind, Kay Bus, Rodney Truax Jr., Rusty Truax, Reggie Truax and Rebecca Truax; 20 great grandchildren, Kottie Smith, Kiylie Smith, James Allison, Heather Smith, Bryant Beightol, Derringer Smith, Levi Beightol, Allison Smith, Matthew Smith, Kymberli Lind, Samantha Lind, Kolten Bus, Mason Bus, Devon Truax, McKenna Truax, Jordyn Truax, Myranda Truax, Matthew Truax, Whitney Truax, and Aaliah Truax; two brothers, Bennie Lewis and his wife Norma Jean of Ames, IA, and John Lewis and his wife, Caroline of Bristow, IA; and two sisters, Inez Winters and her husband, Stanley of Iowa Falls, IA, and Irene DeVries and her husband, Daryl of Ackley, IA. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 7, 2002, at the United Methodist Church Ackley, IA with Rev. Patricia Connor officiating. Organist Leola Wright accompanied congregational hymns “Amazing Grace,” “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Casketbearers were Gary Lewis, Curtis Lewis, Jeffrey Lewis, Bradley Lewis, Jason Lewis and Todd Lewis. Interment was in Ackley Christian Reformed Cemetery, Ackley, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Charles Melvin Norris

Charles Melvin Norris, age 79, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Leonard and Nellie (Brauer) Norris on April 29, 1923, Lincoln Township, Tama County, Reinbeck, Iowa. He received his education from the Reinbeck School. Chuck served in the United States Navy during World War II. On October 27, 1944, Chuck was united in marriage with Verla Folkers in Waterloo, Iowa. They made their home in Morrison, Iowa, and farmed with his father for two years. They moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Chuck worked for Roy Harper as an auto mechanic. In 1948, they moved to Grundy Center, Iowa, where he worked at a Pontiac Garage until 1951, then they moved to Parkersburg. Chuck then owned and operated Chuck’s Standard Service Station and later he proudly owned and operated Chuck’s Mobil Gas Station and Chuck’s Skelly Gas Station in Parkersburg. Chuck then became a rural mail carrier in 1970 retiring in 1988. Chuck was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. He was a volunteer fireman in Cedar Falls, Grundy Center and Parkersburg. Chuck was a member of the American Legion in Parkersburg and the Aplington AMVETS. In his spare time he liked to do woodworking and making furniture, knickknacks and shelving. He enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. On Thursday, December 5, 2002, Chuck entered heaven at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents. Chuck is survived by his wife, Verla Norris of Parkersburg, his four children, Ranae Knock (Ken) of Parkersburg, Mike Norris (Patti) of Parkersburg, Rhonda Riniker (Tom) of Dubuque, and Risa Norris (Scott Girres) of Waterloo, Iowa, ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one sister, Nadine Dew (LeRoy) of Grundy Center. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 9, 2002, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa, with Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Organist was Mary Ann Simon. Vocalist Stan Thompson sang “Be Not Afraid” and “On Eagles Wings.” Congregational Hymns were “Here I Am Lord” and “Borning Cry.” Trumpeter was Kevin Truax. Casketbearers were Ed Lahey, Dave Campbell, Klint Knock, Mike Nisius, Cory Norris, Jared Girres, and Carlos Sierra-Salazar. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. With Full Military Rites were conducted by Navel Reserve Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Sara L Schroeder Davis

Funeral services for Sara L Schroeder Davis, 24, of 503 South Iowa, Charles City, and her unborn infant son John William Davis, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 16, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene with Reid¹s Funeral Chapel of Greene in charge of arrangements. Sara Lynn Schroeder was born December 2, 1978, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, a daughter of Bruce James and Linda Ann (Campbell) Schroeder, and died Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, along with her unborn infant son, John William Davis, from complications of spinal meningitis. She received her education from the Greene Community Schools, graduating in 1997. During High School Sara participated in the choir, played trumpet in the band and was on the softball team. She was a member of the Girl Scouts and Library Teen Board. As a teenager she enjoyed driving around town, baby sitting for the neighbors, and bugging her brother. Sara attended North Iowa Area Community College and Hamilton Business College, both in Mason City. On July 8, 2000, Sara was united in marriage to Jason Dell Davis at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. They made their home in Charles City, where she worked for Comprehensive Systems. Sara was a devoted and loving mother and wife. Her children were the sunshine of her life and the center of her attention. She enjoyed her work with the residents of the Burling House at Comprehensive Systems and found it very rewarding. Her interests included reading, playing the piano, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with her grandparents. Living family members include her husband Jason Davis of Charles City; her children, Keaton Schroeder, age 5, Alex Schroeder, age 3, and Catherine Davis, age 10-1/2 months; her mother Linda Schroeder of Marshalltown; her father Bruce Schroeder of Greene; her brother Todd Schroeder of Greene; her grandmothers: Loretta Campbell of Marshalltown and Mary Schroeder of Greene; aunts and uncles: Dan and Carol Schroeder of Greene, Bruce and Jan McIntosh, of Corvallis, Oregon; her father and mother-in-law: Steven and Catherine Heyland Beale of Des Moines; and her brothers-in-law Kevin (Shawna) Davis and Chris (Tara) Davis. Lorraine Thorne

Lorraine Thorne age 79, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born July 5, 1923, in Parkersburg, Iowa, the daughter of William and Bertha Krider Wiegmann. She graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1940. She married Robert B. Thorne on July 23, 1941 in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple lived all their married life in Parkersburg. Lorraine was a homemaker and a very good mother. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles during her spare time. She liked to go on trips to Branson to enjoy musical shows. She enjoyed listening to country music, especially Johnny Cash. Lorraine made sure everyone’s needs were taken care of first. She loved her children and grandchildren and looked especially forward, to having everyone together for Christmas Eve. She died December 12, 2002, at Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert B. Thorne; a son, Robert G. Thorne; three sisters, Barbara Calkins, Kate Calvert and Margaret Ibeling and two brothers, Bill Wiegmann and Ed Wiegmann. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Thorne, Parkersburg; Leon (Becky) Thorne, Parkersburg; one daughter, Delores (Marvin) Adolphs, Parkersburg; one daughter-in-law, Rose Thorne, Parkersburg; two sisters, Adel (Robert) Mennen and Thelma (Marvin) Flesner; eight grandchildren, Dustin Thorne, Hayley Foster, Brynn Thorne, Jeffrey Adolphs, Kimberly Butler, Steven Adolphs, Scott Thorne and Brett Thorne; and nine great-grandchildren, Alysia and Nicholas Adolphs, Cannon Butler, Victoria Thorne, Camden Foster, Rachel and Gwendolyn Thorne and Brein and Isabelle Thorne. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2002 at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Pastor Ron Bartlett officiating. Organist Mary Ann Simon accompanied Congregational Hymns, “Rock of Ages” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were her grandsons, Jeff Adolphs, Scott Thorne, Brett Thorne, Dustin Thorne, Brynn Thorne and Steve Adolphs. Honorary Casketbearers were her granddaughters, Kimberly Butler and Hayley Foster. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Brent G. Prange

Brent G. Prange, 60, of Des Moines, died of cancer Wednesday, December 11, at Mercy Hospice-Johnston. Cremation followed the visitation. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 13, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny, of which he was a member. Burial of the cremains were at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Prange was born in Waverly and had lived in Des Moines since 1980. He was a retired counselor with Saydel High School and a member of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, the Upper Iowa Hall of Fame and the Allison-Bristow Hall of Fame. He had served as president of the Saylorville Officials Association and enjoyed baseball and officiating. He is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Bill of Des Moines; a daughter, Kris Ann Ropa of Cedar Rapids; a stepson, Brian Dixon of Urbandale; two stepdaughters, Robin Stein-kamp and Christy Hemry, both of Des Moines; four grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to his church. Hamilton’s Near Highland Memory Gardens Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Vivian "Pauline" (Sinkey) Toll

Graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Allison Cemetery in Allison, Iowa with Rev. Dale Harlow officiating. The Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services were in charge of arrangements. Vivian “Pauline” (Sinkey) Toll went to be with the Lord on December 16, 2002. She was born May 17, 1905 in Shell Rock, Iowa and was the daughter of Henry and Addie Sinkey. Pauline graduated from Shell Rock High School and taught school in Butler County. She also taught cake decorating at the YMCA in Waterloo, Iowa and received many honors for her beautiful cakes. She was united in marriage to Vern Toll of Allison, Iowa, September 28, 1926. The last two years Pauline resided in the home of her daughter in Humboldt, Iowa. On July 9, 2002, she entered the Marian Nursing Home in Fort Dodge. She is survived by her daughter, Nedra Kelley and son-in-law, Lyle of Humboldt, Iowa; three granddaughters Lynnet Youngblood and husband Glenn of Humboldt, Iowa, Christine Blum and husband Duane of Mason City, Iowa and Denise Gray and husband Ken of Columbia, Missouri. She had five great-grandchildren: Nathan, Jonathan and Hannah Youngblood and Nicole and Amanda Blum. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister, Zoe Chambers of Clarksville, Iowa.


Pearl B. Seims

Pearl B. Siems, 81, of Dumont, passed away December 9, 2002 at the Parkview Nursing & Rehab Center in Waterloo, Iowa. She was born on January 2, 1921 in Dumont, Iowa, to John and Nellie (Sands) Bennett. Pearl attended the Dumont Schools. She was married to Benjamin Siems on January 12, 1938 in Ackley, Iowa. Pearl worked as a cook in many restaurants in Dumnt and the Nursing Home, she also was a babysitter in Dumont. Pearl was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing with her husband, her cat Ginger, and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Pearl is survived by her three daughters: Dorothy and husband Roland Miller of Waterloo; Barbara and husband Robert Presley of Oskaloosa, and Beverly Wedeking of Nora Springs; a sister: Alice Arns of Waverly; nine grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, two sisters, and one half sister. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2002 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Mike Shaffer and Rev. David VanNetter officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the soloist, Maggie Peters. Pallbearers were Jeff Miller, Ben Hesse, Matt Miller, Travis Moore, Brian Kruse and John Bushbaum. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont in charge of arrangements.

Reint Schneiderman

Reint Schneiderman, 83, of Bristow, Iowa passed away December 16, 2002 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. Reint was born December 13, 1919 in Ackley, Iowa to Reint and Anna (Schroeder) Schneiderman. He attended schools in Sinclair, Monroe #1 in Butler County in Parkersburg, Iowa. Reint worked as a farmer, farming north of Bristow from 1947-1984. He was affiliated with the First Reformed Church in Bristow. He enjoyed farming, fixing mechical things, welding and overhauling engines. Reint is suvived by four brothers: Tony Schneiderman of Thornton, Herman Schneiderman of Parkersburg, Bob Schneiderman of Bristow and John Schneiderman of Bristow; a sister: Alice Lupkes of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Tommy, Eddie and Bill; and one sister Ann Asche. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, December 19, 2002 at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home with Rev. Remigio Panlaqui officiating. Pallbearers were Jim Lupkes, Larry Asche, Arthur Lupkes, Doyle Schneiderman, Todd Schneiderman and Bradley Schneiderman. Honorary pallbearers were DuWayne Schneiderman and Mark Schneiderman. Final resting place was in the Oak Hill Cemetery rural Bristow, Iowa.


 

Delores Ruth DeBerg

Delores Ruth DeBerg, 71, of Bristow, passed away December 17, 2002 at her home in Bristow after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born Janaury 18, 1931 in rural Butler County, Iowa to Ray & Leola (Hutchinson) Hahn. Delores graduated from Bristow High School and then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was married to Dawayne DeBerg on November 27, 1950 in Bristow. Delores was a school teacher, teaching in Fairview Schools, Bristow Schools and taught in Allison-Bristow Schools for 19 years before retiring. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Bristow. Delores was actively involved in many church activities including numerous years as a Sunday school teacher. She also enjoyed teaching, baking, spending time with her family and taking daily walks with her friend Marilyn. She is survived by her husband Dawayne DeBerg of Bristow, two daughters: Pam and husband Dave Benson of Anamosa and Stacy and husband Robert Harms of Clarksville; three sons: Kevin and wife Sandy DeBerg of Reinbeck, Kent and wife Terri DeBerg of Pella and Brent and wife Brenda DeBerg of Bristow; a brother: Burdine Hahn of Hampton and two sisters: Maxine Chesnut of Clarksville and Betty Weiland of Dumont and six grandchildren. Delores is preceded in death by her parents and one brother Gary. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, December 20, 2002 at the First Reformed Church in Bristow with Rev. Scott Summers officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Melvin Mennen accompanying the soloist, Eldon Siemers. Pallbearers were David Benson, Steve DeBerg, Tom VanDyke, Jeff Kielman, Jerry Weiland and Jason Uhlenhopp. Final resting place was in the Oak Hill Cemetery rural Bristow, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Martha "Marti" Kramer

Martha “Marti” Kramer, age 65, of Lake Ponderosa, Montezuma, Iowa, formerly of Marshalltown, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 17, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory, with the Rev. Jennifer Daniel, First United Methodist Church, officiating. Following the cremation, there was a private Family Interment. Memorials may be directed to the Martha Kramer Memorial Fund. Marti was born July 21, 1937, in Ackley, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Ruth (Eisentrager) Abel. She grew up in Dumont, Iowa, area. She graduated from the Dumont High School. Marti married Bernard Dean Kramer on June 15, 1954, in Mason City, Iowa. Marti and Bernie moved to Marshalltown in 1961. She worked as a secretary at Tempo, Equifax, Seberg Pharmacy and lastly at Manpower, where she retired in 1990. She was an avid bowler, card player and really enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was a member of the Women’s Bowling Association. Marti is survived by two sons, Brian Kramer, of Newton, Iowa, and Kent and wife Melissa Kramer of Marshalltown; a daughter, Monica Kramer of Marshalltown; her mother, Ruth Abel of Dumont; a grandson, Lucas Dean Kramer and a step-grandson, Dacoda Ewalt-Kramer. She was preceded in death by her father and husband, Bernie on October 26, 2001.


John "Jack" E. Dohlman

John “Jack” E. Dohlman, 81, of Hampton, Iowa died on December 22, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton of natural causes. On January 2, 1921, in Franklin County, Iowa, John was born the son of John H. and Bertha (Weiner) Dohlman. He was educated in the Hansell and Geneva School. John served in the Army during WWII. On April 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Louise Bender in Charles City, Iowa. John worked at the Hansell Elevator and United Hydraulics in Hampton before retiring. He enjoyed gardening, loved the outdoors and enjoyed his family and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Louise Dohlman of Hampton; three daughters: Pat Chapin of Phoenix, Arizona, Barb Orr of Des Moines, Iowa; and Kathy and husband, Todd Sheppard of Hampton; three sons: Denny and wife LuAnn Jackson of Webster City, Iowa, John Dohlman of Hampton and Alan and wife Judy Dohlman of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three sisters: Leola Roegner of Hampton, Bertha and husband Robert Woods of Iowa Falls, and Helen O’Dea of Hampton; two brothers: Delos and wife Alice Dohlman of Hampton and Dallas Dohlman of Hampton; thirteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one son in infancy. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 27, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, Iowa with Rev. Julie Poore-Christensen officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton was in charge of arrangements.


Swanetta Groeneveld

Swanetta Groeneveld, age 98, of Aplington, Iowa, was born August 24, 1904, near Britt, Iowa, the daughter of John and Annie Wolff Junker. She attended country school near her home and graduated from 8th grade and then graduated from Aplington High School in May, 1923. She then took a 12 week course at Cedar Falls Teacher’s College. Swanetta taught rural schools throughout Butler County until she married. At the age of 15 years, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized on June 25, 1922 by Rev. H.W. Wedel and received into the membership of the Baptist Church. Swanetta was married to Jans Groeneveld on February 11, 1931, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa by Rev. Herman Lohr. This union was blessed with five children. The couple lived on a farm south of Aplington until 1962 when they moved into Aplington. She was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church where she was active in the Benevolent Society. She was a homemaker who enjoyed doing chores on the farm, gardening, baking and she especially loved to spend Sunday afternoons with her family. Swanetta died December 15, 2002, at Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jans Groeneveld, in 1964; her parents; twin sons, Roland and Robert Groeneveld in infancy; two brothers, George Junker and Fred Junker; one sister, Minnie Groeneveld and one grandson, Cory Groeneveld, September 19, 1994. She is survived by two sons, David Groeneveld of Aplington and Donald (Janet) Groeneveld, Aplington; one daughter, Esther (Joe M.) Schipper, Parkersburg, Iowa; twelve grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Anna Junker and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 19, 2002 Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa. Officiating the service, Rev. Rod Thompson and Rev. Donald Patet. Organist was Becky Ostercamp. Granddaughter Melissa Groeneveld was the vocalist, singing “Our Life Is Like A Summer Day” and “Ten Thousand Angels.” Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “God Be With You.” Honorary Casketbearers were her granddaughters; Karla Arends, Kathy Jansen, Karen Luhring, Kristin Johnson, Denise Priske, Melissa Groeneveld, and Brittany Groeneveld. Casketbearers were her grandsons; Daniel Groeneveld, Dennis Groeneveld, Duane Groeneveld, Troy Groeneveld, and Curtis Schipper. The 6th casketbearer position was left open in memory of grandson Cory Groeneveld. Interment in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial may be directed to the family.


Walter Paul

Walter Paul, age 90, of Aplington, Iowa, was born December 24, 1911, in Fessenden, North Dakota, the son of Fred B. and Hattie (Reints) Paul. Walter graduated from Fessenden High School. He married Evelyn Ontjes on August 23, 1937, at the Walnut Street Baptist Church in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple lived in North Dakota and Minnesota before returning to Aplington in 1963. Walter worked for the United States Postal Service and the Federal Reserve Bank. Walter was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church and the Lions Club. He had a love for trains and was very involved with his grandson, Paul. He loved music, was a fine pianist, and played several brass instruments, including trumpet and trombone. At 12:15 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2002, Walter died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, on January 6, 2001; his parents; one brother, Gordon Paul; and one sister, Alma Butcher. Walter is survived by one daughter, Dr. Marilyn Verhey and her husband, Dr. Lynn Verhey of San Francisco, California; one grandson, Paul Verhey and his wife, Lisa Kaplan of Middletown, California; one great-grandson, Amida Verhey; one brother, Fred L. Paul of St. Paul, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 19, 2002 at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa. Officiating the service, Rev. Rod Thompson, and Rev. Donald Patet. Grandson Paul Verhey gave a reading titled “My Grandfather.” Organist was Cami Haugstad. Vocal Quartet; Phyllis Uhlenhopp, Joyce Frey, Gordon Hippen, and Bob Frey. Congregational Hymns were “All The Way My Savior Leads Me”, “Blessed Assurance”, “God Will Take Care Of You.” Casketbearers were Bob Frey, Steve Haugstad, Ivan Lindaman, Rick Gersema, Bob Spencer, and Elvin Uhlenhopp. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Aplington Baptist Church.
