Alice Peterson

Alice M. Peterson, 66, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, September 3, 2003, at the Belmond
Medical Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, September 8, at the St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
Alice Mae, the daughter of Morse and Marie (Leens)
Hunst, was born on March 15, 1937 in Belmond. She graduated from the Belmond High
School in 1956. Later that year she married Bob Iehl. They made their home
in Belmond.
In 1973 she married Jim Peterson. The couple made their home
in Belmond. Alice was a homemaker, worked in daycare for twenty years, and
also worked as a waitress.
Family was very important to Alice, and her life
revolved around her three girls. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and the Trampel
Arena Rodeos. Alice liked listening to Alan Jackson. She was a
very upbeat, positive person. Alice had a strong faith and was very
involved at the St. Francis Xavier Church, where she was a member of the
Catholic Daughters.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Bob Iehl; husband, Jim Peterson; one child in infancy; and one brother in
infancy.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Deb (Matt) Studer of
Belmond; granddaughters, Katie Magnuson and Cheyenne Studer of Belmond;
sisters, Laura Saunders of Belmond and Bonnie Stewart of Garner;
mother-in-law, Janice Olinger of Meservey; sisters-in-law, Yvonne (Rich)
Rodamaker of Charles City and Charlene (Willis) Anderson of Belmond;
brother-in-law, Dean Bridges of Mason City; nieces and nephews, Jill
Stoffer and her husband, Mark Allen of Belmond, Lonny Stoffer of Missouri,
Leland Stoffer of Florida, Pam (John) Van Gerpen of Garner, Amy Modderman
of Illinois and Jane (Pat) Greiman of California.

Henry Koenen
September 9, 2003
Henry A. Koenen, 83, of Latimer, died on Friday, September 5, 2003, at the Heritage
Care Center in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 9, at the First
Reformed Church in Alexander, with burial in the Alexander Cemetery with
military rites.
Henry, the son of Harm and Gazena Halfwassen Koenen,
was born on July 20, 1920 in rural Latimer. He attended the Plain View County
School. Henry served four years in the United States Navy during WW II
aboard the USS Hermitage.
On July 22, 1942, he married Viola Stoffer at
Alexander. They farmed near Alexander until 1978, then they farmed near
Latimer until retirement in 1983.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers,
Harm and Peter; and sisters, Grace, Anna, Rebecca and Helen.
Henry is survived by his wife; and children, Dianne
(Michael) Long of Mason City, Janet (Thomas) Osborne of Tucson, Arizona
and Craig Koenen of Newton.

Iola Grimm
September 9, 2003
Iola Grimm, 88, of Kanawha, died on Friday, September 5, 2003, at
the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 9, at the Kanawha Lutheran Church,
with burial in the Norway Township Cemetery.
Iola, the daughter of Torres and Anna Asbe Wicks, was
born on March 26, 1915 south of Kanawha. She graduated from the Clarion High
School in 1932.
On July 19, 1934, Iola married Walter Grimm at River
Falls, Wisconsin. The couple moved back to the Kanawha area where they
farmed until they retired.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Walter; five sisters; and three brothers.
Iola is survived by her daughter, Deanna (Jock) Stevenson
of Cedar Rapids; sons, Howard (Deloris) Grimm of Council Bluffs, Thomas
(Sandy) Grimm of Brainerd, Minnesota, Terry (Julie) Grimm of Garner and
Robert (Sharon) Grimm of Kanawha.

Lova McAlpine
September 30, 2003
Lova "Rosemary" Rosebud Leonard McAlpine, died on
Saturday, September 6, 2003 in
Oakland, California. Lova will be laid to rest with a private burial in
the Belmond Cemetery at a later date.
Lova Leonard, was born on November 15, 1913, at the family
farm to her parents, Arthur Wallace and Erma (Meacham) Leonard. She was
the first of five children. She was raised on the farm and attended
country schools. Lova graduated from the Belmond High School at 16 years of
age. She attended Cedar Falls Teacher's College. Later she taught school
at Plum Grove, Sheriff and Didio, one-room country schools near Belmond.
On June 20, 1936, she married Robert J. McAlpine at
the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Shortly thereafter they
moved to California where their first child was born. They remained there
for a few years, then moved to Waverly. Their second child was born after
returning to California to live. In 1955 the family moved to Piedmont,
California where they made their permanent home.
Lova was never tardy or missed one day of high
school. She was a square dancer for over 70 years. She was a founding
member of the Lucy Standish Chapter of the Wright County D.A.R. and also
was a member of the Mayflower Society.
Lova loved family history and
researched the family genealogy most of her life. She enjoyed returning to
Belmond to visit family and old friends. Lova enjoyed sewing and knitting.
Lova was preceded in death by her husband; brother,
Arthur Leonard; sister, Icle Severson; and her parents, Arthur and Erma
Leonard.
Survivors include her son, Leonard (Monica) McAlpine of
Fremont, California and daughter, Patricia (Pete Kale) Olson of Jamestown,
California; granddaughters, Marie McAlpine, Stephanie McAlpine and Christine Estrella; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Jimmy Costello, all of
California; sister, Cleona Tegland of Belmond and Arlene Allen of San
Jose, California.

Delwyn Stromer
September 9, 2003
Delwyn D. Stromer, 73, of West Des Moines, formerly of Garner, died
on Sunday,
September 7, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be
held on Friday, September 12, at 10:30 a.m., at the Zion Evangelical Reformed
Church in Garner. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 4-8:00 p.m. and one hour before the service.
The Cataldo Funeral Home is in
charge of the arrangements.
Delwyn Dean, the son of Aaron Arthur and Ruby Evelyn
Goll Stromer, was born on April 22, 1930 on a farm southwest of Garner. He
graduated from the Garner High School.
He married Harriet June Ostendorf, on
August 26, 1950, at the EUB Church in Meservey. He served in the U.S. Army
in the Korean War. Then he farmed.
He was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives
in 1966 and served 23 years, including time as Speaker of the House. In
1989, they moved to Kansas City where Del worked as the Federal General
Services Administrator. In 1993, them moved to West Des Moines, where he
served as agriculture advisor to U.S. Senator Grassley. He retired in
1999.
He was preceded in death by his father; son, Randall;
and brother, Norman.
Survivors include his wife; mother; daughters, Linda
(Doug) Upmeyer of Garner and Pamela (Robert) Birkenholz of Columbus, Ohio;
son, David (Kim) Stromer of Garner; daughter-in-law, Michelle (Joel) Doble
of Garner; and sisters, Vivian (Dwight) Bovenmyer and Marian (Allan)
DeWitt, all of Garner.

Paula Kain
September 16, 2003
Paula Kain, 60, died on Monday, September 8, 2003, at her home in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 12, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly.
Rev. James Carpenter officiated and vocalists were Kathy Carpenter and
Harlan Gillespie. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery near Cedar Falls.
Paula was born on January 10, 1943 in Lake Park, Iowa,
the daughter of Everett and Alva Anna (Puck) Schwarzenbach. She received
her B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and taught
elementary school in Belmond for 19 years. Recently she endowed the
National Patient Advocacy Office in Des Moines.
Paula was preceded in death by her father; and a
brother, Lyle Schwarzenbach.
She is survived by her sons, James (Laura) Kain, Jr.
of Iowa City, Brad (Penny) Kain of Eldridge and Matthew (Diana) Kain of
Riverside; four grandchildren; her mother, Alva Schwarzenbach of Iowa
City; brothers, Everett (Patty) Schwarzenbach of Egg Harbor City, New
Jersey and Dan Schwarzenbach of Bristol, Connecticut; sister, Pauline
(Keith) Branstetter of Iowa City; and sister-in-law, Arlene Schwarzenbach
of Cedar Falls.

Norman Watne
September 16, 2003
Norman Watne, 87, died on Friday, September 12, 2003, at the Rotary Ann Home in
Eagle Grove.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 15, at the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Eagle Grove, with burial in Holmes Lutheran Cemetery.
Norman was born on November 19, 1915 in Humboldt, the
son of Oscar and Inger Risseon Watne.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three
brothers; and a nephew.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Evelyn Watne of
Belmond; eight nephews including Ted (Barb) Watne of Belmond, Craig
(Connie) Watne of Belmond, Karl (Judy) Watne of Galt, Tom (Jan) Watne of
Galt, Knute (Etter) Watne of Galt and Stan (Pam) Watne; five nieces,
Marcia (Earl) Kolbeck of Ashton, Susan (Leland) Halfpop of Goodell, Phebe
(Charles) Soma of Belmond, Norma (Jerry) McNertney of Ames and Miriam
Vernon of Eagle Grove.

Catherine Meinders
September 24, 2003
Catherine B. "Kate" Meinders, died on Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at Sheffield.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 19, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with
Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Organist was Lyla Van Horn. Casket bearers were Brad
Warren, Randy Frohling, Keith Koenen, Scott Pottebaum, Paul Koenen and
Eugene Frohling.
Catherine B. "Kate" Koenen, was born
on November 27, 1904
in Meservey, the daughter of Bernhard and Helen (Pals) Koenen. She
attended the Wisner Township School through the eighth grade. She worked at
the general store in Meservey and would help new mothers care for their
children in their homes.
On November 28, 1934, Catherine married Louis Meinders
in George, Iowa. The ceremony was performed by her brother, Rev. Peter
Koenen. They farmed the family farm south of Meservey until 1975, when they
moved to town.
Kate enjoyed crocheting and hand quilting with her
sister, baking angel food cakes and cookies, playing cards, especially
"500" with her friends and she liked music. She was a member of the
Senior Citizens and the Meservey Kitchen Clatter Band. Kate was a member
of the First Reformed Church of Meservey, where she taught Sunday School,
was a charter member of the Ladies Society and a member of the choir.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents;
great-grandson, Tyson; and brothers, Peter, Bernard and Johnnie.
Survivors are her daughter, Janice (Tom) Waddingham of
Thornton; grandchildren, Paige (Brad) Warren of Centerville, Kendra
(Scott) Pottebaum of Runnells and Sarah Waddingham of Meriden, Connecticut;
great-grandchildren, Kolby, Kade, Zachary and Katherine; sister, Gertie
Frohling of Rowan; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Koenen of Sheffield and
Hattie Koenen of Belmond.

George Riekens, Sr.

George Riekens, Sr., 86, of Forest City, formerly of Belmond, died
on Friday,
September 19, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, September 23, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Rev.
Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial was in the Madison Township Cemetery in
Forest City.

Aline Marie Burgess
September 24, 2003
Aline Marie (Kilgore) Burgess, 91, died on Sunday, September 21, 2003, at the Muse
Norris Hospice in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, September 24, at the
United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating.
Burial was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.
Aline Kilgore, was born on December 12, 1911 in Union
County, the daughter of Clay Clarence "C.C." and Elizabeth Marie (Holberg)
Kilgore. She graduated from high school in Shannon City, Iowa. Aline
continued her post secondary education for two years at the University of
Iowa and later completed her B.A. Degree at Drake University.
Following her education, Aline was a teacher for rural
schools in Wright and Hancock Counties. She was a Librarian for the Klemme
School and later for the Belmond School where she retired in 1980.
Aline married Joseph W. Burgess on March 9, 1934 at
the United Brethren Church Parsonage in Goodell. They farmed and raised
their children on the Burgess homestead north of Goodell.
In addition to
her career in education and farming with her husband, Aline was a home
maker. She loved any activity that included her family. She enjoyed
visiting with friends, playing cards and being a 4-H Leader. She served on
the church board and was involved in activities with the church ladies.
Favorite pastimes included fishing and bird watching. She liked to read
and keep up on current events. Aline enjoyed music and playing the piano.
She had accompanied her mother on various occasions and played for silent
movies. Aline made pottery and handmade quilts which she gave to others as
keepsakes.
Aline and Joe lived at Prairie View in Garner for
four years before moving to Clear Lake where Aline lived at the Courtyard
Assisted Living while Joe resided at the Oakwood Care Center. Following his
death last year, Aline became a resident at Oakwood.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband;
son, Dean Burgess; and brothers, Claire and Lyndon.
Survivors are her son, Thomas Clay Burgess of Clear Lake;
daughter, JoAnn Burgess of Clear Lake; daughter-in-law, Peggy Burgess of
Hampton; sister, Ellen Withers of Paisley, Oregon; granddaughters,
Kimberly (Jeff) Loggins of Hampton and Lynn (Johannes) Krupp of Sweden;
and great-grandson, Tyler Loggins of Hampton.

Billy Duay

Billy Dean Duay, 72, of Anamosa, died on Tuesday, September 23, 2003, following a brief
illness.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 26, at the First Congregational
United Church of Christ in Anamosa, with interment in the Cass Cemetery, rural
Anamosa.
Billy was born on April 26, 1931 at Ft. Dodge, the son
of Joseph Henry and Ruth Cecil Malle Duay. He attended college in
California and received his Seminary Degree from the North American Seminary
in Sioux Falls. He later received a PhD in Psychology from the Claremont
Graduate School in California.
Billy pastored churches for 47 years in Iowa,
Wyoming, California and Nebraska. On May 1, 1984, while serving in
Belmond, he married his wife, Debbie. In 1987 they moved to Anamosa, where
he served as Senior Minister of the First Congregational United Church of
Christ until his death.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Michael (Cheryl) of
Utah and Troy of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Karla (Jerry) Corrick of
Colorado, Trisha (James) Meyers of Cedar Rapids and Jane Ferry of
California; and a sister, Shirliee Schlenker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers,
Joe and Cyril; sister, Ruth; his first wife, Betty; daughter, Sally;
grandson, Jason; father-in-law, Billy Schuver; and brother-in-law, Larry
Schuver.

Glenn Slining

Glenn Dale Slining, 82, died on Wednesday, September 24, 2003, in Silverton, Oregon,
after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 30, in Silverton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and
Eunice; son, Ronald; brothers, Bob and Duane; and sister, Arlene Davis.
Survivors are his wife, Mary; children, Vicki,
Virginia, Judy, Daryl and Valerie; sister, Mildred Macri of Des Moines;
brother, Jug Slining of Babbitt, Minnesota; and sisters, Jo Kuester of
Belmond and Janet Thornton of Huxley.

Herb Hill
September 30, 2003
Herbert Anton Hill, 89, died on Thursday, September 25, 2003.
Funeral services were
held on Monday, September 29, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Rev.
Rod Hopp and Rev. Lowell H. Halverson officiating. Interment was in the
Belmond Cemetery.
Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist and
Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Ushers were Al Charlson and Loren Bamford.
Casket bearers were Harold Hill, Clifford Olson, Paul Rokke, Harold
Buseman, Tom Hill, Bob Hill and Larry Severson.
Herbert Anton Hill, the son of John and Christian (Hillestad)
was born on January 16, 1914, near Belmond. He was baptized on April 8, 1914
and confirmed in 1930, both at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Belmond.
Herb farmed his family's farm west of Belmond. He was
united in marriage to Esther May Steenblock on March 1, 1942, by Rev. O. M.
Severseike, then pastor of the St. Olaf-Trinity Parish. In 1950, they
moved to a farm one mile west of Belmond where they continued farming
together until 1978, when they retired and moved into town.
They were
members of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where Herbert was an active member,
serving as Deacon for a number of years and ushered.
He was known as the "fix it" guy by his family and
other relatives. He enjoyed wood-working, such as toys for children, one
of which was a rocking horse for their daughter. It is still in use by the
great-grandchildren. He also made wooden clocks for family members and
friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; sisters,
Josie in infancy, Carrie and Annie; brothers, Joseph, Henry and Chester;
and nephew, Jerry Lewis.
Survivors are his wife, Esther; his daughter, Susan
(Thomas) Virkus of Mason City; three granddaughters, and their families, Mellisa Burkhardt and son, Dustin of Mason City, Bonnie Cahill and
children, Shaquille, Danae, and Isaac of Muncie, Indiana, Kristin, (Merle) Vosburgh and children, Jesse, Joseph, and Jacob of Mason City;
sister-in-law, Adelaide Hill of Belmond; brother-in-law, Peter Steenblock
of Bishop, California; and several nieces and nephews.

James Austin

James "Jim" Austin, 58, of Klemme, died on
Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at the Mercy Medical
Center, Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 3, at the United Methodist Church
in Garner ,with burial in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.
James, the son of Cecil and Florence (Ward) Austin,
was born on February 3, 1945 at Mason City. He attended school at Easton,
Minnesota and worked as a mechanic in the North Iowa area. On February 21,
1970 he married Joyce Steenblock. They made their home near Klemme.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two
brothers, Tommy and Richard Austin.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Tina (Danny)
Miller and their children, Cody, Logan and Kaitlin all of Garner; brothers
and sisters, Hazel Raprager of Plymouth, Harvey (Dorothy) Austin of
Cartersville, Mildred Brooks of Morris, Illinois, Lyle (LaDonna) Austin of
Kellerton, Ethel (Glen) Endress of Mason City, Deloris Rinnels of Michigan
and Thelma (Rick) Beightol of Plymouth.
