Margaret Reasoner

October 14, 2003
 
Margaret May Reasoner, died on Friday, October 3, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 6, 2003, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

Music was provided by Dona Cleveland, organist, JoAn Skyrme, pianist and Cyndy McNulty, soloist. Honorary bearer was Owen Bateson. Casket bearers were Charles Holmes, John Holmes, William Eliason, Bill Johnson, Art Benetti and Richard Bloemke.

Margaret Emerson, the youngest child of four siblings, was born on Mary 1, 1918 in Rowan, the daughter of Albert and Mabel (Hiams) Emerson. She graduated from the Rowan High school in 1936 where she was active in choir, girls basketball and various church activities. She attended the Gates Business College in Waterloo.

On August 10, 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, Russell E. Reasoner at Arco, Minnesota. Margaret accompanied Russell for a time in his employment travels as an "extra board" for the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad. They made their home in Crystal Lake in 1941 when Russell became the depot agent.

Margaret was employed as a secretary to the Superintendent of the Crystal Lake Schools and was very active in the community and her church. She served as president of the women's circle and sang in choir.

In 1960 Russell, Margaret and their daughter, Pamela moved to Belmond. Margaret was employed with Bill Johnson's Lutheran Brotherhood Agency over 12 years before her retirement. After retirement Margaret and her husband enjoyed wintering in Arizona.

Margaret was a member of the P.E.O. Chapter LV and served as an officer and president. She and Russell were active in the Methodist Church, the Methodist Youth Fellowship, various circles and other church activities.

Margaret enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, crafts and had done some painting and drawing. Two of her fondest pastimes were flower gardening and Thursday afternoon picnics with her daughter.

Margaret became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in December of 1994. She looked forward to participating in many activities including bingo and penny pitch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Ruth Holmes and Esther Kercheval; and brother, Edwin Emerson.

Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Rae (John) Kass of Apple Valley, Minnesota; granddaughter, Christina Nicole Kass of Eagan, Minnesota; two brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

Virginia Halfpap

October 7, 2003
 
Virginia (Ginny) Halfpap, 80, of Mason City, died on Sunday, October 5, 2003, at the Hospice of North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 10, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Dan Voss officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 8, from 4-6:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. Visitation will then be held again on Thursday, October 9, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey and one hour prior to services at the church.

Virginia was born on March 13, 1923 in Meservey, to Frank and Grace (Sloss) Nissen.

She was united in marriage to Richard Halfpap on June 10, 1950, in Meservey. A life-long member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, she was actively involved in teaching Sunday School and playing the organ.

Robert Bowman

October 14, 2003

Robert "Bob" E. Bowman, 79, of Whitesboro, Texas and a summer resident of Belmond, died on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at the Belmond Medical Center.

A prayer service was held on Friday, October 10, at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond, conducted by Rev. Michael Druhl of the Belmond United Methodist Church. Another service was held in Gordonville, Texas on Tuesday, October 14, with Pastor Randy Pemberton and Pastor Donald Darling officiating. Military honors were provided by the Whitesboro Veterans. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Whitesboro.

Casket bearers were Scott Bowman, Dr. Robert Snow, John Emery, Steve Connor, Michael Branch and Sean Oitmen.

Robert Earl was born on May 10, 1924 in Des Moines, the son of Jesse and Edith (Holmes) Bowman. He graduated from the Woodside High School in Des Moines and served in the United States Navy during WW II. He was a PBM Bomber Pilot and attained the rank of Lt. JG.

He married Lola Nelson, on October 24, 1946 at Des Moines. They lived in the Des Moines area where Bob was employed by John Deere as a quality control supervisor for 30 years. Bob was a member of the UAW #450, a member of the Northside Saylor Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Highland Park Masonic Lodge where he was a 32rd degree Mason.

Bob loved tractors and the world of agriculture, and he attended various farm shows. He and Lola raised Jack Russell Terriers for many years. Bob enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren, raising farm animals, gardening and airplanes. The last 14 years Bob and Lola lived most of the year in Whitesboro and spent a few months each summer in Belmond.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ralph and Roy; and sister, Maxine Witt.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 57 years; daughters, Pauline (John) Emergy of Ardmore, Oklahoma and Carolyn Jo (Robert) Snow of Whitesboro; son, Scott (Sue) Bowman of Des Moines; daughters, Laura (Michael) Branch of Gainesville, Texas and Stacey (Lloyd) Edmisten of Whitesboro; sisters, Martha Patterson of Des Moines and JoAnn Thomas of Kennesaw, Georgia; brother, Jim Bowman of Des Moines; sisters, Jane Bowman of Des Moines, Velma Davis of Ankeny, Thelma Moore of Mesa, Arizona and Mary Francis Blife of Val Rico, Florida; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Alida Dorenkamp

October 14, 2003

Alida Dorenkamp, 95, died on Friday, October 10, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 13, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with the Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Alida, the daughter of Henry and Hannah Frey Suntken, was born on October 24, 1907, in Wisner Township in Franklin County. She attended the Wisner Township No. 5 Country School. She worked in Alexander for a couple of years.

Alida married Emil Dorenkamp on December 18, 1930 at Alexander. The couple farmed one year in Franklin County and several years in Wright County. Emil and Alida purchased their own farm north of Meservey in 1942.

Emil died on October 15, 1987. Alida remained on the farm until ill health forced her to move to the Klemme Apartments in 1989. In 1991 she moved to the McBurney Apartments in Belmond. Alida entered the Belmond Health Care Center in August 2003.

Alida is remembered for cooking Sunday dinners for her family. She loved gardening and flowers and adored her grandchildren. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey.

Alida was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Clarence Nannenga; grandson, David; great-granddaughter, April; sister, Johana; and brothers, Onno and Bert.

Alida is survived by her daughter, Mavis Nannenga of Thornton; grandchildren, Marjorie (Ron) Tannahill of Klemme, Dorothy (Robert) DeSloover of Hampton, Linda (Brad) Groesbeck of Garner and Randall (Deanna) Nannenga of Klemme; great-grandchildren, Crystal, Jason, Ashley, Amy, Ethan, Bethany and Anastasia; step-great-grandchildren, Chad and Penny; sister, Grace Kuhlers of Belmond; and sister-in-law, Esther Bohning of Belmond.

Alvina Helps

October 14, 2003

Alvina Jennie (Buss) Helps, 96, a life long resident of the Klemme area, died on Saturday, October 11, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center where she had resided the past four years.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 14, at the Klemme United Methodist Church, with Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery near Klemme.

Music was provided by Madelyn Priebe, organist and Steve Schmidt, soloist. Ushers were Duane Pringnitz and Arlyn Waddingham. Casket bearers were Everett Guth, Clarence Gilpin, Jeff Hinman, John Haugen, Robert Hinman and John Schwichtenberg.

Alvina was born on July 25, 1907 on a farm east of Klemme, the daughter of Elko and Jennie (Harberts) Buss. She graduated from the Garner High School. She taught rural school in Avery Township for several years.

On April 14, 1933, she married Dwight H. Helps at Klemme. The couple farmed and raised their family east of Klemme. Following retirement in 1980, they moved into Klemme. In addition to farming with her husband, Alvina was a life-long homemaker.

Favorite pastimes included sewing, quilting and doing handiwork. She did tailoring and mending of clothing for her family. Alvina enjoyed music and had played the piano in earlier years. She was very much a family person who loved children and cherished any activity that included them. Alvina was an excellent cook and baker. She will be remembered by her family for her wonderful pies, cookies and cream filled cupcakes. She liked flowers and raising a garden. She was a member of the Klemme United Methodist Church and a charter member of the women's society. She and her husband wintered in Texas.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; son, Stanley; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Krabbe; brothers, Rank, Harry and Edgar Buss; sisters, Hazel Johnson and Gail Becker; and infant brothers, Franklin and Francis.

Survivors are daughters, Eunice (Lowell) Broer of New Providence and Jo Ann (Russell) VerHelst of Klemme; son, Raymond (Esther) Buss of Klemme; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Winnie Buss and Dorothy Pringnitz.

William C. Tyrrell, Jr.

William C. (Bill) Tyrrell, Jr., died on Monday, October 13, 2003.  

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 1:30 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Beaumont, Texas. He will be buried next to his wife at the family mausoleum at the Magnolia Cemetery in Beaumont. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and the spouses of his granddaughters.

Bill was born in Beaumont on January 16, 1906. He was the grandson of Capt. William C. Tyrrell, one of the early entrepreneurs of Beaumont and southeast Texas.

Bill spent most of his early years on the Tyrrell family farm in Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High where he was an accomplished athlete, lettering in baseball, basketball and track. He then attended the University of Iowa for two years, followed by two years at the University of Colorado, where he lettered in golf, graduating with a degree in Business Administration, and met his wife of more than 70 years, Catherine Ross Sullivan. Bill was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity at both schools.

Following graduation and marriage in 1930, Bill and Catherine moved back to Beaumont where he managed a structural steel business. After the birth of their first daughter, Jeanne Ross, the family moved to Belmond where Bill and his brother, Preston managed the Tyrrell family farming operating until the end of World War II. During this time daughters, Lynne Ellen and Frances Alice were born. Bill served two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives.

In 1946, following the death of his father, Bill was appointed Trustee of the W. C. Tyrrell Trust and moved his family back to Beaumont. He served in that capacity until November 1966 when the trust was dissolved. He then managed the Tyrrell family properties as agent for the entire family until his retirement in 1985. He remained active in business affairs, managing his personal properties and consulting with his successor, Frank Eastman, the husband of daughter, Jeanne.

During his active years in Beaumont, Bill was selected as King Rex VII by the Knights of the Neches in 1956. He was a director of the Community Chest (now United Way) and was general chairman in 1960. He was a director of American National Bank (now Hibernia) and Beaumont State Bank (now Bank of America). He was a trustee and later a governor of Scott and White Clinic and Hospital in Temple, Texas. He was a director of the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Assn. He was active in the Beaumont Rotary Club where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by his family in November 1983. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a patron and active participant in the Beaumont Symphony Society, the Beaumont Music Commission, the Tyrrell Historical Library, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas and the Lamar University Cardinal Club.

Preceding him in death were his wife; parents, W. C. and Ellen Christie Tyrrell; brothers, Harry F. Tyrrell of Beaumont, W. Preston Tyrrell of Belmond and David Tyrrell of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister, Carol Kyle of Beaumont; daughters, Jeanne Eastman and Frances Gathright; sons-in-law, C. Kent Gathright of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Clifford Campbell of Houston.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Lynne Campbell of Houston; son-in-law, Frank Eastman of Beaumont; grandchildren, Ross (Laura) Eastman, Catherine (Frank) Hevrdejs and William (Dianne) Campbell all of Houston, Bryan (Donna) Campbell of Austin, Cary (Leigh) Gathright, Jr. of Tulsa and Grayson Royer of Colorado Springs; 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Katherine Tyrrell of Shreveport; nieces, Elizabeth Patterson of Dallas, Marion Koontz of Cedar Rapids, Emille Kyle Chenault of San Antonio and Sybil Patten of Shreveport; and nephews, Dwight Tyrrell of Belmond, David Tyrrell, Jr. of Dallas and William Tyrrell of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Cecilia McLaughlin Hanson

October 21, 2003

Cecilia A. McLaughlin Hanson, 67, of Lacey, Washington, formerly of Belmond, died on Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at the Mother Joseph Care Center in Olympia, Washington.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 25, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 5-8:00 p.m., on Friday, October 24, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond. There will be a Parish Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Cecilia was the daughter of Edward C. and Vineta Swift McLaughlin of Belmond. She grew up in Pioneer and Gilmore City.

In 1953, she married Roger D. Hanson and for the next 26 years they lived in Humboldt, Riverdale, North Dakota, Coulee Dam, Washington and Centralia, Washington. She moved to Olympia in 1979 after her divorce. Cecilia started working for the government in 1977 and worked off and on until her retirement in August of last year. She enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening and spending time with her family. Cecilia also belonged to several peace and justice groups.

Cecilia is survived by sons, Robert of Atascadero, California and Timothy of Bellingham, Washington; daughters, Debra Lind and Judy Hanson of Olympia; five grandchildren; sister, Frances (Dan) Gilroy of Apple Valley, Minnesota; brothers, Clement (Cheryl) McLaughlin of Belmond and Thomas (Janice) McLaughlin of Troy, Michigan.

Cleo Wilson

October 21, 2003

Cleo James (Skinny) Wilson, 78, died on Tuesday, October 14, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 17, at the United Methodist Church in Altoona. A memorial service in Belmond will be held in November.

Cleo was born in Kanawha and grew up in Belmond. He and his wife, Ann farmed west of Belmond and raised three sons. They retired to town. Later they moved to Altoona.

Survivors include his wife; and sons, Thomas (Louise), John and Richard (Melissa) Wilson.

Karen Monson

October 28, 2003

Karen Monson, 35, on Clear Lake, died on Friday, October 24, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 29, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with burial at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Karen Ann, the daughter of Daniel and Phyllis (Brandt) Sobek, was born on April 29, 1968 at Mason City. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Garner. She was raised in rural Klemme, graduating from the Klemme High School in 1986. During high school she was a cheerleader and active in 4-H, band, choir, and drama. She attended NIACC and UNI, graduating from UNI in 1991 with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught at Audubon for one year.

Karen married David Monson on July 18, 1992 at Zion Lutheran. They made their home in Clear Lake where she was an associate teacher and substitute teacher. In 1995 Karen began teaching second grade full time at Lincoln Elementary. She received the Golden Apple Award in 1999. She will always be remembered for her laughter and enthusiasm for children and for her dedication to teaching.

Karen's greatest love was her husband and her children. She was very involved with all of their activities such as ice skating, dance, piano and Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She also enjoyed scrap booking and working out.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, John Brandt and George and Anna Sobek; mother-in-law, Grace Monson; and sister-in-law, Brenda Monson.

Karen is survived by her husband; children, Katie, Alec and Joey of Clear Lake; her mother and father of Klemme; sister, Jennifer (Jeffry) Juhl of Cedar Falls; brothers, Jonathan Sobek of Iowa City and Philip Sobek of Des Moines; father-in-law, Ronald (Mary Ellen) Monson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Julie, Hannah and Kevin Monson of Clear Lake and Bob Monson of Waukee; and grandmother, Antonia Brandt of Osage.

Dawn Swanson

October 28, 2003

Dawn Danette Swanson, 43, died at the hospital in Spencer, on Saturday, October 25, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 29, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, with Pastor Gary Nims officiating.

Casket bearers were Howard Bauer, Bret Bauer, Rod Swanson, Chris Swanson, Tim Swanson, Al Bailey and Larry Lee. Honorary casket bearers were Paul Botine, Mel Bierl, Lowell Luft, Ken Bauer, Bruce Bauer and Garth Bauer. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Dawn Danette, the daughter of Dallas and Sharon Luft Bauer, was born on January 6, 1960 in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Her childhood years were spent in various Iowa communities where she attended high school in Britt and Clear Lake. She graduated from the Clear Lake High School in 1978.

Dawn married Randy Swanson on July 25, 1981. They lived in Spencer where she worked at UPS for 14 years and was co-owner of Audio Video Connection with her husband. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Jinger Jo; grandparents, Peter and Fern Bauer and Howard and Lucille Luft.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Spencer James and Brady Dallas, all of Spencer; mother, Sharon Bauer of Coulter; father, Dallas Bauer of La Mesa, New Mexico; brothers, Howard (Julie) Bauer of Belmond and Bret (Kelley) Bauer of Sheffield; sisters, Retha (Dennis) Gould of Newcastle, Nebraska and Krista (Greg) Rogahn of Lubbock, Texas; and mother and father-in-law, Opal and Jim Swanson of Spencer.
