Dr. John R. Huey

John Robert Huey, 81, died on Sunday, April 6, at his home in Rio Verde, Arizona.
He was a retired orthopedic surgeon from Cedar Rapids.
He was born on August 7, 1921 in Rowan. He graduated from
the
Rowan High School and then University of Iowa in 1945. He served as a doctor
with the U.S. Army, serving with the Veterans Administration. In 1952, he
formed his orthopedic practice in Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; and four children.

Hubert "Hub" Colby
April 15, 2003
Hubert Ellsworth "Hub" Colby, 94, died on Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Belmond
Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 14, at the St. John Lutheran
Church in Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial was in
the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
Organist was Eldoris Bunnell and soloist was Susan
Toftey. Ushers were Henry Gerdes and Robert Wenzel. Casket bearers were
Byron Boyce, Tim Atkins, Jacob Werner, Connor Elmitt, Brad Elmitt, Jay
Prescott and Colby Elmitt.
Hub was born in Lake Mills on July 21, 1908, the son of
Dr. Joseph E. and Millie (Ethel) Colby. He graduated from the Lake Mills High
School and then attended Iowa State College.
He married Faye Arlene Ferris on July 7, 1930 at
Princeton, Missouri. Hub was a police officer at Joice for a time and was
employed as a state conservation officer for 12 years at the Ledges State Park
in Boone, in the Sheldon area, and later he served as a conservation officer
in Wright County.
Hub was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He served
stateside in Peoria, Illinois during World War II. Upon completion of his
service he was employed as a supervisor for General Mills in Belmond from
1949-1965. When Central Soya acquired the Belmond location, he and his wife
moved to Chicago where he continued with General Mills as a plant
entomologist from 1965 until his retirement in 1970. They then returned to
Iowa where they spent a short time in Lake Mills and then moved back to
Belmond.
Hub had a life long love of animals. He raised
pheasants. His children remember him bringing home wild skunks, badgers, a
wolf, and various other creatures when they were injured or abandoned, and
he nursed them back to health. He and his wife enjoyed their dogs. In
earlier years Hub enjoyed piloting small airplanes. He loved flowers and
vegetable gardening.
Hub and his wife were long time members of
the St. John
Lutheran Church in Belmond, and he was a member of the VFW. He became a
resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in November 2000 where his wife
also lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers;
and one sister.
Surviving are his wife; daughter, Harriet "Nubby"
(Richard) Woodin of Clarion; son, David (Kaye) of Silver Bay, Minnesota;
six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Beverly D. Quandt
April 24, 2003
Beverly Duane Quandt, 77, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at
the Belmond Medical
Center.
A private graveside memorial service and interment were
held on Monday, April 21, at the Meservey Cemetery, with Pastor Michael Druhl of the
Belmond United Methodist Church officiating.
Beverly, the son of Rudolph and Ethel Pabst Quandt, was
born on July 25, 1925, in Belmond, where he also attended school.
Bev was a laborer, placing new rails and ties for the
railroad at General Mills. He was also employed by Dr. S. P. Leinbach to do yard work.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers,
Rudy, Jr. and Lewis.
Beverly is survived by his sister, Ida Mae Schuster of
Norfolk, Virginia; and brother, Gordon (Ardis) Quandt of Mesa, Washington.

Donald Cleveland
April 20, 2003
Donald M. Cleveland, 66, of Belmond, died on Sunday, April 20, 2003, at the
Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, April 23,
at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl
officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Donald Max Cleveland, the son of James Arthur Cleveland
and Alice Marie Dunn, was born on June 19, 1936, at home on the family farm
near Liberty Center, Iowa. He grew up on the farm, graduating from the Liberty
Center High School in 1954 and attended Simpson College where he played
basketball and high-jumped, graduating in 1961. He went on to earn a Masters
Degree in Guidance Counseling from the Northeast Missouri State University and
his endorsement specialist in School Administration from Iowa State
University.
Don was united in marriage to Dona Griffiths on June
10, 1962, in Indianola. His first teaching job was at Franklin Consolidated
Schools (now called CAL) where he taught junior high science. The couple
moved to Belmond in 1965 where Don was employed by the Belmond Community
Schools. From 1965 to 1968 he taught junior high science. His coaching
duties included junior high wrestling and high school track and field. From
1968 to 1974 he was the high school guidance counselor. He started the girls
basketball program, serving as head coach. He was also the head boys
baseball coach, leading the team to the state baseball tournament. During
those summers he also ran the summer pee wee baseball leagues.
From 1974 to 1991, Don was the High School
Principal. He
implemented a staff improvement program, student assistance program, and was
facilitator for other communities. In 1990, he was elected outstanding
administrator for support of music education by the Iowa Music Educator
Association. He was a member of the State Music Association Board.
From 1991 to 1996, Don was Superintendent of the
Belmond Schools and was instrumental in the Belmond-Klemme reorganization.
In 1994 he was awarded the School Administrator Award from IHSAA. In 1996 he
was named Boss of the Year by the Belmond Jaycees. Common advice that Don
gave was, "set your goals, do the best you know how, don't be afraid to try,
and be happy doing what you are doing".
Don was a member of the United Methodist Church, where
he taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of various boards.
He was a member of the Belmond Chamber of Commerce, where he was a Past
President, the Belmond Hospital Foundation, and Belmond Public Library
Foundation. Don was also a member of the Belmond Volunteer Ambulance crew.
Don loved the outdoors. He took many youth groups,
friends and family to the Boundary Waters on canoe trips. He enjoyed fishing
and loved nature.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers,
James and Charles; and sisters, Norma and Sharon.
Don is survived by his wife; sons, Dan (Jodie) of
Wheaton, Illinois, Dave (Terra) of Cedar Falls and Dana (Laurie) of Des
Moines; grandchildren, Alex, Sean, Kellen, Conner, Langley and Maxwell; and
sisters, Phyllis (George) Gray of Waukee and Coleen Remick of Indianola.
The family requests memorials be directed to
the Belmond-Klemme
Scholarship Foundation II, Belmond Hospital Foundation, American Cancer
Society and the Belmond United Methodist Church.

Ruth G. Gray
April 24, 2003
Ruth G. Gray, died on Sunday, April 20, 2003, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in
Mason City.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 24, at the
Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Dennis Cahill and
Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St.
Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.,
on Wednesday, at
the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, with a Scriptural
Wake service at 6:00 p.m., followed with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m.
Ruth was born on September 4, 1918 in Belmond, to Jack and
Luella (Parker) Finn. She graduated from the Belmond High School. On
September 18, 1937, Ruth married Harold C. Gray in Belmond. A short time
later they moved to Mason City, where she spent the rest of her life.
Ruth was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. She
devoted her life to her family and enjoyed spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to be called great granny.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband
in 1988; and brothers, Leland and Donald Finn.
Ruth is survived by sons, Larry (Donna) Gray of Mason
City and Dennis Gray of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren, Terri (David)
Kuntz of Mason City, Tammy (Russ) Hansen of Cedar Falls, Kelli (Jim) Thorton
of Arlington, Texas, Thomas Gray of Austin, Texas and Stephi Gray of Ft.
Worth, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Cassie, Nicole, and Lindsey Kuntz,
Ryan and Tyler Hansen, and Paul, Chandler, and Alex Thorton.

Matthew Terrill

Matthew Aaron Terrill, 13, of Oak Harbor, Washington, died suddenly
on Monday, April
21, 2003, at his home.
A private graveside service was held on Friday, April 25, followed
by a public memorial service at Matthew's school.
Matthew was born on May 2, 1989 in Coupeville, Washington
and lived his entire live in Oak Harbor. He was in the 8th grade at the Oak
Harbor Middle School. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and soccer,
computer games, and science fiction and fantasy books. He was excited about
music and wanted to learn drums and guitar. He was in the process of writing
a book about D-Day. He had spoken about being a history teacher or computer
programmer.
He was preceded in death by two great-grandfathers,
Walter Boyd of Belmond and Lawrence Hays.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Rick and
Kelli Terrill; his mother and step-father, Maryanne Rassel and Marc Gilbert;
brothers, Joshua Terrill, Jacob Hummel and Kyle Gilbert; grandparents, David
and Peg Boyd Fosnaugh, Dan and Ruth Terrill, Rodolfo and Gloria Fontecha;
great-grandparents, Jim and Ruth Fosnaugh of Klemme, Beverly Boyd of
Belmond, Ruth Hays, and Harris and Marie Alford.

Zelda W. Baxter
May 6, 2003
Zelda Baxter, 81, died on Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Sacto, California, following a
long battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10, at the First
United Methodist Church in Sacto.
Zelda was born on August 22, 1921 in Goodell, the
daughter of Charles and Wini Conklin. She graduated from AIB in Des Moines
and moved to Denver, Colorado, where she met her husband of 57 years,
Richard. Zelda was an active member of many organizations, including the
Tuesday Club, PEO Chapter EI, and United Methodist Women. She retired in
1984 after 22 years as secretary in the math department at CSUS.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers,
Dale and Archie Conklin.
Survivors include her husband; children Jerry (Jan)
Baxter, Diane (Louie) Hoop and Darell (Debbie) Baxter; grandchildren, Tanya,
Jason, Kerry, Jenna and Jeremy.

Iliah Sorenson

Iliah Ione Sorenson, of Kanawha, died on Tuesday, April 29, 2003.
Funeral services were held on Friday,
May 2, at the Kanawha United Methodist Church, with burial in the Amsterdam
Township Cemetery, Kanawha.
Iliah was born on April 24, 1917 at Des Moines, the
daughter of James and Hazel Kale Maddick. She was raised in Kanawha.
She
married Fred Loeffler, in 1936. They had two sons. They farmed near Kanawha
and later Belmond. They owned Freddie's Cafe in Kanawha and Iliah worked at
Kessler Drug and Gordon's Greenhouse, both of Belmond. Fred died in 1952.
Iliah married Lewis Sorenson, in 1954. They had one
daughter. They farmed near Belmond and later Iliah and her daughter moved to
Kanawha.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Fred; sons, Ronald and Jackie; and sister, Vivian Wicks.
Survivors include her daughter, Pamela (James) Weiss of
Kanawha; sister, Vera (Clarence) Abbas of Kanawha; brothers-in-law, Herbert
Wicks of California, Karl (Phyllis) Loeffler of Florida, Paul Rogalla of
Belmond and Don (Mary) Thompson of Belmond; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Zeiger of Belmond.

Kenneth VerHelst

Kenneth L. VerHelst, 75, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at
the Mercy Medical
Center in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, at the Kanawha Christian
Reformed Church, with interment in the Belmond Cemetery.
Kenneth Leroy, was born on December 12, 1927 at Mason City,
to Mell and Iva Mae (Hill) VerHelst. He graduated from the Swaledale High
School.
In 1949 he married Maurine Barkema. The couple farmed
near Meservey and later in the Kanawha area for 30 years, retiring and
moving to Belmond in 1996.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; two
sisters; and six brothers.
He is survived by his wife; children, Sheryl (Ron) Ungerer of Xenia, Ohio, Lynn (Verlyn) Andrews of Alexander and Craig (Judy) VerHelst of Colorado Springs.
