Ruth Dahl

Ruth Bergstrom Dahl, 81, died on Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Kanawha Community Home.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 5, at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, with interment in
the
Amsterdam Township Cemetery.
Ruth Elizabeth, the daughter of Theodore and Martha Holmgren Bergstrom, was born
on February 28, 1922 at Gowrie. She married
William Dahl in 1942 at Manson. Later they moved to Kanawha, where they
farmed for many years before retiring into town. She entered the care center
in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raymond and Dale; and
sister, Alyce Quade.
Survivors include her husband; son, Stephen (Dianne)
Dahl of Missouri; and sisters, Esther (Harold) Miller of Manson and
Charlotte (Dallas) Scharff of Nevada.

Anthony Berns
June 11, 2003
Anthony Steffen Berns, 18, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, as a result of a car
accident north of Rowan.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 6, 2003, at the Belmond-Klemme
High School gym, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond
Cemetery. Ushers were David Hess, Brian Kapka, Travis Kline,
Justin Trees, Alyssa Pals, Clint Wilkinson, Kyle Wilkinson, Shawna
McLaughlin, Travis Roberts and Reece Boller.
Honorary casket bearers were the Senior Class of 2003,
athletic team members and his friends. Casket bearers were Terry Wesenberg, Matt Hagen, Lucas
Frohling, Christopher Roberts, Loren Robbins, Reagan Swisher, Lucas Winfrey,
Kara Erickson and Nicole Mewes.
Anthony, the son of Bob and Connie (Steffens) Berns,
was born on May 3, 1985 at Clarion. He lived his entire life in Belmond and
graduated from the Belmond-Klemme High School, in May 2003. He worked during the
summer with his dad at the golf course.
Anthony was very active in sports and participated in
basketball, baseball, golf and football all four years in high school. He
was always a team player and never searched for the spotlight. He played for
the love of the game. He loved the Belmond Baseball League (BBL), and as he
grew older, he continued to coach. He was happiest when he was with Whitney
and his friends and was rarely seen by himself.
Anthony was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rex
Steffens and great-grandparents, Gerald and Marie Berns.
Survivors include his parents, Bob and Connie Berns of
Belmond; brother, Terry (LeNay) Wesenberg of Florida and their children,
Brooke and Kylie; grandparents, Loretta Steffens of Fallon, Nevada and Bob
and Fran Berns of Belle Plaine; aunts and uncles, Phyllis (John) Serpa of
Fallon, Brian (Kim) Berns of Jefferson and Lisa (Bob) Vileta of Marengo;
and soul mate, Whitney Allen of Belmond.

Ransom Allen

Ransom L. Allen, 85, died on Thursday, June 5, 2003, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 9, at the William Funeral Home in Clarion, with interment
at Evergreen Cemetery.
Ransom was born on March 5, 1918 near Clarion, the son of
Ira and Hazel McOullugh Allen. He attended country school south of Clarion.
He married Evelyn Jensen in 1941 in Ft. Dodge. They lived in the Clarion,
Humboldt and Kanawha areas and retired to Clarion in 1981. He moved to the
Concord Care Center in Garner in January 2003 and then to Britt in late May.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Ray;
and sisters, Evelyn Soren, Myrtle Hawkins and Leona Barnes.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Beverly (Duaine)
Nelson of Britt, Donna (Mike) Abels of Kanawha and Maxine (Mike) Kalkwarf of
Garner; sons, Ronald (Sharon) Allen of Wisconsin, Roger (Judy) Allen of
Britt, Keith (Kelly) Allen of Belmond and Mark (Jill) Allen of Belmond;
brothers, Manson, Leo and Merle of Eagle Grove; and sisters, Esther Johnson
of Ft. Dodge and Florence Staelens of Illinois.

Edwin Bruner
June 26, 2003
Edwin Bruner, 81, formerly a teacher at the Belmond High School, recently
died at the Tampa Bay Hospital, Florida. There will be no church services and
his body will be cremated with ashes distributed at Tampa Bay.
Bruner and Ernie Doeringsfeld visited Belmond in 2002
for a class reunion. They stayed at the Klemme House Bed and Breakfast while
in Belmond and Bruner said it was the same room that he rented from Lucy
Klemme when she owned the house and while he was teaching history and driver
education from 1949 to 1957.
Memorials may be given to the Belmond-Klemme
Scholarship Foundation II.

Irene Markham

Irene Markham, 84, formerly of the Belmond area, died on Friday, June 20, 2003,
at the Perry Lutheran Home.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 24, in Boone. The body was
cremated and burial will be at a later date.
Irene was born in Alexander on November 28, 1918, the
daughter of Cornelius and Johanna (Sporee) Johnson. She attended school in
Alexander.
On August 31, 1938, she married Harry T. Markham. They
farmed in the Alexander and Belmond areas, later moving to Boxholm, then
Davenport, Boone and Ogden.
She married Dewey Day after her first husband died.
They divorced in 1986.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
son Ronnie; and brothers, John and Virgil Johnson.
She is survived by son Gary (Nancy) Markham of
Atkinson, Illinois; daughters, Karlene Krause of Boone and Pauline (John)
Fisher of Pilot Mound; sisters, Verna (Louis) Kramer of Dassel, Minnesota
and Jennie Isaacson of Clarion; and brothers, Merlin (Donna) Johnson of
Meservey and Roman (Wilma) Johnson of Alexander.

Lirlene Bamford

Lirlene Ione Bamford, 85, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Belmond
Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 28, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with
Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by Carol Severson. Ushers were Al Charlson and Glenn Meints.
Casket bearers were Jeffrey Crawford, Matthew
Crawford, Marc Crawford, Scott Heilmann, Jonathan Heilmann, Ann Crawford,
Katherine Heilmann, Leslie Bamford, Inga Bamford and Siobhan Bamford.
Lirlene was born near Jewell on May 29, 1918, to
Norwegian immigrant parents Ivar and Ingeborg (Hanson) Oppedal. The family
moved to a farm near Alexander and after Ingeborg's death in 1924, took up
residence near Belmond.
On March 21, 1942, she married Loren A. Bamford. They
farmed and raised their family north of Belmond, residing there until moving
into town in 1999.
Lirlene was a graduate of the Belmond High School and a
member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved her Iowa farm roots and took
great pride in her Norwegian heritage, making three visits to Norway during
her lifetime.
Lirlene was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband; daughters, Janice
Crawford of Belmond and Merry (Steve) Heilmann of Afton, Minnesota; son,
Paul of Chelsea, Michigan; her Brazilian "son" Paulo (Maria) Canineu and
family; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Michelle) Crawford, Marc (Carolyn) Crawford,
Matthew (Brandy) Crawford, Ann Crawford and her friend Jason Campbell,
Jonathan Heilmann and fiancée, Kim Cote, Scott and Katherine Heilmann, Leslie,
Inga and Siobhan Bamford; and great-granddaughters, Madison and Abbigail
Crawford.

Taus Harms, Sr.
July 9, 2003
Taus Harms, Sr., 90, died on Sunday, June 29, 2003, due to complications resulting
from a stroke that he had suffered on Father's Day.
Funeral services were
held on Wednesday, July 2, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, with Pastor Lowell
Halvorson officiating.
Music was provided by Gwendolyn Gochenouer, organist
and
Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Casket bearers were Bennie Harms, Ron Harms,
Jeremy Harms, Larry Harms, Gary Harms, Sr. and Gary Harms, Jr. Interment
was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Taus Harms, Sr., son of Stenus and Grace (Folkerds)
Harms, was born on August 3, 1912 in rural Franklin County. He married Cecelia Heginger on Febraury 3, 1934. To this union were born 12 children.
Taus farmed in the Thornton, Klemme, Chapin, Belmond
and surrounding areas until he moved to the Belmond Community Apartments in
1997 and then later in 1997 to the Belmond Health Care Center.
Taus enjoyed playing cards and dice, visiting with
family and friends.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Cecelia, of 48
years, who died on January 25, 1982; two infant babies; one grandson; one
great-grandson; and 14 brothers and sisters.
The ten surviving children are Bennie (Jean) Harms of
Mason City, Taus Harms, Jr. of Belmond, Larry (Maxine) Harms of Sanborn,
Harry (Barbara) Harms of Hampton, Darlene (Dexter) Ewers of Mason City,
Arlene Wiemann of Nora Springs, Donald (Georgia) Harms of Hampton, Ronald
(Nancy) Harms of Belmond, Jerry (Marlene) Harms of Rockledge, Florida and Gary
(Barbara) Harms of Rockledge, Florida; one brother, Herman Harms of Forest
City; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;
and
many nieces and nephews.

Clara J. Bier

Clara J. Bier, 85, of Klemme, died on Monday, June 30, 2003,
at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 3, at the
Evangelical Free Church in Britt, with interment in the Ell Township Cemetery
near Klemme. The Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home of Belmond was in charge of
the arrangements.
Clara was born on February 21, 1918, the daughter of Owen
L. and Blanche (Montgomery) Nuehring, near Klemme.
On March 14, 1939, Clara was united in marriage to
Warren Bier. They farmed near Goodell for 35 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Warren; granddaughter, Twyla Rae; two brothers, Lyle and Laurel; and two
sisters, Grace Kemp and Betty Van Nurden.
Survivors are a daughter, Fonda (Carrol) Heifner of
Klemme; three grandsons, Galen of Wausau, Wisconsin, Calvin (Leslie) of
Belmond and Lowell of Garner; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Brede
of Klemme, Mavis Eckes of Long Prairie, Minnesota, Marie VerHelst of Klemme
and
Inez (Bruce) Dunbar of Mason City; brothers, Morris (Margaret) Nuehring of
Kanawha, Dean (Elsie) Nuehring of Osage, Ralph Nuehring of Klemme and Keith
(Wilma) Nuehring of Webster City.
