Margaret Buseman

December 9, 2003

Margaret F. Buseman, 84, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 6, at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond, with Pastor Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Margaret Fay, the daughter of Nels Jorgensen and Hazel Robinson Toft, was born in Bennett, Colorado on February 2, 1919. She attended local schools and grew up in Colorado.

On July 23, 1938, she married Melvin Buseman at the Immanuel Evangelical Reformed Church in Klemme. After living for a short time in Colorado, the couple made their home in the Klemme, Alexander, Goodell and Belmond areas.

Margaret took care of numerous jobs around the farm, including chickens, gardening, canning and baking. She cooked and baked everything from scratch. She sewed all of her daughters clothing. Margaret also crocheted, did hardanger, and made quilts from her own designs.

Margaret was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Reformed Church in Klemme and the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson; two sisters; and one brother.

Margaret is survived by daughters, Marcia (Richard) McMurray of Belmond, Gwendolyn (Tom) Harvey of Waukee and Ione (Mike) Wilson of Adel; grandchildren, Brad (Julie) Berneman of Belmond, Shawn (Raquel) Berneman of Mason City, Gina (Craig) Radechel of Clarion, Mike (Pam) Wilson of Johnston, Traci (Roger) Miller of Adel and Mark (Megan) Anderson of Des Moines; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Field of Colorado Springs and Hazel Harvey of Mesa, Arizona; and brothers, Fritz (Allyne) Toft of Mesa and Herb Toft of Blackforest, Colorado.

Fann Katuin

December 9, 2003

Fann E. Katuin, 94, of Belmond, died on Friday, December 5, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 8, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha.

Fann, the daughter of John and Jennie Abbas Baker, was born on October 10, 1909, south of Kanawha in Wright County. She grew up in the Twin Lakes area where she attended country school.

On February 15, 1928, Fann married Harm Katuin. The couple farmed in various locations in north central Iowa. In 1955 the family moved to the farm near Goodell, where they farmed until Harm's death in 1973. Fann continued to live on the farm until she became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in 1997.

Fann was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed caring for her flower garden and took great pride in her flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters; and four brothers.

Fann is survived by her sons, Ben (Sherley) Katuin of Goodell and Marvin (Maryls) Katuin of Mason City; grandchildren, Mark (Sharon) Katuin of Garner, Susan (David) Swaroff of Dayton and Margaret (Curt) Klaahsen of Cherokee; great-grandchildren, Lucas, Megan and Alexander; sisters, Helen Smidt of Britt and Emma (John) Appelhons of Thompson; and brother, Albert (Jeanette) Baker of Forest City.

Marie Packard

December 9, 2003

Amber Marie Packard, 84, of Belmond, died on Sunday, December 7, 2003, at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 10, at 11:00 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Amber Marie Mitchell (Petersen) Packard, was born on December 14, 1918, to Jesse and Evaline (Johnson) Mitchell at Boicourt, Kansas. At the age of five, Marie's father was accidentally killed in his duty as a volunteer fireman in Burlington, Kansas. Marie's maternal grandparents played a large roll in her upbringing until her mother married L. T. Petersen when Marie was 13. This union gave Marie two step siblings, Wilbur Petersen and Margaret "Chic" Ransom.

Marie was baptized at the age of 13. She was active in band, glee club and drama and graduated from the Denison, Iowa High School in 1936.

Marie moved to Belmond after graduation to work for her aunt at Petersen's Café. She married R.G. "Bud" Packard in a double ceremony with Fred and Phyllis Pals in November of 1937. After her marriage, she joined the Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Pearle Circle. She was a past member of the Culture Study Club, Belmond Golf Course and Clarmond Country Club. 

Marie enjoyed homemaking, decorating, trail riding on her horse, needlepoint, crocheting afghans, oil painting, piano, bridge, golf, fishing and when inspired, writing poetry.  Marie was honored to have two showings of her paintings at the Jenison Mecham Memorial Art Center. One of her poems was published in The International Library of Poetry and is in the Talbot Belmond Public Library.

Marie always said she had a wonderful life and enjoyed traveling to northern Minnesota to fish, to southern Minnesota on the Mississippi River at Winona and to Bull Shoals River near Branson, Missouri, where they built a home and wintered for 12 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son; mother, father and step-father; half sister, Ruby Lois Webb; step-brother, Wilbur Petersen; and half-sister, Donna Sprague. 

Marie is survived by her daughters, Barbara A. Johnson and Julie E. Packard-Knutson of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Erin Johnson of Chicago, Ned Johnson of Fort Dodge and Packard and James Knutson of Ankeny; half-sister, Mabel Mattes; half-brother, Chris Petersen; step-sister, Margaret Ransom; and sisters, Phyllis Pals, Norma Jeanne (Leland Jenison) and Leila (Arvild) Jacobson.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church.

James Crimmings

December 9, 2003

James Crimmings, 90, of Cedar Falls, died on Sunday, December 7, 2003, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 10, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

James was born on October 2, 1913 in Grafton, the son of James and Bertha Molsberry Crimmings. He attended Luther College and graduated from Buena Vista College. He was a teacher and coach for many years in Belmond, Carroll, Mason City, Rockford, Osage, Glidden and in Colorado, retiring in 1980. He was a professional ball player in the 1930s and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors are his wife, Bernece Rita; sons, Timothy of Mason City and James Michael (Aida) of California; and two daughters, Dian (George) Galloway of Virginia and Jody Fitzgerald of Waterloo.

Dennis Wilson

December 16, 2003

Dennis K. Wilson, 65, of Belmond, died on Monday, December 8, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 13, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.

Dennis, the son of William K. and Ella S. Olson Wilson, was born on January 18, 1938, in Twin Lakes Township. He attended school in the Kanawha area.

He worked for farmers in the Kanawha area and in construction until he became disabled in the'70s. The past ten years Dennis made his home in Belmond.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

He is survived by a brother, Robert W. Wilson of Des Moines; and a sister, Patricia Cook of Mankato.

Paul Christensen

December 16, 2003

Paul Andrew Christensen, 38, son of Paul and Alice Christensen of Belmond, died on Monday, December 8, 2003, at his home in Brentwood, Maryland. Funeral services will be held later at the Methodist Church in Belmond.

Clair C. Hill

December 22, 2003

Clair C. Hill, 94, of Dows,  died on Saturday, December 13, 2003, at the Franklin General Nursing facility in Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 19, at 10:30 a.m., at the Dows United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery west of Rowan. Visitation was held from 4-6:00 p.m., on Thursday at the Dows Community Funeral Home.

Music was provided by Marillyn Korth, organist and Anna Mae Avery, soloist. Ushers were Edwin Dow and Bob Hess. Casket bearers were John Snyder, Maynard Meyer, Alan Buseman, Dave Oelmann, John Coombs and John Dickerson. Honorary bearers were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Clair, the son of Clarence and Mildred (Bates) Hill, was born on October 24, 1909, on the family farm five miles northwest of Dows. On March 25, 1936, he married Fern L. Carr of Alexander at the Methodist Parsonage in Rowan.

He was a member of the Rowan Methodist Church, where he served many years in various positions. After moving to Dows in 1974, he transferred his membership to the Dows United Methodist Church. Clair enjoyed his farm life. He was proud of all aspects of farming, including the grains he raised and his livestock. Up through the fall of 2002, at the age of 93, he still did most of the spring and fall tilling.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Lawrence, Laurel and Aubrey; sisters, Edith Fitz, Veva White and Mildred Pepper; daughter-in-law, Delores Hill; and great-granddaughter, McKenzie Gerlach.

Survivors include his children, Cecil (Mary) Hill of Clear Lake, Darwin (Marilyn) Hill of Latimer, Leola Erickson of Lincoln, Nebraska and Marilyn (Gary) Carlson of Spencer; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, LaVonne Morris of Albert Lea and Evelyn Boyington of State Center; and brother, Arthur of Iowa Falls.

Rosemary Snider

December 16, 2003

Rosemary Snider, 72, of Hampton, died on Monday, December 15, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital. Funeral services were be held on Thursday, December 18.

Rosemary, the daughter of Randolph and Maude Lumley Zeiger, was born on May 15, 1931 in Hampton. She attended school in Swaledale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivol Wayne; her parents; and brother, Doug.

Survivors include her son, Kirk (Liz) Mathews of Hampton; and daughters, Karmen McPherren of Clear Lake and Jolene (Larry) Huinker of West Union.

Ralph Anderson

December 22, 2003

Ralph E. Anderson, 78, died on Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at his home in Goodell. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 20, at the Goodell United Methodist Church, with burial in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.

Ralph, was born on July 1, 1925 in Peotone, Illinois. He served in the Navy during WW II aboard the USS Langley. On June 12, 1945, he married Mildred Winterfeld. Ralph farmed near Goodell until his retirement in 1976.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother.

Survivors include his wife; children, Vernon Anderson and Pam (Dennis) Trausch; and brothers, Lester (Dedee) Anderson, Delbert (Helen) Anderson and Donald (Ione) Anderson.

LaDonna Viet

December 29, 2003

LaDonna Jean Viet, 69, of Hampton, died on Monday, December 22, 2003, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 27, in Hampton and burial was in the Dumont Cemetery.

She was born on August 30, 1934 in Franklin County. She married Galen Viet in 1952 and they lived in Hampton.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Dennis (Linda) and Randy (Holly) of Hampton; and daughters, Kristie (Jeff) Meints of Sheffield and Debra (Tony) Plagge of Hampton.

Gary Dean Lund

December 29, 2003

Gary Dean Lund, 65, died on Tuesday, December 23, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Friday December 26, at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, with Pastor Gary Boen officiating. Music was provided by David Ackerman, organist and Fred and Marie Nesheim, a duet.

Honorary bearers were Larry E. Olson, Harlan Askelsen, Jim Larrick, Mark Lester, Harlan Poolman, Roger Iverson, Tom Terrall and Larry Taylor. Casket bearers were Mike Marshall, Bob Murphy, Kevin Marshall, Chad Disney, Jake Johnson and Mark Disney. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Gary, son of Peter T. and Esther (Rhiner) Lund, was born on December 5, 1938 in Renwick. He was baptized at Ullensvang in Thor and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion. Gary attended Grant #9 Country School and graduated from the Clarion High School in 1956. In 1961, he joined the National Guard 133rd Tac Con Flt in Ft. Dodge until 1967.

On May 31, 1964, he was united in marriage to Caroline Nesheim at the Lake Lutheran Church near Renwick. To this union two sons were born.

Gary farmed for 39 years and trucked for several businesses in the area. He was a Grant Township Trustee, treasurer of the rural fire association, a Trustee and Chairman of the Lake Cornelia Sanitary District Board, a member of the Wright County Board of Adjustment, a Past Chairman of the Wright County Extension Council and on the North Central Farm Service Board.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Michael James of Clarion and Matthew Dean (Michele) of Clarion; twin granddaughters, Megan and Sarah; sister, Susan (Steve) Duffee; and nephews, Dan (Janelle) Duffee and Eric (Nori) Duffee.

Benjamin Perry

December 29, 2003

Benjamin Joseph Perry, 22, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 27, at the Alexander United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Music was provided by Carol Richards, organist. Casket bearers were Craig Hill, Chris Perry, Tom Connell, Art Perry, John Messick and Steve Perry. Ushers were Marvin Draper and Dallas Shear. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Ben, the son of Duane and Debra Perry, was born on January 4, 1981, at the Belmond Hospital. He grew up in Belmond and graduated from the Belmond-Klemme High School in 1999.

Ben cooked at the Eaton Cafeteria and at Baumer's Grill while in school. After graduation, he worked for Eaton in Belmond and was currently employed by EDS in Clarion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with friends. Ben was a member of the Boy Scouts.

Ben is survived by his parents; sister, Emily and her fiancée, Rob Lamfers Hill of Belmond; maternal grandparents, W. Harry and Doris Hill of Alexander; paternal grandparents, Vernon and Elaine Perry of Waucoma; aunts and uncles, Craig and Deb Hill of Alexander, Suzanne and John Messick of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Carla Roberts of Garner, Janeen and Tom Connell of Cedar Falls, Kathy Parker of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, Chris and Donna Perry of Mason City and Art and Beth Perry of Waucoma.

Beverly Nath

December 29, 2003

Beverly J. Nath, 55, of Waco, Texas, formerly of Belmond, died on Thursday, December 25, 2003, at the Providence Hospital in Waco, Texas.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 30, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral home in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Madison Township Cemetery near Forest City.

Beverly, the daughter of Jack and Audrey (Chase) Crosby, was born on May 14, 1948 in Garner. She was raised in north central Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Bernard Nath and to this union three children were born. Beverly lived in north central Iowa until moving to Texas.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and brothers, Bill and Jack.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindy (Ronnie) Rowell of Nacogdoches, Texas; sons, Chris (Judy) of Grand Prairie, Texas and Tony (Lisa) of Brandon Suffolk, England; sisters, Barb (Wayne) Arthur of Alexander, Bobbi (Bruce) Husske of Garner and Kathy (Dean) Kinseth of Joice; and brother, Jim Crosby of Waco.

Pamela Knutson

January 7, 2004

Pamela Knutson, 56, of Longmont, Colorado, formerly of Belmond, died on Saturday, December 27, 2003, at her home.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 30, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Longmont, with interment in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Columbarium.

Pamela, was born on January 11, 1947 in Bricelyn, Minnesota. She graduated from the Bricelyn High School and married Gary Knutson on December 26, 1965.

She was a nurse's aid at the Ivy Stockwell Elementary School in Berthoud, Colorado, was involved with the Berthoud Booster Club, the Berthoud youth football and was a cheerleader sponsor. She enjoyed sports. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Pamela and Gary lived in Belmond from April 1972 to October 1977. Gary had a barbershop on Main Street during that time.

Preceding her in death were her mother, Audrey Alice (Harner) Johnson; father, Elwood M. Johnson; and brother, Harn Johnson.

Survivors are her husband of Longmont; sons, Jay (Stacy) Knutson of Loveland and Lee Knutson and his fiancée, Lesa of Longmont; daughters, Molly (Jeremy) Kennis of Windsor; two sisters; and two grandchildren.

Harvey Pals

January 7, 2004

Harvey Pals, 82, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at the Hampton Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 3, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Harvey, was born on February 18, 1921, on the family farm in Franklin County, the son of Hilko and Tillie (Blau) Pals. He attended country school through the 7th grade, after which he farmed and worked odd jobs in the area.

In 1940, he married his first wife, Maxine Swenson. They had one daughter, Iva Jeanne. Harvey joined the Army in 1941 and was soon discharged due to health complications. Once out of the Army, he farmed in the Wright and Franklin County areas until his divorce from Maxine in 1965.

Harvey continued to farm in the area until he married Fonda Martin in 1967. He was employed by the Wright County Conservation until he retired in 1983.

Harvey loved going to auctions, finding great antiques, and talking to people about the treasures they may have in their homes. He was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey.

When his health began to fail, he was placed in the Belmond hospital, Sheffield Care Center and finally in the Alzheimer's Unit at the Hampton Health Care Center, where he had been for the last four years.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; three sisters; and an infant daughter.

Survivors include his wife, Fonda of Belmond; daughter, Iva Jeanne (Erwin) Hill of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Dennis (Chrissy) Hill of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, Kenneth (Michelle) Hill of Cedar Rapids and Rodney (Teri) Hill of Denver, Colorado; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Viola Barkema of Belmond and Iona Yost of Las Vegas, Nevada; and brothers, Leslie Pals of Mason City and Louie Pals of Marshalltown.
