Faye Arlene Colby
July 15, 2003
Faye Arlene Colby, 91, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care
Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 5, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond,
with Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson officiating. Burial was in the Linwood Cemetery in
Boone. The Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist and
Susan Toftey, soloist. Ushers were Robert Wenzel and Bob Kalkwarf. Casket
bearers were Byron Boyce, Gary Werner, Connor Elmitt, Brad Elmitt, Jay
Prescott and Colby Elmitt.
Faye was born on October 15, 1911 at Welcome, Minnesota,
the daughter of Herbert and Georgia (Hudson) Ferris. The family moved to
Iowa and Faye attended schools in Joice and Lake Mills, and then Iowa State
Teacher's College (UNI) and Drake University.
Faye and Hubert Ellsworth "Hub" Colby, were married on
July 7, 1930 at Princeton, Missouri. She taught rural schools at Goodell,
CAL, and parochial school in Geneva, Illinois, from 1965-70 when she
retired. Faye was the Librarian at the Belmond Public Library for 10 years.
Faye received great joy in caring for her family. She
especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. She was active in the St. John Lutheran Church. She loved
animals. Favorite past-times were sewing, quilting, knitting sweaters and
other keepsakes. She liked to play bridge and the organ.
Faye and Hub lived in Joice, Boone, Belmond, Chicago
and Lake Mills, before retiring to Belmond in 1972. She became a resident of
the Belmond Health Care Center in October of 2000.
Faye was preceded in death by her parents; husband
in April 2003; and sister, Velma Paulson.
Survivors are her daughter, Harriet "Nubby" (Richard)
Woodin of Clarion; son, David (Kay) Colby of Silver Bay, Minnesota; six
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Mehus
July 9, 2003
Evelyn M. Mehus, 81, of Eldora, died on Monday, July 7, at
the Methodist Hospital in Des
Moines, of breast cancer.
The body was cremated and a graveside service will
be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 12, at the Eldora Cemetery. Following the service,
the family will greet friends at the Wildlife Club, rural
Eldora.
Evelyn loved working in her garden. She and her
husband, Joseph once farmed near Klemme.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and daughter,
Carla.
She is survived by her daughters, Adela Niedermann of
Ankeny and Lavon Pfeifler of Des Moines; son, Neal Mehus of Radcliffe;
brothers, Lloyd Pringnitz of Clear Lake and Stanley Pringnitz of Osage;
eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Merlin Bier
July 15, 2003
Merlin Lloyd Bier, 80, of Alexander, died of cancer, on
Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Franklin
General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 11, at the First
Reformed Church in Alexander, with Rev. Philip Arnold officiating. Burial will
be at a later date in the Alexander Cemetery.
Merlin was born on April 25, 1923 in Franklin County, the
son of Arthur and Ruth Halfpop Bier. He graduated from the Meservey High School
in 1940.
He married Arlene Schulte on January 23, 1944, at the
First Reformed Church in Alexander.
Merlin was a farmer, electrician, mechanic, tiler,
plumber, carpenter, landscaper, welder and machinist. He was a member of the
First Reformed Church, the Masons, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, the Blacksmith and
Welders Assoc. and the BPOE. He served on the school board and coached
little league. He enjoyed softball, bowling, golf and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Susan Bier of
Williamsburg and Jerilyn (Delos) Hansen of Bettendorf; sons, David of Des
Moines and Loren (D. J.) of Alexander; granddaughters, Kristen, Katie,
Courtney, Pam and Sarah; and sister, Frances Dorenkamp of Iowa City.

Voral Basener
July 15, 2003
Voral Basener, 83, of Clarion, died on Thursday, July 10, 2003, at her home.
Funeral services were
held on Monday, July 14, at the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion, with Pastors
Candace Adams and Janet Wearda officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam
Cemetery near Goodell.
Music was provided by Mary Kallem, organist.
Casket bearers were, SSgt. Greg Hansen, Derek Hanna, Tom Dailey, Kevin
Hadley, Al Durbin, Doug Adams and Ferd Lemke.
Voral, the daughter of Elmer and Alma McNutt
Kienenberger, was born on October 18, 1919 near Goodell. She grew up in that
area and graduated from the Goodell High School in 1937.
Voral married Francis Finn in October 1937. They lived
in Goodell, and he died in 1944. She married Vern Schluter in February 1946
and they lived in Meservey. They had five daughters. In 1961 Vern and Voral
moved to Goodell and in 1985 they moved to the Belmond Apartments. Vern died
in April 1997. Voral married Herbert Basener in July 1998 and they lived in
Belmond until 2001, when they moved to Clarion.
Voral was a member of the Goodell United Methodist
Church, where she played the piano and led Bible Studies and the youth
fellowship. In Clarion she was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was
a 4-H Leader and enjoyed crochet, latch work and using a computer.
Voral was preceded in death by her parents; husbands,
Francis and Vern; and twin daughters, Sharon and Sheila.
Survivors include her husband, Herb; daughters, Sheryl
(Dan) Hanna of Colorado Springs, Sandy (Glenn) Hansen of Rowan and Sueanne
(Gary) French of Ackley; grandchildren, Kelli and her husband, Jim, Derek,
Kerri, Greg, Jennifer, Lindsay, and Ashley; and great-grandchildren, Haley,
Jimmie, Brandon and Paityn.
Other children, Evelyn (Tom) Daily of Greene, Velma
(Al) Durbin of Lohman, Missouri, Nancy (Martin) Kroeze of Sedalia, Missouri,
Lawrence (Wanda) Basener of Belmond, David (Donna) Basener of Meservey; ten
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

E. J. "Mort" Morton
July 15, 2003
E. J. "Mort" Morton, of Coulter, died on Thursday, July 10, 2003, at the Hampton Care
Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 14, at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter.
Edward Jr. was born on July 2, 1928 near Coulter, the son
of Myrtle and Ed Morton. When he was a small child the family moved to
Belmond. Later they returned to Coulter, where Mort graduated from the Franklin
Consolidated School.
On April 19, 1947, he married E. Jeane Campbell. They
had eight children. In 1958, he founded Mort's Pump and Plumbing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lance;
and brother, Dallas.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Priscilla (Joel)
Eddy of Latimer; sons, Kent (Chris) Morton of Latimer, Robert (Jan) Morton
of Iowa Falls, Reginald (Jane) Morton of Hampton, Seth Morton of Coulter,
Jason (Teresa) Morton of Iowa Falls and Tracy Morton and Norma Allen of
Coulter; daughter-in-law, Jerri Morton of California; brother, Sanford
Morton of Coulter; and sisters, Peggy (Mac) Guldberg of Coulter, Dixie
(David) Jurgens of Marion, Marlene (Herb) Wheeler of Hubbard and Amelia
Tate of Illinois.

Laura Guthrie
July 29, 2003
Laura Elizabeth Guthrie, 94, died on Thursday, July 10, 2003, in Kearney, Missouri,
where she had lived since 1984.
Laura was born on August 16, 1908 in Dows, the daughter of
William Thomas and Maggie Watt Bashford. She graduated from the Webster City
High School and married William Guthrie in 1928.
From 1928-1942, she was the leading lady for the Guthrie
Players tent show. In 1942, they purchased the theater in Dows. It closed in
1955 and they opened a ladies' ready-to-wear store in Belmond. She sold that
business in 1966 and moved to Webster City.
She was preceded in death by her husband
in 1964; and
brothers, James, Joseph (Mack), William, Eugene, LaVerne and Francis
Bashford.
Survivors include her daughter, Darlene Denger of Kearney;
and sister, Naomi Raven of Michigan.

Fred Brinkley
July 15, 2003
Fred Allen Brinkley, 59, of Belmond, died on Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Belmond Care
Center.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 15, at the Dayspring Assembly of God Church in
Belmond, with Pastor Mark Pluff officiating. Interment was in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Fred was born on February 15, 1944 in Jacksonville,
Florida, the son of Calvin and Carley Woody (Brown) Brinkley. He served for
a time in the U.S. Navy and worked at various jobs around the country, most
recently for Disney in Orlando. He married Melissa Tabor in Florida in 1989.
They moved to Belmond in 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister.
Survivors include his wife of Belmond; four daughters
and two sons (living in the southeastern U.S.); brother-in-law, John (Liz)
Tabor of Belmond; nephews, Mitch (Nicole) Tabor and Josh Tabor of Dows;
niece, Sarah Tabor of Garner; and many other relatives.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be
made in Fred's name and mailed to Dayspring Assembly of God.

William Walrod
July 15, 2003
William J. Walrod, 80, of Belmond, died on Saturday, July 12, 2003, at
the Mercy
Medical Center in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, July 16, at
the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating.
The Belmond Honor Guard will provide military rites at the church following
the funeral. The body will be cremated and a private interment will be held
later in the Belmond Cemetery.
William (Junior) Walrod, was born on December 5, 1922 in
Belmond, the son of William Owen and Jeanette Isabelle (Michelson) Walrod.
He grew up in Belmond and graduated from the Belmond High School in 1940.
Bill joined the Navy in 1942 and served with the 6th
Seabee Construction Battalion as an Electricians Mate. He saw much combat in
the South Pacific and was discharged in 1945. He was proud of his service
and that five of his brothers were also veterans. Bill married (Doris) Jean
Ryan of Rowan/Dows on January 15, 1947. The couple had three children.
Bill worked for Central Telephone as a lineman until
1953. Then he worked for Elliott Hardware as an appliance salesman and
repairman. In 1963 he was appointed Postmaster in Belmond and retired in
1985.
In retirement he enjoyed trips that he and Jean took,
the most recent last May. They often traveled to visit their daughter, Veloice and her family. Bill went on many goose and pheasant hunting trips
with son, Todd, brother, Dale and nephew, Tim and enjoyed spring turkey
hunting in Northeast Iowa.
Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church, where
he served on the administrative council, trustees, and finance committee. He
was a member of the Belmond V.F.W. Post 4244.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight-year-old
son, Ricky; brothers, Clayton, Charles, Gerald and Lawrence; and sisters,
Helen Busick, Lois Hansen and June Hansen.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Veloice (Peter)
Huck of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; son, Todd (Ann) Walrod of Forest City;
grandchildren, Megan, Emily and Kayla Huck and Trent and Jane Walrod;
brothers, Douglas and Dale (Nadine) Walrod; and sisters-in-law, Anita and
Dorothy Walrod.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be
given to the Belmond United Methodist Church, the Belmond Volunteer
Ambulance Service and the Belmond-Klemme School's Outdoor Classroom
project.

Arlene Greenwood
July 15, 2003
Arlene Greenwood, 77, of Belmond, died on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the Belmond
Care Center, following a battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday,
July 17, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating.
Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8:00 p.m., at
the
Dugger Ewing Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the services.
Arlene, the daughter of Milford Jennings and Gladys
Annette (Soma) Mehl, was born on October 15, 1925 near Kanawha. She attended
country school near Kanawha and later in Belmond, where she graduated from
high school in 1943. She was the oldest of six children and helped care for
her brothers and sisters.
Arlene married Thomas A. Greenwood, on August 6, 1950 at
Trinity Lutheran. They made their home in Belmond.
While in high school, Arlene worked at the high school
office, ABC Grocery, and First State Bank. She worked at First State until
1951 when she became a full time homemaker. She began working at Steele
Memorial Clinic in 1966 and retired in 1988. Then she cared for her husband
the last years of his life.
Arlene was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran.
She was active in circles and the Lutheran Daughters of the Reformation, and
always believed "the Lord will provide." She enjoyed baking, gardening,
canning, preserving and spending time outdoors with her husband.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and
brother, Marlin Mehl.
Survivors include her children, John (Sheila) Greenwood
of Forest City, Tim (Rose) Greenwood of Polk City and Carolyn Greenwood and
Doug Pals of Belmond; grandchildren, Christine (Ruben) Cantu, Heather (A. J.)
Welch, Tom (Angie) Greenwood, Jennifer, Timmy and Katie Greenwood, Noah
Reed and Tara (Colin) Steenhard; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Brady, Tanner
and Cameron; sisters, Eunice Banning and Lois Patterson of Belmond;
brothers, Rev. Raymond (LaMae) Mehl of Chisago City, Minnesota and Dr.
Eugene (DeEtta) Mehl of Whitehouse, Ohio.

Betty Lepper

Elizabeth (Betty) Louise Koppernagel Lepper, 84, of Belmond, died
on Wednesday, July 16,
2003.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 19, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond,
with John Meyer of First Lutheran of Britt, officiating.
Pianist was Julie Quinn, organist was Maxine Whitty and
soloist was Susan Toftey. Ushers were Henry Gerdes and Robert Kalkwarf.
Casket bearers were Larry Cooper, John W. Neel, Kevin Koppernagel, and
Andrew, William and Joseph Swedenhjelm.
Elizabeth (Betty) was born on November 5, 1918 at Belmond,
the daughter of Fred and Marie (Lorenz) Gabel. She was baptized at St.
John's Lutheran in 1918, was confirmed in 1933, and was a life time member of
the church. She was very active in circle and women's activities.
Betty attended country schools and the Alexander
Consolidated School. One of her proudest accomplishments was receiving her G.E.D.
Diploma through the continuing education program in 1988 at age 70.
Betty worked as a clerk for 40 years in various variety
stores in Belmond. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 59
years, was a volunteer taking calls for the Care Car, was a member of the
Belmond Hospital Auxiliary, belonged to the Grandmothers' Club and Senior
Citizens. She enjoyed sewing with the ALCW at the church, making quilts and
lap robes, gardening, embroidery and making baby comforters and quilts for
her family.
Betty was married to Andrew Earl Koppernagel who died
in 1957, and to Joseph J. Lepper who died in 1976.
In 1993 she sold her home of 49 years and moved to the Gabrielson Apartments. In 1994 she moved to the Belmond Community
Apartments, where she enjoyed the coffees and group activities.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two husbands;
brothers, Fred and Alex Gabel; and sisters, Emma Giofreddi and Mary
Steinwandt.
Survivors include her children, Alice June (Richard)
Christensen of Edwardsburg, Michigan, Sharon Marie (John) Neel of Chariton
and Allen Earl (Linda) Koppernagel of Elkhart, Indiana; grandchildren, Julie
(Eryn) Quinn of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Susan (Scott) Teter of Edwardsburg,
Michigan, Dawn (Derek) Frederickson of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Mark Christensen
of Bradenton, Florida, John W. (Shelby) Neel of Des Moines, Joni (Bill) Swedenhjelm of Norwalk, Timothy (Laurie) Neel of Tracy, California, Kathryn
(Marc) Kellom of Granger, Indiana and Kevin Koppernagel of Elkhart,
Indiana; sisters, Ann Shepherd of Pontiac, Michigan and Esther Cooper of

Mary Harty

Mary Harty, 71, of Belmond, died on Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Belmond
Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 24, at the United Methodist Church in
Belmond, with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill
Cemetery, Eagle Grove. The Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond was in
charge of the arrangements.
Mary was born on March 11, 1932 in Eagle Grove, the
daughter of Tennes and Inga Larson Pederson. She graduated from the Eagle Grove
High School in 1949. She married Gary Harty at the Belmond Methodist Church
Parsonage on December 26, 1951.
Mary was employed at several jobs, including the
Belmond Hospital, Neo-Data, North Iowa Woods, and Belmond Labs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant
son; and father-in-law, Maynard.

Mary L. State

Mary L. State, 68, of Eldora, died on Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Grundy
Center Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 25, at the Dows Community
Funeral Home, with Pastor Stan Watne officiating. Burial was in the Galt
Cemetery.
Mary, the daughter of Jay and Bernice Hanson Brown, was
born on March 21, 1935 in Eldora. She graduated from the Eldora High School in
1954. She was employed as a waitress around the country, then returned to
Eldora in the 70's and was employed in the housekeeping department at the
Eldora Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister,
Marjorie; father-in-law, Don; and brother-in-law, Merle.
She is survived by her husband, Darlyle of Eldora;
mother-in-law, Estella State of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Arlyce (Bill) Rout
of Kanawha and Avonne (Robert) Johnson of Mason City; and brother-in-law,
Vernon (LaVonne) State of Dows.

Sharon Kennedy

Sharon K. Kennedy, 64, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Belmond Medical
Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 26, at 10:30 a.m., at the Belmond United
Methodist Church, with Pastor JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial was in the
Belmond Cemetery.
Sharon Kay, the daughter of Millard (Pete) and Edith
(Nelson) Evans, was born in Algona on August 16, 1938. She was baptized and
confirmed at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. She attended school in Kanawha
where she sang in the choir, played basketball and was the first Kanawha
Labor Day Queen.
Sharon married John (Jack) Williams, Sr. The couple
lived for a time in Texas and were blessed with five children. On May 8,
1972, Sharon married David Kennedy, and they made their home in Belmond.
Sharon sold Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners for many years,
but devoted most of her time to raising her family. In her spare time she
enjoyed going to garage sales.
She was an active member in the Belmond United
Methodist Church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School. Sharon loved the
children and they were very important to her. She helped start the Belmond
Chapter of the Alcoholics Anonymous and celebrated 23 years of sobriety. She
was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her husband, David of Belmond; children,
Jack (Robin) Williams, Jr. of Belmond, Kristie Buseman of Belmond, Randy
(Diane) Williams of Mason City, Rachelle (Terry) Buseman of Belmond and
James (Angie) Williams of Rowan; step-children, Sandy (Ramon) Licon of
Roswell, New Mexico, Linda (Lynn) Loux of Belmond, Jim (Jane) Kennedy of
Kansas City, Missouri, April (Randy) Kemmer of Northbrook, Illinois and
Terri (Jim) Corsello of Mason City; eighteen grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; mother, Edith Evans of Belmond; sisters, Delores
(Roger) Birdsall of Sheffield, Donna (Dean) Legg of Houma, Louisiana and
Deanna (Bob) MacNamara of Meservey; and brother, Jim (RaeAnn) Evans of Lansing,
Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be made to The American
Cancer Society and children's programs at the Belmond United Methodist
Church.

Grace Zaspel

Grace P. Zaspel, 84, of Goodell, died on Friday, July 25, 2003, at her home.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 28, at 1:30 p.m., at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in
Belmond, with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam
Cemetery near Goodell.
Grace Prudence, was born on April 3, 1919 in Goodell, to
Charles and Kathlyn (Pannhoff) Mikesh. She attended country schools in the
Klemme, Goodell, and Forest City areas. She graduated from high school in
Portland, Oregon at the age of 44.
Grace married Willard Zaspel on March 23, 1940 in St.
Paul. They lived in St. Paul, Burlington and then Portland, Oregon. When
Willard was in the service, Grace moved to California. There she worked as a
drill press operator building B-29 and B-26 bombers. She also worked for the
USO. It was there she met Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and other stars.
Grace moved
back to Goodell, Iowa in 1971, where she worked for Abe and Minn Hietland.
She was a member of the American Red Cross.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; and her
husband.
She is survived by sisters, Colina Haan of Miller,
Gladys (Pete) Pals of Belmond, Ruby Dwyer of Harpers Ferry and Constance Roley of Annandale, Minnesota; and brothers, George (Emily) Mikesh and
Charles (Wanda) Mikesh of Belmond.

Minnie Stille

Minnie Stille, 90, formerly of Thornton, died on Monday, July 28, 2003.
Funeral services were
held on Thursday, July 31, at the United Methodist Church in Thornton, with burial in the
Meservey Cemetery.
Minnie was born on July 16, 1913 in rural Meservey, the
daughter of Jakobus and Louise (Stadtlander) Gruis. She married Henry Ruiter in 1930. In 1955 she married Kermit Stille.
Preceding her in death are her husbands, Henry Ruiter
and Kermit Stille; her parents; step-father, Harry Wolters; brothers,
Herman, John, Louie and Bernard Gruis; sisters, Pauline Meints and Tena
Ruiter; half-brother, Clarence Wolters; and step-brothers, Fred and Elwin Wolters.
Survivors include her son, Merlin (Phyllis) Ruiter
of
Meservey; step-sons, Jerry (Marlys) Stille of Mission, Texas and Richard
(Joyce) Stille of Swaledale.
Other local survivors include half-sister-in-law,
Gladys Wolters and step-sister-in-law, Violet Wolters, both of Belmond.
