Anna A. Carolus

May 6, 2003

Anna A. Carolus, 87, of Garner, died on Thursday, May 1, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 5, at the Klemme United Methodist Church.

Anna, daughter of Albert and Rosetta (Schwichtenberg) Tanner, was born on September 20, 1915, near Garner. She graduated from the Klemme High School.

She married Richard Carolus, in 1936. They farmed in the Belmond and Klemme areas until 1971. She was a member of the Klemme United Methodist Church and the UMW.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include her children, Carolyn Jontz, Marvalyn (Henry) Rayhons of Garner, Donna (Robert) Beier and Keith (Roberta) Carolus of Klemme; brothers, George Tanner of Garner and Walter Tanner (Lois) of Mason City; sisters, Lorraine Houdek of Aurora, Minnesota and Beverly Prescott of Klemme.

Priscilla (Olsen) Grajales

May 13, 2003

Priscilla (Olsen) Grajales, 79, died on Sunday, May 4, 2003, in Medellin, Columbia.

Priscilla, the daughter of Julius and Dora Olsen, was born on January 1, 1924 at Rowan. In 1926, the family moved to Belmond. Priscilla graduated from the Belmond High School, attended Waldorf College and the Lutheran Bible Institute. She taught country school in Belmond, at a mission school in Columbia, South America, and at a University in Medellin.

She married Elohim Grajales and they were parents of three children, Ernest, Victoria and Carlos.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; brothers, Harold and Philip Olsen; and sisters, Helen Olsen and Dagny Ness.

Survivors include three children; one grandson; and sisters, Lenora Johnson of Belmond and Judith Knutson of San Antonio, Texas.

Shirlie Eide

May 13, 2003

Shirlie Carol Swenson Eide, 87, of Belmond, died on Saturday, May 10, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 13, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Shirlie, the daughter of Swen and Ellen Wilson Swenson, was born on the family farm on April 13, 1916. She grew up on the farm near Kanawha, where she attended school.

Shirlie married Helge Eide on May 30, 1935 in Belmond, where they lived for two years. Then they moved west of town to Olaf, where they started a turkey business along with a grocery store and service station.

Shirlie's greatest joys were cooking, baking, watching people enjoy their meals, and children. Shirlie had a green thumb and always had many beautiful plants in her home.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Helge; and brothers, Silas (who died as a young boy), William and Melvin.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Patton; grandchildren, Richard (Joyce) Welsh and their children, Eric, Dannielle, and Joseph; Dennis Welsh and son, Ryan; David (JoAnn) Welsh and their children, Travis and Lisa; and Valerie Hayes and her children, Bobby and Alexandria; sister, Ellen Suntken of Belmond; and sister-in-law, Sadie Swenson of Belmond.

Ray Kinseth

May 6, 2003

Raynold L. Kinseth, Jr., 78, died on May 12, 2002, in Simi Valley, California.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, May 12, 2003, at 10:00 a.m., at the Belmond Cemetery. Pastor, Rod Hopp will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Beatrice Gaetzke

May 13, 2003

Beatrice H. Gaetzke, 76, of Belmond, died on Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, May 15, at the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond, with Pastor Herm Gruis officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Sylvia I. Ketchum

May 20, 2003

Sylvia I. Ketchum, 80, died on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at the Belmond Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 19, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Druhl officiating.

Sylvia Ilene, was born on March 8, 1923 at Alexander, the daughter of Hero (Hix) and Anna (Schulte) Frohling. She graduated from the Alexander School in 1941.

On July 5, 1941, Sylvia married Amos Kendall (Kay) Ketchum at Omaha. To this union were born Michael, Dan, Renee and Robin. Sylvia was employed by the Rock Island Railroad for ten years and by the Chicago Northwestern as a station agent for 25 years.

Her interests included fishing, especially trips to Deer River, Minnesota. She enjoyed following her children's extra curricular activities, wrestling, softball, girls basketball and others. She enjoyed hunting with her husband and liked to roller skate. She enjoyed golf and was proud to be a cancer survivor.

Following retirement, she and her friend, Bob Pals traveled to Alaska many times. They also delivered mobile homes to California, Florida and other parts of the country. In later years she enjoyed dancing trips to various ballrooms throughout Iowa.

Sylvia was a member of the Belmond, Waverly, and Rowan Methodist Churches. She volunteered for a time at the Waverly hospital and had worked with the hospice/home health care program there.

She raised her family in Belmond from 1946-71, then lived on the family farm near Rowan, before moving to Waverly where the girls completed school. In 1996 she moved to Mason City for a year, then one year in Belmond, one year in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and one year in Spencer. Recently she lived in Coon Rapids, Minnesota before moving to the Belmond Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Amos; and sister, Magdalene Hunst.

Survivors include her children, "Mick" Michael (Beth) Ketchum of Spencer, Dan Ketchum of Des Moines, Renee and companion, Karen Jacobson of Golden Valley, Minnesota and Robin of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; grandsons, Nicholas Ketchum of Des Moines and Adam Reece of Austin, Texas; sister, Edna Green of Belmond; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Ketchum of Rowan and Ethel Ketchum of Belmond.

Edwin Schad

May 20, 2003

Edwin A. Schad, 89, of Belmond, formerly of Owatonna, Minnesota, died on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 19, 2003, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Father Jim Miller officiating. Interment was held on Tuesday, May 20, in the Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, Minnesota. The family requests memorials be directed to Catholic Charities.

Edwin Arthur, the son of Frank G. and Anna E. Schilling Schad, was born on November 8, 1913 in Plainview, Minnesota. He graduated from the Washburn High School in 1931 and Minneapolis Business College in 1932.

He married Anne Kathryn Moldan, on November 28, 1935 at Incarnation Parish in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in Minneapolis, where Edwin owned and operated a wholesale candy and tobacco business from 1941 until 1956. From 1956 until 1961, he owned and operated Owatonna Bowling Center and built, owned and operated Fair Lanes Bowling in Owatonna. He retired in 1961.

Edwin enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, golfing, and reading. He especially enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and sports on television. He was a member of the St Joseph's Catholic Church in Owatonna. He was active in Knights of Columbus, Elks and the Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Theodore.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Anne of Belmond; daughters, Mary Jean Kroiss of Little Canada, Minnesota and Kathryn (Stephen) McClintock of Belmond; grandchildren, Christine Kroiss and Brian Larson; sisters, Louise of Minneapolis, Florence of Wisconsin and Marjorie of Minneapolis; and brother, Ralph of Houston, Texas.

George Stille

George A. Stille, 88, formerly of the Goodell and Klemme areas, died on Sunday, May 25, 2003, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 29, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial took place in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

George Allen, the son of J. J. and Clara Gast Stille, was born on October 11, 1914 near Klemme. He grew up near Klemme where he attended country schools.

George married Ina A. Bergerfer on October 16, 1934, at the parsonage in Klemme. The couple made their home in Spencer where George worked on road construction for seven years. They returned to Goodell in 1941 and George worked on the Hancock County Road Crew for 36 years. They lived east of Goodell for 50 years and moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner in 1998.

George was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goodell.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Quentin, Kermit and Virgil; and sister, Gertrude Bier.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Maxine (Mac) Dresbach of Mason City and Sharyl (Marlin) Stadtlander of Garner; sons, Wayne (Gloria) Stille of Goodell, Kenton Stille of Poolsville, Texas and Lynn (Janice) Stille of Davenport; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and sisters, Fern Carlson of Clear Lake and Lucille (Cecil) Bridges of Thornton.

Ruby Kurtz

June 5, 2003

Ruby M. Kurtz, 90, a resident of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, died on Monday, May 26, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 31, at the Klemme United Methodist Church, with Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Ell Township Cemetery near Klemme. The Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home in Klemme, was in charge of the arrangements.

Organist was Madelyn Priebe and soloist was Tom Renner. Eulogists were Karo Brattrud and Kay Trampel. Ushers were Calvin Bruggeman and John Schwichtenberg.

Honorary casket bearers were Leo Gardalen, Eugene Greiman, Curtis Greiman and Don Best. Active bearers were her grandchildren, Michael Hinrichsen, Kody Trampel, Ryan Brattrud, William (Billy) Larson, Jessie Hinrichsen, Kasey Trampel, Jeanna Brattrud and Nicole Larson.

Ruby Miller, was born on September 24, 1912 in Thornton, the daughter of Erastus and Margaret (Hansen) Miller. She was raised by her grandparents, Hans and Bessie Hansen. She attended Klemme Schools, graduating in 1931.

Ruby married William (Bill) Kurtz on February 21, 1933 at the Klemme Methodist Church Parsonage. They moved to Ruby's grandfather's farm which Hans Hansen had homesteaded. In addition to assisting her husband on the farm, Ruby was a homemaker. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren and hosting family gatherings, especially their annual Christmas Eve gathering. She followed the many activities of her grandchildren and kept newspaper clippings of their accomplishments.

After her husbands death in 1966, Ruby purchased a home in Klemme, living there for 16 years. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, cross stitching, raising flowers, and visiting with friends and family. She was a long-time member of the Grandmother's Club in Klemme and the UMW at church.

In 1982, she moved to Prairie View in Garner where she lived for 10 years. Then she moved to Oakwood in Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband.

Survivors include son, William (LeeAnn) Kurtz of Klemme; daughter, Karen Bender of Madison, Alabama; granddaughters, Kim Ann (Mark) Hinrichsen of Osage, Kay Trampel of Belmond, Karo (Scott) Brattrud of Clear Lake, Konnie (Donald) Larson of Garner, Michelle Bender of St. Cloud, Minnesota and Tracy Bender of Madison, Alabama; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Stephen Fuller

June 5, 2003

Stephen Lee Fuller, 56, died on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 30, at the Tenold Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond, with Deacon Nick Schmit from the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church officiating. Interment was in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Belmond. Casket bearers were Matt Fuller, Josh Fuller, Jim Fuller and Geoff Fuller.

Stephen was born on January 21, 1947 in Belmond, the son of Sumner G. and Carrie D. Fuller. He was baptized at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Stephen was employed for many years with the Story County Development Center in Ames. He was a senior employee at the time of his retirement in 2000.

He had a life-long love of flowers and music.

He is survived by his brothers, Ronald (Sue) Fuller of Bourbanais, Illinois, Greg (Kathy) Fuller of Wichita Falls, Texas and Denny (Barb) Fuller of Minoqua, Wisconsin.

Milton Followwill

June 4, 2003

M. L. "Pete" Followwill, 73, died on Thursday, May 29, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 31, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Special music was by organists, Dona Cleveland and Lyn Courson, a duet by Denny and Don Meyer and postlude by Jon Hinman. Casket bearers were Merle Been, George Hinman, Harry Nelson, Tom Stadtlander, Gary Followwill and Harvey Meyer. Ushers were Jeff Anderson and Al Rodriguez.

Pete was the son of Matthew and Olah Martin Followwill, born on March 11, 1930 in Centerville, Iowa. He graduated from the Centerville High School in 1948. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1950, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in the Korean War and was discharged in 1954.

Pete and Jeanette E. Meyer, were married on January 15, 1956 in Manly. To this union two children were born. They made their home in Belmond. In 1954, Pete was a salesman for Followwill Implement in Belmond, and he became co-owner in 1956. In 1970 he became owner-operator of the John Deere dealership until 1982 when he retired.

Pete enjoyed his grandsons, loved golfing and sports, was a member of the Belmond Jaycees, was a founding member of the Belmond Country Club and a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Julie Hegge of Osceola, Wisconsin and her children, Anthony (Barb) Hegge and their son, Bryce of Monticello, Minnesota and Andrew Hegge of Osceola; son, Jerry (Kim) Followwill, M.D. of Victoria, Texas and their children, Sam and Tom; brother, Dorwin Followwill; and sisters, Margaret Hawk and Pat Bivins.
