Delbert Lindstrom

Funeral services for Delbert Lindstrom were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 28 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Allen Hermeier officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Steve Quast, John O'Byrne, Gerald Payne, Henry Elwood, Richard Holten, Shane Fischer, Bob Davidson, and Russ Ruhland. Honorary pallbearers were: Lowell Sovereign, David Shaw, Harold Bengfort, Arnold Peter, Glen Dillon, Tom Bouska, Don Hanson, Walt Haynes, and Dick Hellman.

Delbert Lindstrom was born June 16, 1942, the son of Merrill and Hilda Lindstrom. He grew up in Ida County on his parent's farm, and graduated from Galva High School. He attended various post high school institutions, but pursued his interest in Mortuary Science at the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1963.

He met Myra Rosdail his senior year of high school and were wed August 4, 1963.

Del enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and traveling.

He is survived by his wife Myra; three children: Michelle Ruhland of Fort Dodge, Doree Fischer of Waterloo, and Lee of Cresco; two grandchildren; and one brother: Darold of Ida Grove.

Del was preceded in death by his parents


Verena Novotny

Funeral services for Verena Novotny of Protivin were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Her children placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Monty and Lori Riha, Chad, Aaron and Lisa Fritz, and Mark Nierling. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Verena, 84, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton after a brief illness.

Verena Anna Novotny was born March 14, 1919, in Calmar Township, near Spillville, Winneshiek County, the daughter of William and Pearl (Brown) Schneberger. She attended school at Calmar through the eighth grade and returned home to help her parents and sister farm.

On October 27, 1936 she married Clarence Riha at St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville. They made their home on a farm in the Spillville area. On July 18, 1962 Clarence died and on February 20, 1965 she married Clarence Novotny at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They lived on the farm in the Little Turkey area. On January 6, 1973 Clarence died and she moved to Protivin. She worked at Bucheit Produce in Calmar and Kitchens of Sara Lee where she worked until retirement.

She loved to garden, and her cat "Blacky".

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish, its Rosary Society, and a neighborhood Birthday Club.

She is survived by two sons: Stanley Riha of Winnebago, MN and Clarence Riha of Cedar Rapids; two daughters: Betty Nierling of Cedar Rapids and Mary Fritz of Protivin; two step children: Joanie Gebel of Alta Vista and Jerry Novotny of Vinton; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister: Bernice Swenson of Colombia, MO.

Verena was preceded in death by her husbands; one great-granddaughter; and her parents.


Leonard Wicks

Funeral services for Leonard "Whimpy" Wicks were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 24 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak. Pallbearers were: Eldon Snyder, Gary Snyder, Darrell Wicks, Loren Wicks, Alan Daskam, and Scott Johnson. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leonard, 85, died Easter Sunday, April 20, 2003 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Leonard Milton Wicks was born Easter Sunday, March 31, 1918 in Bluffton Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Claude and Olive (Olson) Wicks. As a child he lived on his parents farm, attended rural school, and graduated from Burr Oak High School. He served in the U.S. Army with the 63rd Chemical Depot Company from 1942 until 1945.

Leonard worked for a tree trimming service and also rented his family farm until an injury forced an early retirement.

In the 1950s, he moved to Kendallville. He was approached by the Winneshiek County Supervisors and accepted a job as a maintainer operator. He received recognition for having the best improved roads in the state of Iowa. He held this job for 24 years until retiring in 1979.

On September 12, 1964 he married Joan Mary Stejskal at the Assumption Church in Canton, MN.

He loved the outdoors; hunting fishing, and gardening.

He is survived by his wife Joan; his children: John of Schaller, Ruth Stearns of Ridgeway, Kaye Steege of Cedar Rapids, Tony of Cresco, Anne of Watauga, TX, and Dean of Mason City; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother: Marvin of Harmony, MN; and one sister: Marie Snyder of Kalona.

Leonard was preceded in death by an infant son: Paul; his parents; and two brothers: Harley and Marion.


Paul Johnson

Graveside services for Paul "Pappy" Johnson will be held at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 30 at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Paul, 96, died Friday, April 25, 2003 at Martin Luther Manor in Bloomington, MN.

Paul Johnson was born September 23, 1906 in Thomson, MN, the son of Sam L. and Mary (Halverson) Johnson. He moved with his family to Belmond when he was three. He graduated from Belmond High School, business college in Des Moines, and in 1940 graduated from the University of Iowa in Dentistry. He began his dental practice in Lake Mills.

On October 18, 1942 he married Ora Brue, shortly before he left for duty in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. He served in the Navy during World War II and then again during the Korean conflict. After returning from active duty, he began his dental practice in Riceville where he practiced dentistry for 30 years before retiring in 1982.

Following Ora's death in 1984, he moved to Burnsville, MN in 1985. There he was active in the Burnsville Senior Center until his move to Meadow Woods in Bloomington, MN in April of 1999 and to Martin Luther Manor in December of that same year.

He is survived by one son: Brian of Burnsville, MN; two grandsons; and one brother: Henry of Belmond.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
