Palmer Anderson

There are no services being held for Palmer Anderson of Clinton, formerly of Waterloo.

His body has been donated to the Des Moines Osteopathic School with burial at a later date in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball in Waterloo handled the arrangements.

Palmer, 80, died Saturday, March 29, 2003 at the Harbor Crest Home in Fulton, IL.

Palmer B. Anderson was born March 11, 1923 in Cresco, the son of Gus and Petra (Pederson) Anderson. He was a graduate of Cresco High School.

On April 2, 1946 he married Emma Anderson in Ridgeway. Palmer was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. He had served during World War II.

Palmer had formerly been a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo and was currently a member of the Orleans Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Emma of Clinton; one son: Jerry of Cedar Rapids; one daughter: Beverly Smith of Fulton, IL; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Palmer was preceded in death by one grandson; his parents; four brothers: Lester, Oscar, Arnold, and Arthur; and two sisters: Agnes and Laura.


Harold Bauer

Funeral services for Harold Bauer of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Interment was in Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Harold, 85, died Thursday, March 27, 2003 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Harold Bauer was born January 4, 1918 in Loretta, NE, the son of Carl and Orpha (Philamalee) Bauer.

On June 25, 1942 he married Clarice DeMaris in Mason City. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a retired farmer.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening, especially his tomato plants.

He is survived by his wife Clarice of Riceville; two sons: Kenny of LeRoy, MN and John of Riceville; two daughters: Jeanie Foster of Riceville and Linda Winfieid of LeRoy, MN; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by one great-grandson; his parents; one brother: Harvey; and two sisters: Alice and Lucille.


Ernest Pecinovsky

Funeral services for Ernest "Ernie" Pecinovsky of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.

Interment will be later in the spring at New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Ernest, 84, died Monday, March 24, 2003 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Ernest Pecinovsky was a lifelong resident of Howard County. He farmed for many years near Protivin.

He enjoyed gardening, and fishing.

He is survived by two sisters: Anna Havel of Cresco and Grace Roszell of Waterloo.


Dorothy Scovill

Funeral services for Dorothy Scovill were held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Harold Kamppi officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Dorothy, 87, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at Texas Terrace Care Center in St. Louis Park, MN.

Dorothy Ruth Scovill was born February 26, 1916 in Riceville, the daughter of Leonard and Gertrude (Tinker) Steele. She graduated from Riceville High School.

On August 8, 1933 she married Gordon Scovill.

She was a former resident of Pine County, MN; Somerset, WI; Longmont, CO; Springdale, AR; and Burnsville, MN.

She is survived by four sons: Donald of Shelby, NC, David of Blythewood, SC, Daniel of West Palm Beach, FL, and Philip of Springdale, AR; four daughters: Doris Cooke of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Darlene Noden of Reinholds, PA. Dorcas Scoville of Burnsville, MN, and Esther Walker of Denver, CO; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Gertrude Weatherford of Cresco.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Gordon; and one grandson.


Earl Schnur

Funeral services for Earl Schnur were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 27 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco with Intern Blaine MacNeill officiating.

Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Earl, 72, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003 in his home at rural Ridgeway, Winneshiek County, after a long battle with cancer.

William Earl Schnur was born January 20, 1931 at Colo, the son of William Henry and Lila (Baker) Schnur. He attended the Warrington Country School for his grade school education, and graduated from Colo High School in May of 1949. Following his education, he returned home and helped the family on the farm.

On February 24, 1951 he married Doris Jacob at St. John's Lutheran Church in State Center. He entered the U.S. Army on June 1, 1951. He graduated from the Armored School at Ft. Knox, KY as a tank mechanic in December 1951, and in January 1952 he was sent to Korea where he served as a tank mechanic and tank retriever operator until his honorable discharge in February of 1953. From 1953 until 1961, he was a carpenter and he farmed in the Colo area, and in 1961 he and his family moved to the Cresco/Ridgeway area.

Earl liked the outdoors. He liked to cut wood, weld, fix and build things. He constructed his house and most of the buildings on his farm. He liked racing and loved to travel. Every winter, they would travel to Arizona and Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife Doris; one daughter: Marleen Burgess of Cresco; four sons: Michael of Cresco, Marvin of Ridgeway, Merlin of Cresco, and Martin of Ridgeway; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters: Elsie Ryan of Cresco and Louise Wycoff of Nevada; and two brothers: Ray of Colo and Rusty of Faribault, MN.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Ralph.


Adeline Zbornik

Funeral services for Adeline Zbornik were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29 at the Notre Dame Parish, Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Robert Blazek, Richard Blazek, William Blazek, and Steve Zbornik. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Adeline, 84, died Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Heritage Gardens Health Care Center in Loma Linda, CA of natural causes.

Adeline M. Zbornik was born January 17, 1919 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Cresco, the daughter of Joseph F. and Antoinette (Koliha) - Schneider - Zbornik. She attended school in Cresco, first at St. Joseph Elementary School, then Assumption High School from which she graduated in 1936. After high school she worked in Cresco for several years including helping in her father's store, Zbornik Brothers. In 1946 she moved to Bloomington, IL and worked as a bookkeeper at a Lincoln/Mercury dealership. In 1957 she moved to Los Angeles where she worked for a short time before moving to Orange County one year later. In 1958, she started as a bookkeeper with Hughes Aircraft in Fullerton, CA until she retired in 1986. In 1987 she moved to a retirement community in the city of Highland, CA, adjacent to San Bernardino.

She enjoyed biking, walking and flower gardening. She was accomplished in art and handy craft projects, sewing, ceramics, drawing, calligraphy and making greeting cards.

In January of 2003 she moved to an assisted living facility. She broke her hip after a short time there.

Adeline was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Raphael and Arnold Zbornik; two half brothers: Bernard Schneider and Joseph V. Zbornik; and a half sister: Eleonora Blazek.


Edmund Stika

Funeral services for Edmund Stika of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 31 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Pallbearers were: Andy Stika, Ben Stika, Casey Stika, Cody Stika, Chad Dirksen and Robert Stika, Jr.. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Edmund, 77, died Thursday, March 27, 2003 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

Edmund Frank Stika was born January 9, 1926 in Howard County, north of Protivin, the son of Joseph F. and Philomena (Landa) Stika. He was baptized and confirmed in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was educated in the rural school near his home. Following his schooling, he returned home to help his family on the farm. On April 19, 1946 he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the military police. Eighteen months later he was discharged and returned home.

On May 3, 1948 he married Edith Komarek in the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin

He farmed his entire life. He liked fishing, putting puzzles together, making good popcorn, and playing his accordion. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Church, the Catholic Workmen, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Edith; his children: Judy Lechtenberg of Ft. Atkinson, Alvin of Nashua, Dennis of Cresco, and Carol O'Donnell of Nora Springs; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother: Arthur.

Edmund was preceded in death by one son: David; his parents; and one brother: Robert.

Leland Askelson

Funeral services for Leland "Lee" Askelson of Lisbon were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon with Rev. Dave Hinman officiating.

Interment will be at Lisbon Cemetery at a later date. Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel handled the arrangements.

Leland, 86, died Saturday, March 29, 2003 at Golden Pond Retirement Residence, Bradenton, FL from a brief illness.

Leland N. Askelson was born February 4, 1917 in Bluffton Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Charlie and Myrtle (Gilman) Askelson.

On November 11, 1939 he married Marjory F. Peter at Mason City. Lee and his family farmed near Cresco and Decorah, before moving to Lisbon in 1955. At age 50, he received his GED in 1967. Lee worked at Cedar Rapids Engineering as a machinist and retired after 27 years from Kwik Way Engineering in Marion.

He was a 45 year member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers #831 of Cedar Rapids. He was active in the Civil Air Patrol during WWII. Lee served as a peace officer in Lisbon, and a member of the Veteran's Public Safety Unit in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon and active in the Lutheran Laymans' League.

He loved gardening, dancing, reading, and traveling.

He is survived by nine children: Carol Vorwald of Iowa City; Phyllis Greenlee of Ajijic, Mexico, Eldon of Meridian, ID, James of Appleton, WI, David of Iowa City, Robert of Jacksonville, FL, Jeannette Hinman of Bradenton, FL, Thomas of Vicksburg, MI, and Mark of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Leland was preceded in death by his wife Marjory on August 22, 2000; two sons: Leland and Charles; one great-granddaughter; and a half-brother: Roger Gilman.


Bernadine Dietzenbach

Funeral services for Bernadine Dietzenbach of St. Lucas were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4 at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Interment was in St. Lukes Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Lucas. Her three children placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Gary Mihm, Bill Mihm, Don Koshatka, Tom Kacher, Darryl Dietzenbach, and Parnell Brincks. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Bernadine, 84, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton after a brief illness.

Bernadine Catherine Dietzenbach was born in rural Fayette County, near St. Lucas, the daughter of William and Anna (Croatt) Mihm. She received her education in the St. Lukes School in St. Lucas.

On August 30, 1938 she married Al Dietzenbach at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas. They farmed west of St. Lucas for 62 years retiring in 2000.

She was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters for many years and St. Lukes Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, cooking, and traveling.

She is survived by her husband Al; two sons: Lyle of Protivin and Vern of St. Lucas; one daughter: Marcia Swehla of Petersburg, KY; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Marinus and Donald of St. Lucas; and two sisters: Alfreda Koshatka of Protivin and Alice Kacher of Ft. Atkinson.

Bernadine was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter; and her parents.


Bernard Conway

Funeral services for Bernard Conway of Elma, formerly of Chicago, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Rev. John Hemann officiating.

Inurnment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Bernard, 79, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.

Bernard P. Conway was born April 4, 1923 in Chicago, IL, the son of Bernard Phillip and Rose (Cogan) Conway. He attended school in Chicago and went on to attend Loras College in Dubuque. During college he was drafted into the US Army and served during WWII. After being honorably discharged from the Army he returned to Chicago, and served as the administrator of the Chicago Hospital after his father's death. He later was a Deputy Sheriff for the Cook County Sheriff's Department until his retirement in 1988.

On November 13, 1973 he married Audrey Birmingham Nibaur in Chicago. They lived in Chicago. Following his wife's death in 1998 he moved to the Colonial Manor in Elma.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

He enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, music, and sports.

He is survived by three step children: Rosella Walters of Chicago, Violet Huey of Kansas City, MO, and Francis Nibaur of Lourdes; 13 step grandchildren; and 24 step great-grandchildren.

Bernard was preceded in death by his wife Audrey on August 2, 1998; his parents; one brother: Steven; and one sister: Rose Mary Carroll.


Sandra Gjere

Funeral services for Sandra Gjere of Highlandville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. David Andreae officiating.

Interment was in Big Canoe Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Sandra, 62, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a sudden illness.

She is survived by her husband Maynard of Highlandville; two daughters: Deb Richter of Bellechester, MN and Denise Bohr of Decorah; one granddaughter; one sister: Pat McCormick; and one brother: Joseph Lynch of Osh Kosh, WI.


Gordetta Mosher

Funeral services for Gordetta Mosher of Riceville will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 10 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Gale Richards officiating.

Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford with graveside services at 2:00 p.m. Thursday.

Family and friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Wednesday during the hours of 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Gordetta, 92, died Sunday, April 6 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Gaylord Torney

Funeral services for Gaylord Torney of Riceville were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville with Rev. Dan Christiansen officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Pallbearers were: Tom Anderlik, Harry Jensen, Gerry David Buttolph, Rich Linkenmeyer, Randy Torney, and Arnold Felper.

Gaylord, 72, died Monday, March 31, 2003 at his home in Riceville.

Gaylord Torney was born April 3, 1930 in Riceville, the son of Glendon G. and Mary (Buttolph) Torney. He attended and graduated from Riceville High School. Following his schooling, he moved to Waterloo and began working as a wiring machine operator at Rath Packing Co. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

On August 26, 1951 he married Marilyn Wilson. On September 7, 1951 he was inducted into the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge on August 20, 1953. Following his discharge from the Army, they lived in Waterloo. In 1963, they bought the Kakac Store in Saratoga and in 1966 he started working for Howard County as a maintainer operator, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the American Legion, Roy Gue Post in Riceville.

He liked to fish, play cards, and go to the casinos.

On January 12, 1989, Marilyn died and on September 15, 1990 he married Doloris Brockney at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He is survived by his wife Doloris; one daughter: Debbie Smith of Riceville; four step children: Roger, Rick, Jerry and Sandra Brockney; five grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one brother: Gary Torney of Riceville.

Gaylord was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn; one great-grandson; his parents; and one brother: Ronald.


Oscar Aasen

Funeral services for Oscar Aasen of Knoxville, formerly of New Hampton were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28 at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico with Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Interment was in Jerico Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jerico. Pallbearers were: Kenny Fossen, Harvey Knutson, Paul L. Johnson, Ronald Anderson, Bud Paulson, and Lawrence Olson. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Oscar, 94, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Knoxville.

Oscar L. Aasen was born November 2, 1908 in rural Chickasaw County, Jacksonville Township, the son of Lars and Sigred (Kjarvik) Aasen. He attended rural country school in Jacksonville Township.

On April 7, 1942 he began his career with the United States Army. He participated in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign. On Septembert 19, 1945 he was honorably dischargd ad received the Good conduct Medal, Five Overseas Bars and Three Bronze Stars. After his discharge Oscar worked for the Chickasaw County Road Department and also did mechanical work for Nystel Brothers. Oscar later moved to South Dakota where he worked as a farmhand. In Wyoming, Oscar became a resident of the Veterans Home and later moved to the Ottomwa Veterans Home. He had been a resident of the Knoxville Veterans Home for the last 20 years. Oscar always had a special place in his heart for horses.

He is survived by one brother: Lloyd of New Hampton; two sisters: Ella Gordon and Charlotte Ferkenstad both of New Hampton.

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Melvin, Selmar, and Merle; and two sisters: Gertrude Guetzkow and Anna Gordon.


Russell Ferch

Funeral services for Russell Ferch of New Hampton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 31 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor David Bergstrom and Pastor Kevin Frey officiating.

Interment was in New Hampton Cemetery in New Hampton. Pallbearers were: Brian Sinnwell, Zachary Sinnwell, Jeremy Maklenburg, Jason Maklenburg, Jamie DeSloover, Tim Brincks, Rich Greenlee, and Randy Soldwisch. Honorary pallbearers were: Sarah Sinnwell, Meghan Ferch, and Amanda Ferch. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funerals Home handled the arrangements.

Russell, 66, died Thursday, March 27, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Russell C. Ferch was born May 24, 1936 at his parents home near Nashua, the son of Carl and Margaret (Carpenter) Ferch. He received his education in a rural country school West of Nashua. In 1942, Russell was baptized at the Pleasant Hill Evangelical Church and was confirmed in 1949 at St. John Lutheran Church both in Nashua. In 1954, he joined the United States Marine Corp. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1957 and transferred to the Marine Corp Reserves for three years. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

On October 18, 1959 he married Beverly Bemis at the United Methodist Church in New Hampton. They made their home in New Hampton. He worked for Supersweet Feeds driving feed truck and later for the Farmers Coop. He began 26 years of work for the Department of Transportation, retiring in July of 1997. While working for the DOT he also farmed.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, and playing cards.

He was a member of the VFW and Fae Steine American Legion Post #38, and also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Good Sam's Club.

He is survived by his wife Beverly; one son: Ronald of New Hampton; one daughter: Karen Sinnwell of Nashua; five grandchildren; and four sisters: Ortha Liddle, Elaine Lantow, Mardelle Greenlee, all of Nashua, and Marie Schmidt of Corona, CA.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister: Marjorie.


Leonard Trouten

Funeral services for Leonard Trouten of Harmony, MN were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 31 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony with Rev. David Laechel officiating.

Interment was in State Line Cemetery in rural Harmony.

Leonard, 97, died Saturday, March 29, 2003 at his home in Harmony.

Leonard Henry Trouten was born April 22, 1905 in Winneshiek County, the son of William and Zora (Jacklin) Trouten. He was a life long member of the State Line Methodist Church.

On November 29, 1940 he married Inez Irene Fisk at the Methodist parsonage in Harmony. He was a farmer and was also involved in a number of other businesses in the Harmony area.

He is survived by his wife Inez of Harmony; one son: William; and two grandchildren

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Lyle and Luverne; and a baby sister.

Kathleen Leibold

Funeral services for Kathleen Leibold of Fort Atkinson will be held at 3:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 16 at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery in Fort Atkinson.

Kathleen, 59, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah followng a long illness.

Gordetta Mosher

Funeral services for Gordetta Mosher of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 10 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Gale Richards officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gordetta, 92, died Sunday, April 6, 2003 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Gordetta June Mosher was born June 7, 1910 at Marble Rock, the daughter of Clarence and Zoe (Kenney) Warner. She attended local schools and graduated from Marble Rock High School.

On October 17, 1927 she married Virgil W. Mosher in Mason City. Gordetta assisted her husband in their electrical business.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed gardening and sewing.

She is survived by one son: Harvey of Riceville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild.

Gordetta was preceded in death by her husband Virgil in 1985; one son: Willis; one granddaughter; her parents; one brother: Ceo; and one sister: Lucy McCauley.


Clair Nibaur

Funeral services for Clair Nibaur were held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes with Rev. John Hemann officiating.

Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Pallbearers were: Richard Drtina, David Drtina, Mark Drtina, Dan Drtina, David Sobolik, and Patrick Ryan. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Clair, 80, died Friday, April 4, 2003 after a short illness.

Clair Joseph Nibaur was born August 12, 1922 in Howard County near Lourdes, the son of Joseph W. and Margaret (Urban) Nibaur. He was baptized in his faith at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church by the Rev. Patrick Hogan and he was confirmed by the Rev. F.J. Renier. He attended school though the eighth grade at Lourdes. Following his education, he returned home to help his family on the farm. In the mid 1940's he purchased the farm that he lived and died on.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the Howard County Farm Bureau, and the Knights of Columbus.

He loved the outdoors and farming. His only hobby was driving through the countryside looking at machinery.

He is survived by one sister: Helen Drtina of Cresco; and one brother: Jerome of Cresco.

Clair was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers: Claude, Leonard, and Clarence.


Verena Novotny

Funeral services for Verena Novotny, age 84, of Protivin will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 16 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin.

Interment will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Conway Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by two sons: Stanley Riha of Winnebago, MN and Clarence Riha of Cedar Rapids; two daughters: Betty Nierling of Cedar Rapids and Mary Fritz of Protivin; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister: Bernice Swenson of Colombia, MO.


Irvin Engbretson

Funeral services for Irvin Engbretson of Decorah were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at the Madison Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah. Pallbearers were: Dennis and Dean Larson, Bruce and Dean Witzke, Ted Kjosa, Richard, Kenneth and Robert Engbretson, and Virgil Kellison. Honorary pallbearers were: Helof-Holm VFW Chapter #1977, Bernatz-Symonds Am. Legion Post #163, Hamre-Giesen DAV Post #8, and Decorah I.O.O.F. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Irvin, 88, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah where he had been a resident since December.

Irvin Raymond Engbretson was born June 16, 1914 in Bluffton Twp., the son of Engbret and Minnie (Gilbertson) Engbretson. He was baptized July 12, 1914 and confirmed May 26, 1929 at Madison Lutheran Church. He attended Madison Twp. School and Decorah High School. Irvin then worked as a farm hand for area farmers. On March 26, 1941 he joined the US Army serving in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was wounded on February 4, 1944 and was sent back to the States to McAlester, OK.

On February 9, 1945 he married Marjorie Houston at McAlester. Upon returning to Iowa, they ran a restaurant in Cedar Rapids for a short time before moving back to Winneshiek Co. to farm west of Decorah until moving to town in 1990. During this time Irvin drove a lime truck, gas truck, and worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation, and the Decorah Water Department.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, sports, making novelties, and he played in a band. He was a member of the Decorah I.O.O.F., V.F.W. and Madison Lutheran Church having served on the Council.

He is survived by one daughter: Carol Sue Engbretson of Decorah.

Irvin was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie; his parents; two brothers: Elmer and Theodore; and three sisters: Leora Witzke, Emma and Gladys Engbretson.


Cleo Weber

Funeral services for Cleo Weber, formerly of Riceville and Charles City, were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Riceville with Rev. Gale Richards officiating.

Interment was in Liberty Cemetery in Little Cedar. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Cleo, 83, died Friday, April 11, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Cleo Maxine Weber was born January 19, 1920 in Osage, the daughter of Oscar E. and Ethyl (Slagle) Witzel. Cleo was baptized and a member of the First Congregational Church of Christ. She attended country school around New Haven and moved with her parents to Little Cedar where she graduated from high school.

On November 1, 1941 she married Joseph Weber. They farmed in and around Riceville before moving to Riceville in 1965. Cleo worked outside the home in restaurants in Riceville and Cresco as a cook and waitress. She also worked as a unit clerk at Mercy Hospital in Mason City for nine years.

She is survived by two sons: Jerry of Elkader and Dean of Rockwell; one daughter: Mary Burke of Lexington, KY; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one sister: Lola Church of Cresco.

Cleo was preceded in death by her husband Joe in May of 2001; one granddaughter; her parents; and one sister.

Darin Bodermann

Funeral services for Darin Bodermann of Elma were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Interment was in Howard Cemetery in Elma. Pallbearers were: Korwin Schmidt, Brandon Grover, Keith Harper, Andrew Harper, Randy Swestka, and Mike Hudecek. Honorary pallbearers were: Brady Halverson and the Crestwood FFA. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Darin, 19, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Darin Allan Bodermann was born July 21, 1983 at Osage, the son of Dale and Darlene (Austinson) Bodermann. He was baptized on August 28, 1983 and was confirmed on May 31, 1998 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma where he was a member. He was a 2002 graduate of Crestwood High School. While in high school, he was a member of the Crestwood FFA, golf team, and choir. He was a member of the Protivin Pals 4-H Club, 4-H County Council, and his church youth group.

He was currently residing in Protivin while attending Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar in the auto technician program and a part-time employee at the Plant Peddler in Cresco.

Darin's love was cars, especially his purple Firebird. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, snow boarding, and snowmobiling.

He is survived by his parents: Dale and Darlene; one brother: Duane of Elma; three sisters: Darla Erickson of Spring Valley, MN, Diane Trende of Cresco, and Darcy Wemark of Ridgeway.

Darin was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.


Gerald Lofy

Funeral services for Gerald "Jerry" Lofy were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gerald, 88, died Thursday, April 17, 2003 at the Muse-Norris Unit, North Iowa Hospice, Mason City of natural causes.

Gerald Lofy was born March 15, 1915 in New Hampton, the son of George and Margaret (Gardner) Lofy. At an early age the family moved to Alta Vista where Gerald received his education at St. Bernard's Catholic School. He served in the US Army during World War II and was honorably discharged.

Gerald was married for a brief period and the couple had one son. Their son David Weber was killed in action during the Viet Nam War. Gerald worked at the former Red Line Vending retiring in the late 1970's. He was a member of Holy Family Parish.

He is survived by one brother: Giles of Minneapolis; and one sister: Margaret Cornwell of New Hampton.

Gerald was preceded in death by one son; his parents; and two sisters: Genevieve Nehl and Elizabeth Horn.


Mary Corcoran

Funeral services for Mary Corcoran were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 21 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Interment was in Marshall Lutheran Church Cemetery in Adams, MN. Pallbearers were: Steve Corcoran, Nick Hanks, Darrell Hanks, Rodney Anderson, Gary Corcoran, and Gene Corcoran. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mary, 80, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Mary Corcoran was born July 25, 1922 in Liverpool, England, the daughter of John and Sarah (Brathwaite) Gallagher. She was educated in the schools in Liverpool and worked at Little Woods doing clerical work prior to meeting her husband.

On March 7, 1953 she married David Corcoran, a service man in England, and she came to this country in September of 1954. They came to Cresco and Dave started working for the telephone company. She lived in Cresco until she became too ill and moved to Forest City to be cared for by her daughter.

She was truly British, and never really gave up her British citizenship.

She loved to read, ride a bicycle when she was younger. She frequently traveled back to England.

She was a nurses aide at the Evans Memorial Home.

She is survived by her husband: Dave; one son: Steven of St. Charles, MN; one daughter: Sharon Hanks of Forest City; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother: Richard of Auckland, New Zealand; and three sisters: Agnes Homan, Sally Hayes, and Bridget Yegliss, all of Liverpool, England.

Mary was preceded in death by two brothers: Thomas and John.


Emma Hruska

Funeral services for Emma Hruska were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 21 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. John A. Moser officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Emma, 88, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at the Cresco Care Center where she has made her home since October of 1997.

Emma M. Hruska was born April 28, 1914 in Howard County, near Protivin, the daughter of James and Frances (Stika) Zajicek. She attended the rural school and following her education she started working for other farmers as a hired girl.

On October 9, 1934 she married August F. Hruska in the Holy Trinity Church at Protivin. They lived on the family home farm until they retired and moved into Protivin in 1977.

She liked flowers and small animals.

She is survived by her children: Beatrice Miller of Phoenix, AZ, Marcella Burke of New Hampton, James of Protivin, Irene Kirschbaum of Ankeny, and Jane Voyek of Noblesville, IN; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Emma was preceded in death by her husband August on January 22, 1990; one daughter: Judy; her parents; and one brother: Edward.


Leonard Wicks

Funeral services for Leonard Wicks of rural Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 24 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Service at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco.

Evangeline Fujioka

Funeral services for Evangeline Fujioka were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Inurnment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Evangeline, 84, died Saturday, April 12, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Evangeline Marie Fujioka was born December 6, 1918 on a farm southwest of Cresco, the daughter of Page Swain Minear and Kathryn (Daley) Minear. She was baptized at home the day of her birth and confirmed at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. She attended country school, Assumption Junior High and Cresco High School graduating in 1938. Following her education, she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked at the Pentagon during WWII. She then moved to California and later attended Los Angeles City College where she learned paralegal skills.

On February 15, 1950 she married Shunro Fujioka before a judge in Glendale, CA. She worked as a paralegal in her sister's law firm, she sold real estate, and managed apartment buildings.

In 1990, she returned to Cresco for a reunion and became sick, moved into the Cresco Care Center to get well, and has since made her home there.

She liked to read, watch TV, write letters, go out to eat Chinese food, and play cards.

She is survived by one son: Michael of Coto de Caza, CA; one granddaughter; one brother: Irvin Minear of Cresco; and one sister: Marjorie Jacobson of Houston, TX.

Evangeline was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: John and Robert; and three sisters: Mary Cooney, Virginia Strasser, and Clare Poindexter.


Lillian Rollins

Funeral services for Lillian Rollins of Rushford, MN will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 23 at Rushford Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Grove City Cemetery in Rushford. Hoff Funeral Homes is handling the arrangements.

Lillian, 79, died Sunday, April 20, 2003 at her home.

Lillian Rollins was born February 15, 1924 in Rushford, the daughter of Ludvig and Amanda (Berland) Fossum. She graduated from Rushford High School in 1943.

On April 22, 1945 she married Donald Rollins in El Paso, TX. She lived in California where she worked for Lockheed as a riveter. She moved with her family to Chester for 30 years where she worked as a postal clerk. They moved back to Rushford in 1987.

She is survived by two sons: Terry of Decorah and Greg of LeRoy, MN; one daughter: Pat Volkman of Rushford; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister: Helen Ebner of Sun City, CA.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband Donald in July of 1991; one grandson; and one brother: Conrad.


Lilly Hove

Funeral services for Lilly Hove were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 14 at First Lutheran church in Cresco with Rev. Gary K. Lee and Intern Blaine MacNeil officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Brad Hove, Brian Hove, Bruce Hove, Todd Hove, Rick Ravens, and Arlyn Skoda. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Lilly, 102, died Friday, April 11, 2003 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Lilly Mae Hove was born November 24, 1900 near Lime Springs, the daughter of Iver and Marie (Johnson) Benson. She was confirmed in the Christian faith at Orleans Lutheran Church near Ridgeway. She was a graduate of Valders School of Business in Decorah.

On April 2, 1925 she married Paul T. Hove. They farmed in the Washington Prairie area until they moved to Calmar in 1938. They settled in Cresco in 1953. She owned and operated the Rose Shop until she retired in 1986.

She is survived by one son: Wayne of Kankakee, IL; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Lilly was preceded in death by her husband; two sons: Paul and Bruce; one daughter: Robyn Frank; one grandson; her parents; three sisters: Blanche Iverson, Pearl Cooke, and Rose Henderson; and two brothers: Victor and Trueman.


Kathleen Leibold

Funeral services for Kathleen Leibold of Fort Atkinson were held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16 at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson. Pallbearers were: Carl Schmitt, Peter Schmitt, Joe Schmitt, and Jay Schwamman. Balik-Schluter Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Kathleen, 59, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah following a long illness.

Kathleen Mary Leibold was born January 19, 1944 in Decorah, the daughter of Hugo and Margaret (Kupka) Leibold. She lived at home with her parents until 1978 and then went to the Riverview Care Facility. Kathleen enjoyed living at the Care Facility.

She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by three sisters: Florence Johnson of West Union, Judy Zweibohmer of Ridgeway, and Jeanne Moscoso of Brier, WA; half-sister: Helen Becker of Hiawatha; and half-brother: Edmund Leibold of Cresco.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and half-brother: Henry Leibold.


Wilma Prochaska

Funeral services for Wilma Prochaska of Protivin were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Her three children placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Mike Prochaska, Melissa (Prochaska) Spensley, Sandra Prochaska, Kari Prochaska, Mark Haines, and Brandon Haines. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Wilma, 87, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco of natural causes.

Wilma A. Prochaska was born October 9, 1915 next door to her current home in Protivin, the only child of William J. and Emma (Lentz) Kalishek. She attended school in Protivin and graduated from Rudolphinium High School, in 1932.

On June 8, 1936 she married her classmate, Joseph R. Prochaska at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They owned and operated a Northeast Iowa Restaurant and Tavern in Protivin for over 60 years.

She was a member of the Protivin Senior Citizens and Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

She enjoyed gardening, her card clubs, and her flowers.

She is survived by two sons: Jim of Dubuque and Bill of Fayette; one daughter: Mary Prochaska-Richardson of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Joe on June 13, 2001; one daughter: Jane Prochaska-Haines; and her parents.
