Margaret M. Kolar

Funeral services for Margaret M. Kolar, 83, of Calmar were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 1997, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Rev. Robert Hirsch officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery with French Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died January 31, 1997, at Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah after a long illness.

Margaret Schneberger was born November 4, 1913, in Calmar, the daughter of John and Anna (Kuhn) Schneberger. She attended Calmar Parochial School.

She was united in marriage on September 8, 1947, to William Kolar at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

She spent her entire life in the Calmar area and was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sisters, twin Marie Manderfield of Decorah; and Agnes Vachta of Protivin.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and four brothers, William, Alf, Matt, and Hugo, who died in infancy.


Herman William Miller

Funeral services for Herman William Miller of Clinton, UT, formerly of Lime Springs, were held February 1, 1997, in Clinton, UT, with military rites.

He died February 1, 1997, at his home of an extended illness.

Herman William Miller was born December 16, 1926, in Lime Springs, the son of Bert and Frances Ruesink Miller.

He married Marilyn Ida Peter in July of 1949 and were later divorced.

On July 24, 1971, he married Wanda A. Luoma in Layton, UT.

Herman was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. 7th Army.

Throughout his life, he had worked as a truck driver and had later retired from Farmers grain.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, David of Clearfield, UT; Dean of West Point, UT; and Dennis of Syracuse, UT; two step-sons, Thomas Thornton, Oklahoma City, OK; and Joseph Luoma of Clinton, UT; one step-daughter, Anne Marie St. John of Clinton, UT; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold of Anchorage, AK; and one sister, Goldie of Colo, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alvin Miller.


Mable Cameron

Funeral services for Mabel Cameron, 97, of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 1997, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Pastor Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

She died on Wednesday, January 29, 1997, at Howard County Hospital.

Mabel Josephine Wentworth Cameron was born January 11, 1900, in Cresco, the daughter of Sherman P and Louisa (Hunter) Wentworth. She attended school in Cresco. After graduation from high school she taught in a rural school near West Union.

She was united in marriage to William Ishman on January 1, 1920, and they farmed near Auburn until his death in 1946.

Later Mabel moved back to Cresco and on July 2, 1960, she married Scott Cameron. In recent years they were both residents of the Cresco Care Center.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Ishman of Cresco and Dale Ishman of Elkader; one daughter, Joyce Burt of Cresco; 13 grand-children; 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death her husbands, William and Scott; one son, Eldon; one daughter, Darlene; one grandaughter; three sisters, Millie, Doris and Betty; and one brother, Kenneth.


Stephen Squires

Stephen J. Squires, 44, died in Denver, CO, on January 29, 1997.

He was born December 13, 1952, at Astoria, WA.

Stephen graduated from Crestwood High School in 1971.

Survivors include his parents, Edwin and Bette Squires of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Vincent and his grandparents.

No services will be held at this time. Lindstrom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Doris Wenthold

Funeral services for Doris Wenthold, 82, of Decorah, were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 1997, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah. Rev. Gary Krapfl officiated. Interment was in St. Agnes Cemetery-Plymouth Rock with French & Balik Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died February 1, 1997, in Waterloo of a short illness.

Doris Marie Gossman was born September 19, 1914, in Plymouth Rock, the daughter of John and Mary Elizabeth (McCabe) Gossman.

She was united in marriage June 17, 1935, to Andrew Wenthold at St. Agnes Church in Plymouth Rock.

Doris lived in Winneshiek County all her life. She farmed with her husband until retiring in Decorah. She was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Daryl of Evansdale; Gailen of Canton; two daughters, Karen Snell and Maribeth Rover, both of Waterloo; and two sisters, Vivian Carolan and Mildred Jennisch, both of Decorah.

She was preceded in death by one child, Carroll, who died in infancy; and her husband.


Blanche B. Erickson

Funeral services for Blanche B. Erickson, 85, of Waukon were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 1997, at Henrytown Lutheran Church. Pastor Gary Lee officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, February 4, 1997, at her home in Waukon.

Blanche B. Erickson was born October 16, 1911, the daughter of Andrew and Martha (Benson) Erickson on a farmstead just north of Hesper, IA, on the Minnesota/Iowa line. She was baptized in Hesper and later confirmed at the Blackhammer Lutheran Church, north of Spring Grove, MN. She attended rural schools.

On March 29, 1933, Blanche was united in marriage to Alfred O. Erickson of rural Canton, MN. They spent the early years of their marriage dairy farming. In 1944, they moved to Mabel, MN. In 1960, they moved to Cresco. Four years after her husbands death she moved to Waukon.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Nordheim of Decorah; three sons, Gale of Rochester; Gerald of Stewartville; and Robert of Waukon; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Adrian; one sister, Esther Fry; and three brothers, Grant, Ernest and Arnold Erickson.


Jerry Brown

Funeral services for Jerry Brown of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 1997, at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at Howard County Hospital.

Jerald Allen Brown was born July 17, 1941, in Winneshiek County, the son of Brayton B. and Esther I. (Trouten) Brown. He attended school in Cresco, then he moved to the west coast where he spent most of his adult life, returning to Cresco in 1988.

Survivors include two sons, Seth and Rhett Brown; one grandson; and one brother, Lyle Brown of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


Louis Milota

Funeral services for Louis Milota were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 10, at the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Allen M. Schmitt officiated. Conway Funeral Home in Cresco was in charge of arrangements.

Louis J. Milota, 95, died Thurday, February 6, 1997, at the Colonial Manor Mursing Home in Elma.

Louis Joseph Milota was born near Protivin on July 15, 1901, the son of Albert and Marie Martinck Milota. He attended the rural school.

On November 23, 1927, he married Adela Riha at the Holy Trinity Church. The became the parents of two sons. In 1937 Adela died. On September 25, 1940 he married Agnes Vokaty at the Holy Trinity Church.

Louis farmed until 1945 and then went to work for the Oliver Corporation at Chrales City working in the foundry until he retired in 1966.

He is survivied by his wife, AGnes, in the Colonial Manor at Elma; three sons, Walter of Des Moines, Cyril of Waterloo and Ron of Nora Springs; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rose Hrdlicka of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; two step sons, Francis and Cletus Vokaty; one great-granddaughter; his parents; and two brothers, Albert and James Milota.


Eugene Woolorth

Funeral services for Eugene Woolworth, 51, of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 10, 1997, at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Rev. Mark Hunsberger officiated. Interment was in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Military rites were conducted by the Cresco VFW and American Legion Posts.

He died at his home in Cresco on Thursday, February 6, 1997.

Eugene was born January 28, 1946, in Osage, the son of Chauncey and Williamine Woolworth. They moved to Riceville in 1954 where Eugene graduated from high school in 1964.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict from 1966 to 1968, and following that he served four years in the Naval Reserves.

Eugene was united in marriage to Barbara Duryee in 1974.

He worked at the Riceville Texaco for ten years and for the Donaldson Company in Cresco.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Cresco; his children, Chris, Sheri and Cynthia, all of Cresco; his mother; two sisters, Alice Abbott of Ridgeway; Coleen Fluhrer of Charles City; and one brother, Robert Woolworth of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his father.


Leonard Louis Tupy

Funeral services for Leonard Louis Tupy of Mission, TX, formerly of Protivin, were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission, TX. A second visitation at Balik Funeral Home in Spillville and a memorial mass service will be held at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin at a later date.

He died February 7, 1997, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital after a lingering illness.

Leonard Tupy was born March 25, 1908, in Sumner Township, IA, to Charles and Elizabeth (Novak) Tupy. He attended the local school, The Holy Trinity School and business school in Austin, MN

On November 25, 1935, he married Evelyn (Bouska) Tupy at Holy Trinity Church. He was a dairy farmer, an insurance salesman and adjuster, a director of the Bohemian Mutual Insurance Company for 45 years.

He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and a lifetime member of the Catholic Workman.

In October 1976, he and Evelyn began to annually live in Benisen Grove Trailer Park near Mission, TX, for the winter season.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Kay C. Moudry-Munns of Miami, FL; Leon C. Tupy of Boulder, CO; and Jean Hemesath of Louisville, KY; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Charles, Edward, Arthur, Victor, Klement; three sisters, Albina Ondrachek, Regina Holub, Adella Liebold; and one granddaughter.


James L. Salisbury

Funeral services for James L. Salisbury, 69, of Evansdale, were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 1997, at Garden View Chapel.

He died at his home on Thursday, February 6, 1997, of cancer.

James Salisbury was born August 1, 1927, in Cresco, the son of Herbert J. and Florence Mingus Salisbury.

He married Karen Lea Taft on August 20, 1949 in Cresco.

James had been employed by Rath Packing Company for 19 years, retiring in 1970.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Evansdale; his son, Myron Salisbury of Grover City, CA; three daughters, Marsha DeWiese, Vicky Bolin and Rhonda Hoffman, all of Waterloo; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor Salisbury and Mary Lou Salisbury, both of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Salisbury; and three brothers, Edwin, Herbert and his twin, Gene.


August John Bouska

Funeral services for August John Bouska of New Hampton, formerly of Protivin, were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Rev. Allen Schmitt officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery with Larkin-Martin & Hugeback Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Saturday, February 8, 1997, in New Hampton.

August was born August 28, 1916, in Protivin, the son of Theodore and Christina (Jirak) Bouska. He attended school in Protivin.

He was a resident of the Heritage Residence in New Hampton.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Marie Milam of Denton, TX; Christina Ann Luhman of Norfolk, VA; one son, August John Barta of Houston, TX; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Louis Bouska; and two sisters, Bernice Watts and Genevieve Gorman.


Gabriella Shimek

Funeral services for Gabriella Shimek were held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco with the Rev. Michael C. Fitzgerald officiating. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Lourdes. Conway Funeral Home in Cresco was in charge of arrangements.

Gabriella, 89, died Saturday, February 8, 1997, at the Cresco Care Center.

Gabriella W. Shimek was born in Howard County near Lourdes on September 1, 1907 the daughter of Wenzel and Mary Urban Shimek. She was educated in the country school and moved to Cresco in 1948.

Gabriella held various jobs over the years including caring for her parents in their later years.

She was a member of the Assumption Church and the Altar and Rosary Scoiety in Cresco.

She is survivied by two sisters, Pelagia Shimek of Decorah and Ursula Lenard of Lake City, MN.

She was preceded in death by her jparents, one brother, Paul J. Shimek and one sister, Gretrude Wendel.


Reinhart Mans

Funeral services for Reinhart Mans, 82, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 13 at the Immacualte Conception Church in Riceville. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The Rev. John Moser will officiate. Visitation will be at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 6:30 p.m.

Reinhart died Sunday, February 9, 1997, at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Reinhart Lawrence Mans was born May 7, 1914 in Nicollet, MN, the son of Susanna Sanem Mans and John B. Mans. He graduated from Mankato High School and Mankato State College. He began work as a railroad agent and telegrapher in 1940 and continued until his retirement in1976.

On June 10, 1944 he married Pauline Bienieck in Farmington, MN. They came to Riceville in 1945.

Reinhart was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4308 in Osage and he served terms on the City Countil and the Riceville Board of Education.

Surviviors include his wife, Pauline; and three sons, John of Riceville, Dennis of Maquoketa and Tom of Omaha, NE.

He was preceded in detah by one grandson, his parents .


Sadie J. Williams

Funeral services for Sadie J. Williams, 87, of Lime Springs were held Thursday, February 13, 1997 at Lime Springs United Methodist Church. Pastor Robert Holdorf officiated. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She died Monday, February 10, 1997, at the Cresco Care Center. Death was the result of numerous strokes and the resulting decline in health over the last several years.

Sadie Janet Williams was born February 16, 1909, near York in Fillmore County, MN, the daughter of Ole and Bertha (Hovey) Austin. She received her education at Saetersdal Lutheran Church and the rural public school.

She married Harlan Williams on January 2, 1935. They lived on a farm northeast of Lime Springs until they retired and moved to the town of Lime Springs in 1974.

She was a lifetime and active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lime Springs and joined the United Methodist Church following the closure of the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Harlene Frohling of Houston, TX; two grandchildren; one step-grandson; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Of the original Austin family, two sisters, Goldie Hoopman of Austin and Georgia Morem of Spring Valley survive.

Preceding her in death were her husband; an infant son; one granddaughter; her parents; five brothers; and two sisters.


Jessie Flatland

Funeral services for Jesse Flatland will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with the Rev. Bruce Hobert officiating. Interment will be in the Fremont Lutheran Cemetery, rural Cresco, with military honors. Lindstrom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jesse died at the Howard County Hospital February 10, 1997, at the age of 59.

Jesse D. Flatland was born February 12, 1937, in Winneshiek County, IA, the son of H. Albert and Norma Engen Flatland. He went to school in Madison Township and also at the Canton Schools. Jesse spent eight years in the Air Force, he worked as a farm laborer, as a mechanic and did custom fencing, and for the last five years he worked at Luther College as a custodian.

On September 25, 1965 Jesse married Margaret Drake.

Jesse was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was the current commander of the American Legion Post of Cresco.

Jesse is survivied by his wife, Margaret of Cresco; three children, Denise Rohm of Coralville, DEan of Hampshire, IL, and Dawn at home in Cresco; three grandchldren; four sisters, Naomi Gossman of Cresco, Eldie Peterson of Paso Robles, CA, Yvonne Krogstad of Spring Grove, MN, and Sue Fontes of Mission Viejo, CA; and one brother, Kenneth of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


Dorothy C. Baker

Funeral services for Dorothy C. Baker of Decorah were held February 19, 1997, at First United Methodist Church in Decorah. Rev. James S. Dale officiated. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs with French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah in charge of arrangements.

She died February 14, 1997, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Dorothy Cleone (Kintz) Baker was born on May 22, 1918, at rural Bonair, IA, the daughter of Delbert Ilyf and Mamie (Clark) Kintz.

She grew up around Bonair and graduated from high school at Lime Springs.

Dorothy married Robert S. Baker on May 11, 1941, at the parsonage of the United Methodist Church of Ridgeway.

Dorothy and Robert lived their entire married life on the Baker home farm west of Decorah.

She was a long-time member of the Wayside Garden Club and a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Decorah.

On August 8, 1996, due to declining health, she went to live at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Sharon Moen of Raleigh, NC; and Karon Hovey of Ridgeway; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Beulah Scott; Lillian Stockdale; Rachel Johnston; and Edna Sature; and three brothers, Basil Kintz; Harry Kintz; and Clark Kintz.


Ester J. Henkes

Funeral services for Esther J. Henkes, 90, of Cresco, were held at noon Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at St. Joseph Church in Cresco. Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

She died Saturday, February 15, 1997, of natural causes at Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Esther J. (Herold) Henkes was born in Ionia, IA, on August 29, 1906, the daughter of Michael and Sophia (Steinmetz) Herold. She was the youngest of 13 children. She graduated from Assumption High School in Cresco.

Esther lived in South Dakota and Minnesota before returning to Iowa.

She married Harry L. Henkes on November 1, 1929, in Carroll, IA. The lived and farmed in the Cresco area for over 40 years before retiring to the town of Cresco in 1972.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Melvin and Harold Henkes of Cresco; three daughters, Lea Henkes, FSPA, (Alive) of Cresco; Verna Dralle and Charlotte Henkes of Wabasha, MN; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley R. Weis; her parents; brothers, Alfred, Ben Karl, Victor, Arnold, Leo and Herman; and sisters Elizabeth Herold, OSF, (Clara), Mae, Louise and Gertrude Herold, and Leona Drilling.


Orre Lizabeth Johnson

Funeral services for Orre Lizabeth Johnson, 88, of Cresco will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at Jerico Lutheran Church of rural New Hampton. The Pastor Kent Dethlefsen will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died Monday, February 17, 1997, at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco after a lingering illness.

Orre Lizabeth Johnson was born January 30, 1909, in Howard County the daughter of Ole and Anna (Olson) Johnson. She attended the rural schools and was baptized and confirmed at the Jericao Lutheran Church.

She was married to Alfred T. Johnson on March 21, 1935, at the Saude parsonage. They farmed in the Howard and Chickasaw County area throughout their married life.

In 1982 Orre moved to Cresco with her son, Lowell, where she resided until entering the Evans Memorial Home five weeks ago.

She was active in the Jerico Ladies Aid and the Jerico-Saude Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Orin and Lowell, both of Cresco; one grandson; and one sister, Alice Johnson of New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four brothers, Joe, Sjur, Severt and Alvie; six sisters, Bessie Amman, Lena Fauberg, Martha Moses, Clara Hereid, Anna Paulson and Gertrude Johnson.


Nancy C. Young

Funeral services for Nancy C. Young, 57, of Liberty, MO, formerly of New Hartford, IA, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 1997, at New Hartford United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in New Hartford Cemetery.

She died Monday, February 17, 1997, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, MO.

Nancy was born May 2, 1939, in Charles City, IA, the daughter of Frank C. and Emily Jane Wright.

She married Richard E. "Dick" Young on October 29, 1960. They lived in New Hartford, IA, for more than 20 years before they moved to Liberty in 1988.

She was a member of Friends of James Farm and was a Liberty Hospital Auxiliary volunteer for eight years. Also she was a member of New Hartford United Methodist Church and wa a former volunteer at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Scott M. Young of Pine Bluff, AR; and Steve E. Young of New Hartford, IA; and one granddaughter.


Kermit "Dale" Melver Jr.

Funeral services for Kermit "Dale" Melver, Jr., 49, of Shell Rock, were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 21, 1997, at First Lutheran Church. Pastor Gary K. Lee and Intern Erik Lindell officiated. Spring Interment will be in New Oregon Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

He died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on February 18, 1997.

Kermit "Dale" Melver, Jr. was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, on January 20, 1948, the son of Kermit and Mary (Hoskinson) Melver. He attended grade school in Cresco and later finished his high school education and complege a college bible study course.

In 1969 his family moved to Shell Rock where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Mary Stevenson of Shell Rock; and Pat Melver of Waverly.


Sadie J. Williams

Sadie J. Williams, 87, of Lime Springs, died at the Cresco Care Center on February 19, 1997, in Cresco. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs with spring interment in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, and one hour before services at the church.


Malcolm O. Rue

Funeral services for Malcolm O. Rue, 86, of Ridgeway, were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 1997, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. Rev. Phillip Olson and Ginny Olson, Associate in Ministry officiated. Interment was in Lincoln Cemetery with Fjelstul Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Saturday, February 22, 1997, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, IA.

Malcolm O. Rue was born September 3, 1910, in Ridgeway, the son of Ole O. and Oline (Brekke) Rue. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1928 and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA.

He married Adelaide Halvorson who later died in August, 1963. On October 8, 1968, he married Arlene Appel Wemark in Kensett, IA.

He worked at Farmers State Bank in Ridgeway for more than 50 years. He was vice president and also a real estate agent and insurance agent for the bank, and was on the bank's Board of Directors.

Malcolm was active in the community of Ridgeway. He was Mayor of Ridgeway, served as Fire Chief, Scout Leader and he was on the School Board.

He was a member of Elks Lodge and Sons of Norway in Decorah; Lincoln and Peace Lutheran Churches, and on the building committee, president of church council, and was treasurer for many years.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Alan of Sequim, WA; Dennis of Billings, MT; Dean of Madison, WI; and Gary of Boulder, CO; two daughters, Carmen Peckham of Eagan, MN; and Susan Miller of Stewartville, MN; one step-son, Vince Wemark of Ridgeway; three step-daughters, Elaine Peterson of Grand Junction, CO; Dianne Smith of Marion, IA; and Deb Buelow of Fairfield, IA; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Irene Aschim of Ridgeway; Helen Anderson of Decorah; Lila Dewey of Kansas City, MO; and Betty Nelson of Plano, TX; and two brothers, Loren Rue of Ridgeway; and Roger Rue of St. Louis, MO.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Adelaide; one daughter, Beverly Rue; one step-son, Wayne Smith; one grandson; and his parents.


Dale Huff

Funeral services for Dale Huff, 53, of rural Harmony, MN were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 1997, at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Rev. Jon Sorum will officiate. Lindstrom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He died at his home on Sunday, February 23, 1997.

Dale Huff was born May 9, 1943, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Howard and Doris (Forde) Huff. He graduated from high school and served in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict.

He was united in marriage to Laurene Dybvik in 1969 and they were later divorced. He was reunited in marriage to Janice Huinker Hackman on January 10, 1992.

Dale was an electrical supervisor at the Kitchens of Sara Lee in New Hampton, IA, since 1972.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; two daughters, Shari Chesmore of Cresco; and Lori Landswerk of Clarksville, TN; one step-daughter, Shannon Hackman of Decorah; one step-son, Chad Hackman of Ames, IA; one grandson; one sister, Jackie White of Dubuque; and two brothers, Jay McDonald of Dubuque; and Kevin McDonald of Thornton, CO.

He was preceded in death by two sons; and his parents.


Jeannette "Peggy" Ursie

Private funeral services were held for Jeannette "Peggy" Ursie, 83, of Merced, CA. Interment was in Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery in Santa Rosa, CA, with The Neptune Society of Northern California in charge of arrangements.

She died February 24, 1997, in Merced, CA.


Marcella E. Smorstad

Funeral services for Marcella E. Smorstad, 73, of Waterloo, were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 3, 1997, at The Kearns-Huisman-Schumacher Chapel On Kimball. Interment was in Garden of Memories Cemetery with The Kearns-Huisman-Schumacher Cha-pel On Kimball in charge of arrangements.

She died Thursday, February 27, 1997, at Ravenwood Health Care Center of cancer.

Marcella E. Smorstad was born March 18, 1923, in Decorah the daughter of Amund of Olga Holvorson Blekeberg.

She married Orville H. Smorstad on October 28, 1951, in Ridgeway. She was a machinist at Chamberlains Manufacturing.

She is survived by two brothers, Oren and Wallace Blekeberg of Ridgeway.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and one sister, Hazel Herman.


Theodore H. Balk

Funeral services for Theodore H. "Ted" Balk, 81, of Ossian, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 3, 1997, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Rev. Richard Kuhn officiated. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery with Schmitz Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died of natural causes Thursday, February 27, 1997, at his home in Ossian.

Theodore H. Balk was born September 13, 1915, in Eden, IA, the son of Carl and Catherine (Langreck) Balk. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke's Parish in St. Lucas and attended St. Lucas School.

He married Leona Bodensteine on March 30, 1937, at St. Francis de Sales Church. They farmed in the Ossian and Castalia areas until they moved into Ossian in 1973. He also worked for several area sale barns.

Ted was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #2073, and Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Edna Borlaug of Protivin; Bernice Holthaus of West Union; Phillis Kapler of Waverly; Marilyn Winger of Decorah; Betty Hebrink of Cresco; three sons, Roger Balk of Decorah; David Balk of Waterloo; and Joe Balk of Frankville; 25 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elaine Schwickerath; one son, Carroll Balk; his parents; two brothers,m Tony and Leonard Balk; four sisters, Agnes Bodensteiner; Clara Balk; Helen Reisner; and Mathilda Hlubek.


Susan Herold

Funeral services for Susan Herold, 86, of Cresco, were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco with the Rev. Michael C. Fitzgerald officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Conway Funeral Home in Cresco was in charge of arrangements.

Susan died Friday, February 28, 1997, at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN.

Susan Margaret Herold was born March 8, 1910 in Kila, MT, the daughter of William and Margaret Morschauser Coughlin. She grew up on the Coughlin farm southwest of Cresco and graduated from Cresco High School in 1929 with her teaching certificate. She attended the University of Minnesota for one year.

On November 29, 1941, she married Wilfred A. Herold. Susan and her husband farmed for many years. She was a teacher in area country schools for 13 years and later taught at St. Joseph's School in Cresco and Holy Trinity School in Protivin. Susan was a 4-H leader for the Howard Center Stars and a member of the Vernon Springs Twp. Election Board for many years.

She is survivied by four sons, Steve J. of Northfield, MN, Will D. and John E., both of Farmington, MN, and Richard of Trempealeau, WI; one daughter, Margaret S. of Rosemount, MN; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers, William, J.E. "Eddie" and Daniel Coughlin; and one sister, Helen Hewitt.


Caroline Rainy

Memorial services for Caroline Rainy were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, at the United Methodist Church in Elma the ther REv. Ray Howland, REv. John Harpel and Rev. Barbara Wills presideing. Inurnment was in the Howard Cemetery at Elma. Caroline, 76, died Friday, February 14, 1997, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma.

Caroline was born November 16, 1920 in Atlanta, GA, the daughter of Cornelius and Caroline Harmon AShely. She was a lab technician prior to meeting CCurtis W. Rainy. On August 21, 1950 they were united in marriage at Junaleski, NC. They moved to Elma in 1954.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Elma and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Curtis W. Rainy; one son, Charles of Rochester, MN; one daughter, chris Lipscombe of Gulfport, MS; four grandchildren; and one sister, Harriet Baylor of Gulfport, MS.

She was preceded in death by her parents.


Wallace Walker

Funeral services for Wallace Walker were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with the Rev. Gary K. Lee and Intern Erik Lindell officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wallace died at the Evans Memorial Home January 17, 1997, at the age of 75.

Wallace Reed Walker was born June 27, 1921, in Hammond, WI, the son of Howard and Bertha (Hovey) Walker. After farming in Wisconsin for several years the family returned to the Howard County area in 1925 and continued farming. Wally attended the rural schools of Howard County and graduated from Cresco High School. From this time he took an active role in the family farming operation until 1976 when the farming operation was discontinued due to the death of his brother Gerald. He went to work in the same year for the United Shippers Cooperative in Cresco until he retired in 1986.

He was an active member of First Lutheran Church and served on the church council and various other committees.

He is survived by his brother, William Walker of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerald and Howard; and two sisters, Dorothy Stahl and Darleen Lewis.


Ardis Munson

Funeral services for Ardis Munson were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 29, at First Lutheran Church in Cresco. The Rev. Gary K. Lee and Intern Erik Lindell officiatied. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Ardis became ill January 1 and was hospitalized in McAllen where she died January 14, 1997.

Ardis Genevieve Munson was born November 5, 1912, the daugher of J. J. and Lulu (Grinde) Johnson in Howard County. She graduated from Cresco High School and completed the normal school training whil in high school Her first teaching position was north of Cresco. She then took a teaching position at Suade.

On January 28, 1935, she married Halvor Munson.

Ardis returned to school, both as a teacher and a student and graduated from Luther College Magna Cum Laude in 1966. She taught in the Crestwood School System until retired in 1977.

She is survivied by her children; David of Mineapolis, MN; Mary Powers of Camano Island, WA, Carol Graham of Gainsville, FL, and Jann Schmitz ofBettendorf; 12 grandchldren; five great-grandchildren; and brothers, NortonJohnson of Harmony,MN, Keith Johnson of Waupun, WI; and sisters, Margueriete Grover of Cresco and Arlene Brainerd of Anamosa

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Carol; and brothers, George and Ivor.


Harold J. Nichols

Funeral services for Harold J. Nichols, of Ames, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 27, 1997, at the First Evangelical Free Church, 2008 24th Street in Ames. Interment will be in the ISU Cemetery with Adams Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Saturday, February 22, 1997, of respiratory failure at Mary Greeley Memorial Hospital in Ames.

Harold J. Nichols was born March 22, 1917, in Cresco, the son of Harold and Gladys (Tillson) Nichols. He graduated from Cresco High School, then attended the University of Michigan were he became a national collegiate champion in wrestling in 1939.

He enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II as a civilian physical education instructor. The air force subsequently inducted the civilians who had enlisted.

Harold was united in marriage to Ruth McCain on March 13, 1945, in Clarksdale, MS.

He received his Mastors Degree from the University of Illinois and his PhD degree from the University of Michigan. In September of 1946 he began teaching and coaching at Arkansas State College in Jones-boro, AR. On August 15, 1953, Harold was hired as wrestling coach of Iowa State College in Ames.

Harold was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church of Ames, the US Air Force Asociation, the American Legion, Post #37 and the Order of the Knoll.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Harold Nichols of Kearney, NE; and Bill Nichols of Ames; two brothers, Donald H. Nichols of LaGrange, IL; and Char-les W. Nichols of Edina, MN; five grandchildren and two step-grand-children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.


Lyle Houdek

Services held for Lyle Houdek, 37 of Caledonia, Mn at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 1997, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caledonia. Rev. Donald Schmitz officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Caledonia with McCormick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He died Monday, February 24, 1997, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester from complications with cancer.

Lyle was born on May 14, 1959, in Cresco the son of Lyle C. and Geneva (Reicks) Houdek. He attended the Caledonia High School.

He married Debra Schulze on June 6, 1981, in Caledonia.

Lyle was a heavy equipment operator for the Patterson Quarries Division of Mathy Construction Company.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Local 49ers.

Survivors include his wife, Debra; two children, Mark and Megan; his father, Lyle C. of Mauston, WI; three brothers, James; Wayne; and Darrel, all of Caledonia; four sisters, Linda Anderson of Winona, MN; Sharon Svoboda of Stewartville; Elaine Stika of Cresco; and Carol Houdek of Worthingon, MN; and paternal grandmother, Mayme Houdek of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his mother.


Jennie McCameron

Services for Jennie McCameron, 88, of Windsor Heights, IA, were held in Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, IA, with Caldwell-Raddatz of Urbandale in charge of arrangements. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

She died Tuesday, February 25, 1997, at Urbandale Rehabilitation and Care Center of congestive heart failure.

Jennie McCameron was born in Kamrar, IA, March 19, 1908.

She lived in Cresco for 33 years before moving to Windsor Heights. She was an active member of the Methodist Church in Cresco. A 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her husband, Fred, operated the Standard Oil Bulk Agency for 33 years in Cresco.

Survivors include her husband, Fred of Windsor Heights, IA; three daughters, Patricia Rose of Sierra Madre, CA; Nola Nealey of Clive, IA; and Cindy Lamson of West Des Moines, IA; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Klaver of Webster City, IA; and one sister, Marie Read of Russellville, AR.


Kermit "Dale" Melver

Kermit "Dale" Melver, Jr., 49, of Shell Rock, were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 21, 1997, at First Lutheran Church. Pastor Gary K. Lee and Intern Erik Lindell officiated. Spring Internment will be in New Oregon Cemetery with Lindstrom Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

He died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on February 18, 1997.

Kermit "Dale" Melver, Jr. was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, on January 20, 1948, the son of Kermit and Mary (Hoskinson) Melver. He attended grade school in Cresco and later finished his high school education and complege a college bible study course.

In 1969 his family moved to Shell Rock where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Mary Stevenson of Shell Rock; and Pat Melver of Waverly.


Wayne Weinberg

Memorial services were held for Wayne Weinberg of Clarksville, Thursday, Februray 27, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly with the Rev. Jim Miller and Rev. Robert Ament officiating. Internment will be held at a later date in Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. The Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville was in charge of arrangements. He died at the Community Nursing in Clarksville on February 24, 1997, of natural causes at the age of 88.

Wayne William WEinberg was born March 23, 1908, the son of Henry J. and Louise Norddman Weinberg. He graduated in Cedar Falls. He was employed at the Butler County State BAnk at Clarksville for two years and then was employed by his father at Weinberg-Frudden Lumber Co. at Clarksville, which he later owned and operated until his retirement in 1968.

On October 28, 1929, he married Cecelia Dostal in the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and one sister.
