Edna E. Putney

Edna E. Putney, 92, of 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, formerly of 507 6th Ave., Charles City, died Wednesday evening (Sept. 1, 2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with Rev. Carl Ries presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. A rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. with the scripture wake service to follow at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Edna Emma Putney was born Aug. 23, 1912, in Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Cerwinske) Griffin. She received her education at IC school in Charles City. On Oct. 14, 1931, Edna was united in marriage to Hiram R. Putney at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.

Edna was employed as a cook at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital for 23 years, until retiring in 1982. Edna was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, the ministry praise, the Sacred Heart Guild and St. Jude's church circle. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary of which she was a life member, the Women of the Moose, the Heritage Club and the Senior Center all in Charles City and the Blue Star Mothers.

Edna enjoyed caring for her family. She liked to bake homemade breads and noodles, preparing salmon soup and oyster soup. She was an avid BINGO Player. Edna loved to travel and through her involvement in the Heritage Club had the opportunity to travel to Ireland, Alaska, Hawaii and Las Vegas, Nevada. Edna liked to socialize and be around people. Edna was strong and devoted to her faith attending mass on a daily basis when she was able. Her family recalls in earlier years the special times when the family gathered at her home for Sunday dinners and playing cards.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Edna's life are her children, Ruth Ann (Robert) Lyman of Marshalltown; Hiram "Hi Joe" (Judy) Putney of Charles City; Vinton "Vince" (Ginger) Putney of Moreland, GA; Rose (Duane) Becker of Cassellberry, FL and Edward (Linda) Putney of Forest City; three daughters-in-law, Dorothy Putney and Victoria Putney, both of Charles City and Susan Byrne of Boone; twenty five Grandchildren; 38 Great Grandchildren and two Great Great Grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Grace Griffin of Mason City.

Edna is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hiram R. Putney on May 6, 1967; three sons, Richard, Alfred and LeRoy Putney; three sisters, Ruth Griffin, Mary Hall and Ruby Hall and two brothers, Alfred and Edward Griffin.


Fay Wilcox

Fay Wilcox, 88, a resident of One Crestview Lane, Charles City, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at her home.

Funeral services for Fay Wilcox will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Phil Corr, pastor of the First Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Fay Aileen Carter Wilcox was born Aug. 28, 1916, in Floyd County, the daughter of Lloyd and Lela (Bucknell) Carter. She graduated from the Charles City High School. On Nov. 22, 1938, she was united in marriage to Keith Wilcox at the Little Brown Church. They lived all of their lives in Charles City. Keith died on April 12, 1984. Fay was a member of the First Congregational Church. Her interests included serving as a Girl Scout leader and enjoying the outdoors.

Living family members include two daughters, Kathy (Colin) Sandell of Cedarburg, WI, and Jenny Wilcox of Lone Tree; four grandchildren, Mackenzie Kile, Michael J. Sobolik, and Kevin and Sean Sandell; a great granddaughter, Madison Sobolik; and a brother, Dean Carter of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Max Carter; and an aunt, Bertha Carter.

Daniel Edward Smith

SOUTH ELGIN, Ill. - Daniel Edward Smith Sr., 84, died Monday evening, August 30, 2004 at Towerhill Nursing Home in South Elgin, Ill. He was born in Chicago, Ill. on December 27, 1919.

Daniel is survived by his wife Penelope Smith of St Charles, Ill.; their four children: Daniel E. Jr. (Diane) Smith of Plano, Ill., Robert C. Smith of Minneapolis, Minn., Penny Marie (Joel) Gray of Charles City, and Timothy R. (Suzanne) Smith of Elburn, Ill. There are 4 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren.

Daniel served as an Army medic in World War II and worked for Walgreens as a pharmacist in Illinois for over 25 years. He was a partner at Burger Drugs in St Charles, Ill. until retirement.

A devoted father and husband, Daniel is remembered as an avid golfer, a colorful, gregarious man, and self described "people person."

Ethel Marie Lantz

NASHUA - Ethel Marie Lantz, 83, of Osage, formerly of Nashua, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 2, 2004, at the Mitchell County Regional Medical Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be today, Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua at 10:30 a.m. Visitation was Monday, September 6, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. and will be from 9 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Nashua.

Ethel is survived by two sons: James D. (Linda) Lantz, of Rudd, and Francis B. (Carolyn) Lantz, of Charles City; eight grandchildren: Lisa Sinnwell, Marc and Jared Lantz; Frank, Jason, Chad, Daniel and Paul Lantz; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Leona Carter, both of Nashua; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Riggs of Charles City and Irma Stufflebeam, of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl R. Lantz, on October 14, 1987; her parents and one brother, William Riggs.

Ethel Marie Lantz was born October 27, 1920 in Nashua, the daughter of Ivan B. and Pearl F. (Smith) Riggs. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1937 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for two years, earning her teachers certificate. Ethel taught school for the next 10 years.

She was united in marriage to Earl Lantz on May 24, 1952 in Austin, Minn. They made their home in Nashua where their two sons were born. Ethel moved to Charles City in 2001, and had recently moved to the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Ethel was a member of Nashua United Methodist Church and the Willing Workers Club. She loved music and taught piano lessons to a number of children. She made sure all her grandchildren had an appreciation of music. She will be happily remembered for her sense of humor. Ethel's hobbies also included water color painting, crocheting and knitting. She always had a large vegetable and flower garden.

Darwin Clippinger

OCEANSIDE, Cal. - Darwin Clippinger, formerly of Charles City, passed away September 4, 2004 in Oceanside, Cal. He owned Charles City Locker for 10 years.

Darwin is survived by his wife Jane of Oceanside; daughter Donna (Richard) Ferrier of Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.; daughter Cheryl (David) Schuelke of San Diego, Calif.; son Mark (Jamie) Clippinger of Omaha, Neb.; three granddaughters and one grandson.

Pamela S. Kane (Hopkins)

WILMINGTON, Del. - Pamela S. Kane (Hopkins), age 58, died peacefully at her home in Brandywine Hundred following a long illness. She had been a resident of Wilmington for over 30 years. She was the daughter of the late Marvin and Irma Krause of Charles City.

She was a journalism major at the University of Iowa. She began writing for publications in the mid 1980s including articles for several computer publications and nine books relating to the computer field. In the early 1990s, she switched her subject matter to cruise vacations and was a regular contributor to Porthole and Cruise Travel magazines. She had two books on cruising published, "Cruise Control, What to Know Before You Go" in 1999, and her latest book, "Happy Sails, The Carefree Cruiser's Handbook" was published earlier this year by Beagle Bay Books.

She was very active in Republican politics and was a former State Republican Committeewoman, Election District Committeewoman, and Secretary of the Brandywine Hundred Region Republican Committee. She was also a delegate many times to the Delaware State Republican Convention and alternate delegate to the 1996 Republican National Convention.

She is survived by her husband, B. Anderson Hopkins; daughter, Elizabeth M. Kane of Atlanta, Ga.; son, John T. Kane of Philadelphia, Pa.; stepsons, Robert R. Hopkins of Swarthmore, Pa., and Maxwell A. Hopkins of Media, Pa.; and a brother, Don Krause of Wilmington.

A celebration of her life will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, September 13, 2004 at Centre Friends Meeting on Centre Meeting Road.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made for hurricane victims in Florida to the American Red Cross, Disaster Relief Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.

Rev. R. Roland Ritter

AITKEN, Minn. - The Rev. R. Roland Ritter, who was the pastor of the First Methodist Church in Charles City from 1962 to 1969, passed away July 5, 2004, at the age of 91. He retired to Aitken, Minn. in 1977 where he pastored a Community Church for 12 years. He preached his final sermon on February 15, 2004. He had been in ministry for 70 years. His funeral was a ceremony of rejoicing for the life he had lived and because he has now gone on to his eternal reward.

He was married to Eugertha Hauber in Pennsylvania. They were the parents of Freya, Naomi and Cathy. His wife passed away in 1955, and he later married Pauline Ford of Central City. They were the parents of Sylvia and Ford. He had a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Philosophy from Penn State and a Master's Degree in Sacred Theology from Boston Theological Seminary.

While he was the Pastor of First Methodist in Charles City, the tornado of 1968 destroyed the Church Building, the Educational Building and the Parsonage. He and the Rev. Larry Carlton jointly pastored the merged Central and First Methodist Churches for a time.

Rev. Ritter is survived by his widow, Pauline Ritter; his four daughters and one son; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, his brother, James, and an infant son, Robert.

Rozeltha E. (Todd) Jones

Rozeltha E. Jones, formerly of Charles City, died at home in Cooperstown, NY, where she had made her home since 1993.

Graveside services will be held on September 18th at 2:30 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a reception at the Congressional Church Hall, 502 N. Jackson St. immediately following the memorial service.

Rozeltha E. Jones was born Oct. 3, 1908 in Nashua, Iowa. The daughter of George and Daisy (Perry) Todd. She graduated from Charles City High School with the class of 1926.

In July 1936, she was united in marriage to Weston E. Jones. He died 1953. The Jones family moved from 1001 Ferguson St. to 204 Kelly in 1949. During the 40's there were many happy times. The family Christmas Eve gathering with Weston's oyster stew, hosting visiting friends from the Elks Lodge, parties during the "Tired Businessmen's Golf Tournament" hosted by the Oliver Corporation, family trips to Elks conventions, the east coast, and Mexico, and annual vacations on Minnesota's lakes.

In 1993, after living in Charles City for 75 years, Rose moved to Cooperstown, NY. She made many new friends and enjoyed her final nine years surrounded by her son, his wife and three grandchildren.

Her son, C. R. Jones and his wife, Susan of Cooperstown, NY, survive her. She has three grandchildren, Graham, Perry and Amanda Jones.

Preceding Rose in death were her parents, her husband, two sisters Hazel (Todd) Schmidt, a brother Eldon G. Todd and two infant sisters' Viola and Madge.

Her younger sister, Irma (Todd) Krause died July 2, 2004.


Irma M. (Todd) Krause

Irma M. Todd 91, formerly of Storm Lake and Charles City, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at her home on Foulk Manor North in Wilmington, DE where she had made her some since December of 1999.

Graveside services will be held on Sept. 18 at 2:30 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a reception at the Congressional Church Hall, 502 N. Jackson St. immediately following the memorial service.

Irma M. Todd was born May 1, 1913 in Bremer County, Iowa, near Waverly, the daughter of George and Daisy (Perry) Todd. She graduated from Charles City High School with the class of 1931.

On April 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Marvin A Krause in Austin, Minn. He died on Nov. 6, 1991. The couple moved to Storm Lake in 1964 from Charles City. Irma enjoyed playing golf and belonged to both the Alta and Lake Creek Country Clubs. She also was an avid bridge player.

Her daughter Pamela S. Kane died of a long illness on September 5, 2004

Her son, Don Krause and his wife, Bonny of Wilmington, DE, survive her. She has six grandchildren, Elizabeth and John Kane, Susan and Daniel Krause and Robert and Maxwell Hopkins, four nephews and numerous extended family members and friends.

Preceding Irma in death were her parents, her husband, two sisters Hazel (Todd) Schmidt and Rozeltha E Jones; a brother Eldon G. Todd and two infant sisters; Viola and Madge.

Chester Goodno

Chester Goodno, 95, of Charles City, died Friday, September 10, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Chester Goodno will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. Rev. Solomon Odoom, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Chester Roy Goodno was born December 4, 1908, in Bronson, Kans., the son of Otis and Bessie (Noble) Goodno. He graduated in 1930 from the Decorah High School. On November 26, 1938, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Anderson in Decorah. Chester served in the United States Army during World War II. The couple farmed from 1946 to 1974 in Floyd County. He also did electrical work for Curry Electric of Floyd. Chester enjoyed woodworking, playing cribbage and pinochle, watching television, and having loved sharing coffee with family and friends. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church and served on the church board. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, Floyd School Board, Township Trustee and American Legion. He was the last surviving charter member of the Floyd Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen, of Charles City; daughter Karen Nott and husband Lyle, Iowa Falls; two grandsons, John C. Nott and wife Kathy, Lowden; and Joel D. Nott and wife Jasie, Ames; six great grandchildren, Jennifer Elizabeth Nott, Kelly Nott, David Nott, Bethany Nott, Lillian Kay Nott, and Jack Lloyd Goodno Nott. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Lydia Moen; and stepbrothers, Alan and Richard Moen.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. monday at Holy Family Parish, St. mary's Center, with Monsignor Carl Schmitt and Rev. John Harpel celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton.

Darryl Raymond Sumner

NEW HAMPTON - Darryl Raymond Sumner, 56, of New Hampton died Friday, September 10, 2004, at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center, with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass.

Interment will be in New Hampton City Cemetery.

John Gauger

John Gauger, 82, a resident of 204 Park Drive, Charles City, died Sunday, September 12, 2004, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services for John Gauger will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Paul Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

John Henry Gauger was born November 22, 1921, on a farm near Floyd, the son of Walter C. and L. Anna (Janssen) Gauger. He attended Floyd and Rockwell City schools, graduating from Charles City High School in 1939. John then attended Iowa State Teachers College for two years. On May 2, 1944, John was united in marriage to Arlette Davidson at Charles City. John proudly served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, American Theater Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. Johnâs career at the United States Post Office spanned 43 years and he retired in August 1984. His career began as a substitute clerk and upon his retirement he was a Program Manager of Delivery Services at Regional Headquarters in Chicago. He also worked in Evansville, Ind. as a Customer Service Officer and taught classes at the Postal Services Management Institute in Washington D.C. John was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he had served as a Sunday School superintendent and teacher, Lay Speaker and on various boards and committees. They spent many winters in Seal Beach, Calif., where they attended Leisure World Community Church and John taught Sunday School. He enjoyed life to the fullest especially traveling and spending time with his family. Thursday mornings would find John having breakfast with "the best postal crew in the world." John will be remembered by many as an important father figure impacting their lives. He always felt that his purpose in life was serving and this was evidenced in his service to God, country, postal career, family and friends.

John is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Arlette Gauger of Charles City; his children, Janice Benson of Bakersfield, Calif., Nanette (Jon) Winkel of Sargeant Bluff, and Richard (Jan) Gauger of Falcon Heights, Minn.; his grandchildren, Tammy (Chris) Ryder, Todd Benson, Derek (Deonne) Winkel, Daniel Winkel, John Gauger, Erich Gauger, and Michael Gauger; his great grandchildren, Dylan Benson, Anna and Ella Ryder; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Davidson and Marion Zierath; five brothers-in-law, Dean Schlick, Alvin (Shirley) Davidson, Allen (Sharon) Davidson, Glenn (Ruth) Davidson, Lyle (Vera) Davidson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kermit Gauger; a sister-in-law, Gen Schlick; and three brothers-in-law, Irving Davidson, Oscar Davidson and Raymond Zierath.

Clifton E. Sours

NASHUA - Clifton E. Sours, 59, of Nashua, died Friday, September 10, 2004, in Dumont of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral Services will be 2 p.m., today at the Ionia Funeral Home in Ionia with Reverend Sharon Sours officiating. Vocalists for the service will be Reverend Sharon Sours and Reverend Jean Clark.

Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock with Steve Lowe, Clark Miller, Leonard Sinnwell, Paul Lines, Bill Orthaus and Wally Boehmer serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Arnold Agre, Eric Edgington, Roy Sours, Dennis Barrick, Paul Kelly, Willis Beebe, Richard "Abby" Abbas and Earl "Bud" Sorensen.

Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, September 13, 2004, and will continue 1 hour prior to services today at Ionia Funeral Home.

Clifton Eugene Sours was born September 19, 1944, at Charles City, the son of Claire and Lucille (Pratt) Sours. He attended school in Wisconsin and graduated from the Ventura High School in 1963. After his schooling, Clifton farmed with his father and worked at Hydrotile in Nashua. He later furthered his education at a welding school in Fargo, North Dakota. On June 29, 1974, he was united in marriage to Marilyn (Agre) at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following their marriage, the couple resided on a farm south of Ionia where they were currently residing. He continued to work at Hydrotile and raised Belgian Horses. After the closing of Hydrotile, Clifton went to horseshoeing school and later went to work for Featherlite in Nashua. His failing health forced him into early retirement.

He enjoyed raising horses and working them in the field. He has served as a judge for plowing matches and horse shows. He was a member of the Draft Horse Association and in his childhood was active in 4-H. He enjoyed kids, especially his nieces, nephews and cousins.

Clifton is survived by his wife Marilyn of 30 years of Nashua; his mother Lucille Sours of Charles City; two sisters, Eileen (Willis) Beebe of Eagle Grove and Reverend Sharon Sours of Charles City; as well as his aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, Claire Sours.

Ann Aldridge

SAN DIEGO, Cal. - Ann Aldridge (Snyder), 69, formerly of Charles City, passed away at home on Saturday, September 11, 2004, after a difficult recovery from surgery.

She was born in Charles City, raised her family in Freeport, Ill., and moved to San Diego, Cal. in 1979.

She is survived by her husband Woody; daughter Kim Aldridge of Santee, Cal.; daughter Irene (Dale) Pruess of Escondido, Cal.; son Dave (Andrea) Aldridge of Escondido, Cal.; son Dan Aldridge of Taipei, Taiwan; 7 grandchildren; sister Irene (Paul) Field and brother Joe (Marian) Snyder, both of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Ray Apel and Bonnie and Wes Banks.

Services are at St. Mary's Church in Escondido, Cal. on Friday, September 17, 2004, at 10 a.m. A rosary at the Alheiser-Comer Mortuary will be today, Thursday, September 16, 2004, at 7 p.m.

Irma M. Todd 91, formerly of Storm Lake and Charles City, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at her home on Foulk Manor North in Wilmington, DE where she had made her some since December of 1999.

Graveside services will be held on Sept. 18 at 2:30 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a reception at the Congressional Church Hall, 502 N. Jackson St. immediately following the memorial service.


Barbara J. Long

CLAYSVILLE, Pa. - Barbara J. Long, 63, of Claysville, Pa., died on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, in her home. She had battled cancer for many years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept.18, at 10:30 a.m., at Covenant Life Fellowship, 55 Point View Drive, Washington. Inurnment services will follow immediately at Washington Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Menomonie,Wis., daughter of Dewayne O. and Mary Curran Nutter. Dee coached at Osage High School prior to operating a grocery store in Rudd from 1951-1957. Barb attended Rudd High School where she was active in band, chorus and cheerleading. She attended the Rudd Methodist Church, was active in the youth group and choir, Girl Scouts and assisted with Brownies. She was a member of Covenant Life Fellowship, Washington, Pa. She had employment by the Tri-County Patriots for Independent Living (T.R.I.P.I.L.) where she also served as a board member. She participated in Faith in Action, in Washington. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, playing cards, crossword puzzles, cooking, the outdoors, horses and traveling.

Surviving are three sons: Lon Newton of Tampa, Fla.; Bradley Newton of Carmichaels, Pa., and Eric (Rick) Newton of Claysville, Pa..; a brother, John Nutter, and sister, Judy Paris, both of Menominee, Mich.; seven grandchildren: Christopher and Crystalynn Newton; Joshua, Abigail, Anna, Jesse and Josiah Newton; great-grandson: Aiden Ray Newton. She was preceded in death by son, Scott Lowell Newton, and daughter, Laurie Ray Newton.

Alice Springer

Alice Springer, 97, a of Charles City, died Sunday, September 19, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Memorial services for Alice Springer will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. John Bates, pastor of Eden Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd.

The family will greet friends at the Hauser Funeral Home an hour prior to the service.

Alice Catherine Waddell Springer was born May 8, 1907 at Gifford, the daughter of Alfred and Minnie (Wentworth) Waddell. She attended school at Marshalltown. On February 23, 1928, she was united in marriage to Clarence Springer at Kane County, IL. They farmed west of Floyd for many years. Shortly after Clarence died in 1964 Alice moved to Charles City. Alice then worked as a care giver for numerous families. She was a member of the Eden Presbyterian Church, Royal Neighbors at Floyd and the Charles City Womenâs Club. Her hobbies included flower and vegetable gardening.

Living family members include two daughters, Catherine (Robert) Hartmann of Charles City, and Mary Louise Lipelt of Owatonna, MN; nine grandchildren, Sandra (Mike Hueholt) Hartmann, Barbara (Todd Sorenson) Hartmann, August (Carolyn) Hartmann, Linda (Mike) Leiva, Christina (Terry) Payne, Dan (Galla) Crosser, David (Karen) Crosser, Connie (Jerry) Reichenbach, and Sam (Lisa) Crosser; 11 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Maxine Robbinette of Marshalltown, and JoAn Francis of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: a great grandson, Zachariah Payne; three brothers; and a sister.

Norma Roethler

Norma Roethler, 72, a resident of 2142 Walnut Avenue, Charles City, died Saturday, September 18, 2004, at her home.

A funeral Mass for Norma Roethler will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Norma Helen Hillsman Roethler was born January 17, 1932, in Chickasaw County, the daughter of Aloysius and Irene (Bonfig) Hillsman. She received her education at St. Bernardâs Catholic School in Alta Vista. On January 5, 1953, she was united in marriage to Clair Roethler at St. Bernardâs Catholic Church. They farmed East of Charles City for many years. Norma was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Saint Catherineâs Circle. She enjoyed her house plants and also looked forward to assisting with activities at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, working at the Knights of Columbus fish fries and socializing and helping others in whatever way she could. Normaâs family was very important to her and she always looked forward to spending time with them especially with the grandchildren.

Living family members include her husband, Clair Roethler of Charles City; and son, Chris (Faith) Roethler of Story City; two grandchildren, Cassondra and Levi Roethler; a brother, Ronald (Judy) Hillsman of Waterloo; and a sister, Janice (Dale) Ableitner of Pine Island, MN.

Her parents preceded her in death.

JoAnne Larsen

Pilot Grove, Minn. - JoAnne Larsen, age 56, of Pilot Grove, Minn., formerly of Charles City, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at her home.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore, with Rev. Robert Roettger officiating. Burial will be in East Chain Lutheran Cemetery, East Chain. Visitation time will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Patton Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 400 E. 14th Street, in Blue Earth and one hour prior to services at the church.

JoAnne was born Jan. 2, 1948, at Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Earl W. and Wilma (Swinton) Braend.

She was raised and educated in Charles City, where she was a 1966 graduate of Charles Cith High School. She attended Mankato Commercial College before her marriage to Dean Larsen on Aug. 5, 1967 in Charles City. The couple moved to Pilot Grove Township, Minn., where they farmed for many years. JoAnne was a homemaker and had worked at the Elmore Bank for a short time. She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Pilot Grove where she was the church organist for many years. Following the closing of her church in the early 1990's she became a member of the Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore. JoAnne had been a 4-H leader years ago and always loved family gatherings. She enjoyed their family pets, collecting angels and bears and especially playing the piano.

She is survived by her husband, Dean Larsen of, Pilot Grove; sons Jason (wife Laura) Larsen of Blue Earth, Jeremy Larsen (fiancee Laurie Osmundson) of Elmore, and Shane (wife Shelly) Larsen of East Chain and their children, Kaleigh and Kassidy; sisters Diane (husband Tom) Maloney of Cedar Rapids and Jane (husband Rick) Staudt of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial donations will be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Courage Center or United Hands Hospice.

Sister Francesca Oldham

Sister Francesca Oldham, RSM, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 25, at Chapel of Mercy, Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Msgr. Karl L. Glovik. Burial will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Chapel of Mercy from 2 to 9 p.m., Friday, where a wake service will begin at 7 p.m., and at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Arrangements are with Stewart Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.

Born in Charles City, she was the daughter of Francis and Edith Murray Oldham. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers: Jim, Jack, Joe, Mike and Rick; and one sister, Sister Mary Ellen Oldham, RSM. In addition to her Sisters of Mercy, Sister Francesca is survived by two brothers, Alan (Marian), Billings, MT, and Paul (Janet), Algona; two sisters, Cathy (Larry) Phearman, Mason City, and Imelda (Chuck) Housh, Monee, Ill.; four sisters-in-law, Barb (Jack), Jacksonville, Fla.; Edith (Joe) and Darlene (Mike), both of Dubuque; Peg (Rick), Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

Sister entered the Cedar Rapids Community of the Sisters of Mercy August 1, 1951, and made her final profession of vows February 2, 1957. She received her BA from Mount Mercy College and her MA from St. Xavier College, Chicago, both in education.

From 1954 to 1964, Sister Francesca taught grades 3-6 at the following Eastern Iowa schools: St. Matthew, St. Wenceslaus, and Immaculate Conception, all in Cedar Rapids; St. Patrick, Fairfax; St. John, Clarion; and St. Benedict, Decorah. For the next 34 years, she taught junior high and high school level students at Immaculate Conception, Elma; Columbus, Waterloo; and Regis, All Saints and Immaculate Conception, all in Cedar Rapids, concluding her ministry in education as head teacher and principal at St. Benedict in Decorah. From 1970 to 1978, in addition to teaching, Sister Francesca also served as the director of Sister Formation for the Regional Community.

At the time of her death, Sister was serving as pastoral associate at Immaculate Conception and St. Wenceslaus in Cedar Rapids, a ministry she had served since 1998.

All who knew her will miss Sister Francesca's frequent and brilliant smile. She will be especially remembered for her loving patience with her students and the comforting kindness she brought to the homebound parishioners she visited regularly.

Helen V. Klunder

CLARKSVILLE, Iowa - Helen V. Klunder, 87, of Clarksville, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 10:30 am at the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley with Rev. Anne Sunday officiating. Burial will be in the Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield. Friends may call from 2:00 pm until 8 p.m. on Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, Community Nursing Home or to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Helen was born January 6, 1917, the daughter of Bernard and Nota (Carlton) Petersen in LaPorte City, Iowa. She attended school in Waverly, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley. On January 18, 1934, she was united in marriage to Albert F. Klunder in the parsonage at First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley. Helen and Albert farmed for 58 years in the Butler County area. Helen enjoyed gardening, baking, being outdoors, and spending time with her family and friends. She was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Survivors are her children: son Dean Klunder and his wife, Pat, of Waverly; daughters LaVonne Reeves and her husband, Royce of Chino, Calif., Ruth Mitchell and her husband, George, of Charles City, Evelyn Sanderson and her husband, Dr. David, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Joan Johnston and her husband, Roger, of Cresco; daughter-in-law Doris Klunder of Charles City; 21 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert, on Oct. 25, 2000; son, Eldon Klunder; one grandchild; five great grandchildren; sister, Bernice Petersen; and two brothers, Ralph and Leo Petersen.

George R. Shultz

George Robert Shultz was born, October 29, 1920, in rural Scott Township, Floyd County, a son of Clinton Ross and Myrtle Mynelia (Elfers) Shultz, and died Thursday, September 23, 2004, at his farm in Greene

He received his education in the rural schools and graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1937. As a young man he was engaged in farming in Floyd County. On July 27, 1944, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served with Co. F 120th Regt. 30th Div. in Central Europe. On March 2, 1945, he was united in marriage to Margaret Louise Azerski, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following his discharged on February 22, 1946, he returned to farming. George and Margaret were blessed with four children.

George's life and greatest love was farming. For more than 58 years he farmed in the Greene and Marble Rock area. He was once asked what he was going to do when he retired. His reply was to farm. He was well-versed in the various farming techniques, market prices, and types of farming equipment. George enjoyed going to the farm sales and enjoyed trading machinery. He served on the Farmers Cooperative Board and the Floyd County Pork Producers Board.

He was a quiet and humble man. He enjoyed going to town for coffee, going for a walk around town, and visiting the public library. George was baptized on June 5, 1949, at the First Methodist Church, in Marble Rock. He has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where he has served as Trustee and Elder of the church.

Those thankful for his life include his loving wife, Margaret of Greene, and his children: Roger (Joan) Shultz of Encino, Calif., Robert (Laurel) Shultz of Greene, Jean (David) Thorson of Charles City, and Carol Lee (Dan) Schroeder of Greene; 15 grandchildren: Lance (Amy) Shultz, Rayan (Jennifer) Shultz, Travis (Friend Mandy Mashburn) Shultz, Garrett Shultz, Chad (Janice) Shultz, Chet (Bridget) Shultz, John Shultz, Megan Shultz, Stacy, Gretchen, and Kyle Thorson, Tricia (Michael) Jaeger and Jesse (Friend Julia Wilson) Thorson, Justin and Jace Schroeder; 10 great-grandchildren: Laney, Kennedy, Nadia, Tanner, Katelyn Rose, Clay, Alex, Morgan, Madelyn, and Zachariah; one brother Lowell Shultz of Charles City, Sister-in-law: Genevieve Sorenson; and several nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers: Raymond, Lloyd, Dean, Don, and Clyde.

William G. Perry

BELOIT, Wis. - William G. Perry, 62, of Beloit, Wisconsin, and formerly of Charles City, died on September 25, 2004, at the Pinnacle Health Center in Waukegan, Ill.

William Grant Perry was born October 23, 1941, in Iowa City, the son of Grant and LaVyna (Sheffner) Perry. He was raised and educated in Charles City. In 1962, he was united in marriage to Linda Matte in Charles City. The couple later divorced. Bill was employed by area roofing companies, worked as a fisherman off of a tugboat in Texas, was a truck driver in the Midwest, and worked as a carpenter for many years for the Area Community Action Committee in Springfield, Missouri. He enjoyed fishing, stockcar racing and especially spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his children Virginia (Christopher) Barber, Forest City, William Perry, Springfield, Mo., Susan Benson, Marshfield, Mo., Lois Keaton, Springfield, Mo., Kay (Brian) Keifer, Plainfield; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Judy Dann, Helen Bill, Jane True, Jennet Kock, and Sharon Maier all of Charles City, Bertha Marrs, Rockford, Mary (Tom) Roeder, Springfield, Mo., Pauline (Francis) Murray, Beloit, Wis., Darlene (Ronald) Ferch, Eldora, Carol (Rev. OSAGE - Private Graveside Services for Dalton Jacob Schafer, infant son of Jacob Dean and Theresa Ranae (DeBower) Schafer, of 1932 317th Street, Osage, were held 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 27, 2004, at South Vilmar Cemetery with Pastor Mark Walker of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Dalton died Thursday, September 23, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Beulah I. Mead

NASHUA - Beulah Irene Mead, 74, of Nashua, passed away September 24, 2004, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. A Memorial Service was held on September 27, 2004, at the Congregational Church in Nashua with Pastor Gale Richards officiating.

Beulah was born June 30, 1930, at Cedar Falls, the daughter of George and Vada (Rockwell) Hansen. She attended Nashua High School. On August 18, 1947, she was united in marriage to LaVern Mead at Cedar Rapids. Beulah was a school bus driver for the Nashua School district for 13 years and also worked part time in an insurance office. Beulah had outstanding abilities in crafts, painting, quilting, sewing, cooking and last, but not least, card playing. With the challenge of Bridge, Euchre, Pinnacle, Old Maid, Skippo or whatever, Beulah's one main goal was to WIN! The time she spent with her family was very special to her and she treasured the time spent with her four granddaughters.

Beulah is survived by her husband, LaVern; a son, LaVern, Jr. (friend Jolene), Nashua; daughter LaVonne Kruckenberg (Mike) of Charles City; two sisters: Genevieve Campbell, Phoenix Ariz., and Lucy Mager, Pharr, Texas; four granddaughters: Haley Majewski, Denver, Col., Julie Fagle, Cedar Rapids, Alyson Gearhart (Mitch), Keystone, and Holly Fiser (Ryan), Cedar Falls; and a great-grandson, Brandon Fagle.

David Gene Chambers was born July 4, 1949, at Charles City, the son of Von and Gloria (Rice) Chambers. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1967. On August 22, 1971, he was united in marriage to Diana Dee Lampman at the Little Brown Church. Diana died on August 24, 1989. David worked at White Farm Equipment Company, John Deere, Druggist Mutual and Western-Southern Mutual. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, watching television and movies, going for rides and enjoying the outdoors on his deck.

Living family members include two children, Lisa (Shawn) Kettwig of Manly, and Matt Chambers of Mason City; three grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Kettwig and Dylan Chambers; his parents, Von and Gloria Chambers of Charles City; and two sisters, Becky (Pete) Johnston of Ionia, and Vicky (Dave) Rich of Algona.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City for Delbert Zimmer, 92, a resident of 807 5th Street, Charles City, who died Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Duane G. Kisner

NORA SPRINGS - Duane G. Kisner, 69, of 1515 Dancer Ave., Nora Springs, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the Hanford Community Church, 12411 Spruce Ave, Mason City, with Pastor Daniel Cline officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, with military honors by the Nora Springs American Legion H.D.S. Post 449.

The family of Duane G. Kisner has requested that memorials be made to Duane G. Kisner Memorial Fund, in his memory.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Hospice of North Iowa, nurses and nurses aides on all shifts on the second floor at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, and to Dr. Paul Royer of Charles City and Dr. Lynn Schuster of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for their kind and loving care shown to Duane and his family.

Duane was born March 15, 1935, in Wheelerwood, Iowa, the son of George H. and Anna (Baumgartner) Kisner. He started school at Lincoln #6 and in 1942 moved to a farm southeast of Dumont. The family moved back to Mason City in 1948. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1953.

Duane carried the Des Moines Register newspaper weekly and Sunday from 1948-1951 on S. Adams to S. Jefferson. He worked for Lapner Motor Co., Pritchard Motor Co, Breeze Service Station on S. Federal, Bill Hawley Studebaker Garage, IH. Motor Trucks and Floyd and Leonard's Auto. He specialized as a parts man and mechanic.

Duane served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 1957-1959 at Ft. Carson, Colo., as a maintenance instructor on small helicopters and light fixed wing aircraft. He really enjoyed the flying part of the job. In 1960, he transferred to an Army Reserve unit in Mason City and was discharged Nov. 30, 1963.

Duane married Suzanne (Suzy) Stevens June 26, 1954, at the Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church, Mason City.

He was in the International Farm Machinery business in Rudd from 1960-1981. He worked as manager of the Bolon Store and Case Implement in Mason City as a salesman. In 1983, he owned and operated a business on his acreage, Kisner Sales and Service, a power equipment and farm agriculture business which he ran until 2004. He was a substitute rural mail carrier for eight years in Mason City RR#3 and Nora Springs RR#2, then became a full-time rural mail carrier on Dec. 10, 1994 until 1999.

Duane was a Cub Master for eight years in Nora Springs. He loved and enjoyed his family and working with the public. He was a member of the Hanford Community Church and Rural Mail Carrier's Association, AmVets; he served on the Board of Trustees of Kinney Pioneer Museum from 1993 and elected president in 1996 until the present. His interest and labors of the museum ran deep.

Duane enjoyed family genealogy. He wrote and published 'Wheelerwood, Iowa - Gone But Not Forgotten' in 2003. Over 200 copies were sold and 20 were donated to public libraries. He also enjoyed garage sales and numerous hobbies: He enjoyed collecting and trading toy tractors, and many antiques, snowmobile and grass snowmobile racing. After retirement, he enjoyed reading, especially western paperbacks, old gun-related stories, magazines, mysteries and newspapers. In recent years, he looked forward to the Fourth of July with a gathering of family. He took pride in his lawn and acreage and worked hard to keep it looking attractive. He would feed the birds on his land, and shared his pride of gardening to supply tomatoes and more for all his family and friends. He also created a tree belt area for the conservation of his land.

His pride of nature continued even while on his rural mail routes, as he spoke of the birds and wildlife he observed.

Duane is survived by his wife of 50 years, Suzanne (Suzy) Kisner; three sons: Bruce D. Kisner, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Gregory L. Kisner, Cedar Falls and Brian L. Kisner and his wife, Tanya, Cary, N.C.; two grandchildren, Kailey and Mallory Kisner; one sister, Lois Rickman and her husband Jerry, Drasco, Ark.; and a favorite niece, Cindy Jorgenrud and her husband, Jerry, Anoka, Minn.; brothers-in-law Darryl Stevens and his wife, Sharon, of Tucson, Ariz., Jerry Stevens and his wife, Angie, of Omaha, Neb., and Bill Stevens and his wife, Elaine, of Carson City, Nev.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, and a niece, Wendy Havnen.
