Elma Meier

Elma Meier, 90, a former resident of 900 9th Street, Charles City, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elma Meier will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Alliance Church. The Rev. Kent Sovine, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Elma Eleanora Ernst Meier was born July 22, 1913, on a farm east of Rockford, the daughter of John and Anna (Vietmeier) Ernst. She was baptized and confirmed at the Flood Creek Methodist church and later asked Jesus into her heart as her personal Lord and Savior. Elma graduated from the Rockford High School in 1931. On November 17, 1932, she was united in marriage to Julius Meier in the home of her Aunt Lydia Kupinger at Mason City. They lived in the Rockford area for many years where they raised turkeys and did custom bailing while they farmed. Elma worked right along with Julius on the farming operation. She was a member of Bethany Alliance Church, Woman's Club, and had served on the Riverside Cemetery Board at Rockford. She was known as a lady that loved flowers and gardening. They traveled twice back to Germany, where Julius was born, and also traveled in all of the United States except for Alaska and Hawaii.

Living family members include a daughter, Doris Rolfes of Woodbury, Minn.; a son, Eugene (Lucille) of Rockford; six grandchildren, Lyndon Meier of Rockford and fianc/e Jewel Ransom, Janette Meier of Rockford, Starla (Barry) Munson of Iowa Falls, Bob Rolfes, Jr. of New Braunfels, Texas, Brian Rolfes of Cottage Grove, Minn.; and Kathy (Rolfes) Goettle of Aurora, Colo.; seven great grandchildren; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Julius on October 25, 1992, a half brother and an infant son, Leland.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Doris Ploehn

GREENWOOD, South Carolina - Doris Maxine Clammer Ploehn, 81, widow of Adolph Marcus Carl Ploehn, died April 3, 2004, at Wesley Commons.

Born in Charles City, September 18, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Ray and Clara Guthart Clammer. She was a graduate of Western Michigan University where she majored in Home Economics. She retired as an Auditor with the Michigan Department of Social Services and was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol P. Wesa of McCormick and Christina P. Kawala of Farmington Hills, Michigan; a son, Steven Ploehn of Friendswood, Texas; a sister, Eleanor Davis of Sun City, Ariz.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Margaret Needham

GREENE - Funeral services for Margaret M. Needham, 88, of 315 East Traer, Greene, will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a public Scripture Service and Service of Remembrance at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour before services.

Margaret Mae Shultz was born November 9, 1915, in rural Union Township, Floyd County a daughter of Isaac H. and Nora (Lucian) Shultz, and died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at the Rolling Green Care Center in Nevada.

She attended Marble Rock Consolidated School the first seven years of her schooling and later Greene and Allison before graduating from Charles City High School in 1933 with honors. She taught rural schools in both Floyd and Butler Counties for over six years.

On November 23, 1938, she was united in marriage to Joseph Floyd Needham of Bristow at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following their marriage, they farmed in Bennezette Township, west of Greene, and near Charles City, until their retirement in March 1976. Following their retirement they enjoyed spending their winters in warmer climates until Floyd's death September 9, 1990.

Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and her family was her first priority and concern. She enjoyed doing for others.

She was baptized on July 12, 1936, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene and later became a life-long member of the church. She held offices in the Presbyterian Women Circle and good Cheer Sunday School Class. She was a long time member of the Better Way Club, Farm Bureau, and was a 4-H leader.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her two daughters: Nancy Jo McWilliams of Palm Springs, Ca;if., Nora Jane (Frank) Mitchell of Nevada; two grandchildren: Melanie Mitchell of Nevada, Matthew (Jennie) Mitchell of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister: DeFerris Hurd, and four brothers: Phillip, Frank, Galen, and Berton Shultz.

Ruth Cecilia Cirks

GREENE: Funeral Mass for Ruth Cecilia Cirks, 89, of 616 North First, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, with Rev Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary Service. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Wednesday.

Ruth Cecilia DeMar was born December 19, 1914, in Greene a daughter of Frank and Anna Marie (Albrecht) DeMar, and died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

She received her education from St. Mary's Academy in Greene and was united in marriage to Enno Eiko Cirks on October 6, 1933, in Northwood, Iowa. They farmed in the rural Greene area until June 1947, when they moved into Greene where they purchased the Phillips 66 Gas Station from her father. They operated the station until their retirement in 1989 and was recognized by Phillips 66 Oil Company for 42 years of continuous service.

She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Guild and St. Isadore's Circle.

Living family members include five sisters: Martha Mulkins of Portland, Ore., Magdeline Hesalroad of Greene, Irene Sexton of Mason City, Loretta Schnieder of Mason City, Dorothy Dahm of Orange, Calif.; and one brother Raymond (Ardis) DeMar of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Francis, Edward, and Thomas DeMar and one sister Margaret DeMar.

Blaise Alan Brase

NASHUA - Blaise Alan Brase, 6 day old son of Chelsea Thorson and Scott Brase, passed away Wednesday morning, April 7, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. He was born April 1, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Private Family Services will be Saturday, April 10, 2004, at St. John's Lutheran Church/Western Douglas, rural Plainfield, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be today, Friday, April 9, 2004, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua, 641-435-4134.

Dorothy M. Bonwell

Dorothy M. Bonwell, 80, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Charles City, died Friday, April 09, 2004, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Alliance Church. Pastor Gary Olson, Chaplain of Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverton Cemetery, rural Nashua.

Dorothy Marie Usher was born September 20, 1923, in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Walter and Justena (Erickson) Usher. She attended school in Ionia and Nashua. Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald C. Bonwell on December 10, 1939, in Charles City. Donald later passed away on August 13, 1984. Dorothy cooked for numerous years in the Charles City School District. She was a member of the Riverton Cemetery Association. Dorothy and Donald always enjoyed to go camping and fishing, but spending time with her family was most important.

Dorothy is survived and lovingly remembered by four sons: Lynn (Paulette) Bonwell of Lansing, Allen (Carol) Bonwell of Cedar Rapids, Bill D. (Mary Ann) Bonwell of Waterloo, and Denny (Cheri) Bonwell of Clear Lake; five daughters: Darliss (William) Farley of Waterloo, Sandra Huisman of Waterloo, Donna (Guy, Jr.) Lines of Nashua, Cherri (Roger) Cleveland of Ionia, Brenda (Steven) Malloy of Omaha, Neb., and a daughter-in-law Sandie Bonwell of Charles City. Dorothy is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren, three brothers: Merle Usher and Lyle Usher of Nashua, and Earl (Henrietta) Usher of Indianola.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, a son James, three grandchildren, a son-in-law Ronald Huisman, a brother Virgil Usher, and two sisters Mildred Buckel and Helen Jones.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice, 2101 Kimball Ave. Suite 401, Waterloo, IA, or to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.

Vida Chandler, 92, of 115 Rob Roy Lane Apt. #3, Charles City, died Friday afternoon, April 9, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Nashua - Charles F. Orric, 55, of Nasua, passed away Sunday morning, April 11, 2004, at his home in Nashua.

Robert Boekmeier

Robert Boekmeier, 62, a resident of 2091 230th Street, Rockford, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the University Hospital and Clinic in Iowa City.

Funeral services for Robert Boekmeier will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Wesleyan Church, Charles City. Pastor Mike Daley of New Life Tabernacle, Mason City, will officiate. Burial will be in West St. Charles Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Robert Donald Boekmeier was born October 20, 1941, at Charles City, the son of Donald and Lucille (Perrin) Boekmeier. He graduated from the Rockford High School in 1960. On February 6, 1965, he was married to Karla Weiler. They later divorced. He later married Jean Bryant on February 23, 1986. Jean died on November 2, 1991. Robert worked for at Oliver/White Corporation for five years, owned and operated Bob's Shoe Repair, worked for Landis Shoe Company repairing and selling shoe repair machines, and was proprietor of Flood Creek Leather and Shoe Machine Company. He was a member of New Life Tabernacle and was active in a local saddle club. Robert's interests include riding horses, hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles and building and flying small aircraft. His family was very important to him and he looked forward to spending time with them.

Living family members include two children, Russell (Ronda) Boekmeier of Floyd, and Marie (Douglas) Frenz of Ft. Madison; three grandchildren, Anthony and Stephanie Frenz, and Curtis Boekmeier; his parents, Don and Lucille Boekmeier; and a step brother, David Gillespie of Amery, Wisc.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean.


Paul A. Schrage

Funeral services for Paul A. Schrage, 68, of 22885 Indigo Avenue, Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2004, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Interment will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene and will continueFriday at the church one hour before services.

Paul Andrew Schrage was born June 4, 1935, rural Plainfield, Butler County, a son of Abel Johnson and Anna (Hinders) Schrage, and died Monday, April 12, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital under the care of Hospice.

He received his education in the rural Butler County schools and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1954. He was united in marriage to Janice Ries at the Little Brown Church on January 12, 1955. To this union were born four children.

Paul was employed by Oliver-White Farm Equipment for 30 years and later drove Winnebago Motor Homes after the plant shut down. He drove a school bus for the Greene Community School District for eight years and farmed several years in the Greene area. He was last employed by Allied Construction until his health forced him to retire on September 24, 2003.

He lived a simple and private life, with his family being the most important part of it all.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Janice of Marble Rock; two daughters: Deb (Rich) Kock and Cindy (Mike) Steere, both of Greene; daughter-in-law: Terry Schrage of Greene; seven grandchildren: Andrea (Jason) Webster of Charles City, Shannon (Nate) Trees, and Allyson Kock, all of Greene, Douglas (Jessica) Schrage of Manly, Samantha Schrage, Caitlyn and Morgan Steere, all of Greene; three great-grandchildren: Bryce and Brooke Trees and Caden Schrage; one sister: Wilma (Lloyd) Hodge of Cedar Falls, and a stepbrother: Kenny Rover of Greene. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles: Elizabeth (Lawrence) Liddle of Plainfield, Albert Schrage of Clarksville, William (Genevieve) Schrage of Waverly, and Lester Rover of Greene.

He leaves to join his parents and two sons: Michael Paul Schrage, who died October 20, 1964, and Bradley Schrage who died January 7, 2001.

Thomas Wik

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Thomas Michael Wik, age 67, of Eden Prairie, Minn., was born December 9, 1936, in Mason City and died Sunday, April 18, 2004.

Tom attended Charles City schools and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a lifelong sports fan, enthusiastic golfer, loving son, husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his mother, Ellen A. Meyer; wife, Marlene Brumond Wik; daughter, Lisa (Jerry) McLay; son, Erik (Nicole) Wik; grandchildren, Angela Wilson, Josh, Lydia, and Noah McLay, and Sophie Wik; great-grandchildren, Paul, Lynden, and Mackenzie Wilson. Tom was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Michael Wik, Jr.; father, Talford Wik; and stepfather, John H. Meyer.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 23, 2004, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City. Interment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 21, 2004, from 4 - 8 p.m. at Hauser Funeral Home.

Memorials preferred to the American Cancer Society or St. John's Lutheran Church, Charles City.

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Carroll L. "Buzz" King, 78, of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 22, 2004, at the United Methodist Church, Marble Rock. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Martin Ashley

Martin Ashley, 59, a resident of 1180 170th Street, Charles City, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City due to complications of cancer.

Funeral services for Martin Ashley will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Monsignor John Hemann, pastor of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Nashua, will officiate. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery rural Colwell.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday from noon until service time.

Martin Kendrick Ashley was born December 27, 1944, at Charles City, the son of Franklin and Frances (Anderson) Ashley. He was baptized at the Deerfield Church and graduated in 1963 from Charles City High School. On June 7, 1975, he was united in marriage to Mary Klassen in Ionia. They farmed near Bassett all of their lives. Martin also worked custom corn shelling, and with road construction. His interests included fishing, working with his buggy and horses, and tinkering with his tractors. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends at home or in the local taverns and was known for his morning "roundtable discussions" with the neighbors. The time he spent with his family was always important and they always knew that he would do anything for them.

Living family members include his wife, Mary of Charles City; three children, Franklin Ashley of Charles City, Roxanne (Curt) Carey of Nashua, and Jennifer Ashley of Charles City; his mother, Frances Ashley of Charles City; a brother, James (Marguerite) Ashley of Bassett; and two sisters, Marvelyn (Clayton) Lines of Marble Rock, and Faye (Bill) Klassen of Ionia; a sister-in-law, Bonnie (Larry) Boggess of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Jesse in 1990.

Berniece Wolf

NASHUA - Berniece Wolf, 74, passed away Thursday morning, April 22, 2004, at her home in Nashua of cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, with burial at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Visitation will be Sunday, from 2-6 p.m., at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Berniece (Plautz) Wolf was born on May 19, 1929, at Ayr, Neb., the daughter of Fred and Clara (Mohling) Plautz. She moved to Nashua with her parents in 1942 and graduated from Nashua High School in 1946. She taught rural schools for two years. Berniece was united in marriage to Kenneth J. Wolf on August 1, 1948, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua. They farmed southeast of Nashua until retiring in 1980, when they moved to town.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Nashua; three sons: Wesley (Jane) Wolf of Nashua, Stanley (Maria) Wolf of Waterloo and Roger (Dianna) Wolf of Lisbon; one daughter, Susan (Darrell) Durand of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Raymond Jakel of Nashua; seven grandchildren: Jeremy Wolf, Wendy Wagner and Brian Wolf, Melinda Wolf and Eric Wolf, along with Crystal Wolf and Alex Wolf.

Berniece was preceded in death by one son, Larry Wolf on August 20, 1971; her parents; one sister, C. Kathleen Jakel; one brother, Howard Plautz; and a sister-in-law, Kandi Plautz.

Kathryn Fleming

Kathryn F. Fleming, 74, of Floyd, went to be with the Lord on April 23, 2004, she passed at her home in Floyd.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd with Pastor Paul Phillips officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at the Hauser Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd.

Kathryn Faye Mitchell was born August 10, 1929, in Spooner, Wisc., the daughter of Milton and Phoebe (Bedford) Mitchell. She graduated from Spooner High School. On October 10, 1955, Kathryn was united in marriage to Winton H. Fleming in Minneapolis, Minn. She worked for I.D.S. in Minneapolis from 1947 to 1962. Kathryn later went to work for Senior Serving Business in Minneapolis in 1984 before moving to Floyd in 1991 to be close to her son, Mark, and grandchildren. Kathryn was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church. She enjoyed making braided rugs by hand and walked daily around Floyd. Kathryn's greatest enjoyment came from time with her family.

Kathryn is survived and lovingly remembered by her son Mark (Karen) Fleming of Floyd; her grandchildren Bethany, Priscilla, Elizabeth, and Daniel Fleming of Floyd, and her brothers John "Jack" (Muriel) Mitchell of Spooner, Wisc., and Eugene (Christine) Mitchell of Las Cruces, N.M.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clarence Mitchell.

Margaret Jorgensen

Margaret L. Jorgensen, 96, of Nora Springs, formerly of rural Rudd, died at the Nora Springs Care Center Saturday, April 24, 2004, where she had been a resident for the past 91/2 years.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, at the Rudd United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday April 27, at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Margaret Louise (Forsyth) Jorgensen was born in Paw Paw, Ill., to Mary (Miller) Forsyth and Chris E. Forsyth on August 16, 1907. She attended rural school in Floyd County and graduated from Charles City High School in 1926. She attended Cedar Falls College. She taught rural schools for 7-1/2 years including her home school Ulster #3, Frankenfield School and Ray Jurrens School. On May 14, 1933, Margaret married George P. Jorgensen, and they farmed together in the Charles City area, and Rockford and Rudd Townships until the death of her husband George in 1972. Margaret remained on the farm until July 1994 when she established residence at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs. She enjoyed her church work as a member and chairman of the WSCS Circle and a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Heritage Club, Farm Bureau Women, 500 Card Club, Jolly Rudders Senior Citizens, Rudd Homemakers, and was an assistant 4-H leader. She was an avid gardener, canning and freezing its yield, helped her husband in the field, enjoyed fishing, playing cards, entertaining guests for meals, crafts, and doing many other neighborly deeds. She dearly loved her seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending the school activities they participated in.

Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Ronald (Gila) Jorgensen of Rockford, Doris (Charles) Briggs of North Port, Fla., and Harold (Marilyn) Jorgensen of Rudd; seven grandchildren: Kirk (Kim) Briggs of Venice, Fla., Sandra Haller of Loveland, Colo., Bryan (Lori) Briggs of Nokomis, Fla., Kathleen (Kevin) Smith of Rockford, James (Debra) Jorgensen of Charles City, Kristy (David) Chambers of Osage, and Wendy (Steve) Fullerton of Rockford; 20 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1972; her parents; two sisters, Meta Keyes and Berdina Olson; and one brother, Wilbur Forsyth.


Katherine Lalor

EAGLE GROVE, Iowa - Katherine Lalor of Eagle Grove, and formerly of rural Charles City, passed away on Friday, April 23, 2004, at Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Foust Funeral Home, Eagle Grove.

Katherine Arne was born June 26, 1916, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Nels and Julia (Jorgeson) Arne. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1934. Katherine attended junior college in Eagle Grove for one year and then A.I.B. in Des Moines. After college, she began work at a local insurance office in Eagle Grove.

Katherine was united in marriage with Kenneth Lalor at Eagle Grove. They lived in the same house where she had grown up. She clerked in a dress shop and at the dime store. While Kenny was serving in the war, Katherine worked as a secretary at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. After returning to Eagle Grove from Washington, Katherine worked for Iowa Public Service for 15 years. The couple then purchased a farm northeast of Charles City and moved there. They raised cattle, chickens and cats, and Katherine worked at First Security Bank for 24 years, until her retirement. Kenneth preceded her in death in 1978, but Katherine remained on the farm for five years, raising chickens and selling eggs.

Katherine enjoyed reading and doing volunteer work at her church, St. John Evangelical Lutheran in Charles City. She traveled extensively to places like Norway, Sweden and the Holy Lands.

Living family members include her sister, Borghild Wingaard of Eagle Grove; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; a brother, Norman; and sister, Anna Norcm.

Maurice Lines

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Maurice L. Lines, 73, of 2653 Glass Road, Marble Rock, will be 1 :30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, at the Marble Rock Community Center with Pastor Patricia Shaw of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock, with military honors conducted by Stroud Gates Post 387, American Legion of Marble Rock.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, and will continue Thursday at the Community Center one hour before services.

Maurice Lee Lines was born September 18, 1930, in rural Ulster Township, Floyd County, a son of Henry Charles and Clara Anna (Schafer) Lines, and died Monday, April 26, 2004, at his home in rural Marble Rock.

He received his education at the Marble Rock Public School, graduating in 1948. While in high school and following graduation he was a baseball catcher for both the Marble Rock and Rockford town teams. He even tried out for the minor leagues with the Chicago White Sox.

On January 5, 1951, he entered the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge on August 12, 1954, he returned home to Marble Rock, where he farmed with his father and brother before starting out on his own.

He was united in marriage to Carole Doreen Spurgeon in June 1955. To this union were born three children.

Maurice served as Union Township Clerk since 1966, and was a life member of the Floyd County Farm Bureau, having served on its board and several committees. He was a member of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association. He was currently Commander of Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

On September 27, 1985, he was united in marriage to Dorothy (Paulus) Heffron at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford. Since 1995 they wintered in Mercedes, Texas.

Maurice was an avid pool player, who played in several leagues in the area. He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage. He will be remembered for all the jokes he loved to tell and the jokes he played on others.

Living family members include his loving wife: Dorothy of Marble Rock; his children: Terri (Jim) Engels of Rockford, Sandi (Carl) Snyder of Vernal, Utah, and Randy Lines of Marble Rock; three step-children: Deb Jacobs, Cherie (James) Merritt, all of Osage, Julie (Larry) Ackley of Carpenter; five grandchildren: Eric, Marc and Gregory Engels, Vicki and Derek Lines; seven step-grandchildren: Trisha (Jayme) Sedars, Christy (Josh) Willis, Shawn (Alison) Newhouse, Todd Krones, Eric, Andrew and Savanna Young; eight step-great-grandchildren; one sister: Lavina Morphew of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
