Delbert Zimmer

Delbert Zimmer, 93, of Charles City, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services for Delbert Zimmer will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr, of the First Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Colwell. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.

Delbert Jacob Zimmer was born January 31, 1911, in Floyd County, the son of Jacob F. and Jennie (Stabler) Zimmer. He attended school at Colwell. Delbert served in the United States Army during World War II. On February 14, 1942, he was united in marriage to Grace Monsen. Grace died on December 6, 2003. Delbert was a farmer at heart and along with farming worked various other jobs. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and playing cards at the YMCA and Senior Center.

Living family members include a son, D. Gene Zimmer of Charles City; a daughter Dorlean (Walter D.) Marshall, Sr. of Pittsburg, Penn., and their children, a son W. David Marshall, Jr. of Arizona and his two children, W. David Marshall III. and Virginia Marshall, Annette Marshall of Md., Denise (Dan) Solomon and their sons, Daniel and Joel Solomon of Mercer, Penn.; Daniel Marshall of Butler, Penn. and Timothy Marshall of Pittsburg, Penn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Vern, Dean and Donald; and three sisters, Zella Bonsall, Leona Crangle and Pauline Meyers.

D. Jean Ellery

D. Jean Ellery, 85, of 5 Lions Dr., Charles City, died early Thursday morning, September 30, 2004, with family at her side, in the care of Hospice at her home.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St., Charles City, with Pastor Paul Wilcox officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. The family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Those planning memorials or an expression of sympathy may direct them to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City or Hospice of North Iowa.

Jean was born September 19, 1919, in Waverly to Albert Thomas and Orpha Jean (Seely) Jermier. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1937. Following graduation from High School, Jean furthered her education by attending the Doctor's Assistant Program in Iowa City.

On July 15, 1937, Jean was united in marriage to L.R. "Budd" Ellery in Austin, Minn. She was also involved in the community socially and gave freely of her time, Jean was a very outgoing person and knew everyone.

Jean was employed as a Doctor's Assistant for twelve years with Dr. Goen and later Dr.'s Tolliver and Trefez, all of Charles City. She also worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist for twenty-nine years, in Charles City until retiring in 1985.

Jean was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, the Charity Peace Church Circle, the United Methodist Women, the Charles City Women's Club, the Heritage Club, Women of the Moose, the Elks and was a troop leader for both the Girls Scouts and Brownies. She was devoted and dedicated to her Christian faith. Jean cherished being around her family and friends. She especially enjoyed time spent traveling and best enjoyed the warm climates of both Texas and Florida. Her greatest joy in passing the time was that of bird and deer watching along the Cedar River in Charles City, her backyard provided a beautiful backdrop for just such an occasion. Jean had resided in the Charles City area for most all of her life.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her children, son, Gary L. "Skip" Ellery of Indian Head Park, Ill.; daughter, DiOnna Ellery of Ephrata, Wash. and daughter, Jerry K. Nelson and her husband, Doug of Charles City; seven Grandchildren, ten Great Grandchildren and two Great Great Grandchildren; one brother, Dr. James A. Jermier and his wife, Bonnie of Brooklyn, Ia. and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Jermier of Jacksonville, Fla. Also surviving are other relatives and many dear and special friends of Jean's.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, L.R. "Budd" Ellery on December 10, 1988; her daughter-in-law, Kathryn Weritz Ellery and a brother, Jack R. Jermier.

Herbert Hill

Herbert Hill, 48, of Charles City, died Thursday, September 30, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral Services for Herbert Hill will be held 10:30 a.m.. Tuesday, at Bethany Alliance Church in Charles City. Pastor Kent Sovine will officiate. Burial will be in Waterloo.

Herbert Hill

Herbert Hill, 48, of Charles City, died Thursday, September 30, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services for Herbert Hill will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Alliance Church in Charles City. Pastor Kent Sovine will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo.

Herbert Warren Hill was born February 16, 1956, at Citronelle, Ala., the son of Rufus and Helen (Steele) Hill. At an early age, the family moved to Waterloo where Herbert attended Waterloo Schools. On March 12, 1986, Herbert married Julie Howard in Iowa City. The couple moved to New Hampton in 1990 and remained there until moving to Charles City in 2003. While in New Hampton Herbert worked for Morris Landscaping, Liddle's SuperValu and most recently Dean Foods until he became disabled in 1998. Herbert enjoyed fishing, gardening, landscaping and tinkering with cars. He always considered the time spent with family and friends to be very special.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Julie of Charles City; six children, Marissa Hill, H. B. Hill, Amber Hill, Ciarra Hill and Brianna Hill all at home, and Sherrod Allen of Cedar Rapids; his mother, Helen Robinson of Waterloo; six brothers, Bobby (Norma Jean) Palimore of Des Moines, Lawrence Hill of Iowa City, Morris, Donald and Rufus (Sarah) Hill all of Waterloo, and Terrence Hill of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Charlesa Campbell-Hill of Des Moines; his wife's sisters, Jeanne and her children, Natassia and D.J. Nunley of Iowa City, Jody Howard and husband Javad Hosseini of Grenoble, France, and Jan (Pete) Wright of Eden, Vt.; his mother-in-law, Mary Ann Crandall of New Hampton; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; a granddaughter; stepfather, Hosea Robinson; and stepmother, Velma Hill.

Nancy L. Johnson

LA CROSSE, WI - Nancy L. (Gordon) Johnson, 57, of La Crosse, Wisconsin and formerly of Charles City, Iowa, died in her home Saturday, October 2, 2004, after a brief battle with brain cancer.

Nancy was born July 27, 1947 to Richard and Elsie (Holien) Gordon in Charles City, Iowa. She was baptized and was confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. She graduated from Charles City High School, class of 1965.

On August 27, 1967, she married Dennis Johnson at St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. On July 2, 1969, Nancy graduated from Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing in Waterloo and provided extraordinary care as a Registered Nurse for over 30 years, the last 20 in La Crosse, where Dr. Dennis Johnson is currently the Senior Pastor at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Nancy was actively involved in her church, and, as an enthusiastic traveler, she and Dennis recently returned from Hawaii. During their lives together they traveled extensively, visiting much of the United States as well as Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Germany.

Nancy is survived by her husband Dennis; three children, Tim (Dawn) Johnson of La Crosse, Sarah (Ryan) Holdmeyer of La Crescent, Minn., and Paul (Sarah) Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn.; parents Richard Gordon of Nashua, and Elsie Gordon of Charles City; brother LaVern (Rose) Gordon of Cedar Rapids; father-in-law Donald Johnson and brother-in-law David (Janet) Johnson of Manly, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law Alice Johnson of Charles City.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 5, at 11 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2135 Weston Street, in La Crosse. Visitation will be held Monday, October 4 from 5-7 p.m. at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street, in La Crosse, and at the church Tuesday from 10 am until the time of the service. Bishop April Ulring Larson and Rev. Kimberly Jordan will officiate, with the interment in the mausoleum at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse. In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Nancy may be given to the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.

Nancy's family would like to thank the staff at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center as well as Gundersen Lutheran Hospice for their wonderful care.


Leonard Boggess

Leonard Boggess, 88, of 302 2nd St. NE, died Friday October 1, 2004, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. Jim Stiles, First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Leonard Boggess Memorial Fund. Leonard was born May 14, 1916, in rural New Hampton, the son of Calvin and Mabel (Frazee) Boggess. He attended schools in Chickasaw County. Leonard farmed around the Charles City area for 20 years. He also worked in the maintenance department for the city of Charles City retiring in 1981. Leonard moved to Mason City in 1991.

Leonard is survived by his son, Mark Boggess of Mason City; three step-sons, Rodney, James and Raymond; five step grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; sisters, Grace Griffen of Mason City, Gertrude Hauser of New Hampton, Maebelle Stelzer of Charles City; brother, Harley Boggess and wife Daisy of Charles City; special niece, Dorothy Vandenbetter and special friend, Jennie Boggess of Mason City.

Leonard's parents, brothers, Elmer, Jack, Melvin, Vern, Lawrence and Wendell; sisters, Lillian Schmitt and Clarinda Thoe and one step-grandchild preceded him in death.


Garland Girken

Garland Girken, 74, a resident of 1606 Indiana Avenue, Charles City, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake service will be held at 6 p.m.

Garland Raymond Girken was born September 29, 1930, in Floyd County, the son of Edward "Ray" and Hazel (Springer) Girken. He graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in 1948. Garland served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On November 19, 1960, he was united in marriage to Lois Rethamel at St. Maryâs Catholic Church in New Hampton. Garland worked for over 35 years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company and then for 10 years in the hardware department at Easters. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus.Garland's hobbies included bowling, fishing and playing various games of which word games were his favorite.

Living family members include his wife, Lois of Charles City, three children, Raymond (Beronica) Girken of Ft. Dodge, Laurie (Shelly) Girken of Atlanta, Ga., and Lisa (Darren) Zellak of Lisle, Ill.; five grandchildren, Jessica, Elisha and Raymond Girken, and Abby and Anna Zellak; two brothers, Marvin Girkin of Forest Hill, Md., and Joe (Julie) Girkin of Aurora, Colo.; and a sister, Darlene Chapman of Hot Springs, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tom Girken; and a sister, Elaine Irons.

Betty A. Beck

MOLINE, Ill. - Betty A. Beck, 70, of Moline, died peacefully with her family by her side Thursday, September 30, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Services will be Monday, 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with an Eight & Forty service at 2 p.m. and an Altar and Rosary Society rosary recited at 6 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline.

Betty was born December 9, 1933, in Charles City, the daughter of Otto and Mayme Girkin Baldwin. She married Donald K. Beck, June 21, 1952 in Charles City.

Survivors include her husband, Donald; daughters and son-in-law, Pamela Hopkins, Moline, Lori Yerkey, Moline, Debra and Ron Elliott, Davenport; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Paula Beck, Jr., Tulsa, Okla., Timothy and Denise Beck, Moline, William Beck, Moline, Roger and Michelle Beck, Hampton; 12 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers, Glendon Baldwin, Moline and Irvin Baldwin, Cedar Falls.

Betty was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.


Alton M. Howe

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time for Alton M. Howe, 81, of 801 11th Street, Charles City. Alton died Sunday, October 3, 2004, in the Hospice room at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

William F. Hoffman

TUCSON, Arizona - William F. Hoffman, of Tucson, Arizona (formerly of Ionia), age 88, died on October 2, 2004.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Hoffman. He married Wilma Meyer of Bassett on June 1, 1936. They have made their home at 1170 W. Wabash, SP. 3, Tucson, AZ 85220.

He is survived by his wife Wilma; one son Robert (Dolores) Hoffman of Castle Rock, Colorado; and one daughter Janice (Marvin) Pierce of Blairsdale, California; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, William Jr.; all were killed in the Ionia tornado in 1948. Also two sisters, Marie Koenigsfeld and Lena Lemon.

Alton M. Howe

Alton M. Howe, 81, of 801 11th Street, Charles City, died late Sunday morning, October 3, 2004, in the Hospice room at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Nashua.

Doris Rolfes, 70, of Woodbury, Minn., formerly of Charles City, died Sunday, October 3, 2004, at the Woodbury Health Care Center in Woodbury, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Bethany Alliance Church, Charles City. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Doris Ann Meier was born July 17, 1934, on the family farm in rural Floyd County near Rockford, the daughter of Julius and Elma (Ernst) Meier. She was educated in the Rockford public schools and graduated from Rockford High School in 1952. She belonged to 4-H, Methodist Youth Fellowship and Rural Young People. She worked for three years in Charles City. She was united in marriage to Robert Rolfes on July 31, 1955. She loved nature, flowers, trees, walking and butterflies. She also loved textiles and music. She moved to Mankato, Minn., in 1961 and spent 30 years there. She was a member of the Mankato United Methodist Women. She then moved to Minneapolis and then Woodbury until the time of her death.

Living relatives include her sons, Robert Jr. and wife Barbara of New Braunfels, Texas, and Brian and wife Renee of Cottage Grove, Minn.; daughter Kathryn Goettl and husband Bob, Aurora, Col.; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; brother Eugene and wife Lucille Meier of Rockford; two nieces, and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant brother and two nephews.

Geraldine 'Geri' A. Simons

NEW HAMPTON - Geraldine 'Geri' A. Simons, 80, of New Hampton, died Monday morning, October 4, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at Holy Family Parish - St. Mary's center in New Hampton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4-8 p.m., at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Alton M. Howe

Alton M. Howe, 81 of 801 11th St., Charles City, died Sunday morning, October 3, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment and military graveside services will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Nashua at noon that same day.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Alton Melvin Howe was born September 11, 1923, near Nashua. He was one of four sons born to James H. and Lavina A. (Eikenberry) Howe. Alton attended rural school in Greene and graduated from Greene High School in the class of 1941.

Alton was inducted into the U.S. Navy on September 4, 1941, and served his duties during WWII mostly in the South Pacific, attaining the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class. After honorably and faithfully serving his country, Alton was formally discharged from the military on August 20, 1948.

On a Friday the 13th in 1952, Alton met his future bride and the love of his life, Leona Litterer, at a dance in Powersville, IA. The couple married a year later on June 27, 1953 at the United Church of Christ, rural Nashua. Together, they enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, creating ceramic pieces and cheering for a variety of sports teams, especially the Twins and the Vikings. Alton and Leona became the proud parents of two daughters and two sons.

Alton was a life-long resident of the Greene and Charles City area. They lived at the same address in Charles City since 1959. Alton took great pride in providing for his family. They were always the top priority of his life and he treasured attending all the family events and activities. Alton was employed as a truck driver and laborer in the road construction business and worked 'out of town' during much of his earning years. He retired from Allied Construction after 25 years with the company in 1986, however, following his retirement, Alton chose to work part-time at Allied Ready Mix.

While his family was growing up, Alton found himself the driver for his children as they fulfilled the obligations of a Sunday morning paper route. He shared his enthusiasm and love of airplanes with his family. They often traveled to many air shows and became avid spectators. His family greatly admired watching the Blue Angels and other special air exhibitionists. His family also recall Alton's wonderful sense of humor and careful tending to his yard.

In 1995, Alton and Leona had the great privilege of attending the Victory '95 WWII 50th Anniversary Celebration in Omaha, Neb., commemorating the end of WWII. Alton always remained faithful to his feelings of patriotism.

Alton was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge, both in Charles City.

Alton will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Leona Howe of Charles City; his daughter, Diana (Boyd) Dingman of Omaha, Neb.; his son, Danny (Bobette) Howe of New Liberty; his twins, Kathy Mooberry of Omaha, Neb., and Kent (Kim) Howe of Colorado Springs, Col. He will also be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren: Andrew, Darcie and Travis Dingman, Brian Petersen, and Amanda, Alexandra and Nathan Howe; his four great-grandchildren, Kirstyn, Kaitlyn and Emma Petersen and Ty Dingman and his two sister-in-laws, Dorothy Howe and Marlys Howe.

Preceding Alton in death are his parents, James and Lavina Howe, his son-in-law, Dennis Mooberry and his three brothers, Kenneth, Wilbur and Clyde Howe.

Caroline C. Gigliotti

ROCKFORD - Caroline C. Gigliotti, 87, formerly of 2574 Zinnia Avenue in Rockford and Rochester, Mich., died early Wednesday morning, October 6, 2004, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past year.

ROCKFORD - Caroline C. Gigliotti, 87, formerly of 2574 Zinnia Ave. in Rockford and Rochester, Mich., died early Wednesday morning, October 6, 2004, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past year.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 West University Dr. in Rochester, Mich. Interment will be in White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, Mich.

Clarence 'Lefty' Meyer

Clarence 'Lefty' Meyer, 91, of Charles City, died on Thursday, October 7, 2004, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Funeral Services were held Monday, Oct. 11, at the First Congregational Church, with burial at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr officiated.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, Floyd County Community Nursing, and/or First Congregational Church.

Clarence William Meyer was born May 23, 1913, in Charles City, the son of Otto and Elizabeth (Deist) Meyer. He was raised in the area and graduated from Colwell High School in 1931. He was united in marriage to Pauline Zimmer on February 7, 1937, in Charles City. He worked as a machinist with Oliver/White Farm for 40 years, retiring in 1974. He enjoyed baseball and softball, and loved fishing, hunting, trapshooting and gardening. He especially loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. 'Lefty' was a member of the First Congregational Church. He was former past president of the Oliver Athletic Association, and a coach of the Salsbury Softball Team.

Living relatives include his sons, DeWayne Meyer and wife Darlene, of Charles City, and Roger Meyer, of Davenport; three grandchildren: Denise Lampman and husband, Alan, Dawn Bray and husband, Greg, and Dan Meyer and wife, Diane; and three great grandchildren: Morgan and Kirby Meyer and Kelsey Lampman. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pauline; son, Richard; and four brothers: Harold, Lloyd, Bob and Melvin.

Daisy Pellner

OSAGE - Daisy Pellner, age 99, of Osage and formerly of Charles City, died Friday, October 8, 2004, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 11, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Lay Minister Gary Gilbert officiating. Burial was at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.

Daisy was born November 20, 1904, at Spirit Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Grandville 'Dick' and Olive Mae (Allen) Brown. She was united in marriage in 1923 to Paul Pellner in Oelwein. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, West Union and then moved to Charles City in the 1930's. Daisy worked as a cook at the Cedar Valley Hospital and at the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City until her retirement. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, quilting and her flower garden.

She is survived by two sisters: Alice Peterson of Osage and Vivian Van Valkenburg of Omaha, Neb.; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by: her parents; her husband, Paul, in 1992; three sisters: Grace Elwell, Pearl Zerke and Gladys Oelkers; and four brothers: Grant Brown, Richard Brown, Morton Brown and Ernest Brown.

GREENE - Funeral services for Ardean H. Landers, 87, of 108 South High Street, Greene, were held Monday, September 11, 2004, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene with Military Honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268, American Legion, of Greene.

Ardean Henry Herman Landers died Thursday, October 7, 2004, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene where he had been a resident for over the past two years.

Inurnment will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene. There will be no visitation as it was her wish to be cremated.

Mildred Ellen Nixt died Friday, September 24, 2004, at the Bolingreen Nursing Center in Macon, Ga.

Merle J. Boehmer

OSAGE - Merle J. Boehmer, age 44, of Osage, died Saturday, October 9, 2004, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery in New Haven. Visitation is from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage where there will be a KC Rosary at 4:45 p.m.

Merle was born July 26, 1960, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Edward and Beverly (Randall) Boehmer. Merle graduated from Osage High School in 1979. He was united in marriage to Laurie Fox on July 31, 1981, in New Haven. Merle was employed at A to Z drying for 24 years, where he was presently the plant manager. Merle loved fishing, hunting, golfing, watching Osage and Iowa wrestling, the Dallas Cowboys and Seinfeld.

He is survived by: his wife, Laurie Boehmer, of Osage; three daughters: Vanessa, Cassondra and Emma Boehmer at home; his father and mother, Edward and Beverly Boehmer of Osage; brothers and sisters: Sandy Roll and friend Rod Harang of Lake Mills, Ken Boehmer and wife Kathy of Osage, Donna Forsyth and husband Mark of Charles City, Mary Bethke and husband Carl of Osage, Jim Boehmer and wife Angie of Lake Mills; as well as 13 nieces and nephews, three great-nieces and nephews, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Dorothy Fox of New Haven

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, three uncles, an aunt and one nephew.

Clarence P. Wendl

NASHUA - Clarence P. Wendl, 88, of Nashua, formerly of Cresco and Elkader, passed away Monday evening, October 11, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. There will also be a Rosary service at 4:30 p.m. and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service Wednesday at the funeral home. Further visitation will be held Thursday from 8:45-9:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Mayme Wendl of Nashua; three sons: Gil (Connie) Wendl of Charles City, Ron Wendle of Rochester, Minn., and Steve (Cindy) Wendl of Anamosa; two daughters: Diane Foley of Rochester and Judy Bengfort of Winona, Minn.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two nephews: Dick and Joel Wendl.

Clarence was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Wendl, in 1941; his parents, Joe and Anna (Hosek) Wendl; two brothers: Eddie and Leonard Wendl.

Clarence Paul Wendl was born Sept. 20, 1916, in Cresco, the son of Joe and Anna (Hosek) Wendl. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco and later attended Loras College in Dubuque.

He was united in marriage to Mayme R. Houdek Oct. 4, 1940, at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque. He worked in the grocery business most of his live, including owner of the U-Save Grocery in Cresco from the early 1950s to 1965. They moved to Elkader in 1965, and he worked as the meat department manager in various supermarkets in Elkader, Guttenburg and Prairie du Chein, Wis. He managed St. Olaf Co-op Grocery in St. Olaf until retiring in 1984 and moving to Nashua.

Alice M. Titus

NASHUA - Alice M. Titus, 66, of Nashua, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 13, 2004, at her home in Nashua of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Little Brown Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Nashua. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Alice is survived by her husband, Derold "Jack" Titus of Nashua; one son Jeff (Virginia) Titus of Charles City; two daughters: Deb (Bob) Levad of Forest City and Peggy (Scott) Henning of Waterloo; six grandchildren: Brandon and Brady Levad, Sara and Amy Titus, and Eric and Steven Henning; one brother, Charles (Rachel) Jones of Nashua.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and May Jones.

Alice Mae (Jones) Titus was born Feb. 8, 1938, in Bradford Township near Nashua, the daughter of Jesse and May (Plantz) Jones. She was baptized and confirmed at the Little Brown Church. Alice graduated from Nashua High School as valedictorian of her class in 1956.

She was united in marriage to Derold "Jack" Titus on Nov. 3, 1956. To this union three children were born. They lived in Waverly for about four months before moving back to Nashua. Alice worked at Lutheran Mutual in Waverly for a short time. She then worked as an accountant for Shep's Standard Station in Nashua and Marzen's Standard Station in Charles City. She enjoyed making rugs, camping, fishing, walking and was an avid card player. Her family was her first love.

She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and outlook on life.


Kurt Leach

Kurt Leach, 39, a resident of Pueblo West, Colo., formerly of Charles City and Garner, died Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at Pueblo West as the result of an automobile accident.

Memorial services for Kurt Leach will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends at the church an hour prior to the memorial service.

Kurt Oliver Leach was born September 18, 1965, at Charles City, the son of Larry and Melodee (Sigler) Leach. He graduated from Garner High School in 1984. Kurt then worked for Prichard Motors and Stellar Industries in Garner before moving to Colorado. On August 28, 1998, Kurt was united in marriage to Irena Malinovsky. At the time of his death, Kurt was the proprietor of Hunters Cove Sporting Goods in Pueblo West. His hobbies included fishing and hunting. Kurt had many small and large game animals mounted in his sports shop. Kurt's two sons were always very special to him and he looked forward to spending time with them.

Living family members include his wife, Irena Leach of Pueblo West, Colo.; two sons, Hunter and Brendon both at home; his mother, Melodee (J.D.) Miller of Forney, Texas; his father, Larry (Karen) Leach of Pueblo West, Colo.; maternal grandparents, Lavern and Joyce Sigler of Floyd; two brothers, Dean White of Aurora, Colo., and Aaron (Nichole) White of Ankeny; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Leland and Florene Leach.

Terry Scott DeGeus

BRITT, Iowa - Terry Scott DeGeus, 32, of rural Britt, was wrongfully taken from his family on November 5, 1993.

Memorial service for Terry DeGeus will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 16, 2004, at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt with Rev. Dr. John Meyer officiating.

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 16, 2004, 2 hours prior to the service.

Terry Scott DeGeus, the son of Edward and JoAnn DeGeus, was born November 19, 1960, in Charles City. Terry was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Garner and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Garner.

Terry graduated from West Hancock High School in 1980. While in Jr. High School, Terry was a record holder in pole vaulting and enjoyed being a member of the wrestling team.

Terry worked for Holland Construction in Forest City and later drove semi for Schmidt Trucking of Britt. Terry also drove truck for Bud Ranken and Bud Schrotter.

Some of Terry's hobbies were playing pool, spending time with his friends and most of all spending quality time with his daughter, Ashley.

Terry is survived by his parents, Edward and JoAnn DeGeus of Britt; two sisters: Ronda Francis and her husband, Jerry of Britt and Brenda Stone and her husband, Bryan of Charles City; two brothers: Jeff DeGeus and his wife, Becky of Britt and Brian DeGeus of Orlando, Fla. Terry is also survived by his daughter Ashley of Corwith and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Terry is preceded in death by his son Westin Scott DeGeus.

Anna Mae Frein

Anna Mae Frein, 71, a resident of 1001 Clinton Street, Charles City, died Friday, October 15, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Anna Mae Frein will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Anna Mae Cross Frein was born October 17, 1932, in Charles City, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Monroe) Cross. She received her education from the Charles City High School. On November 20, 1950, she was united in marriage to Ed Frein at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Anna Mae worked for 15 years at Comprehensive Systems. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Jude Circle and Rosary Society. For 37 years she was part of the same coffee and card group. Her favorite hobbies included shopping and going to movies. Anna Mae always looked forward to spending time with her family.

Living family members include her husband, Ed Frein of Charles City; three children, Jean (Steve) Steinkamp of Boone, Jill ('Howie') Knoll of Del Rio, Texas, and Jay (Tracy) Frein of Charles City; eight grandchildren, Paul and Neil Reese, Teresa Steinkamp, Cristina Norton, Eve Knoll, and Joshua, Jeremy and Jacob Frein; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Allen (Diane) Cross of Charles City, and Jerry (Mary) Cross of Forest City; a sister, Lavon (Earl) Varner of Rock Falls; and a sister-in-law, Pat Cross of Charles City.

Her parents and a brother, Aldon Cross, preceded her in death.

Maria Justina Wiens

Maria Justina (Enns) Wiens, 84, of Charles City, died Thursday evening, October 14, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with Rev. Ruth Yeaton officiating. Private Interment will take place before the funeral at Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery, Charles City. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.

Maria was born April 10, 1920 in Mountain Lake, MN. She was born to Dietrich and Justina (Walde) Enns. Maria married Reuben E. Wiens September 22, 1939. They had five children, thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Reuben was a branch manager for Warren Transport.

Maria was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a member of the board for several years. She was also a member of the Woman's Club of Charles City and the Woman's Morning Club that met at McDonald's. Maria had a great love for children and ran a Day Care in her home for about ten years. She also helped the children in Awana's. She enjoyed going to the Salsbury Baptist Home and help mend clothes for the residents. Maria was a member and took her turn at being treasurer for the Chat A Bit Club and Kodiak Circle.

Maria is survived by five children, Judy (Ron) Bormann of Charles City; Jim (Judy) Wiens of Blaine, Minn.; Josie (Dick) Neal of Charles City; John (Gwen) Wiens of Brooklyn Park, Minn. and Joel (Wendy) Wiens of Excelsior, Minn.; thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben; her parents; a brother, Frank Enns and a sister, Katherina Heppner. Maria knew the Lord as her personal Savior and witnessed for the Lord frequently. She enjoyed her family and friends.

DuWayne F. White, 54, of Clear Lake, died Saturday October 16, 2004, at the Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. His parents are Gilman "Gil" and Donna White of Charles City.

Wanda Gillam

Wanda Gillam, 85, of Charles City, died Thursday night at home. Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City with funeral services following at 11:30 a.m.

Wanda was born in Charles City on September 15, 1919, to Hubble and Neva Smith and graduated from Charles City High School, where she enjoyed playing clarinet in the band. She later married Carl Wilkinson and they owned and managed A and W Root Beer stands in Charles City, Waverly, and Mason City. They had one son, David, and were divorced in the late 1949.

A few years later, she met Warde Gillam and both fell instantly in love. They eloped to Tulsa Okla., lived there for one year, before moving to Des Moines in 1954. They purchased a home on the eastside of Des Moines and Wanda worked for Look Magazine in the subscription fulfillment department. After the closure of Look, Communication Data Services purchased that work and she retired from CDS in 1984. At that point, she and Warde moved to her family home in Charles City and lived with her sister, Leone Dale. Within a year, Warde died from leukemia. Wanda and Leone lived together until five years ago when Wanda moved into Cedar Crest Apartments.

Wanda had struggled for the past year with a cracked pelvis, colon surgery, and a heart attack. She returned to her apartment from a nursing home on September 1.

Family was the center of her life and Warde was the love of her life. Never to be underestimated, Wanda began water skiing at age 40 and enjoyed time with Warde at their lake property in north-central Minnesota. She loved to baby sit and play games with her grandchildren, Amy and Kyle. She eagerly anticipated the Brown Family Reunion (her mother's side) in Boscobel, Wis. every Labor Day weekend. Wanda was fascinated by current and civic events, regularly hosting a party on presidential election nights. She always enjoyed reading and in her later years, she thrived on watching C-SPAN and CNN. She was a proud Democrat and took pleasure in talking about political events.

Wanda is remembered for her smile, laughter, sense of humor, and love of family. She was determined to be self-sufficient and active. She enjoyed lunches with her sister and cousins and appreciated the friendships at Cedar Crest.

Wanda is survived by her son, David Wilkinson (Elaine) of Des Moines, grandchildren Amy Davis (Christopher) of Rochester, Minn., and Kyle Wilkinson (Michelle Haught) of Des Moines, great grandchildren Nate and Ben Davis of Rochester, cousins Mavis Schroedermeier and Carma Palmer (Bernard) of Charles City, sister-in-law Norma Burch (Darrell) of Des Moines, other members of the Burch family and cousins who live out of state. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and husband. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Floyd County Memorial Hospital and the Iowa Democratic Party.

Paul H. Dralle

GREENE - Funeral services for Paul H. Dralle, 92 formerly of 405 North Second Street, Greene will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2004, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the South Vilmar Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour before services.

Paul Henry Dralle was born May 18, 1912, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a son of William and Lena (Kammeyer) Dralle, and passed away Monday, October 18, 2004, at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home.

He was baptized June 30, 1912, and confirmed April 15, 1928, at St. Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar. He received his education at the West Point No. 5 Country School.

As a young man he farmed with his father . He was united in marriage to Dorothy Louise Fick on January 16, 1937 at Vilmar. They farmed for Joe Gough in the Bristow area until 1941 when they started on their own near Greene. Mrs. Dralle died September 13, 1957. On January 7, 1961, he was united in marriage to Minerva A. (King) Barr at St. Peters Lutheran Parsonage in Greene. They farmed in the Vilmar area before moving into Greene in 1974. Minerva passed away March 20, 1997.

Paul will be remembered for his love of fishing in Canada, and for the trips that he organized to take family and friends along. Paul and Minerva enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and the Caribbean, and spending time in California. His other interests include making grand father clocks, working out in the yard, and checking what was going on at the farm. He also enjoyed going for coffee at the 'neighborhood coffee shop.'

Living family members include; two sons: Darwin Dralle of Greene, Dean (Doris) Dralle of Clarksville; two step-sons: Don (Iola) Barr of Costa Mesa, California, Ron (Pat) Barr of Dubuque; four grandchildren: Wayne (Darla) Dralle of Greene, Randy Dralle of Charles City, Michael Dralle of Laredo, Texas, Melissa Dralle of Clarksville; two great grandchildren: Amanda and Katee Dralle, 11 step grandchildren, 21 step great-grandchildren, one step-great great grandchild; a step-daughter-in law; Shirley Barr of Waverly; several sisters and brother-in law include: Minnie Kielman of Marshalltown, Lucille Newell, Jean Schaefer both of Waterloo, Edna King of Marble Rock, Dottie (Ervin) Solberg of Floyd, Geraldine Vater of Alton, Mo.; and Leonard King of Charles City.

He leaves to join his two spouses; a step son, Jimmy Joe Bar; four sisters: Minnie Kruse, Ida Heuer, Violet McNeilus and Rosamund Bruns; five brothers: Bill Dralle, Hank Dralle, Ervin Dralle, Seigfred Dralle and Lawrence Dralle; and several sisters and brothers-in-law.

DuWaynne F. White

CLEAR LAKE - DuWaynne F. White, 54, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, October 16, 2004, at the Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. His parents are Gilman 'Gil' and Donna White of Charles City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City with Rev. Carl A. Ries presiding.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Opportunity Village, in the Forum at 1200 N. 9th St. W., Clear Lake. DuWaynne Francis White, son of Gilman and Donna White was born January 31, 1950, at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.

At an early age, he became a resident of Woodward State School and Hospital for treatment of special needs people. In June 1974, he transferred to a new facility being established as Opportunity Village in Clear Lake where he lived until October 16, 2004.

DuWaynne was gifted in many ways and touched the hearts of many people.

DuWaynne, better known as 'Skeeter,' always greeted you with a big smile and hug every morning.

Some of DuWaynne's interests and activities included roller skating, swimming, coloring, folding napkins, vacuuming and helping tend to the lawns. He also participated in Special Olympics and Challenge Day. He worked at Opportunity Village doing several jobs in Shop, PPA, Memo Run, Green Pro and helping clean the cottage.

DuWaynne also enjoyed dancing at every possible event and the Surf (he could jitterbug with the best of them).

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends at Wildwood Cottage and Opportunity Village. He always brought a special ray of sunshine to everyone he came in contact with.

Survivors are his parents, Gilman and Donna White, Charles City; brother, Steve (K) of Charles City; sister, Janice (Steve) Barnett of Mesa, Ariz.; nephew, Matt Wolfe of Mesa; niece, Michelle (Chris) Lewis of Cottage Grove, Minn.; and great nephew, Ben Lewis; plus many aunts and uncles. Also, his special friend of many years, Mary French.

He was preceded in death by brother, Gerald; his paternal grandparents, Matt and Eva White of Charles City; and maternal grandparents, Bill and Tracey Ward of Titonka. Memorials may be given to Opportunity Village.

Esther M. Boyce

SOUTH PASADENA, Fla. - Esther M. Boyce, 78, of South Pasadena, Fla., died Friday, October 15, 2004, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital under the care of Hospice Of The Florida Suncoast.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Sunny Side Memorial Gardens in Charles City.

She was born in Ossian and came to Florida in 1971 from Charles City, where she was a member of VFW Post #3914 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1190. She worked in environmental services at the former Sun Bay Hospital and currently was assistant manager of Shore Drive Apartments in South Pasadena. She attended Bay Ridge Baptist Church in Seminole, Fla.

She is survived by one son, Richard E. Boyce of Holt Summit, Mo.; two daughters, Sandra L. Malohn and Pattie A. Van De Walle both of South Pasadena; two grandchildren, Nick Van De Walle of St. Petersburg, Shelly Green of South Pasadena and three great grandchildren, Cara, Bailey and Abigale.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herschel Boyce, and a grandson, Ronald Malohn.

James H. Roberts

CHETEK, Wis. - James H. Roberts, age 81, of Chetek, Wis., passed away October 11, 2004, at the Lakeview Medical Center, Rice Lake, Wis., following heart and bladder cancer complications.

Jim was born September 20, 1923, in Floyd, to Archie and Sylvia Roberts. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed overseas, and was discharged with the rank of RM2c radioman on January 1, 1946. Following graduation from A.I.B., Des Moines, he began his court reporting career, retiring after 34 years as official court reporter for the now Second Judicial District, State of Iowa. Jim was an avid golfer, fisherman, bowler and hunter, and enjoyed the best of both worlds: Wisconsin in the summer, Texas in the winter. Jim was a life member of the VFW and the Iowa Shorthand Reporters Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ann (Toman); daughter, Barbara (Fred Huntsman) Roberts, Seattle, Wash.; two sons, Robert (Shala) Roberts, Charles City and Tom Roberts, Portland, Ore.; sister Florence Harrington, Mason City; sister Norma (Bill) Hronek, Yuma, Ariz.; grandson Ryan (Shawna) Roberts, Merriam Woods, Mo.; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Sylvia Roberts; a brother, Bob Roberts; and sister and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Virgil Colwell.

Visitation was held Thursday, October 14, 2004, at the Farnham-Ours Funeral Home, Chetek, Wis., with services and military burial on Friday, October 15, 2004, at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery, Spooner, Wis.

Pauline Roloff

Pauline Roloff, 90, a resident of 602 4th Avenue, Charles City, died Monday, October 18, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Pauline Roloff will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Rick Fessell, of Temple Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Orchard Cemetery, Orchard.

Pauline Angela Byrd Roloff was born August 6, 1914, at New Providence, the daughter of Sanford and Etha Mae (Goforth) Byrd. She graduated from the Riceville High School, received her normal teachers training and taught in the Little Cedar and Riceville areas. On September 7, 1935, she was united in marriage to Merle Roloff at Waterloo. In 1942, they moved to Charles City. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Pauline was a homemaker at heart and enjoyed sewing, cooking and doing needlework.

Living family members include two children, Marston ãValä (Gail) Roloff of Woodbury, Minn., and Sue (Ron) Coffey of Council Bluffs; two grandchildren, Jason (Michelle) Roloff and Joshua (Nicole) Roloff; four great grandchildren, Jacob, Grant, Gabriel and Abigail Roloff; two brothers, Carroll Byrd of LeRoy, Minn., and Ernest (Janice) Byrd of Waterloo; a sister, Elaine Hansen of Woodbine; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Byrd of Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on July 6, 1999, and a brother, Kersey Byrd.

Elizabeth Miller

Elizabeth Miller, 89, of Clarksville, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Miller will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Charles City Assembly, 708 9th Street, Charles City. Burial will be in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville.

Lillith Elizabeth Miller was born October 10, 1915, in Butler County, the daughter of Carlyle and Ruth E. (Darby) Miller. She graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1935. By November of 1935 she was a fully trained telephone operator in Clarksville. Mid-way in her 13 years at Clarksville with Northwestern Bell she became the Chief Operator. When dial service came to Clarksville she was transferred to the Waverly business office, then to Cedar Falls and finally to the Waterloo District Engineering office where she worked 30 years of her 45 years with Northwestern Bell, retiring in 1981. Elizabeth was a born again Christian and an active member of the Charles City Assembly. She was also a member of Telecom Pioneers. Elizabeth enjoyed traveling. During her working years she traveled with her sisters in the United States and Europe and after retirement she continued traveling in the United States including Alaska and also to Nova Scotia and Japan.

Living family members include two sisters, Ada Miller of Clarksville and Corinne (Bernard) Martz of Mountain Top, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Elvera Miller of Lockport, Ill.; a niece and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Francis in 1988; and a sister, Margaret in 2001.

Evelyn M. Roberts

Evelyn M. Roberts, 93, a resident of the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, and formerly of Nevada, Iowa, died early Wednesday morning, October 20, 2004, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at the First United Methodist Church, 1036 7th St., Nevada, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Williams officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Cremation has taken place at Cremation Services of North Iowa, Mason City. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Evelyn Mae (Trisler) Roberts was born September 6, 1911 in Weldon, Iowa, the daughter of William Nelson and Florence A. (Ross) Trisler. Evelyn graduated from Weldon High School, class of 1928. She furthered her education attending and graduating from Simpson College in 1932 and later completed graduate work at Iowa State University in Ames and the University of North Iowa, in Cedar Falls. On April 15, 1933, Evelyn was united in marriage to Duane Franklin Roberts in Leon, Iowa.

Evelyn was employed as a secondary school teacher in social studies with the Nevada Public Schools for 31 years, retiring in 1976. She was involved in serving on many boards in many capacities for the First United Methodist Church. Evelyn was a member of the PEO, WaTanYe Club, a 50 year member of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma and Sorosis. She also served as a volunteer for many years at the long term care facility at the Story County Hospital, her involvement included taking part in the weekly reading program, hostess of the juice cart and calling BINGO.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her daughter, Jo Ann (Dick) Herbrechtsmeyer of Charles City; three grandchildren, Beth (Bill) Owens of Vinton, Iowa; Carrie (Geoff) Greenwood of Johnston, Iowa, and Jon (Kristi) Herbrechtsmeyer of Lino Lakes, Minn.; six great grandchildren: Meghan and Luke Owens, Mollie and John Greenwood and Abbie and Connor Herbrechtsmeyer, and her nephew, Thomas Trisler.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Duane Franklin Roberts in 1946; parents, Will and Florence Trisler and a brother, Nelson Trisler.

Mary Jayne McKenzie

NASHUA - Mary Jayne (Walsh) McKenzie, 79, of Aurora, CO formerly of Nashua passed away Saturday morning, October 23, 2004, at Hospice of Metro Denver in Aurora, Col., of cancer.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Thursday, Oct. 28, at the First Congregational Church in Nashua with Pastor David Walsh officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Friends may call at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday. Further visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Mary Jayne is survived by her husband, Harry of Aurora, Col.; two sons: David McKenzie of Oklahoma City, Ok., and Randy (Daena) McKenzie of Denver, Col.; one daughter, Pam (Allyn) Freiberet of Louisville, Ky.; two brothers: Arthur (Doris) Walsh of Altoona, Wisc., and Larry 'James' (Sharon) Walsh of Mapleton, Minn.; two sisters: Dorothy Phelps and Kay (Lenos) Connor all of Nashua; eight grandchildren; 17 nieces and nephews and 35 great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary (Kraft) Walsh and a brother-in-law, Glen Phelps.

Mary Jayne was born July 5, 1925 in Nashua, the daughter of George J. and Mary (Kraft) Walsh. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1943 and then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Ames. Mary Jayne taught school in Clarksville, Pearl Rock and Cedar Falls and later was a sales representative for Avon.

She was united in marriage to Harry J. McKenzie on may 19, 1945, in Nashua. To this union three children were born. Mary Jayne and Harry lived in Kansas City, Kan., Louisville, Ky., Fort Wayne, Ind., Oklahoma City, Ok., before moving to Aurora in 2001. She was a member of the First Congregational church in Nashua and the 1st Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, Kan., where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Mary Jayne served as secretary of the P.T.A. at Eastern High School in Louisville and was Team Leader for Avon in Fort Wayne. Her hobbies included gardening and baking 'Nana' cookies


Paul I. Coen

EVANSDALE, Iowa - Paul I. Coen, 85, of Evansdale, Iowa, died Sunday, October 24, 2004, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo after a long term illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Garden View Chapel in Waterloo, with burial in Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service at Garden View Chapel. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post #19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post #31.

He was born February 9, 1919 in Ansley, Neb., son of Robert J. and Minnie Clingerman Coen. He married Minnie Mundfrom in 1946 in New Hampton. She preceded him in death in 1974. He then married Lucille Barker Caldwell in 1975 in Waterloo.

Mr. Coen was employed at John Deere and Company as a machinist for 23 years, retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Africa, France, Belgium, Italy, the Phillipines, and at Omaha Beach during WWII. He was awarded three bronze stars and a purple heart.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille of Evansdale; three sons Lynn A. (Mary) Coen of Zearing, Iowa, Rex L. (Debbie) Coen of Waterloo, and Larry L. (Sondra) Coen of Charles City; one daughter, JoDee (Gary Neverdahl) Burgess of Chaska, Minn.; one stepson, James R. (Linda) Caldwell of Evansdale; one brother, Max Coen of Fredericksburg; three sisters, Lula Buls of Fredericka, Iowa, Janice (Bud) Theilen of Nashua and Gloria (Ivan) Johanneber of Fredericksburg; 14 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and several step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one son, Gene Coen; two brothers, Dean and Clyde Coen; and two sisters, Vivian Coen and Esther Lange.

Frances A. Batty

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford, Iowa, for Frances A Batty and her husband T. Edw Batty, who preceded her in death, July 29, 2002. Pastor Kenneth Kent will be officiating.

Frances, 94, a resident of Chautauqua Guest Homes in Charles City and formerly of Rockford, died Sunday October 24, 2004, with her daughter-in-law by her side.

Frances was born December 30, 1909, to M.D. and Nellie Cox Munshower. She graduated from Cornell College and was a homemaker all her life. She was united in marriage June 17, 1937, to T. Edw Batty they were parents of two sons John T. Batty and Dennis R. Batty. T Edw and was born to H.C. and Stella Young Batty on July 10,1907, he graduated from the University of Iowa and was in banking for 42 years, serving as president of The First State Bank, Rockford until his retirement in 1975.

They were life long members of the First United Methodist Church. Traveling, Bowling, fishing, playing bridge and golf was enjoyed by both.

Survivors include their son, John T Batty, Rockford; daughter in law, Mari Batty, West Liberty, Iowa; three grandchildren and their spouses: Jeffrey C. Batty (Jennifer) Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Jackie Gould (Rich), Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Jason R. Batty (Amy), Johnston, Iowa. There are also six great-grandsons: Javin, Jared, and Colin Batty, Mt. Pleasant. Aidan, Damien and Owen Gould, Glen Ellyn, Ill., and two great granddaughters: Skylar and Brooke Batty, Johnston; along with Jean Fort, Lompoc, Calif., a sister of Frances, and several nieces and nephews.

They are preceded in death by their youngest son Dennis R. Batty, (Dec. 2003), their parents and brothers Wilbur Munshower and Harry Batty.

Their bodies were cremated, with the Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Passmore, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday, October 26, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dorothy Passmore will be held a 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Reverend Ruth Yeaton, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Dorothy Jean Salsbury Passmore was born April 29, 1921, at Greene, the daughter of Fred and Pearl (Flynn) Salsbury. She attended school at Greene. On September 5, 1942, she was united in marriage to Henry Passmore. Henry died in 1962. Dorothy worked for many years as a housekeeper for Fred Ziebarth. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Her hobbies included sewing, needlework and working crossword puzzles.

Living family members include three sisters, Shirley Grace (Wayne) Rogers of Mason City, Pearl Eleanor (Ralph) Parr of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Floy Ellen (Leroy) Hummel of Fremont, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; three brothers, Ralph, Ray and her twin Donald Salsbury; and six sisters, Myrtle Ackley, Ruth Bowman, Hazel Salsbury, Phyllis Miller, Carol Salsbury and Beth Salsbury.
