Mason Bunn

Mason Bunn, 75, a resident of 3304 220th Street, Charles City, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be private.

Inurnment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

The Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge of arrangements.

Mason Luverne Bunn was born September 6, 1928, on the family farm in Floyd County, the son of Kenneth and Isabelle (Channer) Bunn. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1946. On August 16, 1947, he was united in marriage with Phyllis Martens at the St. John Evangelical Church in Charles City. Mason was engaged in farming and also had worked as a brick layer for Bonner and Winterink Construction and spent 10 years with Oliver-White Farm. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving fishing at Red Wing, hunting, feeding squirrels, and bird and deer watching.

Those thankful for having shared in his life include wife Phyllis; four children, Linda (Gary) Gerritson, Floyd; Vernette (Robert) Stewart, Ionia; Steve (Michelle) Bunn, Keystone; and Cherri (Dennis) Bonwell, Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) Gerritson Shimek, Michael Gerritson and fianc/â Andrea, Dustin Stewart and special friend Jennifer, Nickolas (Christina) Stewart, Jason (Vicky) Bunn, Angela Bunn and special friend Shane, Kelly Bunn and special friend Dan, Ben Bunn, Melissa Kluth, Beau Kluth, Camrean Bonwell and fianc/â Loretta, Jodi (Mark) Bonwell Bergan; and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, John Bunn.

Esther Geraghty

Esther Geraghty, 98, formerly of McGregor, Iowa, and the mother of Joyce Key of Charles City, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church in McGregor. Burial will be at a later date in McGregor.

The Thornberg Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for June Lokenvitz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Solomon Odoom, pastor of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.

June Marguerite Lokenvitz was born June 17, 1917, at Rockford, the daughter of Erwin and Nellie (Smith) Woelfer. She graduated from the Rockford High School. On November 8, 1937, she was united in marriage to Ivan Lokenvitz at Mason City. They farmed together for many years west of Charles City. She was a member of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church, West Saint Charles Homemakers Club, Farm Bureau, Friendly Birthday Club and the Friday Coffee Club. June always looked forward to spending time with her family and many friends. Her interests included reading and gardening.

Living family members include her husband, Ivan Lokenvitz of Charles City: three children, Dixie (Keith) Gettings of Denver, Colo., Judith Lokenvitz of Muscatine, and Jerald (Marge) Lokenvitz of Madison, Wisc.; six grandchildren, Deb TenBrink, Mike Hammel, Diane Bucknell, Jon Gettings, Jennifer Schwitzer and Diana Lokenvitz; five great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Robert Hammel of Charles City; two sisters, Carol Parcher of Rockford, and Betty (Mike) Schwarck of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Mary Hammel, and a sister, Roberta Inman.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church.

Elsie Rogholt

Elsie Rogholt, 95, of Charles City, formerly of Lake Preston, S.D., died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Elsie Mae Torrence Rogholt was born July 26, 1909, at DeSmet, SD, the daughter of Oscar and Ellen (Firth) Torrence. She graduated from the DeSmet High School. On July 17, 1929, she was united in marriage to Alto Rogholt at DeSmet. Elsie worked for 25 years as a clerk and bookkeeper at Swensonâs Drug Store at Lake Preston, SD. After Altoâs death in November of 1991 she moved to Charles City. She was a member of the Lake Preston Lutheran Church. Her interests included bowling and also playing bingo especially with her friend Harriet. Elsie also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Living family members include a daughter, Pat (Brian) Crane of Charles City; three granddaughters, Cheri Jaacks, Melanie Crane and Michelle Toman; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Ernster of Mitchell, S.D., and Julia Ryan of Oakes, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Beulah Rogholt, of DeSmet, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Beverly J. Kolthoff

NEW HAMPTON, Iowa - Beverly J. Kolthoff, 80, of New Hampton, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 7, at the United Methodist Church in New Hampton, with burial in the New Hampton City Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Friday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton, where there will be a 7 p.m. Remembrance Service. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.


Elinor D. Anderson

MESA, Ariz. - Elinor D. Anderson, 80, formerly of Charles City, Iowa, and Mesa, Ariz., died July 30, 2004, in Vancouver, Wash.

Services and burial will be at 9 a.m. Friday, August 5, at Mountain View Memorial Gardens Mortuary and Cemetery in Mesa, Ariz.


Clara G. Gabehart

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Word has come of the recent death of former area resident Clara Glaser Gabehart, 95, in Olympia, Wash.

She spent her early years in the North Washington and Elma areas, attending North Washington school and working as a waitress in the dining room of the Hildreth Hotel in Charles City.

Jesus "Jesse" Garcia Polanco

Jesus "Jesse" Garcia Polanco, 92, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City. Jesse was born Sept. 6, 1911, at Willis Point, Texas, to Esmerehildo and Inez (Garcia) Polanco, the only son of seven children. Jesse grew up in the Corpus Christie area of Texas, working on the fishing docks within the area. He also did farm work in Wisconsin and Iowa. Jesse moved to Charles City in the late 1960s and went to work for Sherman Nurseries. Jesse loved fishing, working on his truck and woodworking.

The family will hold gravesite services at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

Those left to cherish the memory of Jesse include: 11 children, including a son, Jorge and Linda Polanco and their sons, Jorge Ricardo and Albert Jesus Polanco of Onalaska, Wis.; one sister, Margaret Polanco Martinez, Fort Worth, Texas; two newphews, Jesse and Joe Martines, Fort Worth; and two two nieces, Margaret Martinez and Irene Valley, Fort Worth. Jesse will also be missed by Mary Tonn, his companion for 25 years and her family that loved and respected him: Linda Selvig, Bill Tonn, Mike Tonn, Donald Klock, Kelly Boggess and Laura Bymon.

Jesse was proceeded in death by his parents, five sisters and one son.

Alice Heinz

Alice Heinz, 78, a resident of 109 Hillside Drive, Charles City, died Friday, August 6, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

A funeral Mass for Alice Heinz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. today, where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Alice Marie Heinz was born January 19, 1926, at Bristow, the daughter of Henry and Hattie (Gruis) Miller. She attended country school in both Butler and Floyd counties. On June 27, 1946, she was united in marriage with John Heinz at St. Maryâs Catholic Church at Roseville. The couple farmed all of their lives on the Heinz family farm. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge and Heritage Club. Alice's interests included doing yard work, gardening, fishing and going to rummage sales. Her family was always very special to her and she took a particular interest in the grandchildren and great grandchildren attending as many of their activities as possible.

Living family members include her husband, John of Charles City; three children, Sheryel (David) Wetherell of Orchard, Sandra (Duane) Jaeger and Scott (Janit) Heinz both of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Curt Wetherell, Raina Roll, Kerry Crooks, Troy and Michael Jaeger, Samantha Ritter and Jon Heinz; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers, Daniel Miller of Greene, and Leslie Miller and special friend Eleanor, of Portland; and three sisters, Dena Hansen of Denver, Colo, Lucille Hansen of Waterloo, and Kathleen (Fred) Schempf of Lakewood, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Steven, three brothers, and a sister.

Esther N. Stiller

Nora Springs - Esther N. Stiller, 86, of Nora Springs, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Her funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 101 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with Reverend Ruth Hansen officiating. Interment will follow at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Monday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs and also for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Esther N. Stiller Memorial Fund.

Esther was born October 15, 1917 in Nora Springs, one of nine children of Frank and Pearl (Tibbits) Weaverling. She was raised and educated in Nora Springs before being united in marriage to August Stiller on January 16, 1935 at the Methodist Parsonage in Nora Springs. They farmed near Rudd and Osage before moving to a farm near Nora Springs in 1951. The couple continued to farm outside Nora Springs until 1972, when they moved into town. Esther began cooking at the dormitory kitchen at North Iowa Area Community College in 1973, and continued her work there for nearly 12 years. Esther and August enjoyed camping, fishing, and playing cards with friends. Esther also was an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress, especially fond of crocheting. She and August were members of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and the Friendly Circle, the Wig Wam Wagon Club, and several square dancing clubs.

Left to cherish her memory are three children and their spouses, June and Richard Merriss of Rockford, Wesley and Kay Stiller of Rudd, and Patty and Dennis Holtz of Rudd, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and five sisters.

Gayla J. Klimesh, 55, of Charles City, died Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Gayla Jean Smith was born November 28, 1948, in Manning, the daughter of Earl and Kathryn 'Katy' Klinzman Smith. She was raised and educated in Bagley, graduating with the 1967 class of Yale-Jamaica-Bagley Community School. She worked for Iowa State University in Ames for several years as a secretary and later continued her education with business courses at NIACC. Gayla's life was centered on her family. She was united in marriage to Ronald Klimesh on June 29, 1991. She had a passion for spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. She was active in her church, teaching Sunday school and enjoying crafts with the children. Gayla was employed as an office manager with Home Care Medical Supply for several years. She loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener and bird watcher. She and her husband traveled around the country in their motor home camping, boating, and enjoying time together.

She is survived by her husband, Ron, Charles City; daughters, Kristin (Jason) Myli, Olathe, Kan., and Sarah Allen and fianc/ Brendan McMenomy, Minneapolis, Minn.; mother, Kathryn 'Katy' (Donald) Schrad, Auburn; two grandchildren, Austin and Lauren Myli; and one brother, Glenn Smith, Ankeny.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Ethel Marian Fritcher

NASHUA - Ethel Marian Fritcher, 92, of Waverly formerly of Nashua, passed away Monday morning, August 9, 2004, at Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday at the Nashua United Methodist Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Nashua. Visitation will be Thursday from 9-11 a.m. at the church.

Ethel M. Fritcher was born December 31, 1911, in Nashua, the daughter of Simon and Mary (Schultz) Hammond. She was raised near Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1929. She taught rural schools and later graduated from Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls in 1949. She then taught school in Plainfield and Nashua.

She was united in marriage to Dale LeRoy Fritcher at the United Methodist Church in Nashua on August 10, 1952. They made their home in Nashua and Ethel continued to live there until 1991, when she moved to Mayberry Manor in Nashua. She moved to the Eichhorn Haus in Waverly in 1996. Ethel was a member of Nashua United Methodist Church for over 60 years, U.M.C. Women's Circle, Eastern Star and Isabella Club.

Ethel is survived by one sister, Ruby M. Ferguson of Waverly; one step daughter-in-law, Joan Fritcher of Clinton; two nephews, John Hammond of North Liberty and Dean Hammond of Nashua; a niece, Jean Spahr of Naples, Fla.; two step-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale L. Fritcher, December 11, 1976; a step-son, Daniel Fritcher, 1956; her parents; one brother Gale Hammond, 1989.

Larry Lee Lodge, Sr.

NASHUA - Larry Lee Lodge, Sr., 68, of Nashua, passed away Tuesday morning, August 10, 2004 at his home in Nashua of pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2004, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation will be Friday, August 13, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Larry Lee Lodge, Sr. was born July 18, 1936, in Waverly, the son of Bernard and Esther (Wedeking) Lodge. He attended Jackson #11 Country School and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1954.

He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Waidelich on June 29, 1957, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. They lived in Clarksville until 1971 when they moved to Nashua. Larry worked at Cambrex (Salsbury) in Charles City for 34 years as a reactor operator, retiring in 1998. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening and mushrooming. Larry enjoyed sharing the produce from his bountiful garden with friends and neighbors. He also was a member of Iowa Tree Top Cur & Feist, a coon hunting organization.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lodge; one daughter, Debra (Garry) Barlow of Nashua; two sons, Larry (Laura) Lodge, Jr. of Kellogg and Scott Lodge of Nashua; three grandchildren, Amber Barlow of Columbus, Neb., Adam Barlow of Nashua and Matthew Lodge of Iowa City; one sister, Beverly (Mark) Dickman of Clarksville.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kevin; and granddaughter, Stephanie Lodge.

Beverly Johnson, 65, a resident of 84 Cedar Terrace N.,Charles City, died on Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at the Salisbury Baptist Home.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 14, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City with the Rev. David Werges officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens cemetery, rural Charles City.

Beverly Ann Troge was born January 10, 1939, in Charles City, the daughter of Paul and Mabel (Brandau) Troge and one of seven children. She was raised and educated in Charles City, graduating with the Class of 1957. She married Kenneth D. Johnson on October 20, 1957, at the Covenant Mission Church, Charles City, and were blessed with four children.

Bev was employed for several years with Home Base and Caseyâs in Charles City. Her interests and hobbies varied from writing poetry, crossword puzzles and crocheting, to crafts, reading, shopping and rummage sales. She lovingly cherished the time she spent with her entire family and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Those grateful for having the privilege of sharing in her life are her children, Terry Johnson and wife, Robin, Somerset, Kentucky, Sherry Wilken and husband, Jack, Nashua, Kerry Kestner and husband, Kim, Austin, Minn., and Jerry Johnson and wife Sue, Austin, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Ardene Jorgensen, Charles City, Shirley Boggess, Waverly, Sandra Troge, Waverly; a brother, Gary Show, Waverly; and two sisters-in-law, Berneice Troge and Judy Troge, both of Charles City. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Kenneth and Jack Troge.

Everett 'Dick' Handt

Everett 'Dick' Merle Handt, 84, of Charles City, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital of cancer.

Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, 312 First Avenue, Charles City. Pastor James Grabitske will be conducting the services with burial at Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Hauser Funeral Home on Friday evening from 4-8 p.m.

Dick was born January 13, 1920, in rural Floyd County, the son of Herman and Karoline (Troge) Handt. He attended rural schools in Floyd County. On August 23, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lolita Clifford at St. Johnâs Lutheran Church near Osage. Dick worked at White Farm Oliver for 38 years before retiring in 1978. He enjoyed being with his family and visiting with friends, and had a true love for hunting and fishing. He was a charter member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was an active member for 58 years.

Mildred 'Millie' Rhodes

Mildred 'Millie' Rhodes, 82, of St. Paul, Minn., and formerly of Charles City, died on August 11, 2004 at the United Hospital, St. Paul, Minn.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries, Pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Inurnment will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Mildred Lucille Dorsey was born December 16, 1921, in Greenfield, Iowa, to John Harper and Elizabeth Pearl (Ray) Dorsey. She was raised and educated in Greenfield. On April 17, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harold Rhodes in Elko, Nevada. Millie worked throughout her life as a beautician, cashier and seamstress, and enjoyed making decorated sweatshirts. She was a 25-year member of Eastern Star, past president of Instrumental Music Parents, past president of Soroptimist International, Treasurer of the Immaculate Conception Sacred Heart Guild; Secretary of St. Catherine's Circle Carmelites, and a Hospice Volunteer.

Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Rhodes, Shoreview, Minn.; a grandson, Todd Harper Rhodes and wife Amy, St. Paul, Minn.; two great grandchildren, Bethany Michelle and Todd Harper Rhodes, Jr.; and a sister, Jean Harvey, Birmingham, Al. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Jay and Raulin, and a sister, Helen Eckardt.

Viola V. Wiltse, 88, Charles City, died on August 12, 2004, at her home.

Viola Velma Freebury was born August 29, 1915, north of Bassett, Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Della (Bell) Freebury. She was raised and educated in Chickasaw. She was united in marriage to Orme M. Wiltse Sr. on December 7, 1933, in Austin, Minn. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in the Chickasaw and Floyd areas. Viola worked for the Club Iowa Supper Club for 29 years. Viola was a member of the First Christian Church. She held a passion for playing cards, eating out for lunch, reading and talking on the phone. She especially loved spending time with children and grandchildren, family and friends.

ELMA - Lois E. Garmen, 85, of Elma, died Friday, August 13, 2004, at the Colonial manor in Elma of natural causes.

Lois Elizabeth Garmen was born March 8, 1919, in Elma, the daughter of Louis and Laura (Haaf) Diekmann. She was a 1936 graduate of Elma High School and furthered her education atgrinnell College, where she received her B.A. in English and Business and a minor in Economics, graduating June 10, 1940. She was united in marriage to Charles C. Garmen on Sept. 15, 1946. The couple resided in Elma following their marriage. She worked part time for the People's Savings Bank in Elma for several years. Followingher husband's death in 1975, she remained in Ema and resided with her brother, Edwad, until failing health sent her to the Colonial Manor in May, 2001.

Lois is survived by her daughter Susan (Steve) Heitbrink of Charles City, son Charles Garmen of New York, NY., and a brother Edward Diekmann of Elma. She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband and daughter-in-law Vicky Garmen (2003).

Pastor Palmer B. Wold

MANKATO, Minn. - Pastor Palmer B. Wold, age 87, former pastor of Badger Lutheran (Badger), Morningside Lutheran (Sioux City), St. John Lutheran (Charles City), St. Olaf Lutheran (Fort Dodge), St. Paul's Lutheran and Lake Lutheran (Renwick), died on August 18, 2004, in Mankato, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 2004, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, in Fort Dodge.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and five children: Eunice, Philip, Miriam, Deborah, James and their families.

Memorials are preferred to Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa.


Marjorie Rose Seubert

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. - Marjorie Rose Seubert, 82, and a resident of Elephant Butte since 1994, passed away at Sierra Vista Hospital in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, on Friday, August 20, 2004.

Marjorie was born on January 21,1922, in LaCrosse, Wisc., to Anthony and Hattie Wateski. Marjorie was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Edward F. Seubert, of the family home; a son, Jim E. and wife, Mechele Seubert of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three grandchildren: Jeffrey, Jason and Jeremy; and three great-grandchildren: Kyle, Kaitlyn and Michael.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be held at a later date to be announced.

Robert Ray "Bob" Crooks, age 84, of Charles City, died Saturday, August 21, 2004, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with Pastor Paul Wilcox officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua, with Robert J. Crooks, Rodney Crooks, Richard Crooks, David Crooks Jr., James Robert Crooks, Kevin Crooks, Darin Crooks, Dustin Crooks and Jeff A. Crooks as casketbearers. Jeffrey T. Crooks (deceased grandson) will be the honorary casketbearer.

Robert Ray "Bob" Crooks was born September 19, 1919, in rural Chickasaw County, near Ionia. Bob was the youngest of nineteen children to George W. and Rozanna (Huffman) Crooks. He attended rural country school through the eighth grade.

On January 17, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Bob married Eva Mae Rudebeck. The couple initially lived in Gladbrook where Bob farmed. The couple then moved to Charles City where Bob worked for the Illinois Central Rail Road for four years. Following his railroad experience, the couple started farming near Rudd for 18 years. In 1962, they moved to Charles City and continued to farm until retirement in the late 1980's. Eva passed away on June 6, 1988.

Bob loved dancing and going to the Moose Lodge, of which he and Eva were long-time members. He enjoyed trout fishing, traveling and time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his five sons: Alden (Dorothy) Crooks of Rudd, Keith (Darlene) Crooks of Dubuque, David (Maralee) Crooks of Cedar Falls, Ronald (Denise) Crooks of Charles City and Kenneth (Mary) Crooks of Charles City; two daughters, Jan (Duane) Wheat of Bremerton, Wash., and Diana Reams-Clites (Bob) of New Hampton; 21 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eva; one son, Gerald Lynn in 1946; one granddaughter, Mary Crooks; one grandson, Jefferey T. Crooks; one great-granddaughter, Alexandria Crawford; one son-in-law, Richard "Dick" Reams; and 18 brothers and sisters.

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Leona Kerulis, 91, of Dubuque and formerly of North Lake, Ill., Spencer, Iowa, and Charles City, died Sunday, August 22, 2004, at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab .

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Dubuque, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, River Grove, Ill.

Leona was born March 17, 1913, in Pocahontas, Iowa, to Adam and Mary Jane (Cullen) Weber. She married Frank A. Kerulis on June 2, 1939, in Ayrshire, Iowa. Frank passed away on June 28, 1965. in Elmhurst, Ill.

Leona worked at J.C. Penney as a sales clerk until she retired in 1978. She loved her family and enjoyed every minute spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Living family members include: a son, Frank A. (Nola) Kerulis Jr. of Dubuque; two grandchildren: Catherine (Sam) Theodore of El Cajon, Calif., and Victoria (Robert) Knochenmus of Allen, Texas; four great-grandchildren: Katharine, Elizabeth, Grace and Matthew Knochenmus of Allen, Texas; and a brother, George Weber of Ayrshire, Iowa.

Mary Irene Stoffels Rapp Matthes was born April 3, 1917, at Saint Paul, Minn., the daughter of Mathias and Mary Grace (Cook) Stoffels. She graduated from Santa Monica High School, Santa Monica, Calif. In 1935 Irene married Albert Rapp. Seven children were born to that union. A later marriage to Harold Matthes resulted in moving from Faribault, Minn., to Floyd in 1948. Two children were born during the family's stay in Floyd. The family moved to Charles City during the 1960's. Irene resided in Charles City until 2002 when she moved to Topeka. She retired from her position as head cook at the Chautauqua Nursing Home in 1979. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Catherine's Circle, and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her favorite pastimes included cooking, reading, and spending time with her family.

Living family members include four daughters, Vali (Mark) Reams of Topeka, Kan., Eileen (John) Caldwell of Salt Lake City, Utah, Marge (Jim) Reed of Greene, and Paula Jacobson of Mason City; two sons, Don (Sharon) Rapp of Yuma, Ariz., and Tony Matthes of Cedar Falls; 26 grandchildren; 57 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Cummings of California, and Elaine Hendricks of Texas.

Ernest Vetter

Ernest Vetter, 72, a resident of 908 Cedar Street, Charles City, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Ernest Vetter will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside.

Ernest Alfred Vetter was born November 9, 1931, at Carrville, the son of Alfred and Helen (Gutzmer) Vetter. He graduated from the Nashua High School in 1949. Ernest served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. During his time of service he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On February 2, 1958, he was united in marriage to Maxine Vietor at Charles City. Ernest farmed, worked at Oliver White Farm Equipment Company and also operated Vetter Trucking. He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Disabled American Veterans of Mason City and the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Nashua.

Ernest's favorite pastimes included hunting, watching television, reading, playing cards, listening to country music, driving the tractor and driving around the country looking at farms. His family was always very important to him and he looked forward to spending time with them.

Living family members include his wife, Maxine Vetter of Charles City; a daughter, Barb (John) Dotson of Charles City; and two sons, Jerry (Georgena) Vetter of Charles City, and Sgt. Major William (Sharon) Vetter of Jacksonville, NC; three grandchildren, James Dotson, Matthew Vetter and Garrett Vetter; three sisters, Edna (Art) Kohls of Greene, Marian (Jim) Large of Tulsa, Okla., and Helen Stonecypher of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

Otto Augustus De Walle, Jr. was born February 29, 1924, at Cresco, the son of Otto A. and Mabel Marie (Werhan) De Walle, Sr. He graduated from Assumption High School in Cresco. Otto served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. During that time he served in the Philippines and New Guinea. He was awarded three bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal. During the Korean conflict he also served in Germany. Otto was always very proud of the time he spent serving his country. On August 8, 1949, he was united in marriage to Glendola ãDodieä Cross at St. Maryâs Catholic Church, Roseville. Otto worked at Pederson Cleaners for twelve years and then for Salsbury Laboratories until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a life time member of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included reading, playing golf and cards, bowling, working word puzzles and watching John Wayne movies. He was also an avid Hawkeye basketball fan.

Living family members include his wife, Glendola ãDodieä De Walle of Charles City; a daughter, Sandy (Bob) Lauen, of Ventura; a granddaughter, Kim (Erik) Dorenkamp of Norwalk; a grandson, Nicholas A. (Christelle) of Ventura; and a great grandson, Ethan Dorenkamp.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Francis De Walle; and a sister, Anna Mae Lampman.

Eugene Galant

TEMPE, Ariz. - Eugene Charles Galant Jr., 61, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 29, 2004, after a six-week battle with acute leukemia. A 40-year resident of Tempe, Ariz., he was surrounded by loved ones at his home at the time of his death.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife Karen; his two daughters: Gina and husband Brian Yingling of Waddell, Ariz. and Vicky and husband Robert McLaughlin of Des Moines; and five grandchildren: Ericka, Robby and Savannah McLaughlin, and James and Brianna Yingling. He is also survived by his father, Eugene Sr., of 109 Chautauqua, Charles City; sisters Donna (Marty) Osier, Cedar Rapids, and Patricia Tillapaugh, Denver, Colo.; and brothers Vernon (Grace) Galant, Preston and Gary (Vicki) Galant, Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel.


Jonalie "Lee" Gorman

NEW HAMPTON - Jonalie "Lee" Gorman, 40, of New Hampton, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the First Baptist Church in New Hampton with Reverend Kevin Frey, Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, officiating. Inurnment will be in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Family will greet friends from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and an hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Jonalie Gorman was born March 12, 1964 in New Hampton, the daughter of John W. and Susan (Knight) Kolthoff. She was a 1982 graduate of the New Hampton High School and went on to graduate from North Iowa Community College in Calmar in 1984 with a degree in accounting. Following her schooling she went to work for the Farmers Coop in New Hampton from 1984 to 1998. In 1998, she began working as the office manager for Cayman Island Condos in Nashua, where she was presently employed. On April 29, 1989, Jonalie was united in marriage to David Gorman at the First Baptist Church in New Hampton. The couple later divorced. She was a lifelong resident of New Hampton.

Lee lived for her two boys and loved to watch them play, take them to Skateboard Parks, and just seeing them enjoy themselves. She loved spending time with family and friends, and her special friend, Eric Meyer. She also enjoyed scrap booking, exercising, and shopping on E-Bay. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She will be deeply missed by everyone that has ever known her.

Jonalie is survived by her mother Susan Hastings of New Hampton; two sons, Jonathon David Gorman and Jason Lee Gorman; two sisters, Sherean (Tony) Barton of Minneapolis, Minn. and Nancy (Brian) Sires of Cedar Falls; paternal grandmother Arlene Kolthoff of Charles City; paternal step-grandmother Glenna Hastings of Elma; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father John W. Kolthoff; step-father Gary L. Hastings; two sisters, Roxanne Kolthoff and Michelle Kolthoff in infancy; maternal grandparents Arnold and Irene Knight; paternal grandfather Robert W. Kolthoff; paternal step-grandfather Robert Hastings.

Reid LeRoy Chestnut

Reid Chestnut, 81, of Clarksville, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Unity Presbyterian Church in rural Clarksville, with Rev. Reuben Topp officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, is in charge of the arrangements.


Robert A. Rodamaker

Nashua - Robert A. Rodamaker, 80, of Nashua passed away Thursday morning, August 26, 2004, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post # 6792. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, and from 9-10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. There will be a Rosary service at 2 p.m. and a Scripture service at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Robert is survived by his wife, Lenore; one sone, David (Danielle) Meyer of Shingle Springs, Calif.; two daughters, Kathy (Kurt) Hoeft of Charles City and Sandy (Vernon) Johnson of Davenport; five grandchildren, Dominque and Dalton Meyer, Sarah, Chris and Katie Hoeft; one brother, David Rodamaker of Charles City.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Richard and James Rodamaker; three sisters: Betty Bonzer, Mary Jones and Lillian Fisher.

Robert Arnold Rodamaker was born November 22, 1923, in Carrville, Iowa, in Floyd County, the son of Myron and Clara (Wiltse) Rodamaker. He attended elementary school in Carrville and high school in Charles City. He served with the U.S. Army in Panama from 1942-1945.

He was united in marriage to Lenore Dickhausen May 3, 1948, in Charles City. They lived in the Charles City area for three years before moving to Nashua. They built a new home on their acreage north of Nashua and moved there in 1979. They moved to their present home in Nashua in July of 2000. Bob worked at a number of jobs before starting at the Oliver Corp. in Charles City. He remained there for the next 25 years, where he was a foundry worker. He retired in 1981.
