Geraldine M. Schultz

NASHUA - Geraldine M. Schultz, 72, of Nashua, died on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, in Rochester, Minn. A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Nashua. She has donated her body to science.

Geraldine was born May 14, 1930, in Rockford, the daughter of Carl and Louise Janssen. She was united in marriage to Leroy (Bud) Schultz in 1948. After retiring from the Riverside Chautauqua Nursing Home she continued to work part-time selling the county atlas. Geraldine enjoyed spending time helping and being with her family, friends, and neighbors.

Geraldine is survived by her husband, Leroy of Nashua; a son, Craig Schultz of Bassett; two daughters, Diane Graham of Rose Hill, Kan., and Teri Hammond of Mason City; a brother, Gordon Janssen of Morgan, Texas; two sisters, JoAnn DeGeus of Britt and Doris Hicok of Mason City; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Elmer and Roger Janssen; a sister, Pearl Griffin.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City


Allen Porter Kellogg

Informal graveside services will be held for Allen Porter Kellogg, Thursday, Sept. 12, at 4:30 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery. In case of rain the service will be in the cemetery chapel. Please bring a chair if standing is difficult. Pastor Gayle Wilcox of the Trinity United Church will assist with the service.

Allen Porter Kellogg was born Nov. 25, 1921, the son of Inez and Tom Kellogg. He received his education in Charles City, and graduated in 1939. On Oct. 3, 1942, he and Doreen Shufelt were married in the St. Louis Methodist Church. They were the parents of two sons, Tom and Steve. Port was active in the community and involved in Scouting with his sons. Other activities included the Elks Club (Exalted Ruler), First Methodist Church (MYF leader), American Legion, Masonic Lodge, the Sunrisers Kiwanis Club (secretary), and the Knights of Pythias. He owned Ridgeway Grocery and was Floyd County Treasurer for 26 1/2 years. After their retirement, the Kelloggs moved to the Tulsa, Okla., area.

Port was in the service from June 18, 1942, until his honorable discharge on Oct. 9, 1945. He served in the East Air Force during WWII as a T/5 A.S. 532nd Bomb Squadron, 381st Bomb Group. He was a radio operator and gunner 757. Port was wounded when his plane was shot down on his 13th mission over Germany. He was held as a prisoner of war in Austria for 22 1/2 months. During his time in prison he almost died. Port received the European African and Middle Eastern ribbon with one Bronze Star, four overseas bars, Purple Heart, Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, and air crew badge. Later he became active in the POW organizations and started the NE Iowa American POW group. He was a member of the National EX POWs and was a member of the Tulsa Chapter of POW at the time of his death.

Port died of Alzheimers and Parkinson disease. Besides his wife, Doreen, he is survived by his son Tom (Liz), Steve's wife Kathy and grandchildren Travis, Annette, Audrey, and Alicia. Also surviving are a brother Max (Gladys), and sister-in-laws Marjorie Kellogg, Margaret Shufelt, Evelyn Lee, and Dorothy (Rusty) Boyle and many nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death were his son, Steve; his parents, Ines and Tom Kellogg; his brothers Wen, Ken, Lyn and an infant brother and sister.

Everyone who knew Port dearly loved him and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends.


Vernon Catchpool

Vernon Catchpool, 64, a resident of 101 Dixie Drive, Nashua, died Friday, September 6, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Vernon Catchpool will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Joann Kramer, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Nashua, will officiate. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lowell Town Cemetery rural Clarksville.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Vernon Roger Catchpool was born May 29, 1938, at Shell Rock, the son of Roger and Viola (Orth) Catchpool. He graduated from the Shell Rock High School. Vernon served in the United States Navy. On December 1, 1962, he was united in marriage to Judy Foster at Charles City. Vernon worked as a truck driver. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Among the things he enjoyed most were motorcycles, fishing, hunting, flying, and casinos.

Living family members include his wife, Judy of Nashua; two daughters, Sheryl Martin and husband John of Hutchinson, MN, and Chris Catchpool and husband Rod Fisher of Charles City; a son, Mike Catchpool and wife Mindy of Muscatine; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Karen VanHauen and husband Bob of Floyd, and Carol Brown and husband Eugene of Plainfield.

His parents preceded him in death.


Louise Wright

NASHUA--Louise Wright, 85, passed away at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Friday morning, Sept. 6, 2002, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City. Visitation was on Sunday at the Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua and will be one hour before the time of service at the church on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Louise was born in rural Nashua on Dec. 30, 1916 to Louis and Anna (Brugger) Legel. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1934 and attended Iowa State Teacher's College, earning her teaching certificate. Louise taught at the Flint Country School and Bradford Country School for five years.

She was united in marriage to Alden Wright on June 2, 1940 at the UCC/Pleasant Hill Church, and became a farmwife.

Those left to cherish her memorial include her husband, Alden, of Nashua, two sons; Larry (Jan) Wright of Northwood, and Jim Wright of Bonita Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren; one brother, Edwin Legel of Nashua; one sister; Esther Darrow of Charles City.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna Legel and a sister, Elsa Stille.


Geraldine (Gerry) Spyr

Geraldine (Gerry) Spyr, 88, left this world on Aug. 23, 2002. Born June

11, 1914, in New Hampton, she was the youngest of five children born to John and Mathilda McAloon.

Preceded in death by parents and siblings; husband Clyde John Spry; and son William (Billy).

Survived by son David Spyr of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Toni (George) DuFour of Minneapolis, Minn.; former daughter-in-law Estella Jean Spry of El Segundo, Calif.; grandchildren: Jeffrey Spyr of Anchorage, Alaska, Stephanie Spry of El Segundo, Calif., Specialist William DuFour, US Army, presently based near Frankfurt, Germany, Michelle (Eric) Anderson of St. Paul, Minn., Renee (David) Fitzgerald, David DuFour and Daniel DuFour all of Minneapolis, Minn.; great-grandchildren: Cody and Colton Spyr, Ellie and Charlie Anderson.

Gerry took enormous pride in her Iowa heritage. She was a longtime resident of Charles City and an active member of Immaculate Conception parish. Due to a change in her health status she has lived in Minneapolis under her daughter's care for the past four years. While living in Charles City, Gerry enjoyed an active career in retail sales, continuing to work well into her seventies. She was an avid golfer and spent many happy hours with good friends at Wildwood Golf Course, always hoping to "break fifty". Gerry will be lovingly remembered by her warm smile, hearty infectious laugh and vivacious enthusiasm for life.

Family will gather for a celebration of her life at her daughter's home in Minneapolis. Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer's Association or Immaculate Conception Church. May God speed her on her journey until we meet again.


Robert "Bob" Schrage

Robert "Bob" Schrage, 63, a resident of 1835 Glass Avenue, Rudd, died Sunday, September 8, at the University Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Schrage will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford. The Rev. Patricia Shaw, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

Robert Deane Schrage was born August 6, 1939, at Ottumwa, the son of Paul and Ida (Mueller) Schrage. He graduated from Rudd High School in 1956. On November 4, 1962, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Gerber at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church rural Osage. They farmed all their lives in the Rudd area and in recent years "Bob" also worked with road construction. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. "Bob" enjoyed spending time with his family leaving special time for the grandchildren, spending time outdoors, and restoring tractors.

Living family members include his wife, Evelyn of Rudd; four daughters, Carmen Staudt and husband Bill, and Lisa Lines both of Rockford, Judy DeGraw and husband Steve of Rockwell, and Suzie Ross and husband Brian of Charles City; ten grandchildren, Alisha and Nate Staudt, Chris, Kyle, and Cole Lines, Josh and Mackenzie DeGraw, Macy, Madison, and Brianna Ross; and a sister, Sandy Brandt of Mason City.

His parents preceded him in death.


Verne Daman

Funeral services for Verne Daman of Clarksville, formerly of Cresco, Shell Rock and Waterloo, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 9 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waterloo with Rev. Patti Eastman officiating.

Interment was in State Line Cemetery, Harmony, MN. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Verne, 88, died Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at Community Nursing Home, Clarksville of Parkinson's disease.

Verne Eugene Daman was born January 1, 1914 on a farm in Orleans Township, Winneshiek County, near Cresco, the son of George Newton and Ollie Elizabeth (Salisbury) Daman. He was baptized, confirmed and was a member of Cresco United Methodist Church. He attended school in Cresco.

On June 7, 1933 he married Alta Viola Barnes in New Hampton. While in Cresco, Verne worked for the Cresco Nursery, Howard County Road Work, Bergfalk Furniture, Del Larson Furniture, and Sears. When Alta moved into the nursing home in 1987, Verne moved into an apartment in Clarksville, until he moved into the nursing home in 2000.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting rocks, and gardening.

He is survived by two daughters: Phyllis Heeren of Shell Rock and Shirley Daman of Clarksville; one son: Neil of Round Rock, TX; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister: Bonnie Jean Woods of Omaha, NE; and one brother: Leonard of Cedar Falls.

Verne was preceded in death by his wife Alta on March 18, 1998; his parents; and one brother: Norbert


Jennifer Meyers

Jennifer Meyers, 10, a resident of 808 10th Avenue, Charles City, died Tuesday, September 10, 2002, as the result of a semi-truck and bicycle accident.

Funeral services for Jennifer Meyers will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the First Baptist Church in Charles City. The Rev. Ruth Yeaton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. Visitation will continue from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and an hour prior to the services at the church.

Jennifer Anne Meyers was born July 1, 1992, at Keokuk, the daughter of Gene and Sandy (Howe) Meyers, and was baptized when she was seven at the New Testament Christian Church at Keokuk. She attended Lincoln Elementary School where she was in the fifth grade. Jennifer was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kids Club, and the Junior Jammers Girl Scout Troop. She enjoyed music, reading, helping her sisters, riding her bicycle, and playing games. Alice, the cat, was also very special to Jennifer.

Living family members include her mother, Sandy Meyers of Charles City; father, Gene Meyers of Charles City; two sisters, Amy and Elizabeth Meyers both at home; maternal grandparents, Dan and Alice Howe of Robbinsville, NC; and paternal grandmother, Georgia Meyers of Carthage, IL.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Gene F.


Lorraine Ritter

Lorraine Ritter, 73, a resident of 2571 270th Street, Greene, died Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Lorraine Ritter will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Msgr. Stanley Hayek, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday where the St. Catherine Circle will recite the Rosary at 4:30 p.m., and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday an hour prior to the service.

Lorraine Kathleen Feltz Ritter was born April 15, 1929, at LeRoy, Minn., the daughter of Norman and Beatrice (Schellenberg) Feltz. She attended the Floyd High School. On July 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wallace Ritter at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. They farmed all their lives south of Charles City. Lorraine worked for several years at the Starr Home in Charles City. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Catherine's Circle, Navy Mothers, and the Heritage Club. Lorraine was associated with the Foster Grandparent program at The Learning Center. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, canning, and working crossword puzzles. Lorraine was known to many as "mom."

Living family members include her husband, Wallace of Greene; six children, David Ritter and wife Betty of Seattle, Wash., Steven Ritter and wife Helene of Chesterfield, Mich., Thomas Ritter of Twin Falls, Idaho, Phillip Ritter and wife Cheryl of Ocala, Fla., Craig Ritter and wife Susan of Charles City, and Kevin Ritter of Greene; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, Vernon Feltz of Charles City, Duane Feltz and wife, JoAnn, of Allison, and Kenneth Feltz and wife, Diane, of Woden; four sisters and their husbands, Bernice and Virgil Petersen of Pipestone, Minn., Beverly and Bert Sorensen of Grand Meadow, Minn., Patricia and Gaylan Lynch of Charles City, and Sharon and Richard Bilharz of Great Falls, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Carolyn Ritter, and two brothers, Stanley and Harlen Feltz.


Essell Walther

NASHUA - Funeral services for Essell Walther, 76, of Nashua. are pending at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua following his death Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.


Leonard C. Pfefferkorn

APACHE JUNCTION. Ariz. - Leonard C. Pfefferkorn, 79 of Apache Junction, Ariz. and formerly of Charles City, passed away on September 10, 2002.

He was born in Charles City, March 29, 1923, to Leonard and Alma (Jung) Pfefferkorn. He was united in marriage to Doris Westergard on May 14, 1945. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. Leonard was employed at Salsbury Laboratories and Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

He and his wife resided in Ft. Collins, Colo. from 1974-1976, when they moved to Big Fork Mont. In September, 1994, they moved to Apache Junction, Ariz.

Leonard is survived by his wife Doris, daughter Mrs. Linda (Jim) Bartlett, Kalispell, Mont., son John (Debbie) Pfefferkorn, Lakeside, Mont.; grandchildren Josh and Jacy Bartlett, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 step-greatgrandchildren, half brother and sister Harold Barkhausen and Mrs. Evelyn (Bernard) Smith, Waverly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, half brother Robert and Uncle Mr. and Mrs. Herman (Lillie) Begeman with whom he lived during his high school years.

Apache Junction Mortuary, Apache Junction, Ariz., was in charge of arrangements.


Fannie Hillis

Fannie Hillis, 94, a former resident of 2464 145 Street, Floyd, died Thursday, September 12, 2002, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

Funeral arrangements for Fannie Hillis will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Solomon Odoom, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue Monday at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until service time.

Fannie Cleo Mullikin Hillis was born September 26, 1907 at Platteville, Wisc, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann (Dowling) Mullikin. She received her education at Waseca, Wisc. On March 7, 1931, she was united in marriage to Orville Hillis at Dubuque. They farmed near Floyd since 1943. Orville died on Nov. 16, 1969, and Fannie remained on the farm until last fall. Holcomb Springs was located on their farm and became known for picnics, and camping for Boy Scouts. Fannie was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, all aspects of farm life, and feeding the birds and squirrels. Her family was very important to her and she liked spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren and great grandchildren

Living family members include two sons and their wives, Keith Hillis and wife Phyllis of Charles City, and Marlyn Hillis and wife Marilyn of Floyd; five grandchildren, two step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a sister, Maude Chrisinger, of Taylor, Wisc.

Her parents, husband, a grandson, Steven Hillis, three sisters, and four brothers preceded her in death

Barbara "Bobbi" Botterbrodt

GREENE - Barbara Ann "Bobbi" (Reed) Botterbrodt, 56, of Mammoth Spring, Ark., formerly of Greene died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at her home in Mammoth Spring, Ark. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today, Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Calvary Baptist Church in Greene with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to services. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Bobbi Botterbrodt Memorial Fund in care of the family at P.O. Box 431, Mammoth Spring, Ark., 72554-0431.

Johnnie W. Beck

NASHUA - Johnnie W. Beck, 82, passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with burial to follow in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Johnnie was born June 25, 1920 in Floyd County to Lee and Helen (Bullen) Beck. He was educated in country school through the eighth grade.

He was united in marriage to Wilma C. Ebding Nov. 7, 1943 at the United Church of Christ/Pleasant Hill in rural Nashua. He farmed and worked for White Equipment Co., retiring from the Heat Treatment Department in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma; two daughters: Myrna (Donald) Greene of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Jeanne (Gary) Olson of Nashua; two sons: Charles (Kathy) Beck of Zumbrota, Minn., and Robert (Joyce) Beck of Nashua; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; Michelle (Joe) Gribben and Amanda and Matthew of Eden Prairie, Minn., Eric (Kim) Olson and Kallie and Kacey of New Hampton; Brad (Andie) Olson and Drew and Rylie of Osage, Jason Beck of Rochester, Minn., Douglas Beck and Michael Beck of Zumbrota, Minn., and Travis Beck of Nashua; one brother; Donald (Betty) Beck of Moline, Ill.; three sisters: Beth Bahlmann of Charles City, Lois (Virgil) Eckenrod of Rudd and June (Daniel) Franzen of Nashua; his mother-in-law, Clausine Ebding of Charles City; a brother-in-law, Robert Oleson of Charles City.

Johnnie was preceded in death by one sister, Velma Oleson; his parents and his father-in-law William Ebding.

Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home of Nashua is in charge of arrangements.


Essell Walther

NASHUA -- Essell Walther, 76, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 in Keokuk County as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika, Iowa, with burial in St. Paul's UCC Cemetery in Denver, Iowa.

Essell was born Aug. 30, 1926 in West Union to Ernest and Nellie (Markley) Reasland. She graduated from Osage High School in 1947.

She was married to Lyle Christensen at the Methodist Church in Osage in 1949. They later divorced and she married Harold Walther in 1985 at St. Paul's UCC in Denver.

She was a Licensed Practical Nurse, and graduated from NIACC in 1981. Essell was also active in Eastern Star.

Essell is remembered by her five children: Larry (Lora) Christensen of New Hampton, Richard (Sandy) Christensen of Nashua, Marvin (Kelly) Christensen of Fredericksburg, Steven Christensen of Charles City, Kim (Doug) Wadey of Clarksville; one brother: Clyde (Effie) Reasland of Evansdale; one sister: Charlotte (Bob) Marvin of Humboldt; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Walther in 1987, her parents, Ernest and Nellie (Markley) Reasland; a son: Allen Christensen in 1965; six half-brothers and eight half-sisters.

Richard Uker

Richard Christian Uker, 62, of 206 2ND Ave. S.W., Rockford, died Tuesday Sept. 17, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Sept. 21, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Rockford. The Rev. Tom Heeley of Hospice will be officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford with full military rites.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday Sept. 20, 2002, at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main St., Rockford. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Richard C. Uker Memorial Fund.

Richard was born March 3, 1940, in rural Cerro Gordo County, the son of Roger and Dora (Paulsen) Uker. Richard graduated from Rockford in 1958. Richard joined the Army on Sept. 26, 1961, in Des Moines, serving in Vietnam, and received an honorable discharge on Sept. 1, 1964. in FT Hamilton, N.Y. In 1996, Richard was united in marriage to Linda White at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford. Richard lived in the Rockford area his entire life while working for Salsbury Laboratory in Charles City in the Waste Treatment Department. Richard was a member of the Rockford Saddle Club. Richard enjoyed fishing, hunting, and building things. Richard loved telling stories to family and friends, and driving around looking at wildlife. Richard will be missed dearly by family and friends.

Richard is survived by his mother, Dora; his wife, Linda, of Rockford; three children; Ryan and his wife, Charlet, of Rockford, Roger and his wife, Michelle, of Rockford, and Shawn and his wife, Jackie, of Nora Springs; 5 step-children, Brian Brandau and his wife, Teresa, of Mason City, Lori Walczyk and her husband, John, of Bondurant, Jeff Haley and his wife, Kim, of Manly, Jesi Peterson and her fiance, Travis Holste, of Mason City, Jodi Peterson, of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren, Shane, Caylor, Chelcie, Christian, Cody, Casey, Josh, Alex, Cody, Colton; grandpa Dick to, Tristan, Sierra, Betsy.

Thelma Salisbury Deneau 

Thelma Salisbury Deneau, age 85, of Roseville, Minn. was born in Oberlin, Kan., on Dec. 9, 1916, and passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002. She worked many years at the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper. She was a founding member of the St. Paul Sweet Adelines chorus and with her husband was active in both Sweet Adelines and Barbershop. A memorial service will be today, Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minn.

She was preceded in death by parents, Wheeler W. and Blanch Musser of Charles City; husband, Arthur Deneau, and son, W. Evan Salisbury of St. Paul, Minn.

She is survived by brother and wife, Elwin and Elsie Musser of Mason City; and sister, Elaine Butterfield of Spring Park, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

Raymond G. LaCoste 

RUDD - Raymond G. LaCoste, 81, of 632 Floyd St., Rudd, died Saturday Sept. 21, 2002, at his home in Rudd. Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Rudd, with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd. Visitation will be today, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel in Nora Springs, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Raymond was born April 2, 1921, in Niles, the son of William and Emily (Gallop) LaCoste. He married Iris Thompson June 14, 1950, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. Raymond farmed in the Greene and Hampton area, drove truck and later was employed at Westway Consolidated in Rudd. He has been a life long resident in the Rudd area. Raymond enjoyed his pets, gardening and especially being with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Iris LaCoste, Rudd; seven children Diana Mentzer, Omaha, Neb., Alan LaCoste and his wife Sharon, Rudd, Karen Garrity and her husband Rod, Viola, Wis., Theresa Schwem, Greene, Barb Noss and her husband Kelly, Dougherty, Gail Krull and her husband Dan, Rockford, and Laura Hunt and her husband Steve, Bristol, Wis.; twenty-two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother Gilbert LaCoste and his wife Betty, Floyd, and sister-in-law Hilda LaCoste, Osage.

His parents, sons David and Michael LaCoste; son-in-law Marvin Mentzer; grandson Derek Spanjer; one brother Donald LaCoste and one sister Joyce Kleen preceded him in death.

Sheckler Colonial Chapel in Nora Springs is in charge of arrangements.


Merle E. Culbertson

Merle E. Culbertson, 104, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at 10:30 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastors Marcia Kifer and James Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, from 2 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be left to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

Merle Edith Culbertson was born on Nov. 27, 1897, the daughter of William and Matie (Lubiens) Getts in St. Ansgar, the youngest of three children. She was baptized on April 12, 1912, at the First Baptist Church in Waverly and confirmed in March of 1924 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly.

In 1906, the family moved to Waverly, the place that has been her lifetime home. She attended the Waverly schools. After high school, she was employed as a bookkeeper for the Waverly Gas Company and Willow Lawn Farm. In 1917, she went back to school and attended Wartburg Commercial Department to improve her business skills. Following her education, she went back to work for the Waverly Gas Company and Willow Lawn Farm. She later accepted a position as a bookkeeper with the Waverly Publishing Company, publishing the Waverly News Papers and several poultry magazines. On Sept. 7, 1921, she was united in marriage to Floyd V. Culbertson in Waverly. To this union, two children were born, Bonnie Adele and John Dale.

Merle's activities outside of homemaking have included acting as chairman of her church circle when the group published a cookbook, past President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Executive Secretary of the Bremer County Red Cross for fifteen years, and Field Director of Communications for the Waverly Air Force Base. She was a charter member Redeemer Lutheran Church, a member of the DAR and Legion Auxiliary. Her special hobbies were ceramics that she shared with family and friends and her zest for playing bridge. Merle still played in a marathon bridge group until age 103. She was proud of being the Grand Marshal in the Wartburg Sesquicentennial Homecoming parade in 2001 and having the distinction of being the oldest alumnus of Wartburg College.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Bonnie and Jack Uriell of Waverly, and John and Myrna Culbertson of Charles City; four grandchildren, Kevin Uriell and Bobbie James of rural Tripoli, Ann Uriell of Waverly, Steven Culbertson of Barrow, Alaska and Judy Culbertson of Mason City; and one great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Floyd on Feb. 4, 1996; brother, Verne Getts; sister, Lela Getts and by a daughter-in-law, Donna Culbertson.

William Conard

William Conard, 53, a former resident of 1909 Cedar Crest Lane, Charles City, died Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for William Conard will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Ruth Yeaton, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ida Grove Cemetery in Ida Grove. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until service time on Tuesday.

William LeRoy Conard was born November 24, 1948, at Ida Grove, the son of William E. and Louise (Feller) Conard. He attended school at Newark, Del., and later received his GED while in the military. William served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 to 1971. In 1978 he was united in marriage to Hae Sun Pak. They later divorced. William enjoyed music and spending time in nature.

Living family members include two sons, Cpl. William E. Conard II of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and LC pl. Raymond P. Conard II of Stephenville, Texas; his father, Lt. Colonel (retired) William E. Conard and wife Patricia of Ida Grove; a brother, Kermit Conard and wife Pat of Anaheim, Calif.; four sisters and their husbands, Kathleen and Pat McCann, and Darlene and Jim Franke both of Charles City, Linda and Tom Colbert of Elkton, Maryland, and Teresa and Terry McCann of North East, Maryland; four stepsisters and their husbands, Colonel Susan Lawrence and Neil Sonne of Mannheim, Germany, Julie and Patrick Garoutte of Sioux City, and Kelli and Devlun Whiteing of Ida Grove; two stepbrothers, James Summers of Battle Creek, and Steve Lingren and wife Kathy of Schleswig; and many nieces and nephews.

His mother, maternal grandparents, Julius and Alma Feller and paternal grandparents, Raymond and Eva Conard preceded him in death.

Raymond Venz, 85, of 1109 Allison St., Charles City, died Friday September 27, 2002 at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday Oct. 2, 2002 at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Visitation will be held Tuesday Oct. 1, 2002 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Myrtle Hagen 

DECORAH - Myrtle Hagen, 98, of Decorah, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Funeral services will be today, Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Decorah Lutheran Cemetery.

Myrtle was born in Decorah on Dec. 6, 1903. She married Adolph Hagen of Calmar on May 4, 1927.

Myrtle is survived by two children: her son, Dean (LaRue) Hagen of Decorah and her daughter Janice (Roy) Matthews of Charles City; six grandchildren: Richard (Sandy) Hagen, David (Jussara) Hagen, Georgiann Hagen, Joel Lillegraven, Michael (Cheryl) Lillegraven, Carrie (Michael) Ross; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother; and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991; her granddaughter, Connie Brinkman of Cresco; and her son-in-law, David Lillegraven of Charles City.
