Living family members include her husband, Kenneth "Bob" of Ionia; one son, Lynn of Ionia; one daughter, Joy George of White House, Tenn.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clark and Ted Bigelow; and two sisters, Margaret and Mildred Bigelow.

Ruth Cooper 

Ruth, Mrs. Robert, Cooper, 85, of 301 North Joslin Street, Charles City, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Ruth Deems Cooper was born December 21, 1916, at Shenandoah, the daughter of Harley and Elva (Graham) Deems. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1934, and from Iowa State University in 1939. Ruth worked as a social columnist for the Chicago Daily News before moving to Charles City. On August 30, 1941, she was united in marriage to Robert Cooper at Charles City. Ruth was a member of the First Congregational Church, Charles City Art Association, City Improvement Association, Chapter CY, P.E.O. Sisterhood for over 50 years where she had served as president, and the Order of the Knoll at Iowa State. She enjoyed ballet, music, and attending Iowa State sporting events. Ruth's passions included enjoying her second home in Wisconsin, and writing poetry.

Living family members include her husband, Robert of Charles City; two sons, Dr. James Cooper and wife Vicki of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Robert Cooper of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Mary Catherine Savage and husband Fredrick G. of Baltimore, Md.; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, James H. Deems.

Muriel M. Blum 

NASHUA - Muriel M. Blum, 93, of Nashua, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 6, 2002, at the United Methodist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Nashua. Visitation will be Sunday, May 5, 2002, from 3 to 7:30 p.m. with an Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua. There will also be one hour visitation prior to services at the church on Monday, May 6, 2002.

Muriel was born Dec. 4, 1908, at Rockford to LeRoy and Stella (Warner) Parcher. She graduated from Rockford High School in 1925, having taken normal training to teach school.She married Helmer Helmers Feb. 19, 1929 at Charles City then married Lester (Johnny) Blum Sept. 25, 1937. She taught rural school for three years, raised chickens on the family farm, sewed and made draperies for Sheckler Furniture Store in Nora Springs. She lived in Rockford until 1967 when she moved to Nashua. She moved to Charles City and was a resident at Salsbury Baptist Home before moving to Port Charles in December of 2000.

Living family members include two daughters, Jeanne (Donald) Blum of Nashua and Viola (Gerald "Bud") Kingery of Charles City; one brother, Donald (Bernie) Parcher of Rockford; a sister, Goldie Marrs of Charles City; a sister-in-law, Carol Parcher of Rockford; eight grandchildren, Barbara Stewart, Judy Kock, Kim Bohlen, Kevin Kingery, David Blum, Steven Blum, Robert Blum and James Blum; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Helmer Helmers on Oct. 1, 1935 and Lester (Johnny) Blum on Oct. 2, 1995; an infant son, Doyle Helmers; two brothers, Gale and Wayne Parcher.

Mary "Lois" Sullivan Nehl was born April 28, 1934, at Chester, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Clancy) Sullivan. She graduated from Elma High School. On Sept. 24, 1953, she was united in marriage to Walter Nehl at Waterloo. "Lois" had worked for Landmark Laundry and the Charles City Press. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Theresa Circle, and the Rosary Society.

Living family members include a daughter, Wanda Wilcoxson of Scott City, Kan.; three granddaughters, Heather Doyle, and Haley and Holly Wilcoxson; and a sister, Luella Nydegger and husband Bill of Naperville, Ill.

Emma L. Bonwell

WATERLOO - Emma L. Bonwell, 77, of Waterloo, died Thursday, May 9, 2002 at her home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2002, at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, May 12, 2002, from 1 to 8 p.m. at The Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and one hour prior to services.

Emma was born Sept. 25, 1924, in Floyd County, daughter of Fred and Elizabeth Litterer Vetter. She married Darold Bonwell on Dec. 31, 1945, in Preston, Minn. She was a physical therapist at Covenant Medical Center for 25 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Crew for many years.

Living family members include a son, Ronald Bonwell of Waterloo; a daughter, Dianne Angen of Waterloo; two sisters, Martha Dukowitz of Dallas, Texas and Mildred Bahlman of Waterloo; three grandsons, Michael Angen of Waterloo, Mark Angen of Hudson and Douglas Bonwell of Cedar Falls; eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Darold on Dec. 26, 1990 and a brother, Arthur Vetter.

 Susan Bruns

Susan Hall Bruns, age 88, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Otto and Mary Endelman Brocka on June 1, 1913, in Butler County, near Vilmer, Iowa, north of Allison. She received her education in a school near her home.

Susan married Leo Hall December 27, 1936, in Galena, Illinois. Then Leo and Susan farmed near Rockford, Iowa where Leo died in 1960. In 1961, she moved to Charles City, Iowa. She married Henry Bruns on January 15, 1969, at the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville. Susan and Henry made their home in Clarksville.

She was a cook at the 11th Street Chautauqua Nursing Home in Charles City and later at the Butler County Home until it closed in 1975. She was a member of the U & I Club in Clarksville. Susan loved to go camping and fishing and she mostly enjoyed being with her grandchildren and friends. She also liked raising plants and gardening and especially she liked cooking for her family.

Susan moved to the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville in 1994. She died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at 3:50 p.m. at the Community Nursing Home of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leo Hall in 1960; her parents; and five brothers, Harry, Floyd, Ernest, Alvin and Melvin Brocka; a daughter-in-law, Maxine Hall; and a son-in-law, Dan Hawke.

Susan is survived by her husband, Henry Bruns, Clarksville, Iowa; two sons, Leon Hall and his wife, Shirley of Charles City, Iowa and Larry Hall of Rockford, Iowa; three daughters, Mariel Kilby and her husband, Ken of Charles City, Iowa; Maureen Schultz of Iowa City, Iowa and Marcia Jacobsen and her husband, Jim of Charles City, Iowa; three step-daughters, Betty Whitney and her husband, Dennis, of Clarksville, Iowa; Dorothy Wedeking and her husband, Leo, of Clarksville, Iowa and Jean Henning and her husband, Bill, of Waverly, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Hinders and her husband, Ben, of Allison, Iowa; Esther Schmidt and her husband, Paul, of Allison, Iowa and Marvel Landers and her husband, Gaylen of Greene, Iowa; two brothers, LaVern Brocka and his wife, Ruth, of Allison, Iowa; Alfred Brocka and his wife, Viola, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Brocka of Bristow, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Hugh Ed Cagley, 71, a resident of 408 4th Ave., Charles City, died

Saturday, May 18, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Hugh Ed Cagley was born October 31, 1930, in Charles City, the son of Hugh and Faye (Brown) Cagley. Hugh served in the United States Army with the Tank Corp. until his honorable discharge in 1953. Following his discharge he was united in marriage to Maryjean "Louise" L. Ward on July 11, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Charles City. To this union six children were born. Hugh spent most of his working years at Salsbury Laboratories. Through these years and into retirement many of his favorite hobbies were trapping, hunting, fishing and hunting Morel mushrooms. He was a member of a Rock and Gem Club and also the Falling Rock Walleye Club.

He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him including his: wife, Maryjean "Louise" Cagley of Charles City ; three sons: Nick and wife Cheryl Cagley of Floyd, Jeffrey Cagley of Monterey, California, Wesley and wife Karla Cagley of Charles City; two daughters: Kelley and husband Brent Waid of Charles City, and Sherri Viers of Charles City; 16 Grandchildren; 8 Great Grandchildren; two brothers, John and wife Dorothy Cagley of San Antonio, Texas and Guy and wife Jean Cagley of Charles City; one sister, Audrey and husband Bill Best of Fort Dodge; many nieces and nephews.

His parents, three brothers, one sister, and five brother-in-laws preceded him in death. A daughter, Julie Berding of Charles City, died shortly after he did.

Julie Ellen (Cagley) Berding was born April 6, 1957, in Charles City, the daughter of Hugh and Maryjean "Louise" (Ward) Cagley. Julie attended Charles City Schools. Following school she was united in marriage to Martin Berding and then later divorced. Julie was known by many as: having a green thumb, an excellent cook, avid reader of Laverle Spencer books, loving mother, and kind hearted. She was a very proud individual that inspired those whose lives she touched.

She will be truly missed by: one daughter, Amber Berding of Charles City; one son, Jeremy Cagley and fiance Kelley of Warrensburg, Missouri; one granddaughter, Shae Cagley of Warrensburg, Missouri; her mother, Maryjean "Louise" Cagley of Charles City; three brothers, Nick and wife Cheryl Cagley of Floyd, Jeffrey Cagley of Monterey, California, Wesley and wife Karla Cagley of Charles City; two sisters, Kelley and husband Brent Waid of Charles City, and Sherri Viers of Charles City; several aunts and uncles; many nieces and nephews.

Vera Helen Ella Engelhardt, 87, formerly of 913 Beck St., Charles City, Iowa., died Thursday May 23, 2002, at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday May 28, 2002, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 705 3rd Ave., Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be held in Lime Springs Cemetery, Lime Springs, Iowa, at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation was held from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday May 27, 2002, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Vera was born July 19, 1914, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Reinhardt) Martens in rural Howard Co.

On August 20, 1932, Vera was united in marriage to Abner John Engelhardt in Preston, Minn. To this union nine children were born.

Vera worked hard along side her husband on the farm for many years as they raised their children.

Vera loved reading the newspaper, watching and feeding the birds and squirrels, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, especially Christmas cookies, and home made bread. Vera spent many hours tending to and enjoying her flower gardens. In her later years she was always ready to go for a ride.

Those thankful for having shared in Vera's life include her children: Darryl Engelhardt and his wife Lois of Garrison, Iowa, Vicky Davies and her husband, Owen, of Charles City, Nancy Howland and her husband, Steve, of Davenport, Iowa, Joanie Lukes and her husband, John, of Washburn, Iowa; and Debra Foster and her husband, Don, of Greene, Iowa; 25 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Engelhardt was preceded in death by her parents, husband Abner, two sons, Arlyn and Jerry Engelhardt Sr., two daughters, Judith Harrington, and infant daughter Peggy Engelhardt, two brothers, and two sisters.

Lanette J. Helm, age 38, of Decorah, Iowa, and formerly of Charles City, died on Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital from cancer.

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa - John Lewis Frahm, 90, of 21530 Eagle Ave., Clear Lake, Iowa died of leukemia Friday May 24, 2002, at his son's home in Charles City, Iowa. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 29, 10:30 a.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa with Rev. Ruth Yeaton of First Baptist Church, Charles City, Iowa officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and then one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. John was born April 17, 1912 the son of Peter and Minnie (Stuhr) Frahm. He attended country school. He worked at the cement plant in Mason City following school.

John married Olive Mary Nettleton August 18, 1935 at the Olivet Methodist Church, Mason City. They lived in Mason City until 1946 and then moved to rural Clear Lake, Iowa, where he farmed till 1971.

John enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona, playing pool, hunting, playing cards with family and friends, the outdoors, his cars and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John is survived by his three sons Gary Frahm and his wife, Nancy, Clear Lake; Larry Frahm and his wife, Nelda, Charles City, and Gene Frahm and his wife Karen, Mesa, Ariz.; a special friend Reba Fleshner, Clear Lake; nine grandchildren John S. Russell Winterink, 83, a resident of 2175 Vista Lane, Charles City, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his residence.

Russell Clark Winterink was born June 19, 1918, at Charles City, the son of Henry Earl and Mildred (Clark) Winterink. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1935 and from Iowa State University in 1940. On Nov. 9, 1941, he was united in marriage to Victoria Pearson at her parent's home in Madrid. Russell served in the United States Army during World War II. Returning home, he started farming the Winterink "family farm" and remained there until his death. He was known for the Black Angus cattle that he raised for many years. From 1962 to 1972 they owned and operated Triangle Feed and Grain at Charles City. Russell was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, the Cattleman's Association, and the Farm Bureau of which he had served as Floyd County's president. He enjoyed all sports but took special interest in girls softball, receiving an award for his support of Charles City Athletics. His other interests included fox and deer hunting, playing cards, and of course his unending interest in agriculture.

Living family members include his wife of 60 years, Victoria of Charles City; a son and his wife, Bob and Naomi Winterink of Charles City; two grandsons, Roby Winterink and wife Tara, and Michael Winterink and his fiancŽe, Carla Berding; two granddaughters and their husbands, Kim and Doug Kellogg, and Shelly and Brodie Dockendorf; two step grandchildren, Penny and Troy Holt; seven great grandchildren, Amanda and Katelynn Winterink, Michaela and Christopher Butner, Elizabeth Dockendorf, and Sadie and Celeste Kellogg; and a step great grandson, Devon Stillions.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Jody Winterink.

Leo Heying

Leo Heying, 91, of Alta Vista, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, June 3, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Reverend John Hemann presiding. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, also in Alta Vista. Visitation will be an hour prior to services at the church.

Leo John Heying was born May 13, 1911 at St. Cecelia, the son of John Herman and Christina (Glaser) Heying. He attended St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista. After his schooling he worked as a farm laborer for the neighbors for a short time before riding the freight train to California, where he stayed for a year.

When he returned to the Alta Vista area, he returned to working as a farm laborer. On Jan. 11, 1938, he was united in marriage to Velda Webb at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Alta Vista area before moving to New Hampton in 1948. The couple returned to the family farm near Alta Vista in December of 1951.

In 1974 the couple moved to Alta Vista, which was Leo's current residence. He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. He enjoyed going downtown to play cards, going to the Senior Citizens Lunches and watching the Chicago Cubs.

Leo is survived by two daughters, Lois (Don) Vorwald of Toledo and Mary (Gary) Elliott of Charles City; five sons, John (Sondra) of Conway, Ark., Bob (Karen) of Kewanee, Ill., Edward (Judy) of Chandler, Arz., Leon (Beverly) of Cedar Rapids and Thomas of Elma; 22 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard Hey

Benton, Wisc., and Billy (Peggy) Gourley of San Jacinto, Calif.; two sisters, Rosie Bach of Beloit, Wisc., and Lillian Osterman of Garrison, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Velda on April 10, 1998, two grandsons; Neil and Randy Vorwald; three brothers, Charlie, Harold and Joseph; and a sister, Angela Marshall.
