Lulu Fisher

MASON CITY -- Lulu M. Fisher, 80, of 501 S. Kentucky died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Rev. Thomas Healey, Chaplain, Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Following cremation, the family will scatter the ashes at a later date. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Lulu was born August 25, 1922 in Sexton, the daughter of Charles H. and Gertrude L. (Steven) Aman. Lulu learned to play the piano at a young age and was a church organist as a young woman. She graduated from high school at the age of 16 and went on to become a beautician working in Fort Dodge, Algona, Mason City and Nashua.

It was in Nashua that she met Charles Fisher. She became a full-time homemaker and a mother of five children. Lulu was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Their door was always open and the coffee was always hot for anyone who stopped by for a visit. Charlie and Lu were charter and lifetime members of the Mohawk Archery Club of Mason City and both achieved the Iowa State Championship during their involvement with the club.

In later years they traveled the U.S. in their motor home. They often pulled their boat and enjoyed fishing for various fresh-water fish and stopping at trout streams along the way. They spent a lot of time near Nashua, where they fished and spent time with Charlie's family.

Charlie passed away in 1990 and Lu continued to enjoy her family putting her energy into activities such as gardening, crocheting, sewing, playing her organ music, reading, crossword puzzles and cooking. She enjoyed surprising others with presents she had made or purchased. She filled her days by spending time with her family and life-long friends (especially Thelma VerBrugge and Lila Paulsen). Following two strokes in August of 2000, Lulu lived at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City. She had trouble remembering things but was able to delight everyone in her ability to remember many songs.

She spent many hours playing on the organ she had donated to the care center years before and on her portable keyboard. The family is very appreciative of the tender care Lulu was given while at Heritage.

Lulu will be missed by her children; Jim Fisher and wife Marsha of Davenport, Sue Bergan and husband Larry of Mason City, Steve Fisher and wife Nancy of Hanlontown, Vicki Fisher of Mason City, Pam Fisher of Maplewood, Minn.: her siblings; Earl Aman of San Luis, Colo., Jessie Garska of Hastings, Neb., Tom Aman of Albert Lea, Minn.
