Naomi E. (Penny) Bigler

 

Naomi E. (Penny) Bigler, 81, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away August 28, 2010, at the Mercy House of Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

She was born April 9, 1929, in Cass County, Iowa, to Fred V. and Grace (Conrad) Penfold. Penny graduated from Atlantic High School in Atlantic, Iowa, and went to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, receiving her elementary teaching certificate with a major in physical education. She married John W. (Bill) Bigler on May 21, 1949, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Penny taught school full time for three years in Bristow as well as being a mother and homemaker.

She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Dumont until it closed then transferred her membership to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton. Penny was very active in her church, sharing her faith by teaching CCD for many years. She was an Elkette, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Hampton Country Club where she was the women’s club champion. She was also a champion bowler in her earlier years and had a life-long love for golfing, dancing and traveling especially to the Holy Land and Medjugorije. Additionally she was an avid Bridge player.

She was a Cub Scout leader and was the most enthusiastic cheerleader at all of her beloved children’s activities. Penny and Bill wintered in Lake Havasu City, AZ for sixteen years.

She is survived by her husband John W. (Bill) Bigler of Dumont, son David J. (Lee) Bigler of Lakeville, Minnesota, son Mark W. Bigler of Des Moines, daughter Teresa A. (Keith) Anderson of Urbandale, daughter Angela E. (Russell) Swieter of Des Moines, son Jeffrey F. (Marnie) Bigler of Rochester, Minnesota, daughter Lisa M. (Scott) Sailer of Waukee , sister Wilma (Stanley) Embree of Atlantic, fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Penny was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Marvin Penfold and her two grandchildren, Erica & Nathan Wagner.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 2, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Fr. Bernard Grady officiated the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Mercy Hospice of Des Moines or of your choosing.

Robert “Bob” Kenneth Sullivan

Robert “Bob” Kenneth Sullivan, age 69, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Friday, August 27, 2010, at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. Interment was at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa, with military rites conducted by Guy W. Iversen AMVETS Post #49.

Henry John Groeneveld

Henry John Groeneveld, age 81, a lifelong resident of Aplington, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2010, at his home, from cancer, under the loving care of his wife, family and Iowa Hospice.

Funeral Service was held Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at the Aplington Baptist Church in Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith and Pastor Don Patet officiating the services. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa.

Jennie Schipper

Jennie Schipper, age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, of natural cause.

Henry Jacob Wolff

Henry Jacob Wolff, age 90, of Aplington, Iowa, died peacefully in the early hours on Monday, August 23, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, of natural causes.

Elsie Fern Jackson

Elsie Fern Jackson, 88, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away September 4, 2010, at her home in Hampton, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 8, at the Church of Christ in Hampton. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in rural Bristow. Rocky Woolery will officiated the service.

Alice Lucille Henning

Alice Lucille Henning, age 89, of Clarksville, died Thursday, September 9, 2010, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Alice was born on July 17, 1921, rural Parkersburg, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Krull) Sherman. She attended the Bristow High School. On December 9, 1938, she was united in marriage to John Henning in Mason City, Iowa. Alice and John farmed in the Butler and Bremer county areas until they settled on the farm near Clarksville in 1965.

The couple retired from farming in 1994 and moved to their present home in Clarksville. John passed away on April 17, 2000. Alice loved being a homemaker and farmers wife. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Bristow and the Triple J Club. Alice enjoyed flowers, gardening, baking, and fixing goodies for her family.

Alice’s memory is honored by her three sons; Russell Henning of Clarksville, Ronald Henning of Clarksville, and Roy (Cindy) Henning of Clarksville, a daughter; Rose (Jerry) DePuew of Clarksville, five granddaughters; Robbi Dettmer of Tripoli, Rhonda (Scott) Gade of Waverly, Stephanie Henning of Parkersburg, Jessica (Ben) Lovrien of Clarksville, and Angie (Danny) Capper of Allison, two step-grandchildren; Mark (Dawn) DePuew and Jay (Tina) DePuew both of Belmond, nine greatgrandchildren; Tim and Danielle Gade both of Waverly, Ali Henning of Parkersburg, Dylan Borglum of Tripoli, Nikki Dettmer of Tripoli, Ainsley and Sydney Lovrien of Clarksville, and Ceanna and Draven Capper of Allison, five Step-greatgrandchildren; Amber, Taylor, Halie, Brandon, and Kara DePuew all of Belmond, one step-great-greatgranddaughter, Avery DePuew of Belmond, two brothers-in-law; Harold (Margaret) Henning of Shell Rock and Bill (Jean) Henning of Waverly, and six sisters-in-law; Marion Sherman of Aplington, Dorothy Sherman of New Hartford, Alice Lundberg of Waverly, Ann George of Cedar Falls, Jennie Henning of Waverly and Elizabeth (Joe) Wedeking of Clarksville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a great grandson, Nicholas Dettmer, and five brothers, Harold, Leonard, Richard, Clarence, and Melvin Sherman.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 13, at the Church of Christ in Bristow with Pastor Delbert Beard officiating. Burial will follow at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Gretchen Elaine Rider

Gretchen Elaine Rider, 50, of Tripoli, Iowa, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 of natural causes.

Gretchen was born on April 5, 1960 at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Ronald Lavern Rider and Jean Elaine Cousins. Gretchen attended Waverly-Shell Rock elementary and high school and then attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology. Gretchen worked at the Denver Sunset Home and other care centers in the area, and was currently employed at Community Based Services in Waverly.

Gretchen was a member of the Denver Garden Club and enjoyed gardening, facebook, volleyball, fishing, antiquing and pedicures, but most of all; she loved spending time with her children, family and friends.

Gretchen is survived by her son Cody Saltz of Tripoli, and her daughter, Sarah Saltz of Des Moines; her mother and step-father, Jean (James) Taylor of Shell Rock, her father and step-mother, Ronald (Lois) Rider of Waterloo; 8 brothers, Ron (Mike McNally) Rider of Manchester, IA, André (LaDonna) Rider of Le Sueur, MN, Steven (Kristy) Rider of Cascade, MT, David (Lisa) Rider of Lakeville, MN, Dale (Glenda) Rider of Kent, WA, Joel (Tammy) Rider of Shell Rock, Aaron (Christy) Rider of Sunnyside, WA; and Ricky (Jena) Baker of Santa Rosa, CA; 1 sister, Collette (Dave) Ellison of Waverly.

Gretchen is also survived by several nieces and great nieces, nephews and great nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ron (June) Rider, Thelma Moore, her great-aunt, Lois Swartz and aunt, Loretta Harrington.

Celebration of Life Services was held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Sue Mutchler officiating. Cremation followed services with burial of her cremains in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock at a later date.

Gerdena Jeanette Mudderman

Gerdena Jeanette Mudderman, age 82, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Friday, September 3, 2010, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa of natural causes.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. The services were officiated by Rev. Leighton Seys and Rev. Mike Brost. Interment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, Iowa.

Alma Caroline Jacobs

Alma Caroline Jacobs, 97, of Allison, Iowa, passed away September 11, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison.

She was born August 18, 1913, in Butler County, near Greene, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Sophie (Prange) Constien. She was baptized & Confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church at Vilmar (Greene). Alma attended rural school near Greene, Iowa.

On February 18, 1936, she was married to Henry Jacobs at the home of her parents. The couple then farmed near Shell Rock for six years and then moved back to the Allison, Clarksville community, where they lived until moving to Allison in December 1970.

Alma was a faithful & active member of St. James Lutheran Church. She helped with making quilts & other activities in the Church. On the farm she helped with chores. Alma liked baking cookies and coffee cake. She liked being with family and also getting together with friends.

Alma is survived by her son James (Alice) Jacobs of Allison, daughter Joan (Jim) Lehman of Shell Rock, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, two step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters Dora Lubben & Helena DeBower.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 14, at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with burial in the Allison Cemetery. Pastor Jeffrey Blank officiated the service. Vivian Green was the organist. Pallbearers were Clay Bertram, Brad Jacobs, Brian Jacobs, Dalton Jacobs, Blake Jacobs and John Tharp.

Stacey Marie Hernandez

Stacey Marie Hernandez, 18, of Aredale, Iowa, passed away September 16, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born July 26, 1992, in Santa Cruz, California, to Mark Hernandez and Debra DeBerg. Stacey attended school at Harbor High in Santa Cruz, California and Hampton-Dumont High School. She worked at Country Inn & Suites as a housekeeper.

Stacey enjoyed helping others. She volunteered for meals on wheels for the Dumont Wellness Center, and she also helped with the food bank in Santa Cruz, California. Stacey was an avid photographer and was very artistic.

She is survived by her mother Debra DeBerg and fiancé Larry Marzen of Dougherty, father Mark (Yolanda) Hernandez of Santa Cruz, California, sister Ashley (Tim) Harles of Oroville, California, aunt Lisa (Kim) Allyn of Santa Cruz, California, grandparents Keith and Virginia DeBerg of Osceola, grandmother Agnes Tafoya of California, uncles Mike (Pam) & Gino Hernandez of Santa Cruz, California, great grandfather Jeane Richard of Aredale, great aunt Lois Deike of Waverly, best friend Rachel Noelting of Aredale and numerous friends & extended family.

Stacey was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather.

A Celebration of Life service was held Monday, September 20, 2010, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.


Louisa A. Wiemann

Louisa A. Wiemann, 88, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away September 19, 2010, at Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa.

Funeral service was held at Wednesday, September 22, at the Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield, Iowa. Rev. Arthur J. Zewert officiated the service. Burial took place in the Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.

Larry Winkey

Larry Winkey, 77, of Waverly, died Thursday, September 23, 2010 at his home.

Larry was born on June 2, 1933 to Harry and Myrtle Pohl Winkey in Waverly. He was united in marriage to Arlene Schmadeke on June 8, 1952 in Clarksville, Iowa. He worked for Koehring in Waverly for 37 years, and later retired from Schumacher Elevator in Denver, Ia.

Larry enjoyed spending time at his cabin, fishing, and lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He Larry Winkey loved being with his family and friends, and telling stories to anyone who would listen. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda (Roger) Capper of Clarksville; son, Mitchell Winkey of Janesville; grandchildren, Sonia (Don) Eggleston of Plainfield; Dustin Avery of Rock Island, IL; Arron Winkey of New Hartford; and Melissa Winkey of Waterloo; great grandchildren, Jacob and Dylan Eggleston; Isaac, Jeremiah, and Brooklyn Avery; Jordan Winkey, Emmanuel Mehdeh, and Masyn Mummelthie; and sister, Sherry (Robert) Litterer of Clarksville.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene in January 2010, and by his parents.

Memorial services were held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Readlyn, Iowa.

Linus H. Smoot

Linus H. Smoot, 89, of Allison, Iowa, passed away September 21, 2010, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born August 24, 1921, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, to Peter and Sophia (Cassmann) Smoot. Linus attended country schools in Minnesota and Iowa. He married Margaret Lursen on November 28, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri.

Linus was a farmer, past employee of Allison Bristow Schools, drove tank truck for Harms Oil and was a courier for Lincoln Savings Bank. Linus was baptized July 10, 1949, in the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison and also was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Linus and Margaret enjoyed attending all of the grandchildren’s activities; he enjoyed listening to Polka and Old Time Country Music and was an avid bird watcher.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Margaret Smoot of Allison, son Leon (Sheila) Smoot of Allison, daughter Carol Rewerts of Allison, granddaughters Lisa (David) Matthias of Readlyn, Sara (Nathan) Schutt of Cedar Falls and Jamie (Chad) Osterbuhr of Allison, great grandchildren Jacob, Gabriel, Derek, Abigail, Emy and Jordan.

Also survived by one sister Eleanor Bruns of Dumont.

Linus was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Viola, two brothers Herbert & George and a son-in-law Dennis Rewerts.

Funeral service was held Friday, September 24, 2010, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison with burial in the Allison Cemetery. Pastor Gary Mulder officiated the service.
