Leona M. Lindner

Leona M. Lindner, 89, of rural Waverly, Iowa, died early Wednesday morning, January 27, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural causes.

Leona was born on June 10, 1920, in rural Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Alma (Deike) Benning. Leona was baptized on July 11, 1920 and confirmed on July 15, 1934 at Pleasant Valley Church, rural Clarksville. Leona attended country school in rural Clarksville from 1925 until 1934. On July 30, 1940, Leona was united in marriage to Lawrence W. Lindner in Fairbault, Minnesota. The couple farmed near Chester, Iowa for a short time, in 1950 the couple returned to the Plainfield area. In 1958, the family moved to Horton, making their home at 1425 Easton Avenue. Leona worked for Oberdear’s Restaurant in Plainfield and also at Oberhue’s Restaurant in Waverly until she retired in 1980. Leona earned her G.E.D. in June of 1979, from Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo. Lawrence died on December 31, 1999, and Leona continued to live in her home until she made her home at Bartels in May of 2008.

Leona was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Plainfield, where she had been active with the United Methodist Woman’s Group. In her spare time Leona enjoyed playing the piano, playing cards, sewing, cooking and baking (especially potato salad and homemade biscuits), she truly loved being a homemaker. Leona dearly loved her family and what gave her the most joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Leona is survived by her six children and their spouses; Sharon Westervelt of Shell Rock, Richard (Linda) Lindner of Waverly, Ruth (Jerome) Bienemann of Clarksville, Steven Lindner of Clarksville, Mike Lindner of Plainfield, and Robert (Stacie) Lindner of Marion; twenty grandchildren; thirty one great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one son-in-law, Larry Carter of Horton, one daughter-in-law, Pat Lindner of Azle, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Benning and Margaret Benning both of Plainfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence in 1999, two sons, David in 1971; and Larry in 1991; a daughter, Barbara Carter in 2007; a grandson, Christian Lindner in 1994; a son-in-law, Richard Westervelt in 2006; and three brothers, Edwin, Raymond and Marvin.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Plainfield United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dennis Burns officiating. Burial was in the Horton Cemetery, rural Waverly. Memorials may be directed to Plainfield United Methodist Church Memorial Committee or the Cedar Valley Hospice.

Eugene David Johnson

Eugene David Johnson, age 59 of Plainfield, Iowa died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Waverly Health Center.

Gene was born April 12, 1950, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Barbara (Minkler) Johnson. He received his education in Tripoli graduating from the Tripoli High School in 1969. He then attended Wartburg College with a scholarship for wrestling and football, graduating in 1973 with a teaching degree. In 1971, he married Cherie Smith of Plainfield. To this union two daughters were born. The couple later divorced. On June 30, 1990, he then married Linda Wedeking in Nashua.

On April 9, 1973, Gene began the career he loved, working for John Deere. He was planning on retiring this spring. He was a member of the Oddfellows in Shell Rock, the Sons of the Amvets in Waverly and the UAW Local 838.

In his free time he enjoyed fishing, dartball, polka dancing with Linda and spending time with his children and grandchildren, in all their events. Gene was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and proudly shared his newly remodeled Carrville Cabin.

Gene and Linda enjoyed various sight-seeing journeys that often led to the nearest casino.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Plainfield; two daughters, Cherijean (Tracy) Slocum and Michelle Johnson (Pat Weber) all of Allison; one step-daughter, Michelle Bond (Chris Wagner) of Nashua; two step-sons, Brian (Brenda) Bilharz and Jeremy (Kaylee) Bilharz all of Nashua; ten grandchildren, Chase and Sydnie Slocum, Anthony Nichols, Shaylon Lahr, Whitney and Zack Bond, Bryce and Brooklyn Bilharz, Blaine and Jaycie Bilharz; one brother, Glenn (Lorene) Johnson of Nashua; two sisters, Judy Matthias of Waterloo and Susan (Robert) Ferrie of Plainfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Frank Johnson; one brother-in-law, Victor Matthias; one niece, Paula Tuft.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the United Methodist Church, Nashua with Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula officiating.

Pallbearers were Tracy Slocum, Chase Slocum, Anthony Nichols, Pat Weber, Shaylon Lahr, Chris Wagner, Zack Bond, Brandon Wagner, Brian Bilharz, Bryce Bilharz, Jeremy Bilharz and Blaine Bilharz. Honorary pallbearers are Whitney Bond, Brooklyn Billharz, Sydnie Slocum, Jaycie Bilharz.

Minerva Joan Juel

Minerva Joan Juel, age 77, of Stout, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, from natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Monday, February 1, 2010, at the Reformed Church of Stout with Pastors David VanderLeest and Don Ringnalda officiating. Burial was held in the Stout Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Billy Graham Crusade, American Heart Association or the Christian Crusader.

Hazel Leone DeGroote

Hazel Leone DeGroote, age 74, of Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, and formerly of Parkersburg, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village of natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg with Pastor Ryan Zurbriggen officiating. Burial was held in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Paul Knapp

Paul Knapp, 89, of Shell Rock, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock, Iowa.

Paul was born on May 28, 1920, the son of Carl and Kathryn (Bueter) Knapp in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He attended school in Clarksville and Shell Rock. Paul served with the US Air Force during World War II. On February 24, 1943, he was united in marriage to Grace VanLengen in Shell Rock, Iowa. The couple made their home in Cedar Falls, where Paul did carpentry work. They later moved to Shell Rock and Paul began farming and later ran a trucking company along with his wife Grace. Following Paul’s retirement, he did a lot of wood cutting and work at the Riverside Cemetery.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church. Paul enjoyed old time country music shows, telling jokes, playing cards and had a knack for building things.

Survivors are his wife, Grace Knapp of Shell Rock, Iowa; son Dean Knapp of Shell Rock, Iowa; two grandchildren, Robyn Knapp of Shell Rock, Iowa and Chris (Shannon) Knapp of Waverly, Iowa and four great grandchildren, M’Lynn, Erica, Alecia and Brody Knapp. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Carol in infancy; a daughter-in-law, Pat Knapp; great grandson, Austin and two brothers, Forrest and Robert Knapp.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 8, 2010 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Christine Pauley officiating. Betty Lou Wharton

Betty Lou Wharton, 52, of Bristow, Iowa, passed away February 5, 2010, at her home in Bristow. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, Iowa

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, Iowa.

Burial will take place in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock, Iowa.

Msgr. Walter Brunkan will be officiating the service.

Marie Davis

Marie Davis, 93, of Aredale, Iowa, passed away February 1, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in Hampton, Iowa. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 6, at 11:00 a.m. at the Aredale United Methodist Church in Aredale, Iowa. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, Iowa. Rev. Doug Tharpe officiated the service.

She was born December 2, 1916, on a farm outside of Aredale, Iowa, to Neils and Minnie (Ubben) Nelsen. Marie graduated from Hansell High School and was Valedictorian of her class. She was united in marriage to Denton Davis on February 17, 1938, in Hampton, Iowa. Marie was a homemaker and also took care of her mother and helped raise her siblings. She was a member of the Aredale Homemakers Club and the Aredale Methodist Church. Marie enjoyed antiquing, making crazy quilts for her family and working in her flower & vegetable gardens.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Bev Davis of New Hartford, brother Neil and wife Irene Nelsen of Mason City, sister-in-law Clarice Nelsen of Waterloo, granddaughter Diane and husband Doug DeBuhr of New Hartford, grandson Mike Davis of Davenport, three great grandsons Denton DeBuhr and Jenna Dempze of Purcell, Oklahoma, Drew DeBuhr and Dylan DeBuhr, both of New Hartford and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Denton, son Keith, brother Cecil Nelsen, and sister Dorothy Becker.

Weldon Sult

Weldon Sult, 84, of Marble Rock, died Thursday, February 4, 2010, at his home. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 8, 2010, at the Walter F. Bohl Community Center, 520 College St. in Marble Rock, with Pastor Judy Wooton, of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church and Pastor Jason Boyd, Chaplain for Iowa Hospice presiding. Veteran’s honors will be provided by American Legion Stroud-Gates Post #387. Inurnment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock at a later date.

Those wishing to send a memorial in memory of Weldon may do so to the Weldon Sult Memorial Fund in care of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #387, Iowa Hospice, New Hampton or the Parkinson’s Research Institute. Weldon Fox Sult was born September 20, 1925, in Nashua, Iowa a son of Leslie ‘Doc’ and Eva ‘Tony’ (Fox) Sult.. He received education in the Plainfield Schools and graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1944. He attended the University of Iowa for a while and graduated from the Des Moines Barber School. In 1944, Weldon entered the U.S. Army and served in Europe. He was injured during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart. On November 25, 1948, Weldon was united in marriage with Lillian Marianne "Toodles" Thieman at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. To this union, three children were born. After the service, he returned to Marble Rock where he owned and operated Sult’s Barbershop for 47 years, retiring in 1994. Sult’s Barbershop was the community center before Marble Rock had a community center. Men would meet there daily to keep each other informed and to share stories. Weldon was very well read and knowledgeable in a wide variety of subjects. Telling stories gave him great joy. Weldon was a member of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Marble Rock Lion’s Club serving 55 years and holding every office in the club. Weldon was an active member of the Marble Rock Community Betterment board. He was instrumental in bringing Friendship Acres and the doctor’s office to town. He volunteered many years with the Friendship Acres, taking care of the facilities. As a member of the Marble Rock American Legion, he was a proponent for the new Marble Rock Veteran’s Memorial.

Living family members include his daughter: Nancy (Larry) Glubka, Eugene, Oregon; two sons: Joel (Rosemary) Sult, Allison; Jon (Rhonda) Sult, Marble Rock; seven grandchildren: Kelly (Adam) Peuse, Casey Sult, Kara (Adam) Halford, Jordan Glubka, Dustin Sult, Dena Sult and Lilly Ann Glubka. Extended family members include his sisters-in-law: Carol Thieman, Marble Rock and Patricia Sult, Mission Viejo, California, many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Toodles in 2007, three brothers: Klaydon ‘Mort’; Donald and Ronald ‘Toby’ Sult and brother-in-law William Thieman.

Gerald Joseph “Jerry” Hagarty

A Funeral Mass for Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Hagarty, 66, of Greene, was held Friday, February 19, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Greene.

Gerald Joseph Hagarty was born on June 13, 1943, in Greene, Butler Co., Iowa a son of Donald and Berniece (Dougherty) Hagarty and passed away peacefully on Monday, February 15, 2010, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene from complications of kidney cancer. He received his education in country schools, Sacred Heart Academy and Greene High School, graduating in 1961.

Jerry hauled milk for Urban Kelly and Ron Schuknecht before being hired by Barth Chevrolet in 1976. He later established Jerry’s Automotive, located near the family farm, where he worked until stricken with cancer in the fall of 2009. While working as a mechanic he also hauled milk part time for Tim McConnell of Cresco and made many friends along his route.

Jerry was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene where he served with the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Library Board and volunteered time delivering meals on wheels. He enjoyed race cars and restoring vintage automobiles.

He is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Jack (Jeannie) Hagarty of Racine, WI; Tom Hagarty of Des Plaines, IL; Renee (Fred) Billman of Racine, WI; Janet (Gene) Hagarty of Iowa Falls; and, several nieces and nephews. Jerry leaves many friends, but he will be especially missed by Dean and Kay Brinkman of Greene, Brenda Steidl of Mason City and Kenny Knapp of Greene.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert M. Lohr

Robert M. Lohr, age 89, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born July 16, 1920, the son of Herman and Kathryn Voigt Lohr in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He lived with his parents in Monroe, South Dakota, Cathay, North Dakota, Aplington, Iowa and St. Paul, Minnesota before coming to Parkersburg in July, 1937. He received his education in the Aplington Elementary School and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1938. Robert attended ISTC for two years and was a graduate of the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science. Robert served his country in the United States Navy in World War II, serving from July 28, 1942 until November 15, 1945. He was a Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class aboard the USS Altair during the invasion of France.

Robert was united in marriage with Lorraine Helen Homan on December 2, 1944, in Boston, Massachusetts. Following his discharge from the Navy, the couple lived above the furniture store in Parkersburg where Robert was in the furniture business from 1947 thru September, 1981.

Robert was a Funeral Director at J.G. Houts Funeral Home, Engelkes Funeral Home and Schwartz Funeral Homes, Inc., all in Parkersburg. He was a member of Harry Peters American Legion Post #285.

Robert made his confession of faith in Christ as Savior and Lord in the Aplington Baptist Church. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg where he taught Men’s Sunday School and served as a Deacon for many years.

In his spare time, Robert enjoyed his hobbies of fishing, hunting and reading.

Robert died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison, Iowa, of complications of Mersa. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Robert Arthur Lohr in 1954; one brother, Ronald Milton Lohr.

Robert is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lorraine Lohr, Parkersburg, Iowa; three sons, James Alan Lohr, Hopkins, Minnesota; Thomas Ronald Lohr, Johnston, Iowa and Kenneth Edward Lohr, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, February 20, 2010, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg, with Pastor Ryan Zurbriggen officiating. Renise Aswegan accompanied those in attendance singing "Rock of Ages" and "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah". Tom Teeple sang "Softly and Tenderly". Burial was held in Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg with Tom Blevins, Tom Hoogestraat, Lyle Huisinga, Bryon Aswegan, Jerry Junker and Larry Kluiter serving as Casketbearers. Full military honors were conducted by the Parkersburg American Legion, Post #285. Honorary Casketbearers were Wendall Abkes, David Dreyer, Wilbur Huisinga and Fred Everts.

Jeanette LaRue Mennen

Jeanette LaRue Mennen, age 84, of Parkersburg, died Friday, February 12, 2010, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, of natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Friday, February 19, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Michael McLane officiating. Burial was held in Pleasant View Cemetery in Aplington.

Sandra L. Donovan

Sandra L. Donovan, 41 of Iowa City died Sunday, February 14, 2010.

A memorial mass was held at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, February 25, 2010, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Michael Phillips. Remembering Sandra’s passions in her life, memorial donations can be given to establish an educational fund for her daughter, Regan; or for the needs of patients and families of the Adult Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in lieu of flowers. Sandra Lee Viet was born April 18, 1968, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, the daughter of Darwin and Karla (Jamison) Viet. She attended schools in the Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock School District, graduating in 1986. She enlisted with the United States Air Force following high school. It was here that she met her future husband, Shawn M. Donovan, and they were married on October 21, 1989, in San Bernardino, California. Upon leaving the Air Force, the couple moved back to Iowa, where they attended and graduated from the University of Iowa, Sandra with her BSN degree in Nursing. She has been employed by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics since September of 1996, caring for patients and their families in the Adult Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit for the past four years. Sandra had a calling in this area and gave of herself freely to the needs of her patients and their families. She maintained strong relationships with them years after leaving the hospital.

On February 24, 2006, Sandra and Shawn were overjoyed with the birth of their daughter, Regan Eleanore. Regan was the center of Sandra’s world and the fulfillment of all of her hopes and dreams. During their brief time together, Sandra loved her "little girl Regan" with all of her heart and soul.

In addition to her husband, Shawn and daughter, Regan; other family includes her mother, Karla Wessels of Tama; sisters, Doreen Morrow of Tama, and Veronica Uthe (Chris) of Dumont, IA; niece and nephews, Autumn Morrow, Adam Gerdes, and Jakie Uthe; her mother-in-law, Kristine Donovan of West Allis, WI; sister-in-law, Colleen Greoschel (Neil) of Malone, WI; brother-in-law, Charles Donovan (Jennifer) of Waukesha, WI; niece and nephews, Kiley Donovan, Evan Greoschel, and Cullen Dovonan.

She was preceded in death by her father, Darwin Viet, father-in-law, Michael Donovan, and her grandparents.

Sandra’s family is touched by the tremendous outpouring of love and support that has been offered by the many people that Sandra touched during her all too brief time with us. Sandra is, and will always be, greatly missed by those who were lucky enough to have known her.

Rena K. Arjes

Rena K. Arjes, 90, of Allison, Iowa, passed away February 16, 2010, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 20, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison. Rev. Jeffrey A. Blank officiated the service. Burial took place in the Allison Cemetery.

Rena was born on September 18, 1919, in Allison, Iowa, to Harm and Kate (Henrichs) Arjes. Rena attended rural Butler County Country Schools. She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Rena enjoyed flowers, gardening, embroidery and knitting. She is survived by her brother Kermit Arjes of Parkersburg and sister Marjorie Harms of Allison. Rena was preceded in death by her sisters Anna Dralle, Florence Boomgarden and Lavon Wiebke and her brothers Harlan, John and Harm.

Elvin Fred Rover

Funeral Services for Elvin Fred Rover, 87, of Greene, were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 24, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Elvin Fred Rover was born June 10, 1922, in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa a son of Eldo and Minnie (Becker) Rover and died Sunday, February 21, 2010, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. He received his education in the Coldwater Township Country School # 8.

He was Baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vilmar on July 2, 1922, and Confirmed on May 23, 1937 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. As an adult he returned to the Vilmar Church where he served in many positions on the Church Council.

Elvin was united in marriage to Mable Cassmann on October 26, 1947, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

He was inducted into the United States Army on January 6, 1945. Following his honorable discharge on November 8, 1946, he returned to Greene to farm the family farm. Elvin did electrical work and did woodworking as a hobby. He is credited with various wood projects in the Vilmar Church before and after his retirement. In 1988 he retired from farming and the family farm was passed down to it’s fourth generation. Elvin and his wife traveled to Texas a few years and helped build a church in Muscatine with the Mission Builders in 1989. Elvin was diagnosed with cancer 7 years ago. He continued to live on the farm until last April when the couple moved to Greene.

He is survived by his Wife, Mable; Daughters Linda (Ed) Mack of King of Prussia, PA, Lois (Dean) Kramer, of Bristow; Grandchildren: Dana (Chuck) Kissee of Chula Vista, CA, Levi (April) Kramer and Great-Grandchildren Austin, Randy and Kassidy of Bristow; Sister-in-law Eunice (Fred) Bolhuis, of Aplington; Brothers-in-law: Gordon Cassmann of Greene, Melvin Cassmann of Grundy Center; Sister-in-law Kathryn Cassmann of Greene; Step-sister-in-law Esther Mae (Harry) Rumple of Portersfield, WI; many nieces and nephews.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters-in-laws and one brother-in-law.
