Marylin Joyce Davis

Marylin Joyce Davis, 74, of Allison, Iowa, passed away July 31, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa. She was born July 27, 1936, in Lacona, Iowa, to Floyd James and Martha (Gray) Snuggs. Marylin graduated in 1954 from the Humeston High School in Humeston, Iowa.

She was married on May 28, 1954, in Princeton, Missouri to Daryl Dean Davis. Marylin worked as a Teachers Aid with the Allison Bristow Schools, then at the Allison Care center and retired from the Butler County Public Marylin Joyce Davis Health as a Home Health Aide.

She was a member of the Allison United Church of Christ in Allison, where she was active on several offices and boards, she was also active in the Women’s Fellowship for many years. She enjoyed camping, gardening, traveling and knitting.

Marylin is survived by her son Ron (Sherida) Davis and family Jason Davis, Chamee & Nick Thorne and Jax & Jady Thorne, daughter Lou (Scott) Dedinsky and family Nick & Michael Dedinsky, sister Janice Woods and family, sister-in-law Marylee Davis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Daryl, twin sister in infancy and grandson Christopher Dedinsky.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 7, at the Allison United Church of Christ in Allison. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Burial will take place in the Allison Cemetery. Pastor Ralph Wedeking will be officiating the service.

Leonard "Len" Berghoefer 

Leonard “Len” Berghoefer, 76 of Hampton, Iowa died on Monday, July 26th at Franklin General Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A memorial service was held Friday, July 30, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to the family.

Melvin Cassmann  

Melvin Cassmann, 82, of Grundy Center and formerly of Clarksville, Iowa, died Monday, July 26, 2010, at the Grundy Center Care Center. Melvin was born March 24, 1928, in Allison, Iowa, the son of Peter and Ella (Johnson) Cassmann. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Greene. He attended country school near his home, and following his education he assisted on the family farm and then worked for Ralph Marsh on his farm. Melvin married Lucille Dralle and the couple made their home in Bristow, Iowa and later Evansdale, Iowa.

Lucille died in 1957, leaving Melvin with three young daughters who were raised by Vernon & Viola Roberts of Grundy Center. He later went to work for the City of Waterloo as foreman in the Arborist Department and retired in 1989 after 31 years of service.

In the 1980’s, Melvin and Eileen Fuerstenberg made their home together in Waverly. This longtime friendship involved going to Melvin Cassmann auctions, traveling, and sharing duties on the acreage. They later moved to their home in Clarksville where Mel has been known for years as the “Clarksville Goodwill Ambassador”.

Melvin loved horses, ponies and mules and for years he and Eileen showed their team of mules throughout Iowa and even at the State Fair. Their team of mules earned numerous awards, trophies, and ribbons throughout their show career. Melvin moved into the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville in August of 2007 and then moved to Grundy Center Care in March of 2009.

Eileen died on March 4, 2010.

Melvin is survived by his three daughters, Connie J. Hensley of Waterloo, Mary A. (Barry) Block of Grundy Center, Susan K. Halfpop of Phoenix, Arizona; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three step-great grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Rover of Greene, Iowa, Eunice (Fred) Bolhuis of Aplington, Iowa; step sister, Esther Mae Rumple of Portersfield, Wisconsin; sisters-inlaw, Kathryn Cassmann of Greene, Viola Roberts of Grundy Center, Donna Dralle of Waverly, and Margaret Dralle of Allison.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Lucille, longtime companion Eileen Fuerstenberg, two brothers, Dale and Gordon Cassmann; brother-in-law, Elvin Rover.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 29, 2010, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (Vilmar), rural Greene, with burial in the church cemetery.

Rachel Clara Early 

 

Rachel Clara Early, aged 84, of Cameron Park Ca. passed away June 18, 2010 at Folsom Mercy Hospital in Folsom CA. She came to the end of a struggle with the devastation of cardiac arrest, and passed away with her two daughters at her side. Rachel was the middle child of five; her parents were Peter and Clara Kramer. She was born on June 12, 1926 in Ackley Iowa and received her elementary and high school education, starting high school at the age of 12, in Dumont Iowa.

After graduation her biggest adventure was a short time in California with her married sister, Gladys Witt and her family. Rachel worked briefly as a Van de Kamps counter girl before returning to Iowa where she married her high school sweetheart Howard Claire Early on December 21, 1946 following his return from the army. They lived and farmed in Iowa until 1958 when the family moved to California.

Rachel and Claire were married for 58 years before he succumbed to lung cancer on February 25, 2005.

Claire and Rachel were blessed with two daughters, Nancy (Steve) Morris and Lynn (Bob) Koenigs, all of Cameron Park. There are five grandchildren, Jeremy Koenigs, Rebecca (Scott) Armstrong, Ethan (Karri) Koenigs, Emily (Ricky) O’Neal and Sarah Koenigs. There are eight great grandchildren: Allison O’Neal, Cameron and Jillian Armstrong, Ella and Isaac Koenigs, and Payton, Aubrey and Lauren Koenigs. Rachel’s sister Arlene Trautman of Marshalltown Iowa survives, along with many nieces and nephews.

Sister Gladys Witt, and brothers John Kramer and Albert “Bobby” Kramer predeceased Rachel. Her parents, deceased, were Clara and Pete Kramer, of Hampton Iowa.

Rachel was a homemaker all her life. She was an expert at crossword puzzles and word games, and came to computers and email in her late 70’s. The emails flowed, although she still wrote letters to friends and family. She loved reading, something she shared with Claire and passed on to her family. She enjoyed several daily newspapers, what she said were “too many” magazines and talk radio. Lunches and shopping outings were treats she loved, and playing the piano by ear was something she enjoyed for many years. Rachel left an indelible mark on her family; she was at the heart of every family get together, and will be so greatly missed.

Services and burial were held on Friday, June 25, at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery, where she was buried beside Claire.

Harriett H. Martin  

Harriett H. Martin, age 92, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Carl August and Fannie (Martin) Hammel on May 30, 1918, in Clarksville, Iowa. Harriett graduated from Clarksville High School in 1935; she was the last surviving member of her class.

Harriett continued her education and received her Teacher’s Certificate in 1937 from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught for a year at the Rinard School in Rinard, Iowa.

On September 18, 1938, Harriett was united in marriage with Rex Hughes Martin of Rippey, Iowa, at her father’s funeral home in Clarksville. They resided in St. Louis, Missouri while Rex completed his Mortuary Training. In June of 1939 they moved to Clarksville where they lived the rest of their lives.

Rex and Harriett owned and operated the Hammel and Martin Funeral Home for 28 years and also the Hammel and Martin Furniture Store in Clarksville. Later on Harriett worked as a Teacher’s Aide at the Clarksville Community Schools for 15 years, she was a secretary for Ramker Construction in Waverly, Iowa for a couple of years and she had also volunteered with Hospice for three years.

Harriett was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville. She was the last surviving Charter Member of P.E.O. IT in Clarksville. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was on the original Clarksville Community Nursing Home Board of Directors, was on the original board at C.A.R.D (Clarksville Area Recreational Development) Inc., and was also an active member of the Clarksville Community Nursing Home Auxiliary. Harriett enjoyed music and playing the organ. She was the church organist for many years. She also enjoyed playing at many weddings and funerals.

Harriett died Sunday, August 1, 2010, at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa, of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Martin on January 29, 1966; her parents; and one sister, Ruth Gahn.

Harriett is survived by three children, Dean (Marla) Martin of Fort Myers, FL, Mary (Ted) Sinram of Clarksville, IA, and Jane (Scott) Arenholz of Red Oak, IA; eight grandchildren, Wendy Martin Jerich and Christin Martin of Lakeworth, FL, Shelley McCully and Mark Sinram of Clarksville, IA, Kelley Smith and Tim Sinram of Shell Rock, IA, Matt Arenholz of Olathe, KS and Ryan Arenholz of Waverly, IA; 14 Great- Grandchildren; and one Great-Great- Granddaughter.

Funeral Services were held Thursday, August 5, 2010, at the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Iowa, with Pastor Christine Pauley officiating. The organist was Lola Clark and the congregational hymn was “Let There Be Peace On Earth.” The casketbearers were Mark Sinram, Tim Sinram, Matt Arenholz, Ryan Arenholz, Mike McCully and Kendall Smith. The honorary casketbearers were Shelley McCully, Kelley Smith, Wendy Martin Jerich and Christin Martin. Interment was at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa.

Mary I. Wood

Mary I. Wood, 74, of Clarksville, Iowa passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2010 in the emergency room at Waverly Health Care Center in Waverly, Iowa. Mary Irene Wood was born on September 5, 1935, the daughter of Casper and Margaret (Betsinger) Zwanziger in Waverly, Iowa.

She attended country school in the Plainfield area and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1953. Following her education, she was employed at Lutheran Mutual for a couple of years.

On October 20, 1955, she was united in marriage to James Wood at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. In 1974, she started working Mary I. Wood at the Waverly Sales Company in the kitchen and later did bookkeeping there until 1984. At which time she was a care giver for her parents and her son, Kenneth.

She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and the Horton Cemetery Society. Mary enjoyed her flower garden, watching golf (Tiger Woods) her computer, music, bus trip tours, but most especially spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors are her three sons, Mark (Annette) Wood of Nashua, Iowa, Eric (Lucy) Wood of West Concord, Minnesota and Donald (fiancée Julie Nordman) of Laurel, Maryland; 11 grandchildren, Melinda, Nicole, Dylan, Christina, Nathaniel, Ryan, Kathleen, Edward, Heather, Robbyn, and Travis; 7 great-grandchildren, Vincent, Isabella, Taina, Cody, Tristane, Braeden and Kayla.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by a son, Kenneth on June 11, 1995.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Lynn Busch officiating. Burial was in the Horton Cemetery in Horton, Iowa.

Allen Schwab

Allen Schwab, 56, of rural Shell Rock, Iowa, died on Monday, August 2, 2010 at his home. Allen was born on March 28, 1954, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Adam and Dorothy (Miller) Schwab. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1972.

He worked with his father on the family farm. Adam died in February of 1975 and Allen took over the family farm, where he raised hogs and cattle.

Allen was united in marriage to Dorothy DeGroote on July 22, 1978 at the New Hartford United Methodist Allen Schwab Church. Allen was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and trapping. He was fan of Dale Earnhardt J.R. and NASCAR.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Schwab of rural Shell Rock; one daughter, Katie Rosendahl and her husband, Kyle of Waverly, Iowa; two sons, Matt Schwab and Tanner Schwab, both of rural Shell Rock, Iowa; one granddaughter, Cayla Rosendahl; one sister, Gloria De- Groote and her husband, Jim of rural Shell Rock, Iowa; one brother, Larry Schwab and his wife, Alice of Allison, Iowa, and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Richard Schwab and Darrell Schwab; and one nephew, Brian Schwab.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. Burial was in West Point Cemetery, rural Janesville.

Leo Russell Cutshall

Leo Russell Cutshall passed into eternity on Monday, August 2, 2010, at Hamilton Hospital, Webster City, Iowa. He was 89 years old and resided at Southfield Wellness Community.

Leo was born to John and Ida (Green) Cutshall on a farm west of De Soto, Iowa on June 23, 1921. During his high school years, the family moved to a farm near Ventura, Iowa. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball during his high school years and also played the drums.

Leo graduated from Ventura High School in 1941. He farmed in Leo Russell Cutshall the Garner and Klemme, Iowa area. He later engaged in farming south of Allison.

He married Ruby Mae Hochstetler on October 11, 1955, near Wellman, IA. Ruby and he raised their children and enjoyed life on the family farm near Allison. They relocated to Webster City upon retiring in 1998.

Leo is survived by his wife, Ruby, and five children: Joe (Sandy) of Ida Grove, Iowa, Ruth Steig (Roger) of Webster City, Laura Norman (Jim) of Clinton, IA, Steve (Ann) of Allison, Iowa, and Susan Eberly (Scott) of Coralville, Iowa. Grandchildren include Meg, Aaron, Leah, and Amy Cutshall, Ryan, Reginald, Rachel, and Rebecca Steig, Emily, Kyle, Lindsey, and Molly Norman, Alexander, Rubanna, Maryann, and John Cutshall, and Quinten and Cole Eberly. Other survivors include a sisterin law, Leta Cutshall of Britt, Iowa.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Homer and Forest, sisters Emma and Susie, infant brother Alfred, son David and granddaughter Elizabeth.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Webster City with Reverend Pete Peterson officiating. Burial was in the Butler Center Cemetery near Allison, Iowa.

Arrangements were made with the Boman Funeral Home.

Robert Oldenburger

Robert Oldenburger, age 73, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Monday, August 2, 2010, at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota of natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Friday, August 6, 2010, at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg, with Pastor Brad Zinnecker officiating. Interment was held Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.

Calvin Walter Heyenga

Calvin Walter Heyenga, age 86, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, formerly of Stout, Iowa, died Thursday, August 5, 2010, at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa, of natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Reformed Church of Stout with Pastor Ron Bartlett officiating. Burial was held in the Stout Cemetery. Full military honors were conducted by the Parkersburg American Legion, Post #285.

Russel Oren “Barney” Parker

“Barney” Parker Russel Oren Parker died August 7, 2010, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs, after a long struggle with cancer.

Funeral services for Barney Parker, 88, formerly of Marble Rock, were held Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the Walter Bohl Community Center in Marble Rock with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock with Military Rites conducted by Stroud-Gates American Legion Post 387 of Marble Rock.

Dawn Rene Heldt  

Dawn Rene Heldt, age 44, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Monday, August 9, 2010, at her home in Parkersburg from a short term cancer illness.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, August 21, 2010, at Miracle Park where there will be a 3:00 p.m., Prayer Service followed by a gathering at Dutch’s Steakhouse, both in Parkersburg.

Shirley Y. Doeden

Shirley Y. Doeden, 84, of Allison, Iowa, passed away August 11, 2010, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa. She was born December 10, 1925, at rural Allison, Iowa, to Emory A. and Hester Hazel (West) Scott.

Shirley graduated from the Allison High School in 1943 as class Valedictorian, and attended Hamilton School of Business.

She was united in marriage to Omke E. Doeden on June 22, 1946, in her parent’s home at rural Allison, Iowa.

Shirley served two different periods as Deputy Treasurer in the Butler County Treasurer’s Office as well as being a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of the Allison United Church of Christ, served on Shirley Y. Doeden the church Official Board and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship.

Shirley was a member of the Allison AmVets Auxiliary Post 88 for over 60 years and was a volunteer for Cedar Valley Hospice.

Shirley is survived by her son James E. (Peg) Doeden of Ankeny, daughter Jacqueline A. (Alan) Schoneman of Clarksville, son Jay S. Doeden of Washington, D.C., six grandchildren: Jennifer J. Anderson, Christie L. (Claude) Smith, Steve C. Doeden, Alyssa V. Doeden, Shannon E. (Mark) Ousley, Chad E. (Laura) Schoneman, and nine great-grandchildren: Claude A. Smith, Jessica K. Smith, Oliver R. Smith, Andrew J. Doeden, Ashlie M. Doeden, Jenna R. Doeden, Jett V. Ousley, Skyylan V. Ousley and Abigail M. Schoneman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and daughterin- law Nancy S. Doeden.

Shirley will be remembered for her deep interest and care of her family, her love for ballroom dancing and big band music, her interest in the local Allison community and her respect and admiration for those individuals that have provided service to the United States.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 16, 2010, at the United Church of Christ in Allison with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa. Pastor Ralph Wedeking officiated the service.

Carl Andrew Cummings

Carl Andrew Cummings, age 47, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at his home in Parkersburg, from lung cancer.

Harry Hemmen, age 89, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, from natural causes.

Randy Lee Johnson

Randy Lee Johnson, age 29, of Clarksville, died Thursday, August 19, 2010, in Waverly, Iowa from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Randy was born on June 2, 1981 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Mike and Karen (Gaffney) Johnson. He was raised in Waterloo and attended Waterloo East High School.

On October 7, 2005 he was united in marriage to Laure Ertz at the Rotary Reserve in Cedar Falls. He worked for Feldmeier Equipment in Shell Rock, and most recently GMT Corporation in Waverly as a Welder.

Randy enjoyed being a little crazy, cars (Ford Mustangs), motorcycles, Kansas City Chiefs, playing playstation, camping, boating, swimming, his pit bulls Spring and Brady, barbequing, playing poker, entertaining kids, and playing golf.

He was Sergeant at Arms for the Guardians of the Children Motorcycle Organization.

Randy’s memory is honored by his wife, Laure Johnson of Clarksville, his parents, Mike and Karen Johnson of Dewar, a sister, Robin Johnson of Waterloo, a brother Ryan Johnson of Jacksonville, North Carolina, his paternal grandmother, Shirley Duvall of Tama, mother and fatherin- law, Walter and Sherry Ertz of Cedar Falls, a sister-in-law, Kristy Plucker and husband Kyle, and three nephews, Malachi, Malik, and Owen.

Randy was preceded by his maternal grandparents, Gilbert and Linda Gaffney and his paternal grandfather, Thomas Johnson.

Randy has been cremated and memorial service and time of sharing will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 27, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. A time of fellowship and dinner will be held following the service at 5:00 p.m. at the Dewar Community Hall.

Helen Elizabeth Fincel

Helen Elizabeth Fincel, age 89, formerly of Aplington, Iowa, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at the Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo, Iowa.

Funeral Services were held Friday, August 20, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington with Pastor Michael McLane officiating. Burial was held in Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley, Iowa.

Roberta Mae Barth

Funeral services for Roberta Mae Barth, 91, of Greene, were held Saturday, August 21, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Roberta Mae Boyd was born May 27, 1919, in Benezette Township, Butler County, near Aredale, Iowa, a daughter of Robert and Sarah (Courtney) Boyd and died Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.
