Funeral Services for Minnie Smith, age 88, of Aplington, Iowa, are pending at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington. Tillie died Monday, February 23, 2004, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa, from natural causes. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.


Esther Busma

Esther Busma, 83, of Dumont, Iowa passed away February 13, 2004 at the Dumont Care Center in Dumont. She was born April 15, 1920 in Austinville, Iowa to Herman F. and Barbara (Kannegieter) Garrels. Esther attended rural Butler County Country Schools. She married Harmon Busma on November 28, 1940 in Dumont, Iowa. Esther was a homemaker and also was a correspondent to a number of local newspapers from 1959 to 2004. She was an active member of the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont. She was the pastor’s secretary from 1975 to 2003. She was also a Sunday School teacher as well as a Catechism teacher. Esther belonged to the Dumont Care Review for 14 years. She is survived by a daughter Kay Busma of Hampton, daughter-in-law Sandy Busma of Granger, sister-in-law Miriam Garrels of Emmetsburg; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and three great step grandchildren. Esther is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons (Keith and Roger), one brother (Elmer) and one sister (Helen). Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accom-panying soloist, Cheryl Scholten. Pallbearers were Mark Gerdes, Carter Seidel, Dean Deuell, Otto Tjaden, Harris Bettenga and Clifford Winkowitsch. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Coleen M. Courvoisier

Coleen M. Courvoisier, 86, of Greenville, IL passed away at 9:50 p.m., Friday, February 20, 2004 at Utlaut Memorial Hospital, Greenville, IL. She was born the daughter of Frederick William and Meta Margaret (Fick) Kollmann near Greene, on October 11, 1917 and raised on a farm in Butler County, Iowa. She attended Mt. Nebo Country School. She later worked at Hinson manufacturing war materials for four years. Also worked at Wicks Organ in Highland before moving to a farm north in Bond Co. in 1948. She also worked in Utlaut Memorial Hospital and was active in Utlaut Hospital Auxiliary especially the Utlaut Hospital Bazaar. On December 29, 1946 she was united in marriage to Philippe A. Courvoisier in Waverly, Iowa. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hillsboro, IL, a member of Home Bureau, Home Extension and Utlaut Hospital Auxiliary. Coleen is survived by her husband Philippe Courvoisier; a son: David Philip Courvoisier of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters: Joan M. (Mrs. John Crisman) of Gainesville, Florida and Nancy D. Courvoisier, wife of George Ringler of Champaign, IL; a sister: Dorothy M. Kollmann of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Marvin Kollmann, Glenn H. Kollmann and Frederick Kollmann (Dorothy’s twin). Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville, IL with Pastor Kenneth Sandlin officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Utlaut Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Burial was in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home of Greenville, IL was in charge of arrangements.


Iris Molsberry Marple

Iris Molsberry Marple, 95, of Modesto, CA, died Thursday at English Oaks Convalescent Hospital. Mrs. Marple was a native of Clarksville, Iowa, and lived in Modesto 45 years. She was a homemaker. She was a former member of Soroptimist International, the American Association of University Women, the Symphony Guild and the Presbyterian Church. She volunteered at Ralston Towers, Marple Manor and Memorial Medical Center. She enjoyed bridge, travel and the theater. She is survived by her children, Janice King of Modesto and Penny Merchant of Brookings, Ore.; sister, Wanda Molsberry Bates of Manhattan, Kan.; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Marple. Remembrances may be made to Special Olympics, 400 12th St., Suite 7, Modesto, CA 95354.


Marie Teresa Henley

Marie Teresa Henley, the daughter of Neal and Helen (Johnston) George, was born May 28, 1962 at Albuquerque, New Mexico. She attended school at Janesville Consolidated School in Iowa where she graduated from high school in 1980. On May 28, 1993 she was married to Gregory J. Henley at the Methodist Church in Clear Lake. They lived in the Garner area where they raised their two sons, Terence, age 11, and Patrick, age 5. Her life was devoted to her boys. Marie was employed as a pharmacy technician at the Corner Drug Store in Clear Lake. She enjoyed camping, horseback riding, gardening, cats, riding motorcycles with her husband, Greg, and especially spending time with her family. Marie is survived by her husband, Greg, of Miller; two sons, Terence and Patrick Henley; her parents, Neal and Helen George of Janesville; a sister, Carol and husband Gene Anhalt of Jesup; two brothers, Ken George and wife Christy of Kansas City, Missouri and David George and wife Mary of Cass Lake, Minnesota; father- and mother-in-law, Bill and Shirley Henley of Clarksville; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held February 9, 2004, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with Rev. Robert Bronson officiating. Organist was Beverly Cataldo and soloist was Doug Hayes. Casket bearers were Jeff Henley, Brian Henley, Ken George, David George, Scott Quastad, and Gene Anhalt. Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


William Shawn Clark

William Shawn Clark, age 33, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of William Stephen and Shirley (Bridges) Clark on April 11, 1970, Waverly, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from Clarksville Community High School in 1988. He graduated from Hawkeye Community College in 1990 with an Associate in Applied Sciences degree in Farm Management. Shawn was united in marriage to Jody Vance at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They reside near Clarksville, where he farmed and raised hogs. Shawn was currently employed at G & R Publishing in Waverly as a Supervisor at the purchasing warehouse. He was a loving husband and father and a good provider. As a child Shawn accepted the Lord as his personal Savior and followed in believer’s baptism several years later. He was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ where he served on the church council. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, camping and fishing and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He officiated at numerous football games and enjoyed taking his sons to wrestling meets. Shawn loved life with his children and especially liked to tease his loved ones. He enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, playing cards, and especially loved his dogs. On Monday, February 16, 2004, Shawn died at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Todd Stephen Clark, Jr., his paternal grandparents, William Howard and Edna Clark. Shawn is survived by his wife, Jody Clark of Clarksville; two sons, Grant Alexander (7 years) and William Garet (5 years) at home; an unborn child due July of this year; his parents, Steve and Shirley Clark of Clarksville; one brother, Todd (Krista) Clark of Omaha, Nebraska and their daughter, Aricka; two sisters, Sherri (Jim) Beasley of Waverly and five sons, Joshua, Kaleb, Daniel, Shawn and Izaak Miller; Amy (Bly) Gage of Des Moines and their daughter, Riley; maternal grandparents, George and Ruth Bridges of Waverly; and father- and mother-in-law, Frank and Barb Vance of Clarksville. Funeral Services were at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 19, 2004, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Clarksville, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. David Walters and Pastor Brian Wilkens. The Organist was Sharon Leerhoff, the vocalists were Michele & Aimee Lodge singing “His Eye Is On the Sparrow,” the congregational Hymn was “Christ Arose” and the recessional music was “Country Boy Can Survive.” The Honorary Casketbearers were Kaleb Miller, Daniel Miller, Izaak Miller and Shawn Miller. The Casketbearers were Chad Milius, Chad Backer, Eric Trees, Brad Bridges, David Bridges, Joshua Miller, Henry Vance and Mike Clark. Interment was at Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. The Flower Committee was Dan & Shirley Clark, Brock & Kim Lodge, Bart & Deb Lodge. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Minnie Smith

Minnie Smith, age 88, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Richard and Annie Kuper on May 8, 1915, in Steamboat Rock, Iowa. She received her education from the county school near her childhood home near Austinville, Iowa. Minnie was united in marriage with Henry Smith, Jr. on November 25, 1936, in Waterloo, Iowa. Minnie and Henry made their home for a short time in Austinville then they moved to their present home in Aplington. Minnie’s main occupation was taking care of her home and family. She also cleaned at the Post Office and the Motel in Aplington, and for ten years she worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo. Minnie was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She always grew some of the best geraniums. Minnie liked to take fishing trips with her family to Harpers Ferry, Iowa, where they had a trailer. She was an excellent cook and the family always loved the meals she prepared for them. Minnie died Monday, February 23, 2004, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Jennie Mulder and Sena Spree; and three brothers, Harm, Richard and John Kuper. Minnie is survived by: her husband, Henry Smith, Jr. of Aplington, Iowa; one son, Gary (Nancy) Smith, Bella Vista, Arkansas; two daughters, Deb (Harris) Holm, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Norma Warren of Marion, Iowa; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one sister, Annie Crosser, Owasa, Iowa. Funeral Services were at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 26, 2004, at the First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Harlan DeJong. The organist was Lois Wessels, the vocalist was Dayna Holm who sang ”Amazing Grace.” The Congregational Hymns were ”Old Rugged Cross” and ”In the Garden.” Casketbearers were Gary Smith, Harris Holm, Kyle Larson, Jeff Smith, Jason Holm and Merle Uhlenhopp. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Gladys Ann Bierman

Gladys Ann Bierman, age 69, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ben and Grace (DeVries) Behrends on March 30, 1934, at the home of her parents in rural Austinville, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from Aplington High School. Gladys Behrends was united in marriage with Vernon Bierman on June 2, 1954, in Ackley, Iowa. The couple lived on their farm in rural Aplington where Gladys enjoyed being a mother and farm wife. Gladys was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington and of the Ladies Guild. She was formerly a Junior Choir director at the Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley. Also a member of the Amvets Auxiliary Post 83 in Kesley. She spent a lot of time in her gardens and baking, sewing, doing embroidery and going fishing. Most of all, she loved spending time with the grandkids. Gladys died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents. Gladys is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Vernon Bierman, Aplington, Iowa; one son, Marvin (Darla) Bierman, Aplington, Iowa; three daughters, Geniece (David) Wright, West Des Moines, Iowa; Judy (Gaylen) Eilderts, Aplington, Iowa; Mary Jo (Duane) Ohnemus, Milo, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild; four brothers, Edward (Shirley) Behrends, New Hartford, Iowa; Harold (Joan) Behrends, Ackley, Iowa; DeWayne (Kathy) Behrends, Evansdale, Iowa; Larry (Gail) Behrends, Mason City, Iowa and one sister, Linda Rigg (fiancé James Allen), Mason City, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2004, at the First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan R. DeJong presiding. A Special Reading was done by Amy Stahl and Shelby Bierman. Organist was Marilyn Poppens. Vocalist Renise Aswegen sang “How Great Thou Art” and “One Day At A Time.” Hymns were “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Jon Stahl, Curt Stahl, Eric Bierman, Dustan Eilderts, Evan Stahl, and Austin Wright. Honorary Casketbearers were Michele Bierman, Shelby Bierman, Amy Stahl, Kelly Eilderts, Elmer Hendricks and Bob Poppens. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the family.


Elmer Merle Graham

Elmer Merle Graham, age 79, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Stanley and Marion (Billman) Graham on September 3, 1924, rural Butler County, north of Parkersburg, Iowa. He received his education from a rural country school. Elmer served in the United States Army during World War II On May 31, 1947, Elmer was united in marriage with Leola Dring at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They made their home and lived their entire married life in Parkersburg. For a short time Elmer owned and operated a gas station in Parkersburg and also drove semi truck. He was employed by Waterloo John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, Iowa, for 31 years. Elmer was very handy and was considered a Jack of all trades and master of all. Elmer was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. He enjoyed golfing, riding his “90” motorcycle and watching the cars go by from his front yard. His biggest joy in life was spending time with his granddaughters Melissa and Miekka. In his spare time he enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards and wintering in Texas. He also enjoyed helping anyone and everyone who had a need that he could fulfill. On February 25, 2004, Elmer died at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, of cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola; two sons, Keith and Clark Graham; a grandson, Michael Richard Graham; his parents, Stanley and Marion Graham; two brothers, Ralph and Richard Graham; and a sister, Marlys Schneiderman. Elmer is survived by one daughter, Jo Rider of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two granddaughters, Melissa Aalfs of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Miekka Aalfs of Parkersburg, Iowa; one brother, Eugene Graham of Parkersburg; one sister, Bethel (Jim) Scourick of Aplington, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Herman Schneiderman of Parkersburg, Iowa and Doug Miller of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Graham of Manchester, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2004 at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa. Rev. Paul Schaedig officiated. Organist was Linda Truax and Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Rock of Ages.” Special Music were the songs, “To Where You Are” and “Daddy’s Hands.” Honorary Casketbearers were Steve Graham, Jim Scourick Jr., and Jay Scourick. Casketbearers were Doyle Schneiderman, Brad Schneiderman, Mark Schneiderman, Todd Schneiderman, Jerry Wessels, and Lee Aalfs. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery Parkersburg, Iowa with Full Military Rites conducted by Parkersburg American Legion Post #285. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the family.


Carol Maurine Johnson

 Carol Maurine Johnson was born January 3, 1946, the daughter of Orval and Harriett Bennett Hasty in Sioux City, Iowa. She was 4 ½ years old when the family moved to Parkersburg. Carol graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1964. She attended the University of Iowa where she was a member of the Highlanders, playing bagpipes. She later got her degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Carol married Charles Michael Johnson on January 30, 1970 in Texas. Mike was a pilot in the Air Force. They lived at various Air Force bases throughout the United States. Mike was killed in an airplane accident in 1986. She then returned to Parkersburg with her two sons. Carol’s hobbies included reading, music, needlepoint and she loved her pets, especially Toby. She served as Head Librarian at Aplington and later in Parkersburg. She volunteered at the Parkersburg Nutrition Center. Carol died Sunday, February 22, 2004 in her home in Parkersburg from natural causes. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Johnson. She is survived by two sons, Michael (fiancé Lakesha King), Danville, Kentucky and Alex (Kelly), Lincoln, Nebraska; two granddaughters, Maleigha and Amanda; her parents, Orval and Harriett Hasty, Parkersburg, Iowa; two sisters, Gail (Jim) Hartman of Lenox, Iowa and Becky (Leon) Thorne, Parkersburg, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at the United Methodist Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Betsy Piette officiating. Organist is Sheila Groeneveld. Vocalist Stan Thompson will sing “He Lives.” Congregational Hymns are “Sweet, Sweet Spirit,” “In the Garden,” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Honorary Casketbearers are Blayne Hartman, Donald Hartman, Megan Heesch, Dustin Thorne, Hayley Foster, and Brynn Thorne. Inurnment is in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Nick Clemens

Nick Clemens, 48, of Hampton, Iowa passed away February 25, 2004 at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton, Iowa. Nick was born on November 13, 1955 in Hampton to Floyd Laverne and Olga Louise (Anderson) Clemens. Nick graduated from Hampton High School in 1974. He worked numerous jobs. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton, Iowa. Nick liked reptiles and other animals. He loved fitness and going for walks. He is survived by his brother-in-law Dale Nelson of Grinnell; niece Lynn Nelson of Grinnell; nephew Ben Nelson of Grinnell; uncle and aunt Harley and Ruth Clemens of Naperville, Illinois; uncle Wayne Zimmerman of Bristow; friend Janet Langland of Hampton; friend Jeanette Borchardt of Nora Springs and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, sister and one aunt. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2004 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton with Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jean Sandvig accom-panying the congregational singing. Final resting place was in the Harlan Cemetery rural Dumont, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Sophie Weichers

Sophie Weichers, 88, of Charles City, Iowa, formerly of Dumont, Iowa passed away February 24, 2004 at the Chautauqua Nursing Home in Charles City. Sophie was born on April 28, 1915 in Dumont, to Adolf and Jennie (Ubben) Borneman. She attended Dumont Community Schools. Sophie was married on September 28, 1932 in Dumont to Dick Weichers. She was a homemaker until her husband passed away and she became a Nurses Aid at the Dumont Care Center. She attended the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. Survivors include two sons: Richard and wife Carol Weichers of Cedar Falls and Robert and wife Janet Weichers of Hutchinson, Kansas; two daughters: Phyllis and husband Merlin Numelin of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Marilyn and husband Robert Marker of Charles City; sister: Gertrude Blohm of Dumont; sister-in-law: Lila Borneman of Dumont; twelve grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, one sister, one grandson and one great grandson. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 27, 2004 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying soloist, Mrs. Norman Brown. The usher was Harold Reents and pallbearers were Jacob Skurka, Toni Sutton, Wayne Weichers, Rob Weichers, Terri DeLaHunt and Dustin Netzinger. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Clarence E. Mead

Clarence E. Mead, age 74, of Aplington, Iowa, was born in Butler County, Iowa, the son of William C. Mead and Fannie Lindaman Mead Cole, on December 1, 1929. He attended Kesley and Aplington Schools. He served in the United States Marine Corp 1951-1953 (13 months of which he served in combat in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division). Upon returning from the Marine Corp, he resumed work at the Rath Packing Company, Waterloo, Iowa. Clarence was united in marriage with Catherine Heddinger on February 8, 1954, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, Iowa. In 1956, he and his wife moved to Kesley at which time he was a salesman for Morman Manufacturing Company. He later took the position of Postmaster at the Kesley Post Office from 1960–1962. In 1969 he also was in partnership with his brother, Gloy Mead in the Dike Grocery. He later started the Mead Roofing Business. In 1977 he and his wife moved to Aplington where he continued to operate the Mead Roofing Business and also had a rental business which he owned and managed. Due to health reasons he later retired from the roofing business. He was a member of the Kesley Amvets and a previous member of Dumont Bowling where he was a league member. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. On March 6, 2004, Clarence died at his home in Aplington of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Clifford Mead Clarence is survived by his wife, Catherine; two daughters, Deb (Mark) Blythe of Aplington and Julie Devine of Clear Lake, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jeff Blythe, Nikki Blythe, Angela Devine, Missy Devine and Langdon Devine; one great grandchild, Jadyn Devine; three brothers, Paul (Barb) Mead of New Hartford, Richard (Mary) Mead of Waterloo, Gloy (Rosalie) Mead of Cedar Falls; a sister, Darlene Cook of Des Moines, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Mead of Cedar Falls. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Greg Smith officiating. Organist was Leneé Pollock. Vocalist Russell Meyer sang “How Great Thou Art.” Special Music was “Angel.” Congregational Hymns were “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Scott Mead, Jim Eckhoff, Edward Kugel, Dave Krejchi, Rod Mead and Brian Mead. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa with Full Military Rites by the Kesley AMVETS. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Donald D. Williamson age 78 of Glenville will be held on Tuesday, March 9,2004 at 10:00 a.m. from the Glenville United Methodist Church. Pastor Don Malinsky will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Freeborn County Servicemen’s Organization. Donald died on Friday, March 5,2004 at the V A Medical Center in Minneapolis. Donald Dean Williamson was born on March 19,1925 in Glenville the son of Ernest and Fannie Grace (Kral) Williamson. He attended Glenville grade school and Albert Lea High School.. Donald served his country during WWII in the US Army. After his discharge he returned to Freeborn County. On January 2, 1944, Donald was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Tostenson. Donald owned and operated the local grocery store for 26 years, owned and drove his school bus, hauled mail and retired from Ulland Bros. in June 2002 where he was a scale man and loader operator. Donald also worked on the Alaskan pipeline as a younger man. Donald enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening and most special to him was the time that he would spend talking with his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling around the county sightseeing and he and Evelyn enjoyed the times that they spent at Mystic Lake. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, Glenville, children; Dianne and husband Larry Roerish, Rochester, Adeline and husband John Rust, Clarks Grove, Dawn Knaack, Glenville, Mary Ann Olson, Albert Lea, Donald Williamson and Mary, Allison, lA., Douglas Williamson, Federal Dam, MN. and Jim and wife Cindy Williamson, Glenville Grandchildren; Chad and wife Sherry Williamson, Tonya Williamson, Eric Roerish, Elissa Roerish, Brandon Cech, Barry and wife Katie Cech, Katie Rust, Cody Knaack and special friend Jill and her son Wyatt, Jesse Knaack, Jackie Knaack, Aaron Williamson, Lindy Williamson, Josh and Jenny Reyerson, Seth Olson, Nara Olson and Derek Olson. Memorial services for Cecil Robert Cole, 93, of Greene were held Saturday, March 6, at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet and Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Inurnment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene at a later date. There will be no visitation as his remains were cremated. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Cecil R. Cole Memorial Fund in care of the family at P. O. Box 512, Greene, Iowa 50636. Cecil Robert Cole was born April 2, 1910, in Tama County a son of Robert and Ella Josephine (Dailey) Cole, and died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. He attended and graduated from Geneseo Consolidated School in Tama County in 1929. On January 24, 1930, he married Jean Merritt at Geneseo Methodist Church. On February 1, 1930, they moved to Greene where his father purchased the IH dealership from Lou Hesalroad. They operated Cole Implement until the business was sold to John McRoberts. He continued to work at the Implement until February 1944, when Jean and Cecil moved to their farm east of Greene, where they resided until the spring of 2001, when they moved to their present home in Greene. Cecil and Jean loved each other and together loved their family. They worked together in the operation of the farm and provided a home for their family. Cecil loved his IH Tractors. He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Jean of Greene; and their children: Dean (Marilyn) Cole of Longville, MN, and Paulette (Mike) Maxson of Greene; 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great- grandchildren. Irene Evans

Irene Evans, 86, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Monday, March 1, 2004 at her residence in Waverly. Irene was born on May 18, 1917 in Arriba, Colorado. She attended grade school and high school in Armstrong, Iowa. On February 8, 1942, she was united in marriage to Rolland L. Evans in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1944, the couple returned to Iowa where they farmed north of Waverly. In 1971, they moved off of the farm and to their present home in Waverly. Irene was a cook for several years at the Waverly Convalescent Home in Waverly. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, playing cards and scrabble, needle work, enjoyed her soap operas and was a wonderful cook. Survivors are her children, Richard Dundas of Anaheim, California, Les Evans and his wife, Darlys of New Hartford, Iowa, Dixie Proctor and her husband, Louis of Waterloo, Iowa, Wynette Mills and her husband, Loel of Waverly, Iowa, Vicki Johnson and her husband, Lyle of Forest City, Iowa and Rebecca Lockwood and her husband, Rick of Oakland, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a sister, Eldora Mooney of Waverly, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rolland on February 25, 1999; son, Robert; sister, Ethel Wirtz and by three brothers, Fay, Harold, and Russell Palmer. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 5, 2004 at 10:00 am the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, Iowa. Burial will be in the Horton Cemetery in Horton, Iowa. Ruth Marjorie Crawford

Ruth Marjorie Crawford, 88, of Allison, Iowa, died Thursday afternoon, March 4, 2004, at the Allison Health Care Center of natural causes. Ruth was born on December 2, 1915, in Allison, Iowa, the daughter of Claude and Verena (Buroker) Crawford. She attended school in Allison, graduating from the Allison High School in 1933. Ruth wrote for many local newspapers in the area and also sold Avon Products. Ruth made her home in Allison, where she cared for her parents for many years until 1983, when she moved to Waverly, following the death of her mother. She lived with her sister and her husband, Marie and Scott Whitley until she became a resident of the Allison Health Care Center on July 20, 2001. While in Allison, Ruth was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. Ruth enjoyed painting and needlework, but most of all she loved writing letters to all of her family and friends. Ruth is survived by her sister and her husband, Marie and Scott Whitley of Waverly, Iowa, 3 nephews and their families, Larry Crawford of Allison, Iowa, Richard Crawford of Des Moines, Iowa, Jeff Whitley of Lakewood Colorado; 4 nieces, Patricia (Gene) Brockway of Evansdale, Iowa, Jill (Wade) Miller and Cindy Kugel all of Waverly, Heather (Brian) McClatchey of Iowa City, Iowa, and also survived by many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Ernest Crawford. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 8, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Rev. He was born on and lived on the home farm his entire life except for his military service. In April 1963 he married Lila Schnell. The couple later divorced. Jay was a member of the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake and held memberships in VFW Post 6161 in Leland and American Legion Post 409 in Crystal Lake. Jay is survived by his four children: daughters Verla Nolte of Ackley and Lanette Benson of Greene and sons Brian Benson of Aplington and David Benson of Allison; his sister Opal Seeberger of Mason City, 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Virgil Benson and sister Viola Moen.


Clarence D. Meyer

Clarence D. Meyer, age 84, of Aplington, Iowa, was born November 27, 1919, in Aplington, Iowa, the son of Ontjie and Katherine Janssen Meyer. He received his education from the Aplington Community School. He attended the Aviation Industries Tech. School in Wichita, Kansas, and became an employee of Lockheed Aircraft Corp., Burbank, California. In 1943, during World War II, Clarence entered the United States 8th Army Air Force. In 1946, after an honorable discharge, Clarence returned to Aplington and became a business associate and owner of Meyer Auto Company Clarence was united in marriage with Sylvia Johnson on June 10, 1951, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lime Springs, Iowa. Clarence served as the Mayor of Aplington from 1952-1978. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa, and served on the Church Council. In 1952, Clarence became a substitute rural mail carrier and a full time carrier in 1976 at the Ackley and Aplington Post Offices, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Aplington Amvets Post #102 and a volunteer fireman for the Aplington Fire Department. During retirement, he delivered recreational vehicles for Winnebago and did volunteer work at the Aplington golf course. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, golfing and snowmobiling with family and friends. At 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2004, Clarence died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents. Clarence is survived by his wife, Sylvia Meyer, Aplington, Iowa; one son, Brian (Shari) Meyer, Aplington, Iowa; one step-grandson, Alex Kreimeyer, Aplington, and one sister, Marian Frahm, Santa Ana, California. Funeral Service were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2004, at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Paul Scheadig officiating. Organist was Janet Mennen. Congregational Hymns were “Lift High the Cross,” “Hymn of Promise” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were members of the Aplington Amvets Post #102. Flower Committee was Mary Fink and Norma Jean Miller. Internment was in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa with Military Rites provided by the Aplington Amvets Post #102. Evalyn M. Zimmerman, 76, of Dumont, passed away March 28, 2004 at the Dumont Care Center in Dumont. She was born November 27, 1927 in Dumont, Iowa to Fred and Delia (Brown) Sorenson. Evalyn graduated from Dumont High School. She was married to Karl Zimmerman but later divorced. Evelyn was a homemaker. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont and a 50 year member of the Eastern Star. She was also an avid reader. Evalyn is survived by two daughters: Mary Zweck of Manly and Kay and husband Greg Mason of Aredale; a son: John and wife Shelly Zimmerman of Aredale; a sister: Velma Hirst of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law: Virginia Sorenson of La Grange, Illinois and Helen and husband John Wallace of Ashland, Kentucky; seven grandchildren: Breann Zweck, Leonard Zweck, Nikita Zweck, Chad Mason, Jay Cee Mason, Julia Zimmerman and Jeff Zimmerman. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: George and Myrvel. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 11, 2004 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying soloist, Mrs. Norman Brown. The ushers were Harold Reents and Richard Eisentrager. Helen Sarah “Sally” Corsello

Helen Sarah “Sally” Corsello, age 77, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry Hollen and Mattie Randall Magner on April 21, 1926 in Waterloo, Iowa. She received her education in the Waterloo schools and attended Hawkeye Technical College. Sally was united in marriage with Russell Turner in November, 1944. They later divorced. To this union, one son, Russell Michael Turner was born. On April 14, 1973, she married Dominic J. Corsello at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Waterloo until her husband transferred as Post Master to Aplington in 1977, where he retired in 1989 after 44 years of service Sally worked at factories in Anderson, Indiana and Waterloo, Iowa, during World War II, then later at Cutler Hardware in Waterloo. She was a sincere Christian. She was active in the Aplington Women’s Club. She especially enjoyed reading, needlework, crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling and her cats. Sally died Sunday, March 7, 2004 at Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents and one step-daughter, Patricia Corsello who died on December 7, 2003. She is survived by her husband, Dominic Corsello, Aplington, Iowa; and one son, Russell (Sharon) Turner, Omaha, Nebraska; two stepsons, James (Sharon) Corsello, Mason City, Iowa and Dominic (Tracy) Corsello, Des Moines, Iowa; two grandchildren, Michael John (Alena) Turner, Salem, Oregon and Ausha Kirby; nine step-grandchildren, James (Terri) Corsello, Jr., Anthony (Kathy) Corsello, Christine Corsello, James (Dana) Mather, Benjamin Mather, Michelle Mather, Denise Schumacher, Desiree Menchaca, Terri O’quinn; one great-grandchild; nine step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marian (Gilbert) Stoddard, Jesup, Iowa. Louis A. Litterer

Funeral services for Louis A. Litterer, 88, of Greene, were held Monday March 15, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Louis Litterer Memorial Fund in care of the family. Louis A. Litterer was born February 10, 1916 in Pleasant Grove Township, Floyd County, a son of Fred and Mary (Scheidecker) Litterer, and died Friday, March 12, 2004 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene with his loving family at his bedside. He received his education in the rural Pleasant Grove Township School and as a young man started farming southeast of Greene. On October 3, 1938, he was united in marriage to Mabel A. Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union were born seven children. Louie and Mabel farmed southeast of Greene for 54 years before moving into Greene in 1992. They moved into the Liebe Care Center in December 1999. Louie was proud to be a farmer and worked hard at building up his farming operation and providing for his family. His farming interests included dairy farming, raising Hampshire Hogs and sheep. He was a dealer for Crows Seed Co. for many years. He enjoyed working with horses on the farm and as a pastime. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greene, where he served as a trustee and elder of the church. He was a member of the Greene Retirement Housing Board, vice president of the Butler County Association for Retarded Citizens, volunteer for the Hawkeye Valley Meals on Wheels. Louie was always willing to help out in the neighborhood wherever there was a need. Living family members include his loving wife Mabel of Greene; four daughters: Wilma (Wayne) Schmitt of Forest Lake, MN, Loretta (Loren) Johnson of Springfield, IL, Carol Herrmann of Oregon,WI, Phyllis Litterer of Clear Lake, three sons: Charles (Maggie) Litterer of Mansfield, TX, Donald (Judy) Litterer of Shell Rock, and Merlin (Linda) Litterer of Greene; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; one sister: Anna (Francis) Brinkman of Greene; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister: Eva Horn; one brother: Leonard Litterer; and one great-granddaughter: Jennifer Lynn Litterer. Loren C. Johnson

Loren C. Johnson, 67, of Mason City and formerly from Shell Rock, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City, Iowa. Loren was born on August 2, 1936, the son of Remko and Reuie (Ressler) Johnson in rural Kesley, Iowa. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith on May 20, 1962. He attended country school at the Norton Corners. Loren worked as a handy man and hired hand for area farmers. He was also employed by the city of Waverly as a mower and also was a caretaker at the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa. He enjoyed genealogy, talking about farming and joking with whom ever he was visiting with. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, Iowa. Survivors are his two sisters Ann Jensen of New Hartford, Iowa and Effie Otterstein of Lodi, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Frieda Pohl, Roy Johnson, Margery Johnson and Leslie Johnson Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 1:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly with Pastor Steven McGinley officiating.  Robert “Bob” John Thrasher

Robert Thrasher age 80, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of William and Pearl (Lipps) Thrasher on May 17, 1923, Parkersburg, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from the Parkersburg High School. Bob served in the United States Air Force from 1943 – 1946 in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. On May 12, 1952, Bob was united in marriage with Johanna Luebbers at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parkersburg. They made their home in rural Allison, Iowa, where Bob worked with his father-in-law on the farm. They moved to Parkersburg in 1955 and Bob bought the Standard Gas Station. A year later he sold the business and worked for a short time at Heine Implement in Parkersburg. In 1958 he began working at John Deere’s until 1985 when he retired. Bob was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was a life long member of the Aplington AMVETS and was a member of the Parkersburg American Legion. He volunteered as a fireman for over 50 years and was an honorary fireman for another 10 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing especially at their cabin on the West Fork River, north of Parkersburg. Bob died on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at his home of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, David Geertsema. Bob is survived by his wife, Jo; a daughter, Jane Thrasher of Parkersburg; and a sister, Marie Geertsema of Marion, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 22, 2004 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Parkersburg, Iowa. Officiating was Father Dennis Quint. Organist was Joan Nelson and Pianist was Lyndsay Petersen. Vocalist was Bill Luebbers. Congregational Hymns were “Here I Am Lord,” “We Remember,” “You Are Mine” and “Be Not Afraid.” Servers were Lita and Connor McDaniel. Gift Bearers were Donna Eager and Jan Geerstema. Jennie Bertram

Jennie Bertram, age 91, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington, from natural causes. She was born March 18, 1912, the daughter of Harm and Trena Frericks Hartema in Hardin County, near Ackley, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near her home. She was confirmed April 9, 1927, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Butler Center, Iowa, by Rev. S. Siefkes. Before her marriage, she worked as hired help in various homes. Jennie was united in marriage with Chris Bertram on January 18, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church parsonage, Clarksville, Iowa. The couple established their homes on farms in the Parkersburg and Allison areas for over 55 years. When Chris’ health failed after brain surgery, they moved to their present home in Parkersburg in June, 1989. Jennie was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church and the women’s circle where she served on various committees. She was a member of the Parkersburg Historical Society. Jennie’s main interests were helping out and working on their farm with her husband, Chris. She enjoyed raising chickens and helped take care of the cattle. Jennie loved gardening, growing flowers and later, doing ceramics. She was loved for her willingness to share her home through the years with her nieces and nephews. Jennie died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris Bertram, on June 2, 1991; her parents; four brothers, Melvin, Herman, Jerry and Edward Hartema; six sisters, Annetta Fleshner, Lorena Gould, Buelah Lindaman, Hattie Fleshner, Catherine Cuvelier and Audrey in infancy. She is survived by two sisters, Marion NcNeilus, Waverly, Iowa and Esther Nieman, Waverly, Iowa. Funeral Services for Jennie Bertram, age 91, of Parkersburg, were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg with Rev. Daniel Larson officiating. Flora (Meyer) Mehmen

Flora Mehmen was born on December 12, 1913. Her parents were Roelf and Jetta Meyer. She was born on the Meyer homestead located north of Aplington, Iowa. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Aplington. Flora graduated from Aplington High School in 1932. While in school, Flora was on a state tournament basketball team at a time when they played three-court basketball. She was also on the track team. Flora married Jake H. Mehmen on June 5, 1933. During the first years of their married life they farmed north of Parkersburg, Iowa where three sons and a daughter were born. In the early 40’s they moved onto the Meyer homestead. Two daughters were born there. On the farm, Flora raised many chickens for the sale of their eggs. They milked about twenty-five cows and fed pigs. She always had a huge garden and the cellar was lined with her canned goods to feed the family. There was everything from corn, beans, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, sauerkraut, pickles, beets, juices, jams, jellies, and her wonderful meats. Flora was famous for her breads. She also did a lot of sewing and mending. It was always a treat for the children when she took time off to take them to the grove to do some fishing. Flora was a great letter writer. When Roland and Derold were in the service, she wrote to them every day. Betty remembers receiving a letter every week with all of the family and community news. In 1966 Flora and Jake moved into Aplington. Flora was an avid reader, reading many books a year. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. Flora liked watching basketball and doing word puzzles. She loved her home, where on Sunday noon and holidays you would find many of her family gathered for dinner. Someone was always stopping by for coffee or tea. She died Thursday afternoon, March 18, 2004, at the age of 90, at Maple Manor Nursing Home, Aplington. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake Mehmen on February 2, 1989; one son, Derold on January 15, 1979; one brother, Alfred Meyer; four half-sisters, Bessie Bierman, Anna Meyer, Jennie Lauterbach, and Wilhelmine Schnucker; and three half-brothers, Albert Meyer, Henry Meyer, and Frederick Meyer. Survivors are five children and their spouses, Roland Mehmen (Norma) of Parkersburg, Kenneth Mehmen (Judy) of Aplington, Betty Thronson (David) of Ackley, Marlene Brouwer (Wayne) of Parkersburg, and Marilyn Roelfs (David) of Ackley; one daughter-in-law, Betty Mehmen of Katy, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Klooster and Marie Meyer; two sisters-in-law, Adeline Meyer and Lydia Meyer; and one brother-in-law, Calvin Schnucker. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 22, 2004, at First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Vocalist Russell Meyer sang “He Hideth My Soul.” Congregational Hymns were “I Love To Tell the Story,” “The Haven of Rest” and “How Great Thou Art.” Honorary Casketbearers were Janella Mehmen, Mary Stawniak, Becky Idstrom, Denise Wolfe, Jill Murra, and Monica Patterson. Casketbearers were Jeff Mehmen, Brent Thronson,Eric Mehmen, Jason Mehmen, Dan Brouwer and Steve Mehmen. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements.

Ella Ibeling, age 93, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Siebo and Hilka Asche Jansen on December 19, 1910, near Ackley, Iowa. She was baptized at Washington Reformed Church. Ella received her education in country schools around Ackley and Parkersburg. Ella was united in marriage with Ben Ibeling on March, 1932, in Austin, Minnesota. The couple farmed in rural Parkersburg until they retired in 1968. At that time they built a new home and moved into Parkersburg. Ben died a year later. Ella entered Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington in 2000. Ella was a member of Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid. She was a homemaker who enjoyed doing a variety of crafts, using her hands to create ceramics, wrapped hangers and she loved to play Wahoo. Ella died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded by her husband, Ben Ibeling in April, 1969 and her parents. She is survived by nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at the Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Frank Pott Officiating. Organist was Janet Johnson. Vocalist was LuGene Jansen who sang “One Day at a Time.” Congregational Hymns were “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Dale Jansen, Robert Smiens, Richard Humphrey, Ron Jansen, Ken Jansen, and Dennis Gieken. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements.
