Robert C. Fisher

08/04/04

Robert C. Fisher, 79, of Urbandale died Friday, May 7, 2004 at Mercy Hospice in Johnson, Iowa. Robert was born November 3, 1924 in Des Moines, son of William and Nancy Fisher. He served in the Navy in World War II. September 6, 1947, he was united in marriage to Pearl Lore of Clarksville, Iowa. He had his own Bob’s TV & Radio Repair Shop. He is survived by his wife Pearl of Urbandale; son Robert G. (Diane) Fisher of Urbandale; daughter Marie (Gary) Robbins of Finleyville, Pennsylvania; three sisters Mary Pierson and Opal Blackford of Des Moines; Zela Sadler of California; four brothers William Fisher of Ankeny, Jack, Jim and George Fisher of Des Moines; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services were held Monday, May 10 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home with burial at Glendale Cemetery.


Leona Johnson

Leona Johnson, age 69, of Allison, Iowa, was born on November 7, 1934, the daughter of Kenneth and Mildred Thomas Rodman at the Charles City Hospital. She graduated from Greene High School in 1953. Leona continued her education attending Business College in Omaha, Nebraska. She returned to Waterloo, Iowa, and worked as a telephone operator. Leona was united in marriage with Melbert W. Johnson on September 23, 1956, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. They moved to the Johnson Farm north east of Allison where they farmed and raised their family. Leona attended St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. She was a very good cook and always raised a huge garden. She enjoyed attending the Tractor Pulls Mel drove in. She affectionately became known as grandma to the other driver’s children at these events. She enjoyed family fishing trips to Minnesota, playing cards and board games with the grandchildren. Leona loved her family and was the greatest sports fan of her children and grandchildren. Leona died July 26, 2004, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, after battling cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Mildred Rodman. Leona is survived by her: husband, Mel Johnson, Allison, Iowa, two sons, Jay (Linda) Johnson, Allison, Iowa, and Jim (Georgene) Johnson, Allison, Iowa; one daughter, Jamie (Clint) Walters, Edgar, Montana; six grandchildren, Jason (Melissa), Jeremy, Justin, Matthew, Melissa, and Marc Johnson; two great grandchildren, Katelynn and Blake Johnson; one brother, Lyle (Katherine) Rodman, Clarkamas, Oregon; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 29, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor David Nelson officiating. Organist was Lois Roose. Vocalist Jill Johnson sang “In The Garden” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Floyd Liddle, Butch Franzen, Ron Liddle, Larry Stange, Larry Sonne and Eugene Jacobs. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Flower Committee was Vickie Jacobs and Margaret Liddle. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Helen A. Meyers

Funeral services for Helen A. Meyers, 97, of Greene, were held Friday, July 30, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Private interment services were at the Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield. Helen Arlene Orcutt was born September 2, 1906, in Plainfield, a daughter of Clarence M. And Mamie (Krieger) Orcutt, and died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. She received her education and graduated from the Plainfield High School in 1925. While attending High School she played basketball in which she held the record for the most points (60) earned in a single game, for many years. As a young lady she played piano for the movie theater in Plainfield. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and then taught rural school in Western Douglas (rural Plainfield) and in the Aredale Public Schools. On September 15, 1929, she was united in marriage to Russell Wayne Meyers at her parents home in Plainfield. To this union there were born three children: Marlene Jean, and twins: Marcele Rae and Maurice Jay. They made their home in Tripoli until 1937, when they moved to Waterloo. The following year they moved to Greene where they owned and operated the Gambles Hardware Store for 26 years. Following their retirement, they traveled throughout the United States except for Alaska. In the winter months they lived in the Southern States. Helen was baptized in the Cedar River, in the fall of 1919, and became a member of the Plainfield Baptist Church in 1921. In 1939 she joined the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where she taught Sunday School for fifteen years ,and was Supt. of the Sunday School for many years. She was past president of the Presbyterian Women, and was a faithful member to her church. Helen loved her Lord first, then her family and friends. She was a charter member of the Greene Woman’s Club, and a sixty year member of the order of Eastern Star. Living family members include two daughters: Marlene Miller and Marcele Brandt (Mel) Kramer both of Allison; seven grandchildren: Robin (Danny) Fouch of Garwin, Kevin Miller of Waterloo, Tim (Julie) Miller of Charles City, Marcy Lynn (Dave) Ubben of Winfield, Kent (Melaine) Brandt of Verona, WI, Stacy (Rod) Wagsness of Allison, Amy (Chuck) Illg of Spencer; sixteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 6, 1982, her son: Maurice Jay Meyers who died in infancy, her sons-in-law: Donald Brinkman, Joe Miller, and Steve Brandt, her parents, and one brother: Kenneth Orcutt. Harm Meyer Jr.

Harm Meyer Jr., age 90, of Dike, Iowa, was born the son of Harm Sr. and Hilke (Wubben) Meyer on September 3, 1913, in rural Buffalo Center, Iowa. The Meyer family moved to Stout, IA where Harm received his education at The Stout School, near his home. On August 30, 1937, Harm Meyer, Jr. was united in marriage with Tena Bolhuis at the Reformed Church of Stout Parsonage in Stout, Iowa. They lived with Tena’s parents for a few years and then made their home on a farm north west of Stout. In 1967, they moved to their family farm just east of Stout where Harm dedicated his life to farming and spending time with family and friends. Harm was an active member of the Reformed Church of Stout, where he served for many years as a deacon, an elder, head usher, and a member of the Men’s Fellowship Group. He served as a trustee for the Fairfield Township for many years as well. Harm also dedicated his time to help dig graves at the Stout Cemetery. At 12:30 a.m., Saturday, July 31, 2004, Harm passed away at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa of natural causes. Harm is preceded in death by his parents; one grand-daughter in infancy, Susan Kay Cordes; four brothers; five sisters; two step-brothers; and four step-sisters. Harm is survived by his wife Tena, one son, Mervan Meyer and his wife, Linda, of rural Dike, Iowa; one daughter, Velma Cordes and her husband, Virgil of Stout, Iowa; six grandchildren, Barbara (Jason) Johnson of Parkersburg, IA, Lisa (Greg) Melcher of Parkersburg, IA, Gary (Kim) Cordes of New Hartford, IA, Sheila Cordes of Stout, IA, Chris (Steph) Meyer of Fountain MN, and Shawn (Jenny) Meyer of Parkersburg, IA; five great grandchildren, Nicole (Kendall) Kannegieter of Stout, IA, Mike (Tessa) Nisius of Parkersburg, IA, Casey Melcher of Parkersburg, IA, Alyssa Cordes and Bo Cordes of New Hartford, IA; one great-great grandchild, Kayla Nisius of Parkersburg, IA. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday August 3, 2004 at the Reformed Church of Stout, Stout, Iowa with Pastor Don Ringnald officiating. Organist was Elaine Schnell. Vocalist Ray Hemmer sang “When We All Get To Heaven” and “Life’s Railway To Heaven.” Congregational Hymn was “Will There Be Any Stars.” Casketbearers were Gary Cordes, Mike Nisius, Chris Meyer, Casey Melcher, Shawn Meyer and Barbara Johnson. Interment was in Stout Cemetery, Stout, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family or to the American Diabetes Association. Leona Alice McCready

Leona Alice McCready, 81, of Longville, Minnesota passed away August 1, 2004 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. She was born January 15, 1923 in Butler County, Iowa to William and Mattie (Roose) Harms. Leona attended Allison School and graduated from Shell Rock High School. After graduation she taught country school in Butler County. Leona married Ralph R. McCready on February 2, 1943 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. They made their home in Allison where she did substituting in the Allison School system. Ralph and Leona moved to Waterloo in 1968 where she taught Special Education at Goodwill Industries in Waterloo. Ralph and Leona retired to the Longville, Minnesota area in 1985 and became members of the Salem Lutheran Church. Leona was an active member of her church belonging to Ruth Circle, serving on the Altar Guild, and helping with various activities. She also belonged to the YAH (Young at Heart) Club, the Red Hat Society and the Birthday Babes all in Longville. Leona was an avid reader, loved sewing and quilting and enjoyed being around people. Leona is survived by her son Ralph Richard (Dick) and wife Jennifer McCready Jr. of Allison, Iowa, daughter Linda and husband Terry Tyler of Pender, Nebraska, daughter Susan Plagge of Waterloo, Iowa, grandchildren Jim and wife Deb McCready, Tina and husband Ted Miller, Greg McCready, Tim McCready, Jake and wife Lora Tyler, great grandchildren Alex and Clair McCready, Taylor and Maggie Boeckmann and Abbi Miller, brother Roland “Bud” Harms, sister Joyce and husband Carl Heyenga. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Mattie Harms, husband, Ralph and grandson Benjamin Joseph Plagge. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at St. James Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Special music was provided by organist Mrs. Cecil Radcliffe accompanying the duet of Carly Russell and Lindsey Russell. Pallbearers were Denny Walsh, Scott Beltz, David Harms, Bill Heyenga, Tom Heyenga and Matt Heyenga. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Winifred “Toots” Pritchard

Winifred “Toots” Pritchard, 95, of Shell Rock and formerly of Waverly and Clarksville, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock, Iowa. Winifred was born on February 27, 1909, the daughter of Knute and Elizabeth (Zwank) Madsen in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Harold A. Pritchard at Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly, Iowa. The couple made their home in Waverly, Iowa, where they were owner/operator of the Tiny Club in Waverly for about 5 years. Following the death of her husband, Harold on June 29, 1952, she became employed by Rath Packing company. She continued working for Rath Packing for 30 plus years. In 1978, she moved to Clarksville and in 1997, she became a resident of the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville and a resident of the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock in 2002. Toots was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors are her daughter, Karen Kielman and her husband, Kendall of Clarksville, Iowa; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; son, Harold W. Pritchard on May 27, 1963; and by two sisters and two brothers. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with Father Mike Tauke presiding. Burial was in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly.


Anthony W. Kingery

Anthony W. Kingery, 52, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at his home. Anthony was born on August 25, 1951 in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Georgieann (O’Brien) Kingery. He attended school in Tripoli through the eighth grade and then attended Clay Central High School in Royal, Iowa and graduated in 1969. He was united in marriage to Micky Illingsworth on June 7, 1986 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He had worked at Terex Cranes in Waverly for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ducks Unlimited, and Harley Owners Group. He enjoyed vacations with his family, his Harley, gardening, hunting, ice fishing and Nascar. He is survived by his wife, Micky, one daughter, Morgan Kingery of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two sons, Alex and Michael Kingery both at home; his parents, Lloyd and Georgieann Kingery of Royal, Iowa; his brother and sisters and their spouses, Cindy Schroeder (Larry) of Tripoli, Iowa; Connie Connolly of Scotsdale, Arizona; Paul Kingery; Cecilia Pedersen (Larry) of Royal, Iowa; Brian Kingery (Kathy) of Waverly, Iowa; Bradley Kingery (Linda) of Edmonton, North Dakota; Cathy Jensen of Royal, Iowa; Brent Kingery of Royal, Iowa; and Greg Kingery (Debbie)of Royal, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dora and George O’Brien, his paternal grandparents, Ila and Vivian Kingery. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Burial was in Harlington Cemetery. Merle “Bud” Smith

Merle “Bud” Smith, 78, of Shell Rock, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa. Bud was born on October 24, 1925, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Harry and Nell (Norris) Smith. He attended school in Clarksville through the 10th grade. Following school, Bud entered the Navy on October 6, 1943. He served on the USS Prometheus until being honorably discharged on March 23, 1946. Bud moved back to Shell Rock after the service and began working at Schield Bantam-Koehring in 1952. On July 23, 1948, Bud was united in marriage to Alice Thompson in Shell Rock, Iowa. The couple made their home in Shell Rock. Alice died on February 15, 1965. Bud was united in marriage to Glennis Dettmer on July 12, 1968, at St. John Lutheran Church (Crane Creek) in Tripoli. Bud later retired from Schield Bantam after 35 years of service in 1987. Bud was a member of the VFW Post #2208, Amvets Post #79 and a 50 year member of the American Legion Post #393. He enjoyed fishing, his convertibles, traveling and especially spending time with his family and friends. Bud is survived by his wife Glennis of Shell Rock; seven children, Connie (Dwayne) Sessler of Shell Rock, Duane Smith of Rapid City, South Dakota, Wanda (Jim) Petersen of Oelwein, Judy Garner and her friend Sam Davis of Waverly, Joyce (John) Lubben of Shell Rock, Karen(Rich) Milius of Tripoli and Linda (Will) Hamilton of Waverly; 21 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Richard “Dick” (Oqua) Smith of Shell Rock; one sister, Catherine “Tootie” Seal of Shell Rock; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Alice in 1965; one brother, Laverne “Corky” Smith; one sister Maxine “Micky” Jacobs; and by two grandchildren, Mitchell and Michelle Garner. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 10:30 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Steven McGinley officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Shell Rock. Marlin Lindaman

Marlin Lindaman, age 91, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Martin and Carrie Kramer Lindaman on April 17, 1913 in Aplington, Iowa. He was a graduate of the Aplington High School in 1930. Marlin began farming after high school. Marlin was united in marriage with Marjorie Rae Popkes on December 25, 1939 at her mother’s house in Aplington. The couple made their home on the farm south west of Aplington. Marlin farmed for 30 years before moving to town in 1968. Marlin painted and shingled with Hank Dekker until the 1990’s. He also sold Dekalb seed corn for 20 years. Marlin was a member of Aplington Baptist Church and served on the Board of Trustees. He was on the Board of Directors for the Fern Creamery. Marlin and Marjorie traveled a lot together and visited every state in the US. He enjoyed fishing when he had the opportunity. Marlin loved his family and enjoyed visits from his grandchildren. Marlin died Thursday, August 5, 2004, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie in October of 1994; his parents; two brothers, Harry and Edwin Lindaman; and one sister, Jeanette Lindaman. Marlin is survived by his one son, Chuck (Julie) Lindaman of Waverly, Iowa; one daughter Marilyn (Ron) Krahn of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; four grandchildren, Mark (Keri) Lindaman, Steve (Jane) Lindaman, Deanna (Dan) Sarkar, and Jeremy Krahn; one great-grandchild, Grant Lindaman; 2 step-grandchildren, Stephanie Smith (fiancé, John Mohan), and Barry (Rebecca) Smith; one step great-grandchild, Zoey Smith; one brother, Harold (Ruth) Lindaman, Vinton, Iowa; and one sister, Lorene Rohlf, Waterloo, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith officiating. Organist was Cami Haugstad and Pianist was Suzie Smith. Saxophone Soloist Jeremy Krahn played “I’d Rather Have Jesus.” Congregational Hymns were “In the Garden” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.” Casketbearers were John Rohlf, John Lindaman, David Lindaman, Tom Lindaman, Dale Janssen and Steve Haugstad. Honorary Casketbearers were Tako Ubben, Ivan Lindaman and Lester Ostercamp. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

John R. Weiland

Funeral services for John R. Weiland, 93, of 611 West Traer Street, Greene, will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2004 at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Tuesday. John Ralph Weiland was born October 14, 1910, the oldest son of Ralph and Grace (Menken) Weiland, and died Saturday, August 14, 2004, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City. He received his education in Bennezette No. 7 rural school and began farming with his father at an early age. On January 10, 1934, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Allan, at the Associated Church Parsonage, in Allison. To this union were born two daughters. They made their home on a farm four miles north of Bristow where they lived for 54 years. John was an active member of The First Reformed Church of Bristow, School Director of Benn No. 7, and served on the Bristow Telephone Board, he was Farm Bureau Director, and, the Pride Seed Corn Dealer for over 25 years. His greatest pride was his Angus Cattle,and enjoyed furnishing the neighbor boys with 4-H calves. Although he was a busy farmer, he always took the time to take his family on many day fishing trips,and, picnics with neighbors and friends. John and Dorothy took many fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada, and spent about 15 winters in Wesloco, Texas. After moving to Greene in 1988 John and Dorothy joined the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. John enjoyed having coffee downtown, visiting with neighbors, sitting in his yard and later was careprovider of his wife, Dorothy, until her death in 1998. He enjoyed taking friends for rides and coffee and learned to enjoy Chinese food with his friend Esther Renning, of Waverly. Because of failing health he entered the Homestead Assisted Living in Mason City, in December of 2002. Where his daughter, Sharon, assisted with his daily needs. After a stroke in late June he entered the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City. He was always interested in family activities, and was a Cubs fan, watching many games on television. John was proud to be a part of five living generations and will be sadly missed by his daughters: June (Dale) Johnson of Greene, Sharon Agnitsch of Mason city, Grandchildren: Ann (Dave) Marsh, Lana Clark, Nathan (Dana) Smith, Craig (Anne) Johnson, Rod Smith and Krista (Jason) Benson. Great-grandchildren: Stacy Franken, Chris Franken, Daniel and Laura Marsh, Alissa Clark, Connor and Gage Smith, Carter and Sophia Benson, Alex, Ellen and Adam Johnson and one great-great-grandson: Payton. He is also survived by his brother: Paul (Betty) Weiland, of Dumont and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, brother Walter, grandson Kevin Agnitsch, and former sons-in-law Bob Agnitsch and Gary Smith. Talena Alberts

Talena Alberts, age 92, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of John W. and Nancy (Bohlen) Johnson on January 15, 1912, in Butler County, Washington Township, near Aplington, Iowa. She received her education from a country schoolhouse near her home. Talena Johnson was united in marriage with Folkert F. Alberts on October 9, 1928, in Stout, Iowa. They made their home in Kesley, Iowa, until 1948, when they moved to Parkersburg. They were later divorced. Talena held various jobs in Parkersburg over the years. She owned and operated Hiway 20 Café in Parkersburg, where she was famous for her soups and pies. She retired in 1994, and became a resident of Maple Manor in 1998. Talena was a member of the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and baking. Talena’s customers would often stop her on the street to ask her what her daily specials were and they especially enjoyed her hot beef sandwiches and graham cracker pies. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Talena would visit her grandchildren when they were in college and bring homemade cookies for them and their whole dorm. Talena died Saturday, August 14, 2004, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Harm, Johnnie, Peter, Clarence, Donald, Lawrence, and Gene Johnson; and one sister, Jeanetta Aukes. Talena is survived by two sons, Arnold (Wanda) Alberts of Alvin, Texas and Marvol “Al” (Sara) Alberts of Janesville, Iowa; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one brother, Edward Johnson of Aplington; two sisters, Lydia Bartels of Parkersburg and Nancy Carpenter of Arizona; and two sister-in-laws, Arlene Johnson of Ardale, Iowa and Shirley Johnson of Bristow, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at the First Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Pianist was Jean Bass. Soloist Stan Thompson sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were David Alberts, Michael Alberts, Mark Alberts, Chad Kuper, Dennis Bartels and Paul Johnson. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Larry Lee Lodge, Sr., 68, of Nashua passed away Tuesday morning, August 10, 2004 at his home in Nashua of pancreatic cancer. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Burial was in Lynwood Cemetery at Clarksville, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lodge; one daughter, Debra (Garry) Barlow of Nashua, IA; two sons: Larry (Laura) Lodge, Jr of Kellogg, IA and Scott Lodge of Nashua, IA; three grandchildren: Amber Barlow of Columbus, NE, Adam Barlow of Nashua, IA and Matthew Lodge of Iowa City, IA; one sister, Beverly (Mark) Dickman of Clarksville, IA. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kevin and a granddaughter, Stephanie Lodge. Larry Lee Lodge, Sr was born July 18, 1936 in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Esther (Wedeking) Lodge. He attended Jackson #11 country school and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1954. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Waidelich June 29, 1957 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. They lived in Clarksville until 1971 when they moved to Nashua. Larry worked at Cambre (Salsbury) in Charles City for 34 years as a reactor operator, retiring in 1998. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening and mushrooming. Larry enjoyed sharing the produce from his bountiful garden with friends and neighbors. He also was a member of Iowa Tree Top Cur & Feist, a coon hunting organization.

Memorial services for DelvIn J. Arjes, 61, of Greene, will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2004, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church officiating. A Flag presentation will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268, American Legion of Greene. The family will receive friends 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, where there will be a public Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Delvin John Arjes was born June 26, 1943 in Bertha, Minnesota a son of John and Mary Alice (Worden) Arjes, and died Saturday, August 21, 2004, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital. He was baptized April 8, 1944 and confirmed March 30, 1958 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. He received his education in the rural schools in Jackson Township, and the Allison Public Schools. As a young man he drove truck for Don Bauman, and was later inducted into the United States Army, on November 3, 1964. He served in Korea, and was discharged September 2, 1966.Following his discharge he became employed by the Allison Implement Co. And later by Hoodjer Construction. On April 12, 1969 he was united in marriage to Carol Diane Shreve, in Hampton. They made their home in the rural Greene area and to this union were born three sons. In 1979 he went to work for the Butler County Road Department where he has remained until his death. Delvin’s interests stems back to his roots growing up on the farm. He enjoyed going to farm sales, steam engine and tractor shows, and in recent years farm toy shows. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Carol of Greene, his three sons: Jon Arjes of Jewell, Jason Arjes of Greene, and James (Katie) Arjes of Waverly; and one brother Darvin (Cheryle)Arjes of Greene. Delvin was preceded in death by his parents. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Delvin Arjes Memorial Fund in care of the family. Phyllis M. Hansen

Phyllis M. Hansen, 80, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa after a long and courageous battle with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). Phyllis was born on December 26, 1923, the daughter of John and Lydia (Trepp) Reiher in Butler County, Iowa on a farm near Allison. She attended rural Butler and Grundy County schools and graduated from Allison High School in 1941. After graduating, she moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa and worked in the office of Viking Pump Company. While in Cedar Falls, she met Lyle W. Hansen and they were married on January 27, 1946, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. The coupled farmed in Grundy and Butler County. In 1956, the family moved to Denver and Phyllis began working in the office of the Rath Packing Company, where she worked for twenty eight and one half years until she retired in 1984. In 1959, the family moved to a farm near Plainfield, where they lived until their retirement from farming in 1976, when they moved to Waverly. Lyle died in 1989, and Phyllis remained in her Waverly home until August of 2000, when poor health required that she move to the Linden Place. After a serious fall, she entered the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, where she was lovingly and compassionately cared for until her death. Phyllis was a VFW Auxiliary member and past president of the organization, she belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, was active on St. Paul’s Lutheran Church funeral committee and served on the board of Mitchell Manor for many years. She belonged to six different card groups and loved getting together with her friends and family. Phyllis was a great gardener, baker and seamstress and many family members and friends enjoyed her special rye bread, raspberry jam and apple pies. She always took special pleasure in serving and helping others. Survivors are her four children and their spouses, Steven (Pam) Hansen of Waverly, Lynda (Gaylen) Hassman of Waverly, Loyce (Jerry) Dumke of Guttenberg, and Curtis (Sandy) Hansen of Waverly; six grandchildren, Amy Launstein, Chad Hansen, Clint Hansen, Nikki Anders, Cam Hassman, and Kevin Hansen; three step grand children, Steve Franke, Clay Dumke and Erika Clark; seven great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth (Lavern) Brocka of Allison, Marilyn (Dean) Cole of Longville, Minnesota, and Carol (Darwin) Buhman of Guttenberg; one brother, Loren (Kathy) Reiher of Readlyn; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle on June 24, 1989; and a brother, Lon. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 27, 2004 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, Iowa with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, Iowa and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be directed to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Waverly or Cedar Valley Hospice.


Michael Ray Aswegan

Michael Ray Aswegan “Cowboy,” age 46, of Clarksville, Iowa, the son of Donn and Patty (Tanner) Lewis was born on August 12, 1958, in Iowa City, Iowa. He received his education from North Tama School. Michael served in the United States Army reserves. On August 19, 1995, Michael was united in marriage with Joanne Jacobs at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Iowa. Following their marriage they remained living in Clarksville. Michael was a semi dumpster truck driver for PCI in Reinbeck, Iowa. Through the years he also did construction work. Michael was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He enjoyed going golfing, hunting and fishing. In his spare time he liked collecting coins and going metal detecting. He loved spending time with his family, especially when they went camping. Michael died on Monday, August 16, 2004, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from complications of Alpha Anti-Trypsin Deficiency. He was preceded in death by his biological father, Ray Aswegan and one brother, Cletus Lewis. Michael is survived by his wife, Joanne Ora Aswegan of Clarksville; one daughter Heather Unker of Traer, IA; two stepsons, Zackery (Melissa) Jacobs of Clarksville and Uriah Jacobs of Clarksville; one grandchild, Austin Unker of Traer, IA; his parents, Donn and Patty Lewis of Traer, IA; one brother, Craig Aswegan of Cedar Rapids, IA; two sisters, Vicky Tanner of Traer, IA and Lori Lewis of Lincoln, NE; and three sister-in-laws, Jeanette (Larry) Hallman of Zeigler, IL, Joedy (Troy) Menter of Clarksville and Jerolyn (Mark) Webb of Avondale, Arizona. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 19, 2004, at the Church of Christ in Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Val Swinton and Pastor Larry Hallman officiating. Organist was Audrey Rosenwinkle. Special Music was “I Can Only Imagine.” Soloist Jolene Engel sang “Love Can Build a Bridge.” Congregational Hymns were “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” Honorary Casketbearers were Uriah Jacobs, Ryan Menter, Austin Unker,Rodney Roose, Matthew Hallman and Kris Engel. Casketbearers were Zackery Jacobs, Robert Mannschreck, Troy Menter, Kelly Hoodjer, Charlie Keeling, Jerry Volker, James Harrison and Terry Engel. Flower Committee was Donna Buss and Carolyn Roose. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements.


Elmer Mennenga

Funeral services for Elmer Mennenga, 86, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with military honors conducted by the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene, Iowa. Elmer Mennenga was born on September 12, 1917, northeast of Ackley, a son of Henry and Gertie (Bushman)Mennenga and died Friday, August 20, 2004 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. He received his education in the Washington District No. 3 School and was baptized in the Washington Reform Church. As a young man he started farming on the family farm. On April 28, 1942 he was inducted into the United States Army where he served with the l0lst Military Police Co.A serving overseas, in Italy, for 3 years 5 months and 13 days. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern service medal, 4 Bronze Arrowheads for Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley. He also received the Meritorious Unit Award and the Fifth Army Commendation for outstanding performance. While in Italy he met Carmen Palpon, a nurse, in an Italian Army Hospital, and was later married on March 9, l946, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, in Florence, Italy. He was discharged on July 3, 1946 and they returned to Ackley. Mr. and Mrs. Mennenga farmed on the family farm in Ackley until 1957 when they moved to Howard County and farmed intil l960. In 1963 they moved to Greene where they became employed by the Albrecht Hatchery. In 1970 he became employed by Butler County Road Department. Following his retirement in 1982 he enjoyed gardening and taking care of his cars. The last ten years of his life were blessed with the friendship of Myrtle, Elsie, Leola and Sis. Elmer was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, in Greene, where he had been a member since 1964 and had served as Church Trustee and member of the Parsonage Board, serving as chairman of both for many years. He also served as church custodian. Elmer served on the Greene City Council for several terms. He will be sadly missed by his loving daughter, Sara (Dennis) Hotetz, and his granddaughter, Gina Marie (Raymond) Tucker, all of Frederick, Md., and several nieces and nephews. Elmer was preceded in death wife Carmen who died March 23, 1994, his parents, two sisters, Grace Claassen and Rose Smith, two brothers, Menne Mennenga and Herman Mennenga.
