Rose Seehusen

05/31/04

Rose Seehusen, age 89, of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Facility and formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Jacob K. and Grace Everts Muller in Grundy Center, Iowa on March 14, 1915. She received her education in a country school near the family home in Grundy County. Rose was united in marriage with Dick Seehusen on January 20, 1938, in the home of her parents. After their marriage, the couple lived and farmed near Fern and Dike. Rose helped with the farming and raised chickens. In 1987, they moved into Parkersburg. She was a lifetime member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church where she was active in the Women’s Guild, until she was unable to help. She also belonged to the Fern Neighborhood Club. Rose was known for her cooking and baking. Her family especially loved her great pies. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and babysitting for the grandchildren. A highlight for her was a trip to Germany in 1983. Rose died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Facility in Grundy County, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Grace Willms, Alice Muller, Annie DeVries and Freeda Muller; two brothers, Klaas J. Muller and Jake Muller. She is survived by her husband, Dick Seehusen of Grundy Center and two sons, LaVerne (Dorothy) Seehusen, Dike, Iowa and Larry (Linda) Seehusen of Ottumwa, Iowa; one daughter, Shirley (Louis) Schildroth, Reinbeck, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two step-grandsons; eight great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Sunday, 1:30 p.m., at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery, Holland, Iowa with Rev. Russell Muilenburg officiating. Organist was Cathy Meyers. Vocalist Gloria Willms sang “Oh, That Will Be Glory” and “Where The Roses Never Fade.” Congregational Hymn was “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.” Casket bearers were Eldon Muller, Virgil Muller, Dean Willms, Calvin Muller, Alan DeBerg and Kendall Tjepkes. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Opal Worley

Memorial services for Opal Worley, 92, formerly of Aredale, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Aredale with Pastor Robert Conners officiating. Inurnment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Opal Barnett was born September 4, 1911, in Butler County, a daughter of Ray and Minnie (Barnett) Allen, and died Thursday, December 11, 2003, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She received her education and graduated from the Dumont Public School in 1928, and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught in the Aredale Public School for several years. She was united in marriage to Carl Worley on June 1, 1938, in Aredale. To this union was born one daughter. Opal was a member ofthe United Methodist Church in Aredale for most of her life. She loved her community and hometown. Living family members include one daughter: Mary (David) McQuown of Ann Arbor, MI; four grandsons: Jesse, Jared, Joseph, and Matthew; one sister: Carol (Dean) Haugen of Fertile; two brothers: Lester (Berdine) Allen, and Dallas (Gladys) Allen, all of Dumont. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister: Audrey F. Rice; and two brothers: Vern D. Allen and Lowell J. Allen. Luman L. Steer

Funeral services for Luman L. Steer, 80, of 19782 135th Street, Greene; will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 22, 2004, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the North Vilmar Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268, American Legion of Greene, Iowa. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, and will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour before services. Luman Louis Steer was born April 4, 1924, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a son of August C. and Frieda D. (Tinnemann) Steer, and died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Allison Care Center in Allison. He was baptized May 4, 1924, and confirmed in 1939, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar. He received his education at the Coldwater No. 5 Country School. He was inducted into the United States Army on May 15, 1945, where received his basic training at Fort Sill, OK. He served Seventeen months in the European Theater in Germany, as Communications Chief and interpreter with the Hq Btry 39th F/A Bn, where he obtained the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. He was honorably discharged on November 6, 1946. He recieved the Army of the Occupation Medal, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the European Theatre Ribbon. Luman farmed in the Greene area his entire life. He loved the farm, fishing, gardening, raising English Shepherds, and horses. He enjoyed riding throughout the countryside and looking at the crops. Living family members include his brother and sister: Merlyn A. Steer and Lucy K. Steere; one niece, Merlette (Dennis) Cassmann, and one nephew, Meredith (Linda) Steere all of Greene. He is also survived by five great nieces and nephews: Jennifer Steere, Evan Steere, Ryan Steere, Terence Cassmann, and Tiffany Cassmann. Harlan W. ‘Pete” Hersey

Harlan W. ‘Pete” Hersey, age 89, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Eli F.and Minnie Koell Hersey on March 13, 1915, in Albion Township, Butler County, Iowa. He was one of eleven children. Harlan graduated from the 8th grade and enrolled in the Parkersburg, High School where he graduated in 1935. After graduation Harlan, along with his brothers, farmed the acreage just east of Sinclair – a farm which his ancestors, Joseph and Elizabeth Malita Card Codner settled in 1854. After the death of his father, Harlan and his brothers, Glen and Henry, remained on the family farm helping their mother with the day-to-day operation. With Henry in the service, Harlan and Glen continued working the family farm in addition to renting acreages in the area. In addition to his own responsibilities, Harlan never failed to be conscience of his neighbors – always willing to help out by providing his own labor or providing the necessary equipment needed to help a neighbor during illness, accident or death of a family member. Harlan loved to hunt and fish and had great respect for wildlife. He enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota. Harlan died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital after a brief bout with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Minnie Hersey; two brothers, Glen and Henry and six sisters, Gladys Pruin, Lena Voy, Berniece Morgan, Mary Ann Tarrell, Alice Whitney and Lucille as an infant. He is survived by two sisters, Ethel Stopplemoor of Shell Rock Health Care Center and Dorothy Palmer of Grundy Center; numerous nieces and nephews in addition to great and great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Anthony Bradseth officiating. Vocalist Stan Thompson sang “Morning Has Broken” and “In The Garden.” Casketbearers were Red Schell, Dan Schell, Jim Whitney, Duane Whitney,Don Allspach and Dan Drysdale. Honorary Casketbearers Roy Hassman, Larry Atteberry, Iver Bloomfield and Ray Simon. Interment was in the Codner Family Cemetery, Sinclair, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Douglas Gerdes

Douglas Gerdes, 45, of Allison, Iowa, formerly of Parkersburg, passed away May 17, 2004 at the Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Missouri, due to a brain tumor. Doug was born September 18, 1958 at the Hampton Hospital to Robert and Darlene (Jungling) Gerdes. He graduated from the Dumont High School. Prior to his illness, he was employed by Walmart in Cedar Falls for 15 years. Doug was a life-long member of the Dumont Reformed Church. He is survived by his parents Robert and Darlene Gerdes of Allison, Iowa; brother Daryl and wife Cathy Gerdes of Liberty, Missouri; nephews Levi and Noah Gerdes of Liberty, Missouri; uncles and aunts Paul and Margaret Gerdes of Dumont, Iowa, Herman and Donna Gerdes of Stromsburg, Nebraska, Harry and Karen Jungling of Bristow, Iowa, and Eldon and Betty Siemers of Mason City, Iowa; as well as many cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Dirk and Stena Gerdes and John and Henrietta Jungling. Doug was a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend, and will be missed greatly. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist Jim Siebrands accompanying soloist Stan Thompson. Pallbearers were Ron Fleshner, Keith Ubben, Duane Wubbena, Otto Tjaden, Harris Bettenga, Wendale Miller. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Klingenborg, Rod Radcliffe, Darwin Freese, Todd Lewis and Cliff Winkowitsch. Final resting place was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Bristow, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Eugene Katcher

A Memorial Interment Service for Paul Eugene Katcher, originally of Clarksville, will be held this Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Time for reflection will be held at the Amvets Hall in Clarksville following the service. Paul Eugene Katcher was born March 12, 1937 and died November 5, 2003 in Frankfurt Kentucky. A native of Clarksville, he was a retired conductor and brakeman for Illinois Central Railroad, and a former police chief in Jesup, Iowa. He had been working as a security officer with the Facilities Security for Kentucky State Police. He was the son of the late Paul Marion and Sybil Marie Burke Katcher. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Marie Katcher. Survivors include his wife, Rita Katcher of Frankfort, KY, two daughters, Angela Kay Douglas, Frankfort, KY and Susan Marie Traffanstedt, Weatherford, TX, a stepdaughter, Jill Marie Seedorff, Aliso Viejo, CA, a brother, LeRoy Katcher, Charles City, Iowa.


Ralph M. “Bud” Marsh

Funeral services for Ralph M. “Bud” Marsh, 86, of Apt. 6, Greene, were held Friday, May 28, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Ralph “Bud” Miles Marsh was born December 28, 1917 at home in Coldwater Township a son of D.C. Marsh and Pearl (Whitson) Marsh and died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. He spent his childhood on the family farm west of Greene. He graduated in 1934 from Greene High School. After graduation he started farming with his father. On March 6, 1938 he married Gertrude Stubbe at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Ralph sold real estate for 17 years with Miller & Marsh Real Estate. Ralph & Gertie retired and moved to Greene in the fall of 1963. They lived at their home on the river for 40 years before moving to Valley View Apartments. Ralph and Gertie had many happy times with their family. They enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona and their many fishing trips. Ralph is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gertrude of Greene, and their children: son Bruce Marsh of Grafton, daughter Jacqueline (Galen) Lindell of Greene, son Douglas (Susan) Marsh of Greene, daughter Margery (Roger) Weichers of Winona, MN; Ten grandchildren: Steve Marsh, Darren (Lori) Marsh, Kelli (Mike) Hemann, Ranee (Randy) Jacobus, Jeff (Cathy) Lindell, Tina (Kurt) Graven, Dan (Sara) Marsh, Amy (John) Teeple, David Weichers and Kim Weichers. Twenty great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Abbie, Cody, Samantha, Megan, Matthew, Kendal, Ryan, Erika, Emily, Eryn, Dalton, Taylor, Carson, Paige, Claire, Lauren, Maxwell, Elli and Anna; one sister Ruth Paplow of Greene; three sisters-in-law, Bobbie Davis of Greene, Emma Marsh of Clarksville, June Stubbe of Aredale and many nieces and nephews. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Marjorie, a granddaughter Corine Lindell and a daughter-in-law Joanne Marsh. Henry Christ Gerloff

Henry Christ Gerloff , age 86, of New Hartford, Iowa, was born the son of Lewis and Marie Flater Gerloff on April 18, 1918 near Holland in Colfax Township, Grundy County, Iowa. He attended Colfax #1 Country School through the 8th grade. Henry was united in marriage with Arvilla Venenga on December 10, 1941. The couple made their home on the farm near New Hartford. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the Army Air Force Military Police until 1945. Henry worked at the Dike Farm Coop for two years, Colpay Overhead Doors in Waterloo for 20 years, Midwest Turkey Hatchery, Dike, for 13 years and farmed most of his life. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. He belonged to the New Hartford American Legion Post #660. Henry died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George Gerloff and three sisters, Annie Hempen, Louise Fritzel and Millie Abbas. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Arville Gerloff, New Hartford, Iowa; three sons, LeeRoy (Mary) Gerloff; Henry Lee (Janice) Gerloff and Dennis (Bonnie) Gerloff, all of New Hartford, Iowa; one daughter Kay (Don) Harting, Cedar Falls, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Greg (Wendy) Gerloff, Perry (Denise) Gerloff; Brian (Leigh Anne) Gerloff; Brent (Lisa) Gerloff; Suzanne (Kirk) Neuroth; April Gerloff; Guy Gerloff, Tessa Gerloff, Sam Gerloff; Travis Harting, Tony Harting and Taylor Harting; and ten great-grandchildren, Shawn and Austin Gerloff, Blake and Erin Gerloff; Josh and Alayna Gerloff; Scott Gerloff; Connor and Malea Neuroth; Jaxon Gerloff and three step-grandchildren, Heath, Nicole and Matt Wilken. Organist was Michelle Mahadevan. Vocalist Bonnie Gerloff sang “In The Garden.” A duet of April Gerloff and Tessa Gerloff sang “God Be With You Until We Meet Again.” Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Old Rugged Cross. Casketbearers were Greg Gerloff, Travis Harting, Harlan Hempen, Brian Gerloff, Guy Gerloff and Gene Venenga. Honorary Caskebearers were Perry Gerloff, Tony Harting, Brent Gerloff, Sam Gerloff and Taylor Harting. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, with full military rites by New Hartford American Legion Post #660. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Agnes J. Roloff

Agnes J. Roloff, 92 years old, of Independence, Iowa, formerly of Quasqueton, Iowa, died on Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa, following a short illness. She was born on May 10, 1912, in Allison, Iowa, the daughter of Althius and Johanna (Boelman) Reents. She attended school in Allison, Dumont, and Waterloo, Iowa. On July 2, 1932, she and Wilford John Roloff were married in Galena, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Roloff was a member of the Quasqueton Union Church in Quasqueton, Iowa. Mrs. Roloff is survived by 1 son, LeRoy (Carol) Roloff of Hudson, Iowa, 1 step son, John (Betty) Roloff of Minneapolis, Minnesota, 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 9 step great grandchildren, 4 great great grandsons, and 8 step great great grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 sisters, Jenny Harvey of Independence, Iowa, and Olive Crandall of San Jacinto, California, and 1 son-in-law, Willis Chesmore of Quasqueton, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 daughter, Velda Chesmore, 4 brothers, 1 half brother, 1 sister, and 1 half sister. Funeral Services were held at on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the Quasqueton Union Church in Quasqueton, Iowa, with Pastor Deborah Mann officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Dan Williams, organist. Casket Bearers were Carol and Marshal Chesmore, Debbie and Jerry Holt, Beckie and Dewey Petersen, and LaVelle and Marvin Hillman. Burial was at the Garden of Memories in Waterloo, Iowa. White Funeral Home of Independence was in charge of arrangements.


Donald R. Wilken

Donald R. Wilken, age 75, of Dumont, Iowa, was born February 28, 1929, the son of Arnold and Bertha Wedeking Wilken in rural Clarksville, Butler County, Iowa. He graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1947. Don began working at Busching Grocery Store in Clarksville after high school Don was united in marriage with Gertrude Willson on September 26, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Waverly, Iowa. The couple made their home in Clarksville and Don purchased the grocery store where he worked. They operated the Wilken Grocery Store in Clarksville until 1973 when it closed. Don then worked at the Jack and Jill Grocery Store in Waverly. Don and Gert moved to Dumont in 1980. He was the Meat Manager for BW Grocery Store in Dumont until he retired in 1994, but still helped out at various businesses in Dumont. Don enjoyed gardening when he wasn’t working and was known for his green thumb. Don was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. He was Church Treasurer for nine years and currently served as Financial Secretary. He was a past member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. There he was involved with the Men’s Brotherhood and was a church delegate at the Iowa Conference for the United Church of Christ for two years. Don was very active in both the Clarksville and Dumont communities. He was a Lions Club member in Clarksville and Dumont. Don was a member of the Clarksville I.O.O.F., was the President of the Clarksville Commercial Club 1955 thru 1956 and 1971 thru 1972, helped with Clarksville Community Fund Drive 1963 thru 1966, served on the Clarksville Ambulance 1972 thru 1977, and served on the Clarksville City Council 1972 thru 1978. He delivered meals for the Hawkeye Valley Area on Aging and provided transportation for senior citizens. He also served as County Treasurer from 2000 until present for that agency. Don died Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold and Bertha; a brother, Dale Wilken; and a brother-in-law, Marlin Klar. Don is survived by: his wife: Gertrude, Dumont, Iowa; a daughter, Beverly (Drake) Tarpley, St. Joseph, Missouri; a son, David (Shari) Wilken, Clarksville, Iowa; six grandchildren; one great grandson; a brother, Darrel (Doris) Wilken, Surprise, Arizona; and a sister Shirley Klar, Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Clarksville, Iowa. Officiating were Rev. David Walters and Rev. Terra Amundson who is pastor of New Hope United Methodist Church, Dumont, Iowa. Organist Sharon Leerhoff accompanied Congregational Hymns ”O Jesus, I Have Promised,” (Don’s Confirmation Hymn), ”Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Abide With Me”. Casketbearers were Tim Booher, Heath Wilken, Matt Wilken, Kevin Klar, Kendall Klar and Jeff Wilken. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Mabel Minnie Wilder

Mabel Minnie Wilder, age 85, of Glendale, Arizona and formerly of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Martin and Minnie Schmidt Reinicke on February 23, 1919, at the family home near Parkersburg, Iowa. Mabel grew up attending the Salem Lutheran Church near Parkersburg. She attended school in Parkersburg and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1936 On December 25, 1940, Mabel was united in marriage to DeVer Wilder in the Bethel Lutheran parsonage in Parkersburg, Iowa. They farmed near Greene until moving to Clarksville, Iowa, in 1943. Mabel was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville until moving to Arizona twelve years ago. Mabel enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking, and playing cards with her family and friends. Mabel died February 26, 2004, at Hospice Home of Peoria, Arizona of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, DeVer Wilder; her parents; two brothers, Raymond and Marlyn Reinicke and one sister, Viola Cordes. She is survived by two sons, Roger and his wife, Chris of Bryons Road, Maryland and Gary and his wife, Carole, of Peoria, Arizona; one daughter, Marlys and her husband Dana, Foster of Sandy, Utah; grandchildren Rodger and Donna Wilder, Fredrick, Maryland; Robert and Tracey Wilder, Fredrick, Maryland; Janet and Larry Remsburg, Fredrick, Maryland; Alesha Wilder, Nashville, Tennessee; Daniel and Amy Foster of Litchfield Park, Arizona; and Rebecca and John Tank of Springfield, Missouri as well as great grandchildren, Lauren Wilder, Danielle and Lauren Wilder, Christine and Cassandra Remsburg, Johnathan, Nattalie and Daniel Tank and Zachary Foster and one sister, Bernice Johnson, Greene, Iowa. A Committal Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Lynwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service was held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Church, both in Clarksville, Iowa. Officiating was Pastor David Nelson. Organist was Lois Roose. Vocalist was Mabel’s granddaughter, Rebecca Tank who sang “In The Garden.” Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace” and “Bless Be the Tie That Binds.” Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Ida M. Wells

Ida M. Wells, 76, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, June 2 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home. She was born May 16, 1928 in Clarksville, daughter of Frank E. and Della Peck Pitts. She married James R. Wells on July 3, 1948 in Bentonville, Arkansas. Survivors include her husband, 3 daughters, Kathryn (Roy) Stevens, Diane (Don) Gallagher all of Waterloo and Caroline (Greg Goforth) Wells of Bella Vista, AR; 5 grandchildren, James Hart, Thomas (Natalie Schoepske) Hart, Brian Warren, Randy Wells and Kathryn Hilton and 2 great-grandsons, Thomas Hart, Jr. and Lucas Hart and a brother, Harold (Avis) Clark. She was preceded in death by a half-brother, George Clark and a half-sister, Genevieve Lehman. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A memorial fund will be established at a later date. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Lucille Elizabeth Cassmann

Lucille Elizabeth Cassmann, 86, of Hampton died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at North Iowa Mercy Center in Mason City, Iowa. Lucille was born on May 4, 1918 in Dumont to Frank and Lela (Truax) Eisentrager. She graduated from Dumont High School in 1936. Lucille was married to Leroy Cassmann on April 22, 1942 at Aredale. They moved to Albert City where they lived until 1944, when Leroy entered the Navy and she moved back to Dumont. In 1946 they moved to their present home in Hampton. Lucille was a homemaker and worked at Harrison Variety in Hampton until her retirement. She was a member of Hampton’s First Congregational United Church of Christ. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, crafts, camping, fishing and playing cards. Living family members include her husband, Leroy Cassmann, Hampton; son Dennis and wife Linda Cassmann, Clear Lake; daughter JoAnn and husband Don Harmelink, Perry; grandchildren: Jim and Tara Cassmann, Mankato MN; Teri and Tony Stewart, Overland Park, KS; Kathy Harmelink, Charles City; two brothers: Dale and wife Mary Ann Eisentrager, Bristow and Richard and wife Esther Eisentrager, Dumont; four sisters: Dorothy Bruns, Dumont, Phyllis and husband Harold Harms, Bristow, Beverly and husband Henry Folken, Parkersburg, Sharon and husband Nathan Eilers, Hampton; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Melanie Cassmann, brother Earl Eisentrager, and half-brother Glenn Eisentrager. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton, Iowa with Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Ann Bailey accompanying the congregational singing. Ushers were LaVern Muller and Les Craighton. Pallbearers were Keith Harms, Kevin Eilers, David Cassmann, LaVern Kluiter, Galen Eisentrager and Frank Eisentrager. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Alice Marie Santi

Alice Marie Santi, age 90, of Kesley, formerly of Slater, Iowa, was born the daughter of Nathan and Marie Etheridge Powell on May 6, 1914 in Philidia, Iowa, near Madrid. She graduated from Madrid High School and then attended Drake College for a normal training degree. Alice taught country school until she married. Alice was united in marriage with Dominick Santi on November 28, 1946 at the Congregational Church in Madrid. The couple made their home on a farm east of Madrid, north of Polk City. Alice was a member of Salem United Church of Christ where she was active in the church circle and the quilting ladies. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years. Alice enjoyed reading, baking pies, cooking, gardening, quilting, playing bingo, dancing during the big band era, watching TV and eating chocolate She especially loved the times she spent with the grandchildren. Alice died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband Dominick; her parents; four brothers, William, Elmer, Nathan, and Orville Powell. She is survived by one son, John (Ann) Santi of Lynn Haven, Florida; one daughter Nina (Terry) Schmitz of Kesley, Iowa; six grandchildren, Seana Wilcken, Brenda McIlwain, Jolene Muller, Lisa Schmitz, Lyle Schmitz, and Teresa Schmitz; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha McIlwain, Dominick and Maggy Muller. Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Salem United Church of Church, Alleman, Iowa with Rev. Barbra Bullock officiating. Organist Mary Phelps accompanied Congregational Hymns “O God Our Help in Ages Past,” “Leaning On the Everlasting Arms” and ��Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Alice’s Grandchildren Brenda Santi McIlwain, Tom McIlwain, Jolene Santi Muller, Rich Muller, Lyle Schmitz, Teresa Schmitz, Seana Santi Wilcken and Steve Wilcken. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Madrid, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Linda S. Jacobs

Linda S. Jacobs, 85, of Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday afternoon, June 10, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, following a brief illness. She was born on October 22, 1918, near Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Dorette (Wedeking) Fenneman. She was baptized on January 19, 1919, and later confirmed on August 23, 1931, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Clarksville. She attended the Shady Dell country school near her home, and following her formal education she helped her family on the farm. On September 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to Herman C. Jacobs at 1st United Church of Christ-Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville. The couple then farmed near Clarksville for a time before moving to a farm west of Plainfield. In 1959 they moved to their farm east of Plainfield where Linda again assisted Herman in the day to day operation of the farm. After Herman’s death on March 19, 1994, she stayed on the farm with her grandson Mike Mueller who had taken over the farming operation. In May of 2002 Linda moved to her apartment in Waverly where she has since lived. Linda was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly, and was a former, longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Clarksville. She loved flowers and had raised and cared for many gardens over the years. She loved to visit, play cards, and spend time with her family, especially on the fishing trips to Canada. Linda always saw the bright side of life, had a great sense of humor, and loved to “giggle”, especially when around her sister, Hattie. Her family was her life, especially the grand and great grandchildren and she loved them all dearly. She enjoyed meeting new people and felt that there were no strangers just friends she had not met yet. She indeed came from great stock and has passed that on to her children, who in turn have passed that on as well. She is survived by her four daughters, Myrna (Eldean) Mueller of Plainfield, LeeAnna (Darrell) Stout of Waverly, Cordella (Irving) Bettenga of Waverly, Pamela (Steve) Hartzell of Cedar Falls; 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Frieda and Lucille Fenneman both of Clarksville, Gladys Jacobs of Shell Rock. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herman, two grandchildren, Roxanne Stout and Michael Mueller; one great granddaughter, Ashleigh; three brothers, George, Roy and Edmund Fenneman; one sister, Hattie Hartwig; one sister-in-law, Thelma Fenneman; and one brother-in-law, Lyle Hartwig. Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 am on Monday, June 14, 2004, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly, with burial in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. Friends may also call for one hour on Monday at the church prior to the services. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.

Lorraine Jones

Lorraine Jones, 86, of Hampton, Iowa passed away June 11, 2004 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. She was born on November 21, 1917 in Butler County, Iowa to Jake and Hattie (Knevel) Wessels. She grew up in the Bristow area and graduated from the Bristow High School. She was married to Chuck Jones at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Hampton on November 18, 1944. Lorraine started working in her younger years at the North West Bell Telephone Company at the switch board. Later in life she worked with her husband Chuck in the electrical business as well as being a homemaker. She attended the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton, Iowa. She enjoyed playing softball, racing go-carts and was a 4-H leader in her younger years. Lorraine enjoyed gardening, canning every fall for family, friends and neighbors, fishing, picnicking, camping and taking care of her cats. She especially loved to do activities with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. For years, Lorraine cut out and collected news clippings, recipes and family memorabilia, including her own personal thoughts about that particular event, to be passed on to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Charles Jones of Hampton; daughter Diana Harper of Hampton; son Russell Jones of Newton; granddaughter Tanya Harper Rowe and husband John of Mason City, grandson Tony Harper of Hampton, granddaughter Lori and husband Phil Jones of Texas, grandson Steven and wife Laura Jones of Newton, sister Marge and husband Don Schemmel of Cedar Falls, brother Jakie and wife Flavia Wessels of Dumont, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Don Wessels of Seattle, Washington. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. The songs were “Old Rugged Cross” and “In The Garden.” Pallbearers were Russell Morgan, John Rowe, Gaylen Weiland, Daryl Norman, Brent Hansen, Brian Hansen and Mike Arndorfer. Final resting place was in the Hampton Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Martha G. Berends

Martha G. Berends, 64, of Allison, Iowa passed away June 9, 2004 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly, Iowa. She was born on October 6, 1939 in Waterloo, Iowa to Frank and Martha (Sackett) Edgerton. Martha graduated from East High School in Waterloo. She worked as a cook in many different establishments. She was affiliated with the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Greene, Iowa. Martha enjoyed cooking and baking pies. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandkids. She also enjoyed collecting bears and bells. She is survived by three daughters: Kerry Burkett of Allison, Lorie Flickinger of Ames, and Melinda Berends of Mason City; son Mark and wife Jill Berends of Allison; brother Robert and wife Romona Edgerton of Waterloo; five sisters: Beverly and husband Maynard Ellison of Waterloo, Kay and husband James Zarifis of Temple City, California, Elizabeth Ebers of Vandalia, Missouri, Mary Cole of Waterloo and Faith Edgerton of Vandalia, Missouri; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, and one grandson. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 12, 2004 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Greene with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Barb Wagner accomp-anying the congregational singing and special music “I Believe” and “The Rose.” Pallbearers were Randy Zey, Kyle Zey, John Ellison, Robert Edgerton, John Edgerton and Don Anderson. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Herman E. Korte

Herman E. Korte, 89, of Dumont, Iowa passed away June 8, 2004 at the Dumont Care Center in Dumont, Iowa. Herman was born on June 1, 1915 in Hancock County, Iowa to Albert and Jennie (Harms) Korte. He attended Hancock County Schools. Herman was married to Christina Jessie Janssen on January 6, 1942 at Christina’s parent’s home. Herman was a farmer. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Bristow. He enjoyed going hunting for deer and heading up to his cabin in Minnesota every summer to fish. He also enjoyed traveling places with his wife Christina. He is survived by his wife Christina Korte of Dumont, two sisters: Francis Eilderts of Aplington and Marian Bietelman of Monticello, Illinois; two brothers: Elmer Korte of Boone and John and wife Vera Korte of Wyoming, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 11, 2004 at the First Reformed Church in Bristow with Pastor Scott Summers officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Rosella Mennen accompanying the congregational singing. Ushers were Harry Jungling and Kevin Snyder. Pallbearers were Mark Sawyer, Matt Sawyer, Mike Sawyer, Mark Hutchison, Travis Hutchison and Tory Hutchison. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Agnes Wamsley Pevoto

Thelma Agnes Wamsley Pevoto, age 80, passed away on June 16,2004. She was born on October 31,1923, in Hanmond, Indiana, to Sarah and Albert Poppen.

She was preceded in death by, Harry W. Wamsley, her first husband of 40 years and her brother Norbert Poppen. She is survived by her husband of eleven years, Cecil Pevoto, sons Keith and wife Janet Wamsley and Bruce and wife Nelda Wamsley and five grand- children, Eric and Reese Wamsley, Alex, Erika and Carlos Levezma; one sister Ellaine Mallet and one brother Lloyd Poppen. She was a 25 year resident of Sulphur/Carlyss; raised in Whiting, Indiana, and lived throughout the United States prior to settling in Sulphur.

Funeral Services where held Saturday June 19,2004, at I P.M. at Hixson- Sulphur Memorial in Louisiana. Committal Services 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa. Redman- Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville is in charge of local arrangements.


Gertrude Emma Esther "Trude Busse

Gertrude Emma Esther "Trude Busse, 90, of California and formerly of Waverly, Iowa, died Sunday evening, June 13, 2004, at the Oakhurst Community Living Center in Oakhurst, California of natura causes.

Trude was bon on October 13 1913, in Tripoli Iowa, the daughter of George and  Jesse (Holmes )Waterman. She was a care giver for many years, working as a nurses aide at the Waverly Hospital and Mason City Hospital as well as being a devoted mother. Trudj moved to California six years ago, and was a resident of the Oakhurst Community Living Center for 13 months.

Trude is survived by one daughter Karla Ashton of Mariposa, California three sons, Richard L. Bittner and his wife, Connie, of Tualatin, Oregon Charles L. Bittner and his wife, Jan of Shell Rock, Iowa, and Tony J. Busse and his wife, Cyndi of Mariposa, California; daughter-in-law, Sandy Bittner of Mariposa, California; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Trude was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Woodrow Bittner, her second husband, Richard F. Busse, a son, Louis W. Bittner; two brothers, LaVern (Bunnie) Waterman, Arnold (Coonie) Waterman and two sisters, Evelyn Renwick and Geneva Barker.

Graveside services were held on Friday, June 18, 2004 at 2:00 p.m..at the Allison Cemetery in Allison, Iowa, with Pastor Nathan N. Frazee officiating. Burial was also in the Allison Cemetery.

Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly was in charge services. Memorials may be directed to New Hope Community Church.


Mary Myers

Funeral services for Mary Myers, 96, of Rockford, were held Saturday June 12, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford, with Pastor Kennett. Kent officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Mary Halma was born June 20 1907, near Kesley, Hardin County, a daughter of Richard and Cora (Molek) Halma, and died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at her home in Rockford.

She received her education in the rural schools near Kesley and was united in marriage to Harold Myers on March 10, 1927, in Venice, California. Shortly after their marriage they moved to then home in Rockford, where she lived until her death. During World War II she helped out with roofing, painting, and wallpapering, which she continued to do until she was 70 years old. Her interests included gardening, growing flowers, crocheting, quilt making, and reading books.

She enjoyed playing cards, watching Lawrence Welk on Television, and going on the Sr. Citizen's Trips. Her greatest joy was her family. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Royal Neighbor's, Charter member of the Happy Birthday Club, U.M.W. Circle, and a member of the Rockford Senior Citizens.

Living family members include her loving children: Maxine Burke of Rockford, Cecil (Mary Ann) Myers of Greene; nine grandchildren: Steven Burke, Marilou (Don) Dormeier, Ervin (Jane) Burke, Michael (Mary) Burke, Ellen (Mike) Shea, Robert (Michelle) Burke, Kristi Mason, Cecil (Linda) Myers Jr., and David Myers; 15 great- grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband on October 17, 1955, her parents, two sisters: Helen (Merle) Knapp, Edna (Chris) Lindloff; and one brother Jake Halma, andherson-inlaw: Ed Burke.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Mary Myers Memorial Fund, designated for community projects, in care of the family. Arrangements were entrusted to Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene.


Calvin Yost

Calvin Yost, age 71, of Clarksvilll Iowa, was born the son of Ivan an Waiva Parks Yost on October 15,1932 in Butler County near Clarksville. He received his education from Clarksville Community Schools.

Cal enlisted in the United Statrs Navy May 27, 1953. He was a Machinist Mate in .the Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Hollis. Cal separated from the Navy in 1959 and returned to Clarksville. Calvin was united in marriage with Kathryn Smith on August 19, 1966, in Church of Christ in Clarksville.

 The couple lived in the Clarksville area after marriage. They eventually purchased the farm from Cal's parents where they currently live on the acreage.

Cal worked as a mechanic for Deike Farm Implement in Waverly for 21 years and then the Dumont Farm Implement until he retired in 1995. Cal was an avid outdoors sportsman and spent a lot of time hunting and fishing. He also likes playing billiards. Calvin always enjoyed the trips taken with his family.

 Calvin died Thursday, June 17,2004 at his home of complications of cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Waiva Yost and one brother, Edwin Yost. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kitty" Yost, Clarksville, Iowa, one son, Gary Jay Yost, Cedar Falls, Iowa, one sister Florence (Dan) Vance, and nieces an nephews.

Celebration of life services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 25, 2004, at Good Shepard's Chapel, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, Iowa with Rev. Kei1 Tomlinson officiating. Special Music is the hymn "In the Garden."

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
