Robert K. “Bob” Strickler

Funeral services for Robert K. “Bob” Strickler, 70, of Greene, formerly of Nora Springs, were held Saturday, January 31, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs with Pastor Jim Turner and Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Nora Springs with Military Rites Conducted by Nora Springs H.D.S. Post 449 American Legion. Robert Kenneth Strickler was born February 22, 1933 in Jenners Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania a son of George Alfred and Neva Virginia (Blair) Strickler, and died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit in Charles City. He received his education in the public schools in Boswell, Pennsylvania and entered the United States Air Force on August 30, 1950 where he served with the 802nd Motor Vehicle Squad. He was honorably discharged on September 5, 1953. On June 25, 1952 he was united in marriage to Joan Hartwell in Mason City. They made their home in Mason City and later in Nora Springs where they both were employed for Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. in Mason City. Bob retired in 1985 with 31 years service to the company. Bob and Joan moved to Greene in 1995. Bob was a member of the Nora Springs Volunteer Ambulance for eight years, CPR Instructor, and served on the Nora Springs City Council. He was Little League Coach, Boy Scout Leader, and a member of the Nora Springs H.D.S. Post 449 American Legion. Living family members include his loving wife of 52 years Joan of Greene, one daughter Connie (John) Stone of Ellenville, NY, two sons: Robert Jr. (Peggy) Strickler of Bristow, Jeff (Jan) Strickler of Waverly; five grandchildren Tonya and her husband Sam, Jessie, Jonna, Justin, and Jennifer; two great grandchildren: Sammy and Elena; and one brother George (June) Strickler of Pittsburgh, PA and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister: Violet Koba, two nephews: Carey and Glen. Edward J. Roskup

A Funeral Mass for Edward J. Roskup, 75, of Greene, was held Saturday, January 31, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Edward John Roskup was born August 23, 1928 at St. Ansgar, Iowa a son of Joseph and Pauline (Winter) Roskup, and died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at his home in Greene under the care of Hospice of North Iowa. He spent his early childhood in St. Ansgar until the family moved to Iowa City where he attended and graduated from St. Patrick’s School. He was first employed as a waiter at the University Hospital. On May 3, 1946 he was inducted into the United States Army where he served as a guard with Company L 15th Infantry in Berlin, Germany. He was honorably discharged on October 28, 1947. Following his discharge he was employed for the University Laundry. In 1950 he became employed as a bus driver for Iowa City Coach Company and later Iowa City Transit where he retired with over 39 years of service. He received many awards for safe driving and years of performance. He was also awarded for life saving by Gov. Robert D. Ray. On June 30, 1956 he was united in marriage to Twyla Marie Losee at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. They made their home at 1308 East Bloomington in Iowa City for 26 years before moving to Greene in September 1991. Ed and Twyla were faithful members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. Twyla died on October 23, 1998. Ed will be remembered as an avid walker, often times up to eight miles a day. He enjoyed fishing, eating ice cream, and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Teresa Marie Van Orden of Greene; one son: Edward Roskup Jr. and his wife Margaret of Wellman; three grandchildren: Edward J. “E.J.” Roskup III of Wellman, Billy Van Orden of Greene, and Karitta Rae Van Orden of Mason City; his twin sister: Rosemary Dahnke of Iowa City, and a brother: Jake (Phyllis) Roskup of Iowa City. Ed was also preceded in death by his parents, four sisters: Paulina Roskup, Katherine Davis, Pauline Coder, Mary Oesterricher, and three brothers: Andrew, Peter, and Joseph Roskup. Gary Lester Allen, Sr

Gary Lester Allen, Sr., 60, of Hampton, Iowa died January 31, 2004 at his home in Hampton, Iowa. from natural causes. On March 26, 1943, he was born the son of Lester and Ethel (Murphy) Allen in Aredale, Iowa. He received his education in The Dumont Community Schools. He was married to Donna Beers on July 6, 1971 in Livermore, Iowa. His church connection was LIGHTHOUSE Of Life Church. Survivors include his wife Donna Allen of Hampton; three step-daughters: Debra Allen of Hampton, Mary Ripley of Moline, IL, and Tammy Brass of Geneva, Iowa; three daughters: Robin Hargreaves of New Cloucester, ME, Brendi Frederickson of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Barbi Wise of Hampton, Iowa; two sons: Gary Allen, Jr. of Sheffield and Brad Allen of Hampton; father: Lester Allen of Dumont; two brothers: Dale and Dave Allen; two sisters: Gail Berends and Deone Havig; mother-in-law: Bernadene Allen; and eleven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at the LIGHTHOUSE Of Life Church in Hampton with Pastor Merle Wagner officiating.


 Anna Elizabeth Freese

Anna Elizabeth Freese, 92, of Hampton, formerly of Dumont, Iowa passed away January 27, 2004 at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. Anna was born on February 23, 1911 in Witty, Missouri to Daniel A. and Clara M. (Young) Hearn. Anna graduated from Bristow High School in Bristow, Iowa. She was married to Carl J. Freese on December 23, 1933 in Allison, Iowa. She was a homemaker and a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont where she was on the Methodist Ladies Aid. Anna loved to crochet, do word finds and go camping and traveling. She also enjoyed spending time with her family. She is survived by her three daughters: Louise and husband Norman Buseman of Dumont, Nadine and husband Allan Popinga of Hampton, and Carolyn and husband Dan Dodd of Iowa Falls; sister Erma McDonald of Hampton; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren and four great-great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, five sisters, one grandson and one great grandson. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the duet of Mr. & Mrs. Alvin Nolte. Ushers were Harold Reents and Harley Cuvelier. Pallbearers were Gene Storm, Kent Popinga, Korey Dodd, Curtis Popinga, Leslie Buseman and Ron Perentis. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Raymond D. Johnson

Funeral services for Raymond D. Johnson, 81, Greene were held Monday, February 9, 2004, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Raymond Duane Johnson was born December 28, 1922, in Dayton Township, Butler County, a son of Menno and Rixty (Ellingrod) Johnson and died Friday, February 6, 2004, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly. He received his education at Dayton Township No. 2 School and graduated from the Greene High School in 1940, as salutatorium of his class. He attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette for one year before coming back to Butler County to farm. On March 31, 1946, he was united in marriage to Cleo Corrine DeBower at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. They farmed East of Greene for 59 years before moving into Greene in 1995. Raymond was baptized May 28, 1930, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on November 12, 1989. He was also a member of the Butler County Cattleman’s Association, and served as secretary of the board of the Farmers Co-op Elevator. Raymond enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, crossword puzzles and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 58 years Cleo of Greene; two daughters: Janice (Kenneth) Offord of Rochester, MN, and Marilyn Myers of West Des Moines; one son: Warren Johnson of Maquoketa; seven grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; one sister: Doreen Schroeder and a sister-in-law Bernice Johnson both of Greene. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Veron Johnson. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Raymond D. Mildred LaVera Rieman

Mildred LaVera Rieman, age 67, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born April 8, 1936, the daughter of Herman and Elfrieda Oeschlager Meyne near Bremer in Bremer County, Iowa. She graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1954. Mildred worked at the Waverly newspaper after high school. Mildred was united in marriage with Alfred Rieman on September 11, 1955 in the Lutheran Church in Bremer, Iowa. Mildred was employed as a bookkeeper for Osweiler Hardware in Shell Rock. She farmed with her husband on various farms in the Shell Rock and Clarksville areas. Mildred was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, Iowa where she was active in the Ladies Aid. She loved her gardening and work on the farm. Mildred was always busy helping family and friends. Mildred died Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at her home, rural Clarksville, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Milius and her parents. Mildred is survived by her husband of 48 years, Alfred Rieman of Clarksville, Iowa; one daughter, Janet (Bruce) Johnston, Waverly, Iowa; two grandchildren, Mindy Johnston, Waverly, Iowa and Renee Milius, Minneapolis, Minnesota; one son-in-law, Steve Milius, Denver, Iowa; one brother, Harold (Mary) Meyne, Oelwein, Iowa and one sister, Josephine Petersen, Waterloo, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Service were at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 6, 2004, at Faith Lutheran Church, Shell Rock, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Steve McGinley, the organist was Millie Dieter and the Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace” and “In The Garden.” The Casketbearers were David Meyne, Joe Meyne, John Meyne, Calvin Rottink and Kenneth Forry. Interment was at Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville were in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Magdalen M. Naumann

Funeral Mass for Magdalen M. Naumann, 91, formerly of 2480 Highway 14, Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary Service. Visitation will continue Thursday at the Parish Hall at Roseville one hour before services. Magdalen Mary Naumann was born November 12, 1912 at rural Bruce, Wisconsin, a daughter of Peter and Dora (Wolf) Koenigsfeld, and died Monday, February 9, 2004, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. At the age of four her family moved to rural lonia where she attended Catholic school. The family later moved to rural Marble Rock where she completed her education at St. Mary’s School at Roseville. She was united in marriage to William Naumann on October 24, 1933, at Roseville. They farmed in the Roseville area for 37 years. Mr. Naumann died December 16, 1970. She moved to Greene in 1998 and attended St. Mary’s Parish there. Magdalen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Roseville, and a member of the Rosary Society and St. Theresa’s Circle. Living family members include four sons: Philip (Cheryl) Naumann of Coldwater, OH, Joseph (Maria) Naumann of Urbandale, Charles (Linda) Naumann of rural Greene, Paul (Muriel) Naumann of Iowa City; and one daughter: Janet Zimmer of Annapolis, MD; eight grandchildren: four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter in infancy, one son: Rev. John Naumann who died in 1993, and grandson Jeffrey Naumann who died in 2003; four brothers: Clarence, Dan, Lawrence, and John Koenigsfeld; and one sister: Sister Agnes Marie Koenigsfeld O.S.F. Jack D. Perry

Jack D. Perry , age 74, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Jack and Beulah (Bausman) Perry on May 8, 1929, in Buck Grove Township, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1947. He helped his father in his business, the Buck Grove Creamery until 1952 when he left for the Army during the Korean War. When he returned, after serving twenty-two months, he worked for Vernon Kyhl in his short line implement business located in Parkersburg for 11 years. On November 21, 1954, Jack was united in marriage with Jean Keding in Tripoli, Iowa. They made their home in Parkersburg, during this time they owned and operated FarMech Farm Fleet in Parkersburg from 1965 – 1980. For the next two years, Jack and Jean managed Beaver Meadows Country Club and in 1982 he owned and operated the Pronto Convenience Store. Jack was involved in many community projects and organizations. In 1986, Jean became ill and passed away in 1988 after battling a cancer illness. Jack loved his community. He was a school bus driver for 25 years. Jack served on the Parkersburg City Council for eight years, Parkersburg Chamber of Commerce President, Parkersburg Zoning Board, The Parkersburg Health Care Board and was a member of the Hope Reformed Church, where he served on the Church Consistory. In 1990, Jack was awarded Citizen of the Year. He was recognized in May 2003 for 50 years of membership to the Parkersburg American Legion. In 1993, Jack moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa. He married Beverly Keith on October 26, 1996, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. On Wednesday, February 4, 2004, Jack died at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of complications of kidney failure. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean; and his parents, Jack and Beulah Perry. Jack is survived by his wife, Bev of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two daughters, Joan (Mike) Trebon of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Jan (Jason) Lockett of Chandler, Arizona; three grandchildren, Tyler and Alex Keller and Tollen Lockett; one sister, Rosie (Paul) Mann of Marshalltown, Iowa; two step-daughters, Shelley (Tim) Keith, and Stacey (Barclay) Bartz; and one step-grandson, Ben Layne. Funeral Service were at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2004, at the Hope Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Neal Ooms, the Accompianist was Kathy Meyer, the Vocalists were LaVonne Johnson and sang “He Touched Me” and Wayne Jacobson sang “I Can Only Imagine” with played music “Unchained Melody,” “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” The Honorary Casketbearer was Ben Ehmen and the Casketbearers were Donovan Truax, Paul Schipper, Dennis Schipper, Don Bergman, Tyler Keller and Alex Keller. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa, with full Military Rites conducted by the Parkersburg American Legion Post #285. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg were in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Parkersburg American Legion or the Hope Reformed Church.


Helen W. Marsh

A Funeral Mass for Helen W. Marsh, 86, Greene, was held Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Helen Winifred Knapp was born March 19, 1917, in Bennezette Township, Butler County a daughter of Fred and Laura (Luhring) Knapp, and died Saturday, February 7, 2004, at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City while under Hospice care. She graduated from the Greene High School in 1935, and worked at Buchholz & Dralle Department Store until marrying Harry Willard Marsh in 1937. They farmed west of Greene for 40 years before retiring and moving into town in 1977. To this union were born four children, Bonita Jane (Roger) Staudt of Marble Rock, Roger Willard (Terri) Marsh of Greene, Brenda Jean (Daniel) Ballard of Greene, and Ronald Duane Marsh deceased 1971; ten grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren. She is also survive by her three sisters: Lucille (Jack) Smith of California, Gen Ott of Greene, Jane Caruth of Arizona, and one brother Donavon (Judy) Knapp of California. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Willard Marsh in 1980, parents, two brothers: Francis and Duane Knapp, one sister: Lorma Jasinski, and her granddaughter Jennifer Marsh in 1981.  Bernedena Koning

Bernedena Koning, age 81, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born July 24, 1922 in Little Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Christoffer and Tena Schmidt Koning. Her parents had immigrated from Holland in 1919. She attended school through the 8th grade in Little Rock, then the family moved to Estherville, Iowa where she graduated from high school in 1940. Bernedena joined the Marine Corp March 8, 1943 and had her Basic Training in Hunter College in New York. She was sent to Washington D.C. where she served during World War II until she was discharged September 26, 1945. She was one of the first female Marines to serve during the war. She reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. She had attended Dirkinson Secretarial School and was employed as a secretary at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo and Fish & Johnson Insurance. She loved her dogs which were her constant companions. Bernedena died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Minnie Perry. Bernedena is survived by her friends. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen officiating. Special music was “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Burial in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa with Military Rites by Clarksville AMVETS Post #30.


Harry H. Voigts

Harry H. Voigts, 89, of Phoenix, Arizona, died Thursday, December 11, 2003, at Sungrove Village Care Center, Peoria, Arizona. Harry was born on September 13, 1914, in Bristow, Iowa to William C. and Marie (Jakel) Voigts. He attended Brushy Mound School in Iowa. He married Maude Needham of Bristow, Iowa, on October 15, 1938. They farmed four years at Bristow before he, his wife and his parents moved to Phoenix, Arizona, December, 1942. He worked at Goodyear Aircraft and Company of Phoenix. He furthered his education at Mechanical School in Lorain, Ohio and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Harry then worked for Lee Redman Equipment Company at Phoenix, Arizona for thirty years. He retired in February, 1980. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives and friends in many states. Harry is survived by his wife Maude, of Phoenix, Arizona; two daughters: Pam Rider (Rick) of Payson, Arizona and Kathy Stilley (Jack) of Phoenix, Arizona; two granddaughters: Paula Brewster of Chandler, Arizona and Kimberly Carter (Clay) of Phoenix, Arizona and three great-grandsons: Tyler Brewster and Kyle and Travis Carter. He is also survived by a sister Louise Koopman of Kalamazoo, Michigan and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, a brother William (Bill) Voigts of Phoenix and a brother in infancy.

Tillie Johnson

 Tillie Johnson, age 86, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ben and Anna (DeVries) Boelman on May 25, 1917, rural Grundy County, Iowa. She received her education from a Grundy County country school. On January 18, 1939, Tillie Boelman was united in marriage with Fred Johnson at St. Peters United Church of Christ, Wellsburg, Iowa. They made their home and farmed north of Parkersburg and later near Holland, Iowa. They also farmed near the Wellsburg community. In 1948 they bought a farm south of Aplington, which remains the family farm. Tillie was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington, where she was active in the Women’s Guild. She loved cooking and helping out on the farm. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and canning. On Monday, February 9, 2004, Tillie died at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; her parents; two brothers, George and Folkert Boelman; and one sister, Helen Graham. Tillie is survived by three sons, Darrell (Merna) Johnson of Ackley, Dennis (Joan)Johnson of Waverly, Iowa and Kenneth (Dwanna) of Aplington, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben (Marg) Boelman, Jr. of Placentia, California, Robert (Hyla) Boelman of Aplington, Iowa; three sisters, Leona (Bill) Vigars of Eldora, Iowa; Lois (Darwyn) Lumley of Vista, California; and Pearl (Rev. Al) Kinrade of Prairie City, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2004 at the First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Vocalists Willie Aalderks and Randy Aalderks sang “Through It All” and “In The Garden.” Congregational Hymns were “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were Tim Johnson, Andy Johnson, Eric Johnson, Mike McCabe, Mark Sulentic, Gary Jarnagin, Darwin Van Horn, Mike Reyerson and Dan Goodman. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Jennie Boelman

 Jennie Boelman, age 91, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born March 1, 1912, the daughter of Chris and Janna Conrad Ridder south of Aplington in Butler County, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near her home Jennie was united in marriage with George Boelman on February 24, 1938 in the parsonage of First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa. The couple farmed near Aplington and Shell Rock in Butler County. She liked her chickens on the farm. Jennie was a homemaker and a member and First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. Jennie died February 11, 2004, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1966; her parents; one son, James in 1975; three brothers, Henry, Herman and Philip Ridder; four sisters, Tena Ridder, Ella Dreesman, Fannie Walters and Christina Ridder. Jennie is survived by one son, Dennis Boelman (Leane), Cedar Falls, Iowa; five grandchildren, Kim (Virgil)Larsen, Alexander, Iowa; Mia Boelman, Waterloo, Iowa; Nicole (Robbie) Onnen, Grundy Center, Iowa; John (Pam) Boelman, Everly, Iowa and Shane Boelman, Waterloo, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Melody, Cody, Jocilyn, Michael, Quentin, Kami and Christian; one brother, Chris ( Millie) Ridder, Aplington, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Elaine (David) Reents and their daughter Christy Reents; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 16, 2004 at First Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Ron Bartlett officiating. Organist was Jean Bass. Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art” “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Shane Boelman, David Reents, John Boelman, Vick Larsen, Douglas Boelman and Robbie Onnen. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Edmund S. Poppe

Edmund S. Poppe, 77, of Nashua passed away Tuesday morning, February 10, 2004 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City of complications of a stroke. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 14, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Nashua. Edmund S. Poppe was born June 21, 1926, son of Edmund A. and Wilhelmina Sievers Poppe. He attended the rural Keasling School and graduated from Nashua High School in 1943. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, and was currently a member of Cross Lutheran in Charles City. On February 12th, 1950, he was united in marriage to Alma Hemmerich of Greene at the Vilmar Lutheran Church. To this union was born seven children: Calvin, Sharon, Glen, Gary, Beverly, Joanne, and Roy Poppe. Ed started farming in 1947 northest of Nashua, and together with his wife, moved onto the farm east of Nashua in 1951. He owned a chopper and custom filled silos for the neighbors. He was a charter member of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, served on the FS board of directors in New Hampton, the Chickasaw County Cattlemen’s board of directors and the Chickasaw County Pork Porducers. He was a lifelong supporter of 4H, and a member of the Moose Lodge in Charles City. He retired from farming in 1988. Ed always loved to go to a dance. He met his wife at a dance, and they hosted dances for their 25th, 40th and 50th wedding anniversaries. In 1986 the couple moved to their current home on Chickasaw Street in Nashua. There he enjoyed giving pontoon boat rides and tending black raspberry bushes. Ed enjoyed his grandchildren, and he taught them all to go fishing. He is survived by his wife, Alma; four sons: Calvin (Nancy) Poppe of Ionia, Glen Poppe of Nashua, Gary (Rhonda) Poppe of Ionia and Roy (ayse) Poppe with the United States Air Force; three daughters: Sharon (Ken) Pinter of Mundelein, IL, Beverly (Jim) Haeflinger of Alta Vista, Joanne (Larry) Tupper of Ionia; two brothers: Wilbur (Yvonne) Poppe of Denton, TX and Harold (Audrey) Poppe of Decorah; five sisters: Caroline Menken of Greene, Lydia Dingfelder of Rochester, MN, Wilma (Garland) Morse of Decorah, Myrtle Poppe of Yacapia, CA and Melba (Dalton) Compton of Wichita, KS; one aunt, Leona Groen of Clarksville; 16 grandchildren: Allen, Neal & Craig Poppe; Angelyn & Dylana Pinter; Griffin, Kelsey & Abigail Poppe; Mindy, Brian, Jason & David Haeflinger; Jennifer, Stephanie, Michael & Katherine Tupper. Ed was precded in death by his parents and three brothers-in-law: George Ellis, George Menken and vincent Dingfelder. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua was in charge of arrangements.


Else Freidricke Hauswirth Ness

Else Freidricke Hauswirth Ness, 94, of Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday morning, February 14, 2004, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center of natural causes. Else was born on January 9, 1910, on a farm northeast of Artesian, Iowa, the daughter of Adolf and Anna Marie (Kelm) Laube. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Artesian. At the age of 8, she moved with her family to a farm northwest of Clarksville. Else attended country school, and after graduating from the 8th grade, was confirmed in the United Church of Christ in Clarksville. She then worked on the home farm and also helped neighbors. At the age of 15, she started working for the Marshall Canning Factory in Waverly, which she did for 5 years. On November 26, 1931, she was united in marriage to Orlo C. Hauswirth in the United Church of Christ in Clarksville. For the next 5 years, the couple farmed 5 miles north of Clarksville and in 1936 moved to a farm south of Greene. Orlo became ill and the couple was forced to have a farm sale and moved into Waverly in 1952. Orlo worked as a carpenter in the Waverly area, and Else helped him. She also worked as a domestic for a number of Waverly families. Orlo died on February 7, 1965. In 1969, Else was united in marriage to Clare L. Ness in Waverly. Clare died on April 2, 1975. Else has continued living in her home at 716 2nd Ave. S.W. for over fifty years until she became a resident of the Shell Rock Health Care Center on September 22, 2003. She was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly, and a former member of United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Else was an avid bowler. Else is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Herman (Bertha) Laube of Charles City, Iowa, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, sisters, Sophie Witte, Minnie Schmidt, Hattie Ohlendorf, and brothers, Robert Laube, William Laube, Paul Laube, Herman Laube and August Laube. Services will be held on Monday, February 16, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly, with Pastor Reuben J. Topp officiating. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to Peace United Church of Christ in both Waverly and Clarksville.
