Vernie Alberts

Funeral services for Vernie Leo Alberts, age 82 of Chester were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 7 at Chester United Methodist Church in Chester. The Rev. Robert Holdorf officiated. Interment was in the Chester Hill Cemetery. Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Vernie died Friday, September 3, 1999 at his home in Chester.

Vernie Leo Alberts was born September 25, 1916 on a farm near Lime Springs, the son of Jack Albert and Clara Ebel Albert. He attended school in Lime Springs.

On July 6, 1941 he was united in marriage to Edith Tibbals in Rochester, MN. They had six children. Vernie and Edith farmed in the Lime Springs and Chester area for 39 years until retiring from farming in 1980. Vernie was an avid gardener.

He is survived by his wife Edith of Chester, two sons: James of Fairbank, Tom of Dear Park, WI; four daughters: Nancy of Chester, Jeanie of Postville, Pam of Chester and Brenda of Riceville; 18 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Beth Samuelson of Hayfield, MN, and Evelyn Scheer of Grand Meadow, MN.

Vernie was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Lorraine, Lester and Jack Jr. and a sister, Betty Mae.


Adelia Von Helmst

Funeral services for Adelia A. Von Helmst of Lake City were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 6 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake City. The Rev. Scott Carmichael officiated. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery in Lake City. Mahn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Adelia, 95, died Friday, September 3, 1999 at the Lake City Nursing Home.

Adelia A. Von Helmst was born February 7, 1904 in Belvidere Township in Goodhue County, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Meerkens) Holst. She grew up in the Gillford Township area and worked for William Patton in Lake City.

On September 15, 1926 she married Rudolph Von Helmst in Mount Pleasant Township in Wabasha County. They farmed in the Lake City area until 1958 then retired and moved to Lake City. She worked at Pepin Heights Apple Orchard in Lake City. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church in Lake City; she was a member of the ladies aid, Rose Garden Club, Hill & Valley Birthday Club, Lake city senior citizen group.

Survivors include three daughters: Shirley Von Helmst of Lake City, Elaine Possehl of Red Wing, and Sharon Perry of Lime Springs; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Eleanor Carlson and Lydia Von Helmst both of Lake City, and one brother: Harold of Austin.

Adelia was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph December 6, 1988, four brothers, and one sister.


Hazel Kapka

Funeral services for Hazel Kapka were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 7 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. The Rev. Matthew Versemann officiated. Interment was in Lutheran Cemetery. Casket bearers were his nephews: Jim Womack, Jr., Ed Womack, Dale Slagle, George Theis, David Kapka, Charles Kapka and Lyle Kapka, Jr. Honorary bearers were grandsons: Craig Engelhardt, Ken Engelhardt and Randy Reicks. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel, age 80, died Saturday, September 4, 1999 at the North Iowa Hospice in Mason City.

Hazel I. Kapka was born May 30, 1919 in Elma, the daughter of Pearl and Mary Olive (Wilden) Womack. She was educated in Howard County schools.

On June 20, 1939 she married Kenneth E. Kapka in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville.

Hazel enjoyed growing flowers, tending the garden, cooking, taking care of her grandchildren, crossword puzzles and polka dancing.

She is survived by her three daughters: Cheryl Reicks of Thompson, Lois Engelhardt of Garrison and Jeanine Enderson of Thompson; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother: Jim Womack of Riceville; and two sisters: Gladys Grube of Charles City and Opal Polen of Montezuma.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth on April 28, 1984; her parents; four sisters: Lillian Marvin, Edna Slagle, Erma Albert and Joyce Weatherly; three brothers: Homer, George and Donald Womack; and one half brother, Mike Wilden.


Clarence Krueger

Funeral services for Clarence Krueger were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 10 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco. The Rev. Gary K. Lee and Intern Jennifer English officiated. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Johnie Vobr, Melvin Ott, Leonard Broghammer, Vincent Hornberger, Dale Arnold and Alvin Sommer. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence, 77, died Tuesday, September 7, 1999 at Regional Health Services of Howard County from cancer.

Clarence T. Kruger was born October 14, 1921 in Howard County, the son of Lydia (Kratz) and Daniel Krueger. Clarence’s mother died when he was about four years old. Later he and his brother Orville lived with their aunt and uncle, Minnie and Henry Klomp of St. Croix Falls, WI during their youthful years.

Clarence returned to Cresco and enlisted in the Army. He served in the Medical Detachment of the 424th Infantry during World War II and participated in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944. After an honorable discharge he worked for Howard County Road Maintenance.

On June 9, 1950 he married Evelyn Hoopman DeMille at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. In 1953 Clarence acquired a bulk milk route and continued this work until his retirement in 1983.

Clarence was baptzied and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the First Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of the unit 4561 Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as commander for four terms; 1955-56, 1976-77, and 1995-97. He served as an officer and board member of Comprehensive Systems. He enjoyed attending his annual army reunions and traveling.

Survivors include one son: Ronald of New Hampton; a sister Marjorie Billings of Nora Springs.

Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn in 1989, his parents, two sisters: Dorothy Kurdelmeier and Evelyn Nixon and a brother, Orville.


Michael Driscoll

Funeral services for Michael Driscoll were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 10 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Michael, 94, died Wednesday, September 8, 1999 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Michael Benedict Driscoll was born March 22, 1905 in Tipton, the son of Patrick and Mary (Harley) Driscoll. As a small boy, the family moved to Elma where Mike attended school.

On July 14, 1959 he married Agnes Hyke Hallman at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. They farmed north of Cresco until they retired and moved to town. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes of Cresco and several nieces and nephews by marriage.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers: Cornelius, Charles and Thomas.


Elva Luehr

Graveside services for Elva Luehr were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 11 at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. The Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elva, 99, died Wednesday, September 8, 1999 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Elva Loretta Luehr was born November 25, 1899 the daughter of Edward P. and Ida (Hilke) Webber. She attended the Cresco schools and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught in the primary grades in Postville, Cedar Rapids and Cresco.

On February 11, 1928 she married Dr. Frederick O. Luehr. They made their home in Cresco.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Historical Society, the 20th Century Club for over 60 years, the Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha Mangas of Rockford, IL; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Elva was preceded in death by her husband on November 5, 1977, one daughter, Mary in infancy, her parents, and three brothers: Charles, Willard and Harold Webber.


Dale Edwards

Funeral services for Dale Edwards were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 18 at the Cresco United Methodist Church in Cresco. The Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dale, 73, died Monday, September 13, 1999 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Dale Everett Edwards was born August 9, 1926 in Bernard, the son of Peter and Nettie (Heidic) Edwards. He grew up in the Maquoketa area. Dale served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II.

On September 25, 1964 he married Anna Mae Johnson McCloy in Savannah, IL. They moved to the Cresco area in 1976. Dale farmed for many years and also worked as a carpenter. He repaired violins as a hobby.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae of Lime Springs; five sons: William of Ames, Ronald of Byron, IL, David of Cecilia, KY, James of Auburn, NY, and John of Lime Springs; five daughters: Bonnie Hall of Story City, Joyce Reinhart and Martha Rains both of Cresco, Mary Carter of Valdosta, GA, and Carol Sahir of Graf; three step children: Wayne McCloy of Elma, WA, Jonathan McCloy of Moses Lake, WA, and Brent McCloy of Fayetteville, NC; 31 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Mona Goddard and Vera Hill both of Independence, MO.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Paul and a granddaughter.


Francis Schmauss

Funeral services for Francis Schmauss were held at 1:00 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. The Rev Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. His grandsons were pall bears: Bob Whitinger, Jr., Kevin Meyers, Mark Stokes, Darin Schmauss, Justin Schmauss, Todd Schmauss, Tom Schmauss and Brady Schmauss. Serving as honorary bearers were great grandchildren: Scott Truka, Trent Whitinger and Josh and Jason Bina. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Francis, 88, died Monday September 13, 1999 at St Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Francis Schmauss was born on January 7, 1911 in Wabasha, MN, the son of Fred and Jennie (Hall) Schmauss. He attended school in Wabasha and moved to Cresco.

On June 15, 1938, he married Bernice O’Brien at the Assumption Church in Cresco. They made their home on a farm in the Cresco and Lime Springs areas for 35 years. They retired and moved into Cresco in 1973.

Francis went hunting, trapping and fishing and followed high school wresting and football games. He was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice; four sons: Richard, John and Alan of Cresco, and Michael of Denver; three daughters: Connie of Cedar Rapids, Nancy of Rochester, MN, and Carol of Chatfield, MN; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two brothers: Arnold and Frederick both of Cresco, and one sister, Evaline Fulcher of Cresco.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; one son; Merlin, a brother; Lester, and two sisters: Harriet Hertges and Evangeline McIntire.


Violet Frieberg

Funeral services for Violet Frieberg of Riceville were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 17 at United Lutheran Church in Chester. The Rev. Rhea Evanson and Rev. Barbara Finley Shea officiated. Interment was in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Violet, 84, died Monday, September 13, 1999 at her daughter’s home in Ames.

Violet Ellen Anna Frieberg was born September 16, 1914 in Schley, the daughter of John and Mathilda Eberling Baethke. She attended local schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1933 and went on to complete her training to be a teacher.

On August 22, 1934 she married Clayton Frieberg in Cresco. She worked with her husband in farming and was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son: Harold of LeRoy, MN; three daughters: Dorothy (Dottie) Frieberg of Riceville, Hazel Harden of Rochester, MN and Julie Hurd of Ames; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother: Harlan Baethke of Cresco; and one sister: Hattie Lillegraven of Decorah.

Violet was preceded in death by her husband Clayton in 1971, a daughter Charlene in 1967, her parents, and one brother Ruben.


Irene Hofer

Funeral services for Irene Hofer of Clermont were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 17 at Elgin Lutheran Church in Elgin. The Rev. Albert Hock officiated. Interment was in Elgin Cemetery in Elgin. Honorary pall bearers were: Phil Hofer, Jim Hofer Dana Cutsforth, Gene Pisney, Francis Pisney and Raymond Pisney. Pall bearers were: Gregg Kleppe, Ben Hunsberger, Chris Wardlow and Ronnie Hofer. Leonard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Irene, 87, died Monday, September 13, 1999 at Veteran Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

Irene Violet Hofer was born January 15, 1912 in rural Clayton County, the daughter of Alva and Alvina (Kamaus) Shepperd. She was baptized in the Monona Evangelic Church and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. She attended Eno School at Luana and Clermont High School.

On December 20, 1933 she married Richard Leroy Hofer at the Evangelical Church parsonage in Elkader. They farmed near Farmersburg for eight years, and south of Elgin for 19 years. They moved to Clermont in 1961. Irene worked in food service for the Clermont, Elgin and Wadena School Districts. She and her husband were members of St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, East Clermont Lutheran Church, and Elgin Lutheran Church where she was last a member. Irene liked to travel and sew.

Survivors include her step-sisters: Virginia John, Vivian Cox, Verda Jean Shirley all of Washington state, Rose Gilbert and Lois Mower of Kalispell, MT, and Jessie Bronson of Condon, MT.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband in 1974, her parents, two sisters: Florence Clynch and Cora Pisney.


Melba Erickson

Memorial services for Melba Erickson of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 20 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. French & Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Melba, 76, died Tuesday, September 14, 1999 at the Bathell Eastern Star Nursing Home.


Rex Linda

A memorial service for Rex Linda of rural Riceville will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 9 at the Riceville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Edythe Hill will officiate. Interment will be at a later time in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Rex, 79, died Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center in Osage.

Rex Leon Linda was born August 4, 1920 on his family farm west of Riceville, the son of Leon and Dena (Erbe) Linda. Rex attended local schools.

On October 10, 1942 he married Lenore Minnie Labelle Hall in McIntire at the home of Lenore’s sister, Leah Gooder. They farmed the family farm.

Survivors include two sons: Alan of New York Mills, MN, and Mark of Waterloo; one daughter: Dianne Doss of Hereford, AZ; seven grandchildren; two sisters: Lois Caseberg of Waterloo and Ruth Ginder of Osage.

Rex was preceded in death by his wife on July 10, 1998, and his parents.


Winifred Bily

Funeral services for Winifred Bily were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 27 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Winifred, 92, died Wednesday, September 22, 1999 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Winifred Marie Bily was born October 22, 1906 in Schley, the daughter of Michael and Veronica (Novak) Barnes. As a young girl, the family moved from Schley to Cresco.

On June 21, 1927 she married Wenzel Edward “Jim” Bily at the Assumption Catholic Church. They made their home in Spillville until 1953 they moved to Cresco.

Winifred enjoyed being a homemaker, sewing, and refinishing furniture.

Survivors include one daughter, Madonna Burgess of Cresco; one granddaughter; three great-granddaughers; and three brothers and four sisters.

Winifred was preceded in death by her husband in 1966, her parents, one infant son, five brothers, and one sister.


Clara Swehla

Funeral services for Clara Swehla were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 25 at French & Balik Funeral Home in Decorah.

Clara, 91, died Wednesday, September 23, 1999 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah following a short illness.


Henrietta Mrachek

Funeral services for Henrietta Mrachek were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Schley. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Henrietta, 86, died Thursday, September 23, 1999 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Henrietta A. Mrachek was born September 20, 1913 in Winneshiek County, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Praska) Novak. She attended rural school.

On November 8, 1933 she married George T. Mrachek at the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. They made their home on a farm north of Schley until they retired and moved into Cresco.

Henrietta like to quilt, crochet, and all types of needlework. She also liked gardening and canning. She was a member of the Holy Cross Rosary Society, and later the Assumption Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include one son: Sylvester of Cresco; three granddaughters; one brother: James Novak of Protivin; and one sister: Sophie Bender of Burr Oak.

Henrietta was preceded in death by her husband on January 2, 1991; her parents; one brother: Julius Novak, and one sister: Gertrude Voyek.


Paul Barta

Funeral services for Paul Barta of Fort Atkinson were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 27 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. The Rev. Allen Schmitt officiated. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. French & Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Paul, 85, died Friday, September 24, 1999 at home following a long illness.

Survivors include his wife, Lauretta of Fort Atkinson; one son: Jim of Plainfield; two daughters: Pat Lynch of Lawler, and Norma Barta of North Liberty.


Vada Parks

Graveside services for Vada Parks of Macomb, IL were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 2 at the Good Hope Cemetery in Good Hope, IL. The Rev. Rick Kerr officiated. Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home in Macomb, IL was in charge of arrangements.

Vada, 85, died Friday, September 24, 1999 at OSF St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, IL.

Vada B. Parks was born August 6, 1914 in Marietta, IL, the daughter of Henry H. and Minnie (Evans) Walters.

On February 13, 1937 she married Harold F. Parks in Carthage, IL and he died July 9, 1983.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist church in Macomb, IL.

Survivors include one son: Richard of Cresco; two daughters: Charlene Dixon of Avon, IL and Martha Parks of Galesburg, IL; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren, and three sisters: Ada Schoier of Peoria, IL, Ilene Finley of Silvis, IL, and Evelyn Kelly of Macomb, IL.

Vada was preceded in death by one brother, Harvey Walters.


Nina Jagerson

Memorial services for Nina Jagerson of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 29 at the Fjelstul Funeral Home. The Rev. James Dale officiated. Inturnment was in Freeport Cemetery.

Nina, 87, died Monday, September 27, 1999 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a short illness.

Nina V. Jagerson was born May 2, 1912 on a farm near Postville, the daughter of Richard and Mabel (Harris) Folsom. She attended Postville School.

On February 14, 1930 she married Lester A. Jagerson Sr. They had the Texaco Station and Nina rented out the cabins and also had a lunch room.

Survivors include one stepson, Bud Jagerson of Postville; two granddaughters; three great-grandsons and one brother: Donald Folsom of Postville.

Nina was preceded in death by her husband, Lester on September 21, 1978; one son Richard A. Jagerson on April 25, 1979, her parents and an infant sister.


Helen Kapler

Funeral services for Helen Kapler of St. Charles were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Hauser officiated. Her body will be donated to the Mayo Foundation Anatomical Bequest Program. Hoff Funeral Homes’ was in charge of arrangements.

Helen, 89, died Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at Whitewater Healthcare Center in St. Charles.

Helen Kapler was born October 12, 1909 in Bellevue, the daughter of John and Laura (VanDanAcker) Joerger. She grew up in Bellevue and lived a short time in Brownsville, KS, Mapleton and Cresco.

On August 30, 1937 she married Gregory Kapler in Elma. They lived in the Cresco area all their married life. Gregory died in 1983. In September of 1988 she moved to St. Charles and has resided at Whitewater Healthcare Center since June 10, 1991.

Helen was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

Survivors include five sons: John of El Cajun, CA, Robert of Bakersfield, CA, William of Whitehall, MI, James of Urbandale, David of Rochester, MN; two daughters: Rose Smith of St. Charles and Margaret Tournier of Fairlawn, OH; 17 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four brothers: Wilfred of Bakersfield, CA, Vince of Simi Valley, CA, Donald of Estero, FL, Arthur of Cedar Rapids; and five sisters: Delberta Palmersheim of Elma, Irene Fisher of Rochester, MN, Dorothy Boom of Sauk Rapids, MN, Gladys Armstrong of Bakersfiled, CA, and Rita Kobliska of Baywood Park, CA.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter Mary McHale; four brothers: Walter, Vern, John, Joseph; and two sisters: Mary Murray and Margaret Connolly.


Arthur Petersen

Memorial services for Arthur Peterson of Stewartville, MN will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (today), September 29 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Stewartville. The Rev. Gregory Havel will officiate. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Stewartville. Griffin-Gray Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Arthur, 84, died Saturday, September 25, 1999 at his home.

Arthur R. Peterson was born May 22, 1915 in Stewartville. He grew up in Stewartville, attended Stewartville schools and at an early age he worked for an area farmer.

On October 19, 1946 he married Kathryn Kuihle in Stewartville. She died December 19, 1968. On June 13, 1975 he married Mildred Pecinovsky Sass.

Arthur was a longtime carpenter and cabinetmaker. He owned and operated Petersen’s Cabinet Shop in Stewartville for many years. He was Stewartville Police Chief for five years at the same time. He was later employed as a carpenter at Larson Construction, and was a foreman for 20 years. In 1973 he started Petersen Saw and Cutter Service, and operated it until December of 1997.

Arthur was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church where he served as a trustee. He was a member of the Stewartville Voluntary Fire Department for 27 years; was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission; lifetime member of the Stewartville Sportsman’s Club; Fraternal Order of Eagles of Rochester; and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, three stepsons: Mark Sass of Shorewood, MN, Owen Sass of Stewartville, MN and Ivan Sass of Minnetonka, MN, one stepdaughter: Julie Hayes of Stewartville; and 11 grandchildren.

Arthur was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.


Marjorie Whitmer

Services for Marjorie Whitmer of Ridgeway were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 29 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. Interment was at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie, 87, died Sunday, September 26, 1999 at the Cresco Care Center.

Marjorie and her husband Ray operated the Soda Grill prior to retirement.

She is survived by her husband, Ray and two sisters: Betty Fahler of Fresno, CA and Frances Sorenson of Hopkins, MN.


Dr. W. Heidenreich

Dr. William Heidenreich died at his home in Marquette on Thursday, September 30, 1999.

Dr. William Heidenreich was born in Pitttsburgh, PA the son of Ethel and William Heidenreich. He graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in 1951 and received his Doctor of Medicine from Yale in 1955. He took his residency at the University of Chicago from 1956-1959. He married Patricia Mawer of Oakville, Ontario, Canada in 1958.

Dr. Heidenreich served two years in the U.S. Army in Panama and was certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1960 and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine in 1976. After returning to the United States from Panama, he spent a year at West Haven, CT Veterans Memorial Hospital. The couple then moved to Dubuque where he practiced at Mercy, Finley and Xavier Hospitals. In 1978, they moved to Cedar City, UT where he practiced in the Cedar City Hospital. In 1981 they returned to Iowa where he practiced at the community hospitals of Waukon, Elkader, Cresco, West Union and New Hampton. He retired from medical practice in 1987.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; one son: Kenneth of Parowan, UT; one daughter: Pamela Heidenreich of Decorah; four grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Beech of Pittsburgh, PA.
