On Sept. 10, 1946 he married Helen Pearson at Concordia Lutheran Church of Burlington. He then enrolled in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Seminary in St. Louis, Mo. Part of his training at the seminary involved congregational service, and the service he chose was coaching. He took a basketball team of inner city boys to a national championship game and started football at the newly-established Lutheran High School in St. Louis. He earned his M.A. from Washington University and pursued other studies at the University of Minnesota.

From his teaching experience he saw the need for a book on sex education. His book, 'The Christian Parent Teaches About Sex,' was published by Augsburg Publishing House in 1966.

As a frequent speaker for church banquets, athletic banquets and graduation exercises, he traveled extensively through the Midwest. His inspiring enthusiasm and favorite stories were enjoyed by audiences and family as well. His strong faith led him as he taught Bible class, served Good Shepherd Lutheran Church as President and on the Board of Trustees.
