He was employed as a hired hand at Trettin Farms in Rockford, loved spending leisure time near Carol's quarter horses and enjoyed attending rodeos, where he especially favored watching the bull riding competitions. For the past few years, Steve's dog, "Tater," was a special companion. The two were rarely seen without each other and shared many a chocolate and caramel turtle.

Steve relished any time spent with his family and friends. For the past several years, he worked part-time as a bartender at "The Shed" in Bassett, where he lovingly called Lorraine, the owner of the establishment, "Mom." Steve battled diabetes for many years and became a passionate supporter in raising funds and collecting donations for the American Diabetes Association. Those who knew Steve remember him as a person always willing to help anyone in anyway, having a great sense of humor and his practical jokes. Steve's family recall special and treasured moments with him including grilling food, working on his Ford truck, going fishing, wrestling and generally, any activities that included his children.

Steve will be sadly missed by his children; Trevor Wright of Leland, Courtney Boggess and Austin Boggess of New Hampton; his father, Roger Boggess and his wife, Carol Ver Helst of Nora Springs; his brothers, Bradley Boggess and his wife, Holly of Runnells and Troy Boggess of Clear Lake; step sister, Kathryn Ver Helst of Nora Springs; step brother, Donald Ver Helst of Hanford; grandmother, Mildred Boggess of Charles City, special "grandpa," Joe Sloniker of Milo, Mo., and his former wife and very special friend, Jackie Boggess of New Hampton. Dorothy Kellogg

Dorothy Kellogg, 48, of 608 2nd Ave., Charles City, died early Saturday morning June 21, 2003 at St. Maryâs Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after years of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Officiating will be the Rev. Mike McAbee and Dr. Anthony Slinger. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday morning.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Dorothy Kellogg Memorial Fund.

Dorothy was born on April 6, 1955 the daughter of Marvin and Thelma (Taylor) Kellogg in Charles City. She attended Charles City Community Schools, graduating in the class of 1973. She worked in the CCHS Principals office during her senior year and continued there several years after graduation. Dorothy then worked at Ray's Pizza Factory, until deciding that was not her calling. Her caring heart drew her to nursing. She attended NIACC and received her LPN. After working several years, the desire to be a 'real' nurse called her back to the classroom, this time at Hawkeye Institute of Technology, class of 1985. She worked at Floyd County Memorial Hospital until she moved to Des Moines, where she worked as a temp. nurse, and later at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Dorothy was there until health problems forced her to quit work. She returned to Charles City to be closer to her family.

Family was everything to Dorothy. She loved children, maybe because she was a kid at heart, and could meet them on any level. She beamed over the birth of each new niece and nephew, and was proud to be the Godmother of several. She even was a Lamaze coach for at least one. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and great aunt, and a compassionate and dedicated nurse. She had a rowdy sense of humor, and was the life of many a party. Her talents were many, and varied like cake decorating, quilting, sewing, etc., and she spent many hours on her computer. She was an assistant Girl Scout Leader to her youngest niecesâ troop, until her health gave out. There was never a dog Dorothy didn't love, or any other animal for that matter. But anyone who knew her could only use one word to describe her -- survivor. Through years of countless surgeries, feeding tubes, and medication, she fought for every gain she made. It sometimes hardened her exterior, but never her heart.

Those who are most thankful for having shared in her life include her parents, Marvin and Thelma Kellogg, Charles City; sisters, Luella Kellogg, Charles City; Judy (James) Hunn, Banning, Calif.; Sharon (Dean) Bormann, Ionia; brothers, Richard (Linda) Kellogg, Ft. Dodge; and Randy (Barb) Kellogg, New Hampton; nieces Jennifer (Mike) Watkins, Anderson, Calif.; Jacqueline (Teddy) Miranda, Carlsbad, Calif.; Heather (Brian) Tank, New Hampton; Cassandra Bormann, Ionia; nephews, Brian (Cris) Kellogg, Bellevue; Brad (Stacy) Kellogg, Floyd; Greg (Kristen) Kellogg, Ft. Dodge; Matt Kellogg, New Hampton; and Garrett Bormann, Ionia; Great nieces, Taylor and Kaitlin Kellogg, Bellevue; Payton Lensing, Floyd; Gabrielle and Mikaela Kellogg, Ft. Dodge; Selena Miranda, Carlsbad, Calif.; Courtney and Brittany Watkins, Anderson, Calif.; Ashlynn Tank, New Hampton; Great nephews, Teddy Miranda III, Carlsbad, Calif.; Pierce Lensing, Floyd. Also left to mourn her passing, is her oldest and dearest friend from grade school, Deb Thoe and her son Joe, Bricelyn, Minn.; and her best friend in life, her dog Odie; and many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.

Ms. Kellogg was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, LuVerne and Luella Kellogg, maternal grandparents, Emil and Dorothy Taylor, several aunts, and uncles, and her dogs, Doogie Schnauzer, M.D. (Mad Dog), and Ozzie in December 2001.

Cleo Henrietta Bertha (Rieken) Gesell was born April 17, 1913, the daughter of Bill and Dora (Kruger) Rieken on their farm seven miles south of Riceville. As the oldest of three girls, she grew up hunting, fishing, trapping, and helping her dad work on the farm. She was united in marriage to Ray Gesell on Feb. 28, 1937. They farmed in the northwest section of Chickasaw County until Ray's death in 1970. Cleo moved to Elma in 1981. She made many friends working as a cook at the 11th Street Chatauqua in Charles City. After having trouble falling, she lived with her daughter and family in rural Charles City from the summer of 2000 until she broke her hip in the December of 2002. Her subsequent care at the Colonial Manor in Elma was comforted by the wonderful staff and her visiting friends and relatives. After a short diagnostic stay at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton, she was brought home to her daughter's family. A week of care supported by Hospice saw Cleo peacefully breathe her last as God took her spirit into his loving arms.

Cleo valued learning, telling her daughters to get their education under their belts before they got interested in boys! She exemplified her values by always reading and trying new interests. The piano she learned to play on was bought with the muskrat she trapped. She raised exotic geese and ducks, roses, and violets. She took on the challenge of learning to bake and can with such expertise that she won ribbons at the Cattle Congress and State Fair. Her most prestigious awards were winning the Sweepstakes (baked the best white, whole wheat, and rye bread) in the breads division at State in '61 and '62. Wedding cakes for relatives and friends are some of their special memories. She loved wedding photography. She was a member of the Deerfield Chicks, a women's club she nicknamed the "Slick Chicks." Her long-time involvement in the Ladies Aid of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elma enabled her to share her quilts with Lutheran World Relief. She belonged to the 50-mile swimming club at the Charles City YMCA and adored sharing her love of swimming with the school kids who would come from Elma to learn at the Y. She believed in making as much use as she could of what God had given her.

She will be sadly missed by daughter Mary (Gene) Schrandt; grandson Bill Schrandt of rural Charles City; two granddaughters: Julie (Todd) Van Aken, great-grandchildren Nikolas, Katelen, Brandon, and Cody Van Aken of Dover, N.H., and Nancy Ruksznis, also of Dover, N.H.; and son-in-law Richard Ruksznis of Arlington, Va.

Cleo was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughters Judy (Gesell) Ruksznis, Sandy Gesell, and stillboorn Susan Gesell; and two sisters Neva (Rieken Buchholtz and Opal Rieken.
