Ernest "Bud: Monroe

Ernest "Bud: Monroe, 71, a resident of 214 Cedar Circle, Charles City, died Thurs., Jan. 30, 2003, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Memorial services for Bud Monroe will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church in Charles City. Rev. Gale Richards, pastor of the Colwell United Church of Christ, will officiate. Private graveside services will be held later at Riverside Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

A gathering of family and friends will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home and Tuesday an hour prior to the services at the church.

Ernest "Bud" David Monroe was born Jan. 17, 1932 at Charles City, the son of Ernest R. and Myrtle (Exline) Monroe. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1950. Bud served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On Aug. 4, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilee Stanton at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

During his career Bud worked at the Oliver and White Farm Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 1992. Bud was a member of the First Congregational Church, Local 1315 of the United Auto Workers, Elks Lodge, Floyd County Historical Society, and the American Legion. Never to be forgotten will be Bud's fervor as a Hawkeye fan, the love and care for his family as seen in his participation in his children's activities and desire to spend time with them as well as his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his willingness to travel and his enjoyment at playing cards.

Living family members include his wife, Marilee of Charles City, two daughters, Julie (Bill) Fee of Cedar Falls, and Malinda (Wes) Quinn of Pittsboro, NC; two sons, Mitchell (Anne) Monroe of Oak Harbor, WA, and Mark Monroe of Sacramento, CA; seven grandchildren, Michelle Evans, Christina Kroll, Steven Monroe, Ben, Nick and Andy Fee, and Elizabeth Ann Quinn; and two great grandchildren, Kameron Burns and Kimberly Evans.

His parents, a grandson, Monroe Quinn, and a sister, Shirley Moses, preceded him in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the First Congregational Church.

LaVon Audry Schultz

ROCKFORD--LaVon Audry Schultz, 76 of 1849 Red Ball Rd. Rockford died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wed., Feb. 5, 2003 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE, Mason City. Officiating will be Pastor John Bailey assisted by LaVon's grandson Pastor John Stonecypher of the Church of God, Mason City. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Clifford Brown

Clifford Brown, 89, a resident of 1100 Hildreth Street, Charles City, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Services to celebrate the life of Clifford Brown will be held at 2 p.m. Wed., at Bethany Alliance Church. The Rev. Kent Sovine, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church an hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Clifford Anson Brown was born October 12, 1913, in Humboldt, the fourth child of Wesley and Cora (Hill) Brown. He grew up and attended school in the Orchard area, and worked as a farm hand. On April 23, 1932, he was united in marriage to Merna Ritter. Three children, Betty, Keith, and Garry were born to this union. Clifford lived and worked in the Mitchell and Floyd Counties all his life, working as a farm hand in his early years, then as a mechanic, carpenter and retiring as an electrician for Salsbury Laboratories. In his years after retirement he received great pleasure working with his hobby of repairing clocks. Clifford was a long time member of Bethany Alliance Church where in years past he served in many positions in the church. He loved eating his evening meal with his close friend Jean at the Back Door Restaurant where he was lovingly called "Wildman".

Living family members include his daughter, Betty (David) Holtz of Charles City; a son, Garry (Carol) Brown of Charles City; grandchildren, Deb and Bob Hocking, Laura and Jonathan Jones, Gina and Scott Phearman, Angie and Craig Sinnwell, Kelly and John Powell, Shawna and Kevin Davis; great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Allison, and Emily Hocking, Ellyn, Alex and Anna Phearman, Dalton and Jadyn Schutjer, Elliott Sinnwell, Brooke and Louis Powell, and Orion and Alexis Davis; close friend Jean Fisher; and life long friend and first cousin Howard Barrett.

His parents, wife, Merna in May of 1995, a son Keith in 1942, a son-in-law Dale Kinter in 1993, two sisters, Laura Gaines and Lola Bird, a brother Charles Brown, and his very special mother and father-in-law, Earl and Hortence Ritter preceded him in death.

Paul W. Gronbach, Sr.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Paul W. Gronbach, Sr., 69, formerly of Charles City, died Jan. 16, 2003, in Jacksonville, Fla., due to chronic lung disease. Memorial services for him were held Jan.19, 2003 in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at Jacksonville.

Paul is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bobbi, and eight children; Paul and Denise Gronbach, Belmond; Dave and Bernie Gronbach, Pueblo, Colo.; Lori and Randy Lewis, Ft. Dodge; Russ and Kim Gronbach, Northwood, Ohio; Sue and Steve Spangler, Findlay, Ohio; Steve and Aengela Gronbach, Northwood, Ohio; Renae and Jay Stanford, Jerry City, Ohio; and Brian and Sandie Gronbach of Cartersville, Ga. There are 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Three sisters also survive; Shirley Larson of Waverly, Betty Sankey, Ft. Dodge and Adabelle Sheets, Perry.

Paul's parents, five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.


Marlys Mitchell

Marlys Mitchell, 64, a resident of 3193 210th Street, Charles City, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Marlys Mitchell will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thurs., at Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City. The Rev. Irving Sandberg, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday where there will be a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday an hour prior to the service at the church.

Marlys Marie Bucheister Mitchell was born Jan. 11, 1939, at Hanlontown, the daughter of Cecil and Pauline (Messier) Bucheister. She graduated from Rudd High School in 1957 and received her Associate Degree from Mason City Junior College.

On July 9, 1961, she was united in marriage to Jim Mitchell. They resided in the Charles City area and Marlys became an active volunteer in the community. She was a charter member of the Messiah Lutheran Church and had served in various capacities. Marlys was the past director of the Floyd County Volunteers for many. She was a volunteer at heart as seen in her participation with 4-H as an honorary member, leader, 4-H committee member, serving on the schoolboard, and was a member of the Farm Bureau Women, and Porkettes. Her special joy was the time she would spend with her family.

Living family members include her husband, Jim of Charles City; four children, Becky (Darwin) Becker of Charles City, Tim Mitchell of La Porte City, Jerry (Laura) Mitchell, and Richard Mitchell both of Charles City; grandchildren, Chris and Christy, Joe, and Josh Becker, Tyler, Zach, Drew, and Sarah Mitchell; her mother, Pauline Bucheister of Charles City; and a brother, Raymond (Patt) Bucheister of Italy.

Her father preceded her in death.

Clyde Starkey

MASON CITY--Clyde Starkey, 64, a resident of 819 5th Street S.E., Mason City, formerly of Charles City, died Jan. 31, 2003, at Hospice of North Iowa Muse Norris Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Clyde Starkey will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Chris Prodhajfky, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.

Clyde Howard Starkey was born October 17, 1938, at Charles City, the son of Robert and Ruth (Dailey) Starkey. He attended the Charles City High School. On September 26, 1959, he was united in marriage to Donna Putney at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. During his working career Clyde worked for Lindaman Dairy, Sperry Transportation, Hydrotile Machinery Company, Takin Brothers, and H &W Motor Express from where he retired. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Teamsters, and the Moose Lodge. Clyde collected and assembled model tractors and trucks. The time spend with his family was very important to him. He also took special joy in harassing his neighbors, especially Walt.

Living family members include his wife, Donna of Mason City; two daughters, Debbra Starkey of Rapid City, SD, and Christina Starkey of Mason City; a son, Clyde (Tracy) Starkey, Jr. of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Pettigrew, Brandon Starkey, Dillon Starkey, Stevi Jean Starkey, Jared Starkey, Greg Johnson, Jeffery Zappa, and Samantha Zappa; and a great grandson, Thomas Lee Johnson, a sister, Jon Fredricks of Mason City; three brothers, Glenn (Kathy) Starkey of Mill Valley, Calf., Jerry (Joann) Starkey of Mason City, and Richard Starkey of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and a brother-in-law, Jack Ferch of Conrad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Connie Johnson, a son, Scott Starkey, a sister, Janice Ferch, a brother-in-law, Arnold Fredricks, and a nephew, Robert Ferch.

Donald "Buzz" Hunt

NASHUA--Donald H. "Buzz" Hunt, 78, of Nashua died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at his rural Nashua home.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2003 at the Nashua United Methodist Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Nashua. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Dale Cassmann

GREENE - Funeral services for Dale H. Cassmann, 71, of 415 North Second Street, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.today, Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Wednesday.

Dale Henry Cassmann was born Dec. 14, 1931 in Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Peter and Ella Mae Cassmann, and died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He received his education in the rural Coldwater Township Schools and later the Greene Public School. He was baptized on May 24,1942 and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene on April 3, 1949. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Mae Berk on Nov. 24, 1950 at St Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

As a young man he worked on the family farm and later for his uncle Peter Smoot in Allison. Dale worked for area farmers until he began working for the International Implement and later the John Deere Implement both in Greene until his retirement in 1987.

Dale's interests included collecting toy farm tractors, playing marbles and cards, but most of all he loved working in his garage doing woodworking and spending time with the grandchildren.

Living family members include his loving wife: Kathryn of Greene and their children: Dennis (Merlette) Cassmann of Bristow, Douglas Cassmann of Osage, Bruce (Janet) Cassmann of Rockford, Brenda (Gary) Geuther of Waverly; eight grandchildren: Michell, Cody, Melinda, and Christopher Cassmann of Rockford; Terence and Tiffany Cassmann of Bristow; Lisa and Jennifer Geuther of Waverly; two brothers: Gordon (Tillie) Cassmann of Aplington; Melvin Cassman and his friend Eileen Furstenburg of Clarksville; two sisters: Mable (Elvin) Rover of Greene; Eunice (Fred) Bolhuis of Aplington; his aunt and uncle Claus and Janet Johnson of Wycoff, Minn., aunt Ruth Sonksen of Grundy Center, aunt Alice Johnson of Allison, aunt Rosie Johnson of Waterloo, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Orville Whited, and several aunts and uncles.

Kelly Miller

BOULDER, COLO. - Kelly Miller, 43, a resident of Boulder, Colo., formerly of Charles City, son of Wayne and Juanita Miller, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Boulder, Colo.

Funeral services for Kelly Miller will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. David Werges, pastor at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Walter Ash, age 84, died early Thursday Feb. 6, 2003, in his home in Charles City after a long illness. Walter was formerly of West Union.

Kelly Miller

Kelly Miller, 43, a resident of Boulder, Col., formerly of Charles City, son of Wayne and Juaneta Miller, died Monday, February 3, 2003, at Boulder, Col.

Funeral services for Kelly Miller will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. David Werges, pastor at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Kelly Wayne Miller was born October 8, 1959, at Charles City, the son of Wayne and Juaneta (Tynan) Miller. He graduated from Longmont High School, Longmont, Col., and received his Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering from DeVry Institute, graduating with honors. Kelly worked at the Mini Scribe Corporation for several years and also as owner/manager of Sandy Point Inn in Boulder, Col. Among his interests were fishing, hunting, cooking, playing baseball, skiing, and watching football, especially the Denver Broncos. He was also known for his passion for Mustang cars.

Living family members include his parents, Wayne and Juaneta Miller of Boulder, Col.; and two sisters, Kim (Rick Smith) Miller of Cambria, Calif., and Tami (Sam) Gurule and family, Jaime, Kassi, and Brandi of Loveland, Col.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clayton and Amelia Miller, and maternal grandparents, Jim and Lettie Tynan.


Don Ritter

MASON CITY - Don N. Ritter, 73, of 1507 9th Street SW, left to join his two sons, Jimmy and Charlie, in Heaven on Thursday, February 06, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 8, 2003, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 Pennsylvania Avenue South, Mason City, with Reverend Keith Scott officiating. Interment will take place the same day at 12:30 pm at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street NE, Mason City and also for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Don N. Ritter Memorial Fund.

Don was born August 25, 1929 in Greene, Iowa, the youngest son of Sam and Pearl (Thompson) Ritter. He attended Greene Public Schools before going to work for the Jacob P. Decker plant in Mason City. Don was united in marriage to Francys Rex on August 29, 1951 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He entered into the United States Army in September 1951 and served overseas during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge in September 1953, he returned to work at Decker's while living in Marble Rock, Iowa. He moved with his wife to Nora Springs, Iowa for the next 16 years, before being transferred to the Armour Dial plant in Keokuk, Iowa. In 1978, they returned to Mason City, where Don worked at Armour until his semi-retirement in 1983. He then worked security for the General Foods plant and for Lewis Systems and Wells Fargo. Don retired completely in the late 1990's to enjoy fishing, playing pool, and taking care of his yard and flower gardens. He was a member of the Bass Club and a former member of the Mason City Eagles Club. Don's greatest joy was loving and sharing in the lives of his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Francys, of Mason City, three children, Donnella McGrew and her husband, John, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Mike Ritter and his wife, Doris, of Hamilton, IL, and WaNita Enabnit and her husband, Joel, of Mason City, a daughter-in-law, Shirley Kohler of Nora Springs, nine grandchildren, Jennifer Landgrebe and her husband, Steve, of Eddyville, Iowa, Angela Moore and her husband, Jeramie, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Vanessa McGrew of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Kevin and Steve Ritter, both of Hamilton, IL, Wesley Enabnit and Megan Navratil of Mason City, Wendy Enabnit of Mason City and Jason and Nick Ritter, both of Nora Springs, three great-grandchildren, Michael Moore, Tyler Landgrebe, and Bradyn Enabnit, and one sister, Nadine Wilson and her husband, George, of Winthrop, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Jimmy and Charles Ritter, two brothers, Wayne and Dale Ritter, and two sisters, June Shorts and Ella Mae Merrill.

Florence Barr

Florence May Barr, 91, of 801 Blunt Parkway, however, from 1967 until 1998, they also treasured their friends, the weather and their home in Tucson, Ariz, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 5, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date.

Florence May Barr was born March 14, 1911 in Bassett and is the daughter of Edith (Bell) and Ernest Meyer.

Florence attended school at the Bassett Country School and relished memories of her 8th grade graduation. Florence and Roland were married October 9, 1928, in Dumont. She took great pride in nurturing her family with love and her wonderful cooking ability. Her family claims that Florence created and served the best potato salad ever and also treated them to other favorites, such as fried chicken and a large variety of baked goods. When in season, fresh strawberries were picked from her patch to top off ice cream. When speaking of desserts, her family recalls that any kind of pickle accompanied any kind of dessert she ate. Some of Florence's interests, passions and leisure activities included preparing and eating picnic lunches with her family and friends, knitting and crocheting, holidays, researching vacation spots, eating hot peppers, reading and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She maintained a great sense of humor and a sharp memory throughout her life. The family has fond memories of their fishing vacations in Minnesota and time spent on the porch swing and gatherings in the back yard of their home.

Florence is survived by her four children, Roland "Ron" Barr and wife, Annette, of Mercedes, Texas; Dennis Barr and wife, Faye, of Cresco; Merrilinn Onstine and husband, Richard of Maple Valley, Wash.; and Richard Barr and wife, Kathy of Charles City. She will also be sadly missed by her two sisters, Wilma Huffman and husband, Bill, of Tucson, Ariz. and Bernice Larson Taglin of Charles City; her 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren. Many other relatives and friends survive her.

Preceding Florence in death is her husband Roland R. Barr; her parents; one grandson, David Barr; one sister, Ruth Hoffman; and her four brothers Wendell Meyer, Mark Meyer, John Meyer and Bernard Meyer.

The family requests memorial expressions to be directed to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Leone Belle Thorson

Leone Belle Thorson, 93, of Charles City, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at the Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Funeral services for Leone will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 South Main Street, Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Leone Belle Thorson, daughter of Charles Henry and Pearl (Roberts) Gray was born on a farm near Fredericksburg on March 7, 1909. Leone's family moved to northern Minnesota. When she was young she attended rural school near Pine City, Minnesota.

Leone returned to Iowa where she met and was married to Floyd Thomas. Floyd died in 1944. During the Second World War, she was employed at the Oliver Corporation, where she continued to work until the mid-1950's. Leone married Oliver Thorson in 1953. The couple and Oliver's dependent children moved to Urbandale and later to Albia before returning to Charles City to retire in 1975. They purchased at 507 8th Avenue, Charles City. Oliver died in 1984.

Leone was a member and attended St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and the church circles. Leone had a great love for her family, church and reading.

Survivors include her daughter, Helen (Glenn) Marrs of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; two step daughters, Jean Lent of Erie, Penn. and Kathy (Ron) Esper of Erie, Penn.; two sons, Charles (Arlene) Thomas of Charles City and Larry (Joan) Thorson of Cedar Rapids. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her 18 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, six sisters and four brothers.

Anna Tjaden

Anna Tjaden, 85, a former resident of 211 4th Avenue, Charles City, died Friday, February 07, 2003, at Port Charles Assisted Living in Charles City.

A funeral service for Anna Tjaden will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Gale Richards, pastor of the Colwell United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Anna Jelletta Tjaden was born December 16, 1917, at Woden, the daughter of Jelle and Anna (Hopkes) Tjaden. She graduated from the Woden High School, received her Associate Degree from the University of Dubuque and her Bachelor of Science Degree from Drake University and did graduate work at Drake University and the University of Minnesota. Anna began her teaching career at Shell Rock and then came to Charles City where she taught for 41 years, many of them at Washington School. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and Women's Fellowship, Church Women United, 4-H, Hawkeye Thimble Club, AAUW, and the Heritage Club. Anna was a charter member of the local Phi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa where she held local, state, regional, and international offices.

Living family members include two brothers, William Tjaden, Sr. of Clarksville, and George (Marian) Tjaden of Edina, MN; a sister, Margreete Tjaden of Garner; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, four brothers, and two sisters preceded her in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the First Congregational Church.


Walter Ash, Jr.

Walter Ash, Jr., age 84, died early Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in his home in Charles City, after a long illness. Walter was formerly of West Union.

Funeral Services will be today, Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union with Rev. Galen Smith officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery.

Walter was born August 9, 1918 at West Union. His parents were Walter and Lena (Appelman) Ash. He married Helen Miller on September 20, 1941 in Cresco. They worked at the Burlington Munitions Plant for one year and then moved to West Union and farmed in the area for 30 years. Following retirement, they moved to Charles City and Walter worked as a custodian in an apartment complex for 10 years and currently worked at the Wildwood Golf Course. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, dancing with Helen at the Moose, storytelling and poetry.

He is survived by his wife, Helen of Charles City; a son, Wally (Julie) Ash of Charles City; two daughters, Marlys (Jim) Gerleman of Charles City and Marcia (Ron) Frey of Bentonville, Ark.; one sister, Dorothy Medberry of Elgin; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Richard Knight of Floyd, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judy Knight; two brothers, Herbert and Alfred; three sisters, Eva Medberry, Marjorie Holtzman and Leta Barrett.

Richard "Dick" Bluhm

Richard "Dick" Bluhm, 51, a resident of 1901 Clark Street, Charles City, died Thursday, February 6, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

A funeral Mass for Dick Bluhm will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday where St. Catherine's Circle will recite the Rosary at 4:30 p.m., and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the mass.

Richard Carl Bluhm was born January 2, 1952, at Charles City, the son of Orland and Olga (Urness) Bluhm. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1970. In 1972 he was united in marriage to Linda Nolte. They later divorced. In 1975 he married Rita Kreeger. They later divorced. Dick was currently employed at All States Quality Foods and had also worked as a landscaper. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Dick also worked with goats and was a member of the Goat Breeders Association. He was an outdoorsman and a gardener. Dick also collected memorabilia of Richard Petty, NASCAR racing, as well as Roy Rogers, and was a fan of classic TV. He "took care" of his sisters, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Living family members include three children, Rebecca (Mark) O'Neill of Madison, WI, and Sarah Bluhm and Christopher (Monica) Bluhm both of Charles City; three sisters, Barb (Bill) Reams of Nashua, Nancy Vance of Charles City, and Jean (Dave) Dehtan of Farmington, NM; and three grandchildren, Logan O'Neill, Brittany Bluhm, and Jesse Bluhm.

His parents preceded him in death.

Florence May Barr

Florence May Barr, 91, the daughter of Edith (Bell) and Ernest Meyer, was born March 14, 1911, in Basset and died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Florence and her husband, Roland, lived at 801 Blunt Parkway in Charles City, however, from 1976 until 1998, they also treasured their friends, the weather and their home in Tucson, Ariz.

Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. The family greeted relatives and friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date. The family requests memorial expressions to be directed to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Florence attended school at the Bassett Country School and relished memories of her 8th grade graduation. Florence and Roland were married, Oct. 9, 1928, in Dumont. She took great pride in nurturing her family with love and her wonderful cooking ability. Her family claims that Florence created and served the best potato salad ever and also treated them to other favorites, such as fried chicken and a large variety of baked goods. When in season, fresh strawberries were picked from her patch to top off ice cream. When speaking of desserts, her family recalls that any kind of pickle accompanied any kind of dessert she ate. Some of Florence's interests, passions and leisure activities included preparing and eating picnic lunches with her family and friends, knitting and crocheting, holidays, researching vacation spots, eating hot peppers, reading and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She maintained a great sense of humor and a sharp memory throughout her life. The family has fond memories of their fishing vacations in Minnesota and time spent on the porch swing and gatherings in the back yard of their home.

Florence is survived by her four children, Roland "Ron" Barr and wife, Annette of Mercedes, Texas; Dennis Barr and wife, Faye of Cresco; Merrilinn Onstine and husband, Richard of Maple Valley, Wash.; and Richard Barr and wife, Kathy of Charles City. She will also be sadly missed by her two sisters, Wilma Huffman and husband, Bill of Tucson, Ariz. and Bernice Larson Taglin of Charles City; her 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 15 great great grandchildren. Many other relatives and friends survive her.

Preceding Florence in death is her husband, Roland R. Barr; her parents; one grandson, David Barr; one sister, Ruth Huffman; and her four brothers, Wendell Meyer, Mark Meyer, John Meyer and Bernard Meyer.

Irene (Kruse) Carr was born May 5, 1935 in London, Minn. to Charles and Amy (Collins) Kruse. She graduated from Leroy High School and married H. Allen Carr on March 26, 1960 in Charles City.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Rhonda (Gail) Brogan of Spring Valley and Ann Marie Thomas of Lakeville, Minn.; 1 son; Robert Allen Carr of Birmingham, Ala.; 8 grandchildren: Philip Leibold, Danny Leibold, Jenny Lynn Leibold, Cameron Marie Carr, Ginger Edna Carr, Taylor Miller Thomas, Christopher Brogan, and Bradley Brogan; 5 great-grandchildren: Kelly Sue Leibold, Katlynn Rose Leibold, Eric Brogan, Monica Brogan, and Kelsey Brogan; 3 sisters: Jackie Root of Mazeppa, Helen Johnson of Rochester, and Gail Shelstad of Mazeppa; 1 brother: Glenn Kruse of Mable.

Daniel J. Dugan

MUSCATINE - Daniel J. Dugan, 65, of Muscatine, died Sunday, February 9, 2003 at his home. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Muscatine.

Visitation will be today, February 12, 2003 from 3 to 7 p.m. followed by a rosary service at Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home in Muscatine.

Daniel was born August 11, 1937, in Charles City, the son of Charles and Gertrude Meyer Dugan. He married Sandra Skillen on May 23, 1959 in Charles City.

Mr. Dugan worked for the nash Finch Co. for forty years, retiring in 2000.

He is survived by his wife: Sandy; five sons: Mike (Lisa) of Muscatine, Joe (Tracey) of Moscow, Iowa, Chris, Steve and Matt, all of Muscatine; seven grandchildren; two sisters: Betty (Cal) Larson of Charles City and Patricia (Don) Scheffert of Guttenburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James (Phyllis) Dugan of Waterloo.

Mary Damjanovic

Mary Damjanovic, 83, formerly of rural Charles City, died Wednesday Feb. 12, 2003, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2003 at the Grace Episcopal Church, 902 5th Ave., Charles City. Officiating will be the Rev. Kathryn S. Campbell. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Mary was born May 27, 1919 in Poland. Her and her husband moved to the North Iowa area in 1950. The couple met while working in a labor camp during WW II.

Mary was united in marriage to Milan Damjanovic in Germany. When the couple moved to the Charles City area they began farming. Mary worked very hard along side her husband on the farm and still maintained the home life. Mary and Milan learned to speak English by listening to the radio. Mary was fluent in 5 languages and worldly educated. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, raising livestock, and taking a stroll down to the Cedar River to drop in a fishing line.

Mary was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Charles City.

Those thankful for having shared in Mary's life include her sons, Steve Damjanovic of Charles City, Dan Damjanovic and his partner Suzy Neessen of Cedar Falls, Mike Damjanovic of Charles City, and Alan Damjanovic and his wife Karen of Orchard, seven grandchildren, Bronson, Alisha, Ben, Mariah, Luke, Jerad, and Paul.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Milan in 1989.

MARION - Faye L. Binger, 76, of 2501 Hwy 13, Marion, formerly of Charles City, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 in St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Services at 3 p.m. Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. Rev. Fran Griffeth will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday and at the chapel after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Survivors include a daughter Pat Allard and husband Robert of Marion; a son Keith Binger of Irving, Texas; a sister Dixie White of Borger, Texas; and two grandchildren: Chad Allard and wife Amanda of Blairstown, and Kelly Allard and fiance Kai Stark of Marion. Also survived by a dear friend Ken Sahl of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Faye was born January 3, 1927 in Waverly to Leo and Mary Thomas Gray. Faye was a homemaker and had her own cleaning service. She enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies, sewing, crafts, dancing, and knitting.

Faye was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Larry DeVries

Larry DeVries, 57, a resident of 402 4th Avenue, Charles City, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services for Larry DeVries will be held today, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation was at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday , Feb. 17, 2003 and from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday, Feb 18, 2003.

Larry Allen DeVries was born October 25, 1945, at Charles City, the son of Hommo "Onnie" and Minnie (Rand) DeVries. He grew up in the Elma area and attended Crestwood High School. On April 18, 1964, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Conway at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. Larry worked at BC Hydrotile in Nashua for twenty-five years, Featherlite Trailers, and David Manufacturing. He could be found spending time playing pool, working in his garage, gambling and watching NASCAR racing. However, his passion was stock car racing. During his 30 years of racing he built his own racecars, and was well known and respected in north Iowa for his talents and abilities. In 1987 he won the Season Championship at the I 35 Speedway in Mason City, in 1995 he was all time season points champion at the Fayette County Speedway, and also at the same time received the fans Most Popular Driver Award. Larry also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife: Cheryl of Charles City; four children: Rick DeVries of Floyd, David (Roni) DeVries of Clear Lake, Brian (Gina) DeVries of Charles City, and Minessa (Randy) Wiltse of Charles City; seven grandchildren: Kyle DeVries, Kayla Byers, Ashley Wiltse, Shane Wiltse, Tyler Wiltse, Tanner Putney, and Brianne DeVries; a brother: Darrell (Connie) DeVries of Charles City; and three sisters: Lorilee (Marv) Ackerson of Bassett, Wanda (Dennis) Meyer of Elma, and twin sister Lynda (Bob) Chambers of Elma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister: Darlys Jacobson, and nephew: David Lee DeVries.

William "Bill" Schwartz

William "Bill" Schwartz, 78, a resident of 1134 Shadow Avenue, Charles City, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at his residence.

Memorial services for Bill Schwartz will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Final disposition will be at a later date.

William Charles Schwartz was born April 23, 1924, at Fulton, IL, the son of Fredrick and Mildred (Gusse) Schwartz. He graduated from the Clinton High School. In 1954 Bill was married to Fern French. They were married for 24 years. In 1955 Bill purchased a farm north of Charles City. He retired from farming in 1986 and continued living there until his death. Bill's interests included fishing, and playing pool and cards. His grandchildren were very important to Bill and brought special joy to him.

Living family members include his daughter, Claudia (Rick) Montgomery of Plainfield; two granddaughters, Wendy (Doug) Ross, and Angela King; three great grandchildren; three brothers, Donald (Roberta) Schwartz and Wesley (Emma) Schwartz both of Clinton, and Fredrick Schwartz of Bryant; and five sisters, Dorothy Peters of Arkansas, Eunice (Ed) Violett of DeWitt, Helen Darr of Front Royal, Va., Edna Mae (Tom) Montague of DeWitt, and Alma (Sam) Funaro of Des Moines. His parents, a granddaughter, Michele Hoisington, a brother, Kenneth Schwartz, and a sister, Elnora Schwartz, preceded him in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society.

NEW YORK, NY - Vicky Brandt Garmen, 44, a resident of New York, N.Y. and formerly of Clinton, died Feb. 4, 2003 at New York Hospital Cornell after a long illness.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003 at Conway - Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma. Inurnment will be in the Howard Cemetery, also in Elma.

Vicky was born June 12, 1958 to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Brandt of Clinton. After graduating from Clinton High School, she followed her love of singing by earning her degrees in music from Simpson College, Indianola and the University of Arizona, Tucson.

On June 22, 1985 she was united in marriage to Charles Garmen of Elma. The couple then moved to New York City. Her musical experiences ranged from singing opera and concert performances in New York, Russia and Japan, to singing church music. She worked for the Broadway United Church of Christ and most recently for an agency of the United Methodist Church.

Vicky is survived by her husband: Charles of New York; her parents: Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Brandt of Clinton; one brother: Kenneth of Clinton; her maternal grandmother: Luella Skiles of Mt. Carroll, Ill.; her mother-in-law: Mrs. Lois Garmen of Elma; Charles' uncle Edward Diekmann of Elma and her sister-in-law and husband Mr. and Mrs. Steven Heitbrink of Charles City.

Allison M. King

MASON CITY - Allison M. King (Stone), 26, of 1313 3rd Avenue N. died Sunday Feb. 16, 2003, from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident South of Mason City. Funeral services for Allison will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia, with Rev. Jeff Dahlin officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., today, Wednesday, Feb 19, 2003 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be given to the Allison M. King Memorial Fund.

Allison was born Dec. 7, 1976 in Mason City the daughter of Bryan and Susan (Berry) Stone. She graduated from North Central Manly High School in 1995 and during her senior year was awarded the Arion Award in music. Allison married Robert King June 13, 1998 in Mason City. She was currently working as a receptionist for Mercy Family Care, Clear Lake. While in high school, Allison was a cheerleader and member of the Show Choir at North Central Manly. She enjoyed singing, dancing and collecting Mickey Mouse. She was a wonderful mother, beautiful wife and a caring sister and will be missed by all.

Allison is survived by her husband: Robert King of Clear Lake; 2 daughters: Alexis and Cadence at home; her parents: Susan Stone of Manly and Bryan Stone and wife Brenda of Charles City; father and mother-in-law: Aaron King and wife Sharon of Waterloo; grandparents: Walter and Betty Berry of Mason City; Gary and Bonnie Sutherland of Marshalltown and Mary King of Waterloo; step-grandparents: Edward and JoAnn DeGeus of Britt; 4 brothers: Aaron, Adam, Tyler and Brody; 2 sisters: Breanna and Carissa.

Kathryn Marie Holmseth was born March 6, 1915, at Blue Earth, Minn., the daughter of William and Annetta (Evans) Clark. She was educated in the rural schools and graduated from Blue Earth High School. On April 16, 1932, she was united in marriage to John E. Holmseth. In 1948 they moved to Floyd. After retirement they wintered thirteen years in Rio Hondo, Texas. John died on July 28, 1992. In 1993 Kathryn moved to Charles City. She was a member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church and was very active in various aspects of the church. Her love for books was her greatest pastime, as she was an avid reader. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing cards with her many friends. Time spent with her family was very important and she enjoyed traveling to their various homes sharing their lives together.

Living family members include four daughters: Carolyn Walkup of State Center, Joyce (Keith) Drahn of Monona, Kay (Ronald) Shelton of Janesville, Wis., and Ruthanne (Rodney) Ellis of Charles City; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; three sisters: Helen (Harold) Kliendl of Blue Earth Minn., Thelma Bromeland of Frost, Minn., and Jean Rose of Winona, Minn.; and a sister-in-law: Lorene Clark.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son: Durwood Holmseth; a grandson: Douglas Walkup; two brothers: DeVere and William Clark; two sons-in-law: Leland Walkup and Robert Marovets; and a brother-in-law: Donald Bromeland.

Hazel Schmidt

Hazel Schmidt, 81, a former resident of 708 7th Avenue, Charles City, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Hazel Schmidt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Hazel Arlene Schmidt was born Nov. 18, 1921, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Fred and Alma (Thurman) Schaer. She graduated from the Wapello High School, received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and her Master's Degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. Hazel served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. During her career, she taught schools in Scott County, Burlington, and then was at Lincoln School in Charles City from 1955 to 1985. Hazel was a member of the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Business and Professional Women, American Association University Women, Rachel Circle, Elks Club, and the American Legion.

Living family members include a son, Craig (Pam) Schmidt of Charles City; a daughter, Linda (Daryl) Ellison of Shakopee, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Corey and Cole Schmidt, and Lindsey and Andrew Ellison.

Her husband preceded her in death on May 16, 1991.

Gordon Rex Pennington

SANIBEL ISLAND, FLA. - Gordon Rex Pennington, a retired senior vice president at Sverdrup Corp., used his talent for building bridges to connect pieces of land, but more importantly to forge relationships between people.

"Fellow employees responded that Gordon was a terrific friend , a mentor, a wonderful human being and an adviser to us all. That was Gordon," said Jim Van Buren, retired vice president of Sverdrup Corp. "Gordon was absolutely fearless when it came to engineering challenges."

Mr. Pennington died of heart attack Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at his home on Sanibel Island, Fla. He was 73.

Born in Chickasaw County, Mr. Pennington grew up on the family farm near Bassett. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1945. At 16, he enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames, earning his bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1949.

Mr. Pennington was drafted into the Army in the Korean War and served three years surveying land in Alaska for Signal Corps.

Mr. Pennington married his college sweetheart, Jacqueline Anne Morrison in 1951.

In 1955, they moved to St. Louis,Mo. where he joined Sverdrup & Parcel as a civil engineer. In his 38 years at Sverdrup, Mr Pennington earned the nickname "Mr. Transportation", for his work on bridges around the world. He was most proud of the design and engineering work he did on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Before he retired in 1994, he served as a board member and senior vice president responsible for transportation work at Sverdrup Corp., now Jacobs Engineering Group.

Mr. Pennington, a registered professional engineer in 20 states, was a past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Consulting Engineers Council of Missouri and the St. Louis section of the Society of American Military Engineers. He had served as a board member of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association and the International Bridge Tunnel and Turnpike Association.

Mr. Pennington was a former Sunday school teacher, trustee and 48 year member of Webster Hills United Methodist Church.

A memorial visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb 15, 2003, at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood, Mo. A memorial service was held Sunday, Feb 16, 2003, at Webster Hills United Methodist Church, 698 West Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves,Mo. followed by a reception at the Christian Life Center. Private burial was Monday, Feb 17, 2003, in Jefferson Rarracks National Cemetery.

In addition to his wife, his survivors include three sons: Dr. Tim Pennington and Andy Pennington both of Kirkwood, Mo. and Mark Pennington of Graceville, Fla.; a daughter: Carla Duffey of Kirkwood, Mo.; a sister: Joyce Cavanaugh of Charles City; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Leone Dale

Leone Emma Dale, 85, the daughter of Neva (Brown) and Hubble Smith, was born April 7, 1918, in Charles City, Iowa, and died early Thursday morning, (February 20, 2003) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City, in Hospice Care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with Rev. Paul N. Wilcox officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Charles City. The family requests memorial expressions be made to Home Health Care of Charles City or Hospice of North Iowa.

Leone attended school in, and was a lifelong resident of, Charles City. She will be remembered for her love, dedication and devotion for her family. Leone had a great interest in all animals but was especially fond of dogs. She was also a linotype operator at one time for the Charles City Press and a housekeeper for the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Those grateful for having the privilege of sharing in Leone's life are her sister, Wanda Gillam of Charles City; her nephew, David Wilkinson and wife, Elaine, of Des Moines, Iowa; and other relatives and friends who survive her.

Leone was preceded in death by her parents.

Frances A. 'Irish' Schweizer

Rudd - Frances A. 'Irish' Schweizer, 76, of Rudd, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Her funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rockford, with Reverend Craig E. Steimel officiating. A graveside service will be held the same day at 1:30 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery, Charles City. Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. on Monday at the church, where a short scripture service will also be held at 6:30 p.m.

Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, is in charge of the service. Memorials may be directed to the Frances A. Schweizer Memorial Fund.

Frances was born Oct. 5, 1926 on a farm south of Nora Springs, a daughter of William and Marguerite (McCarthy) O' Rourke. She attended school in both Rockford and Nora Springs, graduating from Nora Springs High School. Irish then graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City and began work at J.P. Deckers and later at the ASCS office, both in Mason City. She was united in marriage to Paul J. Schweizer on Oct. 6, 1947. They farmed near Rudd for many years while Irish also worked at the Rudd Meat Locker and at a local restaurant. She was a Music Mother, Cub Scout Leader, Lioness, and a member of the AMVETS Auxiliary and the Rudd Senior Citizens Center. Irish was also active in her Catholic faith as a circle rosary society member.

She enjoyed cards, bingo, crafts, puzzles, camping, fishing, decorating with Christmas lights, and watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball. Irish was active in numerous community events but most enjoyed attending the many activities of her children, grandchildren, and neighbor children throughout the years.

Frances is survived by three sons and their spouses, Mike and Mary Ann Schweizer of Mason City, Randy and Sandy Schweizer of Marble Rock and Stan and Nancy Schweizer of Rudd, one daughter and her husband, Jackie and Craig Schmitt of Floyd, two brothers, Clem O' Rourke of Mason City and Larry O'Rourke of Rockford, IL, one sister, Joan Showalter of Grand Forks, ND, ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul, a son, Kenny, a granddaughter, Kristen, an infant brother, Billy, and two sisters, Helen White and Marilyn Bork.

Harriette Leona Nicholson

Charles City - Harriette L. Nicholson, 82, of 910 13th Street Cedar Crest Apartments in Charles City, died early Friday, Feb. 21, 2003 at Floyd Co. Memorial Hospital in Hospice Care, Charles City.

Funeral services for Harriette will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church 101 L St., Charles City, with Rev. Doug DeFord officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. The family will greet relatives and friends from 6-8 p.m. todaty, Monday, Feb. 24, at Fullerton Hage Funeral 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, and will continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

Harriette wasborn October 5, 1920, in St. Ansgar, the daughter of Agnes (Jackson) and Harry Thomas.

A native of Charles City, Harriette attended school within the Ionia School System, graduating from high school in 1939. Harriette was united in marriage to Roy D. Nicholson on July 15, 1939 in Austin, Minn.

The couple had farmed in Charles City and the surrounding areas. She was employed as a clerk at the Trowbridge Grocery Store and later Red Owl Grocery in Charles City, retiring in 1985. She had also worked for the Exise dress Shop in Charles City. Harriette took great pride in being a grandmother, great grandmother and was a foster grandparent for 19 years. Her favorite past time includes sewing and Harriette's family recalls she was never afraid of hard work. She enjoyed people and visiting with them. Harriette liked to dine out. Harriettte was a devoted Christian and faithful to her church. Harriette was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Charles City.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing Harriette's life are her two children, Daniel Nicholson and wife, Bonnie of Charles City; Kathleen Clammer-Nicholson of Springtown, TX; her sister, Jean Fisher of Charles City; she will also be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her two grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends survive her.

Preceding Harriette in death is her husband, Roy D. Nicholson; a son, David Nicholson; her parents; an infant sister, Margaret and a great grandson, Todd Stephen Clark, Jr.

NASHUA--Donald H. "Buzz" Hunt, 78, of Nashua died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at his rural Nashua home.

Elaine Schmitt

Elaine Schmitt, 76, a resident of 501 9th Avenue, Charles City, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elaine Schmitt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. The Pastor Gayle Wilcox, will officiate. Burial will be in West Saint Charles Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Elaine Emily Fluhrer Schmitt was born October 31, 1926, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Earl and Eva (Werk) Fluhrer. When she was five years old the family moved to Charles City where she graduated from the Charles City High School in 1944. Elaine then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her Teaching Certificate. Later she would attend Wartburg College where she received her degree in Elementary Education. On Dec. 27, 1949, she was united in marriage to Roger Schmitt at the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church. During her career Elaine taught at Maynard, Charles City, and for twenty-one years at Greene. After retirement they lived in Arizona and Arkansas. The retirement years would find her working with Home Health, which she thoroughly enjoyed. During her life she was a member of West Saint Charles United Methodist, holding various positions in the church, and later would become a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Iowa State Teachers Association, and the Greene Teachers Association. Attending Bible studies, sewing, and knitting were some of Elaine's favorite pastimes.

Living family members include her husband, Roger Schmitt of Charles City; a son, Douglas Schmitt of Independence, Kan.; and a favorite cousin, Nile K. Smith of Neola.

She was preceded in death by her parents.


Clyde M. Bollman

Clyde Marlow Bollman, age 91, of Charles City, died Feb. 23, 2003, after a brief illness. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Strawberry Point. Father Jack Paisley will officiate the service. Burial will be in Strawberry Point. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Roberson Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, with a scripture service at 5 p.m.

Clyde Marlow Bollman was born on March 30, 1911, the son of Ira S. Bollman and Edna Perkins in Luana, Iowa. He graduated from Luana High School. On June 26, 1935, Clyde married Lucille E. Burckart in Postville. He lived the greater part of his life in rural Strawberry Point and retired from farming. Clyde enjoyed his family, reading, gardening, bird-watching, and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille, of Charles City; two daughters, Sharon (Jim) Kamoss of Charles City, and Sandra (Roger) Burr of Strawberry Point; two brothers, Everett (Dora) Bollman of Luana, and Leo Bollman of Monona; two granddaughters, Kelly (Scott) Sweet of Charles City, and Stacey (Derek) Wetterstrom of Medina, Minn.; one grandson, Dru (Jill) Burr of Waterloo; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son; two brothers, Don and Avery; and two sisters, Leatrice Sharp and Helen Price.

Roberson Funeral Home in Strawberry Point is in charge of arrangements.
